Re: iPhone 5 and power up vibration

2012-09-23 Thread Ricardo Walker
I don't doubt that would be nice but, How many times have people started their
phones without voiceover coming up talking? I honestly can't recall it ever
happening for me. IDK. I personally find it overkill but, I know many others
would and will find vibration in the case reassuring.

This is not an iOS6 feature, this is iPhone5.

Re: iPhone Passcode query

2012-09-23 Thread James Mannion
I would say either use headphones when entering the code or just make
it a habit to press the volume down a few times and hold it close to
your ear to enter the code. You might also want to consider how it
fits your situation that even if someone did hear the code, they would
have to be also the one to take your phone if they were going to do
such a thing or at least to be able to pick it up somehow. Without
that combination of events, the code means nothing to them. Then there
is that probably the majority won't understand what it is saying or
even care. So thinking specifically what this code is protecting may
help.

 Hello list,

So after a long time not getting around to it, I finally set a passcode on
 my iPhone (4S).

Anyway, that wasn’t the problem, but now of course, when I unlock my phone
and am prompted to enter in my four digit code, VO announces what I’m
typing. This kind of defeats the purpose. At home it’s not an issue, but
when I’m out and about or around people whoever they may be, what’s the
point since my code is announced to anyone keen enough to hear?

I know that Apple just couldn’t have had VoiceOver say star, star, star,
star or asterisc, asterisc, asterisc, asterisc for every number we press
since we would then have no idea if we’re pressing the right key
combination or not. My question is if there’s in fact some other means to
protect our four digit code from being announced in a way where it’s not
broadcasted to the four winds whenever we wish to unlock our device? I
poke around the settings and didn’t find anything if there was anything at
all. I guess enabling a dial pad feature to recreate the tones when making
a call could be a solution, but those tones are so subtle, it really takes
a trained ear to differentiate them from one another.

Anyway, just thought I’d ask if anyone knows of a better solution.

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and when I
did it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit and then
British English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back to US and hope
it will stay that way. Though it still seems to indicate that my default is
British English even though I have said just English like you said. I guess
it doesn't take much effort to change it if it changes itsself back since
it's in my rotor, just it never did that before so it's slightly irritating.

 Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date format
you prefer. In International you can change the following settings
 independently from each other:

Language: this is the default language used by Voiceover Voice
Control: this is the language you set for SIRI or stand-along voice
 dialing
Keyboards: here you can select multiple keyboards and order them in
the same way you can order the voices in the language rotor. I just
use the main English keyboard and the Emoji keyboard to have easy
access to emoticons. By the way, just noticed you can delete items
here by flicking down, i.e. the new actions rotor works here.
Region Format: Here you can select your country and this determines
how your date and time is formatted/displayed. If you change this and
then flick past the Calendar setting you find a region Format
Example which displays how the date, time and phone numbers are
 formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I
use the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and the
region format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much the same
 as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see
why you can't select English as the language instead of British
English, then set SIRI to English UK to make she understands your limy
accent *smile* and the region format to United Kingdom.

 Hope that helps,
 Sieghard

Re: Quick thoughts on IOS6

2012-09-23 Thread Scott Howell
Marco,

WHen you refer to the size of the file are you referring to the software for
the phone? Why should APple have split the file into smaller portions? I really
think when you consider the software, 680Mb or so is not really that large. In
fax I suspect it would be difficult to split the file and not something I
myself would want. I'd rather get the file as one package instead of having to
possibly perform two steps to complete the upgrade.

I installed 6.0 yesterday and have had 24 hours to play with it. Something I
really like in this OS is that apple took the Bluetooth toggle switch and
put it near the top with the wireless switch which will make it easier to
flick it on and off. It never really belonged under the general tab.
Another feature I like is the new way of deleting emails which will make it
easier to read and reply to messages in a more timely way. The maps feature
is good and I like the ability to being able to feel where things are
located around me. It won't replace my sendero but it is a useful way to let
one know where they are on the map. I found that when walking, it announced
the upcoming streets. A fourth feature ithat I like is the ability of
voiceover to detect foreign languages and to read in that language.
The only drawback to ios 6 upgrade was the massive size of the file. Apple
could have split this task into a few smaller files.

Re: inserting a period at the end of a sentence

2012-09-23 Thread Scott Howell
Larry it works just fine in iOS 6. Most people find performing this action
challenging because it is based on timing. WIth practice you will become
successful. The taps have to be pretty close together and I would say within
one second of each other. Again, with practice you will get it. Although I have
had very good success, I on occasion find that I have not performed the action
properly and ended up with a space instead.

Bible Gateway

2012-09-23 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I use Bible Gateway but I also sometimes use sword drill. It accesses the Bible
Gateway website but to use versions other than what it accesses I think you
have to put the url in and I think you can do this somewhere in settings;
haven't gotten around to doing it. What I like about sword drill is that if I
type a passage indication into the search field, either within a chapter or
spanning chapters, just the passage I want is brought up without anything extra
at the beginning or end. In the Bible Gateway app, if I type in the search
field, I get the verses I want but more than just the passage I wanted is
displayed. I wouldn't replace bible gateway with this completely necessarily
but I find it to be a handy tool.

Using the Australian voice as default

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Allison,

You know, this is something I also noticed when I was typing up my
instructions and have been meaning to ask. For me also Australian English is
not an option in Settings, General, International and Voice. I have
been meaning to post this and hopefully maybe some of our friends down under
like David, Jonathan or Garth could chime in with an explanation.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard.
I followed your instructions, but after I pressed the first language
button, I was unable to select Australian English. The only English options
I was given were English and British English. I'm really interested in using
the full Australian voice as my default.

When I tried it by setting it to British English it did afterwards

Languages and flicked through my selection it told me British English was
my default.

Hi Sieghard, Thanks for that info. I have changed those settings and
when I did it the phone went quiet and wouldn't do anything for a bit
and then British English came back on. I changed it in the rotor back
to US and hope it will stay that way. Though it still seems to
indicate that my default is British English even though I have said
just English like you said. I guess it doesn't take much effort to
change it if it changes itsself back since it's in my rotor, just it never
did that before so it's slightly irritating.

 Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date
format you prefer. In International you can change the following
 settings independently from each other:

Example which displays how the date, time and phone numbers are
 formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I
use the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and
the region format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much
 the same
 as US.
However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see
why you can't select English as the language instead of British
English, then set SIRI to English UK to make she understands your
limy accent *smile* and the region format to United Kingdom.

 Hope that helps,
 Sieghard

 To search the

iPhone very quiet after update to iOS 6

2012-09-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

since updating to iOS 6, I have a strange volume problem. Prior to the
update, I set up the phone in a way that the signal sounds very
significantly louder than voiceover so that I wouldn't miss an incomming
message or something. Now, everything seems to be very quiet. When turned to
100 percent ,voiceover speaks like 50 percent before. And the signal sounds
are so quiet that I don't think an alarm clock would wake me up at all. All
in all, it seems that the volume has dropped in general. I turned on and off
the sounds in general without success. Shutting down and re-booting the
phone didn't help either. I also made sure that the option that allows you
to change the volume with the appropriate keys was turned on. I also pressed
the volume key as long as the sound wouldn't get louder. Did anyone else
face this problem? And what can I do to get back ma usable degree of volume?
Thanks!

Best,

Alexandra

You can't subscribe to podcasts with just the URL with the Podcasts app from
apple, which is a huge deal breaker for me, at least I don't think you can.
If you can, I'll gladly give it another shot, but for now, I'll stick with
the superior downcast.

There has been some discussion of late as to which is better, Downcast or
the default iOS Podcast client from Apple.

This is preloaded by way of comment with the fact that I've not used
Downcast myself, but, those I trust to offer opinion have not yet offered me
something, other than UI comment, that makes me think one is better than the
other. So, this message serves to inform those who on the other side of the

Features:

Fully automate and configure download parameters for individual podcasts,

choose what is kept, e.g. all, unplayed, last x etc.

playback speed, half, normal, 1.5x, 2x and 3x

adjust display mode, newest at top or oldest at top

choose playback order, newest first or oldest first, separate command from
above

full Apple iTunes selection of podcasts an information.

download over 3G or WiFi only.

Oh, fully Voice Over usable and by the way, podcasts can be played /
controlled with Siri, which is not a feature of Downcast.

I think that covers it all, I'm still awaiting something that Downcast can
do over this feature set, please do not mention the 5x speed option, surely
no-one listens at that speed?

Am I seriously missing something, or not?

Many thanks.

RE: Downcast vs iOS Podcast Client

2012-09-23 Thread Michael Malver
Hello,
I have not used the apple podcatcher. The thing I like about downcast is
that I can import mp3s into it, and it treats the imported files as a
podcast. This functionality is useful to me because Minnesota's agency for
the blind has a radio reading service whose daisy books are recorded using
mp3 files for the audio component. I can bring the mp3 files into downcast,
which saves me having to buy a separate app for reading daisy books.

Spotlight search after using siri

2012-09-23 Thread Alvin

Wonder if anyone can reproduce this problem.

After using siri, I launched the spotlight search. I was not able to enter any
test into the search field. The field is in editing mode. Pass thru gesture
also won't work. At the end, I quit spotlight search and launched an app.
Launched spotlight search again. This time I was able to enter the text.

Thank you.

Yes. It is a bug.
I have several dictionary apps and they all now have the same name.
I renamed one and now they all have that name.
I reported it to accessibil...@apple.com
And I would suggest that you do the same.

Hi,

The talking tuner will tell you the note and how many cents you are sharp or
flat and tell you when you are dead on. I, like you would much prefer a
generated tone so you could 0-beat the 2 frequencies which would be much
faster but the cents flat or sharp approach probably is more useful for the
average user for whom it works well. I haven't found a tone generator yet
for the IPhone.

By the way, I tried getting the ClearTune but it doesn't work for a blind
person. Can't tell you what it uses because it doesn't talk. I suppose it
works with a sine wave or something like that. I still believe that, for
the piano, you are better off using your intervals to set your tempered
scale. I make life a little easier by using a 4 note stand alone tone
generator which I purchased several years ago. It makes it faster than a
single tuning fork. Before that, I used two tuning forks, an A and a C and
that gave me a very good starting point.

If you ever find a tone generator for the IPhone, please let us know.

That is, you can get it unlocked for free but only for international use.

Re: Verizon iPhone 5

Hi,

Apparently this is the case. Verizon is shipping it already unlocked and you
can use it on ATT's and T-Mobile networks. Here's the caveat though. When you
use it on the US carriers GSM networks you will only get HTSPA speeds. No LTE.
So buyer be ware.

Not crazy about iOS 6 new touch type mode.

2012-09-23 Thread Jean-Philippe Rykiel
Hi all,
I sent the following request to Apple, trying to be as clear as I could.
If you agree with my disagreement, I would like you to do the same with
your own words.
Thanks.

Dear Apple team,
This new iOS version is great, but I would like to point out some
unpleasant issues with its revised touch typing mode.

1, It was a good move to give touch typing behaviour to keys such as
capital or other but not for the delete key. let me try and explain why.
In the previous iOS version, you could delete characters successively by
holding the delete key and split tapping as many times as you wanted. You
had full control of your delete speed because no matter where the second
finger was typing, the delete function was performed as long as the delete
key was held.
Now, with iOS six, you must be very careful and accurate if you want to
delete successive characters, as you have to constantly hit and release
the delete key. The new delete double tap and hold function is too quick to
let you hear the feedback of what you are deleting, so it is unusable most
of the time.
My wish is that the delete key was restored as it was in previous iOS
versions.

The second disadvantage is for non-English- users who use accented letters
frequently. It is true that keyboard latency has been improved because of
this, but it is now impossible to briefly hit a key and then double tap and
hold it to get its alternative characters. You now have to do three
gestures, find the right letter, split tap, and then double tap and hold to
look for accents. May I suggest if possible, that you give us the accents
list as soon as split tapping is performed, allowing us to scroll
through it by sliding the second finger, that would be much easyer.
Thank you for your understanding,
sincerely,
Jean-Philippe

 lose all your settings.

RE: Spotlight search after using siri

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Alvin,

On my 4S with iOS 6 this is also the case. If I type something it does not
get written into the search box, however, if I tap Dictate whatever I say is
properly inserted. I guess it's something to report for sure since maybe
this could crop up in other apps, but if this is the only place where it
happens I'd call it a minor possible slightly annoying bug.

After using siri, I launched the spotlight search. I was not able to enter
any test into the search field. The field is in editing mode. Pass thru

app. Launched spotlight search again. This time I was able to enter the

Subject: iPhone very quiet after update to iOS 6

Hello,

since updating to iOS 6, I have a strange volume problem.

Thanks!

Best,

Alexandra

 Hello,
For what ever reason, I do not have any problem with the do not disturb.
Here are my settings in my iPhone 4s, that is, the settings that
concern setting this function. Furthermore, I have announce items in
the locked screen set to on.
 1. under settings then under Notifications, then under Do Not Disturb
and under scheduled. The start time is 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM for the
 quiet
time.
 2. Scheduling is set to on.
 3. Then under settings, Do Not Disturb is set to on.
When I called my phone from a number not listed in my favorites,
nothing at all happened. Then when I called a second time with in 3
minutes, I got a notice of the call. This is the way it should work.
So, I'm not sure where the problem is.
Remember that Scheduling must be on and the correct quiet time set.
Then, remember to switch on the function from the first level of the
 settings menu.
This is really an interesting item and I'd love to see how others are
doing with, given the problem that some are having.

RE: Apple Podcast gone.

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Kawal,

I agree the the Apple Podcast app still needs some work, but it is slowly
getting better and you can download Podcasts very easily with this app. I
just searched for the Today in iOS podcast and subscribed to it. After that
all episodes are listed, in fact, they are listed already when you find the
Podcast even without subscribing. Anyhow, if you flick right there is a
download button after each episode, double tap it and it will download and
correctly announce both the amount of data that has downloaded as well as
the total size of the download and the download button itself indicates the
download percentage. After the episode has downloaded there is a More Info
button which has the show notes and you can mark the episode as played in
there, you can change the settings for the entire Podcast if you double tap
on the Podcast name or the More Info button next to the name. You can turn
subscription off for the Podcast here, a feature which I think actually does
not exist in Downcast, you can set your auto download options, e.g. keep all
unplayed, keep the 2 most recent etc. You can also indicate the sort order,
newest first or oldest first and the play order, oldest to newest or newest
to oldest. Also you can mark all as played or all as unplayed.

I was hoping that you can delete Podcasts with the new single finger flick
down gesture and then double tap to confirm, i.e. that the Action rotor
option works, but they have not yet added this although I would dare to say
that I can't see this being far away. For the time being you can delete in
the old way, do a double tap and hold (pass through gesture), then swipe
left to right across the Podcast you want to delete and a Confirm Deletion
button pops up. This is like you would delete music before the new Action
rotor setting was added.

In short, it's not so bad any more and I could see that this app after
another 2 or 3 updates will definitely be interesting especially if SIRI
integration is improved which still seems to be a bit sporatic.

Sieghard

RE: Verizon iPhone 5

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Keith,

That is surprising since I just listened to the latest Today in iOS Podcast
and Rob confirmed that while there was only one iPhone 4S which worked both
on CDMA and GSM carriers, there are now once again 3 iPhone 5 models, a CDMA
version for Verizon and Sprint and a carrier in Japan and 2 different GSM
models, one for ATT, Rogers, Telus and Bell in North America and another
one for European, Australian and New Zealand and some Asian carriers.
Apparently the difference here is in the LTE and he said there will most
likely be another one or 2 iPhone 5 models for China.

I don't really understand the whole locking to a carrier thing anyways.
After all, if I for example buy a subsidized iPhone from Telus here in
Canada where I have to sign up for a 3-year contract to get the full
subsidy, why don't they just give me an unlocked phone and sign me up for a
3-year contract. Then if after a year I decide to go to ?Rogers they would
just say that I haven't fulfilled my contract and impose a stiff penalty
which means I most likely wouldn't do it and even if I did Telus would be
paid what I owe them for the phone. After all, I can break the contract now
and pay whatever penalty they impose and once I have done this and am off
the contract I can ask them for an official unlock.

Hi,

Apparently this is the case. Verizon is shipping it already unlocked and you
can use it on ATT's and T-Mobile networks. Here's the caveat though. When
you use it on the US carriers GSM networks you will only get HTSPA speeds.
No LTE. So buyer be ware.

What happened to the speaker volume control

2012-09-23 Thread Jean-Philippe Rykiel
Hi all,
A second request sent to Apple accessibility, join me if you want.

I noticed something strange after installing iOS six on my iPhone.
during a phonecall, it is now impossible to decrease the speaker volume
below a certain point with the side buttons. The problem with that, is that
the balance between voice-over and the sound coming from the line is such
that you cannot use voice-over anymore to guide you through the keyboard,
if you need to use touchtone during your call for example.
I really hope something can be done about this.
best,
JPR

Re: Verizon iPhone 5

2012-09-23 Thread Keith Watson
Hi,

The GSM frequencies used in the US version of the CDMA phones, i.e. Verizon and
Sprint, are for those outside the US. It's not a true Tri-band World phone. So
when you insert a micro sim for either ATT or T-Mobile you are only going to
run on their GSM networks and not the LTE network. The LTE radio in the Verizon
phone is for their network, not other networks. If you want more detailed
information about which chips are being used on which networks I suggest you
research them at the Qualcom site or other sites on the web that may have
already done the research. I am just suggesting that from what I have read and
heard on podcasts like Rob Walshes TII and others that this is the case, so
before you go and purchase a verizon phone to use on another network and expect
LTE speeds you better do your homework.

version for Verizon and Sprint and a carrier in Japan and 2 different GSM
models, one for ATT, Rogers, Telus and Bell in North America and another
one for European, Australian and New Zealand and some Asian carriers.

When you do that I always see in the notification center that location

2012-09-23 Thread Sandra Heaton

Hi John,

What I have done is tried another ringtone that I bought around the same
time and assigned that to home, so I called my mobile from the home phone
and that worked, then I tried the ringtone which I wanted for my friend and
did the same thing, assigned it to home and it worked. I tried a different
ringtone for the person I wanted it to be assigned to and that person called
on the mobile but it went back to the default setting. Its something to do
with ringing from mobile to mobile because it doesn't seem to work with
different ringtones and we both have the same iphone it has just all come to
light since the update the other day. Maybe its a bad file I don't know.

Do you have any more suggestions?

Make sure the ringtone plays or try another one for that friend until you

RE: Not crazy about iOS 6 new touch type mode.

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Jean-Philippe,

I agree that typing accented characters seems a bit awkward, but I certainly
don't agree with you on the delete key issue. You can delete quickly by
repeatedly tapping and lifting your finger off the delete key, if you do it
fast enough you just hear the letters you are deleting just like I would if
I press the backspace or delete key quickly on my computer. Takes a bit of
practice since you do have to lift up and put down again exactly on the
delete key. What would be nice is if Apple could keep things the way they
are with the delete key and in addition to that re-enable split tapping just
for the delete key since for Shift and More Numbers the touch typing method
is vastly better than having to double tap or split tap.

Not quite sure yet what to think about the accented character thing, I have
to play around with it some more.

Hi all,
I sent the following request to Apple, trying to be as clear as I could.
If you agree with my disagreement, I would like you to do the same with your
own words.
Thanks.

Dear Apple team,
This new iOS version is great, but I would like to point out some unpleasant
issues with its revised touch typing mode.

Now, with iOS six, you must be very careful and accurate if you want to
delete successive characters, as you have to constantly hit and release the
delete key. The new delete double tap and hold function is too quick to let
you hear the feedback of what you are deleting, so it is unusable most of
the time.

May I suggest if possible, that you give us the accents
list as soon as split tapping is performed, allowing us to scroll through
it by sliding the second finger, that would be much easyer.
Thank you for your understanding,
sincerely,

2012-09-23 Thread Scott Howell
I cannot comment on the issue pertaining to alternative characters; however, I
see nothing wrong with how the delete key behaves now. I can hear each
character being deleted . So, either I do not understand or you are
experiencing something different. I surely disliked the split tap method for
deleting characters, but worked with it. Now I think delete is so much more
natural for me.

  Hello list,

So after a long time not getting around to it, I finally set a passcode on my
iPhone (4S).

Anyway, that wasn't the problem, but now of course, when I unlock my phone
and am prompted to enter in my four digit code, VO announces what I'm typing.
This kind of defeats the purpose. At home it's not an issue, but when I'm out
and about or around people whoever they may be, what's the point since my code
is announced to anyone keen enough to hear?

I know that Apple just couldn't have had VoiceOver say star, star, star, star
or asterisc, asterisc, asterisc, asterisc for every number we press since we
would then have no idea if we're pressing the right key combination or not. My
question is if there's in fact some other means to protect our four digit code
from being announced in a way where it's not broadcasted to the four winds
whenever we wish to unlock our device? I poke around the settings and didn't
find anything if there was anything at all. I guess enabling a dial pad feature
to recreate the tones when making a call could be a solution, but those tones
are so subtle, it really takes a trained ear to differentiate them from one
another.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a better solution.

iOS 6 and Bluetooth part of Settings

2012-09-23 Thread Chris

Hello all.
Is anyone noticing focus issues when going in the Bluetooth part of
settings. For example, if you double tap bluetooth off to turn it on,
does VoiceOver repeat the previous state, rather than or as well as the
new state? Does your VoiceOver also lose focus using the swiping gestures?

It's no big issue, but just wondering that is all.
Thanks so much!
Take care.

RE: Downcast vs iOS Podcast Client

2012-09-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Neil,

Is there a way to delete all episodes? I have not found that, but I agree
with ?Alvin, in Downcast if you mark episodes as played they are not visible
unless you tap on Show More Episodes or whatever it's called exactly. I
may not want to delete an episode because what happens if I want to go back
to an earlier episode to find something again. I am able to delete single
episodes in Today in iOS Podcast by doing the pass through gesture and then
swiping across them left to right similar to how you would delete songs
prior to the Action rotor, the Action rotor is not yet implemented in
Podcasts. In any case, if I have to delete one episode at a time how long am
I supposed to delete stuff, there are now 241 episodes of Today in iOS and
what if you are a new subscriber to another Podcast with hundreds of
episodes? I guess it's not that big a deal to have them all listed there,
but then again if other apps can hide them that means it can be done. Apple
claims they want to have the best Podcast app there is and it's not like
they didn't have plenty to compare it to. It's sort of like with the new
Maps, they make a big deal about a new product and then it falls way short
of what people expect and is launched with lots of problems or incomplete
features. And with Maps I can see how it would be a huge job, not exactly
the case with a Podcast app.

Sieghard

Hi Kirsten,

You can change the voice under Internationals and keep the date format

independently from each other:

Example which displays how the date, time and phone numbers are

formatted.

I am in Canada, so I have the voice set to just English which means I
use the Samantha HQ voice, I have SIRI set to English Canada and the
region format also to Canada although I think that is pretty much the
same

as US.

However, if you are in England and want to use Samantha I don't see
why you can't select English as the language instead of British
English, then set SIRI to English UK to make she understands your limy
accent *smile* and the region format to United Kingdom.

Hope that helps,

No. Perhaps it does not do it during the setup assistant which you must

Voiceover and background noises

2012-09-23 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

since updating to iOS 6, I have the impression that voiceover can't deal
with background noises as well as it used to do. For example, I have baby
adopter installed and was amazed by the fact that the volume of the
background music was automatically adjusted to voiceover's volume. When
voiceover was speaking, the volume was turned down a bit and the other way
round. On iOS 6, this seems to be messed up completely. When touching the
screen, the music and other sounds of the app are paused for a moment. It
all seems to run much less smoothly than before. Another thing I noticed was
the strange sound when sending a message with WhatsApp. This sound was very
distinct and clear before, but now it sounds as if it is muffled somehow.
Another thing I noticed is the fact that the sound you hear when starting
and finishing dictation is very quiet. The old sounds with the adjusted
volume just sounded much more natural. To cut it short: As long as you are
working with voiceover and with no background noises, everything sounds
fine. The misbalance only starts when voiceover and other sounds come
together. Do you face the same issue? Or do you know how you can get kind of
an acoustic balance between speech output and other sounds?

Best regards,

Alexandra

Hi Alexandra,

Does the volume only seem lower when it's on external speaker or also when
you use a headset? Try this and maybe plug your headset in and unplug it a
couple of times. If that doesn't help you could try a hard reset (hold down
the Home Key and Power Button at the same time and count to 12 or so). This
should reboot the phone, it may take some time to come back on, if it
doesn't after about 2 minutes give the Power Button a single firm press to
turn the phone back on and wait another 30 or 40 seconds (boot time depends
on whether you have an iPhone 4S or a 4).

Hi Wendy,

It does not say Voiceover On any more, just starts talking when you boot
up. Personally I don't really care as long as it talks.

As for the little bleep you get when you plug in the power cable, this still
is as it was. If you don't get it make sure you check your battery level in
the status bar and make sure it says the battery percentage and then
Charging. I only don't get this if I have a bad cable which doesn't charge
the phone any more, i.e. one that is broke.

RE: Downcast vs iOS Podcast Client

2012-09-23 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Neil, in addition to what others have said, I prefer downcast because:
There is great playlist management, giving you the ability to customise the
podcasts that are played back to back.
Podcast speed can be set on a podcast by podcast basis and retained.
Volume can be boosted on a podcast by podcast basis and retained. I find
this really good because some podcasts are recorded at quite a low level.
Continuous play behaviour can be set on a podcast by podcast basis.
When podcasts are behind a username and password, Downcast can log in.

If you want the description of an episode, in the Apple app, you have to tap
the more info button for each and every episode, whereas Downcast speaks
this info right on the screen as you review.

And finally, you can engage with the author of Downcast on Twitter. He
listens and makes changes based on user feedback.

Not sure if the Apple podcasts app supports sharing the episodes you are
listening to on Twitter and Facebook complete with a link that actually
plays the episode, but I like this about Downcast too.

Subject: RE: Weird behavior with voice over after updating

 Sieghard

Having an accented o and ñ in my first and last name, I have to access the
alternative accented characters in the keyboard all the time. It’s easy enough
by tapping the n or o as an example and split tapping on the keyboard somewhere
else and after that, you can lift your finger and drag it around or flick left
or right as if you were in standard typing mode and press and hold on the
letter with the alternative characters till you hear the three chimes. Which at
that point you can drag your finger to the left or right depending on which
character you’re on to select the particular accent or umlaut or whatever other
variation is available. The same holds true when you’re in the numbers or
symbols part of the keyboard and you want to use the inverted exxlamation or
question mark if writing in Spanish for example. Really, it’s not that big a
deal. I for a time had international keyboards on my device, but got rid of
them since I can access any alternative characters through this method without
having to bother with switching back and forth between layouts.

  Hello Jean-Philippe,

I agree that typing accented characters seems a bit awkward, but I certainly
don’t agree with you on the delete key issue. You can delete quickly by
repeatedly tapping and lifting your finger off the delete key, if you do it
fast enough you just hear the letters you are deleting just like I would if I
press the backspace or delete key quickly on my computer. Takes a bit of
practice since you do have to lift up and put down again exactly on the delete
key. What would be nice is if Apple could keep things the way they are with the
delete key and in addition to that re-enable split tapping just for the delete
key since for Shift and More Numbers the touch typing method is vastly better
than having to double tap or split tap.

Not quite sure yet what to think about the accented character thing, I have
to play around with it some more.

  Sieghard

  Hi all,
I sent the following request to Apple, trying to be as clear as I could.
If you agree with my disagreement, I would like you to do the same with your
own words.
  Thanks.

  Dear Apple team,
This new iOS version is great, but I would like to point out some unpleasant
issues with its revised touch typing mode.

1, It was a good move to give touch typing behaviour to keys such as capital
or other but not for the delete key. let me try and explain why.
In the previous iOS version, you could delete characters successively by
holding the delete key and split tapping as many times as you wanted. You had
full control of your delete speed because no matter where the second finger was
typing, the delete function was performed as long as the delete key was held.
Now, with iOS six, you must be very careful and accurate if you want to
delete successive characters, as you have to constantly hit and release the
delete key. The new delete double tap and hold function is too quick to let you
hear the feedback of what you are deleting, so it is unusable most of the time.
My wish is that the delete key was restored as it was in previous iOS
versions.

The second disadvantage is for non-English- users who use accented letters
frequently. It is true that keyboard latency has been improved because of this,
but it is now impossible to briefly hit a key and then double tap and hold it
to get its alternative characters. You now have to do three gestures, find the
right letter, split tap, and then double tap and hold to look for accents. May
I suggest if possible, that you give us the accents list as soon as split
tapping is performed, allowing us to scroll through it by sliding the second
finger, that would be much easyer.
  Thank you for your understanding,
  sincerely,
  Jean-Philippe

The problem comes is you open the thread and want to not read say the first

tie you then go back to the list of posts is does not focus on the post you
just read. I really love the new mail! However, I tend to delete threads I will

during a phonecall, it is now impossible to decrease the speaker

that, is that the balance between voice-over and the sound coming from
the line is such that you cannot use voice-over anymore to guide you

Mark,

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed the power drain issue, I have found

came to the conclusion.

 previous night.

The store opened at 8:00am sharp and, surprisingly, I was in the store by
 8:20am.

I was all set to purchase a black 64GB iPhone 5.

While the sales person was reviewing my account, etc, I took a look at the
display model of the device. I held it next to my 4 S and, after turning
VoiceOver on, began comparing various tests such as startup time, shutdown
time, display scrolling, sound quality, etc. I was truly disappointed in
 what I discovered.

I told the sales person to hold my iPhone 5 and help another customer while
I spent some time with iPHone 5. I spent a total of 2 hours exploring the
 device.

In the end, I decided not to buy the phone at this time, given that I am not
eligible for the full upgrade discount and the facts that I could see no
discernible different in phone speed between the 5 and the 4 S. Both the
sales person and I were surprised at my decision.

As I left the store, I expected to feel a pang of regret at not buying
iPhone 5. To date, no such regret has been experienced (smile).

One thing I've noticed since upgrading to iOS 6.0 on my 4 S, however, is the
massive drain on battery power in comparison to iOS 5.x. Now this could be
a game changer but not quite yet.

I think I will wait to see if they fix this battery drain issue in the
next/first update to iOS 6.0. If they do, great; if not, then I will
 definitely purchase iPhone 5.

Congratulations to all you who have iPHone 5, it is truly the best device
made by Apple, so far. I may join your number but, at present, I am content
to remain a lowly iPhone 4 S man (Smile).

 Making a Joyful Noise,

How to downgrade to IOS 5.1.1

2012-09-23 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hi list,
about a week ago or so people have just mentioned that it is possible to
downgrade to IOS5.1.1 in case someone doesn't likeIOS6.
It is not my situation since I haven't upgrade my Iphone 4 to IOS6 yet
but I think I will try and upgrade tomorrow.
Please would you be so kind to give me step-by-step instructions how to
downgrade to IOS5.1.1. I am asking for this just in case I do not like
new IOS or have some bugs.

Thank you in advance for your help. It will be very highly appreciated.
With kind regards
Maria
