Re: [VFB] Old Farts Fly Swap.

2023-05-14 Thread Pete Gramp
I just tried sending my submission from my camera and ring light setup, and
I'm not sure if it went through or not. Could someone please let me know?
I'm not seeing anything sent from myself to the group, so I have no way of
knowing if it went through.

While here, I might as well say the recipe for the fly:

Hook: 7xl streamer
Body: orange floss
Rib: 11 wraps silver oval lagartun tinsel
Throat: 5 to 7 fronds bronze peacock herl overlaid first with yellow then
white bucktail
Wing: baby blue hackle "pad" overlaid with slightly smaller grizzle[y]
hackle "pad", with excess baby blue showing above grizzle[y]. (The original
says grizzle, I added the y, and I added the quotes around pad, as it means
a pair of hackle tips)
Cheek: Mallard flank or teal extended long, 1/2 to 3/4 the shank length
(Optional, I omitted): Cheek overlay, jungle coque
My fly's head is WAY more pronounced than I would have liked, but hey...
I'm an old fart and the eyes are going on me...
Hope the picture went through OK.

Re: [VFB] Re: I'M still kickin'

2023-04-26 Thread Pete Gramp
Hi all -
I'm still alive and kickin' as well, finishing up my last week of graduate
studies before I earn my MSci degree in Drug Discovery & Development from
Drexel University, PA, USA. I get to look like a Papa Smurf sprinkled with
grass clippings when I get hooded during the ceremony... the robe is a
light shade of royal blue, the cap is white, and being in the medical
college, the hood is green. Quite a sight to behold... But I'll finally
have that parchment on the wall. After I graduate, I'll be taking a little
time off to fly fish (of course!) and then will be hitting the job search
like there's no tomorrow.
The old farts swap intrigues me, but before I commit to participating, can
someone give me more details? What type of fly, when is it due, do we
simply post it to this list or do we email the picture(s) and recipe to a
swapmeister/ host who posts everything en masse, those sorts of details?
Great to hear from you all and see the list active again,

I was very close with Don, and this just hit me like a ton of bricks.
Though we’ve been separated geographically a little bit now, it can be said
that my closest fishing buddy just passed. We shared a special connection
in that I got him in touch with a doctor to treat (out of respect for him,
and his family, I’ll just say) “a severe nerve issue in his jaw” that made
him “saddened” by the pain. Regardless, he took my son under his wing and
was tutoring him in the ways of rope dubbing and fly tying in general. I’m
still a bit in shock. He will be sorely missed.

Re: [VFB] Dirty Bug Yarn

2020-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
Al -
Only 6 more years til the oldest goes to college, so... there's a chance?
;) In the meantime, there will always be my study/office and the formal
dining room that we won't use as such - will be where the kids do
homework, just without a table or desks (they're both autistic, trust me,
it works better that way). When we went there to look at the lot, there
were browns and rainbows sipping duns and spinners (or dries of some
variety, possibly emergers?), and this was in the middle of November
which is very odd given the season. I did go to the SUV and get the stream
thermometer and it read 49 degrees F... The creek is known for sulfur and
tan caddis, though not this time of year. I didn't see a hatch going on,
but MAN am I dreaming about it already! My son is equally excited. My
daughter is still very young, in elementary school, but has been asking me
if I could teach her to fly fish once we move in May. So... you might have
to fight for a good spot haha! But you're always welcome (once we move, of
course).

[VFB] Dirty Bug Yarn

2020-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
I haven't seen any emails in a long while on the VFB, perhaps because of
the USA Thanksgiving holiday, but I have to share this. On a whim, and on
the recommendation of a fly tying buddy of mine, Tim Cammisa (you likely
know him from his YouTube videos), I tried out a new SemperFli product
called "Dirty Bug Yarn". At first, I thought this to be "just another
yarn," but it is anything but that! It comes in mottled colors, one of
which is as close to a 477 match as I have ever seen, and it comes in a
thinner-than-Antron-yarn, two-ply "strand" (though if it is 2-ply, I guess
it is a cord and not a strand). Somewhere between embroidery yarn
thickness and a single-ply of Antron yarn for thickness. Very minimally
shaggy - just enough, but not "chenille" shaggy. More like "mole fur
dubbing noodle" or "thin superfine dubbing noodle" fuzz. It is there, but
not much. The thing with this stuff is that it blends really well - it
doesn't look like you wrapped a cord around a hook. It looks like a
single, continuous body that is perfectly mottled and buggy looking. I
find it perfect for just about all small to medium gamefish flies (trout
and grayling is what I have in mind) from emergers to nymphs, dries to
parachutes. I even caught an 11" rainbow on a mini-bugger (size 14) with
this as the body material. That is about the biggest I would push it for
the hook *length,* though (not hook size, but length) because the dirty bug
yarn doesn't add much bulk to the hook, and it looks weird if you have a
very long and very skinny hook. At least, it looks odd (or "under-dressed"
to me. JStockard (jsflyfishing.com) carries this stuff - no affiliation,
but I know it isn't easy to locate, so that's the only reason I mention
this. But I would encourage you, if you have 5 quids to toss towards this
product, definitely try it out! The mottled colors not only look great
from a "fly fisher's" perspective, but they truly do catch more fish from a
"fish catching" perspective!
Again, I have no affiliation with SemperFli, JStockard, or anything
mentioned; I just wanted to rave about an awesome material that is a
game-changer for me.
Hope you are all well,

[VFB] Source for Seal's fur dubbing in the USA?

Hi, VFB!
Is there a *legit* source for seal's fur dubbing in the USA? Like, not
having to deal with CITES permits or risking run-ins with law enforcement?
For that matter, is it even legal to possess and use seal's fur dubbing in
the USA without a CITES permit or the likes? If not... boy, I am glad the
little I have from Scotland has a CITES permit associated with it!!

Just looking for new colors, as what I have are 2 colors, both dark (jet
black, dark olive nearly dark-brown), and nearly impossible to dye the
orange and cobalt blue I'm desiring... There's a featured pattern in the UK
Flyfishing & Flytying Journal that I'd like to try my hand at, that's why
I'm seeking these colors. Technically I could use sheepswool dubbing as an
alternative, but I was never fond of that stuff, and I don't have that
besides. And the sheen just isn't the same for sheepswool dubbing. I
suppose I could also use pigswool but that is too kinky/curly in my
opinion, and besides, I only have about 0.1g left (flattened out, the size
of a 50p piece, or a little bigger than a US quarter) in off-colorations
for that option.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide for seal's fur sourcing - legit
ones, in the USA,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Health and weather

2020-02-18 Thread Pete Gramp
Been lurking a bit, so I felt I should send an email.
I'm working full time (from home) and in a Masters degree program (online
100%) at Drexel University full time. It doesn't leave much time for
fishing, but I never was one to brave the cold temps to fly fish much.
Mid-terms are coming up, and for one paper, the professor is preventing the
use of 1st person pronouns as well as prepositions. I can understand the
1st person pronouns being removed, as that is common - state the facts, and
leave the "feelings" or personal opinions out of the paper. But
prepositions? That is absurd. Here is an example I have of what the
resultant paper will contain:

Example:
"What are you doing, Pete?"
The prior version of the response:
"I'm eating with the family."
Professor's version of response:
"Eating the family."

Therefore, I must conclude this professor is pro-cannibalism.

True story, I just saw it through to its "logical" conclusion...

Re: [VFB] Czech Nymph Books

2019-12-31 Thread Pete Gramp
Thank you so very much, Nev! I now have three new books added to my
wish-list! With starting graduate school (for a MS in Drug Discovery &
Development at Drexel University, PA, USA; classes starting 06JAN2020), and
working full time as well, I unfortunately am placing fly tying readings on
the back burner temporarily... well, I should clarify, they will be read
when I need some time to remove stress and unwind. But my focus will be on
schoolwork and on working full time, while the semester runs its course.
With little luck, I will be able to make it to the Fly Fishing Show in
Lancaster, PA, USA on March 7th, 2020, but as that is right around the time
of mid-term testing, we'll see how it goes. The Edison NJ, USA show in a
few weeks is, sadly, not possible for me to attend - at least for this
year. Regardless, I hope to purchase some of these books you mentioned,
and use them to unwind during my off time, on days when a fishing trip
isn't possible.
Thank you again, ever so much!

Re: [VFB] Suggestion for Paper Books with Czech / Euro / Jig nymph patterns in them

2019-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
That would be amazing, thank you so much, Nev!

The pleasure was all ours, Peggy! I greatly appreciate you taking time to
speak with my autistic daughter. She's getting into tying, despite her
young age, but has been asking me (direct quote "Isn't tying and fishing
only for boys?" so I'm thrilled to have had several women speak with her
while she was at the show. I don't know if we'll have her join my son and
I at the January or March shows (Edison, Lancaster), depends on how she is
those days... but we'll see. She thoroughly enjoyed it, though! She
wanted me to say thanks to you.

Thanks to you both,
-Pete

[VFB] Suggestion for Paper Books with Czech / Euro / Jig nymph patterns in them

2019-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
Hi, VFB folks - hope everything is well with you -
My son and I went to the International Fly Tying Symposium in Parsippany NJ
(USA) a weekend or so ago, and we both really enjoyed the flies tied by
Czech nymph master Jan Siman. My son is asking me why there's a shortage
of books that speak about fly patterns tied in the realm of Czech nymph,
Euro nymph, or just jig nymph patterns, and my best guess is because
everything these days has gone digital - that is, everything has shifted to
instagram, facebook, or YouTube.

So with that hunch in mind, I'm reaching out to see if anyone knows of any
books that have a wealth of patterns specific to the Czech nymphs, Jig
nymphs, and/or Euro nymphing styles. We can always use youtube, sure, but
what we're after is a paper book. That said, if you know of a particular
tyer or channel on instagram or youtube, or the likes, please let me know
so we can check it out - if they deal specifically or mostly with those
types of nymphs, please.

Thanks, everyone!
-Pete

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-25 Thread Pete Gramp
I just read the post of the fly from the journal, and I stand corrected -
that fly would certainly work in the waters where I fish. Now to get that
embroidery floss, or to find a retailer of SemperFly material... I'm on a
quest, I suppose! Any info on retailers of the material in the USA (sent
straight to me) is most welcome.
Thanks for sharing the pattern!

Which issue of the Flyfishing and Tying Journal was it in, Joyce? I can't
seem to locate that fly in the Winter 2019 issue, but I may have missed
it... you have my curiosity going here. From the name of the fly, I doubt
I'd ever fish it, based on the water types I fish most often (very narrow,
slow flowing brooks and streams with trout of max size ~10 inches in
length)... but you never know, if tied small enough, they may work where I
fish :) And besides, I tie spey and atlantic salmon flies in 6/0 size and
goodness knows I'll likely not fish those any time soon! Some day, I hope,
but not any time soon... unless I win an all expense paid trip or something
haha.

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-24 Thread Pete Gramp
Thanks, Neville and Tony, for the complements! It isn't the most realistic
or fanciest fly I've tied, by a long shot, but it does show some progress
being made. I hope to get back to tying realistic flies in the weeks
ahead. Coupled with traditional Scottish Lough flies, they're my
"specialty" of sorts. Or at least they're what I used to be able to tie
fairly well... Not sure what I want to tie in that regard to get back in
that realm - may start simple and do some Oliver Edwards flies. We'll see
how it goes. For now, I'm toying around with the new mayfly nymph bodies
and legs from Risen Fly company - or rather, I have the materials as of a
few days ago, and plan to work with them today. They look quite buggy, and
coupled with Flymen Fishing Company's extended shanks, I'm going to try my
hand at some jointed extended body mayflies. Always challenging myself
with these eyes of mine, I suppose... it's the only way I'll get back to
where I once was, I figure. Like learning to ride a bike all over again,
but it'll happen, I'm confident of it.

On a different note, I was all excited and ready to go to the international
fly tying symposium this last weekend, and then my wife realized it was
2.5hrs drive time each way instead of the roughly 2hrs to Somersett NJ
(sp?), and for whatever reason that extra half hour each way was a thorn in
her side for driving me out there (I'm not allowed to drive with the
epilepsy), so she got cold feet so to speak and cancelled the trek out
there for the day. The Edison show is a maybe for January - if I do go,
we'll get a hotel room for the weekend - but the lancaster show is a
certainty. At least I can get in some show or another this season :)
Sorry if I missed seeing anyone at the tying symposium last weekend.

I hope everyone had wonderful holidays / Thanksgivings,
Tight wraps,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Birthday wishes

2018-11-16 Thread Pete Gramp
Have a break between 2 doctor appointments this morning, so thought I'd
send this message - Sorry for the late reply, but thanks to all for the
birthday wishes - had a wonderful 40th birthday! Even had some cheesecake
- ok so some sugar-free cheesecake flavored jello brand pudding cup, due to
the diabetes, but my imagination made it close enough :) Have since been
back to work, albeit 20hr work week, since Monday, and will be back to full
time (40hr week, though with the thanksgiving holiday it is not the case)
this upcoming Monday. Hoping to get to the International fly tying
symposium tomorrow but not sunday (only due to church) but may be forced to
sit a lot of the time at the featured tyer presentations and the likes...
we'll see how I hold up. It is one thing to work from home at a desk the
whole time... another entirely to walk around a show... so we'll see how it
goes. My wife has been saying that all four of our family is going into
the show, so this may be interesting... with a 5 year old rambunctious kid
in the mix, it will be very interesting... I'm optimistic though. :)
Again, thanks everyone for the well wishes and birthday wishes!

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-10 Thread Pete Gramp
Tied some lively legz nymphs this afternoon. By "some" I mean 2. But in
all fairness I was chatting with my son the whole while and he tied with
me, also lively legz nymphs, also 2 of them, and we made 2 batches of
rabbit fur dubbing using a coffee grinder method, and he willingly spent
about 2 hours helping to clean up the tying room a bit (it needs another
couple full days worth of cleaning... but we made a dent on it), so I
can't knock it one bit. I found my 6 packs of various shades of whiting
tailing packs / coq de leon, which I couldn't for the life of me locate up
until today, so that made me thrilled. If I make it to the International
Fly Tying Symposium in New Jersey this next weekend, I hope to pick up some
more CDL tailing packs - I may have 6 packs, but the quantity of remaining
feathers in those 6 packs is next to nil, and I use them all of the time
for tails on my dries.
Anyhow, all in all it was a great tying session.

[VFB] Out of hospital, and now looking for fly patterns

2018-11-04 Thread Pete Gramp
So my not-so-brilliant body decided it would play a trick on me and would
suddenly go into what the hospital staff called "DKA" - Diabetic
ketoacidosis - which essentially means that while the blood sugar levels of
a "normal" person are in the 70 to 100 range, mine were 1085 when I was
admitted to the hospital and rushed immediately to the Emergency Room and
then passed to the Intensive Care Unit. Two weeks later, and 43 pounds
lighter (supposedly from my organs eating themselves, and the muscles
around them, and not from fat loss), I was discharged from the hospital and
told I'm now a diabetic in the "severely diabetic" category with blood
sugar levels still in the upper 200's to lower 300's. Still on short term
disability and off work, until they get my blood sugars back down in the
more "normal" range.

Biggest pain in the neck, besides my general weakness, is that my eyesight
comes and goes with the blood sugar levels. I'm told this will get back to
normal when my blood sugar levels return back to more reasonable levels,
but for the time being, I am struggling with tying anything smaller than
size 12. and to be honest, size 12 is kind of a challenge too, but I
refuse to go much larger than that.

Does anyone have any *relatively *simple fly patterns that they could send
me off-list for some size 12 flies (dries or nymphs preferred please, as I
have plenty of soft hackles and streamers and I don't have much opportunity
for use of salt or salmon and my eyes aren't up for traditional wets or
full dressed atlantic salmon or spey, etc.)? I'm not looking for the
simplicity of a san juan worm, but then again, I'm not much better than
that with my eyesight right now... perhaps it is wishful thinking that I
say I wish for something a bit more complex than that... but I desire a
challenge.

Thanks for any suggestions in the way of patterns you can send off-list!
-Pete

[VFB] What are your favorite online pattern resources?

2018-05-04 Thread Pete Gramp
I've hit a weird funk where I sat down at the vise (or vice) and didn't
know what to tie. I have a library of multiple hundred books, some of them
encyclopedias of fly patterns, and yes, I had no idea what to tie. Tyer's
block, much like a writer's block, if you will. So that got me to
thinking: what are your favorite, or most used, online preferably - or
written in print - sources for new patterns, to keep things fresh? If you
say "Youtube" please be more specific - which channel do you view, and what
about that channel holds your attention? I'm not looking for great fly
*fishing* videos, though they are very cool to me, but I'm seeking recipes
for fly *tying* patterns, or step by steps, that are geared specifically
towards the tying of a multiplicity of different flies.
I look forward to hearing what folks have to say - this may be interesting!

[VFB] Unsolicited praise of a little mom and pop business

2018-03-26 Thread Pete Gramp
I hope that this is OK to post on VFB, but I just had the greatest
experience with a relatively small mom and pop type fly fishing business
and wanted to spread the word.

So my son's 10th birthday is Thursday, and we had planned to get him a rod
and reel combo. Not a "Walmart special" cheap-o type. but a legitimate,
well-made rod and a reel that could take the abuse of a 10-year-old. We
decided that the Genesis rod and Armor reel from Risen Fly company, while
being a lower-priced rod (100 dollar rod or so) and relatively lower priced
reel (I forget how much it was, but guessing 80 dollars US? maybe?) were
the right choice for my son, after having experience with other rod makes
in their product lineup (I own a 23PS and an ITB, and can vouch for them
being well made graphite rods). Again this is unsolicited, and I have no
personal gain by stating this, and I have no connection with the company
besides being a happy customer.

The "story" is that we pre-ordered the rod and reel combo back at the
beginning of the month, with hopes it would be to us in time for my son's
birthday. Well, as manufacturing timelines would have it. the reel was
delayed, and Risen was going to hold the order until everything was ready.
I reached out to Ryan, the president and owner, and asked if there could be
a split order, and that I'd pay extra for the shipping and handling. He
surprised me by not only jumping on the ball and shipping out everything in
the order except the reel yesterday, a Sunday (and they are a
Christian-rooted company, quite firmly if I do say so), but he waived the
fee for extra s, AND he said he threw in an extra birthday gift for my
son, free of charge. I must admit that I have yet to receive this
shipment, so I don't know what the extra gift is, but I mean - anything
over and above is worth a praise in my book!

Their website is risenfly.com and I know they have a loyal customer in me!
Disclaimer - I'm just a happy customer; I'm not advertising for them, not
promoting them *per se*, just stating a good experience I had with them. I
get nothing out of doing so, and I have no connections with them besides
being a happy customer.

Thanks for listening to this story of my experience with a company "doing
it right" - and then some!

[VFB] First guided trip, any help / suggestions welcome

2018-02-27 Thread Pete Gramp
So my wife totally floored me and said that I could take a 4-day weekend in
June, after the kids' and her schools let out (she's a teaching librarian
in the local high school) to fly fish some semi-local waters with a guide.
I've selected Spring Creek and/or Flyfisher's Paradise, near State College,
Pennsylvania, USA, which is about a 3 hour jaunt from where I reside. I'm
in contact with Josh Miller, of Team USA Fly Fishing, to guide me and
hopefully instill some knowledge on euro nymphing, which I'm a baby at (or
whatever you'd call someone who doesn't even make the cut to be called a
novice... at least when it comes to euro nymphing... at least... I've
fished dries almost exclusively for my fishing career, and done remarkably
well with them, but considering the relative percentage of food that is
under the surface, I'm no dummy and am eager to learn the ways of the
nymph. I'm no Nate Brumley...)

So this is my first ever trip using a guide. I'll be practicing my casting
on the back lawn, using the rod and reel I intend to take with me on the
trip, just with an old fly line. (Fishing for grass carp, I suppose? ;)
) but besides that, what should I do to prepare, or what can I expect
during the trip?

Also, he has yet to get any sort of pricing to me. Not sure what to do
regarding tip, either - any suggestions? I realize it is based on the
quality of the trip, and if he loads me up with flies or something like
that, I'll obviously pay extra, but I wanted a general ballpark figure.
Just a closest hundred or 200 bucks (USD) or so. Just so I have an idea of
what I should be aiming at for a tip.

So I have no idea what to expect from a guided trip, and am looking for any
"guide"-ance you can provide.

Thanks, everyone!
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Late Bugger Swap -- flies were send

2018-01-27 Thread Pete Gramp
Bout of the flu here, and not done the flies. I respectfully ask to drop
out of the bugger swap. One day I was perfectly healthy, worked a 14hr
day, next day I've got something that tests positive for Inf B on the fast
test for flu. I am on Tamiflu, but don't want to delay the swap any more
than it already is. Unfortunately, I have a backlog being created at work
while out, so I wouldn't have much time once over this flu to tie flies, at
least for a week or so, so I'm going to have to be "that guy" and drop
out. I apologize profusely. For the record, I jokingly blame my getting
the flu on the 14hrs of work and lack of fishing... though in these temps,
it wouldn't have helped matters to be fishing in the cold...
Thanks for understanding,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Rope-dub bugger swap

2017-12-20 Thread Pete Gramp
I have from tomorrow through the 25th off from work, though I doubt I'll
get many tied on Christmas eve or Christmas, with the in-laws visiting
overnight... Hopefully I can get these tied up by then. I'm sorry to say
that I only have 3 tied so far. I've been experimenting so much with what
rope dubbing can do that I've not been tying for the swap! Eek! I'll fix
that tomorrow, and will start cranking them out first thing in the
morning. What with my time-sensitive and odd-timing-to-take-it seizure
meds and all, I'm up at 4am, so I have a bit of time before the kids are
awake and "bugging" me.
Happy holidays to all,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Testing, testing... Rope-buggers Picture Palettes

2017-10-15 Thread Pete Gramp
Hi, Don -
I have a question about hackle on your rope dubbed buggers. I've been
tieing in the hackle by the tip at the curve of the hook bend, roping the
dubbing but keeping the hackle out of the rope, rope-dubbing the dubbing,
tieing off the rope-dubbed dubbing, then hackling palmered hackle (not
roped) in the creases made by the rope-dubbed dubbing. But after reading
what you sent, it leads me to think that you actually rope the hackle
itself... can you speak to that? First, whether you did rope the hackle,
second whether it is roped with the dubbing en masse, and third can you
speak a little to how this method actually is, well, how it works? I can't
picture it happening - wouldn't you get a great deal of the hackle fibers
trapped under the rope and sticking every which way, if you roped the
hackle? or is that the point, to have them at variate lengths (due to
being trapped under the rope) and to have the hackle fibers sticking at odd
angles to the shank of the hook, all bushy-like? I suppose with flowing
spey hackle, it isn't as noticeable as with, say, dry fly hackle, but I'm
intrigued with this possibility for both instances (I realize we were
speaking of wooly buggers, which aren't exactly in the "dry fly" realm...
by any stretch... but I am asking more as technique than strictly for the
buggers).
Thanks, Don!
Keep on tyin'

[VFB] Mustad Bugger hook suggestions?

2017-09-23 Thread Pete Gramp
Howdy gang -
For being someone who prefers Mustad hooks, you would think that I'd know
this, but I sheepishly must admit that I simply don't fish buggers, and so
ask - I just won a free 100-pack of Mustad hooks in a raffle from our local
club (to obtain from our local shop) (along with some other tying
goodies). What is the right hook model / appropriate hook model to use for
a wooly bugger? Yes, yes - I know, I'm in the wooly bugger swap... I've
tied them before, albeit maybe not on the best choice of hook model, but I
want to challenge myself to actually tie more of them and gosh darn it,
actually fish one already after my 24+ years of fly fishing! I'm thinking
the R73-9671 is what I'm after, but wanted to ask for people's opinion on
hook model. Likely tying in size 8, assuming the shank is the appropriate
"wooly bugger streamer-length" long.
Thanks, everyone,
-Pete.

Re: [Shaw Suspected Junk Email][VFB] Late 2017 swap intro

2017-08-31 Thread Pete Gramp
By "bugger" you mean that this is a wooly bugger swap, right? If so, is
there room remaining? The hardest part will be finding hackle of the right
size... I'm not used to tying much larger than a 12 these days, and my
hackle is mostly saddles with very few "big 'uns" for the wooly buggers.
Time to go to the shop for more hackle!! As if I needed a reason...
Body would be a metallic green, pseudo-peacock herl... but a shade lighter
in color than the natural stuff, just barely. Dubbing similar to ice dub,
but sourced from Fly Tyer's Dungeon (no affiliation, just stating the
source for the material).
Let me know if I'm in, please,
-Pete

[VFB] Health update

2017-06-28 Thread Pete Gramp
Well, they had me on the gurney for gallbladder removal surgery, and then
the surgeon reread the ultrasound and bloodwork and CT and so on, and
wanted more tests done (I think one is called HIDA, and there are two
others I won't pretend to be able to type out correctly)... so for those
who are aware, from my facebook close friends list, the surgery was
cancelled for the gallbladder removal, pending further tests.
On the up-side of things, the surgeon poked and prodded all over my gut
with just his gloved hands, and now this may be a placebo effect at its
finest, but after 2 months of pain and uncertainty what it was, to be
without any pain there, hey I'll take it! It makes absolutely no logical
sense to me how simply poking in my belly is going to make the pain stop,
but indeed it did (maybe I had gas...haha) but seriously, I have no
explanation for it - yet there it is, two days since he poked for a good 2
or 3 minutes straight, and now no pain. Like I said, I'm chalking it up to
mind over matter, as in my mind playing tricks on me, but hey, I'll take no
pain over the pain I had any day! Now don't get me wrong, we still want to
figure out what caused the pain in the first place, and what's up, but I
thank my Lord for this blessing of no pain, and that I didn't have to go
under the knife!

Just wanted to let those of you who may not have heard, know about this
update.
Oh, and to keep it related... Fishing trip to Manchester VT and then
Oakland/ Waterville ME (both USA) is still scheduled for 2 weeks in July,
(if near either location, private message me if you'd like to get together
and/or if you can recommend fishing locations to go it alone with extremely
mild wading conditions, preferably from the banks/ shoreline of the streams
and rivers for trout and the likes) and hopefully this mess doesn't keep
our family from that vacation / holiday.

Hope this finds all of you well,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Substitute for Tiemco 2499SP-BL?

2017-05-30 Thread Pete Gramp
Sounds very cool - and much more in my price range. I'll try a 25 pack out
to test out the hooks, and if I like them (which I suspect I will) I can
always get a 100-pack at a later date. Truth be told, I'm a sucker for the
packaging, and I like the idea of the hook holder that the 25-pack comes
in, so that is part of why I'm starting out with a 25 pack haha. Many

stealth hooks prior to now.

[VFB] Substitute for Tiemco 2499SP-BL?

2017-05-29 Thread Pete Gramp
Does anyone on this list know of a cheaper alternative, or similar hook, to
the Tiemco (TMC) 2499SP-BL? I saw the "Nitro Caddis Pupae" on
www.intheriffle.com and would like to make a batch up, but I don't know
that a standard curved scud hook will do the trick or not. the 2499SP-BL
is 3x heavy, 2x short, 3x wide, at least according to one site I found them
on... though it was in a foreign language so I don't know if I was reading
that correctly or not. One seller on amazon said it is 2x heavy, 3x wide,
2x short, so I may go with those specs. Either way, it isn't exactly a
standard scud, or a rounded-out klinkhammer hook either. A substitute
could have a hook barb, I can crush barbs like the best of them, that isn't
a problem, it doesn't have to be barbless if it saves a few bucks. I just
can't pull the trigger to spend 12 bucks on 25 hooks for these, but maybe
it's just been so long since I've bought hooks that this is the going price
now... I've been fortunate to have stocked up on literal thousands of hooks
about a decade ago, and haven't had to buy hooks in ages... so the price of
a hook may have gone up from what I remember it being back then...

Someone set me straight, if this is the going price of hooks these days,
but I'm a cheapskate looking for a cheaper price and thought hooks were
less than 48 cents US a piece. I realize it was 10 or 11 years ago, but I
bought mine at a little under half that price. Has prices escalated that
much in 10 years, or is it because of the special nature of the hook, or
something else I'm not thinking of?

Thanks for any help you have, and tight wraps,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] SWAPS both sent out today

2017-04-21 Thread Pete Gramp
As busy as I have been at work with the 18hr shifts (I'm in
biopharmaceuticals/ health sector), during the times I'm willing to fish (I
don't fish when dark, personal preference and there's some safety-related
reasons involved as well - sleep deprived and wading in the dark makes for
bad situations), I have always found time to tie flies during my off-work
time, albeit sometimes only one or a few flies at a time.

Having started out in this great sport by tying at the age of 14, and not
picking up a fly rod until my college years, I did things a little
backwards from the traditional progression of things, and so I must confess
that I get as much, if not more, pleasure out of the act of tying for the
pure fact of tying for tying's sake, compared to the fishing act. Don't
get me wrong, I covet my days on the water, and love catch and releasing a
good trout just like the next guy. But for me, tying is my daily reprieve
from the stresses of life, that can be done at any time of the day.

There's three things I always make time for in life: firstly, spending time
in the Word, with my God, secondly spending time with my wife and kids, and
thirdly, tying at least one fly a day, in that order. I think of tying
flies as a sort of mental therapy, without which I would be a mess; it
calms me unlike any other activity could, gives me clarity and focus in my
world, and the way I go through materials, it costs about the same as a
therapist would :)

Perhaps each of you share the same sentiment on tying, perhaps not and
fishing itself is where it is at for you, but I am just glad that we can
share our love of this fine sport together.

2017-04-20 Thread Pete Gramp
Work has kept me from posting about this until now (job security, but
man-oh-man the hours are killer! Still have yet to be on the water this
season...), but I received a set of wonderful flies for the dry fly swap -
except for that one that I got back tied by myself. I'll use that one to
get the fish to laugh so hard that I can scoop then up while they're
distracted with their laughter.
...Or something like that...

All kidding aside, well done, everyone. I can't wait to copy these!

Oh, and I must confess, I took some liberties with materials on my fly,
compared to the original pattern, or at least the pattern as it exists in
its current state as *considered* to be "original", but I tried my best to
keep the general idea, and impression given by the materials the same (i.e.
speckled CDL tail in place of "darkly speckled champagne spade hackle
tail", and a single strand of embroidery thread wrapped 6 times used in
place of "a tag of six wraps tightly corded, sparse and defuzzed, thread
made of pig wool, of color muted brown with olive"). Send to me off-list
if you want the so-called / considered original recipe, and let me know
where you acquire such materials if you have a source for them.

The recipe is one handed down through the generations on my maternal side,
which is in fact Clan Campbell of Cawdor (Scotland), and I do not know how
"authentic" the recipe I have is, that is, how true to the original it is
(it has had something like 13 generations of 'whisper down the lane', and I
don't doubt that it started as a wet fly and ended up as the dry fly it is
today much later down the line), but it is still a neat little pattern to
tie up. And it catches fish!

Thanks for putting up with my circumlocution about this family fly, and let
me know off-list if you want more info about it.
.
Tight lines,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making

2017-04-04 Thread Pete Gramp
I see your point (barely, I mean, they *are* size 32s after all), between
Tiemco and Mustad 32s in size difference, but in my view, either one is a
challenge that is something beyond my grasp - at least for any time in the
foreseeable future - and tying on either one is something worthy of
admiration. To tie on the smaller of the two, I guess the Mustad correct?,
would indeed be far more challenging, but that does not mean that the
Tiemco is by any means "easy to tie on". Like I stated before, I've only
ever tied down to 26's and even that was a challenge for my big mitts and
failing eyes.

DonO - You mentioned that you tied on a blind eye / naked eye hook, yet the
two hooks in Nick's picture appear to have eyes. Am I missing something?
Is the hook you used eye-less, or am I misunderstanding your use of the
words "naked eye", or is the hook not a Mustad or Tiemco, or is there some
other situation I'm just not thinking of?

Can't wait to see that video!
-Pete

Re: [VFB] #32 Mustad Royal Coachman Video in the making

2017-04-03 Thread Pete Gramp
I am anxiously awaiting that video - I can'r say I've ever tied anything
smaller than 26, mostly because I never felt that fish would take anything
smaller, but I admit also because my skill level just isn't there for it.
I can hardly fathom tying a 32 of any type (tiemco, mustad, any type), much
less a naked/ blind eye!

I've used caenis thread on 26's, and that was "big" thread for those (in my
opinion), I can't imagine the special materials you had to procure to tie
that small of a fly. Any insights into the materials - were any "unusual"
or special for the task?

Well done my friend!

Re: [VFB] Dry Fly Swap update 2/1/2017

2017-02-02 Thread Pete Gramp
Tying mine up on Saturday when at the in-laws' place... they're fine with
it, even promote the tying. (I have the best in-laws ever!) Likely doing
size 14 klinkhammers with a sighter / indicator post, as a challenge to
myself to get the proportions right, but if I can get the time to tie a
dozen of a more "traditional" / "classic" pattern as well, after those,
then I'll toss in an extra dozen from Mike Valla's "dry fly box" book...
but in the interest of time, I'm focusing on just getting the Klinkhammers
done first and we'll go from there. I mean, I don't want to hold up the
swap, but if I can crank out 2 dozen over the weekend, which should be no
problem, then that's what I'll do.
Thanks!

[VFB] Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy?

2016-12-31 Thread Pete Gramp
Anyone ever hear of a pattern called a "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy"?

Passed by my local pond and saw another fly fisher there (rare) just
reeling them in (very rare), hand over foot, thankfully catch and releasing
or I'd need to find myself a new local pond to fish - he was catching that
many - but when I stopped by to ask what he was using, he gave a sly grin
and said an older pattern called the "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy". I
shouldn't be as surprised as I am, but seeing as it was a fellow who looked
fresh out of puberty, pimples and all, I was a bit surprised he was using
an older pattern. He never did let me get a look at the fly, so I'm on a
"quest" of sorts, to find a pattern recipe and example photo to get an idea
of what the end product should look like and how to tie it.

Thanks, gang, any help is appreciated!
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Lively legz

2016-11-29 Thread Pete Gramp
Apologies, I didn't mean for it to come out poorly, I meant no disrespect.
Only wanted to see if we were speaking of the same thing is all.

I've used hopper legs from River Roads and have had great success with
them, when tied as hopper legs. I think I'll give it a try for tying in
foam, short, to make nymph legs from them. I'm always open to new ideas
and I admit I never would have thought of that had you not mentioned it.

Ever learning, with plenty more yet to learn,
-Pete

2016-11-27 Thread Pete Gramp
Two people asked for a link, off-list, so I'll provide it here - hopefully
that's ok?
http://livelylegz.com/collections/lively-legz

Again, no affiliation, I don't get a cut or anything, and my offer for free
legs for the "cost" of either emailed pictures of flies tied with them,
and/or emailed recipes of flies tied with them, is still open. I'm just
providing this info to those interested.
Thanks, and hopefully I'm not out of line in sending these emails,

Re: [VFB] Dry Fly Swap

2016-10-18 Thread Pete Gramp
Is a klinkhammer qualified as a classic dry? Been trying to get my
proportions down better for the thorax spacing on those and thought this
swap would be a good opportunity to challenge that. If not, then I'll tie
up an intentionally over-hackled fast-water thorax dun that has been quite
productive for me, with a synthetic dubbing I created from scratch. Either
way I'm in (just one entry for 10 flies), but let me know if the
Klinkhammer is ok or not, please.
Thanks,

Re: [VFB] Swap

2016-10-17 Thread Pete Gramp
I'm interested in a dry fly swap. Personal preference is that I would
prefer if not kept to classics, and I reserve my official "signing up for
it" until I know how many I would need to tie up... more than 12 or so and
I'd have to think twice about it to make sure I'd be able to meet deadlines
- Don't want to be "that guy"... But I am interested, if you're planning
on hosting this and the fly count is a dozen or so..

I did. That's a very kind offer of yours, but totally unnecessary. That
said, can someone tell me when the next Sowbug is in 2017 please? Would
like to know how long I have to save for it.
Thanks all,

I would love to come to the Sowbug, believe me, but funds being what they
are, it isn't going to work out for coming from PA to Sowbug this year. I

[VFB] Sparse Grey Matter Fly Tying Festival?

2016-10-05 Thread Pete Gramp
I was cruising the net and heard of a fly tying event called the "Sparse
Grey Matter Fly Tying Festival" somewhere in New Jersey, USA that is held
annually (assuming it is still going on?) and the video I saw was from
2012. Does anyone know, first, is this still something that is going on,
and second, where can I find details for the 2017 festival / show? New
Jersey isn't too far from where I'm at, here in PA, and I tend to favor the
tying-themed, as opposed to fishing-themed, shows. Plus it could be yet
another show to add to my growing list of shows to attend. Going to try to
make the November Somersett International Fly Tying convention, the other
2017 somersett show, and the Lancaster PA march 2017 show. Yep, it is only
the start of fall here, and I'm already itching for the shows.
Unfortunately, funds are keeping me from the Sowbug this year, yet again.
On my bucket list, one of these years.
Thanks for any info on the "Sparse Grey Matter Fly Tying Festival",
-Pete

Re: [VFB] re: Whiting hackle bad colors

2016-07-03 Thread Pete Gramp
I used to like Denny Conrad's hackle, not sure if the company he sold to is
doing the same quality - just haven't looked into it, honestly. I recently
got two capes and two saddles from Collins Hackle farms, grade 3 but ties
10 to 18 for capes and 12 to 16s for saddle, the whole lot of it, all 4
items, were 60 bucks (plus whatever trivial amount postage was). A note,
though, he doesn't wash the feathers. He claims it retains the oils, which
is good, true, but it also doesn't clean off the, well pardon my language
but, chicken umm "waste". I think that's the most politically correct way
to word it? Excellent, beautiful colors, high barb count, sturdy yet thin
stemmed, some of the best hackle I've worked with honestly. Can't praise
his hackle enough.
When I went to order, I called him, spoke to him personally, had all
intentions of buying a grade 1, he said don't waste your money get 2 grade
3's, they'll tie the sizes I want in the same quality, I just won't get 20s
and smaller. He helped me select the color, asked what look I wanted for
the flies, etc, gave me some background on the hackle itself - very
knowledgeable guy, willing to share but isn't cocky or shoving info down
your throat or a "used car salesman" type. Honest guy, wanting to please
his customer. I couldn't praise him more, and will be back as soon as I
save up (admittedly will be a while) for another cape-and-free-saddle combo.
Just my 2 cents worth, I'm sure there are plenty of other fine hackle
suppliers out there but Collins is my new personal favorite.

Re: [VFB] Burgundy Thread

2016-07-02 Thread Pete Gramp
I'll check out the UTC, sounds perfect. I haven't tried it yet. I have to
be honest, most of the reason I shy away from tying salmon flies is that my
rough hands tear the silk to shredded frayed messes. I think I'll try the
UTC but stay clear of the silk thread - just my personal preference, not
that it is a bad suggestion in any means, I'm sure it would be perfect, but
with my sandpaper mitts, and knowing what silk thread costs *typically*,
I'd prefer to not even try it. Just my preference, no offense intended.
Thanks for the UTC suggestion, I'm going to pick up a spool and try it!

[VFB] Burgundy Thread

2016-07-01 Thread Pete Gramp
I've been looking for a Burgundy thread that is *either* 70 denier *or* lies
flat with minimal bulk. I typically use Uni 8/0 or Veevus, if that helps
any, but I'm not loyal to any one brand over another. Cheaper the better,
yes even though we're only talking about a few bucks a spool, but I'd
prefer tying thread to sewing thread... Can somebody point me towards
something in that color range? More of a maroon-burgundy than
wine-burgundy. (Danville has a wine, but that's too purple for what I'm
seeking).

Alternatively, anyone know of a marker (make & color) that would color
white uni or veevus to that color range?

Thanks guys,
-Pete

[VFB] Suggestions for PFD?

2016-05-26 Thread Pete Gramp
So here's the deal. I have epilepsy, have had roughly 0 (good days) to 6
(obviously bad days) seizures a day for the past countless months, and the
neurologist says the only way he'll let me fish is from shore, and even
then, with a "good" PFD (personal flotation device) and with another person
present. I could always ignore the doc, but I'm not the type to risk
that. Kinda stinks, especially since I'm a "big boned" and 6 foot 6 inch
tall guy... finding a PFD my size has been difficult. Anyone have
suggestions for a "good" PFD on the cheap, preferably that doesn't restrict
casting, but cheap comes first, for a US size 4XL?
I get it, I'm big... no I don't play basketball, nor mini golf. But I do
fly fish. :)

Any suggestions on PFDs welcome,
-Pete

Re: [VFB] Thread Colors

2016-05-07 Thread Pete Gramp
I've been asked to give a serious list, so I'll say that I use Uni and
Veevus (uni because it works with the diameter of the inner hole, to work
with my first generation ekich bobbin, veevus because of preference of the
thread). Colors are burgundy (visited "Slide in" fly shop and he got me
started on that trend), black, white (admittedly for use with markers, but
it is a color so there it is), pale yellow / lt cahill (goes by different
names based on which company makes it), camel (tannish-brown), and olive.
There you have it!
Tight wraps,

Re: [VFB] Just curious - Looking for a Fly Tyer article

2015-11-13 Thread Pete Gramp
Sorry, been a hectic week - anyhow, the article is on British Wet Flies.
Joyce and Ashley have graciously sent the article, and I thank them both
profusely for doing so. I'd purchase it myself, if not for the fact that
it is just not available in circulation much, if at all, anymore. I'm a
loyal subscriber to the magazine (though I wholeheartedly agree that it has
declined significantly over recent years) .

Again, thank you so very much for the article, Joyce and Ashley, and let me
know if I can send you some material as a "barter" thanks. I think I have
some porcupine quills, always a hit *a la *coffin fly, "modern dry fly
code" cover - look alike. That goes for anyone, I suppose, if you wish to
try your hand at it and need some porcupine quills, let me know, but Joyce
and Ashley have 'first dibs'.

Thanks again,
-Pete

There's an area of Maine, USA that I'll be fishing this summer where
the adjacent farmlands are supposed to be harvested just a week prior to my
fishing. Even though I can't wade this go of it (and it's bugging me
that's the case), I figure that the hoppers and/or crickets will make their
typical migration down to the water because of the farms' harvests, so I
should be tying up the same-sized terrestrials as past years.

Not that past years' patterns didn't work well (namely a modified 'letort
cricket' in pale yellow- rusty-olive with a dyed candy-apple-red hackle
tail, and then a pink-craft-store-foam 'baby boy hopper', both relatively
small, in size 12 to 14), but I always have a desire to try new patterns.
Anyone have some favorite hopper or cricket patterns that might be new to
 me?

I heard that one of the magazines (perhaps fly fisherman?) has a
feature on Hoppers this latest issue, but I've yet to read / get it, and
see if there are patterns in there.

Happy Fourth of July to everyone in USA,
 -Pete

[VFB] Looking for new #12-14 hopper/cricket patterns

2015-07-04 Thread Pete Gramp
There's an area of Maine, USA that I'll be fishing this summer where the
adjacent farmlands are supposed to be harvested just a week prior to my

Anyone have some favorite hopper or cricket patterns that might be new to
me?

I heard that one of the magazines (perhaps fly fisherman?) has a feature
on Hoppers this latest issue, but I've yet to read / get it, and see if
there are patterns in there.

Happy Fourth of July to everyone in USA,
-Pete
(ZugbugPete)

Re: [VFB] Test photo

2015-03-22 Thread Pete Gramp
I greatly appreciate this as well, thank you so much!

With funds being what they are, Sowbug just isn't happening for me this
year. (Family vacation for 2+ weeks, stopping at Roscoe NY area for a few
days, and then heading N to Maine USA for remainder of ~2wks, is taking its
toll on fly fishing travel funds this year.)

I'll start a new thread and ask about stuff to do around roscoe, guides
around roscoe, lodging, etc... please respond to *that* thread if in that
regards, No need to muddle up and hijack the Sowbug thread with that *totally
*different topic...

[VFB] Catskills / Roscoe NY, USA - Any Info, send it my way

2015-03-22 Thread Pete Gramp
So this summer, my wife finally gave in and is letting me stop for 2 or 3
days in the catskills region, around Roscoe NY USA. There are great things
that I've heard, and there are of course the stories of its fabled streams
and rivers. While I'm foaming at the bit, there are some questions and
possible hiccups that need to be solved before I go.

That's where you kind folks come in. I'll be frank - my knowledge of the
Catskills are only what the sporadic fly fishing book, a topo map, and the
fly fishing videos have shown me. A guide is almost a necessity when it
comes to this rusty ol' caster, flopping the line on the water like a
cowboy roping at a rodeo... I'll need all the help I can get! Been almost
a half year since on the water, possibly more, due to medical reasons; I
won't go into it here, but feel free to private message me if you'd like
details. Point is, I'd love to fish the fabled waters, catching anything
(a baseball counts as catching something, right?), not being picky about
having to catch numbers of fish, or size of fish, but preferably catching *at
least one* fish over the course of 2 or 3 days. Any recommendations for
which waterways to target, for a not so great (i.e. horrible) caster?
Here's the kicker - due to the medical issues, I can't be hiking huge
distances (two miles each way is about it, if I obey the doc), and can't be
wading higher than, well, I'll say waist, but if my doc had a say it would
be up to my knee - I made the mistake of asking him... Anyhow, heard the
Williweemoc (sp?) fits the bill, but I don't know enough about the area to
say one way or the other.

Other considerations, I'll have my wife, and kids (one in elementary
school, other a toddler) with me on this trip. They won't be fly fishing
with me, but will need lodging and something to do for 2-3 days.
Suggestions for lodging, eateries, and things to do while I'm enjoying the
fishing would be awesome, and would help me keep this as a good idea in
my wife's head :) We have no problem with the idea to rough it, but due
to the medical issues, need potable water, and need electricity to run
medical stuff. Anyone who knows how to get a portable battery pack type
thing, that outputs electricity in a way that you can just plug in a normal
(USA type) electric plug, that would be such an awesome thing, you have no
idea.
Wow, this is turning into a novella - I'll end this here and see if anyone
knows of info surrounding the catskills region centering on Roscoe NY.
Thanks!

Hardy wraps,
-Pete

I do have my flies tied up, and offer one to anyone from the swap who asks
(via a business envelope and stamp) but I respectfully ask to drop from the
blizzard swap due to not being able to get to the post office while they

Apologies if I was the cause of the blizzard swap being held up - I was
trying to get to the post before the last person submitted their flies
before me, but I don't want to hold up the swap, so dropping out is the
right thing to do.

I WILL call myself a backsliding liar and open up my swap by one more

I'm still here. Have a cranial mass lesion in left occipital lobe, 6.5mm,
aka brain tumor. still doing the every 6 weeks MRI with contrast and
perfusion routine. As long as it doesn't grow, all is well; if it does
grow, I'll be in the operating room for cranial neurosurgery within a week
(or so they say). So other than that, life is good. Tie on the weekends
when not working.
I'm game for a swap if 12 or fewer flies, and if no PB is needed. I have
some Ice Dub and could tie up some Josh's White Lightnings nymphs in
either purple or orange (prefer purple - caught a 13-14 brookie and an 18
rainbow on it this pattern this late september / early october). Let me
know when due, how many flies, and where to send. I don't do well with
hosting, but if someone else (you?) are hosting, I'll gladly participate.

Re: [VFB] Roll call and winter fly-swap interest??

2013-12-01 Thread Pete Gramp
Thanks everyone, but golly it wasn't my intent to hijack the email thread.
I really would like to see a swap (hosted by someone else) happen - and
participate as well. :) Thanks for the well wishes, though, much
appreciated :)

neurosurgery within a week (or so they say). So other than that, life
is good. Tie on the weekends when not working.
I'm game for a swap if 12 or fewer flies, and if no PB is needed. I
have some Ice Dub and could tie up some Josh's White Lightnings nymphs
in either purple or orange (prefer purple - caught a 13-14 brookie and
an 18 rainbow on it this pattern this late september / early october).
Let me know when due, how many flies, and where to send. I don't do
well with hosting, but if someone else (you?) are hosting, I'll gladly
 participate.

I am still working at BYU Hawaii in Laie, HI. But next year
probably end of May will retire. We bought a home in Utah and will
move back. I hope I can re-acclimate to the cold after all this
time. We want to be back around family. I am okay on health for
now. Hope to see some of you at least after moving back. Maybe a
VFB conclave on the Green River?

I need an excuse to tie so I would join the swap. I have no polar
bear but could sub something (snowshoe or arctic fox). I have
 plenty of ice dubbing.

VFB Roll Call... Who’s still here?
And let us know how you are doing if you feel like it.
I’ll start. Got my diabetes on the run. Off insulin now
(un-officially) and my BG readings are still all normal.
Exercise and diet have been the key for me. Up to a mile on the
treadmill now- walking, jogging, and wind-sprinting up to 6 mph
so far with incline. Two months ago a 5 min. /2 mph/ /level
walk/ pooped me out. My BP is now normal after the workout and
after the cool-down. Have lost 45 pounds so far (less of me to
 love). Who-hoo!
Anyone interested in *fly swaps* now that winter is here?
Something with ice-dubbing? or polar bear?

[VFB] Spey feathers now eider duck feathers

2013-11-08 Thread Pete Gramp
Just curious, has anyone tried eider duck feathers for speys and dees (as
hackle)? I was gifted two feathers many years ago and i don't know if
legal or if they'd serve the purpose... my friend who gave me them said
they are like a cross between coque and blue eared pheasant, only longer
fibered, and a quick glance looks like they're more bronze mallard like
than a wispy hackle, so i was curious if anyone had experience with them.
I could have sworn i used these before but i can't find any example flies
in my stash... guess i didn't use yet, perhaps because i was unsure if
legal to use in the usa.
Anyone?

I support the National Brain Tumor Society through medical donations.
They can keep em.

 Hi DonO
Hey, I don't want to get into a spat about this. As far as I'm concerned,
Dr. Tom's spey hackles don't compare favourably to those from a heron
period. I did buy some spey feathers from Byard some years ago and was very
disappointed. I'm not on Dr.Tom's pro staff so any feathers that I buy
come at full retail. I bought from Byard as mail order and didn't see the
feathers before buying. I'm on a very limited budget and I don't have the
benefit of visiting the Whiting farm as you do, nor could I afford to buy
50 capes. having said that, I like Whiting Farm feathers for their quality
especially for Trout flies, but would not buy any more of Tom's spey
hackles until I could handle them first.

[VFB] Irish Lough / bumble flies

2013-10-06 Thread Pete Gramp
I've found out some medical news that means I'll likely have a lot of days
off work, recovering and doing treatment regimens. quite severe and equally
personal. No need for the i'm sorrys or that crud. Anyhow, i figure my
self-assigned therapy includes tying massive quantities of flies, and I've
been on an Irish Lough fly or bumble fly kick lately. I've watched every
Davie McPhail youtube video on the subject i could find - quite a few - but
was wondering if any vfb folks knew of good books or webpages on that style
of fly. They are like mini spey flies, sans wing, in sizes 8 to 14/maybe
16, from the looks of things... palmered wet flies overhackled with
partridge collars? A class to themselves that makes them awesome to me.
 Any info is appreciated,
-Pete
