One more thing whatever computer you get be sure to max out the ram it is not
very expensive today. Are you using multiple hard drives for recording? If not
you need a great FireWire drive or something very fast as I said in my earlier
post Sweetwater can advise what to do.

Re: Mac and Control Surface Recommendations

2016-03-01 Thread Ricky Prevatte
When it comes to a Mac computer I would definitely never be under an ice seven
processor if I were spending money. I would keep what you have until I could do
that. Mac mini or more iMac or some kind of tower would be a strong upgrade I
use the MCU pro.
If I were you I would call Sweetwater music and talk with them. They will
consult with you and tell you what to do even if you do not purchase anything
from them at this time. I will say they do sell the Apple product and they have
a great finance plan. They will support you for two years set everything up
with you but will not train you but they have lots of great information at
sweet care which is their support site. More and more experience in dealing
with Blind Mac users just food for thought sometimes you can pay a little more
to start out and get exactly what you need saving a headache and just enjoying
or be productive in your studio. You can find that Mackie used for the same
price as the X touch. The faders are so quiet and the unit works so great I
highly recommend that. What are you putting your audio into the machine with?

Re: Mac and Control Surface Recommendations

2016-03-01 Thread TheOreoMonster
The computer you configured should be plenty sufficient for pro tools.
While i have gotten away with mixing on my MBA i wouldn't recommend
an air as your only computer if you are trying to run a studio off of
it. A mac mini should be find but once again go for as much
ram/processor as you can afford. i7's in theory give you more
processing cores and Both Pro Tools and logic seem to be multi thread
aware so imagine they can take advantage of such things. As for the
behringer X touch you will have to check their site to see if it has
Pro Tools/HUI support. Otherwise you will be looking at something
used if you are wanting to stay far south of $1000.

If you're going back and forth between PT and Logic I would recommend the
Mackie MCU pro, I think you can get them for around $400 used. If you need mic
pre's and headphone all in one surface then you would have to let us know your
price range. I haven't heard of any using the Beranger piece with PT myself,
but then again, maybe some don't go that rout after putting such a chunk of
money into a good PT set up. Are you on the Pro Tools access list for the blind?

Re: Control Surface Recommendations

2015-11-10 Thread Nick Gawronski
Hi, I also have a Digi 003 with the moving fading controls that I would be
willing to sell if anyone is interested as I will want something that is
supported threw at least the next three versions or so of Pro Tools and if
possible something that also will allow me to connect it to my windows
system and record using programs that blind people use on the windows
side of things. I was hearing a lot of good things about the Artist
control surfaces and the new USB interfaces but don't want to lose any
inputs or outputs. What is a good USB audio interface that has the same
amount of inputs and outputs as the Digi 003? I don't mind getting one
that just works on the mac but would like something that works on both
systems so I can take it around and use it different places with different
systems. Nick Gawronski

Right. Isn't that an audio interface, not a control surface?
And, can I ask, is the Mix Control software for the Saffire range
accessible on the Mac? It is under Windows, but only with Jaws and
extensive hotspot clicker sets.
Saffire Pro26 here - good for the low cost.
At 12:14 PM 11/9/2015, you wrote:

It is affordable, too, and can be used with Protools and any other
software.

Once again a lot of you guys are confusing Avid’s use of the words “Not
Officially Supported” with won’t work. There is a big difference between not
officially supported and won’t work. Not supported just means they don’t
thoroughly test it with new PT version themselves anymore and you will get
limited if any support if you called their support line. Which if you don’t
have a support plan is a moot point anyways. When they list it as doesn’t work
is when it won’t work with newer versions of pro tools.

The 003 is still supported. There will come a time when it's not officially
supported but will still work but will not be tested with subsequent versions
of Pro Tools. At this time, I certainly wouldn't buy a new one but you can
still pick up a used one for considerably less than what it sold for new.

Re: Control Surface Recommendations

2015-11-10 Thread Jed Barton

Hey guys,
This is obviously a huge issue for all of us, having a control surface.
Has anyone thought of putting up a list of links and model numbers for
good accessible control surfaces?

I know for me this would be very helpful.
You can spend anywhere from a thousand to 5 grand or more on a control
surface.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jed

limited if any support if you called their support line. Which if you don’t
have a support plan is a moot point anyways. When they list it as doesn’t work
is when it won’t work with newer versions of pro tools.

RE: Control Surface Recommendations

2015-11-09 Thread Poppa Bear
Does the Digidesign 003 not work with PT12? It has 8 ins, 4 preamps, jog wheel,
two headphone jacks with separate volume knobs and 8 motorized faders as well
as fader flip mode. Like most all in one surfaces I think that the converters
and the pres are a little week, but you can expand the converters via light
pipe.

I use Saffire Pro40. It has knobs for each channel as well as two
headphone jacks. It has eight channels. I use it with my drum kit all
of the time.

It is affordable, too, and can be used with Protools and any other software.

As I understand it's basically a keyboard and all keys have

using
modifier keys etc. I'm just wondering if it will be useful and
whether
it will be possible to memorise the layout of all keys.

Interesting comments Mac. I don't have any experience using a control surface
with Protools, and am only commmenting about what I've read. I'll try my BCF
controller soon and see if I have any luck controling plugins with it. I look
forward to hearing how you get on with automting plugins with the surface when
you get it.

Interesting comments Mac. I don't have any experience using a control surface
with Protools, and am only commmenting about what I've read. I'll try my BCF
controller soon and see if I have any luck controling plugins with it. I look
forward to hearing how you get on with automting plugins with the surface when
you get it.

You are confusing the Hot Key Metrix with the Editor Keys pro Tools keyboard.
The Editors Key Pro Tools keyboard is a standard computer keyboard with the Pro
Tools hotKeys printed on each key along with the the normal letters of the

to remember all the keyboard shortcuts.

The hot key matrix is a controller that only has buttons and each of pro tools

press. i think the hot key matrix has something like 145 or something buttons
on it.

Can anyone with experience using a control surface with Pro tools recommend an
appropriate model?
Which ones provide the highest level of accessible interaction with Pro Tools

If I go with an S3 or even a C|24, will I still need an Avid audio interface
such as the Omni or 8X8X8, or will the control surface itself serve as the
audio interface?
Or would an Artist Mix and Transport coupled with an 8X8X8 give the same level
of accessibility, but just with fewer I/O options?
Thanks for any clarification and pointers you can provide.

Hi Alex,

I have struggeldwith this question myself.
And a
I think I have the answer.
I will go for the QCon Pro. its made by Icon.
And able to do Protools, QBase, Sonar, Logic and more.
the QCon Pro is a unit with nine motorised faders and all the knobs you could
venture.
Inc jogwheel, and transpoorts, as play, stop, rewind, fast forward, loop and
record.
there are knobs for automatisation, midi learning and many more features. I
spoke to my dealer, who sells all kind of controles, not only this nice priced
ones, but avid and macky to.
his saying is that this QCon Pro can do what all the others can.
So why bother spending more money?
you can also buy an audio interface wich fits in the pro unit, the Icon 1008.
10 inputs, 8 outputs, spdif, midi and more.
I will soon get the feel of this QCon pro and if any of you, would like my
experiences with this controlservice, i could post a podcast link on this list.
Any pro's and con's I will mention freely, also because I did not buy anything
yet...
here in Europ, the pro is going for 600 euro's and that also the price for
there Ex expanders.
With 3 of them, you can have your hands on 32 motorised faders and a lot of
really control!

Hi Alex,

Any of the Avid interfaces will give you the highest level of accessibility
with Pro Tools. The S series is definitely the future but I personally have no
experience with it. The C|24 is great but more expensive and will probably only
be supported for another few years. The Artist series is more affordable and
there are a couple of people using them. I don't think you can go wrong with
any of them. Unlike the 003, the other surfaces are not audio interfaces so
you'd have to use something as an interface for i/O.

Hi David,
for plugins I use a Behringer bcr 2000. But, as far as I know the QCon pro can
farily do its job with the plugins that proTools uses. there are lots of
asignable keys to work with and things as send, pan EQ and others are one knob
reachable. If the plugins were a real issue, the reviewers of other shops and
sites, would have mentioned this, because, that would have ment a great
showstopper.
But, if you have other info, please share it, so I can read this for myself.
