Re: [JAWS-Users] Abbyy FineReader...anyone use it?
The Abbyy scan results are very good in my case, but there are some set up screens which are accessible but a bit fiddly to configure. The most important thing though is it integrates with Word / Excel etc, which Omnipage no longer does. Worth the trouble in my opinion. Hello As far as I can see, these premium voices require a good deal of processing power. As an experiment, try the standard version of the voice and see what you get. Previously, I'd taken the file of the currently running JAWS build, put it in the C drive, copied the exact wording into a Windows run dialog, etc. this procedure failed twice for me today. VFO seems to know about this because when I called, they had me follow the procedure I'll detail below, and it worked. I don't know why it is different, but somehow it is. So, here goes. First, make sure you have the .exe file on your system for the JAWS build you're running. You can download it from the FS/VFO website. Unlike before, it doesn't seem to matter where you keep it on your system. Close all running apps. Highlight the JAWS .exe file. Press shift-F10. Arrow up to "Copy as path." Press enter. Open the run dialog with Windows key-r. Press control-v, then spacebar, then / (the forward slash key), then the word "type", spacebar, and then the word "repair." Let me try that command line a different way. After pressing control-v followed by the spacebar, continue with /type repair Then press enter. The process went more smoothly than any JAWS repair I can remember, and it went all the way to the end. I hope this is useful. I agree Mike, it is weird. I have a bit of a theory which of course I can't prove, but the resizing issue seems to re appear after certain windows updates. I've just got into the hobbit of pressing Alt + space, X every time I open IE or Windows Explorer, just in case. These two are the worst offenders for me, closely followed by Word and Excel. These days, I mostly use my KNFB Reader app on my Moto Z Force smart phone or the OCR function of the HIMS Blaze ET for reading print. I also use the OCR function built in to Jaws for reading most PDF and other image files. However, Fine Reader still comes in handy in converting PDF to a Word file with the layout preserved well in the new accessible document. It's also great for scanning larger amounts of material through a scanner equipped with a document feeder. Fine Reader is a very powerful tool. It does far more than I can make it do due to limitations of the assistive technology and the features that compare images and machine readable text. Re: [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?
I've spent a month with win 10, starting with a dev copy and then a fully copy on my laptop, and I'm going back to, and staying with windows 7. Of all the things I disliked, having no control of updates was at the top of the list, closely followed by Edge, and also the lack of decent accessibility options for low vision users. I imagine JAWS will catch up win 10, but it already works just fine with Win 7. Is there enough of a difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 to make the change worth the transition? 4. Will Jaws be able to work with Edge and the e-mail client later on? UP till now, Microsoft has been very supportive where screen readers are concerned. Why then, is part of Windows 10 not accessible with Jaws? Or, is it too early to load 10? Re: [JAWS-Users] text cloner and openbook
I am also looking at OCR options having been an Omnipage user for many years. The latest version of Omnipage, version 19 AKA Ultimage behave really badly with MS Word and Excel so I have rejected it. I have downloaded a trial version of Abbyy Fine Reader and so far it does a much better job than Omnipage, particularly scanning into MS Word and Excel and importing PDF files. After some traffic on this list, I also downloaded a copy of Text cloner but have had quite a few issues since I installed it. For instance trying to import a PDF document creates quite a strange error response, followed by This action cannot be completed because the other action is running. What other 'action' you might ask. Keep in mind that Abbyy Fine Reader and even Omnipage work straight up, unlike Text Cloner which I will now delete. Text Cloner might be cheaper than Fine REader, but IMO that's where the advantage ends. Re: [JAWS-Users] Warning About Downloading CCleaner From JAWS Users Programs Page
Gerald, Unfortunately that's quite normal with 'modern' software installers. It's either Ask or Chrome or a few similar bun unnecessary, but you have the option to uncheck the install box during setup, IF of course you can find it. So now you can use C Cleaner to un install chrome. Glen *** On 17-Feb-15 9:41 AM, Gerald Levy wrote: I just downloaded the latest version of CCleaner, version 5.0.2, from the JAWS Users programs page, and received a very nasty surprise. In addition to installing CCleaner, Google Chrome was also installed, much to my chagrin. Using the JAWS cursor to examine the installation options in the user interface, I did not come across any check box or other means of preventing Google Chrome from being installed along with CCleaner. I do not remember having this problem in the past, so it looks like Puriform is now forcing Chrome down your throat whether you want it or not. Chrome is still not especially JAWS accessible, and removing it is a real pain. Therefore, I suggest that a warning be added to the CCleaner download link that downloading and installing CCleaner will also result in the installation of Google Chrome, which is nothing but unwanted crapware for most JAWS users. Re: [JAWS-Users] trying to read PDF files from a Yahoo groups filesection
I've been a long-time Omnipage user but found version 19, AKA Ultimate, an ultimate fail particularly with Word and Excel. While Abbyy Fine Reader isn't as posh, it's a lot easier to use and gives better responses in some areas and it integrates into Word / Excel much better than ver 19 of Omnipage. As an example I get better results scanning tables with FineReader than omnipage. (Same is true for Kurzweil 1000, developed by Cambium Learning Systems.) Two good 'off-the-shelf' packages are: FineReader, and OmniPage. You can get either one at around $200 or less, if there's a sale. F.R. and O.P. are workable with JAWS, but the interface isn't always so optimal. There are other OCR packages but these are the main ones in use. To scan paper, you do of course need a physical scanner, be it with a printter or as a standalone unit. The standalone scanners are usually the best. Not all scanners are created equal, and not all of them will work with the blindness packages.
