Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Not Announcing Safe To Remove
Hi, It's what worked for me here whether it does or doesn't force the announcement of said message it does put the safely remove hardware option in the system tray which makes many feel better even if some argue you don't need to use it any longer. I always do just to be safe. Note there can also be more than one windows explorer entry so someone might have to activate or deactivate each to see what it might or might not cause to appear or disappear. But since these are toggles that's easy enough to do. Take good care. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS crashing
Hi, Speaking strictly for myself during the most recent two crippling shutdowns this method failed as something in the jfw hang caused me to not be able to impact the cursor by using keyboard commands thus even if I got into the shutdown menu I could not by any means known to man machine or beast move the cursor off of shutdown nor could I invoke the shutdown that supposedly had focus. It is a sad sorry state of affairs when it afflicts one and I never saw it before the most recent build of jfw 18. I haven't been able to pin down a cause for what brings it about so I can't make it happen at will but when it happens as I said it is really not nice at all. Re: [JAWS-Users] Live Mail Irratation
Hi, I have no answer for the problem but can verify experiencing it as well and suspect that since support for the program from Microsoft will be ending in early 2017 it might only get worse over time. That's why I've begun using Microsoft Outlook and I'm sure fans of other programs will chime in as well with their favorites. While it's true that as long as one has an installer for the program and can get it up and running it will remain usable this highlights one of the problems that comes with continued use of such programs which won't continue to evolve to integrate into newer operating systems or to handle newer protocols or security concerns. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and itunes support
Hi, I've seen nothing in writing that would indicate such and would find such an assertion suspect in the highest degree as it doesn't seem like it's serve its maker's purpose to even state such a thing if indeed they even had. Just my two cents no one asked for. Speaking of JFW and iTunes I made Apple Accessibility aware of a bug whereby when syncing something like music or ringtones if you choose sync selected tracks or tones screen readers are unable to read the resulting list view from which you can check your selections. If others are so inclined feel free to join in drawing Apple's attention to it in hopes it can be fixed as they acknowledge it's their issue not one lain at the feet of screen readers. For all the iTunes users. iTunes 12.3.317 is out today. Funny thing when I opened my iTunes today, it told me that there was an update. I tried like usual using Jaws 17, to go through the iTunes update normally in which I have no issues doing to update iTunes. Today however it failed twice. So, I went to ninite.com and downloaded and ran it from there with no issues. This seems to be my week with facing all kinds of issues.LOL. Yesterday, I added some audio files to my OneDrive group download page. Microsoft wanted me to use the groove music app to play them from OneDrive. That was fine. But they had a stupid ad trying to get me to buy it for all my devices. They had a get started button, but know way to decline the dumb thing. I had to recreate my OneDrive shared folders on my desktop giving them a slightly different name. I then copied all the tutorials from the old folders to the new ones. I stopped sharing the old folders and deleted them. I put the new OneDrive folders in sink with my computer. I got a share a OneDrive link for both folders individually. I then had to switch to Jaws 16 to make changes to my Yahoo group settings, Jaws 17 still will not work doing this task. Both my OneDrive group download pages are working correctly now. Seems like Microsoft is trying to integrate all their programs together. This is a challenge all by itself, we don’t need all the ads to complicate things even more. Are any of you who are using Jaws 17 to update iTunes having any problems? Thanks for listening. Now time for more coffee. Hi sir, I wasn't advocating for or against it one way or another. I've run with it enabled and disabled at different times. I don't have a horse in this race (smile). I was just trying to clarify the point as one of the earlier posters made it seem as though one needed to turn off the use a password option in the mix with all of this and I didn't think that was correct. pardon my paraphrase of its actual control name. I wrote this on the fly and didn't stop long enough to get the exact wording. I hope that makes more sense. Sorry for furthering confusion on the matter. I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done using the computer, I use shut down. In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10 seconds or less, my computer comes on with Jaws talking. I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the desktop. Hi, Sadly with HP's the only way to change that setting is to get someone with a pair of eyes to walk through their instructions for changing that setting in bios. Other makes sometimes have the setting available under keyboard settings in control panel or system but not HP sorry to say. I wish I had better news but there you have it. I tried the function key and the f10 for the applications but still nothing happened, in fact nothing is happening. I want to change the way the function key works anyway because it is easier to use JAWS when the function key is for the volume and tracks and the f keys are for what they normally should be. Can anyone give pointers as to why I can't get anything to happen with the f keys? Thanks for any help. Re: [JAWS-Users] disable quick start in win 10
Hi, Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's instructions say you have to turn off requiring a password to disable this. I didn't think you needed to do that. can someone clarify as I wouldn't want to disseminate erroneous information but I truly didn't remember having to have done that as I'm still logging into windows with a pin and my machines are still set to require one but I did disable fast startup myself. thanks bunches for clarifying. Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a sound when they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick start does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same as a complete shut down. I do not like the quick start for all of these reasons. Re: [JAWS-Users] dvdvideosoft free youtube to mp3 converter
Hi, when last I looked which was last week it was right on the same page as the regular download just below it with the classic designation. while the current non-classic version is more accessible than the one that preceded it you still can't access options which limits a lot of functionality so for now the classic version is still the best bet in my view. Re: [JAWS-Users] on some websites I can't activate buttons
Hi, I've noticed that when encountering some of these buttons or links sometimes turning off virtual cursor temporarily in jfw enables them to be executed. I hope this helps. I have the same problem with my banking website. I sometimes have to switch browsers, and sometimes I have to change screen readers in the middle of what I am doing to click a button, or link. I think the website is just poorly coded not taking accessibility into account. There is a lawyer in California that is an expert in getting many of these sites to make their websites accessible. She made Bank of America change their website to make it more accessible, and she just made humana make their prescription labels accessible. She also make CVS do the same thing. I try routing cursors, turning off virtual cursor, left clicking, just about everything I can think of but the keystroke won't work to get me to the next page. I see it a lot on banking sites and on submit or continue buttons. Due to the configuration of some newer websites with maybe too many graphics--just making a guess--is there just no way to be able to use buttons and therefore the inability to complete tasks on these sites without sighted help? I truly hope there's an answer and that it's not impossible to use these sites independently. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] november windows 10 update
Hi, With all due respect I can't speak authoritatively as I don't work for them but I can say that when I renewed just a few weeks ago I was specifically told that my SMA's were for versions 18 and 19 specifically. So I'd be careful not to assume that they can be used for any future version regardless of number. For if that were so people wouldn't have to pay for multiple upgrades in order to catch up if they were a few versions behind. Just a thought. I just used my last SMA to upgrade to 17, and I did renew my SMA's, but the FS salesperson did not state that they were for Jaws 18 and 19, nor did the sales receipt that I received via mail a few days later Mike mike@comcast.net -Original Message- From: Neil Towery Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2015 6:28 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] november windows 10 update I will be very interested in what FS tells you. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws activating wrong link why?
Hi, I can confirm this behavior. It's happened a few times to me recently on Amazon.com. I was on the your orders link. It verbalized your orders but somehow after entering on what verbalized as your orders I ended up on a page for sellers on amazon. thank goodness for alt left arrow. I could reproduce this at will so I think I can safely say it wasn't user error in this case. As for its cause or solution such still escapes me but I can indeed confirm the behavior you report. I know it isn't a solution but sometimes knowing that an anomaly isn't unique to you and your set up can bring a bit of solace. Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: the get windows 10 appears on my system tray
Hi, It is my understanding that you'll be notified of its availability but it won't automatically install. If someone reserves a copy they have a year to install it. As such it would stand to reason that it wouldn't automatically install on the first day as then there'd be no reason for the one year window. I think confusion stems from the fact that many outlets have reported that updates for windows 10 I.E. once windows 10 is installed will become automatic for home users but the update to windows 10 itself is not automatically installed. I hope this serves to clarify rather than muddy the waters. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 Annual Update Fee -- Is it a Reality or Not?
Hi, Googling yielded many results that informed me that if one for instance reserves a free upgrade to windows 10 all updates remain free for the life of the device it's on and the same holds true for all updates were one to purchase windows 10 when it'd be for sale. I.E. once one owns a copy all updates would be for free. So it is my understanding that there would be no subscription model put in place for windows 10. Either people get the upgrade for free or they'd choose to purchase it outright after the offer for the free version expires after a year but there is no cost for updates. One article stating this can be found here: http://www.pcgamer.com/microsoft-windows-10-will-not-be-sold-as-a-subscription/ Robin -Original Message- From: Dave Carlson Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2015 2:16 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 Annual Update Fee -- Is it a Reality or Not? Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with mail delivery for some members
Hi, Sadly Comcast is famous for bouncing email lists such as this one. It's why I moved all of my subscriptions to a gmail account years ago. Sometimes gmail too flags them as spam and traps them in their spam folder easily accessed and rectified through their web interface but I haven't had as many incidents of bouncing therein. Now watch me jinx myself having said that (smile). I recognize this is not a viable solution for all I just wanted to mention that this is not a new occurrence at least with Comcast. Re: [JAWS-Users] Access to Paypal.
Hi, While I haven't experienced this at Pay Pal I have seen this behavior at the site of my financial institution. I didn't catch which version of Jfw and which browser the original poster was using and for that I beg your pardon. In my instance it was Jfw 15 with Internet Explorer 11. The work around was to navigate to the tools menu add the current page to the compatibility viewer and things righted themselves. It's just something to try which can be undone if making no difference easily enough. Strange, I use Jaws 15 and just completed a checkout on Paypal through eBay late Friday November 29. The paypal interface hasn't changed. One thing I did note is when you go to checkout from eBay, there is a link to their accessible checkout page, but once I transitioned to Paypal, the layout was like it has always been. Just speculating here, but you may have been bitten by the Jaws bug where it sometimes will not focus on the page on the screen. Sometimes, if I go to the address bar, it will not focus back on the screen even if I press control-f6. One of two workarounds: First, if you can find something relevant to the page using the jaws review cursor, you can then move the Pc cursor to the Jaws cursor with Jaws-key numpad plus. Second workaround is to unload and reload Jaws. I don't experience this issue with either Window Eyes or System Access when i try to go back ffom the address bar. Hello List members, For the past 12 plus years, I have been able to access Paypal using JAWS to complete payment transactions for items on Ebay. It appears that Ebay recently made some kind of change to their site in completing the Paypal transaction process. Earlier today, I attempted to pay for an item from an auction that I had won on Ebay. When I clicked on the log into Paypal link, using the Enter key, a blank page opened up. I attempted to log in using the spacebar and cursor routing, right mouse click options: none of which allowed me access to Paypal, but again, a blank page opened up on the screen. Has anyone else on this list encountered this issue? Whether or not you have, I would appreciate any suggestions for a keystroke, or work-around so that I can access Paypal, (through Ebay) as I have heretofore been able to do. Hi, It would seem reasonable to me that perhaps if a call to FS tech support is placed they could initiate a tandem session with your machine in an effort to help resolve this problem. Whether you or an agency meeting your needs purchased jfw for you someone is paying for the opportunity to access technical support so it seems reasonable to avail one's self of it in the interim instead of having to settle or work around that which is broken. Perhaps if others complain they'll augment their changes improving the situation once again. Using JAWS 9 and IE 8, I am somehow no longer able to change or select any options on the Google search settings page under options on the Google home page. For example, under the heading Google Instant Predictions, the words On and Off are displayed, but there is apparently no way to select either of these options. Under the Results Per Page heading, the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 100 are shown, but there is no way to select the option you want. And when I hit Space or Enter on the Save Preferences button, nothing happens. I have cookies enabled, so that's not the issue. JAWS announces that there are no check boxes or radio boxes on the page. I never had problems with the Google Search Settings page before. Previously, the settings could be changed by selecting the appropriate check box or radio box, but JAWS either no longer recognizes these boxes on the Search Settings page, or they have otherwise been eliminated. Did Google change the Search Settings page so that it is no longer JAWS accessible? Or am I missing something? Can someone explain what the heck is going on with the Google Search Settings page? Thanks for any help.
