RE: Light painting
From: Larry Colen I've got an idea for some photos that I'd like to do. In short, light painting some Japanese calligraphy. To do this, I need a flashlight with a fairly bright, fairly tight beam, with a non-locking push-to-close switch. If need be, I can probably get the beam I need using a fairly bright light and some sort of a snoot on the beam, but all of the flashlights I seem to have these days have push on / push off switches. It seemed that it used to be that all flashlights had the type of switch I'm looking for so that you could send morse code or something. Anybody have suggestions on where to find a suitable flashlight for what I need, preferably under $20? Or am I looking at getting creative with a flashlight and a switch from Radio Shack? What you need is a pinch light; something like this: http://www.rapala.com/FPL/FPL,default,pd.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Thanks, Bob. Yes, it is the window of a jewelry store in Makawao, Maui. Makawao is the traditional Paniolo or cowboy town of Maui, with a great rodeo on the Fourth of July weekend. One can still see cows being herded by men on horseback. It is also a town of artists, with painters, sculptors, glass blowers and other artisans working in town, and many other galleries and craft shops. My wife's favorite store sells hand painted shirts and other items. It has has a popular steakhouse as well as great cafes serving food made mostly from local seafood and produce. RE: PESO - Wesley
Like many social services, shelters are a weird mix of public and private charities. Most of the private ones are run by religious groups such as the Salvation Army. While they get government subsidies, those don't cover the cost of running the shelter so they charge a nominal fee. The city-run shelters are apparently the worst of the worst and I've spoken to some who would rather sleep outside than stay in one of those. OT: New NiMH AA/AAA smart charger
Hi all, Welp! I finally got me one of them there fancy smart chargers for my batteries -- it's an AccuPower IQ-328, like this one: http://compare.ebay.com/like/320749631694?_lwgsi=yltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypesvar=sbar http://compare.ebay.com/like/320749631694?_lwgsi=yltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypesvar=sbar It didn't come with a very detailed manual; it came with a folded up piece of paper telling you how to put the batteries in and push the buttons. It seems like a fairly well-made piece of equipment in that it has some heft to it and feels pretty sturdy. That is, it doesn't scream CHEAP! when you pull it out of the box the way things do when you get a bargain at one of those warehouse clearance sales bonanzas that show up at the local convention hall/civic center a couple of times a year. Problem is, I've never used a charger of this type before. So, I really don't know what the hell I'm doing. I looked around for tutorials on how to use a smart charger for a couple of hours last night, but couldn't find anything remotely useful. What I have been able to determine is that the charger I got is somewhat similar to the LaCrosse 9009. So, I thought I'd try tapping into the formidable knowledge base to see if any of you might be able to point me to a good resource for learning how to properly use this type of charger without ruining a whole gang of batteries. Right now, I have a set of old Energizer rechargeables in it, figuring if I'm going to ruin some batteries on a first-run, those would be the ones to use. Here's a set of photos of the readings I'm currently getting from the batteries in Test mode (the image titles indicate the respective readings): http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629218953563/ According to the literature, in Test mode, it charges the batteries, fully discharges and recharges them again. Given the --- reading under the Charged Capacity reading, I assume it's in the process of fully discharging them. But, given the fact that there are wildly disparate readings under the Charge Time display, I can't help wondering what's going on. Anyhoo. Any help anyone can give me in figuring this thing out -- a good tutorial, or advice of any kind -- would be much appreciated. Actually, Bruce, that's true. To expand on my last post, the reason some avoid the free shelters is that there is much theft, assaults and guys who are drunk or high at those places. It does look more like a medium format killer rather than a D700 replacement. I hope that Pentax/Ricoh has an updated 645D with higher sensor resolution waiting in the wings. 30mp is getting might close to the 40mp sensor in low end MF DSLRs. What's curious is that it doesn't seem to be a replacement for the D700 (moderate but adequate resolution and killer high-ISO capability) but rather an ultra-high-resolution-above-all camera. Not that there's anything wrong with that if it's your game but it does leave D700 owners with nowhere to upgrade to. Re: OT: New NiMH AA/AAA smart charger
AFAIK, there is no need or use to deep-discharging NiMH cells. That function of your charger is to resurrect NiCads that have developed the dreaded memory problem (internal shorts). I only ever use then recharge my now vast collection of NiMHs and they last for years. I'm using a smart charger too; an Ansmann (a now discontinued model). I'd get another just like it if I needed one. It's the bees knees. One bit of advice I can give you: always clean off the contacts on both ends of the cells before charging them and before using them, especially in flashes. Fixes all kinds of flakey behavior. Today, it is known that this chemistry also suffers from memory but to a lesser extent than the NiCd. The positive nickel plate, a metal that is shared by both chemistries, is responsible for the crystalline formation. [...] Applying a full discharge once every three months appears right. Because of the NiMH battery’s shorter cycle life, over-exercising is not recommended. So there you have it. Re: OT: New NiMH AA/AAA smart charger
Thanks, Bruce! Given the difference in the voltage readings and the indicated charge time, I can't help wondering if one or more of those Energizer cells is damaged, though. In any event, some of my low self-discharge AA's seem to have scattered to the four winds (left a set of four and the charger in the back of a friend's car, and left another set at a friend's house when they ran down and I had to borrow some standard alkaline batteries to get through the rest of the evening. I still have a set of Eneloops, but didn't want them to be the first ones I stuck in the new charger in the event I didn't know what the hell I was doing and managed to ruin them. If these turn out OK, I'll feel a lot better. And then maybe -- just maybe -- I'll be able to get the rest of my LSD's back someday. -- Walt On 2/7/2012 2:07 PM, Bruce Walker wrote: No sooner did I post that than this article came to light ... http://www.buchmann.ca/Article10-Page1.asp When Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) was first introduced there was much publicity about its memory-free status. With 2 softboxes at 30 degrees to each side, you shouldn't need any center fill. The result that you have is very flat lighting. I'd also strive to not use the florescent lighting at all. Re: New lenses DA 560/5.6, DA 50/1.8
Optics on all Pentax 50mm lenses are pretty much constant in each lens line. The 1.7 hasn't really changed since 1977 when the original M version was released. The f1.4 goes back even further, sometime in the 1960's when it was first released in M42 mount as a Super Takumar. There have been minor improvements but really the M version is mostly as good optically as the FA version and every one in between. The A is the most common with full aperture automation. I just like the F version myself, because it looks a bit odd. I don't know about that. The difference in size between the two sensors isn't that huge. Not like the difference between 35mm film and 120 film even in a 645 format camera. I think potential buyers in the medium format digital market are generally far too experienced and knowledgeable to count pixels and think this is a substitute for MF digital - sensor size matters. (Buty I wouldn't be surprised if an upgrade to the 645D came before long.) Be that as it may, but the 44mmx33mm sensor is only 1.6 times the area of the 36mmx24mm sensor.with 1.3 times the pixels. Assuming optimize pixel sizes and spacing for both brings us down to pretty much a pixel count comparison. The D800 can produce a 25 1/2 in x 16 1/3 in print at 300dpi, the 645D can produce a 24 1/4 in x 18 1/8 in print at 300 dpi. There seems to be a rough parity here. I haven't verified your math PJ... :) but would point out that a $3000 (D800) or $3300 (D800E) camera is significantly more affordable than the 645D ($10,000) or the Nikon D3X ($8000). I was considering a 24MP D3X at one time, but a $5000 or so price break + 12MP more definitely makes the cash outlay easier to imagine. We've also seen an overall increase in noise performance the past few years despite high pixel counts. Recall that numerous pros were switching from MF film cameras to the 20MP+ Canon FF models several years back. I agree. There is not much difference in Pentax 50mm lens performance from the K50/1.4 thru M50/1.4, A50/1.4, and FA50/1.4. Same for the K50/1.7 thru M50/1.7, A50/1.7, and F50/1.7. Thanks, Walt. I am working on my laptop in very bright light, so you are probably right. Re: New lenses DA 560/5.6, DA 50/1.8
I heard of the new lenses in an email from Pentax forums. I clicked on the link to take a look, and I saw this comment below the announcement: 560mm lens a bit much? 840mm eff? Good luck keeping that steady. Seriously? Am I missing something or is this comment as ridiculous as it sounds? Am I missing something or is this comment as ridiculous as it sounds? 1) In theory keeping a 540 steady on APS is no different than doing so on 24x36. 2) I do just fine with my 500mm bigma, or my tammy 300/2.8 with the 2x TC. I just don't tend to hand hold them at 1/10 second. 3) I don't think it would be any more problem than the Canikon folks have with long lenses on their APS cameras. 4) How about that shot we saw a while back taken with a 600mm on a Q. Or was that a Q on a 600mm? -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
