[JAWS-Users] Help with outlook 2016
Hi Wonder if someone might be able to help? I'm new to windows 10, jaws 16 and outlook 2016. This is what I'm currently running. I'm experiencing a weird issue with jaws not reading who emails are from. I've not changed any settings and can't figure out why all of a sudden jaws wont read that information automatically, it did so yesterday, but not now. I'd appreciate any help or advice here. Re: [JAWS-Users] revo uninstaller desktop vs portable
Hi my apologies if this has been mentioned before, I bought the full version and admitted i'm using jaws 13, but the program wouldn't work with jaws, yet, the free one did perfectly. I emailed tech support and they admitted the full version wasn't accessible to jaws users. so I asked for a full refund on those terms. [JAWS-Users] Help with getting volume back on xp computer
Hi Guys wonder if someone might be able to help me? i’m using a laptop on xp with an older version of jaws, think it’s 8. somehow something called KNCTR has been installed and when I click a shutdown button, the wave sound goes to 0 and I lose all sounds. unfortunatly I dont have any vision and dont now have any sighted help to get the wave volume back up so I can hear jaws. does any one know how I can access the volume controls without help? I know it’s a longshot but someone might be able to give me instructions. Luckily I am typing typing this on my own computer, not the laptop. *smiles* thanks for any advice. Re: [JAWS-Users] Help with getting volume back on xp computer
Hi David if it was my own computer then yes i'd do that. unfortunatly it's my mum's and something got instaled on to the computer and i'm the only one who could help to remove it. Just didn't anticipate the nasty application to drop all sounds down to nothing. I'm sorry for emailing the group as it is kind of off topic, but i'd hoped someone might be able to help me get sounds back so I had jaws again. I just forgot how to do it via the keyboard. my own computer is windows 7 and I tend to forget now how to use xp. lol. thanks again for your help. That way every time you boot up your system your sounds automatically get set to where you want them to be. I've done this certainly once but probably twice or more, I just don't remember how often, but it works which is all that matters. If you need further instructions just say so. Re: [JAWS-Users] windos live mail headache please help?
Hi Sue I use jaws 13 with live mail. when I write an email, I start the way you do, control N for new email. then rather than shift tab to get to the contact list, enter the first letter of the name you want, such as E for elaine. as you are already in the address field. then if you shift tab, then tab again, basically you are going back then forward again to the email address edit field, you will see an address there. for some reasons jaws doesn't see the address unless you do that. I think it depends on how you have live mail set up, for example, i've turned off quite a lot of things within the settings. it makes live mail more like windows mail. at first I hated live mail but now it's working as as I like it. once you have found the email address you wanted, then you can tab over to the other fields. personally I wouldn't bother with going to the contact list unless you have too. this way works for me and I hope it is helpful to you. if you need any further help, dont hesitate to contact me. hugs Elaine -Original Message- From: susie q Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 2:02 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] windos live mail headache please help? [JAWS-Users] Help with Avast V5 and Jaws
Hi guys my apologies if this question has been asked before, I've recently upgraded to Avast V 5 and am running jaws V9. I was able before the upgrade to use avast after changes had been made to the GUI. unfortunately I cant appear to change any options within this version of avast. jaws cant see the window and is very limited when trying to read the page with the jaws cursor. I can see some links I think they are for various options such as changing graphical mode for example, but I cant appear to get to it. does anyone know if it can be altered to allow me to use the program? or is it time to go find an alternative anti virus that will work with jaws. any help or advice would be appreciated. thanks in advance Elaine For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

However, I am quite sure that the initial question was how to get the size of a folder (not file) showing on the status bar in Vista. Of course, the information is available in the properties, and Vista does show file size on the status bar, but the folder size is not shown on the status bar by default in Vista, so just using the JAWS key with the numlock page down key doesn't immediately give the folder size. If mouse tips are turned on then the folder size is given when using an arrow key to move across the item. Hovering a mouse over a folder name gives the size of the folder, but JAWS doesn't speak it without mouse tips announcing turned on. Vista will give an individual file size on the status bar but not a folder size. The properties dialog will certainly show the size of the folder as it did in XP, but again, I think the original question was how to see a folder's size on the status bar. Take care. Hi Marilyn I use left windows logo key, the key to the right of the left ctrl key. +the letter M for minimize. this is a standard windows key, not jaws specific. it minimizes all apps and puts focus on the desktop. I use that when jaws appears to read strange things. might also be an idea to see what other windows you have open at the same time. too many windows open and jaws can't decide where it should have focus. so again, bear in mind what you have open when going to internet explorer. mind you, if you only have outlook express, possibly an email open, then you go to internet explorer, then it's not a focus issue. any way, next time it happens, just make a note of what is open. we might get a better idea of what is causing this. do you maximize outlook express? some people maximize all applications, I don't. Pressing once will place you on the header bar and the second will place you back in the folder view where you can view your list of folders and files. . By the way, While in the Tool bar or the Header bar, you can find additional useful controls. In the Tool bar you can use the left and right arrows to get to different actions relevant to the selected file or folder. Pressing space will activate the button. Likewise, the header bar allows you to change the options of the folder view. You can use the left and right arrow keys to move between columns. Press Space to get a menu of options. hi Estelita you can add the address to the junk folder if you wish. I like this feature in windows mail. if you press your aps key on the email and arrow up twice you should find the junk folder menu. or pres the letter J to get to the junk folder after pressing the aps key. you are now presented with various options relating to adding, blocking allowing email addresses. you can set this to block a certain email address, or the whole domain. I'd be careful when blocking the domain as you might block the wrong emails. if you don't want to use the junk feature, you can set a message rule to automatically delete any emails from that address. personally I'd just use the junk folder. it's easier. *smiles* you can use the above folder to unblock email addresses too. the only thing I don't like about that is, if you have a lot of emails in this folder, the junk mail folder that is, you can't highlight all and unblock the address. you have to do each one separately. hope this helps. [JAWS-Users] Help with Vista and folders
Hi guys not entirely sure if this is jaws or Vista, but I've noticed if I open any folders, I end up with other windows too. it takes me ages to tab round through to the files within the folder. does anyone know what I mean? if I alt tab away from this folder once I've found it that is, I end up back in a search field and not in the folder. then I've got to start tabbing around again to locate the list view. I'm not sure if this is jaws losing focus, though, I'm thinking it is more a folder option I have to change, but not sure what it is. I've got vista home and jaws 9. any help would be appreciated. thanks Elaine For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] folder options in vista
hi Brian I'm using Vista and jaws V9. my folders show the size of files. admitted I have to do a say line with jaws and it reads, file name, date it was created, file size in bytes. I didn't change anything to folders to show that kind of stuff, it's done that from when I first booted up my computer on Monday. sometimes jaws reads the file size any way but most of the time a say line does the trick. no ideas if this is typical though. Elaine - Original Message - From: Brian Lee brianl...@charter.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2009 6:54 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] folder options in vista Hello John, For some reason, Microsoft didn't include showing total size of a folder on the status bar in Vista like it was shown in XP. There are a couple things you can do. Perhaps the easiest is to select all while in the list of files and then read the status bar. It is an extra step and you have to be careful of course when selecting all files, but the status bar does give total folder size when you select all files, which you can do with CTRL+A. The other thing that can be done is to turn on the mouse tips in folder options. You can do this by opening the control panel and typing in folder options in the search box (without the quotes). Use tab key until you find the folder options choice and press enter key. Move to the view page of the dialog by using CTRL+Tab key. Use tab key into the list of options. use down arrow in the list to the display file size information in folder tips choice and make sure it is checked. use spacebar to check it if it isn't checked and then OK out of dialogs. While in the music folder bring up the JAWS configuration manager by using JAWS key with 6. Go into settings menu by using Alt+S and arrow down to verbosity settings. Press enter key to open the verbosity settings. Tab to the beginner settings and press enter key. In the list of options use end key to move to the bottom of the list. Use spacebar on the choice for announcing tool tips. Tab to and use apply or OK button until out of the dialog box. Use CTRL+S to save changes. When this is done you will hear the tool tips as you move over subfolders in the music folder. You will need to use backspace and arrow up or down across the music folder to hear its size. However, when you open the music folder you should hear folder size for the subfolders and files as you move up and down the list with arrow keys. Sometimes after moving on to an item with the arrow keys there is a slight delay until the tooltip is spoken. Take care. hi John this is very strange as I have just found folder size in the context menu. I haven't changed any folder options at all for vista. all I did was hit apps key on the folder, up arrowed to properties, routed jaws to pc and read the screen. jaws announced folder size like it did with xp. sorry John, I've no ideas how to get this information other than to attempt to set all folders back to default. for burning disks, I use a free program called burn aware. this tells you the files size as you add files or folders. it wont let you add any more than the disk will hold. it's easy to use as you only have to tab to the boxes and add data using menus. Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista
hi it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with. I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have no computer. *smiles* I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new machine any way. yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly the same. you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues. windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the latter then you sure can use the former. I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP. I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look at the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how to manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc. so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression. what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have. and, you might like it. I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention. I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am not pointing any fingers here. my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions? why do you want to upgrade? Re: [JAWS-Users] Message rules in OE with GMail
hi Ann if you want a message rule for the jaws users list, but the words are not always in the subject line, try other rules such as if the same words are in the body of the email. I've done this before and it works. you can have more than one rules working on one email. so for example, the rule, for subject lines, if those words are not found in the subject lines you could specify that the following rule apply next, say the same words but in the body of the email. that then will force the second rule to apply if those words are in the body of the email aposed to the subject line. if those words are not in either the email or subject lines, that is when the email will default to your in box. sometimes message rules can be a pain to set. the message rules apply in what ever order you have placed them to begin with. Re: [JAWS-Users] Message rules in OE with GMail
hi Anne how you do that is not incorrect, *smiles* however, have you ever looked at the rest of the conditions? you can arrow up and down and select any conditions with the spacebar. I think at times although it can be helpful to use the first letter navigation, people tend to not see what else is around. this is in no way a criticism of you though. just in general my opinions. *smiles* when I set a message rule, I dot use first letter navigation, I arrow to the items. so in the second column of items are all your conditions. you can arrow down to them, or use first letter navigation. to select any conditions hit space bar and continue down on to the below item. depending on which order you select the item will depend which rule is activated first. hope this helps Elaine - Original Message - From: Ann M. Re: [JAWS-Users] Gmail message rules
Hi mike hmmm...I'll have a go. *smiles* firstly, you have to log on to the gmail server with the account details, username and password. I'm going to assume either you or the person have been there? assuming you are using a screen reader, I'd change the view to make it easier to read links. you can have this as default when you log in. ok, so you should now be in your account on the in box page. you need to get to the spam link. you can either arrow down to it or using the links list, insert F7, then press the letter S for spam, until you reach that item. then hit enter to select and activate that link. you should now be able to go down to the spam box. I've just done this by hitting insert F6, then I looked for spam. there were two items here but it's the second one you want. that is of course if your links have two spam items. if this proves to be difficult, you can arrow down to where you will see a lot of emails with links etc. these are the emails that Gmail has blocked. on the page it says spam then under that is a combo box which says, more actions. this is a list of actions you can perform once you have checked an email. you can go through the list of course and if you find the email there you can first check that email and then look for the button that says not spam the other way to do this is to just in put the person's name in to the edit search box and hope gmail can locate it from there. sometimes gmail does add the wrong emails to this spam list, so if I know I'm expecting an email and don't get it in outlook express, I go to this page and go through the emails. by placing a check on the email allows you to perform an action including deleting these emails permanently from the google server. as I said, I periodically go through this list and either delete the emails out right or mark them to go to the in box. then they are delivered when you next get emails from outlook express. you can resend emails this way too. as long as you have your emails kept on google server, you can always retrieve emails this way that you might have deleted on outlook express. trust me, it does come in handy to keep backup emails. I hope this makes sense. I'm not that good at writing instructions. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws problem
hi Yvonne to answer the jaws verbosity question, I copied this answer from jaws help pages. I suggest you go in to jaws help and read up about jaws and various settings. this will explain things much better than I can. There are three levels of verbosity: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. The beginner level provides the maximum amount of information spoken, while intermediate and advanced levels provide fewer details. To customize your own settings for any one of these levels, open the Configuration Manager and go to the Verbosity Preferences under Verbosity Options in the Set Options menu. to answer your Skype question, you can get an add on program called Skype watch which I'm told will alert you when your contacts sign in or out etc. you can also go in to options, sounds and have Skype play certain sounds for various actions such as contacts signing in or out etc. go to the tools menu, hit the letter O for options. here you have lots of options you can change. to answer your question regarding the clock. from your start menu, go to the control panel, then to time and date. here you have edit spin boxes for changing the day, month, year, etc. these edit boxes you can either type in the numbers or arrow up or down to get the correct figure. tab between the various options. not entirely sure why you cant change the month though. if the number do not change when you arrow to them, open the box with insert down arrow and see if that helps. if you use that command remember to close the box with insert up arrow. hope this helps. To customize your own settings for any one of these levels, open the Configuration Manager and go to the Verbosity Preferences under Verbosity Options in the Set Options menu. to answer your Skype question, you can get an add on program called Skype watch which I'm told will alert you when your contacts sign in or out etc. you can also go in to options, sounds and have Skype play certain sounds for various actions such as contacts signing in or out etc. go to the tools menu, hit the letter O for options. here you have lots of options you can change. to answer your question regarding the clock. from your start menu, go to the control panel, then to time and date. here you have edit spin boxes for changing the day, month, year, etc. these edit boxes you can either type in the numbers or arrow up or down to get the correct figure. tab between the various options. not entirely sure why you cant change the month though. if the number do not change when you arrow to them, open the box with insert down arrow and see if that helps. if you use that command remember to close the box with insert up arrow. hope this helps. hi Yvonne the typing sound is enabled because you pressed insert (jaws key) and the letter V for victor to get to jaws options. this means you hear a sound each time you hit any key on the keyboard. Personally speaking I think this item is miss ladled and gives the wrong impression of what this item actually does. this sound can be changed by hitting insert V, then the letter T to go to the typing sound. this is a toggle, which means you hit space bar on it and you will go through different levels of sound the more times you hit spacebar. for example, once on the typing sound item in the options list, hit space bar once, it will give you options of non, level 1, level 2, level 3 and so on. each time the level goes up you will hear a typing sound grow louder. for no sound, hit the space bar until jaws announces non. once you are in this options list, if you tab over once after each item jaws will tell you what that item does. this is true for any program not just skype. use insert H and insert W will tell you keyboard commands for any program and also use insert F1 for further help and information. I hope this helps you sort the typing sound out. hi Yvonne I think I know now what you've done. here's how to correct this. press insert V to get to options. now hit the letter S to get to the skype command key. be careful what you hit from now on as this will alter the key. hit space bar to activate this item and then hit enter. you will then be back on your skype page. this should then be as it was originally. hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws problem
hi Yvonne yes, you can alter the punctuation for a specific program, or for all programs. Going on what you've said in previous emails, I think you would be best to set it to default. this means all the programs you use will have the same punctuation level. of course you can change this setting if say for example, you are working in word and are editing a file. in that instance you'd want punctuation spoken. if you wish to change the punctuation per program you can use the same insert V command to go to the options and press the letter P twice. or until jaws announces punctuation. Again like with the one in skype, this is a toggle command where you cycle between none, some, most and all punctuation. if you hit your space bar here, you will cycle through the options mentioned above. mine is usually set to most. I very rarely set it to all as then it is really annoying. but then I've been using jaws for over 15 years so too much chattering of jaws is well...annoying lol. there is a more permanent way of changing punctuation of course. but this will get you started for now. you can do this per program if you wish, or I can help you set them all to default. can I ask if you are a new jaws user? if I can help you out further, don't hesitate to ask. Keep in mind that this is assuming that her income, or, at least, the 1000 is only 33% of her net monthly income, or household income, otherwise no normal bank will approve you. One option you could go for is to check online with one of the major commercial banks, as they will usually have a mortgage calculator on their sites that are usually very Jaws friendly. One place you might also try is HUD's website, as I believe they have a mortgage calculator on their site, and it's accessible. Another thing you may want to look for is HUD's programs for people with disabilities, as they have tonnes of discounts and grants for people with disabilities that you can apply for, and this will affect the amount of mortgage you will pay every month, and lower the amount you will borrow also. Just something to look at to ease your burden. Hi I'm wondering if the keystrokes are the issue here. out of curiosity, choose another key combination. unless the number 0 is on the main keyboard, I don't think you can assign the number 0 on the numpad to use as a shortcut because jaws uses it. hi Darren thanks very much for this tip, it worked like a charm. I always thought to click the left or right mouse button, the jaws cursor had to be on that item. it never occurred to me to try your method. thanks again Elaine - Original Message - From: Darrin Porter darrin.por...@united-mar.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 9:06 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2003 and jaws Elaine, I do this stuff all the time. Back tab into the left, center or right edit box and press the left mouse button (slash key on num pad). The code for the function will appear in the edit box to the left of your cursor. Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2003 and jaws
Hi Dale you are absolutely correct, both ways are exactly the same. I've no clue as to why I'm told to go through the page set up when the exact same options are available and more easily accessible through the view menu. honestly the person who wrote this course seems to like to go round houses instead of a direct route. thanks for the suggestions though. now to go on to the next task... could be interesting *smiles* Elaine - Original Message - From: Dale Leavens dleav...@puc.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 9:03 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel 2003 and jaws Hi Elaine, I have just been playing with this and here is what I discovered. Now as for those Left, Center and Right edit boxes, you can type directly into them if you want. Jaws doesn't really read your typing correctly but you can see it with routing Jaws to PC and moving about. You can actually select the buttons but you will have to experiment a little. For example I discovered that ALT-D when you are on one of those edit boxes will place the date marker in it. ALT-A drops the TAB marker what ever that is. ALT-E drops the FILE marker which I assume places the filename into that section. I don't have a pair of eyes around here just now to verify how that actually sets up but it looks to me like that is the way to do it. Hope this is helpful. hi On a desktop if you press insert H it will tell you jaws keystrokes for excel. this of course is within excel. the laptop equivalent of insert is caps lock I think. also insert W will tell you windows keystrokes for excel. both keystrokes are available for all applications. I think keyboard commands for selecting text is the same for both laptop and desktop. they are windows commands not jaws specific. if you go in to the jaws help, you can find a list of excel keystrokes. I've just done that to help me out with my course. Hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] alt f4
Hi Victor some of these media type keyboards have extra keys above the function keys. my last keyboard did and I constantly accidentally hit it which would then stop my function keys from working. if your keyboard is a standard one without these extra keys, I suspect you haven't got that key. to my knowledge there isn't any substitute for this key. Very much doubt it is a modifier key either. so, guess the question is for you any way, have you extra keys above the function keys? Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook express problems, replying or writing a mail
Hiya I have had something similar to what Chrissie is describing. I'm also 100% positive I don't have any viruses. what I've done is to save the message by hitting ctrl S. close the email completely then reopen it from the drafts folder. When jaws does this trick, it will read the to, from, subject lines but not read the body of the email. it doesn't even say blank, it's like jaws isn't there. very weird. but with me, this problem doesn't happen all the time. it's totally random. Alternately, you can try to repair your Jaws in case it is the program. You can do that by hitting the installation, and you'll get to the selection where it'll ask you, if you want to modify, repair, or I think reinstall. Just hit the repair. I still think it is a virus. - Original Message - From: Chrissy chrissy31...@gmx.de To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 7:56 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook express problems, replying or writing a mail Still trying to work on my mail problem so wanted to pass on a bit more info about what it does now. whenever i am writing a mail or replying to one and use any reading keystroke combinations it seems like it is just jumping betweeen words because all i hear is jaws saying 'space' instead of what should be the text or word read out load. maybe that will help someone to figure out what is going wrong. appreciate any help I can get regards chrissy Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to jaws-users-list-le...@jaws-users.com For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: jaws-users-list-requ...@jaws-users.com Use the following address in order to contact the management team jaws-users-list-ow...@jaws-users.com If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: blind-computing-j...@jaws-users.com Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to jaws-users-list-le...@jaws-users.com For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: jaws-users-list-requ...@jaws-users.com Use the following address in order to contact the management team jaws-users-list-ow...@jaws-users.com If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: blind-computing-j...@jaws-users.com Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Visit the Blind Computing home page at: http://www.blind-computing.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To post to this group, send email to jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to jaws-users-list-le...@jaws-users.com For help from Mailman with your account Put the word help in the subject or body of a blank message to: jaws-users-list-requ...@jaws-users.com Use the following address in order to contact the management team jaws-users-list-ow...@jaws-users.com If you wish to join the Blind Computing list send a blank email to the following address: blind-computing-j...@jaws-users.com

hi No, because until Flor mentioned it, I didn't actually know it existed. just as a foot note, I have played about with that setting and now looks like I am able to copy items properly again. Hi Victor yeah? ditch jaws 10. lol. Out of curiosity, do you still have jaws 9? go back to that and see if the same thing occurs with that. Re: [JAWS-Users] Maximizing a Window
Hi Victor ah, ok, so now it happened with 9? did it before you installed 10? that bit has me interested, mean, why should installing 10 have any affect on prior versions? is it possible to turn off this menu? Have you asked someone to look at your screen for you to check that menu is up there? Am just honking that if this menu was hidden for example then that would explain jaws not responding to the keystroke wouldn't it? Am I correct with thinking F11 is also maximise? could try that see if that works at least. hiya I've just purchased a logitec LX710. I personally like logitec. this keyboard has programmable buttons and the software is accessible. although people might find it difficult to figure out which buttons are which in the settings section. only draw back is it has no aps key. has has a key called FN which is a modifier key in its place next to the right ctrl key. other than that, I would recommend it. I am running Windows XP home edition and Jaws 7.0. I have just installed Jaws 9.0 and have found, to my dismay, that Jaws 7 works, but not Jaws 9. Incredibly, this is the case, whether I have Jaws 9 to start automatically or not. I set Jaws 7 to not start up when Windows starts, then turned off Jaws. When I went to start up Jaws 9 to redo the start settings in the basic options, I found that it didn't want to start. I tried to bring up Narrator, and it came up, so I knew it couldn't be a sound card problem, but when I went to change screens to read any error messages that might have popped up when I started Jaws 9, it would not change. Narrator would simply repeat any keystrokes I pressed, and even then, it would only say one keystroke, even though I pressed two of them. For example, if I pressed alt+tab, Narrator would only say alt, and if I tried to bring the desktop into focus with windows key+M, Jaws would only say Start. I couldn't even bring up the start menu. After many times of re-starting my computer, I decided to bring up Narrator first, as I did not know that Jaws 7 would work if I started it first, and it worked fine, I was able to go to the desktop and all that stuff one would expect to do with Narrator, so I decided to take a chance and start Jaws 9.0 and suddenly, I lost focus of everything. I managed to do a read window command with Narrator and it did read me a portion of a dialog box that said Application File for Jaws, followed by For help, press F1. I could not get it to read anything else, I couldn't alternate between windows or dialog boxes and I couldn't access the start menu again for my life. Suffice it to say, I did a hard reboot, and decided to take my chances with Jaws 7, and lo and behold, it works just fine. I can't access the menu for Jaws 9, and even if I could, I doubt it would come up working, and I'd have my same problem again. Can anyone give me some advice? Am I getting shafted here without knowing it? I'm thinking video intercept error, but I don't think I would get an application file for Jaws error dialog box, but I haven't encountered this very often. I should point out that the install is a bonafide Freedom Scientific disc, not a download, right along with the authorization CD and the Real Speak voices. I'm lost here folks, and I don't know what to do. Please help. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Re: [JAWS-Users] Font styles in MS Word 2003
Hiya Annette thanks for this, I never thought of something like this. was thinking of the graphics labeller and dictionary manager. thanks, I'll try it and see if it helps. If it doesn't work, I was considering emailing FS direct and asking for their advice on this and the other problem I had with graphs and charts. your help is appreciated. I do not know if it will be of any help with your graphical font dilemma. Hope it helps. I've pasted it below. Annette Adding Speech for Special Symbols While JAWS correctly represents the most frequently used symbols with speech, you may need to add new ones. If you are reading a document and find that JAWS misrepresents or does not announce a symbol, do the following: Note: These steps are only applicable if you are using JAWS with Windows 2000 or later (that is, the unicode version of JAWS). Versions of JAWS installed on earlier Windows operating systems do not support this feature. list of 7 items 1. From the Utilities menu, choose Configuration Manager. 2. From the Set Options menu, choose Graphics and Symbols. 3. Select the Speak Character Value in Hex check box. 4. Choose OK. Then, press CTRL+S to save your changes and press ALT+F4 to close Configuration Manager. 5. Return to your document. Move the cursor to a lowercase letter a (type one if none are present) and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly. JAWS should say, Character U+61HEX. If you hear anything else, do not proceed with these steps. 6. Move the cursor to the character whose speech representation you want to change and press NUM PAD 5 three times quickly to obtain the hexadecimal unicode value of the character. Be sure to make a note of this value, as you will need it in the next steps. 7. Using a text editor like Notepad, open the .sbl file for the active synthesizer. This file is located in your user settings folder (C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\X (where X is the JAWS version number)\Settings\Enu). If your user settings folder does not contain Eloq.sbl, then look for it in the shared settings folder. list end Note: Character definitions are specific to your synthesizer and selected language. For example, if you are using Eloquence and American English, you should open the file named Eloq.sbl and modify the section named [American English]. list of 2 items 8. At the bottom of the appropriate section for your language, add a new entry for the specific symbol you want JAWS to speak. The entry should be in the following format: U+=SpokenRepresentation (Where is the unicode hexadecimal value of the symbol, and SpokenRepresentation is the desired pronunciation). 9. Save your changes to the .sbl file, and then quit and restart JAWS. Your speech changes should now take effect. list end -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Elaine Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2008 10:51 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Font styles in MS Word 2003 Hiya I'm continuing to work through my college work, and hit a part where I have to change the font style. normally this is pretty easy to do but the font I am asked to use is Wingdings and webdings. for those not familiar with them, they're pictures instead of words. for example, if you wanted to write a note for a telephone message, you could write (windings font) a picture of a telephone then in another normal font the phone number. I did that and if I used the jaws cursor to read the sentence it worked, but, not with the pc cursor. With the PC cursor, all I saw instead of the graphic, was a /. I tried using all graphics mode to see if jaws would pick up any graphic but that didn't appear to help neither. does anyone know of a way I can use this font? for my course I have to write a sentence using this font, then manipulate them, either moving copying or deleting them. Re: [JAWS-Users] registering Advanced System Care help
hiya Hugh if you want to use pro you have to register, it is the same program though. that is why I asked if anyone new how to get round this problem both Hugh and I appear to have. I looked round the options and it would appear that is where we can change what the program scans, when etc. it is a bit tricky as I found I had to use the jaws cursor to click the tab I wanted to change. I'm not sure how to explain that, but if you tab to what you wish to look at, then while on that item or tab rather, go to your jaws cursor, click it then you can tab over and locate further options. I hope this is of use to you Hugh, and also hope vie explained it clearly. I also noted there was a user section and you could change the skin either black or white. this doesn't appear to make any difference to the program though. Was hoping it was like with Avast where a skin change is all that's needed. in there was two lots of boxes which had percentages in them, but I couldn't tell what it was for. both of them where set to 0. I've no ideas what happens if you change them though. might do that see if it makes any difference. any way, over night it would appear advanced system care did something as I had a message on my window to say it had fixed things. so least I now know it is doing something. so I'd suggest just leaving it alone. I still cant figure out why jaws cant see the correct button for registering the program, I even tried changing the graphics mode to all but I still couldn't click it. any way, done now and happier it's doing something. thanks Elaine Please sign the DLA petition http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Blind-DLA/ All outgoing messages are scanned by Avast - Original Message - From: Hugh Megarry hugh.mega...@ntlworld.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 10:34 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] registering Advanced System Care help Both Elaine and I are using the pro one so don't know still if I am missing anything with pro Hugh Megarry skype hugh.megarry -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Gerald Levy Sent: Friday, December 12, 2008 12:44 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] registering Advanced System Care help If you are using the free version of Advanced System Care, there is no registration procedure. hiya no, I cant even see this window with the jaws cursor, using the jaws cursor, reads the background window which in most cases is my desktop. with the pc cursor, less than that to be honest. I've tried changing all sorts of things but nothing appear to effect this program. I've still not figured out how to see those check boxes but happier to just leave the program to do it's thing. I have found I can read the options which kind of tell me what it is scanning, even that is difficult to read properly with jaws. could do with a jaws tec who has sight to tell us maybe why jaws isn't working very well with this program. never mind... I had to do that several times as well. When we did finally hear his windows key number, I was in the process of doing this all online but then they were doing security updates and calling them we had to wait 15 minutes and try again. I had to enter a new key number and jaws didn't talk for all of that part and I'm amazed I didn't mess up hitting a wrong digit in the process especially when you can't hear what your typing..
