Re: [QUAD-L] UTI's

2007-09-20 Thread Quadius
Angela,
I read through all of the responses and I think everyone has a good ideas.
Like Lori I had similar problems, but mine was complicated by the most foul
smelling urine I have ever had the unfortunate privilege to smell. It would
hang around the room 20 minutes after it was emptied.

Drinking plenty of water is vital. Blood in urine is bad if it continues or
if it's concentrated. I really think he does need to probably see his
urologist ASAP. Given what you have written there is a strong possibility
that he does have real big bladder stones or kidney stones. Once I had my
bladder stones removed in January I have been able to go for weeks without a
catheter change (suprapubic) and haven't had to your gate nearly as much as
before. I have also started taking apple cider vinegar every three or four
days as I am sure some people on here have suggested. (My doctor thought if
I tried it every day that my body would grow accustomed to it and it would
not help it significantly).

I also take 1500 mg of vitamin C (500 mg three times a day) in combination
with some cranberry supplements. All of this has minimized my problems, but
I do occasionally get a small tint of blood if I have had a drama, but
thankfully I am able to feel my bladder so I am aware if I had trauma to the
bladder.

As for cleaning around the suprapubic, I have my PCA clean the area with
saline and then I use Neosporin or some other antibacterial topical agent.

Once again, I think all of the ideas on here are good. I have tried citric
acid in the past and I also agree it is much better to make it yourself.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out,
Quadius

Yes, you can try irrigating or some say flushing with Acetic Acid(which is
the vinegar all ready mixed.)..I buy mine in bottles from the pharmacy, but you
can make your own and it's cheaper, but I don't flush real often so a bottle
lasts us a while. As far as the blood in urine goes...there are a few
bacterias that can cause some bleeding but also bloody urine can mean you got a
bladder or kidney stone, If the blood continues or gets heavier--you may want a
Urologist to check it. Dan

[QUAD-L] UTI's

2007-09-18 Thread Dan

*Angela,

How often does he change his SP tube? I change mine every 3 weeks. I use
a night drainage bag for 24 hours and then swap it out for one that's
been soaking for 24 hours in pure white vinegar. I wipe around the SP
where it enters my body twice a day with antibacterial wet ones twice a
day - morning and night. After that, I put a dab of antibacterial cream
around the opening.

However, it sounds like he may have bladder stones. His doc should do a
cysto to rule it in or out.

If you have blood in your urine after 3-4 days, go to ER. Make sure that
your primary doctor and Uro are aware. 40oz of water per day minimum. Vits C
atleast 2 mg a day but not all at once. Used bags can be cleaned flushed and
soaked in mild bleach for an hour and rinse well again. Soak/rinse with
white vinegar. Soaking is also good before you dry the bag, tube and
equipment.
Urine should be clear and lite yellow.
Dark urine can signal not enough water. Its could also be some of the meds
too.

I began having mild (lower abdominal pain, ugly urine) approximately 7 years
ago and then they became more serious a couple of years later (by going
systemic and causing fevers with terrible urine) and kept coming back and
kept coming back and became more frequent and then constant... monthly.

I have always hesitated to have any tests done because it is almost
impossible to get me onto tables without hurting me. Anyway, after four
years I finally had a CT scan done and it showed that I had several very
very large bladder stones and I had to have them removed. That was the
problem.

Urine should never look like dark red wine no matter what the lab tests

Urine differs from person to person. Some medications can discolor urine
and some products like
CranActin can make the urine cloudy. Blood in urine, is obvious. Determine
the cause if possible.
maybe you turned the wrong way or had a hard transfer. Has the cath been

The acidophilus that is in yogurt is what is good- especially when you're
pushing lots of antibiotics. The idea is to replace the bad bacteria with
the good bacteria we need to digest and prevent candida (yeast infections)
from growing. The problem with yogurt is all the sugar! Sugar just
encourages the bad bacteria and nasty yeast infections. You can get the
pro-biotics in capsules (in the fridge at the supplement store) that
include other cultures besides acidophilus. I never take antibiotics
without them.

Jessica, in the last two years I have had 2 UTI's. Prior to that I hadn't had

I read that several years ago and after multiple UTI's every year I became
extreme with hygiene. I was always good with hygiene but now I go over-the-top
somewhat. Changing sheets and washing more frequently can help prevent a
UTI's. Also being careful to keep the catheter sterile when changing it.

I get a UTI about once or twice a year. As long as we deal with catheters we
will get UTI's. I use a condom catheter but I still have to check the residual
in my bladder every month to six weeks. Often I have an infection that would be
critical to normal folks. I think most of us build up a tolerance to UTI's
untill they are pretty bad. You have to calculate a balance between a tolerance
to bugs and becoming immune to anti biotics.
I'm open to listening to anyone's news on the subject. I heard there was work
on a vaccine for certain UTI's. That was years ago and frankly, I haven't been
to see my uro in about 5 years. I just keep anti biotics (cipro bactrim DS)
on hand. I have a perpetual refill with his DA. I'd call him if I couldn't
clear it up.
Sometimes I do wonder if I'm septic but since I can't be sure without testing,
I won't know when I'm in end stage and with any luck, I won't know I should
have died.
I always seem to be pretty good untill they say I'm in an awful state and
should have died yesterday. I think some people die just because they are told
they are going to. I've been told I'm circling the drain since the day I was
run over. Maybe I'm too stubborn to stop breathing(or too stupid). But I
digress.
I think a good doctor would try to keep your infection at a mild roar and hope
you build a tolerance to the infection before you build an immunity to the
treatments available.

Hi Kathy,

So sorry that you are feeling so horrible Kathy. I do have UTI's with my
ostomy, I don't know if I have three per year as I don't really keep track,
which I should. They do make you feel horrible at first until you get the
proper medication. I always have it checked when the smell really changes, a
lot more sedimentation than normal or am getting a lot of spasms. They usually
always do a culture with me, so it takes longer. My visiting nurse tries to
come by quickly, when I e-mail her or call her. I'm glad I don't have to go to
the doctor to get cultures for my lungs or urinary. My lung doctor likes to
see me, which is very difficult sometimes as I don't have transportation
immediately, just when my best friend is off work, which he doesn't seem to
understand. I knew they have doctors to come to your home. I need to find out
if my insurance will cover which I really doubt.

I hope you feel better quickly. I know we always take a chance when we go out
among a lot of people to get viruses or colds, but I guess I don't let that
stop me. I like to get out as much as I can.

Get well soon as my friend.

RE: [QUAD-L] uti's and reusing catheters

2007-02-16 Thread poajoan
I use my catheters until it is obvious that they need a final burial. :-) I
have a small microwave in my bedroom, and I use a rubber 14 French, so
before each use. They are boiled for five minutes. Any bags that we use are
bleached twice a week, and I insist that anyone doing my catheterization is
using gloves. My catheters usually last for a month. Not only do we bleach
the inside of the bag, we bleach the outside too, so there is minimal odor.

As far as UTIs go, I have been so fortunate. Perhaps once a year my urine
smells or looks funny, and if it has not cleaned up within a day or two,
I'll get a urine sample and take it to the lab. As I mentioned before, the
only serious UTI I had was obtained in the hospital. Just fancy that!

We are just like anyone else when it comes to being susceptible to
infections. There is a great variation in our susceptibility, and if we look
back on our lives before SCI, we probably had the same type of
susceptibility to infections. I.e.: we very seldom caught colds, or we
always got everyone's cold et cetera.

I hate getting a cold, especially when it settles in my chest, and the
subsequent quad coughs and gunk cleaning that follows. :-( even though I am
exposed to many children's colds and coughs, I am fortunate that that my
resistance remains high.

I am outside a great deal, and luckily even in winter, I can still be
outside. Reno is a very high, sunny day place. So even when it is only 35°
out, I am able to go out on my back deck, which is sheltered from most of
the wind. The thermometer on the siding will often register 100°, even
though the air temperature is actually only 40 or 50. I really feel that
being outdoors has a great deal to do with my being so very healthy.

I was run over. Maybe I'm too stubborn to stop breathing(or too stupid). But
I digress.

I think a good doctor would try to keep your infection at a mild roar and
hope you build a tolerance to the infection before you build an immunity to
the treatments available.

Hi Kathy,

So sorry that you are feeling so horrible Kathy. I do have UTI's with my
ostomy, I don't know if I have three per year as I don't really keep track,
which I should. They do make you feel horrible at first until you get the
proper medication. I always have it checked when the smell really changes,
a lot more sedimentation than normal or am getting a lot of spasms. They
usually always do a culture with me, so it takes longer. My visiting nurse
tries to come by quickly, when I e-mail her or call her. I'm glad I don't
have to go to the doctor to get cultures for my lungs or urinary. My lung
doctor likes to see me, which is very difficult sometimes as I don't have
transportation immediately, just when my best friend is off work, which he
doesn't seem to understand. I knew they have doctors to come to your home.
I need to find out if my insurance will cover which I really doubt.

I hope you feel better quickly. I know we always take a chance when we go
out among a lot of people to get viruses or colds, but I guess I don't let
that stop me. I like to get out as much as I can.

Get well soon as my friend.
Dana

How many UTI's do the rest of you get?

Hi Dana and others,
I am glad that you don't have many UTI . After all the talk from the group
about kidney this and that I was feeling fortunate that I didn't have much
problems.
On Sunday I started feeling a little rough and I just thought it was due to
the fact that I had gotten out several times last week going to doctor
appointments and Walmart and lack of rest and my pain level is up. Monday I
started
having pain on my left side and down low. That night My urine had turned
red with blood. Now I am taking all those antibiotics that it takes to get

lets me catch up on some reading.

Hi Kathy,

After I read this e-mail, I remembered that the reason they tested me, in
85, when I was diagnosed with bladder cancer, was because I had blood in my
urine. I don't want to alarm you, but it might be wise to talk to a
urologist.
I don't know if others have ever had blood from a urinary tract infection.
I had not.

Have others had blood in their urine from a UTI? Is that normal with bladder
stones to have bleeding ?

Just wondering.

I have also had severe trouble with bad uti's the past few years, My new family doctor just told me I have 3 types of uti infection again this evening-- pseudomonas and endococca something another type i forgot the name. He is putting me on macrobid and levequin now.I just got out of the hospital in October for a pseudomonas utithat was my 2nd time in hospital to get IV drugs for that type of uti. I'm afraid they keep giving me to many repeated anti-biotics. Does any one know what options a person having an indwelling supra-pubic has ? My urologist who told me to get this supra-pubic now say's he don't have time for all the repeated uti's and to see my family doctor about uti's. I take cranberry capsules regularly and try d-mannose at times also vitamin c. but still can't keep these bad uti's away. Thanks T.C. for the ( Magnet info ) I'll look into trying them when I can get them.

I used to have uti's all the time. I had to stop taking or eating anything
with vit. c--do take a multi vitamin and as long as I do not go overboard
with vit C, can get by with an ocassional BLT or lots of catsup on
something.. Anyway, ever since I started putting my used catheters in a
bleach/water
solution to soak until it was time to boil them, I have had maybe 1-2 uti's
over a 2-3 year period.
That is with a urinary diversion or bladder reconstruction, what ever you
want to call it. I also was on a low anti-biotic dosage for a preventative
measure--did not work. Nothing worked until this bleach/water solution
was started.

Just another thought--- we buy ACETIC ACID professional manufactured
and sold in plastic bottles, it is the same as mixing but exact only thing
is it will cost more but lasts a long time anyway. Also this and the bottles of
sterile water we have bought give the expiration date. Just pour amount needed
in cup or bowl.and your bigger bottles of these products can last quite
a while.

Hope this may be of help.. *Dan*

I too have tried Macrobid as a preventative. I keep it on hand - have been for 2 yrs or so. Helps the smell of my urine/catheter when it gets skunky smelling at times but doesn't keep my UTIs at bay.

No side effects from it for me.

I used to irrigate with clorpactin (a chlorine irrigant like clorox!). And renacedin (sp?). But both, I'm told, need to sit in the bladder 5 minutes and I can't hold it. I wasn't getting UTIs then ... just sludge and sand.

I went back to vinegar/sterile water to keep my cath clear. No UTIs then. I best try doing that again with my UTI streak since stopping that daily routine. I stopped because my sludge/ sand decreased or diminished.

Hubby thinks pushing anything into the bladder isn't cool. But I didn't have UTIs then!

I've been on oxybut--otherwise known as Ditropan, since I was in rehab. I
take a small amount--
1 5mg, once a day. Used to take it twice a day, but was able to get down to
one a day. I have no idea if it even helps anymore. Its a bladder relaxer.
take care,

Dana and ?

Dan,
I have had similar experiences with urologists, but I found when I started
taking a very small quantity of Oxybutynin that this relieve the majority
of my pain. You may want to talk to your urologists about this.
Additionally, you may want to, if you already haven't, check into getting
a sonogram. The only other time I have had bladder pain which lasted for a
long time I had bladder stones. Good luck with your problem and if this
urologists doesn't give you any better answers than you will have to
learn to live with it, then I would agree you definitely need a second
opinion. Just my two cents.

Dan,

I am a c5/6 incomplete, 4 1/2 years post quad. Every time I would
need to be catheterized or if I had a indwelling catheter I would end up with a
UTI 100% of the time. I would be put on antibiotics and thenmy
bowels would get real loose and I would have nothing butmesses. I
use acondom catheter now and I have not had a UTI for approximately 3 1/2
years. Anytime I even think I'm having the start of a UTI, I try to drink
at least 90 ounces of water as fast as I can and then I go to bed and urinate
all night. When I wake up I am UTI symptom-free.
