Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not starting when computer does.
I don't know whether this is similar, but here is what happened to me, last month. On a windows 10 machine, using no password, and jaws 17, JAWS would not start. The solution was to not check the box for starting at the log on screen. But, check the second box. Works fine. Don't ask me why. Hope this helps. Try this: 1. Be in the in box list view. 2. Strike the alt key by itself. 3. Right arrow to the folder tab. 4. Tab to the new button, and strike the space bar. 5. Type in the name of the new folder in the edit box, and strike enter. 6. If the edit box does not pop up right away, tab to it and type in the name. Strike enter. Last night I was doing research and other things. So, I started out using the latest Jaws 16, and then switched to using the latest Jaws 17. Let me know if any of you have noticed the following intermittent lockup of Jaws 17. This intermittent lockup of Jaws 17 has been doing this from the beginning of the Jaws 17 release. For example. I had the following programs and windows opened. Bookshare, F S Reader 2.0, WLM, personal folders, and on occasion my external back up drive. Using Jaws 16, latest release no issues. Using Jaws 17, latest release, it froze up intermittently six times or more in a little over an hour. The freeze lasted for 10 to 15 seconds, this is very frustrating. For example: When going into the search edit box on Bookshare, Jaws 17 intermittently freezes for 10 seconds or so, you can do nothing until it speaks. When pressing Control+N, for a new message in WLM, same thing. When pressing Control+R, to reply to a message, same thing. When pressing the escape key in F S Reader 2.0, to go from my alphabetical list of books back to the current book, same thing. When pressing ALT+f4 to close a program, or pressing Control+W, to close a window, same thing. When pressing ALT+Tab to switch From one program to another, same thing. When in the settings area, going from one screen to another, same thing. Again, this is an intermittent Jaws lockup, very difficult to reproduce with any regularity! But never-the-less, this is a very frustrating issue with Jaws 17. Again, this has been this way since the first release of Jaws 17. This is why I went back to using the latest Jaws 16 on my w-10 computer. Do any of you use Jaws 17 older version or the latest version, regularly on your w-10 computer? Have you encountered this Jaws 17 intermittent lockup, which last for 10 to 15 seconds? If you have, please let me know, also, please let F S Support know about it. Again, very hard to reproduce this problem when you wish to reproduce it. But it continues to intermittently pop up again and again in Jaws 17. I do not have this issue using Jaws 16, so, I know the issue is with Jaws 17. Any feedback on this issue would be appreciated. He told me that he hid the Windows10 installation icon. I asked how long will the icon stay hidden and he said for a few days. As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10" message re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this afternoon. Admittedly, I did not install the GWX control panel program software that a few had suggested, because I was a little leary of putting new software on my computer without really knowing what I was doing. Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created issue so far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for assistance. It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated files had been installed on my computer in several different locations. It took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly uninstalled and operating as it should. I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist was getting frustrated at several points. I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer users who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10" message, and that I would hope this could somehow be taken into consideration. I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation will not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this issue to contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it alone with only frustration as the end result. At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent experience. Re: [JAWS-Users] IE 11
What happens to those of us, who cannot upgrade to IE 11.0? I have an older desktop computer, and I cannot get any version later than IE 8 to download and install. The Microsoft Accessibility Desk worked on it for almost an hour and half today. They repeatedly tried to find ways to get IE 11.0 installed to no avail. I have a paid version of AVG as an anti-virus. I rarely use the computer for anything on the internet, other than some banking and google or amazon stuff. What should be of concern to me? Several weeks ago, I tried to upgrade it to Windows 10. When I ran the FS tool, the computer crashed badly. I had to go back to a restore point. FS recommended I delete all FS products, then, try and upgrade to Windows 10. However, the MS Help Desk did not think that was a good idea, given the big crash. I think there must be some hardware thing wrong with it. I plan to replace the computer with a Windows 10 machine in the spring. So, again, with what should I be concerned after January 12? Should I stay away from doing any banking on it? Would using it for e-mail be OK? Thanks. [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 in safe mode

[JAWS-Users] Windows 10 crashes; safe mode & restore?
Hello Gang: I have a windows 10 laptop that has been working fine for almost two months. Yesterday, right after jaws came up, I heard a question similar to: "Hello, how do you like this picture. We will be sending you more, et cetra." Even though I do not sign in with a password, I was able to find the sign in button, and struck the space bar. However, the computer crashed. as in shut down. I thought it was automatically re-starting, for some unknown reason. Did a forced re-start. Heard similar info. Found sign in button. Space bar. Computer shut down. One of the times, I heard something about starting in the locked mode. Now, the computer starts normally, as it pertains to the sound and humming. However, there is no sound. Not even the windows start up sound. The computer automatically shuts down in about a minute and half, after I press the start button. Without sighted help how do I get it to start in safe mode? Since narrator has been so good in windows 10, will it allow me to do a system restore? Sighted help might arrive, sometime tomorrow. But, I was just wondering if I could do it using jaws and narrator. Thanks, and Merry Christmas. He is The Reason for the season. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 crashes; safe mode & restore?
Well, since there is no talking, how do you know when the desktop is up? Would this just be a time estimate? I can probably do a windows I, and quickly get to update and security, because I have been there several times. But, after striking enter on update and security, how does one know where recovery is? Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook Express, options, finding advanced page, removing message from server
Thanks for your instructions. I found the page, and unchecked the box about leaving messages on the server. But, apparently this "fix" is not retroactive, because there are still thousands on the server, with 670 being unread. Is there a way to get those old messages off the server? For instance, if we elected to leave messages on the server, but choose for them to be deleted after 15 days? Then, would it delete all those prior to December 1 or 2? Strange problem. Logic would seem to say that unchecking that box would have taken off the messages that had been read. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks. When you press alt+T for the tools menu, assuming you're using the original Outlook Express, press the letter A for accounts, and in the resulting dialog box, arrow up or down to the account she's trying to change the setting on. Once highlighted, press alt+P for the properties dialog box, then control+tab to go to the Advanced tab. One thing I would recommend is to leave the copy of messages on the server, but check the box after that that says, "Remove from server when deleted from the 'deleted items' folder", this will ensure that she's got a copy of the messages she wants to keep or archive, but deletes the messages she doesn't want to keep when she clears her deleted items folder. Just a thought, but feel free to act according to the person's needs. Hello Gang: Have a laptop with Win 10 and JAWS 17. I have no log in password. So, in the jaws "automatically start dialogue box," I do not have the start jaws at the log on screen checked. I have all others checked. I had a password issue that has been resolved. Now, when I start the computer from a cold start, jaws will automatically start, as always. However, if I re-start the computer, jaws will not automatically start. Would checking the start at login screen fix this? If I do that, will the computer stop coming up at the log on screen, until I strike enter? A little weird, since this has not been a problem in the past. Tried calling FS, all afternoon. Got a busy signal every time. Thanks. Neil For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Blocked out of Windows 10 computer; password not recognized
Hello Gang: I had never used a password on the computer. However, I have two or three MS accounts. I tried all three, even a fourth password from my wife's MS account. None of these worked. She looked at the computer, and saw the hint for the password. She tried typing in the password. No luck. She saw a re-set option that included inserting a thumb drive. Tried all we know there. Saw some information saying we needed to have created a "recovery password disk." Apparently, even before all this started. I had been using Windows 10 for almost precisely one week. I had tried the instructions to verify the MS account, but could never get to the point to have a code sent to me. Help! Jim, David, Rick, or anyone else. Is there a Microsoft phone number for password issues? Is this something the Accessibility Desk could solve? I liked Windows 10 a lot, until this. Thanks a bunch. [JAWS-Users] Locked out of Windows 10; Can a bonified MS person unlock computer
Hello Gang: After almost precisely one week of using Windows 10, I got locked out. I was in the process of setting up an MS account, and even established a password. Nor, will it accept any other MS passwords I have. For the user name, which narrator does not read, it just has the first and last name, with the proper capital letters, and a space between the first and last name. My wife could see that. So, here is my question. Can a computer geek at the local shop push past the password and unlock the computer? I would not mind investing a little money into it. Probably an hour's worth of work. [JAWS-Users] Upgraded to Win 10; Accessibility desk great help; Narrator good in Win 10
Hello Gang: I got an old laptop computer upgraded to Win 10, with some great help from the MS Accessibility desk. I used them, because I had so many updates, 161, that had not been installed. Not sure why, because I had selected automatic. Anyway, they spent a very long time with me over the course of two days. I have customized the computer according to Jim Flusche's instructions. They are spot on!! I, also, wanted to tell folks that my fear of Win 10 was unwarranted. After it was installed, all my desktop items from Win 10 were on the new desktop. Nice. I was dreading the thought of having to do that. I may be wrong, but I think the old thing has been "juiced up." Seems faster and smoother. This is an impression, not a scientific fact. I am very happy that I did it. A re-furbished desktop is next. May not even need help from the accessibility desk, since I have the excellent instructions from Jim Flusche. He is a tremendous resource. Have a great week. Neil For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] Win 10, narrator not working; don't die laughing
Hello Gang: Just upgraded to Win 10. All my old desktop items are on the new desktop and working. Nice surprise! Before I deleted JAWS 16 and re-install JAWS 17, I thought I would test out narrator. Windows + enter indeed starts narrator. However, when I strike the arrow keys or tab/shift tab, all I hear is the name of the key or "unknown key." So, turned narrator off, and went to my desktop with windows E. Turned narrator back on, but could not go anywhere on my desktop, with narrator. Here is the laughable question: I still had JAWS running. Does narrator not work with JAWS running? If it does work while JAWS is running, how do I get narrator to do anything other than announce the key I strike or say, "unknown key?" I never used narrator, because I found it so un-useful. I saw a place for different settings for narrator, but did not fool with them. Just wanted it to work! Smile, and thanks. [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft Accessibility; Says sighted assistance necessary
Hello Gang: I tried to upgrade an older Dell laptop to Windows 10, yesterday, through the MS Accessibility Help Desk. But, was unsuccessful, because I had so many Windows 7 updates to download and install. Still having to download some today. However, here is my point. While talking to one of the MS helpers, he told me, "Well, Sir, you know that when we do the download for Windows 10, there will be a time, when there is no connection with us, and sighted assistance will be necessary." I replied, "Well, I understand at that point, I can turn on the narrator and complete it without sighted assistance." He said, "I don't think that is really the case. You need sighted assistance." Well, according to the notes from Jim Flusche, The narrator is totally useable, after the 10 install. Or did I misunderstand Jim's instructions? Two final questions: 1. Does FS send out CDs for the JAWS 17, for those of us with a SMA? 2. Would a CD be a good thing to have for starting a new Windows 10 computer, or can that be done via narrator, as well. Thanks. Hi Neil, The answer to almost every question you asked is yes. The desktop works exactly the same. You can use another email client Outlook, Windows Live mail, or Thunderbird. The settings area is much easier to use. The start area works even better. You can pin any programs to the start area. There isn't that much to do to customize win 10 for what you want at all. It really isn't that different to windows 7, but it is so much better, because you have the tile apps in the start area. You can use those apps, and download more usable free apps through the windows store. There is also something called quick access. You can pin many programs to quick access and set that to open by pressing windows + E. You can set default apps for your browser, email, music player and so on. You will really love win 10 on a new computer. Win 10 is also very quick and stable. It will only get better and better with more up dates. Take care. -Original Message- From: Neil Towery Sent: Thursday, November 5, 2015 10:05 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Purchasing computer with Windows 10;Installing JAWS & MS Office on it. There has not been much conversation about purchasing a computer with Windows 10, already on it, and installing JAWS and MS Office on it. So, I have several questions, about doing just that. Many of us use only word, internet, and e-mail. And, some more are involved with music. But, I don't do very much music on my computer. Just the main three things mentioned earlier. 1. Does the desktop still "look" the same? In other words does windows D take you directly to the desktop? 2. Can I place the programs there as in earlier versions of Windows? 3. How would we access your audio tutorial? Will you be doing a word document file for it, anytime soon? Neil -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Moore Sent: Thursday, November 05, 2015 4:49 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Google Chrome is totally accessible Hi all. I have been experimenting with Google Chrome Browser, and I have found that it is very accessible and easy to use. More than that, I can open the same web site in half the time as with IE or Firefox. It never crashes, and it is more stable than any other browser. It is the best browser when it comes to streaming videos and other media by far. The video never pauses for example. In IE, the same video pauses a few times for a few seconds. Also, Google Chrome is the easiest browser to use. Yes, I am not kidding. Simply press enter on the browser, and the home page opens. I have mine set to Google of course. Now, just press alt and the screen reader will say chrome button. If you press down arrow, every setting and menu you will ever need is in that one vertical column. The history, delete history, book marks, are all in that one vertical menu just by pressing the alt key on the home page. All navigation JAWS short cut keys work in Google Chrome. I have not found anything yet that is not accessible. Also, every JAWS key command works in Chrome just like in IE. You can just press alt + D for the address bar for example. I will continue to play around with Google Chrome a little more, and I will be ready to do an Audio tutorial for you guys. You will not believe just how much better Google Chrome is over any other browser. You will hear it with your own ears when I send you the tutorial probably by Friday. I know some of you will use Chrome as your default browser. God bless and have a great night. Talk to all of you soon. [JAWS-Users] Purchasing computer with Windows 10; Installing JAWS & MS Office on it.
Hello Gang: Much of the conversation has centered around upgrading from Windows 7 or 8.1. 3. Can I put short cuts on the desktop the same way? 4. Does the start menu still work the same way? Can I put the three main programs on it? 5. I understand Edge does not work very well. Can IE 11 be downloaded to the desktop? 5. I think the same is true for the e-mail package that comes with Windows 10. Would I be able to install Outlook or WLM on the new computer? 6. [JAWS-Users] Almost accidentally installed Windows 10
Hello Gang: Currently using Windows 7 and latest JAWS 16. I have updates set to automatically download. So, I wanted to check to see what updates had downloaded. So, I struck the windows key. In the search box, I typed: check for updates. I struck enter, and was faced with a "Get started button." Dumb me, I thought it meant get started looking at the updates that had been automatically installed. For some reason, at some point, I rooted jaws to the pc. Don't remember why. I discovered that windows 10 was being downloaded. Found and selected the stop download button. So, it was that easy to screw up, and do something for which I am not ready!! For those as dense as I am and not too tech savvy, be careful. I went back and selected something other than "download automatically." Probably, "download but let me decide what to install." I am wandering around in unfamiliar territory. Neil For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [JAWS-Users] is Avast! better than windows defender?
Hello Gang: Well, like most things, there is a wide range of views. I have a friend, who uses Avast. He thinks highly of it. An earlier post said that the paid version of AVG was accessible. Glad to hear it for that person. I have the paid version of AVG, and don't really find it very accessible. For example, I can't figure out how to change the scan settings, even though there exist a button for it under scan options. Also, if I arrow all the way to the top or bottom of the page, JAWS goes silent. A friend set up the schedule. I don't know how to determine when the last scan occurred. The only "voluntary" information I get from AVG is that "you are protected." So, I don't know whether the inaccessibility is due to JAWS, AVG, or me. Have a great day. Thanks. Hello Gang: I got a refurbished Windows 7 machine last year to replace an xp. Two people have tried to upgrade to something higher than IE 9. Neither was successful. One of those techs was at the MS Accessibility desk. They got IE 11, but it was unuseable, as in could not use the bank web site plus others. I called MS back to roll it back to IE 9. I have not been infected at all since it's installation, and if you're getting that many infections, then maybe it's time you reviewed your downloading habits, and your e-mail security settings. If you're careful about what you download, and don't just download indiscriminately, there's no reason why one would get a virus. Keep in mind that I am talking viruses and not spyware or malware, as those are more like tracking beacons and items that are used to track your usage on the Internet, and those can't be caught just using one program. In order to get complete results, one must use multiple malware and spyware detection utilities because, as you may or may not know, there is no central database of definitions in which to draw from, and so each company has their own list of definitions. Regardless of which, I don't think viruses are as rampant as these programs would like us to believe, and with a modicum of caution and a once a week scanning, one can avoid the hassles of viruses and their kin. After pressing Windows key+I, You are now in the Settings area of w-10. You are now in a horizontal list of 9 categories, this means a Left to right list of 9 categories. Pressing Enter on any of these choices, will open a Vertical list of sub-categories, that means an up and down list of sub-categories. The first item in the sub-categories is always already selected, this means you can begin Tabbing across the different Controls immediately. If you want to look at any other sub-categories below the first one, just down arrow to the sub-category you want to look at and press enter. Now you can tab across the various controls, under your selected sub-category. Very important: Jaws has a tendency to ramble on in the Settings area of w-10. For Example: When you select a sub-category, and tab to the first Control under that sub-category. Jaws will read the sub-category information followed by the Control information of what Control you are on, followed by its current setting. So, after getting use to how Jaws reads the various settings windows in w-10. Press the Control key, to shut Jaws up. Press the Insert key+Tab, To have Jaws repeat only the information about the selected Control you are sitting on, and its current setting. What does current setting mean? When you hear, Button or Button checked. These are known as switches, Button checked, “the switch is on”, Button, “means the switch is off”. Combo-box, Followed by the currently selected Choice in the Combo-box. Use ALT+down arrow to open the Combo-box, if you want to change the choice. Use your arrow keys to change the selected choice, followed by enter on the new choice, this will change what the Combo-box is displaying. Press Insert key+Tab, to read your new setting in the combo-box, to verify that you changed it correctly. When you hear Radio button, followed by, it current selected Button. Use the up or down arrow keys, to select the desired radio button, just Tab to your next Control. When you hear list or open list, you are in a list of items, use the Down arrow to highlight, or to read through the list. OK, let us look at the Setting window sub-category called System. Windows key+I, for settings. Press Enter on System. You will hear, Display one of ten. So, Display is already selected because it is the first item. Please remember when tabbing across the Settings windows, you will always, eventually come to a Home button. Pressing Spacebar or Enter on the Home button, will take you back to the main Category page of 9 horizontal Categories. If you tab past this Home button, you will come to a Settings Search Edit box, You can type in a setting you are looking for and either press enter or tab one time to the list of possible results. This is another way of searching in w-10 for different Settings. If you Tab again, you will be back to the list of Sub-categories where you began. [JAWS-Users] AVG killed JAWS
Hello Gang: A VA rep installed AVG 2015 on a desktop and laptop in the past few days. JAWS was killed on both computers. Is that a problem with AVG 2015? Or, were we suppose to tell AVG to leave JAWS alone? Neither she nor I did that. And, I received no prompts asking if there were to be any exceptions to the A V G doing its job. So, who screwed up.us or A V G? If it was us, how do I solve the problem, if I put A V G back on the computers? Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] AVG killed JAWS
It is AVG Internet Security(not the free version), and they installed it with my permission. I talked to an FS rep today, and he said that we should have made JAWS an exception, when the AVG was installed. Apparently, there is a way to do that. I have no experience in installing anti-virus software. I think what we will do is re-install AVG, and go through the steps to make Freedom Scientific software an exception. So, it sounds like there is plenty of blame to go around, including the VA rep and me. Thanks for your valuable input. I'd say the VA had no business installing software unless they asked first. I personally have AVG free 2015 on 2 computers, both running Jaws 16.0.4350 and don't have any problems. I'd be curious as to which version of AVG was installed. If they installed a trial of AVG Internet Security I could see that messing with Jaws. In particular, the firewall could be blocking Jaws from running, in which case you would probably have to pull up Narrator to find this out. This assumes that Narrator can read the dialog box presented by AVG. Jaws works for reading the boxes, but NVDA for example has problems. I need to know how to save the new version to my desktop and how to create a hot key for it. If you install Jaws 16 on your computer, it will automatically create a desktop icon for you. Freedom Scientific assumes that you will want to use the new software right away. Can I leave the old version of JAWS on the desktop? Yes, you can. They will be marked Jaws 13 and Jaws 16. [JAWS-Users] Repair JAWS
Hello Gang: I ran the FS utility tool in preparation of installing Win 10, at some point. Now, when JAWS comes up I get a message about the FS mirror displays. If you are interested then read on as I explain. Now I have configured many a signature line in my day and I know how to set things so that all new messages along with replies and forwards always get the appropriate signature attached. Having said that in this case my signature lines only show up on new messages and that’s all. I always use a specified file for my signature lines so that if I ever decide to change my signature for any reason it is much easier since all I have to do is edit the file rather than going to tools, options, and flipping past 5 or 6 tabs to get where I want to go and fiddle with all of that stuff. FYI I’ve done this in outlook express, outlook 2000, 2003, 2007 and if there was any other program in my past I am drawing a blank as to what it was at this moment. For JAWS 15 portable, it looks like the download files and the extracted files will need around 200 MEG. After you've downloaded both the 32 bit and the 64 bit files from FS, copy them to the thumb drive. Now press enter on one of the downloaded files. The first screen that appears asks where you want to extract the files to. The default is the high-level folder of the thumb drive. Assuming you chose the 32 bit version, tab once and you'll be on an edit box that specifies the high level folder of the thumb drive (Drive Letter colon backslash). Press the end key to move past the backslash and enter a folder name such as JAWS15-32. Then tab to the next button and press enter. Now all of the JAWS portable files for the version you chose will be placed in the folder you specified. Now repeat the steps above to extract the files for the other version and specify a folder name like JAWS15-64, assuming you are now installing the 64 bit version. Using Windows 7, I don't believe I've ever seen an auto run dialog popup automatically. So I create a startup file in the thumb drive high-level folder to start JAWS portable. In the high-level folder create a DOS batch file with a name like JAWS15.bat. The file extension must be .bat. Now position on the newly created file and press the applications key or shift+f10 to bring up the context menu. Arrow down one time to edit and press enter to open. Now copy the 6 lines that follow and paste them into the open batch file. Make sure the folder name in the batch file match what you named the folders. Then press control+s to save and alt+f4 to close. @echo off if "#%programFiles(x86)%#" neq "##" ( start JAWS15-64\jfw.exe goto :eof ) start JAWS15-32\jfw.exe This batch file will start the appropriate 32 or 64 bit version of JAWS portable. Now all you'll need to start JAWS portable is the drive letter where the thumb drive is installed. If the thumb drive opens when the thumb drive is inserted, move to the batch file and ;press enter, or press Windows key+r for the run dialog, type Drive letter colon backslash batch file name.bat. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Neil Towery Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2015 03:37 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] issue for portable jaws Hello George: I have read the instructions from the link you provided. Re: [JAWS-Users] issue for portable jaws
There is a way to put JAWS on a thumb drive so you can go plug it into a computer, without jaws, and jaws will work on the computer. Then, when you are through, just unplug the thumb drive. However, I don't know exactly how to do this. Just trying to understand it and learn how to do it. Not there yet. Hi. If you don't use smart navigation, everything behaves as before. Say word, Say Character are not quick navigation keys, but those two are the ones affected by smart navigation, when smart navigation is in affect, these keys require two quick presses to allow you to navigate the text character by character or word by word. This is because the arrow keys otherwise navigate by element, so one press of right arrow for instance might go to a link, or perhaps a button, you won't be able to use arrow keys to spell the name of the button for instance if you don't understand what it says unless you do sayCharacter keystroke twice quickly, thereafter the arrow keys will read the name of the button character by character as you'd expect. Remember, smart navigation is off by default anyway, and that only really affects sayWord and sayCharacter keystrokes. They do recommend however that you use semi auto forms mode or manual, because navigation quick keys like h won't work very well if you have smart navigation on, and fully auto forms mode, because if you arrow onto an edit box it will enable forms mode, then if you try to use h it'll just type h in the box instead of going to next heading, and you won't be able to get out of the box with arrow keys I suspect (not verified) until you hit escape. Navigation quick keys really are not affected in any way by smart navigation, but the auto forms mode setting remains with the same 3 options as in jaws 16. If you leave smart navigation off jaws will behave exactly as it did in version 16 when it comes to web pages in every way to the best of my knowledge. Also, yes, smart navigation will be new to JAWS 17. 1. I downloaded the appropriate Jaws into the downloads folder on my desktop, because After I struck enter on the download link and selected the save button, I never saw the choice to download it to the thumb drive. 2. Then, I copied it into the thumb drive. 3. Next, I struck enter on it. Tabbed to the extract button, and struck the space bar. Now, I have several things on the thumb drive: open=JAWS15.bat Action=JAWS icon=JAWS15\jfw.exe shell\JAWS="" shell\JAWS\command=JAWS15.bat What in heavens name is all this? Which one is the actual JAWS software? Can I delete everyone except the actual JAWS software? I may be in the position of having just enough information to be dangerous. Ha! Over my head? Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Smart Navigation: How much do you understand?
ot contain controls, you can only switch to character and word navigation. Pressing ESC or moving focus away from the control or table cell will switch back to the prior navigation level, for example, pressing ESC while in character and word navigation will return to Smart Navigation in tables. When Smart navigation is active, press ALT+DELETE or INSERT+TAB to have JAWS announce the current Smart Navigation level. Anytime you are using Smart Navigation, either set to Controls or Controls and Tables, JAWS will work in Screen Layout. This presents pages in the virtual buffer similar to how they appear visually on the screen. Toolbar buttons or other lists of controls that are visually laid out horizontally on the screen are displayed on one line in the virtual document, allowing a single press of the DOWN ARROW to skip the entire toolbar instead of having to move from button to button to get past it. For a great example, please try JAWS 17 on a web form such as the Web Track sample form on the Surf's Up pages. On this page, you will be able to see the power of navigating more efficiently with the DOWN ARROW then in previous versions. New Sound Indication for Links As you navigate by line with Smart Navigation active, JAWS plays a sound if the current line contains one or more links which would generally be displayed on separate lines when you are not in Smart Navigation. This sound helps you identify that a link exists and gives you a chance to pause to hear about it or use TAB or the ARROW keys to move to it. To keep this sound from being too intrusive, it is not heard if a line contains a link that is preceded by less than five characters. For instance, a bulleted or numbered list that contains a link directly after the number or bullet.
