[users] DOCX file

2007-12-09 Thread James Knott
Does anyone have a Word document in the new DOXC format that I can test
with? It doesn't have to be anything special. Just some text from
somewhere (such as this list), perhaps with a bit of formatting, saved
as DOCX. You can send it direct to my email address.

tnx jk

[users] openoffice documentation or bug?

2007-12-09 Thread Henry Ballard
I am using openoffice 2.3 - just downloaded it and installed it this week.

In calc, I was trying to search for something more than a simple string -
looking at the documentation of the regular expressions supported, I found
that searching for M was fine but [M] is not found - it says #value (???).
Then I tried =SEARCH(M|I;Misty)
and that doesn't work either. Then I tried
=SEARCH([:alnum:];Misty)
with no different luck. So far, I'm wondering if any regular expressions work.
Or maybe there's some trick. Or the documentation is misleading.

Any insights?

Thanks,
Henry

I'm running OO 2.3 on a Windows XP Pro machine.

My spell check no longer works. Its loss was quite random. I haven't changed
any settings recently. It was working fine earlier today.
I had changed myself over to Canadian spelling many weeks ago. I tried
switching back to US spelling. No spell check. I tried downloading the Canadian
dictionary and switching back. Nada. I tried up grading to 2.3
Same problem.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. To no avail.

*The rest of this is me being a little funny, don't take it to seriously*

Now. I didn't want to have to do this. but, I'm left little choice.

I have, in my hand, a Microsoft 2007 DVD. I didn't want to go over to the dark

this terrible error, and I can rejoin the beautiful Open Source Writing

First you didn't buy OpenOffice from us. We don't sell it. At all.
There is a list of CD vendors on the OpenOffice web site but none of
them has anything to with us. That's because we are a collection of
*users* of OpenOffice from around the world who donate some of our time
to helping other users.

Second, you didn't need to *buy* OpenOffice. It's free from
www.openoffice.org. That's free to download, free to use, free to give
to others. Support is free via this group. Documentation is also free
from the same web site as the software.

Third, OpenOffice does not have a component called DIA. I have a
complete installation. No DIA. Also no libgtk-win32-2.0-0.dll. The
components of OpenOffice are Base, Calc, Writer, Impress, Math and Draw
which correspond approximately to Microsoft's Access, Excel, Word and
PowerPoint, with Math and Draw having no equivalents. the libgtk file
seems to be part of another free software package named GIMP. It's an
image processing package. You can get it from
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ if you want.

Fourth, this is a public mail list. It is read by thousands of people
and its messages are archived in myriad places. You may decide in future
that including personal details like postal address is not a good idea -
there are villains out there.

I suggest you contact the company from which you bought the CD and
complain. If it won't help you *might* have recourse through your credit
card company, assuming you used one to pay for the CD and depending on
the laws in NZ.

In the meantime I suggest you remove the software you have installed
(Control PanelAdd/Remove Software) and then download and install the
proper version from the OpenOffice web site. If, having done that, you
still have problems, by all means come back here with details.

Dear Sir/Madam;
I have an HP Pavilion dv6140us Entertainment PC. Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 2...

Around January/February 2007 I installed OpenOffice.org 2.1, then upgraded to
2.2. There were issues I was experiencing; I therefore uninstalled the versions
located through Remove/Change Programs in Control Panel. I noticed however the
icons for both openoffice.org files still existed in the Program Folder located
on my C Disk Drive. I recently downloaded OpenOffice.org 2.3, and I was
experiencing problems with QuickStarter to Launch the software (I was not
having this particular problem prior). Yesterday I uninstalled OpenOffice.org
2.3 through Remove/Change Programs in Control Panel. I also deleted all of the
openoffice.org icons located in the Program Folder as mentioned. Due to an
unusually slow processing speed after installing the 2.3 version, and repeat
problems with the HP Launch software included in my PC purchase; I decided to
uninstall my favorite office suite, OpenOffice.org.

I want to run a Registry Cleaner Program now primarily because my ZoneAlarm Pro
detected enough spyware (some from HP and some from OpenOffice.org) to cause
concern. Please offer me some suggestions/assistance as to reinstalling
OpenOffice.org 2.3.

Thank-you, so much;

try to run and install it I get the following message:
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could
be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want
to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.

I disconnected from the net, disabled AV and firewall I still can't install the
program.
I would buy Star Office 8 (I have Star office 7 but don't like the way I have
to work with the data base, I have used Microsoft Access and want to work in

independent of the spread sheet. I was supposing the new Star Office 8 would

on the Table toolbar, you can click the AutoFormat icon to open the
AutoFormat dialog. Some of the AutoFormats have an alternating color
for rows or for columns.
You can define your own color pattern for rows or columns in a table,
then open AutoFormat and add that design to the list.

Hi,

Does anybody know a good way to realize alternating shading in tables
in OOo-Writer? It would be a nice trick to make long tables more
readable, but it's quit boring to alternate the background-colour of
every second row by hand.
on the Table toolbar, you can click the AutoFormat icon to open the
AutoFormat dialog. Some of the AutoFormats have an alternating color for
rows or for columns.
You can define your own color pattern for rows or columns in a table,
then open AutoFormat and add that design to the list.

Re: [users] Windows Explorer slowdown

2007-12-09 Thread Uwe Fischer

Hi,

S Fuhrmann wrote:
I recently experienced a massive slowdown of Windows Explorer (MS
Windows XP) when changing directories. With the help of File Monitor
(sysinternals.com), I found that explorer.exe tried to open
shlxthdl.dll and was looking for it in all directories specified in my
path. This took very long and was the cause for the slowdown.

I am not sure why explorer.exe tried to access that dll file (which
belongs to OpenOffice), and I don't know how to turn that off. I could
only resolve this issue by uninstalling OpenOffice, which is obviously
not the ideal solution.

I am not a programmer, but if your system cannot find that file in the path,
why not copy that file to one of the first folders in the path? For example,
copy the file to windows\system32

Also, Google shows some more info about this file, for example in
http://openoffice.exblog.jp/1162654/

Hope this helps

2007-12-09 Thread W Keryluk
I would like to use Open Office and especially Impress however after trying the
program noted one major limitation for my use. In Power Point when I include
video clips in a slide presentation I am able to start and stop the video as it
is playing by simply left clicking it with the mouse. This is very helpful in
education presentations as the video can be easily started and stopped as it is
being played. In the Open Office Impress I note that this is not possible and
that the entire video segment must be played before it is stopped. I also
noticed that when the slide presentation is selected the embedded video plays
immediately. I prefer the option that allows me to left click on the video to
start the video presentation.
Any comments or referral you can provide is greatly appreciated.

I can't speak about what's available from them, however, I usually reply

Selling OpenOffice

It is entirely legal to sell OpenOffice. Many vendors sell a CD for a
nominal amount and provide a valuable service for those who cannot
download OpenOffice. Others charge more and may offer other benefits.
There are some, who charge for a download link and who should be

OpenOffice is available as a free download from www.openoffice.org and

It sounds like you're on a dial up internet connection. There's not
much that can be done about the long download time. Your alternatives
would be to download it somewhere else, such as work or a friend's,
where broadband access is available and then use a CD or USB drive to
transport it to your computer, or you can purchase a CD from a vendor.
There are many vendors listed on the OpenOffice site, but we can't vouch
for any of them. Also, occasionally, some magazines include a CD
containing OpenOffice.

I' ve to tell you that something may be doesn't work correctly on Java file
included in OO. Problems with some macros in Calc. No problems, instead, using
the original JRE.

[users] Features of Open Office Suite

2007-12-09 Thread F.R(olf) Simon van Leeuwen
I am interested in using the Open Office Suite as an alternative to Microsoft's
products.
My system:
PC with Windows XP and broadband internet connection
My main requirements:
Facility to read, update and produce Microsoft-compatible files and rtf
documents now and ODF documents later. The tables feature in particular must
be compatible with Microsoft's version.
Spelling and grammar checking in Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish and
Russian.

[users] [moderated] YOU MUST GIVE A SUMMARY HERE

2007-12-09 Thread Dave Ash
I recently upgraded from openoffice 2.2 to 2.3.
Every time I open an existing spreadseet I get the following message:This
document containsmacros.Execution of this macros is disabled due to the current
macro security setting. Therefore some functionality may not be available

I do not know how to fix this. Can you help, please.

At least twice now I've tried to register my new download of Open
Office. I'm directed to a questionnaire - which I fill out, and when
finished I see nothing more about registering the software. If
completing the questionnaire IS registration, you should say so. If
not, you should explain what else is required.

 download?

To open DOCX files, you need both the Word Viewer 2003 and Compatibility
Pack, which are available from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090.
The Compatibility Pack will also update older versions of Microsoft Office.

[users] bug in Format and Styles menu

2007-12-09 Thread Bob Stites
I am using OO Writer 2.3, and want to report a bug in the format-styles
menu. The help file tells me to display the format styles menu by
clicking an icon on the formatting menu. There is no icon like the one
shown in help. I found one that looks like a finger on a piece of paper,
but it doesn't display the sf menu, nor does the formatstyles format
pull down menu, nor does f11. I noticed the right edge of the document
moving slightly in each case, and found that when I moved the right
margin to the left, the menu became visible, otherwise it remains hidden.

It is enough to drive you nuts, and should be fixed.

I am still having the same problem with Japanese. If I find the solution I'll
post here. And I'd be grateful if you were to do teh same!

FWIW I have got a Japanese desktop to run with English OpenOffice.org. But I
want the other way round - and it would be useful if OOo could do both.
Though I would settle for OOo Japanese, and having to use a different word
processor for English.

 Hi

Is the Open Office Suite 2007 that is available on the www-openoffice.com
site for sale at $47 different than your OpenOffice.org suite. Is this a
 competing product of another organization.

 Thanks

 Simon
Hi Simon,
No, I don't believe there's any difference. You can download the latest
Openoffice 2.3.1 at no charge from this link.
http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/index.html
Just click on the green area, select your OS and download. Congratulations!
YOu have just saved yourself $47 by having the good sense to ask. You'd be
surprised at how many people don't.
Enjoy Openoffice,
Jonthan

While I can't comment on the lanquage issues, OpenOffice should be able
to do what you want. You can configure it, so that it saves in
Microsoft formats by default.

Some functions in OpenOffice require Java. You can either download
OpenOffice, with Java included or go to java.com to download and install
it separately.
