Richard,

Legacy programmers, in my view quite rightly, never releases details of its
future intentions, not even to their own staff.

You may like to look at Ltools at
http://zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/download-ltools/ which for pedigree pages
will clean up the code and convert it to CSS, thus giving many more options for
personalisation.

Help with all aspects of Legacy web pages is available from WUL:

Syncback if you create different backup sets for the different versions.
A bit off topic but it's a direction to try.

Dropbox saves versions going back 30 days but I haven't used it the way you're
suggesting so I don't know for sure.

I'm wondering why you want different versions. Sync means that the latest
version prevails on whichever device you're on.

Good Luck, I am entirely happy with the way I use Dropbox but your last post

do not amend either, otherwise Dropbox will get confused - this is not a
Dropbox problem, simply the way that Access works. Actually it is best never

There has to be an easier way than what you're doing. If it's only one
file that's being changed you can remember it, but if it's more you're
going to get confused, pretty much guaranteed.

You are right. I realzed it yesterday. I need to be careful not to edit on
both computers. Right now they are side by side so it's easier to forget. When
traveling it won't be hard at all and after I get my desktop email working
again, I won't need to keep my laptop set up. So it's just a temporary
temptation. :)

[LegacyUG] Source List Names

As a matter of curiosity, can someone tell me what “Source List Name” you
would give for the citation for the event described?

Event: Medical.
“ At a Court held for Berkeley County, [VA] the 21st day of April, 1778.

I don't think it matters what the Event is, what is important is that
YOU can find the Source in your list by remembering what Source List

words you think of to describe it? Will Books? William Mary College

Well, that's the point -- it doesn't seem to have anything to do with wills
or the military how Annap, MD, or the WM Qu got involved I have no idea,
esp as there is no date. But that's a help -- I guess I'll do

of the events I've entered have a + for them and some don't. What does
 the + stand for?

If you press F1 from any screen you will get the Help page relevant to
that screen. In this case, if you scroll down the Help page you will
find information about the Events/Facts section of the screen and it
describes the several columns. It tells you that the last one shows a +
when you have added a picture or an address to an Event.

Re: [LegacyUG] The + sign at the end of some event/fact entries

2012-10-27 Thread R G Strong-genes
Amazing what you find when you hit F1 when you are on that screen, see the
last line under The Events/Facts List:

From the Help file:

Events / Facts

You can add unlimited additional facts and events to an individual. These
can include things like occupation, graduation, immigration, awards,
ordinations, etc. Legacy comes with many pre-defined events like those
previously mentioned. You can use these and also add any new events you
need. To add an event click the Add button to the right of the Events box
(See Add or Edit an Event). To edit an existing event, first highlight it in
the list and click on the Edit button.

An event consists of an Event Name, Event Description, Event Date, Event
Place and an Event Note. Only the Event Name is required, but it may seem
meaningless without a date, place or comment.

The Events/Facts List has several columns:

Event/Fact - The name of the event.

Date - The date the event occurred. This can also be a date range for
events that occurred over time. See Entering Dates in Date Fields.

Desc/Place/Notes - The place where the event happened and the beginning of
any comments entered about the event. (A slash (/) divides the various
entries.)

Sources - An S is displayed in the column to indicate that one or more
source citations document the origin of the event.

Addition Information - A plus sign (+) is displayed in this column if
additional pictures or an address have been added to the event.

Re: [LegacyUG] Email with Symbols

They are artificial characters added by your email reader because it
does not have the correct symbol for that contained in the incoming
email. This is usually caused by differences in the character set the
user used in their email and the character sets installed on your computer.

A macro is programing language that is specific to a program. It helps
you automate repetitive tasks. For instance if I want to if I want to
apply a style to the 1st and 4th cell in multiple tables I will record a
macro then run it on all the tables ( I might have 200 tables). The
tables are how I set up the family group sheet.

The 'offending' emails are probably encoded using UTF8. Your mail reader

Thanks, Jenny, and others. I had somewhat figured out that it had something
to do with pictures but didn't know about the addresses.

That does bring up another question - at what point does the + then
disappear; do I only have to remove the picture to make it disappear or do I
have to save to make it disappear or does it only disappear after I have
closed down the program?

Your email client (I use Thunderbird) should have an option for
character encoding. Mine is set to:
Outgoing Mail: Western (ISO-8859-1)
Incoming Mail: Unicode (UTF-8)

This correctly translates and displays the characters correctly.

Western (ISO-8859-1) appears to be understood correctly by all mail
readers and the Unicode (UTF-8) appears to understand both, so far.

[LegacyUG] Gedcom of Direct Line Ancestors

2012-10-27 Thread Lynda SoRelle
Hello,

I am trying to create a gedcom of my husband's direct line ancestors to post on
a DNA site. I can only include birth and death date and location info of his
direct line (no other info and no other individuals). I do not want a report, I
want a gedcom file. I cannot figure out a way to do this, aside from laboriously
going thru every unwanted person in my data and deleting them (my file is VERY
large). I have tried tagging and ended up wiping out my entire file. I have
tried to create a focus group but my export includes all my file, not just
the individual and ancestors. I cannot view the focus group and so have no idea
what it may contain. I have seen reference to a miscellaneous search to see
the contents of a focus group but cannot find that button or word anywhere in my
software. I am totally lost. Anytime I search for something in the Legacy help
file it refers me to something that I cannot find, or which leads to another
reference to a button I cannot locate. I am not a new Legacy user, but am a
basic user. I do not use advanced functions in my daily entry of data. I am
using the latest build of Legacy.

I've always been puzzled by the strange characters too.
I *almost* never get them on personal emails and I exchange emails a lot within
the US and to/from Canada, UK, Germany - even umlauts translate correctly.
My email is set up to both send and receive in Unicode UTF-8 using Outlook 2007
using HTML.
However...
I subscribe to a number of list-servs ... I don't have that problem with most,
but I do have that pop up with some of the listservs, especially this and a
couple of listservs from Germany.
I've never figured it out and just resigned to accept it. I've passively
wondered whether it has something to do with email settings from emails
originating in different countries, or if something to do w/ translating back
and forth to/from plain text, or some strange interaction between the apple and
PC worlds, or some other of many potential reasons. But I just accept it.

I don't know if transcribe is the correct term. I gathered many
photocopies of documents on a recent trip and would like to transcribe them
into text files. I've tried Windows Voice Recognition but it takes longer than
typing (though I'm concrned about carpal tunnel ?)).

My question: When you transcribe, do you enter the spelling and grammar errors
in the original or correct the obvious ones? If the document is old, do you use
the old language or update it for modern readers? (adding a note to that
effect)?

Thank you.
Peggy

Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom of Direct Line Ancestors

2012-10-27 Thread Ron Taylor
Here's how it is done.1) Check the box Enable tagging options in
OptionsCustomizeGeneralTagging Options.  Click Save.
2) Navigate to the individual for whom direct line ancestry will be exported to
a GEDCOM so that person is highlighted (called the current individual).3)
Control-T to open the Advanced Tagging window.  It should show the highlighted
person from step 2 in the field just below Individual Tagging.4) Set the
Untag radio button and set Make changes on #: to a tag number that can be
cleared.5) Next Set the Tag radio button, keep the Make changes on #: tag
number that was cleared in step 4.6) Click on the Ancestors button.  The
individual highlighted in step 2 should show in the field just below Current
Individual.7) Enter the Number of Generations to include that will be
tagged.8) Set the Direct Line Ancestors radio button.9) If the export will be
to a GEDCOM, this step is unnecessary because the 3 boxes described will be set
again at step 18.  An export to another Legacy database will use the 3 boxes at
this step.  Uncheck the 3 boxes
just below that radio button titled Include Other Spouses, Include
Siblings, and Include Spouses of Siblings.  (If you wish to export complete
group sheets for all the direct line ancestors, then leave these 3 boxes
checked.)10) Click OK to have the designated ancestors tagged.11) Click
FileExport toGEDCOM file to open the GEDCOM Export window.12) Click the
Privacy tab and check the boxes as desired.  If you want all private items to
export, click the button Check All and it will set all the other boxes for
you.13) Click the Options tab.14) Select from the pull-down menu Produce
file for: the intended file format for the export.15) Select from the
pull-down menu Character Set: the intended character set for the export.16)
Set or check any of the remaining options for the export.17) Click the button
Record Selection then set the radio button 18) Set the radio button All
records with an individual tag of: and the tag number
from step 5.  Then uncheck the 3 boxes that were described in step 9 or check
them if desired.19) Click Close.20) Click Select File Name and Start
Export.21) Enter a file name that will receive the GEDCOM exported data.22)
Legacy will export the GEDCOM information to the file specified in step 21 and
then display a Message window that shows how many individuals and families
were exported.  Click OK.23) Use the exported GEDCOM file as desired.

RE: [LegacyUG] Email with Symbols

2012-10-27 Thread CE WOOD

I subscribe to many lists such as this, but this is the ONLY list where this
problem occurs. NONE of the other emails I receive from anywhere in the world
have this problem. This occurs only with this Legacy list. As mentioned many
times before, there are many problems with the company that Legacy deems worthy
to host its list. This is merely another one.

I've always been puzzled by the strange characters too.
I *almost* never get them on personal emails and I exchange emails a lot
within the US and to/from Canada, UK, Germany - even umlauts translate
 correctly.
My email is set up to both send and receive in Unicode UTF-8 using Outlook
 2007 using HTML.
 However...
 I subscribe to a number of list-servs ... I don't have that problem with
most, but I do have that pop up with some of the listservs, especially this
and a couple of listservs from Germany.
I've never figured it out and just resigned to accept it. I've passively
wondered whether it has something to do with email settings from emails
originating in different countries, or if something to do w/ translating back
and forth to/from plain text, or some strange interaction between the apple
and PC worlds, or some other of many potential reasons. But I just accept it.

I checked out the encoding on Pat Hickin's original post, and it was indeed
UTF-8. It appeared fine (no weird characters) in Outlook 2007, so I guess my
 reader handles UTF-8.

Despite that, like Ron, I still get the weird characters. For me, it appears
that it is in the original text quoted in replies where the person replying
had a newsreader that mangled the character set. I.E. once mangled, that text
will continue to be mangled on all future replies to the group quoting it.
