Re: [Audyssey] jedi quake vs. overkill
Haha. Too true. I preferred overkill as well... for the same reasons. That, and it simulates a lot of the shooters I wish we could play. The likes of haylo, counterstrike, Call of Duty... etc. And I'm hoping that games of that calibur get developed in the near or distant future. - Original Message - From: peter Mahach piterm...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, August 20, 2010 11:03 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] jedi quake vs. overkill I prefer overkill personally. jq is fun, but it's a little too frantic. then again,, star wars was pretty frantic as well, blaster bolts everywhere... etc. lol- Original Message - From: clement chou chou.clem...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, August 21, 2010 5:11 AM Subject: [Audyssey] jedi quake vs. overkill Just curious... how many people actually still play on the overkill server? well if audioquake is loaded you need to just run the .qmod file. then you can choose it from the mods menu. I have edited the autoexec and mod .cfg files in the mod folder once installed to customise my preffs. At 01:57 p.m. 12/12/2008, you wrote: I've got the mod now, what do I do with it? Given my eamon exploration, one thing I'm getting to quite like in it's rpg phase is the symplified commands. Menues are handled by inputting numbers of choices into the command line, while directions work via standard if abbreviations. One thing that is quite nice though in Eamon delux is that you don't have to type in full names at all, just enough letters to get the program to recognize your command and the object. So for instance, if in a battle your squire is getting beaten up, instead of typing in Heal squire, you can just type he sq. The same goes for using spells, b tr, is sufficient to blast a troll. Of course, Eamon has a fairly symplistic interface with not many commands which help, though if menue commands could be used more extensively, things which couldn't be done with the generic commands like complex conversational choices, or commands to a group of soldiers for example could be done with menue choices. Just a thought, given the recent discussion of interfaces. Beware the Grue! Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake: some progress, but...
Hey Zack, glad you're making progress! As for the bots standing still, alas, sorry, no, there is not currently a way to make them do that. They just don't want to behave! Those blasted things! lol! You can, however, look in the mod.cfg file in your JediQuake41 folder and read it's comments... You'll find settings that you can change to make them play a little nicer with ya if you want. smile You can, for instance, make there aim worse or better, cause them not to use so many Star Wars weapons or force powers... As for the sounds, try the manual at the moment; I'm not sure if the sound test feature is available at the moment, and if it isn't, you can go into your audio Quake folder, into your id1 folder, into your sounds folder, and then simply audition them that way. Their names are self explanatory for the most part... For the JQ sounds, go into your JediQuake41 folder, into the sounds folder, and then you will find other subfolders which contain similar self-explanatory named wave files which you can then audition... HTH and have an awesome day!!!... Smiles, Cara :) At 07:27 PM 7/23/2007 -0700, you wrote: Hiya, Honestly, I've made quite a bit of progress with Jedi Quake. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake help
Zack, glad you're digging on it!!! smile an impulse is really just a fancy word for a generic internal game command, and is essentially what happens when you press most of your keys to control your player in the game... In other words, Quake itself was not only designed to have special commands that you can type into the console during the game which are regular words. It's also designed to be expandable so several of the commands, rather than having words associated with them, have impulses. This is mainly used with the game code itself internally, but now that modding this game has become so popular, you can find impulses used all over the place. I.E. If a mod has a command to make a player fly, which wasn't already built into Quake itself when it was written, the author of the mod might make that possible by defining an impulse command and letting the player know it's number and what it does... So in the case of flying for example, if I were to add another impulse command to the Jedi Quake mod to allow the player to fly, I might define it as let's say, impulse 49... So now, in the docs, I'd let you, the player know that impulse 49 allows you to fly... So when you're playing the game, you'd open the console, type in impulse 49, and then press enter. You'd then be flying in the game... Or you could bind this impulse to a key on your keyboard to eliminate all the extra steps with the console so you could activate it much faster in a game situation as you do with the rest of the defined keys on your keyboard Either way, impulse 49 would be sent to the game and it would act accordingly Does this make sense?... They are generic definable commands that a developer can link to game code for players to use... I could just as easily make that impulse number be 48 rather than 49 and it would work exactly the same way. You'd open the console, and type in impulse 48, press enter, and you'd be flying away... So in that case, 49 would be undefined and the game would simply not do anything if you were to type that in, because I the developer, didn't link it to any code... Does that make sense?... HTH, and please let me know if I missed anything and I'd be happy to send along another note... Have a great evening and enjoy the game!... Smiles, Cara :) Hiya, I've managed to download the Jedi Quake mod along with the Audio Quake engine itself. I've read through the key list and documentation, and believe I have a grasp of most of the essentials. However, I am a little confused: what is an 'impulse', exactly? How do I use them, if they're not part of the standard keyboard commands? I'm brand spanking new to both Audio Quake and Jedi Quake, really. Trying to figure it out. The game sounds great, but I just have trouble with navigation and watnot. Some of the sounds are a bit strange. Any advice here? Is there a learn sounds function? Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!!
Hi cara I only downloaded the quake engine which is 70 mb in size. I haven't downloaded the mods yet. I unzipped all the files in the quake zip file to a folder under program files which I have created. I noticed that the quake zip file is only a zip file with folders and files in it, there is no installer. So I unzipped all the files and then I pressed enter on zquake.exe as I wasn't sure which file to press enter on to start the game. and jaws was freezing up and I heard my floppy drive making a strange sound all the time but no game came up. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Cara Quinn Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 3:40 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!! Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!!
Nicol, it sounds like you downloaded the standard Quake install which has the graphics and such enabled. This will actually work, as it is technically a flavor of AQ, so try this; Go to your run dialogue, and enter the following, making sure to make the path correct... C:\Program Files\AudioQuake\perl.exe start.pl This should run the game, however, this really can all be avoided, if you simply go to the AQ folder as I've been mentioning, and download the actual Audio Quake installations which are actual exe files... Just out of curiosity, it sounds to me that you downloaded that file from the root folder, and not the AQ folder, is that correct?... What is the actual name of the zip folder you've got?... The Audio Quake installs, as I've said several times now on list, ARE IN THE AQ FOLDER. These are actual .exe installs so that's probably going to be what you're looking for. Smiles, Cara At 08:32 PM 7/23/2007 +0200, you wrote: Hi cara I only downloaded the quake engine which is 70 mb in size. It also manages players and other entities as they move throughout the world... The game as a whole, contains the Quake engine as one of its parts as well as other code to make the game appear and sound like it does etc. I say this just as an FYI as this can help you out if you find you'd like to know more about how to play the game or how it works, and decide to search it out on the web... Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!!
Mich, quake is the FPS (First Person Shooter) which came right after Doom, from the same software company, ID Software. As you know, Doom was one of the inspirations for Shades of Doom, and Quake took Doom a step further, being the first FPS to have actual 3D models in space rather than 2D ones which were made to look 3D, as well as popularizing the LAN party and online multiplayer genre. So basically, it's easily as quote real unquote a game as Shades of Doom is It is however, not a game which was originally designed for visually impaired people, if that might have been more what you may have been wondering about... This is where the Audio Quake mod comes in, along with the AGRIP project. http://www.agrip.org.uk One of the goals of the AGRIP project is to demonstrate how main stream games can have feature sets built into them which both enhance the game for sighted players as well as make it accessible on the same terms, for visually impaired players... Thus, as a proof of concept, the Audio Quake mod was created, as the culmination of other mods which make Quake, a completely main stream game, accessible to visually impaired players... Since Quake is now open source, there is still an active and quite vital modding and development community for it, almost eleven years after it's creation, so there is still a whole lot of material on the web on how to code for the game and game engine, as well as many other mods and engines based off of the original Quake engine... Anyway, it's at this stage, where Jedi Quake happens. I got involved with the AGRIP community in late 05 really for the idea of the virtual 3D environment rather than the gaming aspects, and felt that there should be some elements of the 3D world which weren't included in Audio Quake, so I began seeing what I could find on coding for the game... The result now, is release 4.1 of JQ... So I hope this clears this up for you, and that I haven't talked yer ear off! lol! smile Have a wonderful evening and happy gaming!!!... You can download the installation for the game itself, as well as the latest JQ release / update at: http://tbrn.net/modgirl The game installations are in the AQ folder, and the JQ releases are in the root... For those familiar with the mod, this update contains several bug fixes as well as many new features, so I've posted it as a self-contained release. It's a standard QMOD file for Quake and can also be converted into a zip file if you'd rather install or work with it that way... If you find you have any trouble downloading it, (as Windows sometimes wants to treat it as a zip file) you can set your browser to download all File Types in the save as dialogue, and it should save properly, as a QMOD file. Then, as long as you already have Audio Quake installed, you can simply press enter on the JediQuake QMOD file and it will automatically install into your installation of Audio Quake... As always, please feel free to contact me on or off list with any questions, concerns, or feedback. Enjoy! and have a most wonderful weekend!!!... Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!!
EVERYTHING you'll need to run this mod or play Audio Quake is completely free and available at: http://tbrn.net/modgirl The game itself with the bundled Audio Quake mod has two installs, depending on what you'd like, which are both located in the AQ folder, and the mod itself is located in the root folder... Having some familiarity with Quake itself (as Tom alluded to) can be a help and reading the manual / other docs is a very good thing. Once you are familiar with the game itself, the mod adds a whole lot of new features with extremely fast game play, as compared to the original game. Both are a blast though! -just different flavors!!!... Enjoy and HTH... Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake 4 update 1 now available!!!
George, where did you get the install of Audio Quake from? and did you check the box during the installation which says install the share ware Quake demo? The demo allows you to play regular Quake's complete first episode, which is about 5 or 6 maps I believe, however, you can play Jedi Quake and multi player matches with it which are completely unrestricted... They will not be the single player game and will be played either with bots or other humans... From your note, it sounds like you may not have checked the box during install, but get back with me when you can and let me know, K?... Best of luck and HTH!!!... yes, all the menu choices are spoken to me. And the game shouldn't allow you to start this way, and it the should tell you that... I don't know why it isn't... 1 press m from the main menu This will get you into the mods list 2 select Jedi Quake 3 As was announced in the mods menu, p will play the particular mod, so press the letter p and you'll play the selected mod, which is, in this case, Jedi Quake You'll now be in the game and you can bring up the console. Here you can type in the various commands to play the different games in Quake. So in this case, you'll either type tut to start the tutorials or dm to start a deathmatch game... Remember, that once the actual game starts, to close the console otherwise the keys you press will go to it and not to the game itself. When you want to stop playing, simply bring up the console and type quit and enter that. You'll then be back at the main menu again and you can press x to fully exit Audio quake. The menu choices should be spoken to you so if they aren't, please let me know, K?... Thanks so much... By the way I completely removed then re-instaled the game. So I set it up to play the jedi-quake mod. As I said, the latest version of JQ WILL NOT RUN IN SINGLE PLAYER MODE... So if you have that version installed, that means that you CAN NOT PLAY A SINGLE PLAYER GAME without the game crashing. smile You can try it if you like, just for laughs, but unfortunately, no go!!!... You can, however, start a single player game of standard Audio Quake if you type sp and enter it into the console, that is of course, providing that you are not set to run the mod when you do so... Does this make sense?... Have a great evening!... yes it does. and then, once you have it set to run the mod, how do you play jedi-quake? since you can't play in single-plyer mode, what mode can you play it in and what commands do you type to get it going? You can, however, start a single player game of standard Audio Quake if you type sp and enter it into the console, that is of course, providing that you are not set to run the mod when you do so... Well first off, the manual should address all of this, but providing you're doing the above, there's a prob with the way you're starting the game. I don't know the exact number of the maps, but i know that you have more than one episode, i believe 3 or 4, each episode has about 7 maps. Regarding the impulses, there are two rtf documents in jq's folder which tells you in great detail the impulses, and what they do. Re: [Audyssey] jedi quake
Yes, it'll play the same demo, but actually you can use other weapons other than the first nine. You won't notice changes in the actual quake (e.g. other footsteps sound), because jq is not a full quake modification, it is like an extension, it allows you to use different weapons, like light saber, stun gun, saber dart, and others. When you're in quake, press your console key to activate your console, then you can try the new mod, by typing 'dm', that'll start a deathmatch (with bots and you), and here you can use the different weapons/additions, and you can see how they work. The latest version won't work with the single player mode, due to sound precaching problems. I believe jq 3.8 has a sp and dm version (single player/death match), which you can use with sp mode. You install it as you did before with jq 4, and then just choose jq 3.8 sp. Of course, the new modifications won't be available which you can find in jq4, because it is an earlier version. This version of JQ is only for use in deathmatch, I.E. against bots or other humans. However, version 3.8 has a DM and Single player (SP) version which are labeled so you can choose which you'd like... You can find both AQ and JQ at: http://tbrn.net/modgirl The Audio Quake installs are in the AQ folder and the JQ versions / docs / source are on the immediate page without needing to browse. There are two installs for AQ, one has extra XP voices (MS Mary and Mike) and the other does not... Oh, one quick but important note; if your AQ install conflicts with Jaws, if you use such, it will work with narrator, and the qmod install for JQ will work fine eitherway... Hi Josh, yes it's true, and you're talking to the girl who wrote it! smile the mod is called Jedi Quake and you can find it at: http://tbrn.net/modgirl You'll obviously need to have Audio Quake installed first, and then you can install the mod... Just a note; this mod is ONLY for deathmatch, and will not work in single player mode. You'll crash the game if you try to run it thusly. smile So if you like that sort of thing, then go ahead, by all means do the single player thing and watch all of the funky messages that come up on your screen! lol! Anyway, the current version is episode 4, and as I said, it is only a DM release. There is,however, an earlier release, 3.8, which will work in single player mode, but still will have probs on a couple of maps. single player is distinguished by sp at the end of the file name and dm stands for deathmatch. There are two versions of episode 3.8, so feel free to choose the one that's right for you... 3.8 sp will work in either single player or deathmatch, however, 3.8 dm will ONLY work in deathmatch, as with the later JQ releases... I personally would recommend episode 4 though, as it's quite a bit more feature rich than the others. It's up to you... smile If you would like any further assistance on installing the mod after you've got the game installed, then feel fre to write and I'll explain... -Or, there are others here on the list who have installed the mod so they also can help you out... You will not be able to easily rename filenames including their extensions by doing what you describe below unless you have the show extensions option enabled in Windows. By default the extensions are hidden. However, if they are showing then your method which is very well written will work. Regarding the keyboard keys though. Most standard 104-key keyboards will have going from left to right the following keys: left-control, left-windows, left-alt, space bar, right alt, right windows, applications, right-control. So, the applications key is not the same as the right windows key. Now, I do have a keyboard which has only one windows key on the left, and on the right in place of it, there is just the applications key which is probably what you meant for this type of keyboard. I just wanted to clear this up to avoid any confusion. Also, it is called the applications key or the context key regardless of whether you use Jaws, Hal, Window-Eyes, Narrator, or nothing at all. smile. Hope this helps. ___ Gamers mailing list .. So anyway, will let ya know when I get back to the developin' thang... smile As for my first impressions of C#, Oh my God! it's totally way easier than C / C++ and certainly a heck of a lot less squirrely than QC!... smile As for the QC chats, yes, I plan to have another one, but I'd really like it if people would post times that they'll be available as I take scheduling for them very seriously, and don't want to budget the time if people aren't serious about committing. So I'm not sure when that will be, but thank you so very much for the interest!!! I think the input and ideas from the community could really create some very interesting / fun mods / games. Hi Cara, I'd like to make a couple of technical corrections if I may. First, the Windows key and the applications key are two different keys. The Applications key is the applications key regardless of the screen reader Jaws, Window Eyes, Super Nova, Hal, whatever... As for renaming a file the easiest and most practical way to do this is arrow to the file to rename, and press f2, and you will be placed in an edit box to rename the file. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
I believe that method should work regardless of whether extensions are showing, but thanks for the note. smile As far as the right windows key, I certainly don't want to cause any confusion, but most people I know, call that key the right windows key, rather than the applications key, and the other, the left windows key, so effectively, some keyboards would have two left windows keys on them. smile Am certainly not saying that you're wrong, and it may be a matter of people simply using an incorrect name for a key, no biggie. The only place I've ever heard that key called an applications key is in context of a screen reader, so perhaps that's correct. Anyway, thanks for the note and have an awesome day!... Okay, as I've said already, in order to play the mod, you must press M at the main menu to get a list of mods. once you do that, you can then run Jedi Quake from there. When Quake starts, You will need to start the game manually. this is how Quake itself runs. Reading the Audio quake manual may be in order at this point... to enter the console, press your ` or ~ key. This will toggle the console on and off. You can use the console to input commands regarding the game or to chat with other players during it if you're online... If you'd like to get up and running more quickly, instead of running the mod, you can simply start quake and type tut into the console which will start you on some tutorial maps... Otherwise, you can either start quake with or without the mod and type dm in the console to get a starting deathmatch map with bots that you can play against. I warn you though, smile In JQ the bots are exponentially more difficult than in standard mode and play more quickly and more like experienced human players. So if you're not familiar with the game to start with, you might want to start off with the standard game to get a feel for it, and so it will be fun... It's up to you!... Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
Hi, this is not a problem, as its the way Quake itself starts. But yes, you can change it, and here's how... Go to your id1 folder, and find the file mod.cfg Open it with note pad, word pad, or your fav text editor, and find the line that looks like this: startdemos demo1 demo2 demo3 Now, simply add // before the line so it looks like this: // startdemos demo1 demo2 demo3 Save the file and run the game. The demo will now be gone... Smiles, Cara At 12:39 AM 12/17/2006 -0500, you wrote: ok. Here is another progblem I'm having. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
Hi, just go ahead and save it as a zip file, and then, after you've saved it, simply change it to a .qmod extension as you'd change any file name in windows You'll probably get a dialogue asking you to confirm and warning you that changing a file extension is not recommended but click yes anyway... Press enter on the file, and AS LONG AS AUDIO QUAKE IS ALREADY INSTALLED, you should have no problems Smiles, Cara At 09:24 AM 12/17/2006 +, you wrote: hi what is happening is it saves as a .zip file the only other choice is to save it as all files let me know what you think - Original Message - From: Cara Quinn [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, December 16, 2006 7:22 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro... Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
Which ever way you choose, I hope you have bunches o fun!... Smiles, Cara At 10:51 AM 12/17/2006 -0500, you wrote: HI. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
It's talking about the MindGrid audio which is enhanced audio for Quake, and I believe the proper pak file is pak1.pak which is located in your Audio Quake folder in the id1 folder. Not sure how you'd have two, but you can safely move that pak file if you need to and then move it back to see if the error goes away. If you have the full version of Quake, the pak should be pak 2, but if you have the share ware, it should be pak 1. Anyway, let me know more about the error and when it occurs. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
Hello, after you install AQ and then install the qmod file, you would then run AQ and at the first screen, you'll be presented with a menu of choices. One of these is to press m for a list of the currently installed mods. You can then follow the instructions to advance through the list and run the appropriate mod. Hope this helps!... Hi, well, first you'll need to install Audio Quake, and then, you'd simply download the latest version of JQ (which is v 4) and then all you need do, is simply press enter on the qmod file you download, and it will install automatically into your copy of Audio Quake. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask away! Have fun!!! Smiles, Cara At 01:11 AM 12/16/2006 -0500, you wrote: I have the jq but don't know how to make it work. Re: [Audyssey] Jedi Quake was Hello, and a quick intro...
Yes, for some reason, at times, IE wants to download that format as zip rather than preserving it's extension. It doesn't happen all the time for everybody though so go figure! lol! Anyway, one only need change the file name back to qmod and all shall be well! smile Smiles, Cara At 09:00 PM 12/16/2006 -0600, you wrote: Cara: Could it be that the mod is not installed at all?
