specialty foreign import vendors under their banner.

Amy,
If you're accustomed to searching Amazon, it could be helpful to search in the
various national versions of the site (e.g. amazon.de,
amazon.fr, amazon.co.uk). Obviously,
the UK site is the best bet for English subtitles, but some of the German and
French releases will have subtitles as well. With France, these aren't always
listed and you may need to do some additional research to determine subtitle
availability.
Another site to check is daaveedee.com, which is located
in the U.S. and specializes in international DVD releases.

Thanks for passing this along, Lorraine!! This is exciting! Although, it
doesn't quite solve the problem of having a physical copy in our collection, or
a streaming version to which we can provide access for our patrons who may not
have a Netflix account. I was just having a conversation about this (films
produced by streaming services without any means for libraries to purchase hard
copies or license) with the lovely Meredith Miller not a few hours ago, and
just a week or two ago had an exchange with the distributors of the Netflix
film Audrie and Daisy. It went as follows:

Me: "Greetings, I am a media librarian at the University of Delaware Library.
One of UD's student groups will be hosting a film screening of Audrie & Daisy
soon, and we've already had requests that we add the film to our Library's
collection so that it can be used in classes and made available for students to
watch for research. Are there any plans to make Audrie & Daisy available for
purchase on DVD soon, or via some other mechanism that allows institutional
access? I've personally watched the film via my own Netflix account, and I
know it would be a great resource for our faculty and students. Thank you!"

Carla @ Filmsprout: "Thanks so much for your note, and we're thrilled to hear
that the Library is interested in the film. I'm so sorry, but currently there
aren't plans to make the film available for institutional purchase because the
film is already available for individual and private classroom use via the
Netflix service. However, I'd be glad to let you know if anything changes!"

Me: "Institutions are not able to subscribe to Netflix, so unfortunately we
can't offer private classroom use via the Netflix service. I hope that this
may change in the near future, as we've been unable to provide equitable access
to some excellent programming due to the models put forth by Amazon Prime,
Netflix, etc. Please do let me know if anything should change with 'Audrie &
Daisy'."

Carla: "Thank you for your note, and I hear you. I've shared your feedback
with my team, and I will absolutely let you know if anything changes around
institutional licensing for the film."

Several of us (myself, Lorraine, and a few others who may or may not be on
VideoLib?) who attended National Media Market in October discussed this very
thing over lunch one afternoon -- the need to advocate and raise awareness
amongst the producers of films that fit into this growing category. Towards
that end, I'd encourage everyone to take the extra time to contact producers of
films like 13th, Audrie & Daisy, Transparent, etc. when your students /
instructors request them to help the producers understand the need for an
educational distribution model that would allow us to provide access to these
important films. Clearly, Ms. DuVernay and the Filmsprout folks intend for
these documentaries to be widely seen and utilized in educational settings --
they need to hear from us that we share that mission and need options to pay
them for / license their content.

Best,

--

Thanks everyone,

I really appreciate your input. Our policy is about 2000 years old and makes
no sense.
I want us to loan on OhioLINK; and I'm not sure what the hesitation is all
about --- I'll find out soon.

Thanks Barb for clearing up the PPR issue; why not loan a PPR as long as we are
clear that PPR is for OU only in terms of screenings.

Just chiming in to second all that Barb had to say. This is the model we
follow at UD -- that may have more than a little something to do with the fact
that I talked with Barb before we ventured into that territory :) . It has
served us well for 5 or so years now, and many of the concerns we'd had going
in have proven unfounded. We've had to replace one or two titles that were
damaged during shipment, but that's pretty much it!

borrowing.

There is no reason you can't lend DVDs that were purchased with PPR. The PPR of
course does not transfer to a borrower not associated with Ohio University, but
that doesn't affect personal or classroom use.

Videos on reserve or booked for an upcoming screening do not going out on ILL

We have a handful of videos that were purchased with a licensing restriction -
the Carl Rogers 3 Approaches to Psychotherapy films and a set of airplane pilot
training videos. They're flagged as not available for ILL.

Hello (again),

We are revisiting our circulation policies on DVD/VHS, as it has been MANY
years since they have been updated. We are part of a consortium, OhioLINK, and
we have chosen not to circulate our collection.

Other libraries in state have made other choices and many do circulate. I
think there was/still is a time when some distributors did not want their films
loaned via OhioLINK, although I am not completely sure of the reasoning.

My goal is to try and find a way to help circulation/acquisitions/cataloging
deal with this in the most efficient way. Perhaps there is a distributor that
does not want us to loan state wide, somehow we have to deal with that in the
cat record. Perhaps we make a blanket rule that all PPR does not circulate.
Not sure how distributors feel about this as well.

I know some of you are in consortiums and I am curious how you deal with
loaning video. Or even if you are not!

And thank you Jennifer. I had not heard of those other two sources, the JP

Never even thought of Tower Video. The distributor is Wellspring, and they are

Informative article from 2006 from Indiewire on the state of Art House

[Videolib] purchasing "Yellow Earth"

2016-09-20 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,
Me again.
Wow, this is a week of challenging searched for titles.
I'm looking for a copy of Yellow Earth, I see some DVD's are out there, but it
looks like VHS is all that is avail.
OCLC: 312164969

My problem, I need English subtitles and am not sure by looking at records (for
example, Amazon). No indication of subtitling in English. The VHS is from Fox
Lorber and I 'assume' there are subtitles, but no indication. They also put
out a DVD, but no copies avail.

Guangxi Film Studio is also a distributor.

There are libes that have DVD holdings and I can also ILL (if allowed of
course).

I just figured it's a fairly canonical work and therefore it would be easy to
find. Or not.

As always, leads are welcome.
Thanks

Hi Folks,

Completely informal straw poll-- Cadillac Desert continues to be incredibly
popular on our campus and I regularly receive inquiries from video librarians
and teachers who are desperately trying to purchase new replacements for their
VHS tapes (the set is not currently in distribution, though the filmmaker, a UC

For those who might have convenient access to circ statistics, I would

[Videolib] Screenplays/Motion Picture Plays/Shooting Scripts - advice

2016-05-03 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,

Perhaps more if a collection development Q. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm trying to find information on collection development/copyright for
screenplays. We have been given hard copy film scripts, mostly current motion
pictures, television and pilots (in different iterations); donated to our
library from various individuals. I've been trying to ascertain how librarians
deal with script donations, legally.

In the past, we've received donations from an alumni who works at major talent
agency in LA and we had the scripts bound and the catalogers dealt with the
records from OCLC. I'm assuming he gets the scripts from many different
projects and just sends me copies.

The question is asked - who owns these scripts? To be perfectly honest, I'm
not really sure in all cases.
I'm not finding much in the way of chatter about this - just some qualitative
info on how it is so easy to upload scripts, there are many free upload sites,
and it is so easy to get a copy of a motion picture script, etc etc.

Does anyone have any particular info on this subject, or has wrestled with it
in the past?
Thanks, as always,
lorraine

Hi all,
Your thoughts?
Kanopy just lost the license to stream Bicycle Thieves. G.
Not sure if any other vendor is taking up the slack, but I’m thinking this
Criterion/FilmStruck deal has something to do with it.

Thanks for any info on Bike Thieves.

Each distributor will maintain their current
non-theatrical/educational structures for the time being. This is
simply a shift of home-media digital platforms.

Re: [Videolib] streaming vendors for...

2016-04-18 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,
Thanks for your feedback.
I realize students can rent/purchase, etc., and that is an option. Certainly 2
or 3 months of Netflix/Prime etc., is not too expensive.

In terms of what can go on a Blackboard site for uploading, I don’t think there
is much I can do about these 3 titles; the goal is to have these films
available for a large Nursing program.

For example, Antonia’s Line is only avail via Film Movement and only w/ PPR
and/or DSL, neither help me with a Blackboard situation, as we do not host
films. I guess the faculty will have to choose another film.

Thanks everyone,
lorraine

Usually when I get requests for Sony stuff, it’s available on amazon for rental
or purchase.

Film Movement has Antonia’s Line with DSL

Frozen River is SPC, and you can rent on amazon for $2.99.

Leviathan also SPC but not available for rental on amazon. You can see it by
adding a STARZ subscription through amazon for $8.99/month (or purchase on
amazon for $13.99). Also there is a free 7-day trial option available for STARZ
on amazon…

Hi all,

Just a thumbs up or down on this ---
I’ve been asked to purchase these titles, so far the only distributor I can
find (via Worldcat) is Iranianmovies.com. Has anybody worked with them and can
give a thumbs up?
https://www.iranianmovies.com/
If not, recommendations for distributors for Iranian cinema.
Thanks, as always, for your help,

(Ohio U)

The first one is Ragbar/ Downpour by Bahman Beyzaie - 1972 the film has been
repaired and archived by the Scorsese Film Foundation couple of years ago and
has been shown at UCLA and Stanford University. I know one of them has the
repaired copy. here are the links to the IMDB and UCLA sites:

The other one which many people consider a masterpiece in the Iranian cinema is
Still Life by Sohrab Shahid Saless - 1974 and here you can find the link to its
IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072248/

Hi Lorraine,

Swank licenses Normal Heart, so they should be able to help you with streaming
rights.

Last time I checked with Sony Picture Classics, they still were not offering
educational streaming rights. I would recommend that students watch All about
My Mother via amazon, or if they can't pay, you can have it on reserve in the
library.

Hi all,

First, thank you all for the feedback on the VHS > DVD topic this week. Very
helpful, always, even the arguments.

How about this one? I'm always curious regarding things like this - I have
faculty (with online class) that want to 'stream' All About My Mother and
Normal Heart.

Normal Heart is HBO (and HBO GO).

All About Mom is Sony Pictures Classics

All About Mom they could rent from Amazon Video, that's only $3.99

Not sure of HBO GO.

When you have faculty that want films not avail from streaming (esp in online
setting), are they SOL? Or the faculty suggest to the students ways to watch on
their own? Both of these titles 'should' be readily avail at video stores,
libraries.

Thanks for any advice,

best,

Videolibbers,

Thank you for your suggestions.
I have contacted the filmmaker. Hey, it’s worth a try.

If the faculty insists on this particular film of Native Son, and there are VHS
copies available, and I have a player in the library, I don’t think I can make
a case to copy the VHS without permission.

Hi Lorraine,

Just a follow-up note. If the instructor needs this video in a DVD or
streaming format, and if none are available in the market, you can contact the
copyright holder to request written permission or negotiate a license to
convert & use the video in that format. Also request permission to add closed
captions right away, since this is originating from a VHS.

This can be a quick or lengthy process, but it can also be quite successful if
the video is not an orphan work.

Hi Lorraine,

First, I would ask if the faculty is using this for a face-to-face class & for
instructional purposes. If so, you can reference this FAQ from the U.S.
Copyright Office: http://copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html#movies

You can also reference 17 U.S.C. §110(1) for the legal text.

Screenings outside of that situation require public performance rights.

Welcome to 2016. I’m looking forward to another year of learning from all of

Let me start here.

This Q has come up a few times this year, at least for me.

I have a faculty that wants to screen Native Son, 1986 w/ Oprah Winfrey. As
far as I can see ONLY a VHS exists. My first Q is, if we do not have players
in the classroom, and I am not seeing any copy of this on DVD, are we SOL?

My only other option is to purchase the VHS and have her screen in the library

that is my only option, correct?

Btw, all the VHS copies are used; which could be fine.

[Videolib] mashup/copyright Q

2015-10-01 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello all,
I need some advice here; this is a bit new to me in terms of the legality of
use. Here is the scenario:

We are doing a big ALICE in WONDERLAND promo gig (display, film and speaker).

The student working on the PR would like to use a scene from 5 different
versions of ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
We would then like to put it on the web (our library page, but it would be
accessible to all).

In the world of 'fair use' and 'remix' can we do this legally?
I don't feel qualified to give a definitive yes or no on this.
Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Lorraine,

I would do it. Sounds like fair use to me. Also, I perceive your risk in this
situation as extremely low. You’re not charging admission for the film, right?
Not a money making venture?

BTW sounds like a cool program! This summer I saw the Czech film “Alice” at a

Hello all,
I need some advice here; this is a bit new to me in terms of the legality of

In the world of ‘fair use’ and ‘remix’ can we do this legally?
I don’t feel qualified to give a definitive yes or no on this.
Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Best,
lorraine

I am pretty sure India Song does not have distribution in the US. There is
enough info out there to track down the rights holder but I can pretty much
guarantee they will either turn you down flat or want an insane amount of

[Videolib] Streaming and smaller films

2015-08-31 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,

I have a faculty who would like to purchase streaming rights to the following
films. The first three are all Ohio based films/filmmakers/distributors - none
of these provide any type of streaming services, nor do we have a server at
Ohio U capable of uploading films.

I'm wondering as a non-filmmaker/distributor - how difficult is it to ask for
something like this? In the world of streaming services, these types of things
are always a bit wonky, and if so, suggestions are welcome.

I feel I am not well rounded enough on streaming to speak to how smaller
filmmakers deal with this issue.

Thank you all for your feedback.
Best,
lorraine wochna

* Devil's Oven - I can contact filmmaker and see if she has a streaming
copy, but probably not! These are just little companies.

* Cheshire Transaction - same deal, since it is Ohio based we might get
something from the filmmakers.

* Forest Returns - same thing, Ohio based and I could perhaps find the
filmmakers/company.

* Inhaling the Spore - and same thing, but they were distributed by
Microcinema, which no longer exists.

Judy et al,
My apologies, I didn’t realize you were looking at the NT Live performances.
Yes, it probably is just like performances in the US, where the only place to
see a taped performance is at Lincoln Center Theatre on Film.

I wonder if they would bring them to the FATHOM events that a lot of theatres
subscribe to? I see we are getting a few in Athens, OH
3/26 @ 7:00pm National Theatre Live presents A View From The Bridge Adult:

I had no idea the big blockbuster theater would do this – so thanks for
bringing up the topic in the first place.

Thanks Jane and Chris,

I am working on the same project at Ohio U in order to make my case for
streaming services, along with providing enough data to show that we need a
general fund for purchasing media either in streaming or DVDs. For us, I don’t
think all subject librarians are aware of how much use our collection gets; so
getting stats together will help me raise awareness and promote collections.
I’m also trying to put together a ‘media team’ as we have no official ‘media
librarian’ (I’m the ‘go to/cares about’ person and have not updated our
collection policy in quite a while. Lots to gather, but these kinds of
conversations are very useful to me, so thank you.

We have invested much in building our streaming titles and through a careful

Hi everyone,

I have a faculty who would like to introduce 'global health' issues (any and
all) using a FEATURE FILM. Not a documentary.
I am tapped, cannot think of any titles that cover the subject of global health.
She is willing to go outside the box - Blood Diamond is too far outside the
box, but she is looking for any issue on global health (AIDS, viruses, dirty
water causes malaria, etc.)
ANY ideas are greatly appreciated.
Really though, no docs.

Thank you,

Children in No Man's Land - NEW DAY

Sleep Dealer - Maya Entertainment (US Distrib), This is that, Likely Story

[Videolib] CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS IN ALA-VRT DISCUSSION AT ANNUAL

2014-09-30 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello everyone,

I’ve recently submitted a proposal to Video Round Table for consideration at
the ALA annual. They accepted my proposal, with a caveat – I mentioned that
this would be a brief panel discussion and Q A and that I would find a few
‘co-presenters’. VRT would like some ‘names’ to go with my proposal. I turn
to videolib to see if anyone would be interested in this topic. I have humbly
attached my proposal and would be very interested in working together. I’m
hoping to work with a vendor (or two), media librarian (or two), and anyone who
has worked with PPR and/or a PPR film series.

I’m focusing on PPR in specific – that can be as simple as understanding the
differences between PPR/Educational Use/Institutional Use - through and
including ways to secure rights, access to venues, and other issues that come
up with PPR specific questions. This has been a ‘pet’ of mine especially this
year, as we are having faculty/students want to show films at the Athena, Ohio
U arthouse, owned by university. It brings up many questions that I would like
to address in the presentation:

· Diff between PPR / Institutional and Educational (the basics)

· Where can you show a PPR on campus?

· How to establish a work flow so we don’t get into “I want to show
“XXX” Saturday at the Athena” – do they need to understand that rights have to
be secured? How can we help them? What can we do?

· How to work with Circulation Desk (where we keep our films) and
creating an environment where PPR can be best understood.

· Our cinema asks for permission from rights holder to screen in a
theatrical venue, can we work around this?

· Can we work more collaboratively with vendors?

· Once we have a head wrapped around the basic do’s and don’t of PPR,
how to we promote to students faculty and staff?

· How do vendors that offer PPR deal with these situations?

What I’m hoping for is a few takers on working with me, and then fleshing out
the raw material and addressing at the conference. All the bullets above are
just ideas, concerns, thoughts.

I will be at Mid-Winter, so that would be one place to start. We could also
meet over Adobe Connect or some other ‘webinar’ tool.

I look forward to your responses and apologize for not being 100% clear in what
I want to focus on – besides PPR issues. As you know, all we have to do is
say/speak or write the word PPR and a plethora of responses will floor the
email. I’m aware that this is a slippery slope. Just trying to make it not so
slippery to get the films out there to the world.

Best,
lorraine

[Videolib] a few films i need a little info on

2014-08-11 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,

I'm working with faculty on purchasing streaming/DSL a few films and I need
some advice if you have it - thanks.

Central Park Five, avail from PBS/WETA - if we wanted a DSL, could we ask for
one? I actually do not know if DSL is something everyone accommodates. I
don't think anyone is streaming PBS/POV, but if so, I'd love to know.

Tongues United - from California Newsreel with Streaming (am I correct?). We
purchased the DVD from Docurama originally, but --- looks like if I have the
DVD it is less $$ for the Streaming.

Black Like Me - not through Criterion or Swank. Probably not possible, but
thought I'd ask.

Thanks all - your insight is always a beautiful thing.

[Videolib] Feature Films and libraries

2014-07-15 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi everyone,

I’m writing up a PPR/Feature Film blurb for our website. When faculty / grads
/ students want to show a feature film, do you direct them to Swank or
Criterion, or does your library (librarian, media library) investigate? How
many of you consider this a library service? For the most part, this will not
come out of our budget, but folks ask how to get rights and I wanted to give
them a decent answer. Right now my advice to them is to contact Swank Digital
(on their own). I’m completely happy to help all of them, but it might be
best if they know how to begin on their own.

Thanks for your input,
Best,

Dear Lorraine,

If it's a one-time use, often a negotiation with the distributor will provide a
lower rental fee -- especially if you talk with them on a continued basis. Or
even being conversational with them just once.

Edith Kramer of the Pacific Film Archive had a technique of just talking for as

I still am curious on the best way to go about finding out who has rights to

[Videolib] advice on streaming feature film situation - FOLLOW UP Q

2013-08-01 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello again everyone,

Thank you so much for your advice on streaming films for an online cinema
studies class. The Asst Deans here at Ohio U agree that we should provide the
streaming access to the list of titles that the faculty has chosen. Some of
the titles are available via MEF, some titles I can get through Swank Digital,
but there are 4 titles that are not available for streaming (using
canistreamit.it or gowatchit.com).

Just curious if we have to deal with these 4 titles on a title by title basis?
Or is there an 'organization' or third party that can negotiate these remaining
titles? While I'm at it, let me send you the 4 titles I am having difficulty
with, perhaps some of you know who we contact to discover if streaming is an
option:

[Videolib] advice on streaming feature film situation

2013-07-18 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
hello all,

i've been bombing around some databases, internet, listservs looking for some
advice, but i'm not coming up with a hard and fast answer; so any advice would
be appreciated.

This has to do with more and more faculty teaching an online course in cinema
studies. My faculty wants to show a list of films (which I'm waiting for, but
she indicates they are feature films). We own VAST and MEF/Race Collection,
and a few other collections, but none of these films are what she is looking
for.

I believe she cannot upload our copies of the film to Blackboard as this goes
against copyright. We currently do not have our own streaming server (that I
know of).

My thinking is that it will be cost prohibitive to purchase the rights to show
these films.
From here, I would treat it like any online course --- if it was a literature
class and they had to read 10 novels, it is their responsibility to obtain the
10 novels - however they wish to do it; but it is not my job to upload all ten
novels.

Can't the same logic hold true here? The students need to know that they will
need access to 10 particular films, and if they cannot access those films, it
might not be a good idea to take an online cinema class.

Now all this is based on what we can offer at the moment, of course.

I'm curious what kind of advice you would offer your faculty, teaching an
ONLINE CINEMA STUDIES class, and wanting about 10 feature films to be available
to the students.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

Remember that if a book or other print resource is unavailable for purchase at
a reasonable price (new or used), Section 108 allows a holding library to make
a copy of that entire work for a requesting customer or library (which becomes
the property of the user), as long as the purpose is scholarship, research, or
private study. See the Section 108 Spinner for more information
http://librarycopyright.net/resources/spinner/

If there are libraries with copies of this script (in a “version” that would be
acceptable), you could ask them to make you a copy/scan under Section 108.

It'a time to withdraw these. Can you adapt your VHS replacement criteria to
prioritize which ones you would buy on CD or withdraw?
Do you have a classical CD collection already and/or streaming classical music
such as NAXOS or ASP? If so, these CDs are superfluos.

Demand for CDs at my institution has really slowed because of MP3 revolution
and streaming audio.

Spoken word is also available on CD.

I always get input from faculty before I wholesale withdraw a collection, just
so they know, and I inquire what is most needed for teaching and research. I
did this with 16mm last year and retained some things they requested.

[Videolib] Special School of Film Project - gathering clips

2012-09-27 Thread Wochna, Lorraine

Lorraine
Ohio U

Hi Loraine,

I am the TA assistant this semester and I am helping faculty with a special
project for the School of Film. I am emailing you in the hopes that you can
help me. My assignment is to collect somewhere around 100 clips from different
movies to illustrate different concepts of filmmaking such as opening
sequences, dialogue sequences, chase sequences etc. Faculty has given me
an enormous list of films which he needs me to obtain DVD copies of. I will
then chose the specific sequences from each DVD and burn them onto separate
DVDs which will be used solely for the purposes of the School of Film to teach
future filmmakers. The end result will be 10 separate DVDs which each have
roughly 10 sample clips for each type of sequence.

I realize that to accomplish this project I will need some help. First, I need
to be able to check out a whole bunch of DVDs at one time. Secondly, I am sure
that some of the films I am looking for will not be available at the library or
will not be on DVD and I am hoping that you will be able to order them for me
somehow. I am wondering if perhaps I should meet with you to go over all of
this in person? Also, faculty is willing to meet with us if it is necessary to
obtain permission to burn the copies of the clips.

Please let me know what I need to do to accomplish this project in terms of
getting permission to check out all the DVDs and anything else I may not have
thought of.

Thank you so much for your time,

[Videolib] Birth of a Nation - the definitive version

2012-09-14 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello all,

I have a prof that wants a copy of Birth of a Nation - we have 5 versions in
our collection. He seems to think none of them are the 'right' one. I'm
thinking Kino is the way to go - but your input would be appreciated:

The Birth of a nation [videorecording] / D.W. Griffith
New York, N.Y. : Kino Video, c1993

The birth of a nation [videorecording] / David W. Griffith Corporation
Chatsworth, Calif. : Image Entertainment, 1998

The birth of a nation [videorecording] / D.W. Griffith presents ; produced
under the direction of D.W. Griffith ; story arranged by D.W. Griffith and
Frank E. Woods
Kino on Video, c1992

The birth of a nation [videorecording] / produced under the direction of D.W.
Griffith
Los Angeles, Calif. : Delta Entertainment Corp., c2004

The Birth of a Nation, by Henry B. Walthall, Mae Marsh Lillian Gish
(performer), by Gish, Lillian, Griffith, D.W., Marsh, Mae Walthall, Henry B.,
directed by Griffith, D.W. (Kino International, 2002), 211:08 mins (accessed
using Academic Video Online)
But I may have to buy a new DVD from Kino?

Just checking which one is the 'preferred' production and/or is there another
production that I don't even know about!
Thanks,
lorraine

[Videolib] thoughts on distribution

2012-08-29 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello CW,

I have a faculty member who made a film and is trying to get distribution.
It's been in festivals, and he has it for sale on Amazon, but he was hoping to
get a bit more play out of it with universities, libraries, museums because it
hits so many disciplines.

My thoughts were getting distributors that focus on schools that purchase
educational films, such as Kino, Docurama, maybe Microcinema. Also, contacting
each one of the more independent distributors.

Here is the link, so you can see what I'm talking about
http://humanities.case.edu/media/eventGuides/191_Frederick_Lewis_Guide.pdf
Reading this may lead you to think he 'should' know what he's doing, but I
think this particular film is his baby, and he wants it to get more play.

I realize we are not distributors, but I wondered if you had any sage or even
unsage advice you could offer. It would be greatly appreciated. Please let me
know if I overstepped my bounds here.

Thanks a lot

[Videolib] documentary evaluation

2012-04-15 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi CW,

Wondering if anyone has a handy dandy handout type thing on evaluating a
documentary. I would be using this with 1st year students as they are allowed
to use a documentary as a source. So I'm looking for a decent, simple,
straightforward 'form' with criteria for evaluating a doc.

As usual, I'm time crunched, class is Monday eve - thought I'd check if anyone
has a quick and dirty form. If not, no problem.

Thanks so much,

[Videolib] DVD vendor Q - COOL WORLD

HI all,

I am looking for Shirley Clarke's Cool World for purchase.
I can get it here: http://shop.vendio.com/HARDTOFINDFILMS/
But not sure if it is legit (I feel certain it is not).

I see Zipporah has it on VHS for $400 (that's all) and it is not available in
DVD.

From Worldcat most of the copies are from Zipporah, and one from 'Nostalgia
Collector which I don't think is in business anymore. If I have to I will
ILL this, because $400 for VHS seems high, but I don't know the film that well
and I could be mistaken.

Any light on this would be appreciated.

Frederick Wiseman's ZIPPORAH FILMS. It was his first film and he produced while
Shirley Clarke directed. You can email the very capable Karen Konicek there and
see if she can do something for you. THE COOL WORLD materials are at the

[Videolib] recommendation for films

2011-08-24 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hello CW,

I have a faculty member teaching Women and Writing this Fall and she would like
to show a film with these parameters:

..maybe a film they have seen before or a more subtle indictment of the sexism
faced by both females and males. One of my favorite quotes from an essay is
that while women are seen as sex objects, men are seen as success objects. I
guess I am trying to find a film that shows this dynamic.

I suggested von Trier, Lynch and Labute (since they always get criticized on
these issues). I also suggested Film Noir in general, and of course, Disney
films. Other suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

http://matineeclassics.com/movies/1948/boarding_house_blues/

that is what I am curious about.
Thanks again,

Tom, we also elected to remove discs from their cases so that we could have

original DVD cases have a label inside with the disc number, which is also
written on the center ring label on the disc itself and added to the record

We’ve been using the Imation Stakka disc storage devices for storing our
circulating DVDs, and they are a constant headache. It seems they’re not really
capable of handling the volume of use they get here. On reading customer
reviews of other comparable devices, it looks like they all have the same
issues when put to that kind of use. Our space is very limited, so we need to
find an alternative besides having every DVD on the shelf in its case. I’m
interested in any solutions list members have found—high or low tech.

[Videolib] need some help on this film

2011-03-02 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,
I have a patron looking for background info on (producer, director etc.) War
on Drugs the Prison Industrial Complex. They found it on documentarynow.org.
I went further and see that it is directed by Frank Wiering and the company
is VPRO.NL

I found http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/36010 and this page on the company (in
German) http://www.vpro.nl/programma/dnw/

On IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316879/

I also found this http://freedocumentaries.org/int.php?filmID=335
(Interested in how much legitimacy this site has)

I think that is about all I can find on this film, assuming all my patron wants
is producer and director. If you have any other ideas or suggestions for
finding info on esoteric type films like this, I'd be much obliged.

Again, thanks to everyone,
Lorraine

[Videolib] language from vendors

2011-01-24 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
Hi all,
Out of curiosity, not wanting to open pandoras box (it may be inevitable)

When a vendor (ie, First Run) uses non-theatrical public performance
OR
When a vendor (ie, Film Media Group) uses public performance allowed

how are you defining non-theatrical PPR v. PPR.

thanks,

Re: [Videolib] Media in Book Drops

2010-09-17 Thread Wochna, Lorraine
We recently integrated our Media Services and Collection with the Circulation
Desk area. (Budget cuts, staff cuts, etc.). We have always had a separate
drop box for the media, even before we moved, so most students are used to the
drop box. Circulation is very good about emptying the drop box during the day
(and through the night, as we are open until midnight). Saturday, Sunday, off
days, etc. - we back date the material.

Sometimes a DVD will come loose from its case, we capture it and put it back -
I don't think it has been a huge problem.
