Could you explain how you measure the exposure time in such a shot? Is it

Could you show an example of a failed shot with a Pentax or other DSLR?

The first humble success after two years of unsuccessful attempts with
various cameras and lenses which all failed miserably because of all the
light sources inside the frame and immediately above.

Later this year we'll get the colours right so it won't have to be
converted to b/w. ;-)

I decided to do my own full moon picture tonight. I don't know why.
This was shot with the K10 behind the A600/5.6 and 2XL teleconverter. The

I decided to leave shake reduction on anyway.
This is a bit of a crop, but not much.

Bill, did it occur to you that you could have made two shots - one with

While the fellas were out for their evening constitutional, I looked at the
heavens and saw a very clear sky with the moon in a location that I could
take pictures of it easily.
So, I set up the rig again, and went about photographing it again.
This time, I set the focus most carefully, and used a cable release on the
camera, along with the 3 second delay.
Then, I decided to ramp up the ISO to see if I could get some noise.
There are three shots of the moon on this page, the top was shot at ISO 100,
the middle at ISO 400, the bottom was shot at ISO 1600.
Again, this series was shot with the A600/5.6 with the 2XL converter
mounted. I attempted to process each file as close to identically as I
could, though I gave the ISO 1600 file less sharpening as it was showing
noise at that point.

Anyway, as a technical experiment, it seems successful, as a photograph, the

RE: Bag for GFM Outing

2007-01-04 Thread Bob W
The backpack style are not convenient to work out of. Conversely, the
over-the-shoulder style are not convenient for carrying. I have 3 bags
which I used most often: Domke F2, LowePro Street Field Reporter
300, and LowePro SF Rover AW backpack.

The F2 is good for when I need to carry 2-3 SLRs around. I've used
this a lot when abroad and it works very well - it's my favourite bag.
I used to have a backpack harness for it, which made it convenient if
I had to carry the thing for any great distance, but that was stolen.

I use the Reporter 300 when I'm carrying 2 Leicas around, and can work
out of it quite well. It also attaches quite nicely to the handlebar
of my bicycle as a bar bag, so I use it for short rides.

The backpack is useful if I'm going for a long walk, or travelling. I
used it when I travelled around South India, but I found it rather
inconvenient to work from, so I stopped doing that.

The problem with bags is that you fill them up, and they weigh a ton.
So I prefer not to use any of them if I can avoid it, and would rather
carry the cameras over my shoulders and keep the necessary bits and
pieces in a pocket or belt bag. This forces me to minimise everything
and keep the weight down. I now prefer to work with 2 bodies and 2
lenses, so I don't have to change lenses. I keep film or other similar
stuff in the map pocket of my shorts or trousers, and a light meter in
my shirt pocket. Usually there's no need to carry anything else
around.

I was too busy watching my beloved Fighting Irish go down to defeat to
LSU (who played a great game, BTW) in the SugarBowl. At about 10:30
my time, right after another LSU bomb to the endzone, I flipped around
the channels a bit to see the closing credits of said special on PBS

I smacked myself on the forehead (because I remembered seeing an ad

Hi Bruce,

I find this a somewhat odd photo. I don't see the Norman Rockell

You certainly got a good exposure - none of the snow appears to be burnt

So how well does TTL work on DS? What does one lose from P-TTL?

P-TTL with the built in flash does pretty well if you are not one of

How about with a flash on the hot shoe? How would the DS do with a regular
TTL flash like the 500FTZ or AF280T vs. the newer FGZ series?

I'm gearing up to purchase a flash and trying to decide what would give me

Can't really answer that. I've only used simple, non-dedicated flash
units with the *ist DS or K10D to date, other than built-in flash. On
the other hand, P-TTL does a terrific job of balancing ambient and
flash exposure properly.

For me, I would not buy a dedicated flash that wasn't fully
compatible with the K10D at this point. Otherwise I stick with the
Sunpak 383, which is a lot cheaper than dedicated flash units of the

Everuthinf from DL, DL2 etc and newer do NOT support TTL in ANY way. That's
 it.

After playing with the TTL flash for awhile, it seems to work
pretty well on my -DS... enough so that I'll probably buy it from him so
he doesn't get screwed on shipping twice to return it. I've had very good
luck with my Vivitar 285 and although it's very large, cumbersome, and
doesn't swivel, it does have another stop of power than this one. With
TTL, I especially like the way the camera effectively works the way it
should WRT metering with pre-A lenses. Set to 'M', set shutter to
1/180, set aperture as desired and fire... no half-accurate GB/AE-Lock
button metering kludge to deal with.

As far as I've been able to tell, the TTL metering isn't dead-on
consistent. With my K50/1.4, there's probably 1 stop difference between
the end exposure at f/2 vs. f/11 or so (larger apertures overexposing).
Probably due to the angle of light hitting the sensor and bouncing to the
TTL flash sensor? Anyway, no less accurate than the Vivitar 285's
averaging on-flash sensor WRT shadowy subject against white walls, etc.

So just to clarify... the -DS manual stating that P-TTL NOT
working with A (or pre-A?) is a typo? An external P-TTL flash does indeed
work properly with A lenses or older?

Thanks,
-Cory

For AF lenses, it allows for overshoot in the AF control

I can't comment on the DS or the AF280T, but with the D, I have more
consistent results with the AF540 FGZ than I did with the AF500 FTZ.
Also, the wireless capabilities of the FGZ flashes open up all sorts

If you can't quite spring for either the 360 of 540 FGZ, the 500 FTZ,
is pretty good once you understand it's limitations.

P-TTL with the built in flash does pretty well if you are not one of
those people whose eye-blink reflex timing is a problem.

How about with a flash on the hot shoe? How would the DS do with a regular
TTL flash like the 500FTZ or AF280T vs. the newer FGZ series?

I'm gearing up to purchase a flash and trying to decide what would give me
good results at a good value.

work properly with A lenses or older?

The DS manual has a couple of discrepancies where it suggestes that A
series lenses are not supported by P-TTL.

As simple as I can make it:

With the DS built-in flash
- P-TTL works with A series and all AF lenses.
- flash operates full output, unmetered, with pre-A lenses used in
manual exposure mode (so you can control the aperture).

With the DS and an AF360/540FGZ dedicated external flash
- P-TTL mode works with A series and all AF lenses
- TTL mode works with pre-A series lenses.

The one case I have not checked is to use a pre-A lens in Av mode and
see if that works with P-TTL. It might, because the lens will ALWAYS
be wide open ... the camera can make the exposure evaluation with the
pre-flash before lifting the mirror.

This time, I set the focus most carefully, and used a cable release on the

Then, I decided to ramp up the ISO to see if I could get some noise.
There are three shots of the moon on this page, the top was shot at ISO 100,
the middle at ISO 400, the bottom was shot at ISO 1600.
Again, this series was shot with the A600/5.6 with the 2XL converter

could, though I gave the ISO 1600 file less sharpening as it was showing
 noise at that point.

Re: Bag for GFM Outing

2007-01-04 Thread Scott Loveless
Walt,

I have a Tamrac Velocity 5, which was recommended by several list
members. It only has room for one body if you're going to be carry
extra lenses. If you're carrying a second body you would have to
remove the body in the bag to get to your lenses. The plus side is
that in addition to the shoulder straps it also has a built in waist
band. Plus, the flap can be opened toward you or to the side, which
is quite nice. But based on carrying two bodies I don't think I would
recommend it.

I'd like to offer another recommendation for the Domke F2. Mine's an
old beater, but it's holding together nicely. There is room for two
bodies with small lenses attached plus four center compartments for
more lenses and a flash. It has two front compartments, two end
compartments, a rear compartment, and some space inside the top flap.
You can access all of your gear from the top without having to remove
anything. I have noticed two drawbacks. If your bodies have long
lenses or zooms attached it can be hard to remove them. A possible
solution would be to move the center dividers to one end and only
carry one body in the bag. The bag is not rigid, so it will take on a
banana shape when carried with the shoulder strap. It's much easier
to get to your gear if you can support the bag from beneath. Kneeling
down and putting the bag on your knee will do the trick. Get the
backpack staps for those long walks.

HTH.

Agreed. This is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. If you're not
shooting any film, the DA70 is a better option (smaller, less
expensive, just as good). Otherwise, the 77. Maybe, just maybe, this
will result in a few more 77LTDs on the used market.

The only LTD I've ever seen at KEH was a 43, and that was after the

I have a modest size Beseler sling bag, tried a Domke and a Tamrac as
well. I've looked at the Lowerpro 200 AW.
For some uses they are convenient, but for most I find them rather
awkward to work with.

i have a Lowepro CompuTrekker AW, which is a great bag when i want to
carry a ton of gear and the computer, get through airports, etc, and
have another rollaway already to deal with. I find it a major pain in
the butt to use for actually working out of ... probably better if
you tend to hike out into the wilderness a long ways and then do some
photography, but I don't do that kind of thing very often if at all.

Another bag I have for travel is a Pelican 1514 case. That's my
preference for when I'm carrying a lot of gear and only a little
travel clothing as it is a hard rollaway that fits nicely in overhead
luggage carry on. It is a perfect storage case for the Pentax 645 kit
that is on loan to me (camera, four lenses, two film inserts and a
few spare rolls of film just about fills it...).

But I never use any of these big cases for actual shooting. They're
more useful for storage/stowage while traveling. A good, compact
shoulder/hip bag is much more useful for shooting, for me.

This straps getting in the way is very much a matter of habit. If you are
used to have it around the neck you will automatically protect it from
branches and other stuff when needed.

I'm very used to have things hanging from my neck, it is my second nature
carrying my dog strap around my neck when the dog is unleashed. Got to admit
it bothers me every now and then, but absolutely not a big issue. It's a

Nicely done, Bill. I like moon shots.

Unlike others, I see unpleasant noise in the ISO 1600 shot, especially
at the top of the moon. ISO 1600 also seems softer to me. But
certainly it is not bad. It's just not as good as the first two.

Bag for GFM Outing

2007-01-04 Thread Walter Hamler
Thanks for all the responses. I got enough good input to go to the store
this AM and found a ProMaster Sling Bag. It will hold all my lenses, even
the 350mm T-Mount, and the second body if necessary.
I likes the combo of over the shoulder/backpack, with the waist belt it
stays in place and the feel is better than just a shoulder bag. I suspect
that in actual use I will carry both bodies with lens attached, and only the
spare lenses, accessories in the bag.
This bag is much smaller and better built than my old shoulderbag, so I
think I will like it a lot.
See you at GFM in June!

I always considered them a necessary evil ... they always got in the
way. Nothing to do with style or habit. I hate having *anything*
hanging from my neck or even from my belt.

When I need a place to set the camera aside while changing lenses, I
either put it on a table or hang it from the wrist strap using a
carabiner on the shoulder bag strap. (I wear the shoulder bag with
the strap across my shoulders and use a belly-strap to keep it on my
back when walking or bending ... hate the bloody things flopping about.)

Film? What's film? Only film I've touched in four years has been 120
film, and that's pre-loaded onto film inserts for the P645 when at
home. When I run out of loaded inserts, my shooting is usually
done. ;-)
