Why on earth not use the unique identifier provided by Legacy - the RIN.

I'm with you Jenny and have done it this way for ages now, the only
issue is you must be aware never to overwrite or alter the current RINs
& heaps of backups too of course.

For Census Sourcing, I use 12345-1871Census.jpg then I use the same
format for Birth, Baptism & Death sourcing.

For marriage I use the MRIN & identify it as 12456-MRIN.

It works for me, but of course once decided on this course of action
it's (in my case) probably too hard to change it.

Each to their own I suppose.

[LegacyUG] Legacy slow to start

2023-11-14 Thread David Cripps

Hi Everybody,

I have a strange issue with a brand new Desktop computer, wherein Legacy
itself might take 20-30 seconds to load at first start of the day.
It's quite disconcerting when it happens, especially as this machine
should be (and is) an absolute flyer.

My old desktop clunker was getting a bit long in the tooth, so the guts
of my upgrade is:

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700KF 3.40 GHz
Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2 NVMe
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home, Ver. 23H2, 64 bit
Legacy 9.0.0.443 with 10,000 names

I'm reaching out to see what others think of this, and I wondering the
obvious simple thing, like, is it an issue of a lack of memory ? Should
I double it to 64 GB ? Or make the RAM larger ?

The re-install of Legacy went fine, and without issue, and I continue to
carry on my research, do backups, and the odd bit of editing. As I said
after the first start of Legacy, all's well, and I can work away all day
if I like.

I thought there might be a slim chance this issue has been dealt with
before and resolved by a simple tweak, so I'd love to hear the technical
types throw their solutions my way.

Many thanks

It did work, and I use Libreoffice.
Yes I did see the row change, and okay to experiment with a separate csv

[LegacyUG] Finding all Cousins

2023-01-10 Thread David Cripps

I'm interested in producing a report that might show all my cousins.

I note I can go Reports >> Other Reports >> Relationship Report then
produce a CSV file and load that into a spreadsheet.
The previous answer from archives suggests I then sort the relationship
column; the trouble being I'm not much of a spreadsheet guru, and that
answer was a few years ago now.

I'm wondering if there's a better, perhaps easier way of doing this please?

Oh, I'm using Legacy 9.0.0.414

Sorry if this is trolling over old ground for some folks.

[LegacyUG] Can't install latest update

2022-03-31 Thread David Cripps
Reaching out for some advice, since I can't install the version

Now I have Win10 64 bit running and Legacy 9.0.0.393 is running
perfectly, but I decided to grab the latest update as I normally do, and
did that by going from Legacy Home >> Updates ( Download and install now)

During the install I get an error that says: "Could not load the DLL
library" "C:\Windows\User32.DLL" "The specified Module could not be found."

I should also mention that I have Norton 360 installed, so I right
clicked the Norton icon in the task bar and disabled "Auto Protect" and
"Firewall" and tried the install again, but the same error reappeared.

I'm suspecting Norton of course, but not sure how to tackle it and
wonder of others have already solved it and could advice me please.

[LegacyUG] Simple install question

2021-09-14 Thread David Cripps
It's many years since I've needed to download the Standard version of
Legacy, but have just done so to post of to a friend, along with some
data files and source info on a DVD.

When they click Legacy9Setup.exe on their computer, will it install
without a prompt for a password ? In the old days a password was used,
but can't recall what it was, sorry.

Just trying to avoid a few niggling issues when they try and install.

As an aside, I noticed in the first email from Legacy to assist in
Downloading and installing for the first time etc, the link supplied:
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/category/12/0/10/Install-Uninstall/
doesn't work.

[LegacyUG] Detailed Searching errors

2021-04-05 Thread David Cripps

Hello Everyone,

I'm using Legacy 9.0.0.384 on a Win 10 Pro system (to be exact Build
19041.vb_release.191206-1406) 64 bit.

Being pedantic, I wanted to know if I had any people with the CRIPPS
surname, who died in Tasmania, without any Source for that death.

So I used a Detailed Search with the following parameters:

Individual >> Death Place >> Contains >> Tasmania
2nd condition AND
Individual >> Source-Master Source >> Contains >> [left this blank]

I had selected "Clear List before this search," and I clicked "Create List."

A fairly straightforward query I would've thought.

The list didn't appear, except I received quite a few dialog boxes that said

ERROR
INDIVIDUAL '4661' was not found

The RIN number cycled through about 20 different numbers before the
search closed.

I just wondered if I've stumbled on to something, or perhaps I've
out-smarted myself and the last criteria is simply finding all people
who have no Master Sources created ?

Interestingly, I wrote down a few of those RIN numbers as the dialog
boxes scrolled through, and none of them are used RIN numbers within Legacy.

I did a File Maintenance, after doing a Backup, and did a:
Check/Repair
List Cleanup
Compact Family File

I think the Check/Repair only found one minor error, but the errors
still reoccurred.

I apologise if this problem has been dealt with in the past, but the
errors did alarm me quite a bit.

Many thanks
David Cripps in Tasmania

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting children - twins

Legacy has a function that allows you to change the order of children. With
the family involved open in Family view, right click in the list of
children and select Childrens Settings from the drop down menu. Doing so
should bring up a screen that has the word ORDER in the lower right-hand
corner with two arrows to the right of the word, Highlight either twin and
select either arrow to move the twin to the order you want them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding DNA results to Legacy

Thanks Elizabeth, and yes I do have the mtDNA certificate, however no
where on that certificate for example does it mention, name or give a
location number. For instance under HVR1 it gives 16298C and 16362C but
am I to assume that 16298C is Location 1 simply because it's named first ?

These numbers and letters are what you load into Legacy.
However, it is important to understand that Legacy does not provide you with
any means of using this data to sort out matches etc - it is simply a place
to record what tests have been done etc.

Yes, I'd assumed as much, and perhaps that's why I've not bothered with
it for a long while.

If you are looking for a program that will enable you to download and
compare DNA results with those of others, then there are a few specialist
programs that will allow you to do this.

I've used DNAPainter, however I confess to being a new-comer, although
the chromosome comparisons I understand, and I'm waiting to see some of
my remoter Cripps cousins get their Autosomal results back in to see if
we share a common and distinct chromosome.

THank you Elizabeth, I appreciate the reply.

Getting late here, so any replies of mine will be to'morrow now.

[LegacyUG] Adding DNA results to Legacy

2021-02-08 Thread David Cripps
This sounds like a terribly newbie type question, but how, practically
do I add my DNA results to Legacy within Legacy 9.0.0.368 ?

I realise, I must go from the Individual's Information Screen >> then
DNA Records, then add the specific test from the appropriate company.

Okay, let's assume I want to add my MtDNA results from FTDNA, for which
I can see is the Maternal Test I need to add. The sections are marked
HVR1, HVR2 & HVR3, for which each column is marked "Location 1,"
Location 2," etc etc.

My question is where do I find for example Location 1's result (and the
rest), since in FTDNA I can see no mention of this, at least for MtDNA
records.

I'm not explaining this too well am I ? So is there an explanatory
video from Legacy on this please ?

My memory might be failing me now, but I seem to recall there was a way
to copy and paste your results into Legacy, at least for the Y DNA results ?

Thanks - David

When I updated to the latest update, it is slow to bring up the list of names
when I click on "Name List". It shows all the alphabet for the list of names
and then the section where the detail etc is - all in little empty boxes as it
runs across my screen while it loads. I have done a check and repair, but that
did not help. I have a new laptop which is almost a year old now and it never
did that before this update. It is very annoying. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

One of the best can't-do-without free programs is IrfanView. It's a
graphic editor and opens all graphic files including PDFs. Download it
along with its add-ons, then use it to open your PDFs and save them as
JPG or whatever. It will also handle multiple page PDFs. It's also
great to join files together, such as back and front scans of photos or
multiple pages of documents. They can be joined horizontally or
vertically using "panorama image".

I'm a bit late to the party Gary, but I do the following from Win10:

(1) I most gratefully use a blindingly fast backup App called Bvckup 2
Pro, and do a general backup of say Legacy and anything else from my
Primary HD to the secondary drive.

(2) Bvckup 2 Pro has an amazing feature where you can run a batch file
after the program has finished. I use this feature to copy Legacy stuff
to two external drives, my Google Drive, and one USB 3.0 key.

Couldn't be happier to be honest.

Hope this helps others.

Just a question if you don't mind Henry.
I only have what's supposed to be a 12 Mbps connection, which is made up
of about 11.2 Mbps Download & only 0.84 Mbps Upload.
I only have a fraction of the number of individuals compared to you, yet
my backup to Google Drive, several external HDs, & one high speed USB
does take quite a few minutes to complete.

What is your connection speed please?

You see I'm already paying $70/month for this basic service in Australia
and as it suits my purpose I'm reluctant to pay more.

I might be swaying a bit off topic here, but my slow speed has dissuaded
me really from using the inbuilt Legacy Cloud Backup, so I use my own
batch file to handle the backups.

I jealously watch those on 100 Mbps of course, but for me that's only a
dream.

Perhaps when creating the Gedcom for this Worldconnect database a choice was made not to include source information, yet privately they may indeed exist, something the author might choose to share with you.  Failing that of course, you'll have to track them down yourself.

[LegacyUG] Uninstalling an older version of Legacy

2019-07-23 Thread David Cripps

I have an older version of Legacy (version 8.0.0.596) on a much older small
netbook computer.

Going overseas soon and wanted to remove all trace of the program before I go,
but am getting an error when I try and uninstall.
I'm told "Could not open Install.Log file."

The computer is running Windows XP Home at the moment.

The thing is that old, I only need it to send and receive emails and browse for
hotels when convenient.

Deleting the data files etc is no problem of course, but I want to remove the
program too if possible.

[LegacyUG] Uninstalling an older version

2019-07-23 Thread David Cripps
Title: Uninstalling an older version

I have an older version of Legacy (version 8.0.0.596) on a much older small netbook computer.

Going overseas soon and wanted to remove all trace of the program before I go, but am getting an error when I try and uninstall.
I'm told "Could not open Install.Log file."

The computer is running Windows XP Home at the moment.

The thing is that old, I only need it to send and receive emails and browse for hotels when convenient.

Deleting the data files etc is no problem of course, but I want to remove the program too if possible.

Just wondered if a solution is apparent to anyone ?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] video media

2019-03-01 Thread David Fisher
Hi
Didn’t know that about web pages but understand that now.
Am capable of coding an event to play the video. Pointed it back to vimeo.
Already done and working.
Prefer to load the avi without all the vimeo adverts myself and code so it can
be viewed on the web.
This I will work out.

My reason for viewing is I have a lot of family interviews which I would like
to view in the media folder.

Half the problem I will remedy myself, the other half I cannot get right.
Support has requested copy of the avi file.
Hopefully they will advise
Regards
dave

Web pages and all reports will not include anything except pictures.

Other media such as your video will have to added to the web page coding
by you so they can be played from the web page or opened by clicking on
a link. If you are familiar with coding web pages you can edit the
Legacy created file to add your own linking and coding to make the avi
file play.

The only thing that is a Legacy problem is your inability to open the
.avi file from the person's or event's media gallery depending on where
you have it linked.

Re: [LegacyUG] video media

2019-03-01 Thread David Fisher
Hi all
Tried everything. Just can’t get it to work.
Changed the convertor
Changed the media player to VLC

Video file shows up in media folder as a film reel icon
Just won’t open on double click or options tab- play

When you try and open in both methods the icon disappears. Only comes back
(icon) when you close and reopen.
Shows it is in the media folder again ready to be selected.

Tried to attach to an event. Created web pages and the event is named but does
not show the attached avi file.
Found it was not in the media folder so put it in myself
Repeated the above web page creation.
No luck
Very frustrated.

Is there a setting to link the player to legacy?
An options button or setting somewhere?

Anyone have a suggestion to get this right

Regards
dave

2019-02-28 Thread David Fisher
Hi
I think my problem may be my convertor
Originally it was a mp4 (vimeo)file that i converted first to avi and tested.
No luck

Now trying another convertor. May change to something simple such as mpg.file

I already have coded a button to open vimeo in an event, but i would like to
use legacy.
I will let you know if i get it right

Re: [LegacyUG] video media

2019-02-28 Thread David Fisher
Hi Cris

The avi is situated on my desktop. Plays perfectly on windows media player.

I open media folder, select video.

The load video file opens and the icon video for the .avi file shows.

I select it and the file name appears in the box , and i make sure the file
type is video files*avi. Is selected.

Select that opens a box with 2x options

1- copy the folder and link it to there no avi logo in the media folder

Try

2- leave the file there and link it to there. Avi is shown in the media folder
(icon with a film reel)

Double click to open and nothing plays

Hope this helps you help me?

dave

Well, I just copied a .avi file into a Video folder (new) in my /Media
folder, as I always do with JPGs. Then attached it to an event, marked as video
on the Add Media selection. Then, from the Media Gallery for the individual I
can run it by a double-click or from Options / Play.

This also seems to be the correct method and I am using 9.0.0.282. Per se,
I never allow Legacy to move or relocate my media, on the basis that I know
what and where they are.

Hi

Normally, you would only do that if the children were adopted or
otherwise, and legally, part of the family, and not just step-siblings.

The risk is that, without an explanation, they might be regarded as
part of the family when they actually are not. If you do it, make sure
that there is an event to explain it and set the relationship to parents
and child status to a suitable, or new, explanation.

Check the help file "Copying between Family Files.
It is simply a drag and drop function.

Thanks Cathy,

I was pleased to see your response, I was wondering what to do next.

Should I put my hand up to test run the beta version, or just sit on my
hands for the upcoming fix ?

If the fix isn't that far away then I'd be content to wait, however I've
just stumbled across a like minded researcher in the UK, who is
researching the exact same family, and after many years it is
frustrating to not be able to send off a Family Group sheet.

Thanks anyway Cathy

[LegacyUG] Cannot create Family Group Report

2018-12-29 Thread David Cripps
I've just upgraded to version 9.0.0.269 and after all these years using
Legacy I have my first problems with the program.

I want to create a Family Group sheet and after clicking Create Pdf I
get an error stating: /Individual "4091" not Found.  /I just checked,
and there is no RIN 4091 at all in my database, and more importantly
none with this number in the Group Sheet I want to create. Then another
Error: /Marriage not Found/.

Thinking I'd do a File Maintenance >> Check/Repair and it found nothing,
then trying the same Family Group generation again, I get the same error
result, and the Report won't generate.

I've done a potential problems report, and nothing there about a problem
with RINs !

As far as the error /Marriage not Found,/ from what I can see it
concerns MRIN 4317 and to the best of my knowledge I can see no issue
with the marriage entry, and the MRIN displays correctly at the bottom
of the screen.

My first thought is that I want to ditch 9.0.0.269 and go back one
previous version, so could someone please tell me where I can download
this, and is it a simple step of just installing over this newer version ?

Thanks

David in Hobart

[LegacyUG] Legacy and Mac

Just curious: Does anyone know if there is a planned version of Legacy that
will run under macOS?

I love Legacy but having to fire up Parallels and Windows 10 every time I want
to use it is a real pain.

That’s why I’m leaning more toward using Ancestral Quest. Although it’s a
Windows program, Incline Software wraps it in a customized version of WINE (or
Crossover, I can’t tell which). So it runs “natively” on my iMac.

[LegacyUG] Images in Reports

2018-09-12 Thread David Cripps
I have some images provided/scanned for me from a UK museum, the
agreement being of course that they are for my own private use only, for
which I happily agreed.  Six months ago I needed to use one of these
images to help the research and a published website promoting WW1
soldiers from Surrey.  Naturally I sought and received copyright
permission from that museum, and the Surrey researchers in turn
correctly attributed the photograph, so all was well.

My dilemma now is that I've been asked by another museum if I could
provide further reports (Family or Individual) on other members of that
same family, for which I will need further copyright permission.

So my questions are I guess:

(1) I notice in Chart Reports >> Individual Chart >> Report Options >>
Pictures >> Set Regular Picture Options >> Inline Pictures the "Include
Caption" choice is greyed out, which is perhaps planned for future
releases. This option would've been ideal for words such as "Supplied
courtesy of Surrey Museum,"  to appear as the caption directly under
that image.  I wondered if the Legacy folk reading this might know when
this option might appear in future releases please ?

(2) Is there a way to correctly attribute a photograph in a generated
PDF report from Legacy ?

(3) Just wondered how other users source their own photographs apart
from the Caption, Date & Notes when first adding the image I mean ?

Thanks

Dave Cripps

I like it, thanks Cathy.

Yes I admit I did get a bit over excited in the use of these tags, but
I've learnt my lesson I think.

Hi Cathy, [This time I'll hit Reply All instead of Reply]

Sorry I should've continued to explain.

I need one Individual Report, no trouble with that, but at the moment I
have one Event, amongst many many others, but this one particular event
is a personal Letter sent in 1916, and this obviously is marked private,
and I don't ever want it exported.

I'm being lazy here I know, but for this person I've marked every event
as Private, as it ensures the research stays with me.   Easy I thought,
just untag all the events privacy tag, mark this letter event as private
and then do the Report without choosing to export Private material.

The Sources don't worry me that much, as the Report is going to a
Museum, so they'll w ant to know how I know; It's only this one event I
want to stop.

So if my explanation has got any better, I wondered does Legacy allow me
to remove private tags from events in a kind of a Search & Replace ?

Cheers

[LegacyUG] Removing Event Private Tags

2018-09-09 Thread David Cripps
I'm using 9.0.0.26 version of Legacy, and I have a person with a large
number of events, all of which have the Private Tag turned on.

I've done this to make sure my events don't get exported when I do
Gedcoms, but I have a need temporarily to turn all these tags off, just
for this one person.

Yes I know I can do this manually myself and I've had need to do that in
the past, but I wondered is there a faster way of doing this; A bit more
automatic shall we say, easier on the fingers & eyes ?

Thanks everyone

[LegacyUG] have been unable to get location mapping function to work

2018-08-06 Thread David Paine
I have downloaded and installed Legacy 9.0.0.226.

I have tried unsuccessfully on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

I have downloaded and installed the geodata file.

Internet is permanently online.

I have been unable to view maps (neither by using “Map My Family” nor from the
Location master list) with my own gedcom imports and with the sample legacy
file.

If I select the master list “Geo-code” button and then select “geo-code all
un-resolved locations through Bing Maps”, I receive the message “Bing Maps has
not finished loading yet. Geo-coding of all locations is not available until
the map is loaded.”

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

will stop supporting it, as that would break a large number of applications,
including those developed and used by major businesses.

Conversion to the current Visual Basic .NET is possible, but it is not
backwards compatible and the conversion process is not possible for most
projects.--

A very good question Henk, and I'll keep an eye on the replies.

I'm tempted to say that most of us have information that wouldn't be the
remotest bit interesting to anyone outside of our own families, but then
of course I started thinking about all those events that I've marked
"Private," and that yes I suppose I have several things I'd like to
remain private.
I'm not paranoid, but I believe if you want true privacy, then only
User based encryption software will do it for you, and no I don't use or
need such a feature. Having said that, quite some years ago I did ask
the legacy folks if it might be possible to have encryption available
for some Events, rather than relying on the tick to make it private, or
the Open and closed [ ] brackets; My argument then was that people can
still open the file and read the contents.

I've not used the Legacy Cloud feature, favouring instead to use my own
Google Drive backup routine that has been working well for several
years, so I'm content to combine that with a couple of other backups and
settle with that.

Then of course if a foreign government wanted your information and had
the resources to tackle that task, what could we as average folks
actually do about it ?

Very very occasionally there are clashes with other programs that can cause a
list to look empty apparently. I've not seen this myself. Some get it on some
lists with TeamViewer running.

The other reason data goes missing is that for some reason you delete it or it
was Private data and you exported to a new file without overriding Privacy

Would appreciate other Legacy users checking your current file to see

I hope to check newer backups to see about when the data disappeared.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Program for Macintosh Computer - When?

I also use Ancestral Quest on my Mac. It’s a Windows program, but it’s wrapped
in a customized version of WINE. It runs as if it was a native Mac app.

Perhaps Legacy could take a page out of Incline Software’s book?

Also, if one must switch to a native Mac app, some would consider Reunion to be
the best. No interface to FamilyTree/FamilySearch, though.

[LegacyUG] GEDCOM photos not found by Legacy

2017-11-15 Thread David Delker
I'm new to Legacy and am still "test driving" the free Standard Edition to
see if purchasing the Deluxe edition is worthwhile. I exported a GEDCOM file
from MyHeritage (including all photos) and have loaded that file into
Legacy. Unfortunately, Legacy tells me that links to my 1677 photos "cannot
be found" and the "resynchronization" process does not yield any results.
Legacy tells me that the missing files have long, cryptic names such as this
one:

500736_695959jb14475i41a28c50.jpg

Can anyone tell me how to proceed to connect my missing photos that are
embedded in the GEDCOM file?

Thanks!

I too have ancestors with uncommon names from that period. I have treated

They were my first thoughts too Ian, and I was mollified a bit by
Legacy's new posting at:
http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/08/legacy-family-tree-has-a-new-home-with-myheritage.html

My concern is that at aged 64 years, I want legacy to still be around,
at least into my old age where I can say to my grandchildren, ok here it
is, now it's over to you.

Ancestry's resources easily tops My Heritage, so that is of a major
concern, but then as the above link states, FTM was flogged off to the
Ukraine.   Everything boils down to money I suppose, until we can get
software that'll write itself, but in giving us a healthy discount
(for registered Legacy users), maybe My Heritage is thinking beyond the
dollar.
Ancestry meanwhile is happy to make the money, but doesn't give
discounts to family tree contributors, my chief reason for sticking with
Worldconnect all these years.

I'll be happy to sit back and see what happens; realistically what other
choice do I have.

I'm interested in this topic though.

Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] Temple submissions

2017-07-09 Thread David Turley
Marlyne
Legacy will allow you to print cards with only the Baptisms and
Confirmations.
Go to your list of Reserved Temple Ordinances.
Select the individuals whose ordinances you want printed.by ticking the box
on the left next to their name.
When you have finished selecting the individuals, you will see 3 options
near the top of the screen.
Select Print, then select Print Family Ordinance Cards.
The next screen will allow you to select the ordinances you want printed by
unselecting the ones you DON'T want printed.
You should now see a screen that will show cards with only the Baptism and
Confirmation boxes empty.
Now select Continue.
You should now see a Print Request screen. Select Continue at the bottom.
To print them, select the printer icon on the far right side of the ribbon
at the top.
Now select Print at the bottom left. When you close his screen, you will be
asked whether or not the cards printed.
Good luck

[LegacyUG] Shared Event Sentence Definition

2017-06-21 Thread David Cripps
Hi Listers,

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, so please forgive me if
that's the case, but I've looked in the Legacy Help, User Guide, and
can't see a real answer to what I want.

Normally I'm not that fussed about generating reports for others and can
handle the Event Definition sentences, well enough to make my reports
presentable shall we say.

However I have a Family Group sheet (PDF), that is important to me, but
the male spouse of the family has quite a few shared events, like
Census, Directory, Memorial and Probate that display perfectly in the
Group Sheet for him, but the Shared Events for his wife and children
need work on the Sentence Definition to make the text look acceptable.
I can't see how to tackle this, or indeed wonder is it possible to
tackle this within Legacy, without exporting the results to a Word
Processor ?

I can of course do a capture of the incriminating text and paste here,
but that would be a graphic, so not the done thing to be honest.

When Editing the Shared Event for say the wife, I note the existence of
"Sentence Override (specific to this person's role)" and had a play
here, but still the report isn't acceptable.

I mightn't be explaining myself all that well, but wonder if someone
more clued up than myself might twig to what my problem is, or direct me
to more info please?

Many thanks

David Cripps in Tasmania

Hi Ron,

I haven't tried it, but why not try:

View >> Master List >> Location then search for your burial address and
under Options you can choose to tag that list.

Can't see why this shouldn't work for you Ron.

Re: [LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045 **SOLVED**

2017-05-06 Thread David Dearth
Thank you Bob, Robert, Ian, Pete and Cathy! There's a great group of
people on this list!

After much experimentation, the problem has been found. Ian, it appears
that you were on the right track. My anti-virus software was the
culprit. I am running Webroot SecureAnywhere on all of our computers
and devices. This is a popular (I think) program that I originally
purchased from Best Buy. This is the first time I have had any kind of
issue with it since 2009 when we first started using it.

If anyone else is using Webroot and having issues with Legacy, this is
what I have done... Open Webroot, then go to Identity Protection
settings (the gear icon). There is a tab there for Application
Protection. Choose this tab and you will see many of your programs
listed. The options are "Protect", "Allow" and "Deny". Legacy 9 was
set to "Deny", apparently by default. I changed it to "Allow", and all
of my problems disappeared! I tried many different things to track down
this problem, starting with the suggestions from you folks.

This one tweak fixed the following problems:

1. Error Code 3045 (not a Legacy error) on exit.
2. Error Code 3045 sometimes on startup.
3. Inability to paste text. This was a problem that I was not aware of
at the time of my first post. I could not paste anything that I copied,
which I used to do quite routinely. No field, including general notes,
would accept pasting of any kind. It just remained blank.
4. Backups not occurring. Backups are now working beautifully!
...Backup to Legacy Cloud seems to be working now too, but I'm thinking
that issue may be unrelated?? Just coincidence in timing perhaps.
5. Hints are working extremely well now. I did not realize before that
the Hint feature may have been hindered somewhat by this issue. After
changing this setting in Webroot, I saw orange dots (hints) popping up
everywhere! It was not like that before. Just a few here and there.

I am extremely happy with Legacy 9! Glad I upgraded from 7.5!

Anyone else running Webroot - check your settings!

Thanks a million!

Dave Dearth

Sherry has drawn a red line and is telling me that I have crossed it by
mentioning (not promoting, please) a non-Legacy product. I’m sorry about that
and will try to stay behind the red line in future, although my expectations on
a user group are certainly somewhat wider than described in the guidelines.

That post was written by me not to hype any other product, but purely to offer
a possible solution for my fellow users who are not getting the performance
they need from Legacy, based on my personal experience.

At the risk of being thrown off this list (on World Press Freedom Day of all
days), just allow me please to mention that the archive of this user group has
been discussing Unicode and Eastern European language support since at least
2006, with intentions of porting the software to a platform that supports
Unicode being given as answers back then and at several times in between.

So now we are 10 years on, support for Unicode did not happen with Legacy9, and
I guess the move to support Unicode is still „imminent“.
Could it be that users with a serious requirement for Cyrillic, Asian, Middle
Eastern etc. language support have long moved on to a different product?

Courteously, David

The group was not created to promote other programs or for questions about

can't find the answers or figure out something

The message about FTM (and your promo for AQ) should have gone off-list.

Think about it - if you were selling Coke products, would you like someone to
be promoting Pepsi on your website or mailing list??

The programmers are busy programming and don't follow the lists like they used
to.

In the Support section of the Legacy Home tab, you can send Support questions

Bob,

I think many in the LUG, like me, use Legacy as their main program for building
their family but also use other programs for the rare things Legacy cannot do.
As you said, they all have limitations. At the end of the day, all programs are
merely tools to be used how we want for our own purposes. A mechanic does not
limit his toolbox to only one spanner or one screw driver. For my needs,
Legacy would be as close as possible to perfect, if it had Unicode.
Unfortunately, just before publishing anything, I need to export my family file
to RootsMagic. It is not as versatile as Legacy and its interface / screens are
hard for me to use due to my dyslexia.

If Legacy does everything you want, you are very lucky but please do stop other
users from helping each other to keep using Legacy by suggesting ways around
its limitations. Legacy itself advertises supplementary tools such as charting
and mapping software.

Family Tree Maker 2017 may have what you want. It is overdue for release
(release was delayed due to bugs). I have never used it so I do not know if it
would suit you. Perhaps others in the Legacy User Group can tell you. My
impression is that it is very versatile. Like you, I really like Legacy but it
does not have a feature which is very important to me- Unicode. Unfortunately
for me FTM does not have Unicode either. Maybe you will have better luck.

My understanding is FTM is now fully owned by mackiev.com and independent from

Cathy,

Yes. I am not so proficient in Legacy nomenclature. I fully understood why
baptism and burial for which there may be documentation are reasonable
surrogates for birth and death respectively.

As for my aside about "cause of death", I was surprised by the fifth default
item in the family view screen. Why is it so important? BTW: RootsMagic
includes this item (also burial but not christening) in its default
customizable data entry screen.

It would have been nice if upon the establishment of a new Legacy family file,
we could be given suggested defaults and an immediate opportunity to substitute
events. Yes. I already know about the issue of reports' templates.

I mentioned my concerns to Legacy but they did not deem it a priority.

I am looking for a genealogy database program to recommend to collaborating
relatives. The Master Genealogist, my own primary program, is not suitable.
Legacy is my primary candidate but I am still reluctant to recommend it.

Thank you, Cathy, for the clarification.

I would be scared to click on „Auf Standardwerte zurücksetzen“ however, because
that sounds as if it is going to undo all my personal settings.
It is also not a translation of „Options for Default Settings“.
Maybe it’s a leftover from an earlier release in which you didn’t have this
function.
My suggestion for a better translation would be: „Standardeinstellungen
verwalten“.

see them. I guess the German translators wanted to emphasise that this button
accessed Reset options.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-04-28 Thread David Picken
Hi,

I have just installed Legacy9 and wanted to apply the trick described below.

I am using the German version, so maybe there is a translation problem here …

I assume the Customization screen is the one called „Anpassen“ in German:

At the bottom of that screen I have buttons called:

Speichern (Save), Abbrechen (Cancel), Auf Standardwerte zurücksetzen (Reset to
Standard Values), Hilfe (Help)

I don’t see anything that resembles „Options for Default Settings“ or „Save
Current Settings as User Defaults“.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks, David

Here is an extra tip for you. Sometimes updates will change a few of your
custom settings which can’t be helped because of programming changes but what
you can do is open the customization screen and at the bottom click the OPTIONS
FOR DEFAULT SETTINGS and then SAVE ALL CURRENT SETTINGS AS USER-DEFAULTS.
After an update you can go back to this screen and choose RESET TO
USER-DEFAULTS. If this is an upgrade, these settings won’t include any new
options that have been added but in an update it should capture everything.
This is available in version 8 and 9.

Disregard my post entirely Cathy, just call my original post a total
brain fade; I'd like to be more descriptive about my post, but the
Moderator would be a bit touchy I reckon. Dunno what came over me to
be thinking so outside the square, when I've been with Legacy for s
long, and I should've taken a break and made a cuppa. As it is, I'm red
faced enough, so I've gone off to serve some penance, and will print
out the new manual and sit down for a read.

Thank you though for one of your very familiar helpful posts Cathy.

I don't want to look back, I don't want to keep Legacy 8 at all & I'm

[LegacyUG] Legacy 9 default install directory naming structure

2017-04-22 Thread David Cripps

Hi Listers,
I've just successfully
purchased Legacy 9 + the pdf manual & downloaded both.

Before doing the
install I did a Check/Repair, found all was well, then did a
check of media paths, and found to my surprise a couple of
errors, which I've since fixed and double checked.
Yes I've done multiple
backups to play it safe, but I haven't as yet installed Legacy
  9 !
You see when I view my
old Legacy8 directory structure in Windows 7, it all hangs off
C:\Legacy8 and of course all the subdirectories flow downwards
from this.  My question is this: When I do the install, will
Legacy 9 install into this same directory ?

What would my best
course of action be please ?  Should I change the directory
name, or just curse my own pedantic nature and wish I'd just
chosen C:\Legacy to begin with ?

Thanks

Thank you Robert and Bob... yes I have tried rebooting. I have since
confirmed that this is indeed a MS Access (which I believe Legacy uses)
error code and not Legacy's (it is not listed in Legacy's error list
either). A Google search turned up many hits on this. I will investigate
further and get back with the group on what I find out.

[LegacyUG] V9 Error Code 3045

2017-04-22 Thread David Dearth
I have just recently upgraded to Legacy V9 from V7.5. So far I am loving the
program. However, I am getting error 3045 every time I exit. The exact
wording is "Backup of Family File has failed. Error 3045: Could not use
\Dearth.fdb'; file already in use. Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?".
Answering yes repeatedly results in the same message. It is set to backup
everytime I exit. Of course it is still in use, I am looking at the Legacy
screen when it is backing up (or trying to back up).

Also, uploading to the Legacy Cloud also fails. It seems to backup ok, then
shows 'disconnected' then a failure message.

I am running on Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit.

Perhaps I am missing something. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [LegacyUG] About Legacy9

2017-04-21 Thread David Picken
Cathy,

Thanks for responding.

I have no doubt that Legacy9 will be an improvement, but that doesn’t
necessarily mean that everyone needs to have it. It is not free-of-charge,
after all.

But your question is not really fair, because if I knew the details I probably
wouldn’t need to ask the general question.

As I see it, the fact about the new file format is NOT in the advertising
material, I only picked it up in the user group. That makes me suspicious, to
put it simply.
I just can’t know what else might be in there that they haven’t talked about
openly.
And I don’t want to get nasty surprises after using Legacy9 for a couple of
days or weeks.

The first questions to the Legacy folks would of course be:
Are you going to continue supporting Legacy8 for those who don’t really see the
need for Legacy9 in their daily activiities?
Is there a termination date set for such support?
And I do have a couple of questions specifically about the format change. Maybe
you or someone else in the group can answer these:
Will Legacy9 files have a different extension so that we can identify them
immediately?
If I don’t use new features such as hashtagging, will the new file stay
compatible to Legacy8?
Can I export from Legacy9 in Legacy8 format (in order to be able to send files
to people who haven’t changed)?
Again, thanks for writing.
Cheers, David

Am 20170421 um 10:15 schrieb Cathy Pinner <genea...@gmail.com>:

David,

What specifically do you need to know about?
The database has changed to accommodate new features like Hashtags. That's why
you can't use a Legacy 9 database in Legacy 8.
But the format on screen for old data hasn't changed.

There have been a few tweaks to old features.
eg in Detailed Search, the Where to look list is now alphabetical than in some
supposed logical order as it had grown so much the logic was lost.
eg you can now opt to see Ancestor Colours on Index View and Name List

The major differences are the new features which are advertised on the web
pages. I'm not sure what more you want.
I think Same-Sex marriage is missing from Geoff's video on new features. Can't
think of anything else.

2017-04-21 Thread David Picken
Thank you, Bob, for the encouraging report.

I thought I had read somewhere in this group that Legacy 9 files would not be
compatible with Legacy 8.
Is that not the case, then?

If that turns out to be true, I see problems coming up when supporting „casual“
users of Legacy, who will not be keen to purchase Legacy 9.

Thankfully they haven't changed the 'look and feel' of Legacy. Mine

[LegacyUG] Synchronizing Sources for Marriages

2017-01-28 Thread David Picken
Hello,

I am new here and new to Legacy.

When synchronizing my Legacy file with FamilySearch, I observe that only
„personal“ source information is included (typically birth & death).
But the sources for marriages (FamilySearch handles these as a relationship and
not as a person) don’t appear to get synchronized.

Am I doing something wrong or have I simply not found the right function yet?

Many thanks for your help and advice.

[LegacyUG] Relationship not showing

2016-12-08 Thread David Cripps

In Legacy 8 I've
noticed a niggling issue that bugs me every time I look at the
Family View screen and notice a relationship not displaying at
  all.
Let's call this person
Melissa, and I've been corresponding for several years and her
New York born father quite correctly shows up as my 4th
Cousin.  The trouble is Melissa shows no relationship at all
when in fact she should display something !
Dunno how to tackle
this at all, so anyone with some ideas, I'm all ears.

I've tried unlinking Melissa and then linking again, but that
achieved nothing, & ditto also for running a
Maintenance/Repair on the database.  If it's any sort of a
clue, her father had two relationships, Melissa being a
product of the first, and then a second when her father
provided Melissa with two step-sisters.   The name of the
first "wife" is unknown, and it's a touchy subject to ask, so
for the moment I've just called her "Unknown."
I have other 5th
Cousins in the database showing up without issues, so this has
  me stumped to be honest.

    Fingers crossed.
