[JAWS-Users] Fw: Introducing Free Kindle Software with Accessibility Features

2011-01-19 Thread Dale Leavens
Here is a new and presumably Jaws accessible application.

I would prefer a fully portable e-book reading device such as my sighted
colleagues have available to them and will probably so inform them, I don't
much fancy sitting at a computer for my recreational reading but there may be
many on this list who will find this of interest and value.

Dear blind-inter...@amazon.com subscriber,

Amazon.com is releasing a new version of Kindle for PC that adds accessibility
features designed for blind and low-vision customers.

Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plugin is a free, downloadable application for
your Windows PC. It provides the following accessibility features:
text-to-speech reading with adjustable voice settings, voice-guided menu
navigation, large font sizes, high contrast reading mode, keyboard navigation,
and accessible shortcuts.

With this software, for the first time ever, the entire collection of English
language books in the Kindle Store can be read aloud. With over 750,000 English
language titles, Amazon offers the largest selection of accessible ebooks. In
order to use the text-to-speech feature, an external screen reader program must
be installed and running on the Windows PC.

The free download is available at www.amazon.com/kindle/accessibility.

We welcome your feedback at kindle-pc-accessibility-feedb...@amazon.com.

2011-01-19 Thread Dale Leavens

Dear Victoria,

I am sorry, I am not familiar with Windows 7. Neither am I all that familiar
with adjusting Internet Explorer.

As I remember you can use the Jaws cursor when you hear the pop-up sound and
move with it to near the top of the screen where there is a place to right
click and allow the pop-up and the download however you would be better to
go through the Security settings of Internet Explorer I think it is near or
at the bottom of the tools Menu. I can't tell you exactly under which tab
but it is in the security settings. Enable pop-ups there before you go to
the Site to download the application.

You might put this out to the general list, I am pretty sure someone will be
used to this sort of problem and be able to give more precise instructions.

Hi Dale, Thank you very much for this notification! I had no idea that
this accessible Kindle software exited.

May be you could help me? When I tried to download it, it was blocked by
my Pop Up blocker.

Do you know how to tell the Windows XP3 Internet Explorer 7, to allow a
download that has been blocked?

Is there any keyboard command we can use, as soon as we hear the Block
sound, to continue the download?

Many thanks! Vicky

Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: Introducing Free KindleSoftwarewithAccessibility Features

2011-01-19 Thread Dale Leavens

Here in lies the problem though.

Not all electronic books are created equal in the site of the cyber gods.

Kindle is a format not necessarily the same as other e-book formats.

It is the old Betamax/VHS wars all over again.

Same with Audio books. I am discovering that not all of our MP3 reading
solutions, Victor Stream, Plextalk, Olympus DM4 so far tested give good
access to all of the audio books they all claim to support.

I expect the same is true with e-book readers.

Is Epub the same format as Kindle? Are all titles available to ePub
equivalent to those available to Kindle?

Will we, the consumer ever actually get what we want or will we continue to
accept and actually purchase what they, the providers insist we should have?

And when will we, the blind, have access to the promise of universal
accessibility that the printing press now four or more centuries ago gave
seeing people who only needed to take the initiative to learn to read.

The universality of binary 1s and 0s is being very deliberately subverted
with the specific intent to limit who has access to written material. This
is not the coincidental barriers of things like Adobe PDF but a deliberate
restriction.

Kindle will certainly hear from me on the subject but it is a message which
requires far broader broadcast.

This goes around and around and around. Tape was thought to kill the music
industry then the cassette then the Internet. Video home equipment was going
to kill the cinema and so Internet sharing and pirating while the movies
make more money than ever before.

There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is
Accessible with Jaws. I use it all the time to read ePub formatted e-books.
I believe too that this works on the mobile browser application as well. So
in theory, you could use it to read books on your mobile device. I haven't
played with the mobile side of things, but you could always give it a shot.
Also, all the Apple I-devices can read e-books with VoiceOver if you want to
go that root.

Please, don't assume it works by our design. We have a different view on an
application being accessible. The Kindle PC application (menu and dialogs)
is accessible with the Screen Reader, the books themselves however, are not.
The books (those which the publishers have allowed), are read using Text To
Speech provided by Kindle. In the case of other books, the application is
still accessible (menu and dialogs), but the books are not at all.

The quality of this speech from the Text To Speech they provide and the lack
of control leaves much to be desired. We have expressed to Amazon and
Kindle, that screen reader users would like to use their screen reader for
speech, Braille, and control of navigation. This current solution, while a
commendable effort, is very misleading to say the least. For those of you
try it out, I encourage users to try it and then point out your opinions to
them directly.

Regards,
Eric

I don't have any idea what that is unless it is a trap to catch those bad

I have ALT-TABBED in and out because I have been switching between Jaws

David,
while this is an option in the settings for Jaws 7 and 9 and probably
elsewhere it is not a selection in Jaws 11.

Anyway, it isn't the fact that the message isn't immediately read when
open, the body of the message just isn't there, it is invisible to the
pc cursor in Jaws 11 when the message is open.

Bits of it can be read with the Jaws cursor and if one is patient enough
to use paging keys and return to the Jaws cursor the message can be read
using the Jaws cursor but it is invisible to the PC cursor. Arrow keys
don't read, Jaws key and arrow doesn't read line, the text is simply
invisible to Jaws with the PC cursor.

I have sent an e-mail to Freedom Scientific Customer Service this
morning but so far nothing but an automated response, I expect they will
send something later.

hello there;

give this a try;

1, in OE,

insert+v for adjust jaws options,

2, press the letter m until you hear;
messages automatically read on.

you should press the letter m twice to hear this.

if it's off, spacebar to turn on.

What do you hear when you press insert-q from an open message? Your email

I wonder if you need to associate the OE scriptw files with that program?

Hello there David,

Are you very certain you are running Jaws 11? While I see that option in

Anyway, it isn't the fact that Jaws doesn't begin reading the message
immediately it is open, Jaws just doesn't see the body of the message at
all. It can't be an Outlook Express setting because the same setting
applies with Jaws 7 and Jaws 11 open on that machine.

[JAWS-Users] Now resolved [WAS] Re: Help! Jaws won't read e-mail messages.

2011-01-13 Thread Dale Leavens

Thanks to those who have been trying to help me with this issue.

It is now resolved. I'll tell you how and what happened though I still don't
understand quite why.

I went to the Jaws menu and the check for updates. I had thought I had
installed both of the available updates after the CD installation but one
either failed or in some way didn't install, anyway, one showed as available
so I checked it and had it install.

Once the computer rebooted and I reloaded Outlook Express the edit window
became responsive.

Another interesting thing is that the Open message option appeared in the
Jaws+V verbosity menu.

I went through all the menu options but as far as memory serves this is the
only item that was missing.

In the end though that was not the issue, it was unchecked and of course the
messages weren't being read automatically when open and Jaws did remind me
to use the reading keys to read the message when it was open but the reading
keys did now read the text in the body of the message. When I checked read
message it does that now too.

Now if I can figure out why I can't print to my network printer and embosser
as God intended I will be a more content camper.

That stop words exceptions dictionary is for JAWS when doing counts of

[JAWS-Users] Outlook Distress isn't talking in composing message body, HELP!

2011-01-08 Thread Dale Leavens
In the process of revitalizing Janet's computer I installed JAWS version 11
along with the update. This is an Acer running XP Home.

The hard drive was replaced and the contents of the old one dumped onto the new
one.

Most things seem to be as they were however when composing a message the edit
screen doesn't talk. You hear typing but looking back indicates an empty
screen. The Subject line is there and talks.

Reverting to Jaws 7 and it all talks fine. JAWS+Q tells me it has loaded the
correct configuration.

In the options menu of Outlook Distress I selected Aerial 12 point just because
that is what I usually select but when I ask for the font (JAWS+F) it announces
Times New Roman.

Seems to me I have seen similar issues reported here in the past, anyway can
anyone tell me how to see what is or at least should be in the edit pane while
composing a message?

Thanks for any assistance with this matter.

Yes, this is true and if you are shipping FedEx the email track address

I often use FedEx and one of the things I don't like about these email

You can also usually paste a UPS or FedEx tracking # into the search box

A possibly more durable solution, then, wouldn't you think, would be for FS

I notice that quite a few people write the list about Research It not
working from time to time.
The most likely cause for this, is that website information used in
Research It has changed.
Jaws relies on specific information from each site to be available, and
when the website in question changes that information,

the Research It utility fails to work correctly.
This is why FS will have to continually update Jaws in order for Research
It to work.
Whenever you have a problem retrieving information using this utility,
and you will , simply contact FS to make them aware of the problem.
I'm not bashing FS, I'm just pointing out why folks that use Research It
experience these problems.
Personally, I prefer using Internet Explorer since the same information
can be obtained from the individual sites that Research It accesses.
So, if Research It fails to get the information you are looking for, try
going to the corresponding website and getting it.

HTH,
Rick Justice

[JAWS-Users] Jaws friendly fax applications?

2011-01-06 Thread Dale Leavens
Looking for a Jaws friendly fax application, something which will convert a
document into an image then send it off preferably with a cover page.

I don't prefer an on-line solution at this time, one that runs on my computer
and sends directly over the phone.

I was looking at the Windows fax programme but it seems to want a scanned image.

If I am mistaken and someone knows how to use the Windows programme I would be
delighted to hear from them.

I don't care about receiving faxes, just sending them. I do have K1000 version
11 but that fax application doesn't seem to want to work here.

Thanks.

Why not just add the link to your favorites list? Press ALT-A when on the
link then enter and it is saved. You can also set up folders within your
favorites to classify and/or organize your favorites to make it quicker and
easier to find them. You could have a folder called say Technology and put
the link in there. Internet Explorer will take you right to it each time.

I even have a shortcut to my Favorites, ALT+CTRL+F (for favorites in case I
can't remember)

Hope this helps and you can again begin using your computer on the Web
without waiting for your screen reader to be updated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] iPod Touch; Can I enable voiceover from iTunes?

2010-12-28 Thread Dale Leavens
It started as a question about iTunes and Jaws and options which were
apparently not there but turned out not to be there because iTunes
recognized the equipment did not support those options. I initiated the
thread full in the knowledge that Jaws is not the screen reader of choice
for accessing that application but without an alternative method of access
and fully cognitive of the sensitivity of the moderators to any suggestion
that Jaws may be wanting in any aspect of performance. Many of us have
invested thousands of dollars in Jaws versions over the years and appreciate
the technical support of other Jaws users provided by such a list which in
this case included a link to a podcast, the first part of which was very
helpful in orienting me to the use of Jaws with iTunes, a resource I would
otherwise been unaware of.

I regret drawing the scrutiny of the moderators to any of those who were so
helpful to me in achieving my goals around the use of Jaws and iTunes and
the subsequent information about those devices appropriate to it's use.

Please accept my responsibility for the transgression and the offense to the
List's sensibilities. I probably should have known better.

You can only enable voice over on the 4th gen iPod Touches. The third
genn you have to down load it to the iPod and then enable it.
A look at the apple page can give you more info on the iPod you have at
hand, because each one and size is limited in voice over features.

Re: [JAWS-Users] iPod Touch; Can I enable voiceover from iTunes?

2010-12-28 Thread Dale Leavens
Actually, once I understood some of the access issues even Jaws 9 doesn't do
badly. Something has the bad habit of forcing focus to a list of songs from
somewhere and keeping focus on sources requires patience and tenacity but it
is manageable once you understand what it is supposed to do. Getting it to
do it is a bit challenging. I didn't try the Apple shop though.

In fairness, iTunes isn't all that nice to sighted people either. My son has
had a Shuffle for probably 5 years now and didn't realize that it is
possible to set iTunes not to launch every time he plugs into his Mac to
charge the player. Mind you, his version of iTunes is quite a bit older and
may not have that facility.

Off topic, I have given him the iTouch, lack of Voiceover capability doesn't
hinder him any.

Thank you Adi,

Maybe this iPod Touch is too old or something. It appears to be a 16 GIG. I
don't seem to have the option you told me about,

Then, press the tab key until you here configure universal access button

it just isn't there.

The other peculiar thing is that it shows software version 2.2.1 and even
after looking for update I get the message that this is the latest update. I
don't see any reference to the operating system version unless the software
version is the operating system version and maybe this unit doesn't support
IOS 4. Is that likely?

Thanks, I did find everything else as you said I would. although landing on
some of the iTunes functions can be problematic.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws iTunes

2010-12-26 Thread Dale Leavens
Although I can't find my Jaws 10 and 11 CDs so am using 9 which also does
not play well with iTunes, and so can't help you, I can share your
frustration!
Wouldn't you think sometime between about Jaws 7 and now someone would have
made iTunes accessible and easy to use? Either Apple maybe with an alternate
logically organized and simplified site or maybe Freedom Scientific working
with the current site?

We have a simplified already accessible search engine like google by means
of the Research feature which is already about as accessible as a Web site
can be but are left unable to use something like iTunes, something one might
expect a lot of blind people with a full spectrum of computer skills to want
to access.

Can they be collaborating with Apple to drive us from Microsoft and Windows
or maybe to change over to another screen reader? Surely not!

What ever the business strategy might be isn't obvious to me at least but I
think I am beginning to get some sense of it.

If you do find an answer please share it with the rest of us.

2010-12-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Turning the list off has generated a way more inane rubbish than we ever got
from people complaining about Jaws. This is so often true and a lesson so
slowly learned on list after list!

now really what would be the point in turning off the list? There are at
least two other Jaws lists out there, traffic would soon move and it would
start all over again.

There can be little doubt for some need for list moderation there always is
but never forget fellow listers that moderator is based on the root word
moderate.

With nothing to moderate Dave couldn't be moderator now could he?

He did the unavoidable and turned the list back on as he must have done and
we are all duly grateful.

Can we please get back onto the regularly scheduled programme!

There are often special buttons on laptops to increase or decrease the

Otherwise there are some programmes you can load for the purpose or you do

Re: [JAWS-Users] volume hotkeys?

2010-12-19 Thread Dale Leavens
I doubt it, I believe that programme only searches for software hot keys,
the sort that creating shortcuts for launching programmes creates. If there
are built-in shortcut keys they will be in the computer manuals or some of
the help screens. If you have someone who can see they may find some
combinations of keys denoted by pictures of speakers with arrows up and
down. There are probably others with antenna icons on them for turning on
the WiFi radio and things like that, maybe spy glass icons for screen
magnification, all kinds of stuff.

I used to have a programme which allowed one to set up keys for volume up
and down over 10 years ago, I expect it is still out there somewhere but I'd
bet there is something on your computer to allow this.

There are often special buttons on laptops to increase or decrease the
volume. These are usually located above the keyboard if you have them.

Otherwise there are some programmes you can load for the purpose or you
do so with controls in your system tray.

Deana,

there may be a combination for muting the sound too. If Jaws suddenly quits
along with Windows sounds and other things you have found it. Maybe FN-12 or
FN-9. Usually it is a toggle but it might also return with Volume Up.

Don't know if the mute stays in effect if you turn off and back on again.

Just be aware it may be an option on your computer.

One other way to help increase your battery life, that works for blinks,
is that we can set the screen brightness to it's lowest setting. At
least, on my laptop, there is a hot key to change the brightness, so if I
need a sighted person to take a look, I can just bump the brightness back

Usually the help key is the far left key on IBM/Lenovo notebooks. It is used
with certain of the function and other keys to operate hardware functions
such as turning off the screen, operating the WiFi and ?Bluetooth radios and
the Infra red transmitter/receiver and magnifier, things like that.
immediately to it's right is usually the Control key then on the two
computers I have owned is the Windows key and the Alt Key. then the Space
Bar then Alt, the Applications Key and another control key. To the right of
all that is a 6 pack, the inverted 'T' arrow keys and to the left of the Up
Arrow key is a key which goes back a page in Internet Exploder and Windows
Exploder and on the right a key which goes forward.

Hope this helps.

Hello Dan,

While I haven't done this in a very long time, you are correct about using

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Silencing part of the screen.

This is pretty obscure, so not sure anyone will have a suggestion, but
here goes.

Firstly, this issue is occurring essentially in a terminal window, IE,
when I am running in Cygwin, a linux-like command-line interface on a
Windows box.

On all of my machines, except for my newest 64 bit Windows 7 box, I have
no problem. When I am using my email client, Pine, it shows the first
screen of information, when you hit the space bar, it shows the next
screen full of text. The top line of the screen stays mostly the same,
showing the Pine version, message number, and a couple of other things, it
also shows the percentage of the email that has been displayed so far. The
bottom couple of lines of the screen is a command menu of sorts.

In all of my boxes, except for the Windows 7 box, when I hit the space
bar, JAWS just reads whatever changed on the screen. So, it doesn't
reread the top line of the screen, except for the percentage which
changes. And, it doesn't read the bottom two lines of the screen.
On my windows 7 box, when I hit the space bar, it rereads the entire first
line of the screen. This is rather annoying.

I am not sure why the difference, since I am running the same version of
JAWS on all the boxes.

I have never messed around with JAWS frames, but am wondering, can I set
up a frame that encompasses most of the first line of the screen and then
sets it to silent mode or something like that. This is definitely
reminiscent of VocalEyes back in the day.

Any suggestions on how to go about this?

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] burned an audio cd

2010-11-06 Thread Dale Leavens
Apparently WinAmp will burn CDs too. I don't know if you need the paid
version or not and of course with WinAmps lack of menus I never know what I
am doing with it beyond playing Audio. Someone though knows how to use it,
it appears to be a popular programme among the blind.

Does anyone have a list of keystrokes for WinAmp?

Thanks.

Well after about 6 hours fighting with windows media player I looked at
the programs page. There is a simple to use mp3 cd doctor lite program. It
took less than 30 minutes to locate, download, install and make the audio
cd. The only major difference with the resulting cd is that it does not
have a label and the track names are lost.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Sudden Loss of authorizations

2010-11-03 Thread Dale Leavens

Ah well Robin,

If the experts of Tech Support can't resolve it I guess I wouldn't know.

Since my first version, Jaws 2.2 I have noticed varying levels of stability
over the years. My sense is that version 3.7U was the most responsive and
most stable but in fairness Jaws is becoming a very large and complex
programme, perhaps too large and complex for the sort of reliability needed
for high and dependable productivity.

I know that if the sighted people I have worked along side of for decades
now were forced to reboot their computers when accessing many Web sites or
had their screens inexplicably drop into 40 minute demo mode computers would
not be ubiquitous in business or health care and nobody would depend on one
to fly an airplane.

When the power came back on and I reverted out of battery stretch mode Jaws
no longer seemed to mind being on my computer.

Hi Dale, this is interesting. I have no answers for you or clues as to
what occurred. I can tell you that I use the dongle with the
authorization key on it. Over the last six weeks or so I have had four
dongles suddenly lose their authorization update information. For
example I had updated the dongles to Jaws 11 from JAWS 9. Suddenly and
without any reason that I can re-produce the dongles were reset back to
JAWS 9 and this was discovered by going into the dongle viewer under
tools in the jJAWS submenu. I had updated to JAWS 11 cconifirmed this
with the dongle viewer and days later I was suddenly into forty minute
mode. After checking the dongle viewer I discovered the dongle reverted
back to JAWS 9. This has occurred using a PC (XP) as well as using a
laptop. The laptop was weird in that if I used the docking station I had
full access JAWS 11. If I took the laptop off the docking station I had
only forty minute mode and the dongle was not recognized. I
unfortunately did not at that time check the authorization of the dongle
via the dongle viewer while the laptop was in the docking station or
when it was out of the docking station. The I did contact FS and we went
through a few hours of tech support and we did check the dogle at that
time and it did state JAWS 11 while in both states. The end result was
it could not be figured out so I had the laptop re-built and
re-installed JAWS 9. So all of this to let you know that weird things
are happening with the Aughorization of JAWS and no one can seem to
re-produce the problems or fix the problems if they have occurred.
Yesterday I had a dongle that was updated to JAWS 11 last week and this
week I had to update it to JAWS 11 as it some how lost its update
information.

Weird or what!!

Re: [JAWS-Users] remote desktop

2010-10-17 Thread Dale Leavens
The problem for Jaws is that when a screen is sent from the server it is
nothing but an image. A picture of what the screen should look like.

Jaws does not parse an image of the screen for its information, it
identifies the controls information to determine what is there and what the
text is.

The server would need to have a version of jaws on it which the remote
computer interacts with.

Similarly, the server registers keystrokes and mouse movements to determine
how the remote computer is interacting with the application on the server.
Without JAWS on the server it has no use for the JAWS keystrokes we use to
navigate and read and therefore can't know what you are doing to it.

2010-10-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Sorry, I wasn't paying enough attention to the beginning of this thread and
don't know or remember exactly what it is you need to do.

Some server applications like Network Outlook don't need a server side JAWS
but if the application is running on the machine and assuming it isn't a
thin client application like Cytrix ...

You need a special network access version of jaws on the server and I think
on the remote computer. I looked into this several years ago and forget some
of the details. Check with Freedom Scientific, they are on the Web.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Why not go to Premier Assistive Technology and purchase the Talking
Checkbook. Then you can purchase a box of checks from checks in the
mail.

Tell the person that you want your name printed on the check (of course
after you write a check to someone you still have to sign it), your
account

number, and checks in the mail will put the bank name on your checks once
you specify how many checks you want and what number it should start from.
The checks are laser checks. I think you'll like the TCB you can type in
who it's going to, the date, amount, memo, notes, it even gives an extra
field if you want to add more notes, then you can print by hitting either
enter or the spacebar, then you can push the spacebar to check the check
once it has cleared your account. If you have more questions feel free to
write off list.

I too use the duplicate cheques but I don't write them. There aren't many
businesses who take cheques any more of course but on-line banking which I
also use does not cover every situation.

I have accounts at a few businesses around town and I like to pay them by
cheque rather than charge card or debit card. they offer me account services
and they send me a bill. I don't see any reason why they should have to pay
the banks for offering me that convenience. I would like it if they would
offer me a discount for their saving but I consider it part of the cost of
convenience.

I have been able to occasionally pay by cheque rather than credit card for
the bank discount in some situations, particularly large purchases. The
vendor can give me 4 or 5% discount and there is also some tax saving to me
without costing the vendor anything, it is just money he doesn't pay the
card people. Not all merchants will do that. I saved a couple of hundred
bucks on a bed a few years ago, enough to hang new curtains and a spread
with some change.

Don't think either of my banks offer raised line cheques.

Hi Dale,
It's not my preference, but I do have raised line checks and can write a
check if needed. I bought the kind of checks that have a carbon behind
them so if a friend or someone writes a check for me I have a copy of it.
I have been using online banking until recently when they changed the site
and I just don't get it anymore. I am working with FS and the bank to make
it work for me. I like the online banking because I have it set so that
anytime any activity occurs on my account, I receive an email.

Some banks try to charge more for the raised line checks, but the law says
that they have to charge you the price of the most popular check they
issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Burn CD with Media Player

2010-10-10 Thread Dale Leavens

Hello Ann Marie et al,

I have been struggling with CD creation for a long time now.

What in the name of all is the difference between burning and ripping?

Which ever choice I make the CD is ejected on apparent completion but it
still won't play on anything and when I look again in the computer there
seems only to be two files regardless of how many I select.

Now I have not yet tried your method of drag--drop but instead have tried
copy--paste which method only seems to yield two files.

Thanks and thanks for your directions, I'll try them soon.

Dale Leavens.

Below are my directions; if incorrect please let me know. It took me some
time to figure how to copy songs from an audio CD, rip and then burn. I
hope this helps someone.

Player, Windows XP, Jaws 11.
Go to desktop, type w for windows media player and enter
or
go to Start menu, then programs, type w for windows Media Player and enter
Because Window Media Player (WMP) opens to wherever you left off from last
time you opened,

tab to Windows Media Player button as our start entry point.
On buttons press space bar twice to get context windows with a list of
options.

Go to each button to check out settings.
tab to rip button, press space bar twice, down arrow to eject after
ripping and enter to check that CD

will eject when complete.
press escape
tab to burn button and space bar twice and enter on eject after burning
press escape
Now you will know when ripping and burning is completed because each time
CD should eject

insert audio CD
Song will begin press control+s to stop playing
tab to the rip button, press space bar twice, down arrow to rip record
title D: and enter

Ripping begins
Alternatively you can press enter on start rip button or press alt+s key
Rip begins, Takes time to rip songs give it about 10 minutes
CD ejects
tab to burn button press space bar twice
Remove disk and enter a blank CD
tab to library tree view which is closed, right arrow to open
down arrow to select by artist
Tab to list view of artist
down arrow to select the band you wish to rip
Alternatively you could have selected just added, by song, year...
After selecting band use the Jaws drag and drop key control+insert+num pad
slash
tab twice to basket list
Use Jaws drag and drop key control+insert+num pad slash to drop songs in
basket window
control + a to highlight all songs in basket
tab to start burn button and enter
burning begins and CD ejects when completed
Jaws states Windows Media Player close button press space bar to close
Done

2010-09-08 Thread Dale Leavens

Thanks Lennie,

Trouble with cookies is most of the time I haven't got the foggiest idea
what they are. The names often don't tell me anything. I may however just
leave the cookies behind.

Just for the information of the list, I purchased and downloaded a programme
called RegCure. It claims to repair registry inaccuracies, pointers to .dll
files which are incorrect and numerous other things. This computer isn't
always behaving well and I thought to try fixing it up, the programme is
highly rated. Unfortunately there is no way to get the authorization key
into it. The customer service admitted the programme is inaccessible but did
offer a remote session for fifty bucks to do it for me.

Hi Dale,

There is a way to save cookies that you don't want CCleaner to remove. I
hope that the following steps is easy to follow:

1. Start CCleaner
2. Press the Analyze button
Note: You might not have to run the analysis to get to the list of cookies
3. after the analysis is complete, Tab until you find the option button
and press enter

4. tab until you find cookies and press enter
5. With the Jaws cursor, arrow down until you find a cookie and then root
PC cursor to Jaws cursor

6. Arrow through the list until you find the cookie that you want to keep
7. Press the application key and press enter on keep
8. Repeat for any other cookies that you want to keep
9. Tab to the list of excluded cookies and you should read the cookies
that will not be removed.

If you kept the wrong cookie, while in the excluded cookies list, press the
application key and arrow down to remove and press enter

I sure hope that these steps are correct and will work for you.

Hope this helps. Take care,

Lennie

Hello Francis,

I have pasted a link below, which should give you the latest version of
CCleaner. There is a check for updates button in the CCleaner
interface

However,

you might find it easier when checking to go to www.filehippo.com and
download the latest version of the program. When on the File Hippo page
there will be a link to CCleaner. It is usually under the popular
downloads heading. Follow that link and on the subsequent page there
will

be a download latest version link that you can use. If the information
bar pops up use Alt+N to move focus to it and then use the application
key
to invoke a context menu. Use down arrow key to the download file

and press enter key. You can then choose to save the file by using the

Hello Kliph,

Have you installed version 2.32? The reason I am asking is that I had

version 2.29 and the item state was not being read to me. I started to

write a script but then I decided to download version 2.32 and the item

state is now being read by JAWS. If you use the JAWS cursor, the
graphic

793 by an item indicates that it is checked and 792 indicates that it is

not

checked. You can move to the graphics with the JAWS cursor and use the

graphics labeler. Label 793 as checked and 792 as unchecked. I
found

that using the invisible cursor with the up and down keys spoke the
state

after labeling, but of course, you would have to put PC cursor back on

Yes, for me it was JAWS 4.something. I moved over kicking and

2010-09-02 Thread Dale Leavens
Is this likely to be a JAWS issue or more likely a IE8 problem. I have been
assuming IE8 because of the messages I get from Windows.

In fact, although I do have SMAs to include Jaws 11, I only ever upgraded
from JAWS9 on my computer at work and now that I am retired no longer using
that machine. Apart from this IE problem I have been satisfied with 9 and
actually JAWS 7 seems to be doing just fine on the computer my wife uses. In
fact, if I need to do any serious shopping on Sites I know to crash I go to
that computer. It was a cheapy bought when one of mine suffered a hard disk
crash running XP Home and for what ever reasons, IE8 never found its way
onto that machine.

I am pretty sure it is an IE8/Vista problem and probably some corruption of
IE. It doesn't appear though in the Control panel so I don't know how to
remove it and go back.

If no one else is having this trouble then it has to be a local computer
issue doesn't?

If anyone else is having such issues I would be pleased to hear about it.

If it is still happening, it would be good if you could contact our

Hello all,
I've heard about this on another list so thought I would pass this on.
To make JAWS less chatty in Windows Explorer:
1. Open Windows Explorer. Then, press insert+6 to open Configuration
Manager. It should say, explorerframe.jcf - JAWS Configuration Manager.
This is fine as you should only do this for Windows Explorer.
2. Press alt+s to open the set options menu, then v to open the Verbosity
Options dialogue box.
3. Tab to the preferences button corresponding to your current verbosity
level and activate it.
4. Down arrow till you hear, control type checked. Press space and you
should hear, control type not checked.

5. Press enter to activate the ok button.
6. Back in the Verbosity Options dialogue box, tab to the ok button and
activate it.

7. Save your changes with ctrl+s.
8. Close Configuration Manager with alt+f4.
Hope this helps!

[JAWS-Users] Reply to message no longer working why?

2010-07-15 Thread Dale Leavens

Good evening,

Using Windows Vista and Windows mail.

For some reason the Reply option to messages has quit working. this is true
with the CTRL-R or when selecting message in the menu and arrowing down, the
Reply functions are listed as unavailable.

I have no idea what I might have done to disable this function. Is it another
of those Windows Features which randomly trigger to frustrate the user
experience further?

Any insight into this problem is appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws won't appear on system tray.

2010-07-02 Thread Dale Leavens
Did you uninstall version 10? If not there are probably two shortcuts on
your Desktop which you can get to with Windows+M and cycle through with
first key navigation (J).

The properties of each shortcut will show where they point. You can set up a
unique shortcut for each version, I have done this in the past when moving
up to newer versions of Jaws if for no other reason than to determine which
I prefer for which tasks. You may wish to uninstall 11 and then reinstall
it, perhaps something has gone wrong with that install.

They put up a way to change the background to what every you would like or
use 4 different ones of there choosing.
They really broke the google page and it made the news here of all of the
complaints about it to google. Google stated that they was going to put

[JAWS-Users] Internet Explorer keeps failing and shutting down, any ideas to help?

2010-05-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Page after page Internet Explorer fails. Often it is the error on Web page,
sometimes it seems to be nothing, sometimes it happens with a redirect to the
pay for pages of a shopping site.It is often difficult to know what is wrong
because jaws locks up. If left long enough Jaws may come back, I have though
left it over night and had to power down and restart to get it back, I don't
know what happens there. If I am really patient when Jaws goes quiet and
remember not to touch a navigation key it is more likely to come back and tell
me that things went south due to an error on the page.

I haven't updated from Jaws 9 on this machine running vista and IE 8. a bunch.
Jaws 7 on my wife's XP Home machine and IE 7 seems to handle the same pages
well.

I notice a load of private browsing and other features in this new Internet
Explorer I wonder if that is the issue. I went to the control panel to see if I
could uninstall IE 8, a method which used to return to an earlier version of IE
but that doesn't seem to be there under Vista.

Does anyone know if this is an Internet Explorer new feature, some odd
combination with Jaws, both, neither, some setting I haven't stumbled on or any
other idea how to improve this behaviour?

This just is not useful. One way or another I have purchased at least 5 full
Jaws packages over the past decade along with several SMAs, it is frustrating
not to have a seamless browsing experience.

Any information, advice or solution will be most appreciated.

Good morning,

I am using Jaws 9.021 something having not bothered to upgrade for various

Internet explorer 8. I try to keep up with all the updates. I am having
increasing trouble with Internet Explorer vomiting on Web pages. Message after
message about a problem with the Web page and offering to close the page. There
isn't really an alternative and sometimes I have to go to the Jaws cursor and
use the left mouse click to close the page after which I am informed that the
tab was recovered. Only occasionally is this successful though, more often we
repeat this error three times then IE closes down.

Generally speech is lost while IE is struggling so I can't tell what is going
on. Rebooting the computer doesn't seem to help.

Does anyone know what might be going on? It seems to be getting worse.

Dale,
When is the last time you formatted your hard drive and did
a fresh install of windows and all your programs? I know for
me when I start getting strange behavior like what you
describe and many other bothersome issues I just reinstall a
fresh image and go from there. If you use a program like
Image for windows this process may take 30-40 minutes

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Internet explorer failure help
needede.

Good morning,

I am using Jaws 9.021 something having not bothered to
upgrade for various reasons under Vista.

Internet explorer 8. I try to keep up with all the updates.
I am having increasing trouble with Internet Explorer
vomiting on Web pages. Message after message about a problem
with the Web page and offering to close the page. There
isn't really an alternative and sometimes I have to go to
the Jaws cursor and use the left mouse click to close the
page after which I am informed that the tab was recovered.
Only occasionally is this successful though, more often we
repeat this error three times then IE closes down.

Generally speech is lost while IE is struggling so I can't
tell what is going on. Rebooting the computer doesn't seem
to help.

Does anyone know what might be going on? It seems to be
getting worse.

Thanks for any assistance with this issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about upgrading IE and jaws.

2010-04-11 Thread Dale Leavens

Hi Mich,

I don't think that Web page not found issue is an IE problem. I seem to be
having a lot of that trouble here on a two year old Vista machine with Jaws
9 and IE but I don't seem to be having the same trouble with a much older XP
machine at work, mind you I don't do anything like as much browsing at work.
This seems to be recent, a couple of months recent and I am also finding
that Jaws seems to lock up and I have to just push the power button to kill
and restart the computer. This is almost exclusively while on the Web. I
also get a lot of those failure messages and when I close the tab IE reports
there was an error on the page and the tab is recovered. Sometimes this
recovery fails and we go around again maybe several times. I have an
impression it is something to do with how Java Script is being handled but I
don't really have much proof for it. Jaws may have something to do with it
too because sometimes I get an Unknown script to say line or next line or
what ever as I try to manipulate the arrow keys to figure out what might be
on the screen.

What I am saying is that the upgrades may be of value but they may not solve
those problems you are having.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Dale Leavens

Hi Hans,

I am using Jaws 9 on this computer but it doesn't work like that here for
me.

First letter navigation works but immediately I am thrown out of the box to
some other part of the page without the selection being read. For example I
wanted to select Toronto. Toledo was the first 'T', it was selected once I
turned Forms Mode off and relocated the box. Hit enter again to get back
into Forms Mode and hit 'T' again and off focus goes somewhere else. Turning
off forms Mode again and relocating the combo box confirmed that Toronto had
been selected. then down to the next box to select Buffalo Airport or at
least discover it it is an option. As it turns out it is an option but the
second one so again another round into and out of forms mode.

I do have Jaws 11 but have only installed it on my work computer. The joys
of Jaws 11 come with composing documents and spell checking MS-Word 2003.
Ultimately things just go silent, I cannot close jaws, cannot save my work
and close Word, mostly the keyboard stops working or if it doesn't the
computer stops talking so I can't tell what the keyboard response is. Only
resolution is to hit the power button. Since Jaws 11 comes up as the default
I often forget when working in Word to close it and load Jaws 9. Sometimes I
become aware that something isn't keeping up with me as I type, I get the
occasional beep from the computer as if I hit two keys simultaneously. When
this begins to happen it reminds me to save my work, kill Jaws and bring
back Jaws 9 and all goes well.

I am conflicted about replacing 9 with 11 on this machine not sure of the
advantages.

Thanks.

Dale

Hi Dale, and any one on list, that has trubble's with the combo boxes.

I have visited the webpage that you linked to, and have tryed out the
combo boxes there, and there are two different ways to work, whether you
are using Jaws 10 - 11, or earlyer version's.

Well, if someone have disabled the autoforms mode in Jaws 10 - 11, than it
work's just as in the earlyer version's.

So let me begin with the older versions:
When getting to a combobox, press enter, to activate the forms mode.
Than press alt+down arrow to open the listbox, and then arrow down through
the combobox.
You can also use first letter to jump to a particular letter, and than use
the arrow key's to find what you are searching for.
Now press alt+up arrow, to close the listbox, and often the webpage
automatically click's here, otherwise, tab to a button that can be named
go or search or something else, and press enter here.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's
to make your selection's in any one, before selecting the go/search ...
button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read
anything of the text information between the field's, you must press the
pc cursor bbutton, to leave the forms mode, and come back to the virtual
cursor.
When you then again meet's a combobox, you must again activate the forms
mode, by pressing enter.

In Jaws 10 - 11 there are an automatic forms mode, that gives a sound,
when the cursor are placed on a combobox.
Here just press spacebar, to select the combobox, and than alt+down arrow,
and just continue as described above.
When there are pressed alt+up arrow to close the listbox, the combobox
automatically are left, and you can continue to arrow down the page, or
tab, just as you want your self.

I hope that this advice can be helpful to someone.

Hans Pauli.

Try WWW.megabus.com for example.

There is a series of combo boxes there looking for origin and
destinations. Which ever method used to access the combobox Jaws doesn't

return to forms mode, arrow or first letter the next navigation and find
myself once more somewhere else on the form, go back to virtuous cursor,
relocate the combobox and so on until the selection is made.

number but a scanned image is just 1s or 0s representing more or less
shading density in particular places on a screen or paper.

The easiest way to do what you want is to open the file with Adobe Reader.
Then go to the ILE menu of Adobe Reader and select the print option. Select
the Keisyvirtual printer. This will send the image to the scanning function
of K1000 which will open and attempt to recognize the image and translate it
into text and then present it to you.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Riana,

It is indeed a scanned file from a client. Now, how do I open this file

Yes Waqas,

It could help to rather open the pdf file with k1000, which will then OCR
and read it.

If it is a scanned pdf file, jaws will in any event not be able to read
it,

without converting it to text, for which you will need a scanning program.

If it is a pdf file, not created from graphics, you could open it with any
of the later jaws versions and read it with jaws in the adobe pdf program.

Riana

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 Update Posted 11-24-09

Hello all,

We have released the update this afternoon. You should be able to locate
it

now if you use Check for Updates. Here is what it includes:

Enhancements in JAWS 11.0.746 (November 2009)

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS
11.0.734 release and the JAWS 11.0.746 posting. All enhancements since the
initial public beta release are included in this release.

* This release resolves an issue with new Windows 7 installations
where JAWS would request that you install the mirror driver after using
applications such as iTunes 9.0.2 or Roxio Creator 2010. This has now been
resolved for JAWS 11. If you experience this issue with JAWS 10 or MAGic
11
with Windows 7, download the 64- or 32-bit Video Intercept
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-whats-new.asp#Vide
oIntercept as described earlier on this page.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It
feature. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the
INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke.

* Amazon Product Search: Displays search results from
Amazon.com(r) for the word or item entered in the edit field. Results
appear

as links followed by price and shipping information.
* Bookshare(tm) Book Search: Displays search results from
Bookshare.org based on an author's name, a book's ISBN number, or words
found in a book title or book description. If a match is found, the result
appears as a link containing the author, title, and copyright date.
* Health Search on WebMD: Provides search results from the Web
site WebMD(r) for the words entered in the lookup edit field or located at
the current cursor position in a document or Web page. If a match is
found,

results appear as links followed by a brief synopsis.
* Stock Quotes: Displays current and up to 52-week historical
financial information for the stock symbol entered in the edit field or
selected from a document, spreadsheet, or Web page.
* Time Search: Displays the current time and time zone for any
location typed into the edit field. Note: Be specific when entering a
location since one name may represent multiple cities. For example, if you

[JAWS-Users] New skype?

2009-12-06 Thread Dale Leavens
Good morning list.

I am presently running Skype 3.80180, think I downloaded it some time last
spring.

I have another update message today, wondered about the advantages and more,
what about scripts. What I have now are scripts for 3.5 and while they do give
pretty good access, Skype remains an awkward programme for the occasional user
as I am.

What ever the case, I am interested in hearing about preferred versions and
their appropriate scripts. I suppose Freedom Scientific doesn't follow Skype
because of the rapid change history, I would guess that Skype is amount the
most widely used programmes by the blind and if their numbers are accurate
there are millions on line at pretty well any time I look.

Thanks for the offer, think I will wait until the tutorial is finalized.
I don't see any way to make that happen any more.

Thanks.

One thing I do miss is how the earlier version of Skype tells you when a

Another odd thing is that I don't see where to download the update on the

Is there any particular reason why, after all these versions they haven't

I hope that message apears in a form of dialog box. Just tab to no button

functions with the different commands assigned to that application.

Sigh. I'm bored. No, in fact, I am far beyond bored. What to do what to
do.
I'm this tiny box now just sitting here like I'm waiting for jerry
Springer

to come on or something. It's so depressing and dark in here. I'm thirsty.
Okay. I'm bored. I'm going to go nap.

Okay. I am awake now. God. My brother won't stay still here in this box of
mine. When I'm looking up interesting things, like how our kind were
originally made in ancient China for example, do you know what he does?
Shifts the box. I swear! He shifts it so much that it nearly topples off
the
shelf. Hey! I yell at him. I'm learning here! Go get snuffed. He tells me.
I

hate siblings.

Well, about this time my dark home is moving. its being loaded into
something that smells like an old room. Dusty and hot. Now I am being
bounced like nuts. My bro, like the evident sparkler that he is, is having
a

blast. He's an idiot. I don't like this, but I guess I can endure it for a
little while. Oh dear god! My bro is talking about getting lit. I swear.
He daydreams too much. That never happens. I heard the helicopters
however,

saying that it's the first step on a road to a different world. The bottle
rockets are of no huge help when I want to talk to someone. All they want
to

do is go boom. Sigh. Am I the only one with a brain here?

I've been trying to figure out what I am. All the adults say I am
something
special, that I will bring joy into people's hearts on one day of the
year.
I think they have all been snuffed out too long, not to mention drenched
in

water. I'm sure, like my family, I am nothing more than a sparkler. My dad
agrees with my mom, and they keep talking about me like I'm some great
thing

or something. I'm not. I mean, in school, when the big ball was talking
about how it's our destiny to be lighten up, at one point in our lives, I
was daydreaming about this totally awesome pink named. A. but see, his
families are all something called ASSORTMENTS. I don't know what that
means,

but my mom said it was very unusual, and socially unacceptable.
ASSORTMENTS don't know how to let up! My mom practically shouted when I
asked her. And they are just so confusing with all those beings in one
box.

Dear me! She got so distressed that she started to smoke.

The truck has stopped, and now my home is being lifted out and placed on a
shelf where I hear people all about walking past. I want to say hi, but I
don't think my spark looks good. I spent like 6 minutes in the bathroom
today trying to get my color just right. G! my mom yelled at me.
You have been at that for about an hour! She boomed at me. Oops. I
didn't

know that.
You act like your going to go to the show, and I will NOT, by the way,
let
you do that until you are an adult! I wanted so badly to go to the show.
I

want to do it now, so why wouldn't she let me? I mean, it's the most
important time in our lives! She's so controlling.

Oh my god! Guess whose box is right next to ours! Yep. A whole swoon of
Aerial repeaters. God. Why did I have to be put next to popular snobs like
that! Every morning I hear them talking about their sparkles!
Oh my god. That glow looks like totally good on you!
Oh my god! You think so?
Totally! as if their voices and attitudes aren't annoying enough their
little giggles and bursts of flame aren't attractive either. I want to
snuff

them out.

Oh. my god! This totally hot Reloadable shell just gave me his box shelf!
Ash! I'm dying! A Reloadable shell is like one of the most popular types
of

fireworks like in the whole wide world! Oh god. He asked me to spend the
night in his box! Oh god! I'm so excited I'm getting hot. Dear me. What
should I say? You're rather colorific? Oh god! What do I do?

Um, okay. I didn't know he was of a mixed relation. His mom and dad, even
though they are Aerial display tubes, are pretty awesome. Kind of sucks to
hear he's adopted though. His brothers, a firecracker, and a helicopter
are
also adopted obviously, but wow. He's hot. And he gleams in the darkness.
He

lights me up all the time.

Okay. Humans are gross. They want to take me home with them. I don't like
humans with their plane colors and filthy hands. Oh god. My

I have had Vista since last August and twice now it has gone down with a
corrupt operating system failure. Unfortunately that wipes Jaws too and
although there is a recovery feature available on the Lenovo computers
you need to access it through the BIOS which doesn't talk even when an
operating system isn't corrupt.

I had the option at the time of XP Pro which I didn't choose it just
seems wrong not to move with the evolving technology. Apparently Windows
7 will be a much lighter and more efficient operating system. Go figure,
an operating system which doesn't consume the bulk of the resources of
your computer.

Hi,
I have a question. My laptop recently broke, and I am trying to get a
new one. I have relized that most stuf is going towards windows vista,
but I have heard horror stories about jaws and windows vista. I have
also heard some bad stuff from a few sighted people about windows vista.
However, to get a laptop with xp on it as people have been sugesting to
me costs like $200 more then just purchasing a laptop with windows
vista.
I know one person who has vista, and has had nothing but problems and
claims tha he can't even use his laptop because Vista is so bad. I have
jaws 10.0.512U and am not sure if that even works with vista. When I got
my jaws I didn't get an extra vista c.d. with it that they talk about in
the fs cast so I don't even know if I am upgraded to use vista.
I am very familear with xp, and am not just one of those go and check my
email people. I am on the computer all the time and am constantly doing
stuff such as browsing the web, syncing to my phone, putting stuff on my
ipod, etc.
Does anybody know anything about Windows Vista, and do you know if it is
still better to get xp? My mom said that it has to work because fs says
it does on there website, and she said that noone uses xp anymore and
that it is outdated and that xp is old and that's why it costs more if
you want xp on your computer instead of vista.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Sarah
