Can you move the rear brake lever freely? I don't remember if it was

I replaced the square with a round headlight to go LED. Worked great, with

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Turn signalcancel unit

2019-10-11 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
On my 700S the lever doesn't stay on the side the indicator is active on.
To cancel, I have to nudge it into the opposite direction. So, to blink
right I shove the lever to the right, and the right indicator starts
blinking. But when I then release the lever it immediately snaps back to
the middle. It's a little annoying since I have to remember which direction
to move the lever to cancel. Anyone know how to fix that?

Thanks,

If you have good tire irons and you're a proud graduate of the Youtube

But $200...ouch! Anybody know a less expensive source? Might want to do our

Looks good. Also use some contact cleaner (i.e. CRC QD Electronic Cleaner).
Could definitely be the ignition switch. In fact, that's where I'd have

I’d measure the voltage at each switch (on/off at the right handle, high/low at
the left), on either side of switch to see at which station it’s interrupted.
Could it be a ground issue?

Good! Just trying to think of stuff I sometimes overlook. So are you getting
good voltage at high/low beam switch? That and the starter switch seem to be
exposed to the elements the most, and see the most mechanical use. You could
also hot wire it at the switch and see if that does anything.

That is exactly what we had on the 650. 60-65 MPH: no problem. Go faster and
the bike dies. Rather suddenly on our bike, just enough time to hobble to the
side of the freeway. After having taken out that inline fuel filter I rode it
over an hour at 70+ MPH without a problem. Well, with one exception. We were
getting the daughter back to the college, wife and her in the car following me
on her bike. Bike dies shortly after hitting the freeway. Damn!! - I thought,
taking out the fuel filter had not fixed the problem! Until I realized the fuel
shutoff valve was turned off. Bloody beginners! The ladies in the car got a
good laugh out of that one.

Hi Harold,

Funny, didn’t know we had someone on this list so close here. That blue bike of
yours is much nicer than what I have, or gave our daughter. You’ve seen my
postings here for less than a year. June last year my daughter and I took the
beginner’s class - in Oregon City. The daughter rode once from Portland to
Corvallis, then to and from a wildlife place near Corvallis three times a week
- and nowhere else. In a way I’m glad, less chances for her to get hurt. But
now another student talked her into taking the bike out for a ride this
Saturday, with his buddies. Maybe she can learn from the “big boys”! :)

I’ll give you a call.

Cheers,

Darin: unfortunately I don't know as the fuel filter came with the bike.
Never had an issue with it around town and even driving backcountry roads

freeway.

Yeah, I'd like to add an inline filter as well, but for now, both the 650
and the 700 have none. I bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014C81R2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8=1
 but
didn't realize how big it is. Still, if I can get it in I'll try it out on
the 700. This filter is more than double the size of the one that choked
the 650.

Kyle, do you use no inline fuel filter then, or did you find a way to install a
larger one? I had bought this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014C81R2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8=1

but it was just a little too large for the 700S. It actually might fit with a
more flexible fuel line. I might give it another try. Having a 15 micron filter
would be nice.

hours. The carb body I soaked in Pine-Sol overnight, and then washed it down
several times with first carb cleaner, then brake cleaner. Lots of compressed
air. I have not used Seafoam since the carb job, and I’m using e-free gas
exclusively. What seems so weird to me is how it snaps from being abysmally bad
to running pretty good for the freezing temps we have here currently. Smells
like something mechanical.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Carbs clogged...again??

2019-03-05 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Yikes, Arthur, did you slaughter a pig or what? I don't think my tank is
rusted, but it's possible. The petcock sump is clear, and all 4 cylinders
are firing. And I think I can rule out the 5 gal container as source of
contamination after realizing I had used it for the 650 as well, and that
one has no carb issues.

Mine is a bit of a cantankerous old lady it seems: today she's idling
alright even after pulling the choke. Took her for a spin, and she's
running fine. Yesterday she died three times during my commute to work,
sputtered and coughed during acceleration and died immediately when easing
up on the choke. Today I grudgingly took the car into work, and she decides
to better snap into shape, lest she be left at home again tomorrow. The
carbs do need balancing, I'll do that next. But I have no idea what's
really going on with Mademoiselle.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Carbs clogged...again??

2019-03-04 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Hi all,

My post carb clean bliss lasted 40 miles. Back to the before-behavior of
needing choke to run, and idling at 3k after the engine warmed up. I guess
it could be rust in the tank. There was some reddish residue in one carb,
but the others had none.

Is there anything else that could cause this behavior:

Cold engine, full choke, starts right up
Warm engine: needs full choke and idles at 3k-4k. The idle screw I had set
to around 1k when the engine was running fine after the carb cleaning.

The only other thing I did was adding an inline fuel filter. I could take
that out for a test.

Thanks!

[Nighthawk Lovers] 700S: which petcock repair kit?

2019-03-04 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Hi,

I used KL's kit # 18-2701
 to repair my
700S petcock, but it's still dripping in the Reserve position. Opening up
the side with the handle revealed a deteriorated rubber gasket. The one with
the round holes in it. Kit # 18-2701 only repairs the vacuum membrane. I
can't find the part number of the rubber part with the 3 round holes on the
handle side on the microfiches. It looks a bit like the left lower rubber
part in this picture

.

Anybody know which repair kit to use for the handle side of the 700S
petcock?

Thanks,

Holger

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: 650SC taken over by daughter

2019-02-27 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
"My new riding partner” - ha! I’m as new to it as she (we took the basic riding
class together). She’s been out with the bike a few times, and has NOT dropped
it again. She says she feels more confident handling the bike now, so I’m
hopeful. I’ll try to lower her bike some, nonetheless.

I should tell the story how she dropped the bike (twice) on the day we drove to
her college town. So we finally got geared up and went to the local gas station
for the good stuff (e-free). While there, my mother-in-law drives by and waves
to her grand daughter. Johanna (the grand daughter) turns around in her seat to
wave back…and drops the bike! Super mortified, we head back home to switch
clutch lever (I got the broken one), and I question the whole trip. Later, when
we arrived at her town, frozen stiff, I went into the wrong parking lot, and we
had to back out. I was just saying “Don’t drop it!” - before she lay flat. But
I love (as a father) that she hasn’t given up. That’s what counts in my book.
And I’m getting better welding clutch levers.

More than you ever wanted to know about this family.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Starter Solenoid plug melting

2019-02-22 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
I’m new around here as well, but from other vehicles, if electrical insulation
melts, it usually means there is a short right where the damage is found. If
you had an issue elsewhere in the system that causes over-current, you’d either
have a fuse pop or you’d see melting elsewhere. You found melting at the same
spot twice, so that’s where your cause is, nowhere else. It’s most likely crud,
stray strands, or exposed wires that are moved together, that shortens the
circuit right there, which creates the heat that damaged the wires or connector.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: 650SC taken over by daughter

2019-02-18 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Mark, thank you for your thoughts. I think you’re spot on, and I’ve seen
similar scenarios play out in other sports. The desire to get the most bad ass
gear, then not feeling in control and losing joy and interest.

Both my daughter and I are new to motorcycle riding. We took the basic class
together last year. Neither of us need bad ass, but I was hoping to get her the
smallest machine she can take on the interstate to cruise home to her parents
(80 miles away). I rode that route home on I-5 this morning first time, and if
it wasn’t so cold (32ºF), she can do it on the 650 and its windshield.

I was surprised she didn’t throw the towel when she dropped the bike the second
time. Resilient little beast. I let her know we can find her a smaller bike if
she can’t handle the weight of the 650. It’s mostly her short legs that are
challenging, I think. Maybe I can find a different rear suspension. I’ll try to
catch the moment she doesn’t want to ride it anymore because it’s just too
much.

Very much appreciate your viewpoint.

Thanks,

[Nighthawk Lovers] Installation of the rear wheel

2019-02-15 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Hi,

Quick question: when I re-installed the rear wheel after mounting a new
tire, the manual says to undo or loosen the "final gear case attaching
nuts". But it didn't identify those nuts, so I skipped this step. But after
installation I am noticing more friction in the wheel, in comparison to the
650SC standing beside it.

Are those the nuts:

Also, is it important to have them undone while installing the wheel? If
so, I'll redo the installation.

In other news: I received the front fork studs and they are perfect.
Installed, no problem. Also installed the cleaned carb for the 650SC and
she is running fine. Smells like wintergreen oil though. :)

Thanks!

Holger

This is on the 700S.

In other news, the tires (Battlax) arrived, and are mounted. I couldn't
figure out the zip tie method, but they seem much more flexible than the
Kenda, and mounting the traditional way was pretty easy actually.

The stud has been sitting in PB Blaster for a while, will try to get it off
later tonight. I think you guys are saying it's a right-hand thread. To me,
that makes sense: that way you'd tighten the connection with the nuts
during installation, not loosen them.

Thanks for all your help, made all the difference here!

Ha! UPS would have dropped off the same tires for the same year/type bike
today, if there had not been a slight dusting on the road yesterday, at which
point everything dissolves in to chaos here in Portland, OR.

It’s funny how we all call them Battle Axe, when the actual name is Battlax.
Bridgestone missed an opportunity to give a great name to great tires. Which
turned out to not matter at all since the customers just ignore the botched
name and use the great one. Lol

There has been enough friction in the cables on my 650 that the spring
wouldn't close the throttle. Having the "push" cable saved my day. And I'm
getting ready to hand this machine to our 20-yo daughter as her first bike,
so safety is important. Already pretty freaked about her riding this thing.
She's such a tiny person, that bike looks like a monster with her on. But I
got a windshield for it on Sunday, that'll help.

If that was my bike, yeah. Thanks for letting me know.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Where to get replacement throttle cables?

2019-02-04 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
BTW, since there was a discussion lately about friction in the throttle
cables. My throttle cables had too much friction to pull the throttle back
to idle. I used cable lube liberally, but that didn't help. From what I can
see, they are routed correctly. Interestingly, with the tank removed they
work perfectly. But the tank pushes them into a position that adds just
enough friction that it won't go back to idle. Here's a little video to
demonstrate that: https://photos.app.goo.gl/cLpskX7ECiaNsnmm6 . Maybe hard
to spot on first watch, but I am pressing the throttle cable to the frame
as the tank would, if it was installed. Then I release them, and the
throttle snaps back to idle.

I think there is just enough hardening of the housing and/or corrosion/gunk
in those old cables to have too much friction, and it can't be fixed with
lube.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Where to get replacement throttle cables?

2019-02-04 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Hi,

I want to replace the throttle cables on our '83 Nighthawk 650SC. Last
October I ordered a set from eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/371977374042 ),
however, they don't have the correct length. I found another set offered at
Amazon, but from the description, they are also incorrect. Here is what I
measured:

*Pull*
 Housing (old): 925mm, 36.42"
 Housing (eBay): 1130mm, 44.49"
 Play (old): 100mm, 3.94"
 Play (eBay): 110mm, 4.33"

*Push*
  * Housing (old): 925mm, 36.42"
  * Housing (eBay): 1110mm, 44.70"
  * Play (old): 130mm, 5.12"
  * Play (eBay): 110mm, 4.33"

Total play (old): 230mm
Total play (eBay): 220mm

Here is the set on
Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Reproduction-Throttle-Cable-Set-Nighthawk/dp/B01MVAQ9BA
They have these measurements:

*Pull*
Cable Overall Length: 1207mm, 47 1/2"
Play: 114,3mm, 4 1/2"

*Push*
Cable Overall Length: 1219mm, 48"
Play: 104.8mm, 4 1/8"

The overall length doesn't seem to matter that much, but of course the free
play is critical. I'm missing 10mm of free play on the "pull" cable to
install it.

Anyone know of a better source for those cables?

Thanks,

Holger

(pretending we're still on tires) I think I'm going with Kenda Kruz like I
did for the 650. There were a few thumbs-up on the Nighthawk forum for
those. I can get them for around $180 for the pair, and if I mount them
myself it's $180 vs. $380 for the Michelins. I'm just not going to do any
racing or other hair-on-fire stuff...just commuting to work and the
occasional ride out into the country. Found some youtube videos on mounting
tires with zip ties - will that give a try after my cheapo tire irons
failed miserably on my attempts to mount the Kruz's for the 650 (or maybe I
failed miserably, but the HF tire irons bent like wet spaghetti).

The air filter is stock. The previous owner read a forum posting about
adding those washers and tried it out.

OK, that's good to know, thanks for letting me know. I'll eventually clean
and tune the carburetors, so I'll get to the washers then.

Post your progress please. Always good to see how others attack the same
thing. Can't ever compare my stuff with your level of workmanship though!
The hand rail looks gorgeous!

Did that. Sat there on the ground and pointed the laser thermometer at the
pipes like a teacher at students to report their answers. The temps
compared pretty closely - good!

Arthur, really appreciate your encouragement and support! I'll check the
spark plugs.

First order of business is fixing a seeping petcock. Repair kit on its way.

Slowly getting used to the steering.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: LED headlight bulb for a 700S

2019-01-28 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Wow, thanks for all the responses and advice! The bike was dropped by one
of the 3 previous owners, and the guy before me repainted it with those
blue flames. I have so little experience, I'm not even qualified to say how
it runs. The engine runs fine, idles nicely and I'm happy that it doesn't
have the timing chain rattle of the 650. The steering I don't love yet, but
that's probably me, rather than the bike. I like the seating position (I'm
6'3") better than on the 650. And I love that you can remote the seat. I
will be building a luggage rack for it, so I don't have to carry my stuff
in a backpack. Something I can click my Ortlieb bicycle bags into. :)

A brief look under the cowling confirms what you guys are saying. Yet, I
really would like that 3000 lumen. I installed an LED headlight in the 650,
and man, it's super bright and people do take notice. I'm adding a light
bar to both bikes as well. After years of riding a bicycle in traffic,
anything to get noticed.

The history of the bike...I bought it from the third owner. He bought a new
700S in 85, sold it later, but loved it so much, he bought this one many
years later. He has not replaced it with a super loud, massive bike (forgot
the name), which had flames on it from the factory. lol The bike was
advertised on offerup.com for $1350, and he hasn't sold it for several
months. The photo wasn't very good on that ad. As usual, he got the
standard low ball offers. I eventually got it for $1100. Almost three times
of what I paid for the 650, but it runs and I can ride it to work right
away.

The previous owner has put some washers under the needles. I'm going to
reverse that. I want it stock for best possible fuel efficiency.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 650SC vs 700S for a tall rider

2019-01-20 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Thanks, Dave. Do you mean '82 and before or '91 and later? Interestingly,
we looked at a 650 for sale yesterday and the seller, an ex marine in his
70' with "titanium knees" was restoring an '82 750 because his knees
wouldn't tolerate riding the 650. He wasn't a tall guy either, so I'm not
quite understanding the geometry here.

I hesitate to go up with engine size from 650 because of fuel consumption.
Around town I am getting >50 MPG on the 650, and fuelly.com indicates quite
a bit more consumption for the 700 and 750. Maybe I can hypermile a 750 to
happiness as well, I don't know.

[Nighthawk Lovers] 650SC vs 700S for a tall rider

2019-01-20 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
I have a question for those that have ridden both: Is there a substantial
difference between the 650SC and the 700S for a tall rider? I am 6'4" and
have a 650SC that I'm currently use to commute to work, but soon plan to
hand over to our daughter. There is a 700S for sale, but it's a bit of a
drive to see her, and I'd only be motivated to do that drive if the 700S is
a better fit for a tall person. The 650 is great around town, but I think
it might feel a bit crouchy on a longer trip.

Thanks!

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Happy to be part of the group!

2019-01-17 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Just to give you a data point: I'm completely new to motorcycle riding and
picked up a 650SC upon recommendation from a friend. Eventually I am going
to hand it to our daughter, who is also new to the game. She lives 70 miles
from us and I wanted a machine that is safe enough for her to take on the
freeway. I'm pretty comfortable with the weight of the 650 and think the
daughter will also be able to handle it. I don't think I want her on the
freeway with something that weighs considerably less.

That said, I dropped the bike today. Lost footing on the sidewalk where I
park it at work on a metal cover. It was rain slick, and I just couldn't
prevent the bike from going down. Broke the clutch handle. No additional
damage (other than to my pride!). No problem getting her back up. Lesson
learned.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Engine rattle noise - what could it be?

2019-01-16 Thread Holger Selover-Stephan
Hi,

There is this slight engine rattling noise on my '83 Nighthawk 650SC. I
recorded it after a 30 min ride (so the engine was at
temperature): https://photos.app.goo.gl/WpH2bu4Jz4jTRU7R9

Any idea what that could be?

I bought this machine last year and got it running in December. Put 300
miles on it. This is my first-ever motorcycle, loving it!

And yes, I still need to clean and tune the carburetors. But I'm getting
~50 MPG on
it:
http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/honda/cb650sc_nighthawk/1983/shadowbrush/886051

, so I wasn't very motivated to tear into it.

Thanks!
