RE: [lace] Wedding lace

2019-06-23 Thread Annette Meldrum
The handkerchief as we know it is in fact only around 400 years old. It was
said to be the idea of a Venetian lady to cut a square out of pure flax and
decorate the edges with lace. From Italy, it soon crossed the Alps to France
and the court of Henry II.
Handkerchiefs of this period were usually adorned with embroidery and were
objects of great luxury and a showy dress item, carried in the hand rather
than tucked into a pocket. Many portraits show handkerchiefs flowing from
the hand.

Antique examples were extremely large,15-20" of fabric. Smaller items are
usually described as chalice covers.

Ladies, we should not be too critical of author's mistakes as publishers are
often to blame. From my own experience of writing a book, it can be very
difficult to get corrections made to everyone's satisfaction as every
correction means a time delay and publishers can override an author's
requests for corrections to save money and time. It can be so disappointing.

[lace] Wedding Veil

2018-05-20 Thread Annette Meldrum
I finally found a good photo of the embroidery on the veil.

http://meghansmirror.com/royal-style/royal-wedding/meghan-markle-wedding-cer
emony-dress/

After enlarging and enhancing the photo I can confidently suggest that the
embroidery was tamboured with some needle applique as well.

The photo clearly shows the predominance of chain stitch in the stems and
lots of looping and filling work which can all be done with a tambour hook.
The applique may have also been tamboured or done with a needle.

This makes perfect sense as tambouring is the fastest process and in order
to research, then design the flowers of all the Commonwealth countries to
fill the circumference of the royal length veil, it was the best method to
employ. It has been said that the dress and veil, including the embroidery
was done in the Givenchy workrooms in France.

Tambour has always been an important part of Haute Couture embellishment.

result in the pricking for a different ground to what we know as point

there is a ground of honeycomb stitch (CTTpCTT) referred to as Spanish

RE: [lace] Bucks Prickings

2017-12-05 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi ladies,
As you requested more information, I checked my notes, and this is what I
recorded. Spanish Blonde prickings, known to be over 100 years old. They are
designed for a triangular mantilla, with the borders heavily worked and the
ground worked in strips with flowers at intervals. Pins were expensive, so they
only used every second hole and it is evident that only every second row is
fully pricked. Suitable for 120 thread, doubled and twisted for the flowers for
better coverage, 250 thread for the ground. It was explained to me that Spanish
Blonde lace is not as fine as the French Blonde lace. The correct name is
French Blonde lace in the Spanish tradition.
As you suggest, it could be Almagro blonde, but I did not record that and maybe
it was not suggested as I would not have understood the difference.
Sorry for any confusion,
Best wishes

Hi everyone,
I hope I’m understanding this correctly. When I studied Spanish Blonde at the
Lace association in Barcelona in 2015, the same thing was explained to me about
pinning only on either side of the tulle. I also did not prick the pattern. I
did however use a pin in every stitch of tulle, because I was a beginner and
wanted more security.

Hi all,
Interesting discussions.
In Spain, I was given some very old Spanish blonde prickings for our lace guild
archive. The lacemaker who donated them, explained that the ground was only
pricked in each alternate row as lacemakers only pinned alternate rows to make
the work quicker. She is a lacemaker and lace historian, so I trust her
knowledge.
The prickings are well used and indeed only pricked in alternate rows.

I have a theory, that in order to save time when working large areas of point
ground some workers would work a row of stitches without pinning up, at the end
of the row the pins were inserted into the pricked holes all in one go. One
worker bobbin would follow a row and would therefore be used to tension the
work. I’ve tried this and it works well.

I have on occasion sent info to people who have asked but I have not kept
everything, just topics that interest me so that I have never used the

I have to say that I highly value the information shared on Arachne and have
learnt so much. I have most of Jeri's emails carefully saved under

[lace] tape lace distinguishing features

2015-11-17 Thread Annette Meldrum
Borris Lace and Branscombe lace both use a machine made straight tape. Like
a tape made on the straight with whole or cloth stitch.
Battenberg lace uses Battenberg tape which is courser and made on the cross
grain so that it can be drawn up to fit the design curves by pulling the
gathering thread that runs along the edge of the tape. Princess tapes can
also be gathered up in this way.
Borris and Branscombe tapes do not gather and must be whipped along the edge
to gather up. Branscombe tape is all mounted and whipped to lie flat before
working the fillings. Borris tape is drawn up while working the fillings.

Hope this helps with understanding. Please ask questions if I have not
adequately explained it.

RE: [lace] Borris Tape Lace-Annette Meldrum

2015-11-16 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi all.
It is similar to Borris Tape lace but it does look a little stiff! Borris
lace is usually more flowing in design but otherwise the fillings are
reflective and square mesh ground is characteristic. The Point de Venice
edging is also characteristic.
As it has no bars with picots it is not possible to definitively classify it
as Branscombe or Borris. As mentioned in the previous email the picots can
often determine the place of origin and the technique. I think that
Branscombe almost always included picoted bars and the picots are large
(called nibs). In my book on Borris Lace I have a table which shows the
similarities and differences between Branscombe and Borris laces as they are
very similar in some aspects but poles apart in others. The picots are the
defining difference.

Wouldn't it be nice to know more about the maker, what it was made for and
for whom? What a shame we don't keep better records of what we make and why.
We are no better at doing this than previous generations.

Thanks for sharing Nathalie. I have not found any new examples of Borris
lace for ages. It must be out there but still hiding?

RE: [lace] Stunned

2014-02-12 Thread Annette Meldrum
Jane,
As an overseas buyer on eBay (Australia) I would be deterred from buying a
glass framed item from the UK as postage is expensive and the chance of the
glass arriving in one piece would be minimal. Even well packaged books often
arrive with bent or damaged corners.
Glass framed items therefore are not popular or the buyer can hope that the
seller will take the glass from the frame before shipping but not all
sellers are this obliging.

A beautiful design. Please feel impressed that your design was liked so much
that it was beautifully worked and framed and enjoyed on his wall for the
remainder of his lifetime by him and supposedly his friends.

RE: [lace] Bonham's lace auction 21st January 2014

2013-12-27 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Catherine and Jeri
Marie Laurie gave me the information re the sale. Marie had a Christmas Card
from Roger, Susan's husband with the details of the auction in case she
wanted to view it online. Marie spent Christmas with us, so while she was
here, I searched Bonham's under the sale date Roger gave and then 'searched
within' for 'lace'. I came up with 5 pages of lace items: lot numbers are
between 309-355, some of which Marie recognised from her days of classes at
the School.
Marie particularly remembered the Hollie Point which Susan brought out for
her to study while she was learning Hollie Point as a private lesson.
Marie gives Susan credit for getting her started on lace and through Susan's
encouragement Marie went on to devote her life to learning and teaching
lace.
I have made a tinyurl to the items I believe are from the Lace School, part
of Susan's personal Collection.
http://tinyurl.com/lkbce8u

Roger supplied these details but I cannot get any results from these :

Marie is not on arachne but I forwarded Jeri's email and she is trying to
ring Roger to get more information but he seems to be away at present.

I will let you know if we get further clarification.

Best regards

I have a 95-page 1980 lace exhibit book called Catalogue of Antique Lace
from Dr. A. I. Spriggs' Collection at The English Lace School
(Tiverton), copyrighted by Mrs. S. M. Cox. Does anyone know if
Spriggs was related to Mrs. Cox? Are the laces in the January 2014
 auction from his collection?

Also, I found a 1 1/2-page May 1980 article Mrs. Cox wrote for
International Old Lacers in the U.S.. This was about 18 months after
The English Lace School was opened in Tiverton. It was quite a leap
of faith to start, because there was nothing like it in the U.K. at
the time, and there were very few lace teachers.

Good morning Jeri

I have been unable to find the lace items for auction from the late Susan
Cox effects, so am unable to identify whether or not some are from his
collection. However, I did teach for many years at The English Lace School
both at Tiverton and Rockbeare where at that time the Dr Sprigs collection
was on permanent loan to the School, and every evening after dinner Susan
would bring out a selection of items from his collection, which we were all
able to view at close hand - what a treat that was!

I believe it was when the school closed that the complete collection then
transferred to the museum at Exeter. I have a letter from Dr Spriggs giving
me permission to photograph and use any of the lace from his collection for
my book that I was then writing 'Needlelace Designs and Techniques Classic
Contemporary and several examples from the collection are featured in this
book. Heather Toomer and myself stayed at Cynthia Voysey's home and Heather
Toomer was in charge of the lace collections at that time. The three of us
spent a wonderful day together at the museum, discussing, photographing and
drooling over the beautiful laces in the Dr Spriggs collection.

If you are able to view the lace on the auction site and have a copy of my
book, you will possibly be able to identify and compare the laces. However,
somehow I doubt that any of the lace would be included in the auction as it
did not belong to Susan Cox but was on permanent loan and was then
tranferred to the museum at Exeter when the school closed. To the best of
my knowledge, Dr Spriggs was not related to Susan Cox, but I don't know for
certain.

Annette, I couldn't access the lace collection with the link you sent,
neither have I been able to find it through 'Google'

Happy New Year to all and I hope you have been able to make a little time to
yourselves to sit and make your lace, be it bobbin, needle, crochet, tatting
etc.

Roger Cox is selling some of his late wife Susan's 'English Lace School'

Susan Cox set up the English Lace School in Tiverton, UK in 1979. She
succeeded in reviving lacemaking in the UK by teaching live-in lace classes
and inviting the well-known lacemakers of Europe to come and teach at her
Lace School.

These items for sale were part of her private Collection and decorated the
rooms of the Lace School.

The school outgrew the premises at Tiverton and moved to Rockbeare, a
village near Honiton. It closed a few years later do to the demands of the
unexpected arrival of 2 young sons.

So many of our well known lacemakers of today, Bobbin and Needlelace, after
studying at the Lace School went on to teach and continue the revival and
publish the books on which we now depend.

The Lace School also started the John Bull Lace Competition (Mrs John Bull
was the beneficiary) and after the closure of the School, the English Lace
Guild continued the prestigious competition.

Susan died from cancer in 2010?

Small images of representative items are available to view.

RE: [lace] 17th c. premade tapes, Mezzo Punto

2013-11-24 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Devon and all.
I did some research into the early tapes for my book on Borris Lace. See
p.14
Mezzo Punto was first employed by lacemakers in Milan and Genoa in the 17th
century according to Mrs Head, The Lace and Embroidery Collector, 1922, p33.

The manufacture of braids was an important craft in medieval Europe where
they were produced in workshops and also made by noble women as a leisure
activity. Crowfoot E. et al, Textiles and Clothing 1150-1450, Museum of
London. 2008 p.130

I also found references to loom-woven linen tape produced in Holland prior
to 1885. Caulfield Saward, A dictionary of needlework, 1885 p.472

I expect that the early tapes were produced by both loom and bobbins. An
early piece of Borris lace in the National Museum of Ireland dated 1868
contains a thick but narrow tape which resembles a tightly woven shoe lace
which I presume to have been made using a small loom similar to
illustrations in Crowfoot where the tape produced resembles this shoelace
style of tape.

An interesting topic but much that is written seems to be conjecture.
Unfortunately I haven't time at present to look up my research notes so have
just referred to what is mentioned in my book.

Regards
Annette in Wollongong Australia.

Devon wrote:

In the 17th century there were laces made from premade tapes. The tapes

elaborate needle lace stitches. These tapes look to be of woven linen.
I would think it would be much easier to make such tapes with a small loom.
However, my colleague who weaves thinks it might be easier to make them
with bobbins.
P.S. In the 19th and early 20th century there were laces based on these
early laces such as Battenburg lace that were quite popular. It is often
the case that these are also called Mezzo Punto. In fact, it may be that
only in the 19th century did they start to call the tape based laces of the
17th century Mezzo Punto, so this adds to the confusion. I am assuming that
all the tapes in the 19th and 20th century were machine woven.

Dear Elizabeth,
When I was researching Borris Lace, I tried to inquire as the whereabouts of
the Borris Lace items purchased for or commissioned for the Royal Family.
P.31 a large order came through from Givens of London, about 1938, for a
set of table mats for the English Royal Train for the tour of South Africa
by the King and Queen. The train tour never happened due to the onset of
WWII. My enquiries as to where these mats might be now or other Borris items
known to have been purchased by royalty. It was suggested that they may have
been lost in the Windsor Castle fire in 1992. Apparently some royal lace was
housed there and was lost.

I hope this was not the case with the Youghal lace wedding train.

Annette,

Please be aware that, in the US at least, images taken by someone else, even
if they are published on-line, are under copyright protection unless
permission to download is explicitly stated on the website. The ebay
sellers who restrict download are protecting their copyright, which they
have every right to do. Downloading without permission is in violation of
US copyright law which has international force, although many people do it
and are not in the usual course of things going to be prosecuted. Just be
careful distributing the photos, for example to your museum, because
publishing them without the copyright-holder's permission, even
inadvertently, does stand a higher likelihood of prosecution and you
wouldn't want to get your museum in trouble.

[lace] Buratto vs. Filet Lace

2013-09-25 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Devon and all
Below is some research I conducted a few years ago when I acquired a piece
of 16th century Buratto. It is basically a list of references and
definitions. I think it is best to use the two names, Buratto really refers
to the weave and not the work and so at least to call it Buratto it must use
the leno weave base. Hope this is useful to your student.
Annette Meldrum, South Coast of NSW, Australia.

The cloth has a loom woven background mesh that is technically a gauze and a
form of darning over a leno weave. Paired warp threads are twisted before
the weft thread goes across. Alternating twists to left and right, make the
spacing of the weft threads settle at nice secure squares. There are no
knots in the mesh. It is a sister to Filet only in the square mesh
background and the way the figures are filled in. The construction of the
mesh is very important to the name. The squares are filled in by needle and
thread to make the contrast between open mesh and solid figures.

Buratto References
Buratto refers to an early type of weave with woven intersections forming an
open mesh. Sometimes called sieve weave.
It was usually embroidered with a curved needle -using locally spun silk
thread often coloured. Woven in Southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia-
usually of hand spun linen thread. Many pattern books were published to
provide patterns for this work (earliest 1527). The mesh is woven on a loom,
the threads being twisted at the junctions resulting in a square mesh.
Over-darning with silk provided the design. Similar to lacis (knotted mesh)
and copied lacis designs..Buratto is distinguished by the cloudy ground. It
is rarely found due to its age, particularly if embroidered with coloured
silks which deteriorated. After 17th century it was forgotten until revived
by the arts and crafts movement in the 19th century.
Gwynne J. The Illustrated Dictionary of Lace 1997. P.50-51

Filet or lacis as it was first named (from the 12th century) is probably one
of the earliest forms of lace and was used from the medieval times for
decoration of household textiles and dress accessories. In lace
classification terms, it is an embroidered lace because it is worked over a
previously constructed base fabric. The base fabric of filet was originally
a hand knotted square mesh. It had a 'companion' fabric which was known as
Burato or Buratto (from the Latin bura meaning coarse cloth). The Burato
used for lacemaking is a hand woven square-meshed fabric (leno weave) in
which pairs of warp threads are twisted, and the twist fixed by a single
weft thread. The earliest patterns for these laces, published in the 1500's
were identical and designate their use for both forms of lace embroidery (
and could be used for other kinds of counted thread embroidery like
monochrome cross stitch).
Contemporary filet is in fact Burato because it uses a machine -woven leno
weave fabric as its base. (Hand knotted filet laces are still made in China
for the western market. Lacis is the umbrella term - filet lacis and Burato
lacis. This was Mrs. Hungerford Pollen's solution, no doubt influenced by
Lefebvre, and earlier writer, who says that according to a dictionary of
1684 lacis is a 'tissue of net', the threads of which are knotted or
interlaced the one with the other. Contemporary lace historians prefer to
keep the two techniques separate.

Dear Alice,
Your idea of decorating tables with bobbins and lace equipment is a great idea

I hope to remember the idea for next time I am asked to speak about lace. Thank

RE: [lace] conference - many classes

2013-04-22 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi from Australia.
Our conference runs 2 or 4 day classes with Wednesday being a day of rest or
practice or time to explore the local environment.
One can take 2 x 2 day classes or a 4 day class all week.
In addition we offer short 2 hour classes at night which teach a small project
or technique.
Perhaps our smaller numbers in Australia are an asset in that it allows us to
use schools for accommodation. Mostly our smaller numbers are our difficulty.
Interesting comparisons.
Our current school accommodation is quite comfortable and modern, with heating,
secure and lockable rooms, well lit, elevators, warm carpeting, group sitting
rooms, group kitchens for tea, coffee, and refrigerators and ensuite bathrooms
and we feel very spoilt the way they look after us.

Someone questioned how a person could attend many classes at a conference. I
used to belong to a sewing organization that held an annual seminar for half a
week. Most of the classes were 3 hours long so people could go to two a day.

Commercial hotels are expensive. Schools usually are less expensive but have
less luxurious rooms and facilities. Many schools can readily hold only a
smaller size group than IOLI often has.

Hi Mary
You don't necessarily have to use a continental pillow with continental
bobbins.
It may be easier on a flat pillow as they don't roll around so much. It
would also be easier to teach on a pillow you are familiar with.
But perhaps you feel that she would manage better if taught to hold the
bobbins rather than pick up and roll?

Jeri, Lorelei and All,
I understand that it is hoped to offer Pag lace as the needlelace class at
OIDFA in Slovenia in 2016.
I have also heard that there is a reluctance in Pag to teach outsiders their
special lace. This could be why there are no how to books available.
I did a lace tour of Slovenia this year prior to Caen OIDFA and it was
amazing. The OIDFA Congress in Slovenia is a not to be missed event! Their
lace is beautiful and their county amazing. Their people so generous and

RE: [lace] Bobbin question

2012-07-21 Thread Annette Meldrum
At OIDFA in Caen, I bought some paper Mache bobbins from the OIDFA stand. They
were made from a thick roll of paper then thin strips of paper were wrapped to
form the thread section and another wrapping at the bottom. They were colourful
- used glossy paper and varnished to make it all firm. These could be made to
accommodate a larger than normal thread supply.
At 2 euro each I was very happy with mine and might try to make some?

I finished the Christine Mirecki silk scarf about two weeks ago, just never
got round to taking a photo. The needlelace collar I finished today. I made
it in Gutterman 100/3 silk, using one whole spool. The center back element
is a class I took with Liz Ligetti last year at convention and the other
flowers and leaves were from Catherine Barley's book. I still need to work
on my netted ground. I think I must have been tired when I did some of it
because the size is not consistent. I worked on the scarf during the day
and did the needlelace watching tv at night, which also might account for
the uneven netting.

RE: [lace] Lace Auction in New York

Thanks Jeri for a most interesting browse.
What a shame to see these items being sold off from Collections. I guess
they were stored away from sight in these museums anyway and never seen by
the public?
You wonder where they will end up?
Museums usually don't have money to purchase from auctions these days I
think? They seem to be more interested in selling.

I was also interested in the suggested prices. Much lower than I imagined
for most items.
It would be interesting to see the final selling prices.

I wonder how much interest there will still be in the fine laces for future
generations so far removed from the times and knowledge of the methods of
production.
The xyz generations are so minimalist with quick fix and throw out habits.

Thank you for posting these links for us all to enjoy.
I was particularly fascinated with the article on the lace from the Wedding
Dress as I have been following all the posts and magazines and wrote a
summary for our Embroiderers Guild magazine which received a lot of comment.
It is a shame that the process was kept so secret but I am pleased to read
your report confirming what we thought. There has been just so much guess
work and frivolous reporting by journalists who have no idea and don't
bother to check their facts.

Those of us who live on the other side of the world, appreciate the
on-the-spot reporting. I am so envious of the ease of travel and do-able
distances in Europe compared to us in Australia who must sit in a plane for
20 plus hours to reach these destinations.

RE: [lace] future value of a specialised Lace Library

2010-10-05 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Jeri and others
I am chiming in a bit late after recovering from the excitement of my son's
wedding.
Interesting topic, as a Librarian and owner of a small personal lace library
myself I have wondered often about this. Like you I used to think that my
books would increase in value as they become rarer and hard to find.
On the other hand, I have also been keen to acquire ebooks for my uni
students as they are easier to locate and download and serve students at
multi campuses. However, researchers (serious students like us lacemakers)
keep telling me of the benefits of thumbing through a print book and being
able to just flick back and forwards visually between pages etc. They are
frustrated with ebooks and ebook readers still don't seem to allow this
quick flicking either with time lapse between loading each page. I can
certainly see their point,.
I think the print book is probably going to outlast the digital age for
serious researchers providing that the print books can still be produced
economically. Print on demand may be the only way this will be possible.
I lose patience with downloading from the Arizona site despite the fantastic
content. Maybe when my life is not so busy I will enjoy using it more.
Having said that, I have used it for researching my book and it was a most
valuable resource.

Lorelei is also correct in saying that digitized collections are being
archived in new and exciting ways which may improve retrieval in surprising
ways. However, volumes and volumes of books are being destroyed after
digitization because storage is too expensive. If the systems crash like
Lucy and others have predicted a lot of knowledge will certainly be lost.
Digital backup and storage is also expensive and everything eventually comes
down to cost.

Thanks for raising the topic Jeri and thanks for all the great insights
everyone.
Thanks also for your work in preserving the lace resource centre.

RE: [lace] The meaning of Mezzo Punto

2010-08-23 Thread Annette Meldrum
Nathalie, you are exactly right. Mezzo Punto was also known as half-point
where half the work utilized a pre-made cloth tape, either woven or bobbin
made with the remainder consisting of needlelace fillings. It dates back to
Milan and Genoa in the seventeenth century surprisingly.

I discovered this when researching my book; The Borris Lace Collection: A
Unique Irish Needlelace, Marie Laurie and Annette Meldrum, Milner Craft
Series, 2010. Borris Lace is a Mezzo Punto style lace now more commonly
known as tape or braid lace. Point lace was another name used but one which
causes confusion so is seldom used these days.

I'm assuming that Mezzo Punto refers to mixed or half stitch? So I
would be inclined to think it's because it is a lace made with a
bobbin tape and needle decorations? Mezzo means half in Italian, or am
I wrong?

Thank you in advance.

RE: [lace] Netting

2010-08-09 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi all,
Margaret Morgan teaches netting here in Australia and I did her class in
Brisbane at the Australian Lace Guild AGM.
One of the hardest techniques to pick up. The knot is very involved and goes
wrong if you loose concentration.
I finished one small doyley in class over 2 days (and much of the night
inbetween) and have completed another since but now that I have mastered the
basics and can understand the process I might leave it at that.
Not for the feint hearted but a great thing to do. Margaret was a great
teacher and I don't think I ever would have picked it up from a book.

RE: [lace] Finding Casalguidi in Italy

2008-08-20 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Barbara,
Catch a train from Florence to Pistoia. You can get a bus from the square in
Pistoia. Take care as there are two bus stops with Casalguidi listed. You
need the one in the centre of the square, not the one near the shops and the
news stand. We caught the wrong bus and did a lovely drive up into the
mountains, then the bus turned around and took us back to the square and
then to Casalguidi. All very nice scenery but we wasted a morning.

Best to ring the Library before you go as the Librarian who looks after the
museum, only works part-time. Alternatively, ring the council as the Museum
and Library are in the Council building in the main square. They speak some
English. Lots of shops sell the embroidery. They close early afternoon so
try to arrive early in the day. There is also embroidery in the church -
alter cloth etc.

Sorry haven't got time to try to look up numbers, I am off to Sydney now for
2 days.
Hope it is successful for you.

The main difference between Brok and

thread made with short bits of cotton that has been coated with a strong
sizing that is effective only until the first washing. I don't use Finca at
all anymore.

This is a subject I've been thinking about for awhile. I wish I knew what
the thread manufacturers use for sizing.

RE: [lace] Burano lace

2008-01-24 Thread Annette Meldrum
Dona
You need to know your lace before purchasing in Burano. Most of the lace for
sale in the shops is imported lace from China or wherever. You need to look
deep inside the best shops to find the real thing and be prepared to pay the
fair price that they will charge.

The cheaper laces are mostly machine or hand embroidered tape lace. If you
go to the museum first you will see the real thing and the lace makers at
work so then you will know what you are looking for.

RE: [lace] Puncetto help

2007-10-24 Thread Annette Meldrum
Avital,
We used a number 30 crochet cotton and worked onto the folded edge of a
small piece of fabric while learning.
To make fabric just work stitches close together and on the return row,
stitch in between every stitch. You can work pyramids on an edge by
decreasing a stitch on each side in each row etc. To make holes, you work a
post eg. Across 3 back 3 across 3 then miss 2 stitches by making a larger
stitch across the space. This is really difficult to explain in words
without pictures but work 3 stitches up the loop to make a spoke, throw
across again etc.
Work back and forth without turning your work.

Enough for one virtual lesson?

OK, here are my questions:

1. In the YouTube video, you can see that in addition to the usual
filled and unfilled squares, there are also diamonds. Are the diamonds
worked from the point, going back and forth and getting wider, then
narrower? Or are they worked along one of the straight edges, back and
forth, like a square?

2. The stitch itself is rather short and wide. So how do they work the
filled squares? Do they work back and forth in rows? Or do they make a
tall stitch and then knots going up the side, the way they do for
separating empty squares?

3. Someone on Flickr told me that she begins her Puncetto with a
3-stitch ladder (worked on a supporting thread wound around the
finger, like in the video) until it's long enough. It looks as though
the lacemaker is calculating the squares at 3 stitches (skip 2, make
the bar on the third stitch). Is this correct?

4. What kind of thread is recommended for Puncetto?

Thanks, everyone!
I even brought my tapestry needle and some perle cotton with me to work. ;-)

I would like to add my support to the comments of Tamara and Catherine.
Variety is the spice of life and there is really nothing new under the

My goal is to appeal to the average lacemaker. Not to the art

collector, not to the lace connoisseur, not even to a historian or a

serious student. So I try to guess and anticipate her tastes; maybe

broaden them just a tiny little stitch... But I do not try to push them

into radically new dimensions, because they, mostly, match my own --

fairly pedestrian and staid and ordinary -- tastes perfectly :)

My sentiments exactly Tamara! However, we are continually being told 'we
MUST not live in the past but look to the future' with regard to lace but I
also frequently hear, particularly with regard to Exhibitions/Competitions
the likes of the 'John Bull' and 'Seven' that 'there is a distinct lack of
traditional lace' and this is the reason why The Lace Guild now have a
category for Traditional laces which do not have to conform to the given
theme, in an attempt to encourage more traditional lace entries.

Fortunately we now have an abundance of lace 'how to' books, so there is no
fear of history being repeated with lacemaking techniques almost being lost
forever. There is something out there for everyone and we should not allow
ourselves to be dictated to or made to feel inadequate because we do not
wish to conform to other's ways of interpreting our
passions/pastimes/hobbies/relaxation etc. but just do what we each as
individuals, enjoy the most.

[lace] Puncetto knotted needle lace

2007-07-29 Thread Annette Meldrum
Yesterday I was told about this YouTube movie which shows the making of
Puncetto lace.

Puncetto is a lace made in the Italian Alps around Valsesia. Traditionally
it was worn on the blouses – around the neck and cuffs and set into the
shoulder seams.

Very hard wearing and very beautiful.

I learnt to make Puncetto at the first Italia Invita Congress in Rimini in
2003.

It is pronounced Poonchetto

The best reference is the Anchor Manual of Needlework Chapter 11. I bought a
book in Italy but it is in Italian and I think it is out of print.
Manuale del puncetto valsesiano by Angela Petterino Camaschella.
Valsesia Editrice, Borgosesia 1992. No ISBN.

If you google Puncetto you will also find some good sites.

Enjoy

Thanks for posting the link Annette - that's gorgeous, and I love the
simplicity of just the needle and thread creating the lace - no pillow, no
laying a trace etc etc. Do you know of any books with Puncetto technique
details?

Hello Spiders!

I came across a fascinating picture on eBay just now! There is not much
information about it, but it shows a group of American Prairie Women,
gathered around a table quilting bee style, and all making lace!! Since
there is little in the way of history of lacemaking in the US, I thought
everyone would like to see it. Go to eBay, and enter this item number in
the search field:180142776249

RE: [lace] Embroiderers' Guild (UK) 100th Birthday

2006-09-09 Thread Annette Meldrum
Dear Jeri and all
Thank you for a very interesting perspective and I loved reading about the
connections of Lady Reigate as I have her book but had no idea of her
connections.

Yes, as Jeri suggests, the New South Wales EG was started as a branch of the
UK EG. After gathering strength, the NSW Guild became autonomous. In 2007 we
plan to celebrate 50 years! In Australia, each state has its own autonomous
Guild. NSW was the first. We exchange information and occasionally tutors
but not much else unfortunately. I am a member of NSW and South Australia
and have visited Victoria and Western Australia. All are similar yet
different.
In the early days when NSW was part of the UK Guild, we had many visiting
tutors from the UK who helped us widen our horizons. We were also assisted
in the early days by loans of collections from the Needlework Development
Scheme, organised by the EG UK on our behalf. This scheme was developed in
Britain to encourage greater interest in Embroidery and to raise the
standard of design. The Scheme was run by the Art Schools at Aberdeen,
Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow and when it disbanded in 1961, the collections
were shared amongst Museums and The EG in Britain.
I have a book; Embroideries from the Needlework Development Scheme: Royal
Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, 1965 which documents the items received by the
Edinburgh Museum and gives the history of the Scheme.

Where would many of us be without this organization to emulate in various
ways? It was the organization that definitely influenced Americans to
establish
The Embroiderers' Guild of America, Inc. as a separate entity. And, if that

is the case, perhaps the Embroiderers' Guilds in Canada, Australia, and

Connecting the web of history, dear Arachnes, is a very interesting

[lace] Mary Quelch 1609 sampler and Montacute House

Thanks Jeri
As usual very interesting. I can tell you that I visited Montacute House in
2003 and saw the said collection which just happened to be on display at the

Unfortunately there was not a catalogue or postcards or any other

started.

What is found? His collection was donated to The National Trust, and is
located today at Montacute House. I Googled Montacute House, but could not
get to
the pictures of the sampler collection. Perhaps someone else can find with
the information provided above. Or, perhaps there is a new booklet for
people touring Montacute House that contains pictures?

This is a most unusual sampler, given that the first dated embroidered
sampler on cloth is the 1598 Jane Bostocke, at the VA. I once sat an hour
staring
at the Bostocke, and then had to tell Joan Edwards the story the sampler
told
me! It seems to me we might learn something by staring at the Quelch. It
happens to be a fun exercise.

Hoping some of our lace enthusiasts will be inspired to do some research and

crochet edging. So now my collection has grown. When they visited Ireland

again not Bobbinlace, so I am getting a beautiful collection of different

Hi Everyone,
Just to let you know that the new royal prince in Denmark was christened
today in one of Copenhagen's most beautiful churches, the Church of
Christiansborg Palace. His name, which according to the Danish royal
customs, was first made public at the moment of his actual christenng and he
will be known as Christian, Valdemar, Henri, John. It was a truly beautiful
ceremony and Mary looked radiant in her new role as mother. The baby was
wearing the beautiful robe of Brussels lace made in 1870 for the christening
(in the same church) of Christian the 10th of Denmark. It has been a
tradition for the royal family to use the gown and it will be on display in
the royal palace of Amalienborg next week.

RE: [lace] Arachne Dowager vs. Youthful Lace Enthusiast

2005-10-23 Thread Annette Meldrum
Hi Jeri and all,
I would like to second what Jeri says about reaching out to young lacemakers
and getting them involved on the list. They will be the means of continuing
the skills and traditions of our beloved craft and need to be nurtured and
encouraged.
At the same time I think it is good to acknowledge that many of us have been
here for the 'long haul' and that says a lot for this lace list. I too have
been here since before the first arachne anniversary bobbin and credit most
of my lace knowledge to this list. I don't post often, and I am always
hundreds of emails behind with my reading, BUT I never think about
unsubscribing even when I go on holidays. I wouldn't want to miss anything.
I carefully save relevant information to my extensive list of subject
folders. I keep this backed up as I could not bear to think about loosing
this resource, collected over so many years. Needless to say, it is getting
quite large and needs to be condensed but who has time? One day?

Thanks everyone for making arachne such a great resource and for the
wonderful friendships.

Dear Lacers, having read some of your reports about the Halasi Lace,
I thought you might be interested about my visit to Kiskunhalas and
Kalocsa in 1984. Alas the report is fairly long but I could send it in
 seperate articles if you like.

Dear Dora,

This is a most generous offer. It covers a time period when the situation in

Kiskunhalas was quite different - before Hungary became an independent
nation. I would be most grateful for the information you compiled in 1984,
and will share it with the lacemakers in Budapest

If others on Arachne agree, I would suggest if you receive 10 or more
requests for your 1984 information, it should come to the list.

RE: [lace] Lace book

2004-05-12 Thread Annette Meldrum
Thanks Sue for all that, now I can rest assured I made the best decision. I
checked my order today and it will arrive any day. They allow 11-15 days
delivery to Australia.

who also found a very cheap second hand copy of Santina's, Lace: A History,
today on Amazon. Even with the exchange rates against us and postage, it was
cheaper than the copies available here in Australia.

The book is gorgeous and well worth getting. It weighs 2lb 11.25 oz (you'll
need imperial measurements for the USPS site).

Amazon.com are currently charging $30.60 for it i.e. $14.40 off the list
price. According to their website they charge $6.99 per parcel + $4.99 per
item to mail things to Australia. So the total will be $42.58, which is
61.35 Australian dollars (according to Ask Jeeves). It will save you a lot
to get it from them.

RE: [lace] V A Book and Postagess

2004-05-09 Thread Annette Meldrum
Dear Sue, and others,
I have ordered my copy from Amazon in US$ and it came to $38.90 plus
cheapest postage (4-5 weeks) $18 so with current exchange rates of 7.1 ? as
opposed to 4.1 ? that should be a better deal. It hasn't hit my bank
statement yet so can't give an exact value in Aussie$s. I should get it in
about 2 more weeks. I'm not surprised or disappointed to hear that there is
more needle lace than bobbin lace. When I visited the V and A last year the
needle lace I saw was stunning!

Subject: [lace] V A Book and Postagess

Hi All,

The current thread about postages charges reminded me that I had intended to
send a message to you all about the postal charges for the Lace book from V

A. This is of special interest to those of you at this end of the world!
(Oz,
NZ)

I ordered the book through the V and A site and had no problems, when I put
in
the option to have it sent to this part of the world the postage came up as
25
British pounds and like a fool I clicked to send the order! The book itself
is 30 pounds and the cost of postage didn't penetrate through to my one
brain
cell until after I had sent the order off.
