Please call your Senators at the Congressional
hotline. Congressional Switchboard

The U.S. Senate is one or two votes away from approving new health care
legislation that would cut and cap Medicaid and put at risk the essential
health benefits and pre-existing condition protections that are so
important to individuals with disabilities and their families. This vote
will occur the week of September 25th.

TAKE ACTION NOW! Tell your Senators to protect Medicaid home and
community-based services for children and adults with disabilities by
rejecting proposals that cut and cap Medicaid!

Please oppose the Graham-Cassidy amendment. The legislation includes
harmful provisions that would cap and cut Medicaid services for individuals
with disabilities and create uncertainty around essential health benefits
and other protections currently available to Americans with disabilities
and other pre-existing conditions.

Regarding the cloudiness: my urine used to be cloudy. At the time, I was asking
my aides to add lemon juice to my water, hoping that it would decrease UTIs and
help me drink more water. But then I read on this forum that lemon juice can
result in cloudy urine. I discontinued the lemons, and the cloudiness went away.

Regarding UTIs, I have heard that cranberry juice is a good thing. Good luck.

You might try care.com. It cost $30.00 for a month, it worked for me.
Craigslist is also a good place to put an ad.

2017-05-22 Thread Lori Michaelson
Yep Jeff... tried to find them last year and specifically the university
paper but there are others. My days have been so full of having one
accident or things that have to be done ASAP (or that day or that hour)
that we have not had time to even interview people at this point. This is
not an excuse... just the truth.

Actually, a lady that we found via advertising showed up on our doorstep
about a month ago. We let her and and she said that she was interested in
the job again (after she got over whatever crisis she had that she didn't
workout last year when my caregiver has to go away at least every month or
every other month). She said "I am just down the road so that would work
out nicely/additionally." Well, she never came back and when I tried to
call her at left a message and she never returned the call. When she was
here she also said that she might be breaking up with her boyfriend or
fiancé and when I spoke with her on the phone she told me that she did and
was in the process of moving but was still interested. Yeah right. And she
wasn't a young immature girl but, at the same time, not over my age either.
I was so hoping she would work out. My caregiver has had it with her so she
says if she shows up at the doorstep again she will look out the peephole
and if it is her she will not open the door. We are tired of sob stories
when we are trying to survive ourselves every day.

You can only give someone so many times and if you are depending on that
person to stay with you for a week... you can't wonder if they are going to
show up at all. My live-in caregiver is extremely dependent and neither of
us understand people like this. I mean, whatever came up again... can't you
just call and say that it won't work out again?"

Same thing happened with a girl who was cleaning for me and my husband
before he died. She has cleaned for me again four or five times that now
she has dropped off the face of the earth. No returning our calls or text
and, again, actions speak louder. Although, how come these people are
always on Facebook? Rhetorical course! Irritates the crap out of me and my
caregiver though!

In addition to me, I just know that William or Larry had just posted this
question about caregivers so thought I would offer that article for him and
then just put in my $.02. Oh... wait! $20 with inflation and all. :-)

[QUAD-L] Help getting my shower chair seat dipped?

2016-05-14 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
I have an older Guardian roll around shower chair. Im a big, tall guy so years
ago I had the seat cushion custom made then dipped in a grey plastic coating.
An organization called Adaptability actually had the cushion made for me. It
tore a hole in it and is getting water inside and making the transfers hard.
Does anyone on the list know a place where I can get a new cushion dipped/made?
Im thinking if I mail them the one I have they can make it from that. Any ideas
appreciated. I would buy a whole new mobile shower chair but im tall and
getting a proper fit is hard..

Kidney stones could certainly cause ad. They could move when you lie down and
put pressure on painful areas. I know my bladder hurts every morning when I
first wake up. Don't know why. I would bet that stones are the problem. Are you
sure there are no other cuts, sores, etc?

Hi Joan, in your add, it says position is with an agency? but you hire after?
how does it work in your state. In RI, I was on a Medicare part c program for

really bad. I AM NO LONGER RECEIVING ANY HELP.Anyway, I was issued checks to
pay my pca's that I hired. It is hard now because I can't receive help unless I
get on Medicaid and don't qualify because I have more than 10 thousand in
savings. It is such a bad system. I have tried to stay off Medicaid and support

  Hey folks,

I really need your help! If you're like me, you have a lot of things to say
when it comes to helping others, but not so much when it comes to ourselves!

Well, I'm in the middle of a rainstorm and am having trouble! I need to find
an attendant! Part time help for evenings. What I need help with is putting
together an ad and ideas on where to put the ads!

  Any and all suggestions welcome!

So sorry Lori

We have a school of nursing here in Reno as well as a school of nursing at the
Truckee Meadows community college. I found a couple of good attendants but we
had problems scheduling around their schedule J. They are also only looking for
the most part for during the school year and they’re gone during holidays.
Perhaps you will have more luck. My biggest problem is finding somebody for the
weekends-hired one last month, after four days plus money out of pocket,
decided that it was too emotional of a job! Back to the drawing board. Good
luck Joan

Thank you, Joan! Btw, this is Lori! And, I agree! I HATE looking for an
attendant too!!

My roommate got sick, last October and can't do the bulk of it anymore :-( He
has been helping me since 1996!! And, my good friend has been helping me since
1999!! Needless to say, this has been a shock to my system! I've been very
blessed with the 2 best attendants I could ever imagine! Didn't think I took it
for granted until he got sick. My world was turned upside down! We thought we
were going to lose him, he was that sick.

I did have a young girl take over the evenings, but she moved out of state.
Another girl took over the weekend mornings (a neighbor) Now I'm once again
looking! :-\

I'm thinking of putting an ad at the 2 colleges in my area (in the nursing
school area)

Re: [QUAD-L] help for finding a standing lift

2015-04-08 Thread Bob Vogel
I second the CAUTION on standing if you haven't stood in 20 years. The
*average* para and quad has
severe osteoporosis after 20 years. I would talk with a PMR doc and ask about
a bone scan--best would
be a bone scan of bones in the lower leg--which only a few centers do.

Here is an article I wrote about the natural progression of bone loss after
spinal cord injury. Fingers crossed
you are among the 20% of individuals that for some unknown reason develop
stronger bones as time goes
on.

Have you tried working with a social worker to find out your options in your state? Here where I live we talk with in home support services in Sothern California but originally a social worker told me what was out there, get me signed up and helped me get it covered by insurance. Now when I need a caregiver I basically call and tell them to put me on the list and start getting calls from prospective caregivers and set up an interview if they answered my questions over the phone well enough. If you want to find someone on your own that you can pay out of pocket unfortunately other than word of mouth I''m unsure of good ways.Good luck!-Danny

First, I am in awe and impressed that you live alone. I'm married to a c5/6 and
he could not live alone. Too many 'what if's'...back to your inquiry...we hire
private pay and use Craigslist. Ice cream the applicants you email me directly.
They make it past me then my husband will interview them by phone. If they make
it past that he will meet them and some neutral location. If he does not get
the sense that they are drug seekers, that they do have their own vehicle, and
that they have experience, he sets up a time for them to come for two hours to
observe our routine regarding transferring, range of motion, dressing, bowel
care etc.

We spent 20 bucks and do a background check online. We keep a file with a copy
of their drivers license, Social Security card, and a photo of their car and
license plate. It is established from day one that we have a zero tolerance
policy regarding tardiness and no-shows. We have been Synanon signout each day.
We have three separate lists which we give them during the interview process if
they make it to the step where they actually come to the house. One list is
personal assistant type stuff--helping him prepare for appointments, order
medical supplies, minor wheelchair maintenance, run errands, etc. The second
list is more medical: such as bowel program, range of motion, etc. And the
other list is more household stuff. The idea is that my husband takes care of
house because I bring in the income. The things he cannot do for himself, it is
the job of him as a tenant to make sure those things get done: meal prep,
laundry, etc.

As you all know, we have learned that you have to have a clear management of
expectations. Can't assume anything.

Here's a typical ad for us:

Personal Attendant/Assistant for a private individual (not a company)

Experience in eldercare/disability care required

Position requires:
Transferring/lifting from wheelchair, bed, shower. Bladder/bowel care.
Dressing, bathing, range of motion exercises (stretching), meal prep.

Household duties: laundry, cooking, sweeping, making bed, general cleaning,
light yard work (raking, water plants), errands as needed. The duties
associated with this position will be pretty routine but are subject to change
as needed.

Send resume/list of experience as it relates to this particular position only.

Ability to Lift 100 lbs.

Due to the nature of this job, you must be flexible and RELIABLE.

All REFERENCES checked.

Requirements: Male only. Own transportation. No felonies.

M-F, possibly Saturdays 2 times per month. 4-5 hours per day in morning/early
afternoon. (20- 25 hours/week)

All my best,

Re: [QUAD-L] help

Paul,
I'm a c5/6 quad also. I've been living alone for the last 10 years or so
and I find good help is cyclic. You need a connection to aides who can do
your care. Here is how I would do it. Find an agency who can staff aides
that can meet your needs. Then you always have backup when you need it.
If you cant afford an agency indefinitely for all your care, ask the aides
from the agency if they know anyone who would like to work for you
privately- it usually costs about half as much. Recruiting aides who work
at the agency is frowned upon if not illegal (even though it happens all
the time).
Here are few other pointers:
Get lots of practice training aides
A great aide isn't necessarily cute, a great conversationalist, a specific
gender or even very smart. You are looking for a punctual reliable person
who will come when you need help and clean up shit. You are not looking
for a girlfriend or even a friend. Your paying them to do a job.
Train them well early and keep up on it. Probably shouldn't compare it to
training a dog but there are many similarities. Dont be afraid to confront
them when they are not doing what needs to be done (also compliment them
when they do well).
I'd say 75% of all aides can physically handle the job (I weigh about 180)
so there is no reason to limp along with crummy care.
I like to have at least 3 aides at any one time.
Stay loyal to the ones who deserve it.
It's about your safety and there's no way to work a real job if you cant
get out of bed reliably.
Guys, feel free to chime in...
-Joe

As a C4/5, I lived alone for 5 years through college and a year later, then
got married. My best aides were students, typically OT and PT students.
I've had over 200 aides in my 26 years. Always have at least 2 aides per
day. I pay $15/hr and expect high quality care. Get your routine down to
a systematic step-by-step process. Make certain the trainee takes notes.
Give them a sheet explaining Autonomic Dysreflexia and what to do if you
lose consciousness. Other than that, treat your aide with respect.

Try propping your feet up more during the day. I'm guessing you probably pee a
lot at night, don't you? If so, that's because you're retaining fluid in your
lower limbs… And then when you lay down that fluid moves… Hence the extra
urination.

Hi Bobbie,
I'm so sorry to hear about your long stay in bed. I can't relate to
that but I spend a lot of time on FB playing Words with Friends.
Netflix helps me kill some time. I once had a quad friend, he was much
older has since past. He spent his time on a gurney on his belly so
he wouldn't be stuck in his room. When it gets warmer maybe this is
something you can do. If nothing else, to get outside feel the sun on
your body.

Damn, Bobbie, I'm pretty much speechless. I've had a sore about 3x4 in on my
butt for over 6 yrs. It has hardly any depth, but it never changes - no better,
no worse. I do not have your self-discipline. I have spent no extensive time in
bed which, obviously, I should have. I use a Roho cushion and sit up 12-15 hrs.
a day. We dress it morning and night. I figure I'll have it till I leave this
world. Maybe I'm a nut, but I just cannot lie in bed day and night. The pain is
ridiculous. I know I didn't help a bit, but know I certainly empathize with
your situation. It is a bowl of crap with a crap soda and dish of crap on the
side. Another shitty quandry from the wonderful world of quadom. God bless and
good luck.

Bobbie,

You're certainly preaching to the choir here. Most of us quads have been
through the mind-numbing frustration of having to spend extended time in bed.
It really can cause a person to go stir-crazy and spiral into depression.

Here's my humble bit of advice: you mentioned you wanted to plan something, so
my suggestion is to start planning something [or everything!] While laying in
bed might be boring, it's a golden opportunity to get your life and to do
list in order! Make a list of the top-ten places you want to visit. Write down
the books you've always wanted to read (have someone check your local library
for books on CD). Make a life-plan of where you want to be in a year, 5 years,
20 years. Think of 10 classic movies you've never seen and rent them. Think of
friends you haven't contacted in years and surprise them with a letter you've
typed or dictated. Go online to Khan Academy  and take free, self-paced review
classes in math, science, humanities. Go online to Do One Thing and plan to
better your community.

There are soo many things you can do with your time while you're healing.
The worst thing you can do is nothing because that's when the negative thoughts
creep in. Keep your mind active and productive. Actively visualize your sore
healing. Read up on alternative therapies. Stay active in your life! Take
control!!

Written with love,
Don.

In response to a chronic pressure sore: obviously you realize this is not good.
Even if the sore is not increasing in size there is a huge danger in having an
open sore--this is, literally, an open invitation for an infection. Sores on
your butt are exponentially more risky due to the possible contact with e. coli
from feces.

You mentioned that you have used a Roho consistantly. Perhaps there's a better
option out there for you? If you're unable to sleep on your stomach or stay in
bed why not consider an air-bead bed or other specialty bed?

I would hate to see you get really sick from this sore--an open decubitus is
NOT something to take lightly! I'm only getting 'preachy' here because I care
and don't want to lose any more quad friends due to preventable conditions!

Don.

sleep in her chair because she didn't know if her aid would be able to make it.
Her family could have helped her AND helped themselves.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND! Nobody in her family EVER comes to see her in the 15

A potentimeter is nothing more then an adjustable speed control. They are
held in position with two thin hex nuts in a joystick assembly. The
potentimeter has a wiper on it can get dirty and require blowing out with air
pressure. When a potentimeter fails, its usually replaced or the attached
p/c board is replaced. I suspect that one or the other is the issue. But I
can only speculate on the internet, not seeing what you have.

Quad Squad Help!
I'm having problems with my potentiometer, it turns on even when I'm not
tilting or reclining. So I went to CMC, the company I got my chair from 8
years ago but been having a lot of problems with them the last 12 or more
years, so I'm seriously considering switching suppliers. Before I go on , last
Thursday I went to Kessler to their wheelchair clinic to get fitted for a
new chair by a different supplier, Wilpage. Standing right next to me was
Eahn, a rep from CMC.
Yesterday Pete and I dropped in on CMC (their only 5 miles away and don't
mind drop-in's) to get my potentiometer adjusted/fixed, a repair man was
working on my chair when a voice called him away. CMC is run by a husband and
wife team. Patti, the wife, came storming out from the back without the
repair man and began YELLING at me and Pete about how they are not going to
fix my chair because she heard I was ordering a chair from another supplier.
I told her I hadn't quite decided which supplier I was going to use and
was going through the possess to gather information. And I reminded her that
I HAD a sales rep from CMC, her company, at my home 3 months before and I
had questions but the sales rep never got back to to date. Patti asked why I
was considering using another supplier Pete (my husband) said
communication I told her that an employe, Dana, NEVER returns my calls or
follows
through on a RX or repair request. Patti said OH, we got rid of her because
we
have been getting a lot of complaints about her.
Patti went in the back (we heard F this and F that) when she returned she
said she had just gotten off the phone with Kessler and yes it was true
that I was on a fact finding mission and that she was now SO VERY SORRY. Yes,
of course we will fix the potentiometer, will'll even do it for free if you
order your chair from us. THEN Patti disappeared again in the back room
and reappeared with Dana the employee that she JUST said they had let go we
just moved her to another desk she now says, you will never deal with her
again, and then Dana apologized. Now Patti is begging and pleading with us
not to go to another supplier when Carlos, her husband, appears YELLING at
Pete and me about how we should have written a letter to them explaining
the communication problem.
Why are the husband and wife, Patti Carlos, yelling at us of hey was us
to stay with them?
We leave not promising anything We need to think about all of this. me
and Pete say … which is very true. As soon as we went directly home, which
took 10 minutes, the phone rang and it was the sales rep apologizing, never
asking why I was trying to get a hold of him for 3 months.
The next day I decided to find put how much this part will cost
out-of-pocket instead of waiting 10 to 14 days, $325 is all. So I want to
pay and
get reimbursed because I have an appointment at wheelchair clinic again
September 13th and I'm most likely NOT going to use CMC with whom I've gotten
my last chair from.
BUT the supplier I'm going to go with Wilpage, I've NEVER delt with
before. But a quad up-stairs, SCI, has used them for years and years and she
LOVES them. Wilpage comes to her place to do repairs and is very good at
returning phone calls … communication.
One more thing. I still am not sure who will repair the chair I'm sitting
in now until I get my new chair, which can take 6 to 7 months after
ordering.
What do I do?

My friend is quadriplegic, having little control of his neck or of his
limbs. I'm trying to find games he might be able to do and have had limited
success with the Wii Fit which we just started experimenting with. What he
can do is press down on the Balance Board (which is resting on his
wheelchair tray) with his fists. In this manner he is able to progress some

soccer balls and dodging the flying shoes.

Also, he has been able to manage a little of a running game by wiggling the

My question is - What other Wii games might be good for him. He has limited

In this manner he is able to progress some
with the game Heading, just trying to use the Balance Board to hit the
soccer balls and dodging the flying shoes.

Also, he has been able to manage a little of a running game by wiggling the

Congrats Trish! A very excellent question and I hope you get more
answers. Since the first time I witnessed seniors playing Wii in nursing
homes
for exercise and entertainment, I realized what a powerful rehab tool this
could be. It would also be interesting to learn if any research is being
conducted in this area.

Hi

I replied to your instant message before seeing the email.

The first thing I would do would be call the Nurse Hotline at Craig -
1-800-247-0257. They serve the whole country and Craig is an excellent SCI
facility.

Is the cold referred to a cold as in coughing, sneezing, or is it body
temperature. Some people are cold quads. You may remember Margaret, who
used to work here. Sometimes Margaret gets freezing cold and perspires at
the same time for no apparent reason.

You know I am not a medical person and I probably shouldn't suggest it,
but blood pressure and temperature issues sound like they could be autonomic
dysreflexia. Sometimes you have to be a detective to figure things out.
Another person I know will no longer fly much farther than Chicago to Florida.
After several bad experiences, he believes that on longer flights, the
pressure in airplanes has an awful affect on his bladder and catheter.

If this person is not being treated in a hospital that has lots of
experience with SCI, maybe the physician would be willing to consult with
someone
who is part of the Model System of SCI Care.

I hope this will be of some help.

For many, that is a common issue, depending on their injury. Sometimes,
there are medical issues. Other times its just part of the post injury

Is kyle actually cold or is it cold chills? I know that sounds weird but
there are times I am cold but times when I have pain that I have cold chills
and sweating (like right now I have a sore and I have chill bumps with the
back of my neck sweating)

It is normal for a quad to be cold but the sweating concerns me since it is
an indicator of pain. Is he like this both in his chair and in bed?
Sometimes just a pubic hair being pulled or skin being pulled can cause some
pain. Even catheter, wrinkle in clothing, etc...is his sore completely
healed?

Hope you all get it figured out...I know it is aggravating.

Re: [QUAD-L] help

2011-09-26 Thread Aaron Mann
I hear two things going on here (as others have mentioned). The feeling of
being cold and cold sweats. Very briefly, I have been a C4-5 Quad since
'88 (23 years).

In the early years it is very common for me to sun bathe for hours in 90
degree weather, require a space heater blowing on me, or sit under heated
blankets in the house. Most Quads I've known out grow the need for the
room to be 80-85 degrees or being bundled up all the time. This has been
explained to me that the brain does not know how to regulate a body it
cannot communicate with. So, once the mental trigger is pulled that you
are cold. It takes extreme lengths of heat to get the trigger reset. In
my experience this happened a lot during the first 5 years. Since then it
only happens if either I'm not dressed appropriately and I do actually get
cold or my brain is not busy thinking about something other than the
temperature of the room. I live in a home that I keep at 77 degrees in
Summer and 72 in Winter. I work in a room that they keep 72 all the time.
The key is to figure out how you need to dress to be comfortable. At work I
keep a shawl handy (yes, a guy with a shawl). I'd rather look a little
different than deal with needing to reset my brain.
Cold sweats are occuring due to pain (just as you've read from others). It
is VERY IMPORTANT that you identify the source of the pain. This is the way
that Quads know something is wrong. Typically things you'll experience are
a flush feeling, sweating, increased spasms, and chill bumps. All of
these are signs of mild to moderate Dysreflexia. (VERY IMPORTANT: If you
don't know about Dysreflexia, reasearch it!) As long as you don't have a
headache, red face, and splotchy bright redness on your shoulders and chest,
then it's not severe, immediate Dr or hospital type Dysreflexia. I have
completely soaked shirts before. And, very oddly I sweat in very specific
places like only my left forehead and left shoulder. Usually it is a
bladder infection, but more often I may hit my knee under a table and know I
need to re-position myself.

I hope some of this helps. Hang in there! To this day I still tell myself
This, too, shall pass. It will, you'll move on through this phase.

Good luck!

Aaron Mann

Be sure to take your temperature to see if you have a fever. Before my
accident, my temperature was very consistently 98.6°. Today, most days, it
is several degrees below that. If my temperature is 98.6° today, I know I
have some sort of a problem.

I have really enjoyed using a snuggie. It helps me get warm when I am in a

I support you Don and anyone else that uses that information in the study
to further the cause. I actually know of few that have chosen to dedicate
their professional lives in the area of spinal cord injuries as most
insurance companies don't see the need and will not pay. And this is truly
sad.

Now I did visit the site survey and noticed that someone who takes the
survey, might just might win the opportunity to a 200 dollar Visa Card. I
don't know what the odds are as it was not stated. The survey did not
list any of the National Spinal Cord hospitals as endorsements. That would be
nice. Nor did it acknowledge any approval from our esteem host and site
owner: Jim Lubin.

What a day to take a survey, Valentine Day.

You are not the first, nor with you be the last to enlist members here for
your study. Each year around this time of the season the Quad-List
receives several requests for us to share tangible information so that people
like yourself can graduate and make tons of money, while many here are barely

Is your present study supported by the National Spinal Cord Assoc as an

Is your present study supported by any of the national disAbility programs
or support groups?

I personally haven't taken the time yet to visit your survey, but it would
be nice to see that some kind of benefit would be available to those who
are supplying you with the information for your survey to graduate and make
tons of money. I hope you never, never forget those who supported your

I totally agree. I always fill out these types of surveys. I figure
if it helps spread the word about quads, the more the better. If they
get rich off of the information, great! It means our info has spread
far and wide. We don't want to return to the back room do we?

At 11:59 AM 2/14/2011, Don Price said something that elicited my response:

If Shanna is studying to get her degree to help those of us with
spinal cord injuries [whether psychology, PT, OT or Medical,] I will
support her efforts. If helping those of us with SCI earn her a
decent living wage, say more power to her--she's earned it.

I understand that there are people out there who take advantage and
greedily prey on people with disabilities, but in my opinion
requests such as this are not in that category.

I'll be happy to look at the survey and fill it out if I can be of
help. Good luck with your degree, Shanna.

I agree with Dan and Don for the most part. I think the results of most of
these surveys ends up being an extreme grasp of the obvious, but if it helps
an undergrad/post grad achieve their academic goals and I have the time and
gumption to complete the survey, I don't begrudge them if they don't offer
pay as an incentive and don't consider it presumptuous or an insult.
