Re: iPhone 7 4.7-inch or iPhone7 Plus 5.5-inch?

2016-09-09 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
I went originally from the 4S to the 6 Plus, and although it does take some
getting use to the larger phone, I think the extra battery life is worth it.
It just depends on your budget and what you will use the phone for. I am also
due for an upgrade and am trying to figure out the details with my plan and
costs for upgrading, but if I do go ahead and buy it, I am sticking with the
Plus model, it kind of feels odd to go back to the smaller screen. Plus with
the dual camera on the Plus only, I wonder if that might improve OCR scanning.

Subject:iPhone 7 4.7-inch or iPhone7 Plus 5.5-inch?

Hi all,

Later today I'll be upgrading my 6s to the current model.

Just wondering to those of you have the larger plus version is it worth
it to go big this time or stay with the 4.7-inch?

The improved battery life is the only up side I think.

Your thoughts and comments welcome.

Re: Belkin's coming out with the adapter some of us need

2016-09-09 Thread Regina Alvarado
As I have only seen one Android I do not know if the phone Jack is on it, but
for some maybe this would be a good replacement to the new Apple? I have been
told Talk Back is a pretty good program. I believe too that because Apple has
removed the Jack, if well received by the general public, it will also
disappear from the Android and Windows phones. I think fortunately or
unfortunately we are a subset given drops of accessibility and as we are now
using mainstream devices we are at the public's mercy. Doesn't make it right,
just a fact, and we want parity with our sighted counterparts, right? Kind of
like the ERA. Put women in combat when some said they should never be. Change
is hard, and I sure understand the deaf/blind problem (with my hearing
deficit(, but there are ways around the problems, inconvenient yes but not
worth waging a war over. Tell Apple accessibility or hold onto old phones or
yell here if you must, but the earphone jack is gone, and there are much, much
more important problems with Voice-over that Apple should be addressing in my
opinion.

jack back in a future device, although like I said, I would doubt it.

I'm also not sure how much of my regret over missing the headphone jack is
because I'm blind. I suppose I use my headphones more than my sighted peers
because I'll tend to grab them every time I just want to check the lock screen,
but I don't think it's just blind users who'll be wishing their new phone had a
headphone jack on it that they've taken for granted on all of their electronics
for years.

It also sounds like you're saying we, especially as blind consumers, shouldn't
criticize Apple for a decision they made. I'm curious, are you just talking
about Apple or all companies? Are you just talking about blind consumers or all
consumers? For how much Apple wants me to pay to get an iPhone 7, I think I'm
allowed to criticize a decision Apple made. I for one don't think Apple is
perfect, and I'm not just going to assume that they'll never make a mistake and
they always know what's best for me. This isn't a knock on Apple, but just
those who think we should just be thankful for whatever Apple decides we as
consumers and blind consumers should be happy with.

I agree, I would doubt very much that Apple would go back on their
change, there's enough Apple fanatics out there that just buy anything
that Apple makes, so even if some of us boycott the 7, it will never be
enough to affect the $$$ that they are raking in with the iPhone sales.
We'll just have to either live with it or just change phones and jump to
Android.

Re: KNFB Reader with PDF FILE

2016-09-09 Thread Chris Chaffin
Depends on what method you use to get it on your phone.
If by email attachment, just do a double tap and hold on the attachment and
wait for the pop up menu. In that menu are normally several copy to choices,
and you would want to choose copy to KNFB Reader.
If by Dropbox, go to and double tap on the PDF file, then on the next screen of
the file, double tap the More Actions Menu. A menu will appear, double tap
export, then swipe to Open in, and double tap.
Within that open in pop up menu, you should find copy to KNFB Reader.

Hope all of this helps,

Chris

Yes, you can open PDf files in KNFB Reader by using Dropbox or by use of an

After you have opened it in KNFB Reader, you can even save the scanned

Christopher, can I ask a very stupid question? What is the difference between

Therefore, I tend to think the edges are accessible, but I don't have an S7

Re: Belkin's coming out with the adapter some of us need

2016-09-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I suspect you're right that the headphone jack is gone for good, but
it's definitely true if anyone who misses the headphone jack doesn't let
Apple know how much they miss it. There's also no reason Apple couldn't
put the headphone jack back in a future device, although like I said, I
would doubt it.

I'm also not sure how much of my regret over missing the headphone jack
is because I'm blind. I suppose I use my headphones more than my sighted
peers because I'll tend to grab them every time I just want to check the
lock screen, but I don't think it's just blind users who'll be wishing
their new phone had a headphone jack on it that they've taken for
granted on all of their electronics for years.

It also sounds like you're saying we, especially as blind consumers,
shouldn't criticize Apple for a decision they made. I'm curious, are you
just talking about Apple or all companies? Are you just talking about
blind consumers or all consumers? For how much Apple wants me to pay to
get an iPhone 7, I think I'm allowed to criticize a decision Apple made.
I for one don't think Apple is perfect, and I'm not just going to assume
that they'll never make a mistake and they always know what's best for
me. This isn't a knock on Apple, but just those who think we should just
be thankful for whatever Apple decides we as consumers and blind
consumers should be happy with.

need power sooner, I'll buy the Belcan thingie.

You figured that something like this was eventually going to come out by a

Off putting though that you have to shell out an extra $40.00 for
something that’s not even really a mobile solution. Curious to see what kind of
battery pack designs these same companies are going to come up with for those
of us who may want or need that extra backup. There goes another $40.00 or
$80.00 or whatever on top of everything else. That and what type of solution
they’re going to come up with for all the credit card swipers that are so
ubiquitous Appel was actually getting credit yesterday for only selling the

their pound of flesh one way or another.
Those dongles are probably viewed as a lost leader anyway.

RE: Surprise!! iPhone 7 Models From AT and T-Mobile Do Not Support CDMA Networks

2016-09-09 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G.
Hi,

I’m curious how this works.

I have an iPhone 6 with Verizon that comes off contract in October. If I buy an
unlocked phone from Apple when available, can I just transfer my iPhone 6 sim
card into the new phone, and that’s it. Or, would Verizon need to get involved
somehow with the new phone activation, and would that be problematic?

Also, I seem to recall that phones of that generation were already unlocked. Is
that the case, or will I need to get Verizon to unlock the iPhone 6?

Many thanks. Keith

You can just wait a few weeks until they release an unlocked version. I think
last year, unlocked phones started popping up around the beginning of
November. This is what I plan on doing as I have nearly $200.00 in redeemable
BestBuy points that I‘m going to use to offset the phone’s cost.
If you want to go for last year’s model, the Apple store is selling the 6S,
6S Plus and SE unlocked. I think the SE 64GB dropped to $450.00 for example.

OK, let's say you go through the Apple store online and buy an unlocked phone.
But apparently, you have to declare a carrier. So if you declare T-Mobile or
AT, then pay for your phone, will you be getting one with one of those modems
that won't work on the CDMA? I guess the safe thing would be to declare Verizon
or Sprint.

iPhone 7 Models From AT and T-Mobile Do Not Support CDMA Networks
MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors / Joe Rossignol

Choosing which iPhone model to purchase this year should be more carefully
considered, as both AT and T-Mobile models of the iPhone
7 and iPhone 7 Plus do not support
CDMA networks such as Verizon and Sprint in the United States. Apple confirmed
the matter in fine print in the iPhone 7 tech
specs and on its
LTE page.

A customer that purchases an iPhone 7 from Apple's website and selects AT as
their carrier, for example, would be unable to later use the smartphone on
Verizon, Sprint, or any other CDMA network, even if the device is unlocked. By
comparison, all iPhone 6s and
iPhone 6s Plus models worked on both GSM and CDMA networks.

A customer that purchases an iPhone 7 from Apple's website and selects Verizon
as their carrier, on the other hand, would also be able to use the smartphone
on AT, T-Mobile, Sprint, or any other GSM or CDMA network.

It was previously reported that Apple would switch to Intel
modems for
select iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models, including AT
models,

2016-09-09 Thread Nancy Badger
If you open the file on your phone, there is a button in the upper left corner
that vo says “open in.” If you double tap it, then you have a list of apps that
you can open the PDF with. KNFB reader should be one of those apps.

backing up the phone

2016-09-09 Thread Marie Lyons
This is a cautionary tale with a happy ending. On Thursday night I couldn’t get
Siri and voiceover to work. The last time that happened I plugged it into my
computer and voila. I tried it again but couldn’t do anything with the phone.
Well I thought that since I couldn’t do anything else I may as well back up the
phone. I called disability support. We had to do a restore to the phone. Well I
restored to the backup I made the night before and was all up to date. The
moral of the story is backup your phone.

Not Jonathan, but yes, iOS 10 along with watchOS 3 and maybe tvOS 10 will be
available to the public Tuesday 13 September. I didn’t watch the keynote

Hi!
Better battery time and better cammera it is, but we heard this.
There's also some kind of split screen when using the phone in
  landscape view similar to iPad.
Besides this I'm not sure will the Seven have something more. I'm
using 6S Plus and talking from its perspective. If you have some
vision left Plus model is a must have but if you're completely
sightless than it is up to you do you need these extras or not.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Groups in Message

2016-09-09 Thread Bill Gallik
Several weeks ago I received a text message from a niece, that message was also
sent to several other individuals in my CONTACTS but there were several
addressees that I don’t know at all. When I replied to this message it was
routed to all addressees and now when I try to send a message to any one of the
addressees I know that was in that first message it gets addressed to the
entire group.

For example, my niece Kim was in the original list of addressees and when I
tried to send her a message this morning it was sent to the entire list from
that first message sent by my niece Kathy.

How in heck do I get rid of this annoying, unintended group messaging?

Re: backing up the phone

2016-09-09 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone
Marie,

I have have had this problem from time to time with the 6S. I have found that
Siri gets me out of the problem. I askSiri for voice-over to be put on,
assuming that it is turned off, and Siri sometimes says that it is already on.
I therefore say turn voice-over off. After doing this I can then ask for
voice-over to be put back on once again and it then works!I think it is another
of those voice-over bugs and I must report it. I am really waiting to see
whether it happens to me with iOS 10.

I hope this helps!

Re: iPhone 7 4.7-inch or iPhone7 Plus 5.5-inch?

2016-09-09 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Thanks all for the feedback.

In the end I went for the iPhone 7 4.7-inch version 128GB in gold.

Really wanted jet black but it sold out like hot cakes!

Besides this I'm not sure will the Seven have something more. I'm
using 6S Plus and talking from its perspective. If you have some

Later today I'll be upgrading my 6s to the current model.

Just wondering to those of you have the larger plus version is it
worth it to go big this time or stay with the 4.7-inch?

The improved battery life is the only up side I think.

Your thoughts and comments welcome.

What I don't get is why some people care so much about the fact that
others regret losing the headphone jack that they're going to insult and
put down people on this list. Why does anyone else care that I don't
like losing the headphone jack? How is that bothering anyone else?
Aren't we all allowed to have our opinions even if they don't agree with
someone else on the list?

For me, I don't want to have to keep track of another little pigtail. I
frequently switch headphones from device to device, and now before I can
do that, I'll need to make sure I have my adapter with me. True, it's
not a big deal, but just another thing to worry about. Sure, someday
I'll have headphones that will work with my PC and my smart phone
without needing an adapter, but I'm not there yet. Sure this isn't
important to everyone else, but I don't see why caring about a feature
more than someone else makes me pathetic.

What have I gained by losing the headphone jack? Is the iPhone 7 thinner
than the iPhone 6? Is it more water proof? Couldn't I still use
Lightning connected headphones with my iPhone 6, assuming I had any? Is
it cheaper now because Apple doesn't need to include this extra hardware
and incorporate it into it's design?

Re: Belkin's coming out with the adapter some of us need

2016-09-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
There is at least one Android handset that beat Apple to the punch when
it came to removing the headphone jack, but most of the Android phones
still have a headphone jack.

IMHO, it'll be hard to tell for Apple to tell if the iPhone 7 is being
well received just because they removed the headphone jack. I'm not sure
what removing the headphone jack actually buys anyone right now. Any
improved audio fidelity you get with the Lightning connected headphones,
you would still see even if the headphone jack was still there. Sure,
you may see thinner and more waterproof phones in the future, but for
now, I don't think anyone is seeing the advantages of Apple ditching the
headphone jack except for Apple and peripheral makers.

I think if the iPhone 7 is received well, it'll be for features that
have been added and not those that have been removed.

general public, it will also disappear from the Android and Windows
phones. I think fortunately or unfortunately we are a subset given drops
of accessibility and as we are now using mainstream devices we are at
the public's mercy. Doesn't make it right, just a fact, and we want
parity with our sighted counterparts, right? Kind of like the ERA. Put

I sure understand the deaf/blind problem (with my hearing deficit(, but
there are ways around the problems, inconvenient yes but not worth
waging a war over. Tell Apple accessibility or hold onto old phones or
yell here if you must, but the earphone jack is gone, and there are
much, much more important problems with Voice-over that Apple should be
addressing in my opinion.

would doubt it.

My question is still how large are they going to allow these devices to become?

2016-09-09 Thread Dianne Phelps
I still question why the size keeps enlarging? When I upgraded the last
time, I looked at the 6 and 6+, which, I felt was like carrying a tablet
around. That may well be important for sighted consumers, but I am tired of
trying of carrying these huge things around. I need something which fits in
a pocket without falling out or in a small purse. I need decent sound and
some ability to connect with my hearing aids. This all means I am still
interested in the SE. Having a nice camera on board would be nice for when I
want to hand my phone to someone to take a picture, though since my sister
and sister-in-law are the shutter bug historians for our family, it is not
totally necessary for me.

With the sizes as they now are, I may as well pack my Surface around.

I like a great deal of what Apple has done with this product and for their
attention to our needs with Voiceover and commend them for these products. I
need Siri to become more accurate, though, it has improved immensely from
its beginning and anticipate continued improvement. The camera concerns me
only in as much as I depend upon KNFB reader, and the best quality of camera
we can have may be important to its performance. I figure the SE may be
better than the camera on the 6.

Lastly, I think the reason the size of the 6 also bothers me is, because I
have small hands, and I find the larger size harder to hold at times,
especially when using the KNFB Reader. I find it difficult to both hold the
iPhone and double tap to take the picture.

Ok, I am off my cantankerous soap box now. Just my thoughts since for me
earphone jack or not isn't the largest issue.

Relax and enjoy the weekend. As my great grandmother used to say, it will
all come out in the "worsh". She was Irish and wash came out sounding like
worsh.

CapitalOne Wallet Breaking VoiceOver Thread

Hello Everyone,

First, let me thank all of you who joined me in requesting that VoiceOver
accessibility be restored to the CapitalOne Wallet app for iOS.

Second, The CapitalOne twitter team has been in contact with me ever since I
contacted them.

Third, today, they informed me that the developers are aware of the problem
and that this problem will be addressed in a future release.

In the meantime, they discovered a workaround gesture which allows VoiceOver
users to easily switch between credit card accounts.

To be honest, I explored using this gesture before raising the alarm,
however, it would appear that the gesture, at present, only works when done
while focus is first placed on any line item of the currently displayed
credit card.

Simply stated, in order to switch between multiple credit card, in the
current version of the CapitalOne Wallet App, for iOS, use a three-finger
swipe from left to right or right to left. Before attempting this gesture,
however, first place focus on any line item; basically, any line item
located in the bottom half of the display, not including the line containing
the Tabs.

The very excellent customer service I've received via Twitter is just
another reason why Twitter has become my most absolute favorite way to deal
with any company's customer service team.

If you have not done so already, I strongly encourage you to explore and
begin to engage with others on Twitter.

Mark

Re: listening and charging and thoughts on the presentation

2016-09-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't think it's stupid at all. Remember, I don't have an S7 Edge
myself, so I'm just going by what I've read, what I've seen on lists and
what my friends and relatives who have an S7 Edge have told me.

The curved edges give you a bit more real estate in the same form
factor. The S7 Edge for example has a 5.5 inch screen while the S7 has a
5.1 inch screen and the dimensions are basically identical.

The Edge can be used a bit easier with one hand since you can place your
favorite contacts and apps on the edges and reach them with the fingers
of the hand holding the device. You can also have information sent to
the screens on the edges, so for example, you could place your phone
face down so you won't get interrupted with vibrations or ring tones but
still see messages appear on the edges or have them change colors to
indicate you have a call or a message from someone in particular.
Samsung recently opened up the interfaces to the edges, so app
developers can now think of all sorts of ways to take advantages of the
edges.

Finally, it just makes the S7 Edge look and feel cool!

I'm not sure how much a blind person can take advantage of these
features, but like I said, I'd expect an Apple implementation to be
similar and accessible. Apple will also open this up to developers down
the road, if Apple takes this path, and again you'll have innovative app
developers coming up with all kinds of things.

I've read on different Android lists both that the edges of the S7 Edge

people who state they're accessible tend to actually have an S7 Edge,
whereas those who say they aren't accessible don't and are just
repeating what they've heard. Therefore, I tend to think the edges are
accessible, but I don't have an S7 Edge myself. Either way, if an iPhone
were to have edges then I'm sure Apple would make them accessible with
VoiceOver. That doesn't mean that they'll turn out to be particularly
useful for a blind person, or a sighted person either.

since my first iPhone, a for S. The improved sound will be nice, but
it wouldn't be compelling for me in and of itself. The loss of the
headphone jack doesn't make a difference to me personally. So I'm
going to go for an upgrade from a 6S to a seven. I don't like the
plus. It's too big. I'm actually not so sure I'm looking forward to a
new form factor. They are talking about the curved thing like Samsung
has with their edge. As I understand it, that extra screen, the edge,
isn't accessible. Now maybe Apple will find a way to make that
happen. Still, I just don't see the point. Wireless charging, still
don't care. Better screen? Again, don't care. So all the new stuff
they're talking about for next year I guess I just don't find all
that appealing. Different strokes.

Is
it cheaper now because Apple doesn't need to include this extra hardware
and incorporate it into it's design?

well! if you don’t want to buy the adaptor, you should know the answer!

Trust me, if belkin, didn’t think, these products were wanted, they wouldn’t
manufacture them.

Also, apple should have realised, that a lot of us, including sighted people,
need the ability, to charge our phones whilst listening, and for those of us,
who are out and about, through the day, and have to make many phone calls and
use voiceover, need this option!

I heartily agree with Daniel, what's wrong with you people? What is it about
the fact that Apple is included in the adapter with the new iPhone 7 that you
don't get? Or is this another play a part of somebody who seems to be an
opportunist to sell something that we don't need to buy?

Re: Did I miss it again... Jonathan's new book preorder?

2016-09-09 Thread Jenifer Barr
Thank you Jonathan.
Am I to assume correctly that IOS 10 comes out Tuesday? No, I didn't
listen to the keynote this past week, I wasn't able to and as the
iPhone 7 is not on my radar I didn't feel the need. I'm rather bummed
I missed the one in June where IOS 10 was featured, but alas.
This is by far, handsdown, the most well-written series of books
written for the blind for IOS. If anyone has never purchased any of
the IOS without the I series yet, I would strongly recommend you do
so. Justsayin. Cutos to Jonathan for providing this series.

I was just reading in my News app, in the text section, and according to an
article, the 7+ has 3 GB of RAM, one more than the seven. That was rumored to
be true, and apparently it is. Also, according to the verge you can use those
fancy new AirPods with non-Apple devices, since they are Bluetooth. You won't
get the instant pairing etc.

Re: iPhone 7 4.7-inch or iPhone7 Plus 5.5-inch?

I have seen a few articles stating that the plus has 3 GB of RAM versus two for
the seven. They are basing that on geek bench scores, since nobody has actually
torn one of these apart yet. That extra gigabyte of RAM might be a good thing.

Re: Getting Rid of Unwanted Groups in Message

2016-09-09 Thread Bill Gallik
I’ve done exactly that; to the point where I have no messages lingering in my
Messages folders. Still, when i try to send a message to any one of my three
nieces the entire group is addressed.

Hmmm, I wonder if the fact that my Mac Mini, iPad and iPhone are linked and I
haven’t made sure all three have messages cleared out is causing this
problem?!?!

Think I’ll clean out messages in all three devices and see if that helps.

Re: iPhone 7 4.7-inch or iPhone7 Plus 5.5-inch?

2016-09-09 Thread Chris Chaffin

Before I made a final decision regarding which phone I got, I would want to
hold each one to see which one I liked the best because of the size difference.
This is a personal preference and the decision can only be made by you.
I personally do not like the size of the plus phones, but that is just me, and
there is many that love them.
Since the 6s phones are the same size, then you could just take a look at them
just to determine which size you like the best.

Then if size does not really matter, then you can look at the other specks of
both phones and see if the additional features of the Plus are worth the extra
cost.

Hope this helps,

Chris

RE: Belkin's coming out with the adapter some of us need

2016-09-09 Thread Larry Lumpkin
Folks. The headphone jack is gone for good and I think we should move on.
Apple made that decision years ago and every blind user in the world wasn't
going to alter that decision. Charging while listening isn't a big deal for me
but I'm retired and don't use my phone all that much for calling anyway. If I
need power sooner, I'll buy the Belcan thingie.

It would be cool if iPhone SE with 3.5mm beats iPhone 7, 7+ hard on the sales
figures. Don’t think so, but …… Camera is too important for sighted people.

Take care

want, you can go back and listen to the 2016 WWDC presentation using this

Folks. The headphone jack is gone for good and I think we should move on.
Apple made that decision years ago and every blind user in the world wasn't
going to alter that decision. Charging while listening isn't a big deal for
me but I'm retired and don't use my phone all that much for calling anyway.
If I need power sooner, I'll buy the Belcan thingie.

You figured that something like this was eventually going to come out by a
mainstream company or via a kickstarter campaign.

Off putting though that you have to shell out an extra $40.00 for
something that’s not even really a mobile solution. Curious to see what
kind of battery pack designs these same companies are going to come up
with for those of us who may want or need that extra backup. There goes
another $40.00 or $80.00 or whatever on top of everything else. That and
what type of solution they’re going to come up with for all the credit
card swipers that are so ubiquitous Appel was actually getting credit
yesterday for only selling the replacement dongles for $9.00, but I guess
this shows they’re going to get their pound of flesh one way or another.

Those dongles are probably viewed as a lost leader anyway.

Re: Surprise!! iPhone 7 Models From AT and T-Mobile Do Not Support CDMA Networks

2016-09-09 Thread Kelly Pierce
Keith,

You likely did not pay full price for your phone when you entered into
your contract with Verizon. Once you pay for your obligation, your
iPhone does not know that you are paid in full with your phone
company. Verizon needs to authorize the unlocking of your phone.
Often this can be done online. Folks at a Verizon store can help too.
If Verizon employees ignore your request to unlock your off contract
phone, then you can take steps to insist Verizon allow you full access
to your fully paid property. Post if Verizon is giving you hassles
when you seek phone freedom.

Re: Getting Rid of Unwanted Groups in Message

2016-09-09 Thread Bill Gallik
Well folks, I got the problem solved but it wasn't white as straight forward as
just deleting the messages.

Here's what I had to do:
– Of course I open the Messages app
– Then, using the search facility, I did a search on the names of one of my
nieces that was in that original group message
– Then, finding the entry with all those folks in it, I selected it
– Did the swipe down to more where I found a remove button

Wallah, that did the trick!

Is this even possible? If so, which ap can I use?
I'd prefer a free ap if possible.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I apologize for the rant I just sent.

2016-09-09 Thread Dianne Phelps
Friends,

The subject line says it all. Since my accident and head injury, my
processing of numbers is greatly diminished which drives me nuts. When I
read the topic list I heard iPhone 7.47 and 7+ which I heard as 7.55. This
along with other things which are results of the above are extremely
embarrassing to me. Math was never my strong suit anyway, and now, I can no
longer remember a phone number long enough to put it into the keypad, let
alone read things with numbers properly.

Having said all that after my rant from the devil, those sizes aren't that
unacceptable, though I am not certain the size in inches of the 6 which I am
now using. Smaller, thinner and lighter pleases me just fine. I probably
won't do anything until next spring when my contract allows me to upgrade
again. This means I could opt to have a better camera for KNFB Reader
purposes and hopefully, better fit for my small hands.

Now, I'll go tuck my head under my wing and keep quiet.

Honestly, we all just need to relax over this stuff. It will all work out
best for all of us. Some people may change for a variety of reasons and
others of us will hang tough. I like far more about my iPhone now than I
dislike, and I think the larger size helped with my transition which I have
appreciated. I just need it to be a bit more comfortable to handle and less
awkward to carry.

Apple may not remain king for ever and ever, but they have definitely given
us an off the shelf chance to successfully use this technology. It's not
20/20, but I'll take what I can get that inches me as close as I can get to
20/20. I wish I had had access to some of the magnifier technology we have
today when I had my 3 to 5% limited field vision. The best we could get back
in the day were coke-bottle-bottom glasses for which I was so thankful.
Then, when I lost my partial vision, we had the optacon which put the print
under my finger and allowed me to really see punctuation.

Sending happy smiles to all,

Dianne and Hibiscus

RE: listening and charging and thoughts on the presentation

2016-09-09 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G.
It sounds to me as if one couldn't use the edge features if the device was in a
case, as a case needs to cover the edges to hold it to the device, unless, of
course, I could just totally not understand this.

I don't think it's stupid at all. Remember, I don't have an S7 Edge myself, so
I'm just going by what I've read, what I've seen on lists and what my friends
and relatives who have an S7 Edge have told me.

The curved edges give you a bit more real estate in the same form factor. The
S7 Edge for example has a 5.5 inch screen while the S7 has a
5.1 inch screen and the dimensions are basically identical.

The Edge can be used a bit easier with one hand since you can place your
favorite contacts and apps on the edges and reach them with the fingers of the
hand holding the device. You can also have information sent to the screens on
the edges, so for example, you could place your phone face down so you won't
get interrupted with vibrations or ring tones but still see messages appear on
the edges or have them change colors to indicate you have a call or a message
from someone in particular.
Samsung recently opened up the interfaces to the edges, so app developers can
now think of all sorts of ways to take advantages of the edges.

Finally, it just makes the S7 Edge look and feel cool!

I'm not sure how much a blind person can take advantage of these features, but
like I said, I'd expect an Apple implementation to be similar and accessible.
Apple will also open this up to developers down the road, if Apple takes this
path, and again you'll have innovative app developers coming up with all kinds
of things.

ever since my first iPhone, a for S. The improved sound will be
nice, but it wouldn't be compelling for me in and of itself. The
loss of the headphone jack doesn't make a difference to me
personally. So I'm going to go for an upgrade from a 6S to a seven.
I don't like the plus. It's too big. I'm actually not so sure I'm
looking forward to a new form factor. They are talking about the
curved thing like Samsung has with their edge. As I understand it,
that extra screen, the edge, isn't accessible. Now maybe Apple will
find a way to make that happen. Still, I just don't see the point.
Wireless charging, still don't care. Better screen? Again, don't
care. So all the new stuff they're talking about for next year I
guess I just don't find all that appealing. Different strokes.

Wondering if anyone else has Upgraded/preordered the iPhone 7 through AT

2016-09-09 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
My apologies if this strays from the strictest definitions of this list but
since it does directly relate to upgrading or preordering devices as well as
touching on the accessibility of an app perhaps it still fits.
I’m just curious if any other listers went through the process of upgrading a
device on their AT accounts either via their My AT app or via their site
with a screen reader?
My experience was that while most of the information both in the app and on the
web page could easily be read there were some standard type elements which for
some reason couldn’t be executed in the app or on the site using VoiceOver or a
screen reader.
Since I’m attempting to dialog with AT in an effort to hopefully improve
their accessibility specifically in this area I thought it might be helpful to
gage the experiences of others should there be any.
It was my experience for instance that in the iOS app the process of moving
through the steps went great until you reached the point at which you were to
select your color and storage capacity. Those elements appeared as a link for
instance for color but when one tried to double tap on it or any other gesture
you could imagine nothing happened. At this juncture you were good and stuck
with no way forward.
On the website interestingly the elements for color selection and storage
capacity appeared as check boxes in Internet Explorer which worked fine but
list boxes in FireFox which couldn’t be executed with any of the 3 windows
screen readers I had at my disposal. And in Internet Explorer the continue
links that advanced you through each step and its accompanying page were quite
tricky to activate and only did so with one screen reader.
If anyone had experiences that were either similar or differed from that which
I had I’d love to hear about it so as to most affectively communicate with AT
in an effort to make this upgrade area better for us all going forward. By and
large I feel AT has done a decent job concerning accessibility both in their
iOS app and on site. Here’s hoping this glitchy area can be ironed out too.
Robin

Re: My question is still how large are they going to allow these devices to become?

2016-09-09 Thread Andy Baracco
The customer base determines that. When I purchased my first cell phone in 1994
it was like a brick. Over the years they shrunk to be absolutely tiny. But as
the capability of these devices increased, there became a need to display more
content on the screen. Android users are very used to large devices. In fact,
the newest version of Android will allow you to run two apps simultaneously,
with each occupying half the screen. i thought the form factor of the iPhone 5
and 5S was perfect for me, but I adjusted to the iPhone 6, but would not want
anything larger. Personally, I wish that Apple would devote as much energy to
increasing battery life as it does to adding features that many could care less
about.

Subject: My question is still how large are they going to allow these devices

I still question why the size keeps enlarging? When I upgraded the last time, I
looked at the 6 and 6+, which, I felt was like carrying a tablet around. That
may well be important for sighted consumers, but I am tired of trying of
carrying these huge things around. I need something which fits in a pocket
without falling out or in a small purse. I need decent sound and some ability
to connect with my hearing aids. This all means I am still interested in the
SE. Having a nice camera on board would be nice for when I want to hand my
phone to someone to take a picture, though since my sister and sister-in-law
are the shutter bug historians for our family, it is not totally necessary for
me.

With the sizes as they now are, I may as well pack my Surface around.

I like a great deal of what Apple has done with this product and for their
attention to our needs with Voiceover and commend them for these products. I
need Siri to become more accurate, though, it has improved immensely from its
beginning and anticipate continued improvement. The camera concerns me only in
as much as I depend upon KNFB reader, and the best quality of camera we can
have may be important to its performance. I figure the SE may be better than
the camera on the 6.

Lastly, I think the reason the size of the 6 also bothers me is, because I have
small hands, and I find the larger size harder to hold at times, especially
when using the KNFB Reader. I find it difficult to both hold the iPhone and
double tap to take the picture.

Ok, I am off my cantankerous soap box now. Just my thoughts since for me
earphone jack or not isn’t the largest issue.

Relax and enjoy the weekend. As my great grandmother used to say, it will all
come out in the “worsh”. She was Irish and wash came out sounding like worsh.

Smiling,

Re: My question is still how large are they going to allow these devices to become?

2016-09-09 Thread Kelly Pierce
The iPhone SE is at a much lower price point than the regular size
model. Before Apple offers a lower priced version of the iPhone 7
functionality with a smaller handset, it will offer the bigger size
phones for those who want the latest technology. while small phones
will continue to have a following, most people like bigger phones and
Apple makes more money with them. It is likely Apple will update the
four inch size phone at some point.

Re: listening and charging and thoughts on the presentation

2016-09-09 Thread Christopher Chaltain
There are cases for the S7 Edge. The ones I've seen are pretty low
profile. They basically cover the back and wrap up over the top and the
bottom, leaving the sides clear. They also have screen protectors, but
I've heard they're pretty tricky to get installed and wrap around the edges.

I don't use cases myself, so I don't research this issue much, but like
I said I have relations and friends who have cases on their S7 Edges.
There could also be cases for the S7 Edge that I haven't seen, but I'm
sure a web search will lead you or anyone else to more information.

It sounds to me as if one couldn't use the edge features if the device was in a

course, I could just totally not understand this.

Apple will also open this up to developers down the road, if Apple takes this
path, and again you'll have innovative app developers coming up with all kinds
of things.

Christopher, can I ask a very stupid question? What is the difference
between the run-of-the-mill Android and the Edge? Obviously it has to
do with the edges of the phone, but what and what does it do? Thanks.

I've read on different Android lists both that the edges of the S7
Edge are accessible and that they're not. The difference seems to be
that people who state they're accessible tend to actually have an S7
Edge, whereas those who say they aren't accessible don't and are just
repeating what they've heard. Therefore, I tend to think the edges are
accessible, but I don't have an S7 Edge myself. Either way, if an
iPhone were to have edges then I'm sure Apple would make them
accessible with VoiceOver. That doesn't mean that they'll turn out to
be particularly useful for a blind person, or a sighted person either.

Well that's interesting, since I have read on the android list that
the edge part is absolutely not accessible. I don't own one, so I'm
only basing my statement on what I heard from others who supposedly do.

Hi Sieghard,
I think the extra battery life, especially in the 6S versus the
seven, it's kind of compelling. That might be enough to let me not
use a battery case, which I find I have to do and have had to do
ever since my first iPhone, a for S.
Again, don't
care. So all
