Re: [H] USB C Port

USB C is backward compatible. In fact, I use a USB 3 A to USB C cable for
charging and Data Transferring from the Phone as well with no issues.

I hope this helps you out,

Re: [H] closed loop water coolers

2020-04-27 Thread Beave
Hello all,

I hope all is doing well and staying healthy,

If you're going to cool a CPU only, I recommend not going Liquid Cooling
using an AIO Cooler. Why? Heatsinks with Fans work much better and require
less maintenance.

I suggest trying out the Noctua NH-D15, Premium CPU Cooler with 2x NF-A15
PWM 140mm Fans. This CPU cooler runs about $60.00 on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-heatpipe-NF-A15-140mm/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ref=sxin_3_ac_d_rm?ac_md=0-0-bm9jdHVyYQ%3D%3D-ac_d_rm&cv_ct_cx=Noctura&dchild=1&keywords=Noctura&pd_rd_i=B00L7UZMAK&pd_rd_r=d4237e58-f40e-48e3-bd1b-a1cd0e51ae8c&pd_rd_w=k1RVg&pd_rd_wg=WsU2W&pf_rd_p=96e196e3-02fe-420a-8e27-9285fc9434dd&pf_rd_r=4M46G8G34DFDZFAQ9PXB&psc=1&qid=1588016896&sr=1-1-12d4272d-8adb-4121-8624-135149aa9081

I have this same cooler cooling my i7-9700k and it is running overclocked
at 5.08GHz. The temperatures are 99 degrees F to 148 degrees F, depending
on the load.

Just thought, I'd put some info into the mix here.

[H] Download Speeds slow, but Speed Test is good

2020-02-26 Thread Beave
I have an interesting problem.

The download speeds of the computer go to a crawl overnight. A Speed Test
is done and it maxs out at 212Mbs by 21Mbs. On the downloads goes 51kbs to
105kbs.

A simple reset of the computer fixes the problem. I have tried the
computer's firewall, no go. The Router, no go.

Any Ideas?

Something you might want to keep in mind. The 970 Pro is not a SATA HD.

[H] SoundBlaster XFI Extreme Audio Problems

2009-02-09 Thread Beave
Hello all,

I have a problem that is actually frustrating me. The problem is with the
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme Audio PCI-E I have.

The Problem is that every once in awhile while watching videos or playing Video
Games the Sound Driver crashes and no sound comes out of the sound card.
Sometimes I am able to switch the sound device to the USB headphones I have and
it works, sometimes it does not and need to reboot the computer. Either way in
order to get the X-Fi to work I need to reboot the computer.

System setup:
Asus P5N-T nForce 580i motherboard
Intel 2.93GHz Core 2 Extreme Edition
Asus branded nVidia 8800 GTX Video Card
Creative Soundblaster X-FI PCI-E ExtremeAudio
4GB of Dominator 1066 DDR2 memory

I have removed the device and removed the drivers and it sill happens. I’m
getting close to wits end.

Regards,

My HTPC recently started shutting down when I tell it to reboot. It's
running Vista. The reboot command goes in, everything closes nice and
cleanly and then it simply shuts off instead of rebooting. Pressing the
power button brings it right back up.

It's annoying because if I'm away from home and it does an auto reboot after
a windows update or I need to remotely reboot it, the server is down until I
can get back home.

Any thoughts? BIOS setting maybe?

Re: [H] No recovery discs or partitions

2008-08-11 Thread Beave
First did you look at the drive with a disk editor like Winhex? If not give it
a look.

Inspect sector 0. Use the MBR template in the Template manager to view
available partitions, if there is any. If there are partitions listed, check to
see if the large one is 07h (NTFS). If there are no partitions listed, then
the Partition/MBR Sector has been rewritten.

I almost went though rewriting the partition table. Since its a long process
and takes some math, I will not go into it. If your clients wants the data
recovered use RStudio R-Tools to recover the data. If you want a professional
to work on it let me know.

Hello,

Have a guy that brought in his Wal-Mart sold HP/Crapaq laptop.
He tells me he was surfing pr0n and got a message that his system was
infected and he just shut down his system and called me. I asked him
if this was possibly a pop up ad and he doesn't think it was. However,
he doesn't know if the AV was working or even current. The system is
around 6 - 7 months old. It has Vista Home Premium OEM on the COA.
I took the drive out and tried to access it and as soon as
Windows explorer tries to access it asks me to format it. I am using
Win2K Pro to do this but last I knew Vista had WinFS left out so I
assume it uses NTFS or at least FAT32. So I should be able to read it.
I can only assume the drive got wiped out. The problem now is he
didn't get any discs with it and since the drive is wiped out the
recovery partition is also gone. I would try to recover the file
system but I am thinking maybe it would be better to start from
scratch. I had never seen this kind of damage from a infection though
but he denies any other issues with the unit, no grinding noises to
make me suspect HDD issues.
Since I only have a copy of Vista Business upgrade (ala MAPS) I
guess all I can do is ask for a recovery disc from HP/Crapaq?

Re: [H] cpu coolers ? Az in the summer :{(

2008-06-27 Thread Beave
Hello,

-==-
Big issue with new mobo's IMHO is despite a plethora of fan & temp probe
headers there's a lack of good, free software to control/monitor since MBM is a
dead project.

As sweet as the Asus Rampage is, Q-Fan2 & Asus Probe2 software suck. So an
otherwise killer 2 or 3 IC package that comprises an extensive monitoring & fan
control setup sits useless without proper software. Tried Everest to at least
monitor but it it's polling seems to frakk the HDD controller causing all HDD's
to suddenly disappear from time to time & no explanation why. Sure wish there
was a GOOD software project for Windows like Linux has providing better generic
SMB/I2C drivers & controls!
-==-

Look into nVidia and or the motherboard manufacturer for those utilities. I
currently had to replace my nForce 680i due to a cmos error that could not be
recovered with a nForce 780i. Yes I know, but I did not have any DDR3 memory
or the money to spend on DDR3 for the 790i chipset.

So, we all need to look to our motherboard manaufacturers and Chipset makers
for that software utility now. Luckily, Asus and nVidia makes a the utilities
there.

That Fan has a 3 pin connector. Also, it comes with a little fan controller as
well you can set it to were you want. I have the 3 pin connected directly to
the Motherboard in the CPU FAN connector. THe fan does speed up and slow down
when needed.

To put the CPU fan on you will need to remove te mother board to put on the
Bottom Plate part so the the Fan is supported. It is the only drawback of the
setup.

I have been using Zalman fans since I got my AMD FX-60. I use an intel Core 2

strong. Although, I did need to replace the motherboard just recently and 1 of

I have not changed the CPU fan yet since the computer was built.

Good luck in your search.

I decided to give this a try with the same video. VLC does choke,
although I am only using less then 20 percent CPU when it chokes.

How did you get PowerDVD 8 to play the mkv file? It won't play if for
me. I have the same codecs installed, and I have plenty of hardware
muscle to do this. PowerDVD ignores the file.

Here are the facts: A large, single 12-volt rail (without a 240VA limit) can
transfer 100% of the 12-volt output from the PSU to the computer, while a
multi-rail 12-volt design has distribution losses of up to 30% of the power
supply's rating. Those losses occur because power literally gets "trapped"
on under-utilized rails. For example, if the 12-volt rail that powers the
CPU is rated for 17 amps and the CPU only uses 7A, the remaining 10A is
unusable, since it is isolated from the rest of the system.

Since the maximum current from any one 12-volt rail of a multiple-rail PSU
is limited to 20 amps (240VA / 12 volts = 20 amps), PCs with
high-performance components that draw over 20 amps from the same rail are
subject to over-current shutdowns. With power requirements for multiple
processors and graphics cards continuing to grow, the multiple-rail design,
with its 240VA limit per rail, is basically obsolete.

Is a single 60A 12V rail better than multiple 12V
rails totaling ~60A? Too bad the
Red version is not on sale also!

Who makes the Silencer Quad for PCP&C?

That is a nice power supply. In fact I have one, but got it over one and a

that the power supply is a lot longer from front to back than standard power
supplies, you will probably need to get a new case or modify existing case.

Good lcuk with the awesome power supply,

Looks good. 7 Degrees C is something that helps out. Make it so that the
power supply blows air out to the rear of the case. Also try to make it so
there is no or hardly any interruption in the air flow from the front of the
case thru the power supply.

My next case is going to be either TJ09 or TJ10 from Silverstone. If I get
the TJ10. I'll get he ESA version of it.

Hi,

Well I didn't get much time to play but the temps have dropped by about
7degrees C just by moving turning some fans around. Here is what I have
now, I hope it makes sense.

Side 1

--O--
| FD |
ox2 I HD i
| HD i
| HD i
| CD |
| |
|PSU|
| |
| OCpu |
V |

Other side

--O--
|FD |
i HD O |
i HD |
i HD|
|DVD|
| |
|---PSU |
| |
| Cpu |
| V
i V
i |
-

Key:
HD = Hard disc
FD = Floppy disc
V  = Video

i/o = 80mm fans except in front of HD which are 30mm
I/O = 120mm fans

One point to note and I hadn't really paid any attention to this before
but the new PSU is so long it separates the bottom of the case from the
top. The 120mm exhaust fan above the CPU seems to be doing the job for
the bottom of the case now that I have proper air flow.

No crashes so far, but I still may look at getting a different case
eventually to allow for full case airflow.

Thanks for all the help,

Gary

Re: [H] Water-cooling

2008-04-23 Thread The Beave
Look into your case and make sure your airflow is working well. This means
get the power supply cables and mother board cables out of the middle of the
case and try to hide them. Also, put some quality fans in the case, may make
it loud once the fans turn on full, but at least it will keep the components
cool.

Another thing you may want to look at is the power supply. Make sure it is
moving air thru it and keeping cool. Why? The hotter the power supply the
less power the power supply will give to your computer components.

Good example of computer wiring:

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=1157

I agree 100% and I was trying to get that across in my note. The X38 is
head and shoulders better than the 780i. It's just that I had a burning
desire to play with SLI.

I think the crashes are certainly heat related as they will only happen
whilst I have been playing games for a while.

I am considering swapping out the 9600GT for a 9800GT2 but the NB temp
is still very concerning, the StrikerII motherboard is the big issue
here. It's a piece of crap.

So with all that said. I would like to get the 780 running stable just
because I'm not going to let it get the better of me. (I still have the
X38 so will probably switch it back eventually)

No offense, but I would call going from an x38 to a 780i a downgrade,
not an upgrade, unless you must have SLI - and even then I'm not sure of
the value/performance ratio of two 9600GTs vs a single 9800GTX.

Water cooling should not be required in a non-overclocked system these
days, even an SLI rig. You have much deeper problems than heat if you
are experiencing crashes like that. I wouldn't suspect power either.

IN the Storagereview article they said WDC was going to make a version of the

replace the Icepak 3.5" Part and use something different. WDC will lose a

I myself think the drive will work great for the gaming machines. It's fast,
quiet, cool and low of power. I am also thinking if any notebooks will get

Western Digital made a fatal mistake, which will keep me from using many
of these drives.

The drive is a 2.5" drive in a heatsink. Instead of putting the drive
in the middle, and using an extension cable set to put the SATA and SATA
power connectors in the "correct" location, they put the drive at the
back. This means that I can't use the drive in a sata/sas hot swap unit.

Installed both release SP1's on my Gaming computer and the Laptop I am
using. I had to remove the PR beta version on the gaming computer though to
install it. There is a definite network speed increase and drive access
speed increase.

Only bad thing it took like 4 reboots, maybe more to install in the two
computers. I for see much business coming my due to people being inpatient.

Re: [H] Vista class action

2008-03-01 Thread The Beave
Brian,

I know the pain about lowering graphics requirements for Vista, I have a MPC
that is almost unusable with Vista Premium. Although, plays videos and
songs very nicely. Too bad no video games though. My laptop is a XPS Gen 2
and it is still going strong with Vista Ultimate installed (Installed it
because of work requirements).

The total opposite can be said for my gaming computer. It has Windows Vista
Ultimate and it runs just as fast as it did with XP MCD. Of course this
computer has upper end gear though. Only thing I am pissed about is
Directsound and the inability to decode 5.1 on SD-PIF. But, alas I live with
it.

I have a question though, were did the e-mails come from? Did Microsoft give
them freely or was there a court order for them? I did not remember
anything of mentioning that. If they have not been given freely by
Microsoft or a court order was used the person that handed them can be
charged for theft of the e-mails, since the e-mail belong to Microsoft.

I have personally seen cases of people brought to court for illegally using
company e-mail for personal and/or illegal use. My job gets me into those
situations sometimes :(

The plot thickens. 158 pages of internal Microsoft emails on the
matter have turned up as part of the court discovery process. This
page has a good overview as well as links to the whole pdf:

http://apcmag.com/8344/has_vista_lost_all_credibility

Some gems:

"In the end, however, the need to placate other hardware vendors
became a major factor -- particularly Intel, which was keen to keep
selling its 915 graphics chipset, which couldn't handle Aero at that
point. 'In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make
their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards
with 915 graphics embedded," general manager John Kalkman wrote. "It
was a mistake on our part to change the original graphics
requirements.'"

"In an email to Ballmer, Steven Sinofsky wrote, 'No one really
believed we would ever ship, so they didn't start the work until late
2006. This led to lack of availability. For example, my home
multi-function printer did not have drivers until 2/2 and even pulled
their drivers and re-released them [Brother].'"

"Sinofsky continued, 'Massive changes in the underpinning for video
and audio led to a really poor experience at RTM, especially with
respect to Windows Media Center. This change led to incompatibilities.
For example, you don't get Aero with an XP [graphics] driver, but your
card might not (ever) have a Vista driver.'"

That last one many of us saw coming a mile away, as Microsoft was
forced to re-write the entire audio/video subsystem at the last minute
to placate the Hollywood crowd and allow for HD playback.

Have you tried looking at the root in XP explorer? There might be a file
with some naming error in it. Try to delete the file if it is not of any
value. If that does not work try using a folder utility like FAR to delete

Also, this could mean the command dir is damaged somehow and you will need
to fix the OS itself. This is rather rare, but I have seen it in the past.

Re: [H] Notebook hard drives

2008-02-21 Thread The Beave
You need to figure out if the notebook hard drive is SATA or PATA. Once you
figured that out, try to find a drive with fall protection. Toshiba makes
some good drives for this, but are a bit slow in speed. If your looking for
performance, Samsung has some good ones out right now. Unfortunately the
Western Digital Notebook drives run hot and use a lot of voltage.

Also, my back up is like 3 fold. Laptop is backup'd to main computer at home
over network. Home computer is backed up to External FireWare drive.
Firewire drive is backup'd at work and stored on servers there. Right now
it's about 350GB of data.

I've only had a laptop for about 18 months now and just experienced my first
HD failure. I actually got a heads-up from SMART a few days prior that
failure was imminent so no data was lost. But I've never dealt with
notebook HDs before so I was wondering if there was anything I should be
looking for in a replacement.

I have heard that just recently they came out with drives with on-board
encryption. I would love to have that but I'm guessing that the BIOS needs
to support it. The laptop is an HP NC600 series that I bought refurbished
so it's a few years old. Centrino-based and works just fine for what I
need.

Are there any incompatibility things that I should be on the look out for?
Or are most notebook drives pretty much interchangeable?

Re: [H] I'm losin' it...

2008-01-17 Thread The Beave
Servo tracks are not red only. Parts of them are changed on a constant
basis, such as the growing bad sector list, etc. The servo tracks are
written normally like regular data on the media surface. The permanent
components of the servo are sometimes written to the Processor or CMOS of
the hard drive.

Servo tracks are spread across all sides of the hard drive so the sides can
sync with each other for optimum performance. Hard Drives are quite
complicated when you look at the actual components and whats actually
written to the media surface.

Yeah, I didn't mess around. I backed up - twice actually. Now if I can
just get the replacement drive to boot properly.
It's the dual boot thing that's giving me grief.

Most SMART errors are letting you know the drive will fail. There is an
ANSI standard for the Errors you receive. I forget where I used to get the
codes. Now a days I just get the drive duplicated as soon as possible.

IMO, most SMART problems are due to the Track 0 (Servo Tracks) are being
destroyed for some reason or another. You are unable to repair those
sectors, it has valuable servo information about your unique hard drive. On
the other hand it could be a CC error in the Upper area as well that's
creating the error. I would still duplicate it and get it replaced.

Rule 1: Back the data up
Rule 2: See rule one
Rule 3: No Backup, cry and look for ways to get it back.

Hello,

I think I am losing it. I have a Maxtor drive that *may* be going out
on me. I came in to see my WinXP Pro SP2 machine with a powered
monitor but all black screen (It should have been on power save).
System was (i think) not responding. So I reboot and then come back
later to the same thing. So I go through the event viewer and see
this:

So I already know that SMART isn't *always* smart but I start
xcopy'ing everything nonetheless. I grab my famous PROGRAMS DISCS and
start loading Partition Magic and Drive Image. I pick another drive in
this same system (there are 4 physical drives - 2 on Promise 100
card) and xcopy both partition on the drive over to this new(ish) one.
I have to do this because the original and possibly failing drive is a
30gb split in half with a FAT32 Win98 install on C: (First half of
drive) and a NTFS WinXP Pro install on E: (Second half of the drive)
AND the new one is a 20GB. Size isn't the same so Drive Image won't do
a copy disk to disk for me. No worries, I think, I partition the 20GB
in FAT32 the first 40% and NTFS the last 60%. I copy the data over
(again). I make sure boot.ini (on first partition) and ntdetect.com
and all that are there on that 98 partition and all that. They are
exactly the same. So I pull the system swpa the drive and put the 20GB
in the (failing?) 30gb spot and jumper them etc. I mark the 20GB drive
active with 98 disk AND do a fixmbr and fixboot with XP and still the
drive will only boot to 98. If I mark the NTFS/XP partition it just
sits blinking cursor - no boot menu - no nothing. WTF am I missing
here?

Is there a program that can query SMART error messages? I would really
like to know what is wrong with the drive because it's still just chugging
along here. Thank god the bios allows me to boot from scsi devices.

The Dell Switches we got are awesome. Very nice...

The XPS Laptop I got very nice next day service on it and everything. Only
the video card broke down, replaced next day.

The Dell Inspiron I got for a friend not so good. It broke down numerous

It was, but remember its Retail not OEM. Right now Vista Ultimate goes for
$189.99 for 64-bit and $169.99 for 32-bit. Also, the Retail version has

[H] AMD's Odd Phenom

2007-12-23 Thread The Beave
Soon after AMD announced its new triple-core Phenom processor, the jokes
began. Some people think a multicore processor with an odd number of cores
is...well, odd. Others ridiculed AMD for making triple-core chips by
disabling one core on a defective quad-core die. Intel CEO Paul Otellini
cracked, "We see a distinct advantage in having all the cores on our dies

Actually, there's nothing odd about an odd number of processors. For 30

My primary three year old computer has been using Logitech cordless
mouse/keyboad combinations since I built it. I started with a optical
mouse set, and then moved on to a Laser mouse set (which I love), and
just recently attempted to upgrade to a MX5000 which is a newer laser
mouse with bluetooth, a LCD display on the keyboard and a bluetooth hub.

I have been unable to get it installed. The bluetooth stuff just
chokes, plus the mouse/keyboard keeps disconnecting... of course, I
can't get pass the bluetooth part of the install. I am doing a clean
install, and I disable anti virus, firewall everything thing I can
stop from loading at boot up. And I boot up clean, and then attempt
a install.

But I can't get it installed. First time I have ever had a problem
with Logitech. I see lots of older complaints about the MX5000 but it
has been around for over a year and you think they would of corrected
them by now? Anybody have any personal experience with this product
or Logitech bluetooh. I am just about to give up trying.

Hello,

I myself use and recommend the Chenbro RM31212B #U Raid/Server Rack mount
case.

http://usa.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?serno=33

Right now I have 2 Dual core Xeons in the system with 12 500GB Hard drives
in Raid 5+1 with spare configuration.

The only con I can say is get a powerful Power supply if you want to put in
more than 12 HD's. I use a 550w atm and it does not want to power up all
the HDs on power up sometimes, so I have to reset the computer to get it to

Nice gear. We had that problem with the T3 set too with people saying BC
coming who cares. The thing is a lot of that kept playing that did not want
to do it complained that some of the gear would have made things a lot
easier in BC at the start.

If your looking to transfer there are only two servers I recommend atm.
Kel'Thuzad, believe it or not KT gets queues at prime time, and Malganis

I had 7/8 T1 (The robe didn't drop until I already had 5/5 T2.5), 7/8 T2

Hello,

So I've been doing WoW (because of this list mind you) for 3 years. It
was better (and worse - mostly better) then EQ. My guild is nearly
thru the end game content. I'm not excited about WotLK expansion. I'm
pretty disgusted with the lack of work done by the artists in this
game. I think overall, my WoW days are drawing to an end. However,
once again, the list did well by me in getting me into this game.

So, now my question are these.
What are you playing now and what do you plan to play?

Thanks.

I only have a 17" clearance and the 19"-20" TVs look about the right size.

Any comments?

BTW, I have had not one crash on my gaming machine with Vista Ultimate on it

Now for using other Virus software you can. But you need to know how turn
off the Windows stuff. I use Norton 360, I know it is kind of lame, but it
was free and got it running on 3 computers which is in the license
agreement.

I agree the computer asking me if I am sure if I want to run this in admin
mode. I have a lot of Gaming stuff t hat needs to have it running in admin
mode in order to work. Gets annoying every time I turn the computer on or
reset the computer.

If you have a computer that was updated within a year or so of release of

you buy a new computer you'll love it.

All these Caps being damaged messages reminds to let you guys know that you
can drastically reduce the problem by actually buying high end Power
Supplies. If you spent $50.00 or less on a power supply, well may I say you
get what you paid for.

The power supply is the most important part of the whole computer, not the
CPU or RAM. If you get a power supply that sends bad voltage to the
motherboard and other components in the computer, you're going to have a
crappy computer. As you can see I am a big proponent of Quality Power
Supplies.

The current Tower I made uses a PC Power and Cooling power Supply

I am running vista ultimate right now on my gaming rig. It's slow
as shit, even copying files via network is slower, much slower.
I changed the UI to be like XP but games lag when they did not lag
before in XP. I have a core2duo 2.4Ghz, 2G ram, 10K Raptor and 8800 GTX.
The box should scream like it does in XP but alas it does not. The audio
subsystem in vista is an utter joke, thanks MSFT. Plese make DX10 available
for XP, vista should never have been released. UAC is a joke and to most
users annoying as hell. Aero is cool for about 5 minutes, thanks for
worthless
eye candy. So what does Vista offer over XP besides DX10? Headaches and
pain.

That is one of the problems with Vista, there 's like 5 or 6 versions. This
is where people get discouraged and have a bad experience with Vista.

Slower? It is a bit slower on my Laptop, but on my Gaming machine it
actually works faster, especially in games. I think it because of the multi
cores.

Actually, It does not do much more than XP does. In fact I would not
recommend buying the OS to replace XP. But if you get a new computer I
would recommend getting the OS. When getting the OS, I recommend getting
Home Premium or Higher.

Learning Vista? What the heck? If you don't like the or have problems With
Windows Aero, you can set it to Windows XP look. I for one think it is much
simpler to use. But then I am used to Linux, Mac and XP before hand and have
a decent understanding how OS's work.

I suggest you take a look on a computer demo at Best Buy or Fry's
Electronics. Move around on the desktop and see how effortlessly it is to
move around. The only thing I do not like it wants you to confirm to run
application in Admin mode, which can be a good thing.

I don't want to spend the time the new OS learning curve would
require only to have something prettier only to have an OS that costs
more, doesn't work any faster than the one I'm presently using. If
you'll examine MSFT's history every other OS has been troublesome.

I agree with Joe User. If you have to learn everything over you may
as well get an Apple. Remember the average end luser doesn't care
about hardware like we do as they just want the darned thing to run.
Vista has files & folders relocated via name space & extra links that
it makes it almost impossible to find the real files just like a Mac.

A Vista or Mac system for me, NO THANKS.

I use Vista Ultimate on my laptop and Gaming computer. I have only minor
problems, but Vista has worked very well.

Vista only has an issue with SLI. nVidia has been lagging on this problem.
Although, I have recently replaced my 2 nVidia 7900 GTX's with 1 8800 GTX
and I get more fps in World of Warcraft and other games.

The Peripheral manufacturers need to work on their drivers for Vista. This
is the only problem. If you don't use a Soundblaster sound card or
nvidia/ATI video cards you may have problems with Vista. Also, Vista 32-bit
is the only one I would recommend for gaming atm. If you do get Vista for
gaming get Premium version or higher.

I have an ancient Tyan S1854 motherboard and I put a 320GB HD in
it. The BIOS recognizes it as being 132MB, and Windows Explorer says
it's a 128GB partition, but diskpart says it's a 310GB partition. Is
Explorer simply showing me an incorrect lower number, or is diskpart wrong?

Too add what the others are giving out. Make sure they have the correct
modem information. A lot of times it gets messed up as well. I've had this
happen to me on 2 occasions.

BTW, I use a Linksys cable modem and a Linksys Broadband router as separate
components. Never get the ones with cable modem and router as one unit,
nothing but headaches.

I have a customer who is getting disconnect problems with his SB5101
(provided by his ISP.) He surfs for 5 to 10 minutes, then it
disconnects (he get's page not found) for about five minutes, then it
comes back up for 5 to 10 minutes. I looked at the modem log file,
and the date keeps reverting back to 1970 in the log entries. In my
experience, that is due to a provisioning problem at the ISP (wrong
modem in their configuration) but of course, they are blaming his
router (which is from us, and I used it for twelve hours on my SB5101
at home and it worked fine.) I don't know enough about the log
entries to be able to tell him, "see this error, this proves a modem
problem" and I can't find anything useful googling the errors (except
that it might be a firmware problem, but I don't see anywhere to
download firmware.) Does anyone have more information (or a place I
can get more information) on the SB5101s?

Does the computer run in safe mode? If so you can see if anything runs
there. Also, Check the Task Manager and see if there is any software
running that looks fishy (Pun intended).

There is a lot of Spyware that locks computers down and do not let you run
certain utilities. I have seen this in the past. The funny thing is the
person who owns the computer has no idea how they got in there.

Have a REALLY screwed up one. Spyware or something has basically locked out
everything. While I did get the control panel back none of the applets run.
gpedit.msc says file not found.

can not manage users. Was able to fix this a little and it is better but
some of this needs to be restored. I suspect a whole system restore is
needed to be honest but I always respect a challenge. :-D

Any suggestions will be helpful. ( or tools )

The armor fully weighted (2 drives, 2 opticals, board, 2 GTX, etc.) is
66lbs. So, heavy so & so.

It's not really that much of a dust magnet. We sent one to NY a while back
that was a dead silent 8800GTX build; water cooled CPU; water cooled
SLI-8800GTX.

Bad thing about it: had to be Vista 64, and right now, Nvidia's driver
support for Vista, and especially Vista 64 SUCKS. Absolutely SUCKS.

It's just one of those things.. in XP, he gets full SLI. In Vista 64, Vista
only sees 1 card, and he gets way slower performance. The 680i chipset, for
all of it's pros, has some issues still. Asus came out with the P5N32-E
Plus, which is a hybrid chipset, the 650 northbridge and the AMD 590
southbridge.. so you get full x32 SLI, but it's so much more stable under
Vista 64 that it's sickening. Nothing wrong under Vista 32 or XP with the
680i, but under Vista 64, the P5N32-E just slices and dices everything out
there.

I'm going to try to take a lot of pictures today and post links, get this
list back on hardware. I checked the benches for what's being built and at
least I can get some good pics of an AMD Quad system, and a few other
oddballs I can get some pictures of to post and get some hardware discussion
going :)

FYI-

I am piling up in the backchannel and have now heard from 12 people who say
they can't post and keep getting bumped. Jim, my email to you bounces..
things OK?

Re: [H] 32bit PCI card in 64 bit slot?

2005-04-21 Thread Tim \";The Beave\" Lider
Harry good Explanation. Although, here is a story.
This is a story of a SuperMicro Board and the tale of 64-bit cards. The
SuperMicro board did run the cards (NIC/RAID controller) but not to the
fullest extent. After moving the Cards to a 32-bit PCI the cards ran
accordingly. Yes, it was a weird situation.

I wish the rule applied to all, but it does not :(
Harry McGregor wrote:
Ok,
Since none of the collective have really given you the true straight up
answer, here it is.
It is NOT the 32bit vs 64Bit that is an issue. The issue is one of
speed and voltage.
PCI v2.2 exists in the following forms (this does not include PCI-X or
PCI-E)
32bit 33MHz 5 Volt (this is the most common standard PCI)
32bit 66MHz 3.3 Volt (not very common slot wise, but a reasonable number
of cards can do it)
64bit 33MHz 5 Volt (A lot of Mac G4 computers used this)
64bit 66Mhz 3.3 Volt (most common server PCI bus, and has been extended
to higher speeds with PCI-X)
Older athlon MP boards used the 64bit 33MHz 5 volt (Tyan Tiger MP),
while newer ones used the 64 bit 66MHz 3.3 Volt (Tyan Tiger MPX).
It's all in the cutting of the card, and the blocks in the slot. If the
card physically fits, it will run (or the designer should be shot).
A 32bit card will run in a 64 bit slot, and 64 bit card will run in a 32
bit slot (I have a number of 3ware cards in 32 bit slots right now).
A lot of cards are 3.3volt and 5 volt tolerant, some are not. The
Digium quad T1 cards are a good example. The TE405P is 5 Volt ONLY, and
the TE410P is 3.3 Volt ONLY. We have a 32bit SCSI card that is 66MHz
and 3.3 volt capable, plugged into a 64Bit 66MHz slot on one server.
PCI is quite nice in that it's hard to screw up physically. The notches
in the card tell you what it can fit into and work with.
Slots come in either 3.3Volt or 5 volt. Cards can be cut to be either
universal or to be specific voltages
A 5 volt only 32bit card will have one notch about 1/2" from the back of
the slot (reverse of the back of the case)
A universal 32bit card will have two notches cut into it.
A universal 64bit card will have three notches cut into it.

A 3.3 volt only 64 bit card will have one notch 1/2" from the back of
the case, and one notch about 1.5" from the back of the cardslot.
A 5 volt only 64 bit card will have two notches separated by about 1/2"
Digium has a good page that shows it:
