Re: vo starter issue
Hi Paul, There's actually a space between abc and 123. You can check this by setting your rotor to characters and checking the entry you're supposed to enter. Perhaps that wasn't a good example for them to use, because they haven't yet gone through example of using the rotor. However, you'll find that if you leave a space between the letters and the numbers that you'll get an alert telling you the text you entered was correct. HTH. Re: charge button?
I've never found a charge button, where's that? Beware of non-Apple chargers, we just bought a pretty good look-alike, hwich was cheap and very nasty, it blew and fried the Mini. Tripped the house RCD thing in the power box too, so everything else went off. But the Mini was as dead as it could get and been on to Apple since they are still under warrantee. Worth being economic with details, doubt they'd be happy to know you fried it with a foreigner so to speak. Apple uses similar branding to refer to other products, such as the iPod Classic and iPod Video, which don't have internet access. I don't know off hand what the letter 'I' signifies in terms of branding but it wouldn't refer to internet. Keeping in mind that apps like Navigon can already work without an internet connection, this doesn't really have anything to do with it. It's an app developer's choice as to whether or not maps are going to be stored locally, and I imagine part of it is simply convenience and economical use of storage. For example, Blindsquare can work almost anywhere in the world with no need to download several gigabytes of maps first for offline storage. There's a huge convenience there. But of course, that convenience comes with a price which is that you can't use the app in question without internet access. Re: GPS program info needed
Most likely, the biggest problem with maps on the device verses online is licensing fees. Companies need to pay the map provider a fee per use. When the map is downloaded onto the iDevice, it counts as one continuous, ongoing use. When a person accesses the map online, the use is only counted whilst the map is being accessed. So, the company merely needs to pay for the maximum simultaneous uses, a significantly smaller number. Also, if the data being accessed is just a part of the total available data, the fees are even lower. Re: Will The Keyboard Be There?
I usually use the earphones to answer a call and the keyboard is not there. It is very nerve wracking to try and listen to the choices and then at the same time listen to voice over requiring me to unlock phone, open phone app and then press keyboard. Then I need to figure out which numbers I am feeling for. By then the call is usually over and I have lost the opportunity to input information. Question about pausing Word Ladder game
I really enjoy playing Word Ladder but have been frustrated when the phone rings and it kicks me out of the game and does not remember the answers I had entered. The update says that it can be paused when the phone rings but I have no idea how to do this. IPod Touch reset
Listers, My IPod Touch fourth generation (with latest software updates) and Brailliant Braille Display have lost bluetooth connection. Despite checking everything I can think of, reconnection is not happening. Maybe, I need to reset the IPod but the way to do this seems to have changed since I was told the procedure to follow. According to my memory, the way to reset was to press the home button until VO said something like reset, then to double tap and wait for the IPod to shut down and restart. Question about De Steno Games
For anyone who plays De Steno games, I have a question. On the Run For President Game, when it asks you to enter an answer to one of the state and capital questions, how do you enter it? Has anyone used the Dish Network App Dish Anywhere?
Hi. I wanted to know whether anyone has used the Dish Network app Dish Anywhere? If so, is it accessible? The reason I ask is because right now with Dish Network, we have a standard receiver. If I wanted to purchase the Dish Network App, we would need to sign up with DVR service and get a high definition receiver. It would add an additional $7 to our bill for a 24 month commitment. I just don't want to bother with a service that I can't use for 24 months if it is not accessible. If it is, I'm glad to do it and to have the app. Please let me know if you have used it. Thanks. RE: Better case
Hi Simon, You can't believe how many cases there are out there. If you go to Google and search for cases for IPhone 4S you will probably be reading the results all day. If you want to actually feel what you are going to get, then you can go to the Apple store or your telephone provider who usually carry a variety. Some cases give you a lot of protection but make your phone very bulky. Some cases are very slim and give very little protection so, you need to decide the right combination for you depending on your lifestyle. Someone who works on a construction site will need a case that offers more protection than a person who works in an office with a carpeted floor so you need to do some research as to what is best for you. I would just follow normal battery saving techniques like making sure you turn off Bluetooth and especially WiFi if you are out and about and don’t use it. WiFi uses up a fair amount of battery. Also make sure you don’t have any GPS apps running unless you need them and don’t set location based reminders like “Remind me to call John when I get home”, these use location services and drain your battery faster. If that is not enough you would be much better off trying to find either aa battery case or an external battery which would allow you to charge your phone when it gets below 10%, if you try and find something with at least 1500 to 1800 MA you should be able to charge your phone back to 100% if you start when you get the 10% notification. RE: New 4square layout
If you haven't updated on your computer or synced with your computer since the upgrade, you could delete the app from your phone and then sync it again from your computer. Otherwise, you can't do it. Re: Question about De Steno Games
A blind person had someone create a DOS interpreter for iOS. You can find the games in the Apple App Store. For one letter answers, just press the letter and the game automatically goes to the next screen. For typed answers, activate the return button in the lower right corner of the keyboard after you have typed your entry. To spin the wheel, activate the return button. They function about as well as the original DOS games. The original games crashed in my old DOS system 15 years ago about as often as they crash in iOS now. Re: New 4square layout
Jailbreaking is not necessary to downgrade an app. However, iTunes, a computer, and a previous version of the app residing on the computer are necessary for downgrading an app. If you do not have all of the three listed above, you will not be able to downgrade the app, even if you have jailbroken, because you can no longer get a previous version from the App Store. To downgrade an app, move the older version of the app in to the app folder of iTunes. Delete the newer version of the app from the iPhone. Connect the iPhone to the computer. go to the apps radial button under the iPhone in iTunes and click it. Go to the list of apps in the choices past the radial buttons and put a check in the app name (select the app). Sync and the previous version will be installed. After installing an older version, do not use upgrade all as App Store update feature will always notify you of the app being out-of-date. You will need to update apps individually. The 'i' in iPhone [was Re: GPS program info needed]
I did a quick search on Google, and apparently the near consensus is that the 'i' originally stood for internet and that the iMac was the first product to carry this brand. Afterwards, it became a branding/marketing statement and applied to devices that didn't necessarily include the internet connectivity. Consequently, the meaning of the 'i' was broadened somewhat. As I said, almost every web page I found in the quick Google search I did had the same story. This page http://www.irisclasson.com/2013/02/10/stupid-question-147-what-does-the-lowercase-letter-i-in-iphone-stand-for/ said the following and was pretty indicative: The i was for internet, but was later expanded to also stand for “Internet, Individual, Instruct, Inform, and Inspire”. Why internet? Internet was the hottest thing at the time, and this machine would allow the users to access that easy and fast. It was the main selling point at the time, and the meaning of the letter was later expanded to symbolize other things the users might perceive perceive as important. On 04/14/2013 10:18 AM, Raul A. Re: New 4square layout
One more thing to add to the below excellent post is that if you happen to be jailbroken, there is a tweak called update Hider which can be used to hide updates from individual apps. When this tweak is used and individual apps are hidden from updates, then you can use the update all feature from the app store directly from the iPhone. However in all cases when you have an app which is older and you do not want to update it, you cannot use the update all future from iTunes itself because that will override the older app with the new. I always keep a folder called mobile application.old where I put older versions of apps which I know work well. This way when I see an app update involving an app that I use a lot and whose interface is important to me, I will go and copy it to this old folder and that way I have the option of reinstalling it in case the newer update is no good. --- Sent from Raul's iPhone - (832) 554-7285. Moderator updates for Sunday, April 14
Hello all. This is just a friendly moderator update on this wonderful Sunday afternoon April 14, 2013. First, I believe the thread on what do they do or any discussions regarding which questions are appropriate, stupid, useless, or unwanted, needs to now come to an end. I don't believe there is anything new which can be added to this thread. So I am hoping that 24 hours after I send this message everyone will have had enough time to read and can stop posting about it. I don't like to dictate what people can and can not post on the list, however I think that this needs to be said even though I feel it shouldn't have to be. If you read a message on the list which you feel is inappropriate, or the question is stupid, or the list poster should have the ability to find the answer for themselves, just do everyone a favor and delete it. However if you are so inclined to give a response, I asked that the response be phrased in a constructive criticized manner. For example, maybe you can answer their question and point out where they might have found the answer themselves. I do not want people feeling like they cannot post questions to the list without having to show credentials such as already have looked through Google or the list archives. Whether you, me, or anyone else feels that someone is being lazy or not, we really do not know if it is from laziness or lack of technical skills that other research isn't done. I have tried to take this approach on messages that I respond to. If I personally feel that someone has the ability to help themselves and is choosing not to, I might not respond to their message. Or it is possible I may just not have time to respond to a message in such a way where I give the answer plus an idea of where they can help themselves. Second, recently there have been a few posters who have hijacked threats. I have mentioned this before and will mention it again. If you are reading a message and you want to write a new message to the list, pressing reply and changing the subject and adding your own new message is not the way to do it. If your reply is part of that subject you are reading then definitely yes, use the reply button and add to the discussion. However if it is about something totally different, the best thing to do is start a new message. From most Windows programs the hockey is control plus and. I believe from the Mac it is command plus and. And of course from the eye device it is the compose button. When you start a new thread with your own discussion, it will be exposed to more and you will have a higher chance of getting responses and you will not have to hear from me privately. I realize of course that there may be some list members who don't know what the list address is, and so replying and starting a new discussion is easier. The list address is viphone@Googlegroups.com. Please take a note of this address so you can start your own conversations instead of hijacking and existing one. Third, if you have a problem with a list of member or do not feel this list is being run the way you think it should, write me privately and let me know your concern. I will respond to you and will at least acknowledge your message. I cannot promise what will come of your suggestion, but I can't promise to listen. Similarly if you have a problem with the way a certain list member posts messages, either take it up privately with that list member or write me directly and I will try and deal with the situation. Fourth, Let us all remember tolerance toward other people. Remember that not everyone has the same technical skills or background as everyone else. What might seem like an easy thing for you might be a challenge for someone else. If you want to share your knowledge and experience with someone who might be having some trouble, please do so as that is the purpose for this list. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. If you are in the USA, I hope you already filed your taxes. --- Sent from Raul's iPhone - (832) 554-7285. Re: arranging roter so that edit is is near characters and words
Hi Mickey, To reorder your rotor options, go to Settings General Accessibility VoiceOver then flick right to the Rotor button and double tap. I find that in order to arrange the rotor so that the settings for characters and words are next to the edit option, I have to flick right to the reorder characters button, double tap and hold, then move this all the way down to the bottom of the list of rotor items. By default, the rotor options for characters, words, and lines, are listed first. You' need to move them last – below Vertical Navigation if you are in the default rotor screen, if you want them to appear beside edit. Check this by clicking the home button once to go to home screen, then again to move to the spotlight search text box. You'll find your last item beside edit in the counterclockwise direction, and the next-to-the last item, which could be words one more counterclockwise turn beyond that. HTH. I don't really understand the point of the more breakfast, etc. apps. I make eggs and bacon in real life frequently. What is the appeal of these apps? RE: Question about De Steno Games
I have not played it for a while but you probably need to double tap the text box before you can enter your answer. It used to be one of my favorite games back in the late '80's and early 90's and I have played on the iPhone a few times but, generally when I have tried I am interrupted so many times that I don't finish the game. Oh, used to play destination Mars a lot also on the computer. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Chasity Jackson Sent: Sunday, April 14, 2013 6:39 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Question about De Steno Games For anyone who plays De Steno games, I have a question. Printer Pro: Can one print over 3-4 G via proxy?
Hello, I was using Print Central, but it seems like some of the features are broken or less accessible with VO. The one feature that was nice was the ability to set up a proxy and be able to print over ones cell data plan. Can this be set up in Printer Pro? Re: IPod Touch reset
Hi Irene, Smiles So far as I know, the correct way to reset is to press and hold both the sleep/wake and Home buttons for about 10 seconds ... I would only do this if you really need to. I'd first go to settings, general, bluetooth and, where you can connect your device (if it hasn't connected), you can say Forget this device. You can then start from scratch. I suggest a reboot of both Brailliant and Ipod before re-pairing. Give me a call, if you want, if you're still stuck. Others may well chime in ... Re: Voice Memos - How do I change recording Level?
Tony, I haven't used this to record since my early days with the pod, when I think all was fine. I've just tried it with our iPod Touch and, like you, found the recording level incredibly low. Maybe this is a hitch with later versions ... If you have a pair of Apple earphones with mic then give it a go and see what it's like. I'd be interested in your findings. (If you haven't used yours before, the mic is very small and mounted on the cable nearest the right-hand earpiece, on the newest ones anyway, though I think the older ones may be different. Carol P I am still fairly new to the iPhone and have just been trying to use Voice Memos – which I feel could be a very useful app. However, on my iPhone 4S I find that the recording level is very low and I should like to turn it up. On the app itself I cannot find any recording level control and neither can I find anything in settings – unless, of course, I have missed it. On my Brailliant BI32 I have used the keystroke to increase volume but this makes no difference. I should be very grateful if someone can let me into this secret! I look forward to receiving some help. I use the Amazing Slowdowner. It works great. To change the speed you need to double tap and hold. Try moving your finger up or down to move slowly, or left to right to move fast. Yes that's true on the other hand, if you have no phone access because you've found yourself in a dead zone, there goes your GPS navigation. - Original Message - From: Grant Hardy grantha...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, April 14, 2013 1:56 AM Subject: Re: GPS program info needed Apple uses similar branding to refer to other products, such as the iPod Classic and iPod Video, which don't have internet access. Re: just curious: more breakfast, sundaes, etc.
Michael As a mom, I use these games to teach my 3 year old order of operation. These also great games for imaginative play when one doesn't have room in their home for a pretend kitchen set, can't afford a pretend kitchen set or for imaginative play while on the go. From a teacher's point of view these games help students learn order of operation and helps with development of fine motor skills. And some just like the idea of being able to cook without making a mess or just to pass time. Donna I don't really understand the point of the more breakfast, etc. apps. I make eggs and bacon in real life frequently. What is the appeal of these apps? Is it a time thing (how fast can you do it,) or some other aspect I haven't thought of? Re: Filter.
Hi Yes, make a folder first. Otherwise you will not have a place to save the emails. In step 15. Do also use theese filter on conversations below a checkmark here moves a whole lot of emails into the folder. I suspect that also deleted emails from way back moves into ViPhone. Thousands of ViPhone related if you have been a member for about 6 mount´s or more. I completely agree with you (this was the exact point that I was making). Re: GPS program info needed
Yes, that's a fair point. Perhaps developers need to implement a model where maps could be locally stored for an extra in-app purchase, but then that approach would likely make development of that app much harder. Grant On 4/14/13, David Chittenden dchitten...@gmail.com wrote: Most likely, the biggest problem with maps on the device verses online is licensing fees. Re: New 4square layout
If you for go the update all option, you can update individual apps, so you can just skip the app you don't want to update. This only works if you know you want to avoid an update. If you are trail blazing for the rest of us though, you might want to roll back an update. My own experience with Four Square is a few accessibility issues seem to show up in each major update but Four Square is pretty good about getting them resolved fairly quickly in subsequent minor updates. It might be a good candidate to skip updating until you get the thumbs up from the list. BTW, I've read of some apps available to you if you jail break that will allow you to pin an app at a certain level. This way, you can avoid some tedium by using the update all button while keeping some problem apps from being updated. Re: Accessible Music ID Apps?
Hi there. My personal favorite is called music ID. I like it because the paid version is only one dollar and because it does not have ads. Recently Kim comando had an article on some of the apps which use up the most data. Shazam While being one of the most popular music identification apps, was one of the apps which uses the most dated because of all the ads in it. Music ID is a lighter weight program I feel. Because there are no ads it does not feel sluggish like some apps tend to with ads. One of the other features I really like about it is that it will show the lyrics to the song you identify. Along with that, it will also show links to the YouTube version of the song so if you do not have the song you can go and listen to it. I have provided a link below. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/musicid-with-lyrics/id320029865?mt=8 --- Sent from Raul's iPhone - (832) 554-7285. Please excuse any dictation or auto complete errors. Re: Facebook on iPhone
Hello. You might try using status report or focus for Facebook. The problem with these apps is that even though they are a bit more accessible, you do not get the entire full Facebook experience as you would otherwise with the free and default Facebook app. If your main concern is to read the status of your friends and comment or like the status, then perhaps it does not matter as much. Re: Finding mail folders on iPhone 4S
Hello there. From your inbox list you should find a back button on the upper left corner of the screen. Double tap that and then you will see your accounts list. Scroll all the way to the bottom because the first section is only for your inboxes but the second section is for your inboxes plus folders. For example if you have an account called Google, it will be listed twice because the one in the upper section of your screen is for the Google inbox yet the one in the lower section of this list is for the Google account which includes the inbox and all the other folders. So be sure and double tap the second one under the accounts section. When you do this you will see the list of folders beginning with the inbox at the top. Scroll down by doing continuous right flics or by doing the three finger swipe up.
