H. That's strange. I use a good number of read filters and I have
never seen that problem. Do you mark your messages as read manually?

Is there an easy way to get the archives off of the old server without

It's a DNS server. It does the lookups for domain names and provide
you with the corresponding IP addresses. You may not need to enter
one. If Merury/32 works without your having to enter one, then just
leave it blank.

They kind of assume you already know these things. Not good. :)

The name for your system in this case can be anything you like. You
can get your current computer name by opening your system properties
(in Win2k/XP right click 'My Computer' and hit properties||in Win98
right click Network Neighborhood, select properties and look under
the 'identification' tab) and looking at the 'Computer Name' tab.

In the MercuryS module, did you enable the option to accept mail
from invalid local addresses?

In the mercury core module configuration, you can tell Mercury which
domains are to be considered local. You could add aol.com under the
local domain tab. aol.com would be the internet name and the local
host your computer name.

I just did a Whois on aol.com and got this:

DNS-01.NS.AOL.COM
152.163.159.232

DNS-02.NS.AOL.COM
205.188.157.232

As there was no work on the Connection Center from v1.61 to the beta

Hello Allie,

I downloaded the Mercury software, but came up upon conputerese
problems. I don't know what a nameserver is. I was actually able to
start the command prompt window in Win2000 and find nameserver listed
by running IPConfig /all. So it is working on my broadband account.
I really don't know what the internet name for this system is either -
and there is really no good explanations for these terms in help.

Anyway it's working on my computer at home, but I don't know why I
would use it here.

I can't however get it to work with the AOL account. I keep getting
the reply 'will not relay non-local mail'. I thought the mercury
bypassed this and sent mail directly. I'm not sure what to enter in
nameservers here or anything else for that matter. I did a Whois for
aol.com and got some IP addresses but it didn't say nameservers.
No matter what I get the same response - no relay of non-local mail.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try this as your filter string:

[PGP]

No quotes or anything. Just be aware that by enclosing the string
'PGP' in [], it will only act on ones like this:

My PGP is broken
PGP question

but it won't work on these:

What's the best version of PGP?
Is PGPi a better site to download from?

The brackets mean it must be a string unto itself, so the first
example of not working, the '?' breaks it, and in the second example,
the 'i' breaks it.

Thank you for your suggestions. I eventually found the message hiding

address it was addressed to and it didn't show up which was what was
worrying me. As I have 22 different mail accounts set up in The Bat!

was taking forever to search manually, especially when I had started

I'm not sure which version it started with - I bought 1.49 then
upgraded to 1.61 last month.

Getting rid of unwanted messages

2002-10-15 Thread Richard Wakeford

I have one rule in my Inbox to direct all TB! mail into my BAT folder.
I have then set up a separate rule in the BAT folder to remove any
messages that have, for instance, '[PGP]' in the Subject line and to
move any message containing that to the Trash folder.

The trouble is the rule doesn't work. I've also tried it in the Inbox,
put before the main TB! filter, so that the unwanted messages were
supposed to be moved to the Trash folder before the main TB! messages
go to my BAT folder.

The trouble is that version doesn't work either. I should perhaps add
that I have "Continue checking with other filters" selected too.

Anne,

There could be several possibilities short of the draft's just plain
vanishing. To start with the simplest possibility, could you have
been in an account other than the one you thought you were in? You
might search again (F7) for the message with broader criteria,
including all accounts and only one name or phrase you know to be in
the message. Until you find the message, don't compress any folders.
If you think it might have been deleted by accident, try Folder/Browse
Deleted Messages. Anyway, try the broad search; try the Outboxes of
*all* your accounts; try the Send folders of *all* your accounts; then
post back here if none of that works.

Maybe the Bat has made a new "Draft" folder somewhere in the common
folders... try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L to search for Lost folders.

I have tried the same and found my message in the first "draft" box
of the mailbox directly under the common folder... the
"Lost-Folder"-Key didnt work but you can try it too...

I just tried where TB left the draft and it stored it in the outbox of

So if you've got multiple accounts, check all outboxes.

I don't really use read filters, but something just sprung to mind so
I thought I'd suggest it.
Could you set up a filter that deletes the mail as the first read
filter, set it not to continue with other filters and then assign it a
hot key? Then instead of hitting delete you would just hit whatever
key you assigned that filter and it would bin the message and avoid
other filters.

Don't delete it, but flag it and set as option for your filter that
it's only triggered by unfiltered messages.

Create another read filter that deletes flagged messages.

This and the other problems could be easily explained by lack of
diskspace. I don't know why SB wouldn't react properly to
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L.

You could try to close SB, copy your folder structure to another
disk, delete all messages.tb? in your account tree. Start SB again,
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L again, see if it works now.
If it doesn't work, create your folder structure manually (Yuck!).
After you've restored your folder structure, close SB and move your
messages.tbb files into your new folder tree (take care that you
delete any existing messages.tb? files, both .tbb and .tbi)
Start SB to see whether it helped.

As I've never worked with SB, I'm just supposing the message base is
still called messages.tbb with a messages.tbi index.

Dear tbudl,

I had my SecureBat! installed on a small part of my partitioned

All of a sudden I couldn't send a message from my account malka.com. I
looked in the log, and it said that I couldn't receive either, because
there were no more space left on the account. I thought at first that
the problem was with our Internet Supplyer.

Several times The Bat! told me that there was a fawlt with folder

answering yes, but it seemed to give problems to the program, so I
answered no.

Then I shut down SecureBat!

When I opened it up again, about a 120 of my folders in malka.dk had
disappeared.

It seems that they are still on the harddisk. I have now moved
SecureBat!, but I still cannot see the missing folders.

I have searched the helpfile and the archive, with no luck. Have

The Bat does not properly perform TLS.

It fails to send an SMTP EHLO command before
the STARTLS command and hence will not be accepted
by most SMTP servers.

All of the TLS/SSL stuff in the Bat does not work AT ALL.
Whether it's for IMAP or SMTP.

I also use 658ckt, and I'm hybrid - the plugin for signing and
encrypting outgoing messages, because it can conveniently look
up the keys - but I strongly dislike the way the plugin decrypts
(does it store the decrypted messages in the database?), and use
the tray for reading messages. Enigmail's (Mozilla's mail client
GnuPG plugin) approach seems better to me on that score, but I
vastly prefer The Bat! to Mozilla Mail.

Replying to encrypted messages is only tricky if you haven't
mastered the clipboard - I just reply with no quotes, copy the
viewer contents from the clipboard and use Alt+Ins in the
message editor to paste the quotes, trim and reply.

It's not _perfect_, but I find I prefer it to the plugin, and I
get an immense amount of mail (about 10 a day are encrypted).

I haven't tried 8 yet, because as the source isn't available for
the beta, I don't trust it yet (I have adventurous plans for a
binary-only security audit, though, which I'm sure the new
owners of the source would appreciate in time) - though I am
glad it's finally out of the hands of NAI again.

I only have an 'any other' alternative. You could fire up your own
SMTP server that will deliver the mail for you. No remote SMTP
server to depend on. A good, fast, modular and freeware server is
Mercury/32. It doesn't incur much overhead, and I wrote a few pages
on how to configure it for SMTP services.

Look here:

http://home.ac-martin.com/mercury/merc32.html

Look under basic configuration for SMTP services.

When you're not on the road, you can switch back to using your ISP
server if you think the overhead is unreasonable and unnecessary if
you don't need to run it.

I dont think it does, it either operates on your local cache copy as
NAV does, or scans it as its' coming down, which is unlikly.

So I would guess it checks the local cache copy, as it is created,
provided the scan files or resident monitor is active.

ATT Broadband connections problems

2002-10-15 Thread slug

Hello All,

I'm using The Bat! 6.1 and am having problems sending mail through my
ATT broadband Webmail account when connected through AOL while
traveling. I can receive mail no problem. And OE set up like ATT
requires has not problems with sending mail either as described here:
http://help.broadband.att.com/faq.jsp?content_id=1753&category_id=9#traveloe.

I set up the smpt connection with authentication in the Account
Properties screen. I choose Secure to dedicated port (TLS) and choose
port 465 as listed. In the authentication box I check Perform smpt
Authentication, and use specific settings with my e-mail address as
the user with my password as well.

I only get a message in the Log saying Initiating TLS handshake and
then nothing more - not very helpful information.

I've tried all sorts of ways to configure this but to no avail. I
suspect it is a problem with the MD5 verification attempts (I have
this unchecked, but the documentation says The Bat! tries to do this
anyway) or the use of the user name instead of OE's use of account
name. Perhaps there is some sort of code to enter in the user box to
fix this?

If anybody else has a solution I would appreciate it. Or any other
way to send out messages through 'The Bat!' while traveling. My

I want to use The Bat! because it is better than OE, but if I can't

That's funny. Over here, the connection drops quite regularly while TB
is still checking mail. What happens is that the Connection Center
closes immediately, I don't have to wait for timeout. And TB closes
without problems.

Thanks, Raj, for that link: more evidence of the usefulness of

The digest comes in a very userfriendly form. My only problem is
that it is not as easy to reply to a particular post like yours.

But perhaps one of the old hands knows a solution to that too?

I'm not sure it reboots every time you update the VIRUS definitions,

I see what you mean, as I have the same problem sometimes. I need to

This list *can* seem very high-tech, & *can* be very busy, but if you
do what I did (and still do) it's extremely helpful. I immediately
delete anything that goes over my head (eg anything on RegEx) or
anything that doesn't interest me (eg discussions on PGP). From what's
left, I find that not only are my questions answered, but I also find
out about ways to do things that are much more simple or useful, and
features I never knew existed. If I were referring a fairly
computer-illiterate person here, I'd suggest they delete heavily &
only read as much as they're comfortable with. They'll soon find that
they're understanding more of the posts here :-)

I understand your concern but don't think creating a new list is a good
idea. The problem is that most users will get more advanced as time goes
by, your newly created list will be as techie as TBUDL is. It might be
possible to tell the more advanced users to move to TBUDL, but I think
that would demand pretty heavy moderation which will put the nice and
welcoming attitude at risk.

Besides, this will divide the user base of TB! into two different lists,
I think many readers won't bother reading both lists. That will result
in the common knowledge of TBUDL being divided by two, if you understand
what I mean. And, furthermore, the new users won't have access to the
heavy expertise present here.

Cancelling a job before closing The Bat!

2002-10-15 Thread Anne

The only annoyance I've found in the new version 1.61 of The Bat! is
the message box which appears if you try to close the program whilst a
job is in progress. Earlier versions had a Cancel option which could
be used when, for instance, if the program is checking for new mail on
a mail server but my PC had been booted offline before the job had
completed. Sometimes I don't want to go back online just then and
decide to leave the mail checking until later. When I try and close
the program this message comes up, "Some tasks are now active. Do you
want to exit when they are finished" with a Yes and a No button.
Regardless of if I press Yes or No I have to wait for the program
connection attempt to time out before I can close The Bat! I cannot
cancel the job as I used to be able to. Anyone else find this
annoying as well, or find a way around it please?

Thanks for your thoughts Jan - I personally think this is a great

Bat newbies list?

2002-10-15 Thread Anne

Hello all,

I'm fairly new to this list and having tried and fallen for The Bat!
which I find incredibly easy to use. I'm now busily promoting it to my
fellow listers in the genealogy community who are frequently users of
OE and fall victim to viruses fairly often.

Having had some success in promoting it I find I'm now answering
questions in personal mails helping newbie users set up and explore
the program. I found this list fairly recently thinking it may be a
place I can recommend they come for help, but having read messages for
a week I can see many techie/semi-techie discussions which would scare
them off!

Therefore what I really would like to know is if there is a help
mailing list for those who are brand new to The Bat!, who maybe don't
have much PC knowledge, are keen to learn, but don't want to be
outfaced by too much in-depth or techie stuff?

If there isn't such a list, then I'd be more than happy to start one
to help newbies get going - but I don't want to re-invent the wheel!

Any comments from all you *old hands* would be welcome though. Thanks
:-)

AVG needs restart, if are changes in program's core and they are not too
often. It is not needed to restart, if are definitions downloaded only.

BTW there is fourth beta of AVG7, which will be much better - it will
have incremental updates and better scanning/cleaning capabilities. It
should be released in November, as I know.

Yes but it *still* doesn't help my jump from one message, past all the
messages that have been posted in the meantime, to the original
message that it was replied to.

I've got them filtered by reference and using any of the other quick
keys just confuses the issue even more (at least it does for me) and
doesn't do what I would like. For example "A" posts a message. Several
others respond in various ways and then "X" replies. By this time the
original has moved way up (or down) the list and I want to be able to
jump straight to it and then back to the reply again with a single key
stroke (or combination) and missing out the intervening messages.

Seems like it's not possible.

That's what "thread by reference" helps you with. It groups messages
and their replies in cascading threads. Not all clients provide the
correct "In-Reply-to" and "References" headers to help you to do
this, but it works in many cases.

If you're filtering these messages into the same folder, you can find
the original message fast by viewing threads. The way to view threads
can be altered in one keystroke.
 <0> no threading
 <1> threading by references
 <2> threading by subject
Threading by references is the easiest way to find the immediate
original, but some mua's neither support the references header nor the
in-reply-to header, so for those you'll need to thread by subject.

When you're not filtering the messages into the same folder, you're
out of luck with TB.

That's not what I want though. When a new message arrives in a folder
(it doesn't matter who it is from) I sometimes want to be able to read
in full the original message and, sometimes, the original to that one
too without having to scroll through all the other messages that have
been posted between.

For example "A" posts a message. Several others respond in various
ways and then "X" replies. By this time the original has moved way up

It appears that it is not possible and I suppose I will have to accept
it :-(

Select a message that you replied to (visualized by some arrow icon on
the envelope) and hit Ctrl+Backspace, that should work.

Can you move to the original message?

2002-10-15 Thread Richard Wakeford

Hello,

I've looked through all the key strokes and cannot find a way to be
able to toggle between the reply that has just been sent and the
original message. I would like this as, sometimes, the messages are
far apart. Even though there is quoting to help it is sometimes better
to read the original message in full and, with Ameol, pressing "O"
took you in sequence back through the messages in the order they were
replied to.
