Hi Thomas, Thanks, got it now. Very much appreciated. BFN - Original Message - Hi Jim, Setting Goldwave 5 to record in unbounded mode is very easy to set. In Goldwave 5 if you press f11 to bring up the Control Properties, and then control+tab to the Recording page you'll find what you are looking for. At the very end of the Recording Control Properties is a radio button called Record Mode. If you down arrow a couple of times you'll come to Unbounded. Tab to ok and its set. Cheers! Hi Thomas, Thanks. Gold Wave does now seem to work as you said. It may be because I used the tab key to move to and highlight the last folder. I know that I do not have the latest version of Gold Wave. I do have three different fairly old versions. On this Computer it is 5.22, and on my game development computer it is 4.26 and 5.25. I do not really know why I have not up dated for so long other than that they work now. But the 4.26 is because I have not been able to find and check the record unbounded on the newer versions. Hi Thomas, Hmm, none of the ways that you mentioned work here. Gold Wave does not remember the last directory. And the context key will not bring up Gold Wave as a program to open a file with. it will do that if a removable drive is used and removed or turned off when app opens. At 03:25 PM 10/23/2012, you wrote: Hi Jim, That's strange. What version of Goldwave are you running. As for the issue with the Context Menu key it sounds to me like Goldwave isn't associated with sound files in your system registry. That's an easy thing to fix. You can either press the Context Menu key on a sound file and go to properties to change the default media player or editor, or you can go to folder options under the tools menu, and add an file assocation for Goldwave to your known file types. Once you do that Goldwave will appear in your Context Menu as an option. Cheers! On 10/23/12, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote: Hi Thomas, Hmm, none of the ways that you mentioned work here. yep, when you open it that is what comes up in goldwave. you have to tab to the folder list and get your file. That is normal for goldwave. The second part is also right goldwave is not a Microsoft program. I have a flash drive well a couple drives I use when cleaning units. 4-8gb is all you need for needed software. Ofcause if you need a backup, I make a folder on my external drive seperate from everything else. I back up the system. Ofcause if this has viruses and such on it those go to that folder to. Then I scan the folder. on my system. Then I transfer it back. Then I kill the files. I do encourage the backing up of important files by users before they give me the system because I will have access to everything while its on the backup drive. Hi Thomas. Well, I store most of my important documents, files and other media content on an external hard drive for security and because its more portable. I only ever access the drive when I need something and then I usually copy a temporary version to my main hard drive which I will then replace on my external once i have done with it. This way I can prevent disclosure of any of my personal files should I unfortunately become the victim of a security breech such as a virus, malware infection etc.. The really sad part is very few Windows users realize that the programs they use like registry cleaners, antivirus programs, spyware software, disk clean up utilities, etc all are because of the short comings of the OS itself and its like putting a bandaid on a cut that really needs stitches. HiDark, Well, these days there are a number of storage devices that don't require any extra power cables etc. There are the passport drives by Western Digital that have a slim laptop drive in a small plastic case that runs off your laptop battery rather than an external power source. I believe they now have a passport drive that can hold about 2 TB of data. So they are handy little drives that can hold a lot of data, and are very portible. Then, there are the thumb drives, flash drives, etc that can hold 8, 16, 32, or 64 GB of data. They don't hold a lot of data compared to a passport drive but are small enough to slide into a pants or coat pocket and plug it into your laptop etc when you want to access something. The nice thing is they don't have any motors etc inside them so they don't require a lot of power and are pretty much the floppy discks of the future. The other alternative is flash cards. Many new computers such as my Toshiba laptop comes with a Flash card reader. You can buy flash cards anywhere from 8 GB to 32 GB in size and they are very small. You can insert them and pop them out as easily as a floppy disc, and have up to 32 GB of storage space at a pop. In fact, I use flash cards like floppies and have a portible USB flash card reader to use on my older computers that don't have one built in. Bottom line, you don't have to have a huge 2 TB drive with a bunch of external power cables etc to back up your data. There are several different alternatives on the market, and I personally use more than one as there are pros and cons with each. Under c:\Users\Thomas is Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, and so on. Therefore if I click on the Thomas icon in the Start Menu all of my documents, music, and videos are organized logically anyway. I see no need to put my music in c:\Music when I can bring up the Start Menu, cclic on the Music icon, and go directly to c:\Users\Thomas\Music instantly or click on Thomas and then on Music. As far as the issue of choice you can still choose to put your files anywhere you want them if you disable security features like User Account Control, but it isn't the safest thing to do. The entire point of Microsoft restricting your c: drive from general use is to protect it from unauthorized users and from malware. What you see as an issue of choice Microsoft sees as an issue of security. Sometimes choice and ssecurity aren't compatible, and this is a case in point. I might add that putting all of your faith in antivirus software etc is a bad idea. That isn't the only kind of security threat you have to worry about. Several years ago, back in the Win 98 days, I remember hearing about a rash of attacks where people were prowling chat sites, and once they found someone, they would get the other persons IP, login to their PC, and steel their personal data or destroy their data for kicks. The internet is a nasty place and if you think you put software x, y, z on there and are safe think again. There are all kinds of ways for people to hack into your internet connection and whipe your drive before you even know what hit you. Now you can't put that all on the OS. When programs are done right and not halfassed. You will find them not leaving trash behind. But, why add the extra code when people gripe over the size of the download. That is how you get instability on the op and the more you run the more unstable you get down the road. Hi Tom. it always just seemed silly to me having a folder called my Documents with a bunch of other folders that have dam all to do with documents. plus again, i like to distinguish things like text games and audio books by having them in their own folders. While I see the logic in having folders for each user, when your the only user on a system it doesn't make sense, besides as I've said before %90 of the problems I've ever! had in windows have been to do with user accounts going wrong at startup, getting corrupted or otherwise causing trouble. Frankly that's why I like sticking stuff where I want to put it, meaning I exactly know where it is, what folders I've created etc. Again, this is another reason why I like xp, it gives me! the max amount of choice on organizing my system, it's ui display and everything else, but choice seems not to be microsoft's current thinking anymore, nor indeed apples with what I've heard of the Iphone's proprietory file system. as for security, well that's what I pay Avg for. Re: [Audyssey] Slightly off topic: smugglers 5.
Hi Jim, Well, if I'm editing sounds and music I usually put the sounds in c:\Users\Thomas\Edit which is in my local home directory. As I said before all I have to do is open theStart Menu, arrow to Edit, and there is all of my sound files. To open One in Goldwave all I have to do is find the file I want, press the Context Menu key, and arrow to open with Goldwave. So its not like the files are a billion layers deep, and since I open the files directly from Explorer I don't have to open Goldwave, press control+o, and type the full path into the open dialog. Besides even if I did use the open dialog Goldwave remembers which directory was open last so it defaults to c:\Users\Thomas\Edit anyway. So all I need do is type the file name and Goldwave will open it from the default location. Of course, I could edit the files from the flash drive directly. As I mentioned in a prior message I use flash drives for a lot of day to day work, so for me I could do e:\Edit\File.wav and open the file from the flash drive rather than storing it on my c: drive which is as easy as what you do now. Cheers! On 10/22/12, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote: Hi Thomas, I'm just curious, where do you keep all of the sound files that you are working on for a game. I guess that I just don't like to type so much more than I need to. Same here, I have 2 drives. a large one which stores program backups and data as well as system bits, updated every so often though it may not be the most up to date. A 500gb drive which is basically a working drive for the xp laptop. my 120gb drive on the laptop has essentual data and programs only. I also have a 128mb flash and a 1 gb flash that I use for real important stuff like settings and a few important files I use every day. it also holds my favorites and such to. I have a dropbox cloud but since I read stories about how easy clouds can get hacked and trashed at times I am holding short of backing up any data to the cloud systems. Hi Ibrahim, Well, you will get no argument from me that a lot of the problems with Windows comes down to end users being ignorent of what tools are available for maintaining their system and I blame the manufacturers for not including a default schedule for handling various maintenance tasks. However, I will stick to my point the more stuff you put on the drive the slower it will get. To give you an example there was a Win 7 computer here that I did basic maintenance on which improved system performance but it still booted slow and took forever to load applications. It turned out my wife had 250 GB of pictures and videos on the drive. We got an external drive, moved everything to the external, and deleted everything from the c: drive. The moment we deleted all 250 GB of pictures and home videos Windows 7 ran twice as fast. So I have proof that putting too much stuff on c: is a performance killer as I've seen it firsthand. hi tom, i totally agree with you. i really don't see any point in massive c drives i really don't. i've got 5 external hard drives connected to my pc. so as you can imagine booting up actually does take a while but it's not because of the amount stored on my c drive lol. i'm not someone that goes around fixing pc's etc, but i would still consider it common sense to not put stuff on the c drive if only because if ever you have to format the system, at least you won't lose all your material as well. yes you can move stuff off usually before formatting but there are instances where something may stop you from doing so. drive corruption for 1 and lets be honest the more you access a drive the more chance there is of it being corrupted. so it stands to reason that c drive stands a pretty good chance of going first. To be honest, I'd rather not use an external drive perminantly just because of the need for more powerpoints, cables etc. while I'm very fond of my external 2 Tb drive, I only want it out when i'm actually backing stuff up. I got a new internal E drive attached to my desktop last year, which I use for audio books and music. i suppose I could also transfer all my text documents onto there instead of using the my documents folder for them, however while 4 mb is a lot of text, it's equally not much in terms of actual space, but why microsoft expects pictures, music and other stuff to go in there I don't know. which is why i created several folders directly on the C (and now moved onto the E), drive, such as c:\music and C:\audio even C:\text games for all my zcode etc files. this is again why i don't like the idea of windows 7, sinse I prefer having full access to all folders on the drive and knowing where I! put things. music goes in C:\music, not in some random subdirectory, especially sinse I've occasionally had to diversify in folders, for instance I've recently separated all the material related to my actual singing such as accompanyments, recordings of my singing lessons etc, into one folder separate from my music folder so that when I stick my entire music folder on playaback in winamp and hit shuffle (as I sometimes do when washing up), I'm not treated to just! the piano accompanyment to handel's messiah or having my very scary singing teacher yelling at me about the position of my eyebrows! :D. Well Darren, I've heard of those, but there weren't any available when i decided I needed another drive besides the C drive, plus I do like the convenience of having everything internally and using an external drive to backup. Fortunately I do also use avg pc tuneup to do all the tasks like fixing registry errors, replacing shortcuts, deleting various temporary files and defragging the disk, so both of my drives are fairly clean. indeed, pc tuneup actually sped up my pc's performance by no end! I aggree with you tom. I know a person, a local admin that doesn't use antivirus, spyware firewalls or even updates anything because it would be damaged by the updates or software. His view is that its all coman sence, and you just turn everything off when not using it. Though in a perfect world I'd aggree with him I couldn't be bothered doing that. Though seriously he is probably correct. At 07:40 p.m. 21/10/2012 -0400, you wrote: Hi Dark, Well, in terms of Windows 7 verses XP the local directory structure has been redesigned and makes more sence. Rather than music, videos, pictures, all going into your My Documents folder all of them are separate in your Home directory. For example, on Windows 7 my home directory is c:\Users\Thomas. The more layers of security you can put in place the less likely you will be a victom of cybercrime. That's the reason for UAC and the other things Microsoft is doing. I aggree tom, its why all pcs I have have a split drive. the c drive is small about 120gb its for the os and programs the other drives are bigger and have everything else. There are a number of things you can do, including regularly defragmenting and cleaning out the hard drive and registry, optimising the list of services and start-up programs that load with Windows, cleaning out browser cache files and cookies; These are all relatively straight forward and can be performed with little or no effort. I recommend programs that can do most if not all of this for the customers as part of their consultation as well as train said customers in the use of these tools where appropriate. Hi Tom. Fair enough, at least not having them in a folder who's name refers to documents helps, though given that uac seems to cause problems for installing older software I'll have to turn it off anyway so that's not really as much an issue for me. Of course, the ultimate in security is frequent backups, which is why i do that on a very regular basis, and really there's no better way to keep stuff safe. when my first machine broke in 2008, I'd have been in a right mess without all my backups, indeed I've got stuff on there which I've head for years, such as the 2nd edition dd rules in ms word format, as well as lots! of games and audio. Hi Tom. I have never heard of passport drives which is why I backup on a powered 2 tb external. I do however frequently use thumb drives to transfer small amounts of stuff from my desktop to my laptop and visa versa when I've been using one or the other, or when I want to give something to a friend, however sinse a full backup of my machine would be about 600 gb worth they aren't big enough for a perminant solution, usefull though they still are. beware the grue! hi, tom is right. i have several external drives actually. i never store anything on my c drive. that's purely for the operating system and any installed programmes. nothing more. everything else is shared between multiple drives. I do something similar darren, but that was a space concern rather than backing up. programs, documents, favourites etc all stay on my c drive which has about 500 gb of memory, but for space reasons last year I installed another drive with 1tb onto which i've transfered all my audio books and music. This is however more about saving space and not to do with backing up, which I do with a separate external 2 tb drive. Beware the grue! Hi lindsy. the installer for s5 has no license as far as I know, so as long as you keep the setup file safe you should be fine. Use a cd, use an internet storage service like sendspace, heck, just use a memory stick if you have to. I would however highly recommend getting ane external drive to backup onto, I use mine a lot and when my first desktop broke back in 2008 it was invaluable plus it's occasionally handy when i want to transfer a larger amount of stuff onto my laptop than would fit on my 8 gb memory stick. I do a backup now of all my games, documents, favourites, audio books and music every three weeks or so, which is why i am sure I have everything! For the s5 setup though, it's a relatively small file so whatever you have should be fine, indeed I've stuck it on my memory stick myself sinse I'm going to install it onto my laptop. One thing however, you might actually have already got extended download. This is an option sold with the game where by you just need to enter your mail address to get your download file again. Check just in case. i didn't pay for it myself, sinse I backup, but it is there for those who need it.
