It saves you from trying to press 3 keys at once, lol.
Just press the insert key, and let go, and then press the other keys.
I love it, smiles.

Patti, I will definitely check this out. I had no idea this option was
there.

Thanks!

Hi,
Do you have the insert key mode checked?
If not here is how you get to it.
1, Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways.
A, Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard.
B, Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2,
2, press, control, shift , + D, to open the Settings Center Default All
Applications.
3, Arrow down to, Users, right arrow to open.
4, Arrow down to, Insert Key Mode, press space bar to check this box.
Here's the explanation of this option:
When selected, the INSERT key functions as a sticky key. Any key pressed
immediately after pressing the INSERT key is treated as if it were pressed
in combination with the INSERT key. This check box is cleared by default.
5, tab to ok, press the space bar
Patti

I cross my left hand over my right to press insert leaving my right hand on
the home row to press the J. The one that I find difficult on my current
laptop is Insert+Function+semicolon to route the JAWS cursor to the PC
cursor. The Insert key and the semicolon are on the same side of the
keyboard. The Function key and Insert key are in opposite corners of the
keyboard.

Hi, Loy. It's completely up to you, but you might want to explain why you
find the insert key hard to use in some combinations. Armed with that
information, people who use the caps lock instead of insert could give you
an idea of whether you might face similar problems with that key.

Hi.

Dell inspiron 1100 notebook appears to be one that had a 32 bit
processor. Are you running the 32 bit JAWS installer? If so, then it
would be a bug where the 32 bit installer is mistakenly trying to
install a 64 bit component. It installed successfully under the 32 bit
platform on my Elbraille, though so if it's a bug it's not affecting all
of the 32 bit machines.

Try this.  In the pdf, hit control P.  A list of printers should come
up.  Click on the Freedom Printer and an Open Book file will open with
the pdf in it.  You can then save it to  various places including a Word
document if you wish.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and Open Book

2017-09-04 Thread Jim Pursley
Agree.  Open Book carries with it a handy "Freedom printer" which is
able to open a secure graphically sent pdf so that I might read it.
Nothing else works, not even JAWS OCR.  I suppose that I could print to
my HP printer, too, but I'd be using quite a bit of paper and would need
to physically  scan each page.  So, Open Book is my buddy.

to really do a number on scanning that document or book and making it
as good as possible. It's for more serious occasions where JAWS
acquire image OCR capability is for the casual user who wants to check

of an image then copy and paste it out of the results viewer into word

So said, right now it doesn't sound like VFO is interested in
discontinuing Open Book in favor of using that OCR which is included

If that is the case, does anyone know what OCR programs are being

Re: [JAWS-Users] opinion on using caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

When you change from the desktop to the laptop keyboard layout, there are
new key combinations used with the caps lock key . Also you must remember
that to turn caps lock on or off, you have to press the caps lock key twice.
However, when using the laptop keyboard layout, you are not locked into
using the caps lock key. In the laptop keyboard layout, holding down the
insert key while pressing other keys works the same as it did in the desktop
keyboard layout. So if there is a numpad on your keyboard, you can use the
insert key plus other keys without even knowing which keyboard is being
used, except for the difference using the caps lock key to turn caps lock
on or off.

Also when using the laptop keyboard layout, you can press and hold
control+shift+capslock and then j to open the JAWS window or menu if you
don't like the stretch of pressing insert and then j with one hand.

Miriam,

When you create a favorite, you're put in an edit field and can do whatever
you want with the assigned name. As far as I can tell, you can't edit a
favorite's name once you've saved it. So what you could do in this case is
delete the existing favorite whose name you want to change and create it all
over again. In fact, you don't even need to delete the existing name, but
you might get confused if you don't.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New JAWS user question about caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Valiant8086

Hi

If you use laptop layout, you can issue insert+j by pressing
ctrl+shift+caps lock+j. The ctrl+shift+caps lock emulates the insert
key, handy if you're using a laptop that has a retarded insert key
location or none at all. This is however not an alternative insert key
modifyer - it doesn't work with t for say window title, for instance..
It's specifically for insert+j where you don't have an insert key. This
is pretty  much the only key combination that requires the insert key
though, if you have laptop layout, and thus the biggest combination you
might need it for.

That said, I still use insert when I want to press j even though I use
laptop layout. This is because with laptop layout, caps lock j goes left
by word - caps lock j emulates the same thing that num pad0+num pad4
does with desktop layout (say prior word). I have the caps lock shift
ctrl j option but it's more natural for me to reach for insert with the
right hand, then hit j with the left pointer finger. Not a standard
acceptable contortion for touch typist such as myself, but it works.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opinion on useing caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Valiant8086

Hi.

This is my personal take on it, I tend to want to suggest that you try
to learn the laptop layout. If you become efficient with that, you'll be
able to use laptop layout even on desktop keyboards, so no matter which
actual style of keyboard you're at you can still use it comfortably. The
nice thing about the laptop layout is that for the majority of things
the desktop layout functionality with the num pad still works as it does
in desktop layout mode.

You ask about using the caps lock key as a JAWS key. When you switch to
laptop layout, it'll set this up automatically. If you continue using
desktop layout, you can set the caps lock as a JAWS key manually.

Ask us how to change keyboard layouts if you can't find it on your own.

Hi.

I take it that your laptops all have a num pad then? If not, then it's
actually a necessity to use laptop layout in order to be able to use all
of the functionality of JAWS unless you can use the emulated num pad
efficiently. Switching to the JAWS cursor for instance, or the touch cursor.

Dell inspiron 1100 notebook appears to be one that had a 32 bit

would be a bug where the 32 bit installer is mistakenly trying to

create a jaws folder on the desktop. then when a new version is installed you

Hi.

As Eric said, you can keep both without issue. What happens here is
that, when you upgrade to a new major version, in stead of doing an in
place upgrade, it makes a whole new folder and installs a separate copy
just of the new version. This allows you to, as you noticed, have
multiple copies of major versions. The advantage here is that issues
with one that make it difficult or impossible to do something you need,
if your other version or versions were ok with doing that, you should be
able to shut down the current version and manually run the other version
to have all of its capabilities and, in the case of falling back to 18
from 2018, be rid of any bugs that may have been introduced in the 2018
cycle and not yet fixed.

If you need to switch to the old version, here's the steps

1. Shut down the existing version of JAWS using insert+f4, then pressing
enter.

2. Hold your windows key, and press r then release both. This is the
shortcut for the run dialogue. It's an edit box where you can type the
path of a file you want to execute, it's handy in some situations, such
as this. Go ahead and hit windows+r while JAWS is still running if you
want to find out what the run dialogue looks like.

Tip: If you want to make sure you know how to type jaws18 etc, try it
with JAWS already running. If you specify 18 while running 2018
currently, it'll just open the jaws window or the jaws system tray menu
(if running from tray), even if you specify a different, but valid,
version than what is currently running.

3. After hitting Windows+r, wait for a few seconds to ensure it has
popped up then type one of the following in the run box

jaws17

jaws18

jaws2018

depending on which version of JAWS you want to start. If you hear a
sound, you either didn't get focused in the right place or you typed it
wrong. If you end up stuck with no screen reader, press
ctrl+windows+enter to start narator. If you're on an older version of
windows you might need to just use windows+enter or windows+u, if you
use windows+u you'll need to tab around to the read text on screen aloud
using narator and press space to check it in order to actually start
narator. Once Narator is running you can start JAWS using the JAWS
shortcuts on your desktop - should have one for every version of JAWS
that is installed.

Lastly, if, when, you do uninstall versions of JAWS you no longer need,
select the freedom scientific jaws (version number) in the manage apps
screen, or programs and features. Making sure it is a JAWS you're
uninstalling not one of the other freedom scientific products like
synthesizer or talking install, etc. During the uninstallation you'll be
asked do you want to remove shared components. Choose no, don't remove
shared components. This is the answer to your question about how to
uninstall one without uninstalling parts of both of them.

Until jaws 2018 is released and is stable to your satisfaction, I highly
recommend keeping your JAWS 18, and, for the record, I personally do
keepone previous version installed than that which is the latest I have
installed. This is in case I find a bug even in the release version that
works ok in the previous version, or if I change a setting or break the
latest one and I can just switch to another version quickly and decide
to beat on the new, broken, version to try and fix it later on when I'm
done with what ever it is I'm doing.

Good luck with your shiny new Shark!

Re: [JAWS-Users] accessible youtube to mp3 converter

2017-09-04 Thread Valiant8086

Hi.

Another one I discovered recently, ponts media downloader (google it).
It's a little buggy, for instance if you want to download a playlist
from youtube, put the link to the youtube playlist in the edit box, then
uncheck the checkbox that says something about avoid downloading
playlist, set that to avoid downloading playlists. It'll then happily
download the playlist, lol. If you set it the other way, it crashes.
It's not quite as fast as some of the other downloaders, like the
command line and very complicated youtube_dl utility, but it gets the
job done handily. This is an application you install and not a website
that converts it for you. This application is especially handy if you do
want to download and or convert all of someone's content in one easy shot.

Btw, the edit box changes itself to display what's on your clipboard, if
a link every time you focus it, so if you type a path in there but you
have a different path on your clipboard, every time you tab to and put
focus back on the edit box it'll be replaced with that which is on your
clipboard, something to keep in mind.

Re: [JAWS-Users] A possible bit of a problem

2017-09-04 Thread Valiant8086

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 and Open Book

2017-09-04 Thread Valiant8086

Hi.

According to Erik on the latest episode of the FSCast podcast, Open book
is still relevant. It gives you the 3 OCR engines in one package for
better accuracy, an easy to use self voiced interface, ability to edit
recognized content and a whole host of extra goodies enabling you to
really do a number on scanning that document or book and making it as
good as possible. It's for more serious occasions where JAWS acquire
image OCR capability is for the casual user who wants to check mail or
quickly read a book etc. You could of course acquire the text of an
image then copy and paste it out of the results viewer into word pad or
something similar and there's your editing capability. HJ Pad for that
matter.

So said, right now it doesn't sound like VFO is interested in
discontinuing Open Book in favor of using that OCR which is included in
JAWS.

feature set would seem to indicate a lack of interest in maintaining Open Book
as a separate product line.

If that is the case, does anyone know what OCR programs are being used in JAWS 2018 to
perform the recognition and will there be ways to "tweek" the performance as
there is in Open Book?

It's an interesting release and future developments will be interesting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New JAWS user question about caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Adrian Spratt
Actually, that is the only standard JAWS command using insert that gives me a
problem. I have no idea why FS/VFO made that the key combo to open the JAWS
menus. Yes, of course, j could stand for JAWS, but it's a combo that requires
taking the left hand out of position to press the j. If this is your only
problem using the insert key, I'd reconsider whether you need to switch to caps
lock. Then again, since you're a new JAWS user, perhaps you haven't had all the
commonly used keystrokes ingrained yet.

Hi, Loy. It's completely up to you, but you might want to explain why you
find the insert key hard to use in some combinations. Armed with that
information, people who use the caps lock instead of insert could give you an
idea of whether you might face similar problems with that key.

I am the oposite; perhaps because I am a lawyer and also like writting, I
find more convenient to enter numbers and JAWS keystrokes using the
extended keypad, avoiding to frequently move a hand to the right when I'm
writting. Fortunately I am used to it since I started to use computers on
2002, because when I recently went to university with a netbook could be
hard to share a table if I had a full-keyboard laptop or an external one
connected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New JAWS user question about caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Fernando Gregoire
With the JAWS default setting, there's no need to go to the numpad to use
INSERT as the JAWS key. I always use extended insert, except for a few
spelling commands which use the 5 on the numpad, which is different from
INSERT+5 of the extended keyboard to say colors.
In most keyboards, extended insert is just up to the DELETE key; in newer
ones I saw it just right to the right CTRL key, but it's less common.

No. I'm used to using the insert key and don't actually remember most of the
caps-lock keystrokes. It's designed for laptop users but can be used easily
on a desktop keyboard instead if that's what you want. In fact, Freedom

You could go in to the favorites folder directly in windows explorer and
edit the name in there. Also although it has been a while if memory serves
you can alphabetize your favorites in IE by hitting the applications key in
the list of favorites and choose sort or whatever it is called. Like I said

I would use the Desktop layout in all computers, but often laptops have no
numeric keypad and, since this is emulated with function keys, activating
and routing cursors is a challenge without the Laptop layout. There are
laptop models with numeric keypad, but thei're not convenient to carry out
because the numpad enlarges the machine a lot.

Re: [JAWS-Users] opinion on useing caps lock as JAWS key

2017-09-04 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi,

You can use the Laptop keyboard layout which has capslock as the JAWS Key
by default, or change the setting of the Desktop layout to use capslock
instead of insert.
Keystroke disposition in Laptop layout is easier to handle with no need to
move hands and is especially useful when you haven't numeric keypad, a so
common case in laptops where the numpad is emulated by using function keys.
However, since the laptop layout has duplicate commands and for some less
frequent commands it uses the INSERT KEY (for example, the left mouse click
is simulated with CAPSLOCK+8, but the Keyboard Manager is launched with
INSERT+8), you have to read the help to learn some additional commands
compared to the Desktop layout.
By the way, if you are a new user, I would recommend you to change the JAWS
Key of the Desktop layout instead to switching to the Laptop one. To do
this, open Settings Center with INSERT+6, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the
Default file, tab to the tree view and, in the Keyboard branch, fin and
change the option of the JAWS key.
If you can't press INSERT+6 to open Settings Center, go to the JAWS window
with ALT+TAB, press ALT+U for the Utilities menu and E for Settings Center;
if you configured JAWS to run from system tray instead of as a window,
press WINDOWS+B to go to the system tray, fin the JAWS for Windows icon and
press APPLICATIONS key to open the context menu.

Hope it helps!

Just go to the control panel or “Apps & Features” and uninstall the FSOCR64
