Re: [IRCA] Alaska AM DX December 10th

2016-12-11 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Walt: CKYL gives out a complete ID around 10 - 5 minutes before TOH that
starts with their AM, followed by the FM and all their repeaters. However,
the AM won't be around much longer as they have an application into the CRTC
to shut it down and become a FM station. You said that they are difficult to
get by, at least you can get by them. I live a mile from their transmitter
and are impossible to get by. Can't happen soon enough for me.

Paul, thanks for reminding us that there's still some AM in Canada's
north. I had forgotten about Whitehorse, since the CBC left their AM
channel (which I often heard in Masset) a few years ago. A station I'll
need to try for, although for me, it will be difficult to get past CHNL
Kamloops, and especially CKYL in Peace River (the usual occupant
on-channel). I note that they don't give their MW channel, just the FM
frequency. Not a good sign! 73, Walt

2015-09-27 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Many carriers up here Don. Spread across the band from 153 to the high 1400’s.
Several producing audio with 1413 being the best, with two men talking in what
sounded like Russian. Only snippets of audio from 189. 1215 produced very poor
audio at time, otherwise just a carrier. The remainder of the audio producers
were too low to get the language. All these were heard in the period from 0245
to 04:10 when they started to fade down.

Same up here Don. Almost every split frequency from 189 to 1602 had a carrier
on it. Several with audio. France on 1206, 1278 & 1377; Germany on 1269 & 1422

Re: [IRCA] early TA's in Alberta Aug 30

2015-08-31 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Don:

Many thanks for the heads up. Been thinking I should be checking out the band,
but never quite got around to doing it.

Didn’t forget tonight tho. Dozens of carriers from a low of 189 to above the
1500’s, tho most were above 999, Many were producing audio: France on 1206,
1278, 1377, 1577; Germany on 1107, 1422; UK on 909, 1053, 1089, 1215, 1053,
1341; Unid on1359.

The highlight of the session was the UK on 1341 which turned out to the BBC’s
Radio Ulster transmitter in Northern Ireland. No formal ID because it faded out
at the TOH, but two men with Irish accents talking and a mention of the BBC at
06:01 was sufficient for me.

Will go over the recording tomorrow, to see if there are any more gems to be
found.

Re: [IRCA] early TA's in Alberta Aug 30

2015-08-31 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Don:

I started listening shortly after sunset which occurs around 20:45 local this
time of year. At first there were just a few carriers and faint audio from
1377-France and 1422-Germany. And it just got better from there. I did see
carriers on both 1458 and 1485, but no audio. I stopped listening somewhere
around 22:30 planning on going over the recording today. For the very first
time since I bought the Perseus, it failed to record. Dunno why as it recorded
perfectly earlier and again later on.

I’ve given up on 1566-Benin for this year. For me the carriers peaked around
the middle of August and slowly faded down each evening after that. Never got
any better than a strong carrier on the brink of producing audio. There was a
very faint carrier there yesterday evening, but no idea who.

Also curious if Nigel or any other Albertans are hearing anything?

0245 just ~30m after sunset and things are very quiet here - faint hets on
a few channels except for 1521 which has a decent solid carrier. But its
the ONLY one. Not visible on the old Eu or North EU beverages but well
defined on the new Eu wire.

1566 only. 1215 was probably the UK, but I don't know who was on 1566 as I
have never logged a TA here, but could have been Iran.

[IRCA] Question to the left coast guys

2014-08-13 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi All:

Early this morning I heard a pefect ID for CBC Radio One that mentioned 88.1
and 690, on 530kHz. I have spent some time on line searching for a CBC repeater
on 530 with any success, so does anyone know of this?

Another possibility, it could have been a mixing product from my local on 610.
Last week one of their towers was struck by lightning and they were off air,
both their AM and FM for more than a day. Both are back up now tho they both
sound terrible. The AM is running it's full 10kW, but the modulation is way
down to the point of not being able to hear it on my truck radio. The FM is LH
channel only and up and down in volume. If what I heard on 530 was caused by
CKYL-610, I haven't yet been able to figure out the math. In the past when I've
heard mixing products caused by CKYL, it's always been there underneath the
product signal. Not this time. Anyone have any suggestions?

The radio used here was my Perseus and the antenna my western beverage.

[IRCA] Last nights DX test

2014-03-22 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Just gone thru my recording from the KCKM-1330 test as I was unable to DX it
live. The sweep tones were most noticable under a very strong CJYM, tho there
were fade down periods with other stations under it. The morse also made it
thru once I figured it was code I was hearing, tho not as noticable the sweeps.
I don't read morse so was unable to figure out what it said. Monahans is just
under 2000 miles from here.

Many thanks to all those that made this test possible.

[IRCA] A heads up for the Vancouver Island guys

2013-08-29 Thread Mike Stonebridge
For the past couple of weeks I've been seeing TA carriers on the waterfall
display on my Perseus. These started on August 16 with carriers on 153 and 162
and progressed to a few in the upper portion of the MW band most evenings and
usually starting to appear shortly after local sunset. Last evening was the
best so far with at least 20 carriers, several of which were producing faint
audio. These were 1206-France, 1215-UK and 1422-Germany. Not the earliest I've
heard TAs from here, but pretty close. Past few seasons have been very sparse
up here for TAs and you guys have done much better than I have. Just thought
I'd let you know they are back.

[IRCA] Last nights WKVQ test.

2011-12-31 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Unlike everyone else out west, I did hear one very small portion of last nights
test. At 00:02:50 I heard an ID in morse followed by what can only be described
as a whoop whoop sound. Listened to the whole half hour and never heard any
more, and what I did hear was only made possible because someone very kindly
mentioned the times of when they had heard the morse IDs. Without this prior
knowledge I don't think I would have heard it. I guess this makes up for me not
hearing the previous test. Heard with my Perseus using my east/west beverage.

Many thanks to Craig Baker, Jim Chenard and Saul Chernos for making this
possible.

Hi Earl,

from the East coast and I'm still enjoying it :-)

Congrats!

After chasing carriers of varying strength almost nightly for the last
few weeks, and occasionally getting brief snippets of barely readable
audio, I finally got enough audio tonight to positively confirm a
parallel with Absolute Radio 1215-UK's web stream. The carrier was the
strongest I've heard it in the last few weeks, reasonably strong; audio
was best in LSB to avoid local line noise. I used the RX-321's 1350 Hz
filter to avoid domestic slop, of which Philadelphia on 1210 was the most
egregious.

Around 0250 UTC was when things peaked, if you could call it that (at
least so far). That means I could get at best about 30 seconds of audio
every 5 minutes. But the audio was clear enough to be unmistakably
parallel to their web stream. Sheryl Crow song, soft-spoken British
accented male DJ (Christian O'Connell, according to the website), REM
song. Nirvana's Come As You Are was clearly heard earlier with its
unusual beat/rhythm, also paralleled to the web stream.
I know this is really ho-hum stuff for you East Coast types, but this
is my furthest catch ever, country number 20, catch number 987… First
transatlantic.

  Sincerely,

[IRCA] WGBW DX test

2011-10-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Listening last night while the test was on, 1590 was, as usual, one big jumble
of noise. Only IDs I heard at the time were for KBND and KFLE. So I quit
listening live as I knew, sooner or later, people would report hearing IDs and
TTs at certain times. And they did.

Armed with a list of what was heard at what time I went back over the recording
this morning and sure enough all the morse IDs and TTs were there, along with
flute music. Only thing missing were the voice IDs. Surprisingly, all this was
heard on my EWE as somehow I had forgotten to switch over to my E/W beverage.

Many thanks to all those responsible for making this happen.

It would appear that this station has pulled their AM plug even though it's
only been a month since the new FM officially signed on. No sign of it
yesterday or again this morning. My home here is only 50 miles from High
Prairie and there wasn't even a trace of a carrier on the Perseus waterfall.

However I'm not complaining! It's demise enabled me to log my first new 1020
station in many years. Yesterday evening I logged KJJK Fergus Falls, MN with a
full ID @ 17:00MST. A surprisingly good signal for the 370 watts it should have

sun here is only 30 minutes or so past it's zenith so it was real early for
a TA. In all I had around 30 or so with audio plus about the same number of
carriers before they faded down around sunset. Most were European in origin
with only a couple from the middle east. Some hadn't been heard here in
years, like 945 711 from France and others were regulars like 1134-Croatia
and UK-1215. Two frequencies, 855 and 1152, each had 2 stations fighting for
dominance. The beauty of owning a Perseus is the ability to record the whole
band while listening to one particular frequency. The downside is the huge
files it produces and the time it takes to run thru them all. I still wading
thru them.

[IRCA] Question time

2010-01-06 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

A short while ago at 1900 EST (00:00UTC) I heard a VOA ID and news in English
on 1539 which was followed by someone speaking in a language that sounded
somewhat similar to Arabic. Who would this be? And where? I have been unable to
find anything definitive, other than a few mentions of Dhabayya in UAE. Would
this have been them? Perhaps one of you guys on the east coast would know.
Quite a few more TA's in at the same time.

[IRCA] Another Alaskan heard

2010-01-03 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

For the first time since I bought the Perseus some weeks back, I set it up last
night to record a block of frequencies centered on 580 using my Hawaiian BOG.
My goal was to try and log either KVMI or KQNG in Hawaii. As expected, the
Perseus produced some huge files to go over today which I did this afternoon.
I've got to find a better time to check them as I missed all the early
afternoon TA activity. Cutting a long story short, I never heard either target
station. However, at 06:00MST (08:00EST) I heard choral music and an ID for
KRSA-Petersburg, Alaska. Totally unexpected and very welcome here, my fourth
new Alaskan of the season.

Re: [IRCA] (ho hum) TA's

2010-01-02 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Another evening of TA evidence in western Canada. Some audio on
Farda-1575, though not very good level. Occasional weak talk on 1539, and
a fair carrier on 1503 are rounding things out at the moment. Not much
yet in the lower band.

Perhaps you should have checked earlier Nick. Up here there were many TAs in
as early as 13:30MST. Some with pretty fair signals. 1053 1215-UK were
both very good, as were 1134-Croatia and 855-Spain. Unusually 1575-Farda was
very poor, tho audible. Unfortunately the whole band was very noisy,
probably because of the very thick hoar frost which currently covers
everything including all my antennas and the trees they are attached to. Of
course all the BOGs are buried under the snow. Many other TAs had audio, tho
too poor to ID. The waterfall on the Perseus showed even more weak signals
without audio. As local sunset approached they all faded under the signals
from down south, tho the carriers still show on the Perseus.

Hi Everyone:

After 7 nights of sitting on 560, not consecutively I might add, but
spread out over several weeks, I heard my target station yesterday
morning. The recording started with faint C/W music under presumed CHTK.
At 09:00 MST (11:00) I heard and ID for KVOK-Kodiak and then into ABC
news. This is my third new Alaskan this season. Spending that amount of
time on 560 was not a total waste as I also added WIND and CHTK to my
overall logbook.

Interesting Nick. Up here TA's were in from around 14:30 local, possibly
even earlier if I had checked sooner, and all were above 999khz. This has to
be the earliest I have heard TA's from here, even in the past when
1314-Norway was a regular, I never had it in any earlier than around 15:30.
Some were at good levels too, like 999-Moldavia and 1089-Russia. 1575-UAE
was at a good level as well, unlike yesterday. Also, unlike yesterday I
managed one new one, which also was my second TA logged on a domestic
frequency, 1170-Russia, parallel to both 999 and 1089. I also had someone on
1395 with what sounded like Russian, so possibly Albania. Interestingly,
there was someone under the 999 Russian which sounded Arabic, so possibly
Morocco. The Saudi on 1521 was also heard at a fair level. As the sun
gradually sank in to the south western horizon and domestics faded up, the
TAs faded down to become nothing but carriers around sunset.

The TAs didn't come in as early as yesterday, nor are they in as well, but
still some pretty good signals this afternoon.

All you heard were in here early this afternoon while the sun was still
pretty high in the sky. Can't speak about yesterday as I never turned the
radio until after dark, some today were putting in pretty awesome signals.
Russia on 1089 was a minimum of S-9 with Moldova-999 and Croatia-1134 tied
for a very close second. Unfortunately I was called away around 3.30 local
and by the time I returned at 5.00 all that remained were carriers.
Strangely UAE-1575 was down in the noise. Unfortunately nothing new. All
heard on my EWE.

[IRCA] Perseus receiver

2009-11-01 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Ten days ago I placed an order for a Perseus receiver. Not a sudden decision by
any means as I had been thinking of getting one for almost a year. The sudden
death of my old Dell computer was the catalyst I needed. It was approaching
it's 9th birthday, well past it's best before date and not worth repairing so a
replacement suitable for driving a SDR was found. The Perseus arrived here last
Friday and I've spent the past two evenings learning something about it. All I
can say so far is Wow! this machine is incredible. Yesterday evening I could
see many TA's across the whole band, admittedly most of them were just
carriers, but to actually see them is beyond belief. Even on the longwave
beacons I could actually read the Morse code IDs being transmitted on the
screen. Yet months ago when I first read about this waterfall display in the
users manual I thought I will never use that and now I'm thinking I will use
it all the time. It's gonna take a while before I learn everyt!
hing it can do, but it's gonna be a fun time.

[IRCA] TAs

2009-10-07 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi All:

Many TAs in here tonight. First noted over an hour before local sunset. Most TA
split frequencies across the band had at least a carrier, many had audio, tho
mostly faint. A couple of surprises heard, english pop music on 945 which
paralled 1377 was Toulouse, France and the UK's Talksport on 1089, neither of
which is heard often here, whereas Talksport on 1053 is much more common as is
France on 1377. Two men talking rapidly in Spanish on 855 was most certainly
Spain which is a new country for me. I also heard music and arabic language
spoken on 1476 which could have been the UAE, plus music and arabic type
chanting on 1404 which could have been Iran, so 2 tentatives there. An hour or
so after local sunset the US stations had faded up, most TAs were nothing but
faint carriers. Nothing but faint carriers heard on longwave.

[IRCA] Albuquerque convention

2009-09-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

I'm now back home from the convention, arriving here around 5.pm MDT yesterday.
Flight from Albuquerque to Denver was very rough at times. Stayed Monday night
in Edmonton and drove home yesterday afternoon after doing some shopping. Now I
can receive IRCA messages again as I had shut them down before leaving.

Thanks to Mike and Bob for hosting a great convention. I had a great time. Nice
to meet up with all my radio friends again, and add some new faces to old
names. Thanks to Bob for putting all those pictures on the IRCA website. Hope I
can make it to Seaside next year.

Thanks again to everyone involved.

[IRCA] Tip for WDXR

2009-09-07 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Been spending time on 1510 lately because KGA is frequently missing or way down

and thinking it was KGA, I heard this ID:

1510 WWZN MA, Boston, barely above the noise floor with full ID
WWZN-1510-Boston at 04:00EDT 9/7

First time I've heard a MA station here in a long long time, and first new one
heard this season.

[IRCA] DUs and TAs

2009-08-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Nigel:

A few days back you were asking about DUs in Alberta? Well no DUs up here for
many years, but then I don't try for them these days. But I do have TAs to
report.

Nine days on ago Aug 14 I heard what I thought were faint TA carriers on 162
and 171, but I wasn't sure. Then all last week nothing. But this evening both
were back. 171 was of sufficient strength to produce audio if the band had been
quieter. Just too much t-storm noise. No idea who they were as several
countries have been logged on both frequencies. August 14 is the earliest I
have ever logged TAs from this location.

If anyone out there in Canada is thinking of getting one of the new portable

listed on Future Shop's website at the same price, tho they call it a

Thanks Willis. I agree it's not that often we come across an engineer that

I first heard WZFG the previous evening, but was unable to get a positive

Re: [IRCA] WZFG 1100

2009-03-28 Thread Mike Stonebridge
It took me a while to get a positive ID from this station. Last evening they
were in here loud and clear with many mentions of the floods, emergency
phone numbers, etc. Then slowly they faded down into the KFAX/KNZZ/WTAM mix
never to return. So I resorted to my usual method of overnight recordings
with my timer setup. And lo and behold slightly before 06:00MST (08:00EST) I
heard the Talkradio AM 11 Hundred, The Flag ID twice and at the TOH I
heard the full ID, AM 110 The Flag WZFG Dilworth Fargo Moorehead.

My thanks to everyone who reported this, and for giving the ID details. At
the very least I knew what to listen for, but as it turned out it wasn't
necessary as the ID I heard was loud and clear.

[IRCA] New Hawaiian heard

2009-03-16 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

Yesterday afternoon I was going thru my list of unlogged Hawaiian stations and
noticed KUMU-1500 was amongst them. Normally KSTP dominates here with a very
loud signal, but as the St Paul/Minneapolis sunrise is much earlier than here
this time of year, I thought I might have a chance at logging them. So for an
over night session I set my timer/radio on 1500 and crossed my fingers.
Naturally the first 8 TOH IDs were all from KSTP. At 06:00 and 07:00MST there
was someone under KSTP, but I know not who. At 08:00 (10:00EST) I heard the
following ID something unintelligible followed by 1500 KUMU Honolulu. The ID
was heard again at 09:00, though not as clearly. This is only my second new
Hawaiian station logged in the last 22 years. If only they were all as easy as
this one had been.

Re: [IRCA] Help needed with an unid

2008-12-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge

Hi Everyone:

Many thanks to all those that offered to help with my unid. It has now been
positively ID'd as WHIC Rochester.. 1460 AM the Cross

I still at a loss to how anyone could get that ID from my recording. My 70
year old ears are definitely not what they used to be. Just too many
Formula-1 car races I guess.

Thanks again

2008-12-23 Thread Mike Stonebridge

Deane:

They do not get out very well. My location here is only 165 miles to the NW
of Athabasca and I have trouble hearing them. They're there during the
daytime, but at night they might as well not exist.

[IRCA] Help needed with an unid

2008-12-22 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

I sat on 1460 last night for some time and at 23:00MST (01:00EST or 06:00UTC) I
heard a religious station. Right at the TOH a male voice gave the local time as
1.00am and gave out an ID which for the life of me I just cannot get, even tho
I've been over the recording many times. This was followed by a female voice
which said I was listening to: Global Catholic Radio Network or something
like that. According to my NRC log book there are many religious stations on
1460 but none that fit the syllables I heard. I have a 30 second audio clip in
wav format I could send to anyone interesting in helping me. It has to be in
wav format as I have yet to figure out how to convert it over to a mp3 format.

All was not lost as the session did produce one new one as I heard several
clear IDs for KKAQ Thief River Falls, MN. This was at 06:00 and again at
07:00MST.

Re: [IRCA] Help needed with an unid

2008-12-22 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Thanks Mike for the suggestion. I checked it out and it lists 3 stations on
1460, and 2 of these are in the eastern time zone, WZNZ Jacksonville FL and
WHIC Rochester NY. I also listened to my recording maybe 6 times again and I
cannot get either of those 2 call signs or cities out of it. So I still
dunno what I was listening to.

Re: [IRCA] Slider Loopstick Cancels Out Image Reception

2008-12-08 Thread Mike Stonebridge

Gary:

Colin, KONP-1450 in Port Angeles must have a fantastic salt-water
transmitting site,
KONP gets out very well. Up here in northern Alberta it's almost a pest as
it is in most nights. During 12 hour timer session on 1450 timer it's not
unusual to hear 6 ID's from it.
