[Gimp-user] GIMP on Leopard

2007-11-19 Thread Victor Domingos
I recently upgraded to Mac OS X Leopard, which seems to be just great
and almost one month later there are no signs of a compatible GIMP
binary coming (I need a PPC version, because I use a PowerBook G4).

Just to make things worse, the GIMP port in MacPorts seems not to work
properly. I used to have both the old GIMP.app and the latest MacPorts
gimp-dev version running, and now I simply cannot use GIMP.

I am getting kind of desperate :(

I am teaching some students how to use GIMP and now I am not able to
try the exercises at home, before the classes. Does anyone have a good
news to me (is it coming, is it??).

By the way, is it that difficult to build a PPC version at the same
time we build an Intel one? Supposedly, Apple gave developers the
means to build both at once (Universal Binaries), right? What is
happening, then?

Anyway, I now the team is working hard on GIMP, and I thank you for
your great work.

Best regards,
Victor Domingos
(sadly, not GIMPing right now, in a sunny Portugal...)

Despite the name, Quick Mask doesn't have anything to do with layer
masks. Quick mask is a just quick way to convert the selection to a
channel and back.

I suggested Quick Mask to Victor because he mentioned he wanted to
see the layer mask and image at the same time because, IIRC, I
*did* use Quick Mask (at least two years ago!) to create a very
accurate masking effect because I wanted accuracy and could see the
image while masking at the same time. I have started using Gimp after
a long time and I recall now that Quick Mask has nothing to do with
the Layer Mask. It just didn't occur to me when I replied to Victor.

I have been watching a videotutorial about PhotoShop and that's when
this question has occurred to me. It could be usefull sometimes if we
could watch the layer mask in a window and the global effect in the

Re: [Gimp-user] Getting Screenshots directly into GIMP on different operationg systems

2007-07-17 Thread Victor Domingos
Hi, Akki!

In MacOS X, you may do the following:

1. Use the system-wide keyboard shortcuts for taking screenshots into
the Clipboard:

Control + Shift + Command + 3 a shot from the entire screen
Control + Shift + Command + 4 a shot from a selection of the
screen
Control + Shift + Command + 4 and then press SPACEBAR a shot
from only one window

By the way, if you use these commands without pressing the CONTROL
key, the images are stored in a file, not the clipboard.

2. In GIMP, use File Acquire From Clipboard

Have fun!

As a programmer and technical writer for software i love the ability
of getting screenshots directly from and into the GIMP via the
 Acquire submenu - Screen shot.

I've already tested that function successfully under (Ubuntu-)Linux
 and Windows (XP).

But under Mac OS there are some problems. I've installed the GIMP on
two different ways under Mac OS. The first way is via Mac Ports and
the Acquire-Screenshot-function can only get screen-shots of programs
running under the X11-server I'm running under Mac OS (like OOo.org).

The other way I've installed the GIMP via GIMP.app
 (http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/), the self contained application
bundle of GIMP, that uses X11, too. On that installation the point
Screen shot in the Acquire-submenu doesn't even exist.

Here's my question: is there any plugin that i can install to have
this cool function under Mac OS? Is anybody working on a plugin (and
is it even possible to get a Mac-Screenshot into an X11-application?).
It's a great functionality and it would be very useful for Mac-users.

They're used to move several layers at time - they keep same
 position. Usefull
tool, when you wish to move several layers and do not want their
 composition
to change. Otherwise you ougth to merge them what is not always
 what you want
 to do.
You change active layer by selecting one in Layers tab. You select
 it and all
actions you do apply to active layer only.

Is there any documentation about the new features? By the way... is

Ok, ok... :)

Well, what I was meaning about support is something different. The
latest GIMP binary (GIMP.app) available for Mac is version 2.2.11,
wich is... hmmm... about 9 months old. There is a significant lag, I
think. The available Windows binary is only 1 month old.

Isn't it possible to make GIMP binaries available for several
platforms, like those we can find in other opensource projects like
OpenOffice.org, Mozilla/Firefox, Inkscape or Blender?

Excuse me if this is a silly question, but it just that I really miss
that as a GIMP user, and maybe there are many other GIMP users like
me that would like to have the latest GIMP version shining in their
Macs. A friend of mine was not able to get GIMP working in a recent
MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo). Appearently the latest Gimp.app is getting
too old and should be updated.

However, please don't take my words as unthankfull critics. I am
using Gimp.app and I am very happy to be able to use it. The people
who made it available made a good job and I thank them for it.

 Hi,

we do support the Apple platform. The main reason to do the 2.2.15
release is that it contains a fix for a crash that occured only on the
 Apple platform.

We don't provide any binaries at all. Packaging GIMP for specific
platforms is left to third-party packagers. If these packages are not
uptodate for a particular platform, then the user community of said
platform does obviously not work. It's sad to see that the Mac OS X
community is even worse than the Windows one when it comes to
misunderstanding the free in Free Software.

Update it then. Aaron has made everything available that you need to
create an updated gimp.app package. All that is needed is a little bit
 of your time.

I understand... It's fair, I guess. I wish I had knowledge enough
about programming and compiling to do it by myself. But I will talk
with other portuguese Mac users...Maybe someone will volunteer him/
herself I hope so.

Thanks anyway!

Sadly, I guess this tool is not available for Mac users... :( Ihave
only found there a windows version. Do you know if it is possible to
compile it to run under MacOS X?

I tried web-o-tine, but i get an error (see attached image file,

missing in my system (I am running MacOS X Tiger).

I don't run Windows, I use a Mac (PPC, not Intel, by the way). Is
perlotine available for MacOS X, anywhere?

Hi VIctor -
This feature is (and has been) available either in gimp Perl
extensions as

perl-o-tine, or gimp python extensions, as filters-web-py-slice.

If you are not on windows, just install gimp-pyrhon to get it working.

if you can´t install any of these, there is image-transform-
guillotine,
but that will require you to manually save your image slices and
write the

needed HTML.

I have python intalled, I guess it came with MacOS X. Where can I get
py-slice? Or where can I get gimp python extensions compiled for
MacOS X?

[Gimp-user] Splitting images for web

2007-05-24 Thread Victor Domingos
Hi!

There used to be, in some GIMP versions, a filter, or a script-fu
that allowed us to split an image for a website, similar to what
Fireworks and ImageReady do. I cannot find it anymore, at least in
Mac and Windows versions. Am I missing anything, or it only runs on
Linux?

Thanks in advance!

[Gimp-user] Changing hair colour

2007-05-23 Thread Victor Domingos
Hello everyone!

I have a question about photo manipulation with the GIMP.

What is, in your oppinion, the best method to make dark hair look
like blond hair? I've seen some tutorials around the web (some of
them refering to Photoshop, not GIMP), but I was not able to get good
results with my own photos.

I will appreciate your answers. Thanks in advance! :)

[Gimp-user] GIMP on Mac

2007-05-23 Thread Victor Domingos
Hello!

I am currently using the GIMP on an Apple computer, more specifically
a Powerbook G4. I runs quite well, but I feel like it's a little
slow. One of these days, I tryed to run it with Ubuntu Linux, in the
same machine, and it seemed to run a lot faster. And I wonder now if
there could be another GIMP version or build for Mac that would be
more optimized for this platform. Does anyone know about any?

I know that there is a GIMP-related project named Seashore. It has a
clean interface, but it is meanless to me, as it lacks most of the
features I like to use...

One other question... Is there a completely universal Mac version?
Some weeks ago, I tryed to run the GIMP in a MacBook Pro (Intel C2D)
and there were no Filters, and the cursor had a funny aspect Does
anyone here use the GIMP under MacOS X in the new Intel Macs? Which
version? And does everything work ok?

Thanks!
