2009-04-15 Thread Joshua Gallant
I have no link with dates but this was in the recent U2 news flash
email:

 U2 University Planning Status

As reported earlier in this News Flash, the U2 Team is hard at work on
U2 University
2009. Current status is as follows:

Denver, USA, September 16-18, 2009 -- Confirmed!
Liverpool, UK, October 13-15 -- Confirmed!
Sydney, Australia, November 17-19 -- In Process

Please note that we've moved the Denver event back one day. We hope to
confirm Sydney
shortly, at which time we'll let you know how to register. We'll also
publicize the agenda
once it's been finalized.

Re: [U2] U2 University San Francisco

2007-11-14 Thread Bruce Gauthier
Hello Susan,

I am enrolled for U2 University as a first time attendee.

On two separate occasions, I asked IBM Teach if it is required to sign up for
individual sessions (on each of the three tracks) in advance. I received two
different answers: yes, and no.

Since I have not found any place on-line to sign-up for the individual
sessions, I assume that the sessions are held on a first come, first serve
basis.

If that is the case, can you tell me whether or not full class sessions are
an issue? Do I need to arrive to the sessions early to ensure my place?

Thank you.

Nancy, If you are on the fence about whether it is a worthwhile investment,
I would certainly encourage you. I have picked up a number of tidbits that
are helping me EVERY DAY, not even to mention the really interesting
high-brow stuff about efficiency and disaster recovery and then the
help-me-plan-for-the-future stuff of seeing what's coming next. Putting
faces on names is a bonus, too. Getting a chance to be HEARD, that one gets
a gold star.

These are incredibly informative and educational sessions on a wide variety
of topics all crammed into a very affordable three days. Everyone I've
talked to at them has said the same thing.

Bruce,
I should also add that you don't have to stick to one track. Also, if
you decide that what is being covered is not what you expected you can
switch to another session. Or use that time to get certified. They also
have a free limited range wireless connection if you need to stay in
touch with the home fires during the breaks.

1) there is no mechanism or need to sign up for individual sessions at U2U
2) There is room for all at all sessions. No need to fret about it.

I attended the one in Denver and there was no signup for any of the
classes just go where your interests lie. Unless the rooms are really
small, or the session is of great interest, I doubt if you will have
trouble getting to go to any of the classes. Some of the classes of
greater interest are duplicated so if you want to go to more than one
class at a particular time check the schedule, there may be one of the
classes repeated later in the week. Also don't forget to take advantage
of the certification tests.

current enrollments are a bit higher for the NY event (expected - as it is
sooner - and we have seen a last-minute spike in registrations for prior
events).
Looks like there will be a good sized crowd at both.

Also - there is no enrollment cut-off date per se. Of course, we prefer
sooner rather than later to make sure everyone can be accomodated.
In Denver, we actually accepted and enrolled one 'walk in' student (if you
don't mind a hand-written badge... :-( ).

I'll be presenting at both NY and SF. See you there!

If you can, send at least two people. There are three tracks, each with
15 sessions. A few of the main ones are repeated, but one person can't
learn everything he/she would want to.
It was a well put-together show, even if one or two of the presenters
were overworked (at least for the Sydney show), and most of the
attendees to whom I spoke went away with their brains bulging - if not
hurting.
Also a great opportunity to catch up with the U2 community, who nowadays
seem to meet far too infrequently.

RE: [U2] U2 University in Sydney

2007-09-13 Thread David Jordan
I recently attended the U2 University in Sydney. I would recommend everyone
tries to attend whether end users, resellers or ISVs.

IBM U2 division have been putting a lot of effort into RD and there are a
number of new technologies that will change your thinking in development and
continued use of U2 into the future.

I will steal some of Susie's thunder and point out that U2 grew 14% last
year so this is not losing edger technology. How many other database
vendors can talk about double digit growth?

The new IBM .Net provider for U2, allows you to do with U2 what you can do
with other RDBMS including store procedures, etc.

The EDA facility to extend to other databases is looking very mature and
functional.

So don't miss out learning about these new products.

Regards

David Jordan

I thought I'd give a shot at answering some of Doug's questions about the
new U2 Developer (aka GUI Basic IDE).

Is it backward compatible to Universe 9.6 or UniData 6.1?
It will require you to install some Basic routines on the server but
should work with older versions.

Has it been tested by over 700 users?
No, it hasn't been released yet as part of the Early Adoption Program,
but it will soon.

Has it been test on Mac, Windows, Linux and Fedora?
No, see above. Also currently we have a dependency on a piece that runs

on Windows-only. That would have to be resolved before we could run on
other platforms.

Can you update the product using Eclipse's Update Manager?
   We are looking into it.

Does it work on Eclipse 3.3 and Eclipse 3.2?
   Runs today on Eclipse 3.2

Does it run on Java 1.5 or 1.6?
Runs today on JRE 1.4 and 1.5 (aka 5.0)

Can we test that Editor today in a real world environment?
No, see above but watch for our announcement of its availability in our

Early Adopter Program. Subscribe to the U2 News Flash if you haven't
already and you should see it there soon.

We are glad to have feedback from those who see this at U2U and those who
will sign up for the EAP, especially those experienced in this technology.

We have a number of existing and planned Eclipse-based tools and are
looking forward to leveraging our experience to build this new tool and
going back to our existing tools and integrating some or all of this tool
as appropriate into those.

And we're glad to have partners also providing modern development tools
for U2--there cannot be too many good tools!

Okay, it's for me. I guess I'm getting too lazy to copy and paste... Which
is quite a stretch because I use Linux, and all I have to do is highlight
something, and it's put in the clipboard. No right-click, select an option
nonsense. (please no flames; I don't want to be shunted off to 'community'

Symeon, Sorry that would be me. I am on the road right now doing the U2

Dear List,
I'm on offender? In a league of offenders!? While I certainly try not to
miss an opportunity to offer information (including product information) to
anyone asking for advice or a solution such as mine / in my area of
expertise, I do try to keep it to a dull roar, only spoke when spoken to or
about, bracket an ad if it's an ad and generally follow the rules! I
frequently offer unbiased information and advice that I have learned in the
course of providing a commercial product to our industry. And no one has
ever complained before (in fact I've received feedback that was quite
opposite to this recent post!), so if I was blithely offending, I never knew
it!

I sincerely apologize to anyone on the list who feels that I've abused the
list or offended the listers. Except Doug, who is offended for his own
reasons and who is actually the person who was chastised.

And to add to the actual discussion underway - I agree, U2U was a truly
worthwhile investment of time and resources. Great classes with amazing
amounts of information being disseminated!

Wally,

In my first post, I said I thought it was great. I am looking forward
to all the new tools that IBM is working on getting to us. I love the
graphic editor that compiles on its own with its templates you can use
and add to. To those who have used the UniDebugger, the new tools is
similar but better.

I didn't want to give much a way as I think people who can attend
should, plus there was so much information you get a little overload and
don't remember everything.

I am a little disappointed in the flash drive with the event documents.
I was not able to attend the UniAdmin class due to the fact I was taking
the certification testing at that time. Side note: Yea, I got over my
fear of tests (unreasonable I know but we all have our little quirks)
and am now a certified UniBasic programmer and a certified UniVerse

Any way, the UniAdmin class pdf does not show any of the new tool coming
our way. I would have liked more info in the pdfs.

availability for Universe and there was no commitment other than soon
after Unidata 7.2.

I was a bit like a duck out of water, being that I have a very limited

Eg, there is a session about file tuning - would I be bored? Similarly
about testing - we have been doing that for a long time, and unless there is

I didn't attend the file tuning, so I can't comment on it. I either was
in another class or it was one of the one's I skipped to do the
certification testing. The other on testing I also did not attend, I
attended the Extended basic session. However, that was a little
disappointing as it was just a overview of the new class IBM is
offering.

I loved the U2 for geeks, even if it is stuff our company had little use
for. If you do any accessing of data in other systems, then the 2

Kate,
Just about every course I took was outstanding. The tuning courses are
great, the introductions to new advances let's you know that U2 is here
to stay, and you also get the opportunity to get certified in
programming and administration. Even if you were certified previously
you can get certified on administration of the newer revisions of
UniVerse and Unidata, as well as other IBM products. All-in-all I would
say it was a great start to what I hope will be an ongoing thing.

RE: [U2] U2 University Last Week In Denver

2007-09-05 Thread D
Jerry,

I'm confused. If you are so hot on Eclipse based tools why have you not
tried our free U2 editor? It has been out for over year and half.

That U2 Editor you saw at the U2 University will not be out until first
quarter 2008 for Unidata and later for Universe. Here are the questions you
should be asking.

Is it backward compatible to Universe 9.6 or Unidata 6.1? We doubt it!
Has it been tested by over 700 users? We doubt it!
Has it been test on Mac, Windows, Linux and Fedora? We doubt it!
Can you update the product using Eclipse's Update Manager? We doubt it!
Does it work on Eclipse 3.3 and Eclipse 3.2? We doubt it!
Does it run on Java 1.5 or 1.6? We doubt it!
Can we test that Editor today in a real world environment? We doubt it!

We are the only company in the U2 market that has the programming expertise
and the years of experience that has been producing and selling Eclipse
based tools. We are updating our U2 editor and other tools on a daily basis
and giving them away.

What are you waiting for?

Regards,
Doug

I'd also like to add that everyone better start looking into Eclipse
because some great things are going to be built on that platform. They
are also looking to recruit developers and users for an advisory group.
So, if you have some things you would like to see added to the products
this is your chance.

Did I say anything about an editor? They are building more than an
editor using Eclipse. I don't want to steal their thunder but it appears
that their whole front end will be built on Eclipse and we will have the
ability to create our own plug-ins to add to it. I haven't tried your
editor because I haven't needed to, I am happy with WED.

I've been doing communications work with MV for many years I believe mv.NET
is the best software in its class. In short, it's backed by a great
company that is constantly improving it, support is great, the price is
reasonable, it's cross-MV platform, the experience of using it for daily
development is excellent and comfortable, and the quality is excellent.
We don't like it because we sell it, we sell it because we like it, and
when my clients and colleagues finally take a look at it they almost
inevitably adopt it. Even IBM has purchased a license to maintain their
own version of mv.NET. What more do we want from the tools we use these
days? I'll be happy to discuss this with anyone who is interested.

Until recently I wasn't sure where I'd be on the planet when these things were
scheduled. Now that my own schedule has firmed up I can advise that I am
enrolled for the Sydney event.

There's never really been one before, so it's hard to comment. Last year it
was part of the huge Information on Demand show in Anaheim, and kinda got
buried among all the other products. The standard of the U2 presentations was
good, however, and you get to take a shot at the certification exams without
having to pay!

The only bit of advice I would have is to bone up on current terminology, for
example it's now U2 Web DE rather than RedBack.

My understanding is that the UK price will be changed to #500. Still more
than the US ones but better than the #650 shown on the web site and
reflective of the fact that it will be more expensive for IBM to deliver it
in the UK than in the US.

Wally,

Since your audience is truly international and we are all spread out across
the globe rather than located in large groups in a few places, would IBM not
be able to reach far more attendees, and at far lower cost to both the
attendees and to IBM, if these sessions were presented as Webinars?

Just think of the number of people who will not attend your classes, the
number of people you are missing, due to location issues, schedule issues,
contiguous time away from the office issues, cost issues etc..

Conventional classroom training has to be the least cost effective training
model available, given today's technology.

How much more often could you run these sessions in an updated format if
you could run them as webinars?

How many more people could you reach if you ran them once a month for a
nominal fee per session?

Aren't we all in the business of providing critical information in a timely
and cost-effective manner?

Dave

The U2UG board were discussing webinars at the last meeting.

FYI IBM are starting an interesting ball rolling with some podcasts coming
out in the next months - personally I think these are a great idea because
a) they are low tech b) I can listen in my car c) they tend to be a little
more informal (I had a good CD of podcasts from Microsoft when .net 2.0 was
first released) d) they are simple and - e) without video - well, let's just
say some of us are less than perfectly photogenic...

Webinars will take some organizing and even if they are real time you miss
out on all the other stuff that a good conference brings (the face to face
and foyer discussions), but we're definitely interested in getting some off
the ground and we've already put some topics on the table.

The only problem will be time zones.. I already have to hold the board
meetings at midnight and unfortunately I lose the power of cogent speech
around pumpkin time..

I would definitely urge everyone to attend their nearest venue.

The price is extremely reasonable (especially compared with the other IBM
conferences) and these things need to be supported. I'll certainly be
attending the London event, and looking forward to meeting as many fellow
members as possible.

So please get the word out - If you know any other U2 users, who may or may
not be members of this list - please make sure that they know about these
events. They may not hear it from their vars..

We've been petitioning IBM to bring back some U2 events for some time - now
is the time to stand up for them.

What I think people, like myself, are after is more of a real world
example where you can be lead through it and then hopefully then apply
the technology and best practices to the business problems at hand. It
is all very well being told this is a hammer, nail, piece of wood, go
build a house. Some people are DIY and want to know how, even if they do
not end up doing the work. To cover this is such a short period of time
would be impossible, hence a nicely worked examples, easily accessible
and downloadable would be great.

Knowing how the components should be put together in a real world
situation is the key. So that people on this list do not get frustrated
and move elsewhere.

Cheers,

Phil

I agree with Phil. My other concern is that these are going to be closer to
sales pitches rather than how to's. I'm hoping there won't be too much
this is was it'll do in the next release.
