Hi! You need to like dogs for this one. http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/pictures/peso/recent/bigtongue.html I takes a long tongue to enjoy this kind of a bone, right? ;-) I decided to do my own full moon picture tonight. I don't know why. This was shot with the K10 behind the A600/5.6 and 2XL teleconverter. The camera was mounted to the Wimberley head on the Zone VI Standard tripod, but I decided to leave shake reduction on anyway. This is a bit of a crop, but not much. http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/pictures/peso/recent/fullmoon.html Bill, did it occur to you that you could have made two shots - one with SR and one without and compare results? RE: Bag for GFM Outing
The backpack style are not convenient to work out of. Conversely, the over-the-shoulder style are not convenient for carrying. I have 3 bags which I used most often: Domke F2, LowePro Street Field Reporter 300, and LowePro SF Rover AW backpack. The F2 is good for when I need to carry 2-3 SLRs around. I've used this a lot when abroad and it works very well - it's my favourite bag. I used to have a backpack harness for it, which made it convenient if I had to carry the thing for any great distance, but that was stolen. I use the Reporter 300 when I'm carrying 2 Leicas around, and can work out of it quite well. It also attaches quite nicely to the handlebar of my bicycle as a bar bag, so I use it for short rides. The backpack is useful if I'm going for a long walk, or travelling. I used it when I travelled around South India, but I found it rather inconvenient to work from, so I stopped doing that. The problem with bags is that you fill them up, and they weigh a ton. So I prefer not to use any of them if I can avoid it, and would rather carry the cameras over my shoulders and keep the necessary bits and pieces in a pocket or belt bag. This forces me to minimise everything and keep the weight down. I now prefer to work with 2 bodies and 2 lenses, so I don't have to change lenses. I keep film or other similar stuff in the map pocket of my shorts or trousers, and a light meter in my shirt pocket. Usually there's no need to carry anything else around. -- Bob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Walter Hamler Sent: 04 January 2007 00:12 To: pdml@pdml.net Subject: Bag for GFM Outing I'm a fan of photo vests as well. I will check to see if the camera store carries them as I don't remember seeing any there. What about the backpac style bags. Are they useful to work out of or would they be a pain to access routinely? I guess I just need to take my gear down to the store and start stugging bags to see what fits and what doesn't. I've only used simple, non-dedicated flash units with the *ist DS or K10D to date, other than built-in flash. On the other hand, P-TTL does a terrific job of balancing ambient and flash exposure properly. For me, I would not buy a dedicated flash that wasn't fully compatible with the K10D at this point. Otherwise I stick with the Sunpak 383, which is a lot cheaper than dedicated flash units of the same power class. I've had very good luck with my Vivitar 285 and although it's very large, cumbersome, and doesn't swivel, it does have another stop of power than this one. With TTL, I especially like the way the camera effectively works the way it should WRT metering with pre-A lenses. Set to 'M', set shutter to 1/180, set aperture as desired and fire... no half-accurate GB/AE-Lock button metering kludge to deal with. As far as I've been able to tell, the TTL metering isn't dead-on consistent. With my K50/1.4, there's probably 1 stop difference between the end exposure at f/2 vs. f/11 or so (larger apertures overexposing). Probably due to the angle of light hitting the sensor and bouncing to the TTL flash sensor? Anyway, no less accurate than the Vivitar 285's averaging on-flash sensor WRT shadowy subject against white walls, etc. So just to clarify... the -DS manual stating that P-TTL NOT working with A (or pre-A?) is a typo? They all look quite good Bill. First is the best though. I think they look much better than the one you posted yesterday. For example, look at the upper right part of the moon, in these new pics, you can see the small craters clearly, in the previous attempt, you cannot. rg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: While the fellas were out for their evening constitutional, I looked at the heavens and saw a very clear sky with the moon in a location that I could take pictures of it easily. So, I set up the rig again, and went about photographing it again. This time, I set the focus most carefully, and used a cable release on the camera, along with the 3 second delay. Then, I decided to ramp up the ISO to see if I could get some noise. There are three shots of the moon on this page, the top was shot at ISO 100, the middle at ISO 400, the bottom was shot at ISO 1600. Again, this series was shot with the A600/5.6 with the 2XL converter mounted. I attempted to process each file as close to identically as I could, though I gave the ISO 1600 file less sharpening as it was showing noise at that point. http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrobb/pictures/moon/moons.html Anyway, as a technical experiment, it seems successful, as a photograph, the subject line says it all. Re: Bag for GFM Outing
Walt, I have a Tamrac Velocity 5, which was recommended by several list members. It only has room for one body if you're going to be carry extra lenses. If you're carrying a second body you would have to remove the body in the bag to get to your lenses. The plus side is that in addition to the shoulder straps it also has a built in waist band. Plus, the flap can be opened toward you or to the side, which is quite nice. But based on carrying two bodies I don't think I would recommend it. I'd like to offer another recommendation for the Domke F2. Mine's an old beater, but it's holding together nicely. There is room for two bodies with small lenses attached plus four center compartments for more lenses and a flash. It has two front compartments, two end compartments, a rear compartment, and some space inside the top flap. You can access all of your gear from the top without having to remove anything. I have noticed two drawbacks. If your bodies have long lenses or zooms attached it can be hard to remove them. A possible solution would be to move the center dividers to one end and only carry one body in the bag. The bag is not rigid, so it will take on a banana shape when carried with the shoulder strap. It's much easier to get to your gear if you can support the bag from beneath. Kneeling down and putting the bag on your knee will do the trick. Get the backpack staps for those long walks. Re: Bag for GFM Outing
I have a modest size Beseler sling bag, tried a Domke and a Tamrac as well. I've looked at the Lowerpro 200 AW. For some uses they are convenient, but for most I find them rather awkward to work with. i have a Lowepro CompuTrekker AW, which is a great bag when i want to carry a ton of gear and the computer, get through airports, etc, and have another rollaway already to deal with. I find it a major pain in the butt to use for actually working out of ... probably better if you tend to hike out into the wilderness a long ways and then do some photography, but I don't do that kind of thing very often if at all. Another bag I have for travel is a Pelican 1514 case. That's my preference for when I'm carrying a lot of gear and only a little travel clothing as it is a hard rollaway that fits nicely in overhead luggage carry on. It is a perfect storage case for the Pentax 645 kit that is on loan to me (camera, four lenses, two film inserts and a few spare rolls of film just about fills it...). But I never use any of these big cases for actual shooting. They're more useful for storage/stowage while traveling. A good, compact shoulder/hip bag is much more useful for shooting, for me. RE: style change
I agree. I recall that when I was shooting a lot of motorsports, everyone hung their cameras around their neck. Most used more than one, and when loading film, a neck strap was essential. A good strap places the camera within easy reach and there is never any concern about the strap slipping off a shoulder or coming off your hand. I think neck straps fell out of fashion, because they became a symbol of the geek tourist photographer. I think that other than as a fashion statement, they are far superior to every other means of supporting a camera. Bag for GFM Outing
Thanks for all the responses. I got enough good input to go to the store this AM and found a ProMaster Sling Bag. It will hold all my lenses, even the 350mm T-Mount, and the second body if necessary. I likes the combo of over the shoulder/backpack, with the waist belt it stays in place and the feel is better than just a shoulder bag. I suspect that in actual use I will carry both bodies with lens attached, and only the spare lenses, accessories in the bag. This bag is much smaller and better built than my old shoulderbag, so I think I will like it a lot. See you at GFM in June! Re: style change
I always considered them a necessary evil ... they always got in the way. Nothing to do with style or habit. I hate having *anything* hanging from my neck or even from my belt. When I need a place to set the camera aside while changing lenses, I either put it on a table or hang it from the wrist strap using a carabiner on the shoulder bag strap. (I wear the shoulder bag with the strap across my shoulders and use a belly-strap to keep it on my back when walking or bending ... hate the bloody things flopping about.) Film? What's film? Only film I've touched in four years has been 120 film, and that's pre-loaded onto film inserts for the P645 when at home. When I run out of loaded inserts, my shooting is usually done. ;-) G On Jan 4, 2007, at 8:42 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I agree. This straps getting in the way is very much a matter of habit. If you are used to have it around the neck you will automatically protect it from branches and other stuff when needed. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: Comparison/DA 70mm FA 77mm
Scott Loveless wrote: If you're not shooting any film, the DA70 is a better option (smaller, less expensive, just as good). Otherwise, the 77. Maybe, just maybe, this will result in a few more 77LTDs on the used market. I doubt that. The 77 Ltd is one of those cold, dead fingers lenses. :) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: PESO - Chimping
Snow with a blue sky above always images with a blue tint and throws that blue tint onto everything else. I usually reduce the blue a little bit: our eye tends to filter it out where the camera just records it.
