[Zope] ZCatalog : Searching Multiple Indexes : Returning One Result

2008-07-07 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff
Hi, I have a catalog called catalog that contains a bunch of cataloged
items. I have indexed 3 properties for each item, name, body and
description. I'd like to be able to search the catalog in the following
way:

if the word text shows up in any index, name, body or description,
return that result back once.

The problem is I have is that if a do a search for text and say there's
results that have the word text in one or more of those indexes:

catalog({name:query}) or catalog({body:query}) or
catalog({description:query})
only gives back limited results (leaves out some 'True' hits) and:
catalog({name:query}) + catalog({body:query}) + catalog({description:query})
gives me back the same result 3 times.

any ideas? Thanks.

Highly recommend Google Analytics:
http://www.google.com/analytics/
I've used it myself to track usage for a zope intranet which is only
accessible on an internal network.

 Hi there,

now I wonder how meningfull such statisics are.

The intranet usage is roughly as follows:
 - user logs into the intranet authenticating against a
 Ldap/MSActiveDirectory
 - she stays in the intranet all day, probably never logs out
 - collects data as needed

The awstats setup is very basic. I just installed it and adopted the config
files such that it finds the apache log files.
I did a second setup for the Z2.log (to get at the old data, as we do not
 rotate the Z2.log).

Looking at the awstats statistics I do not find them of overwhelming
 informative.
Now, I now awstats is not a click analysis tool. but maybe somebody has done
some more analysis into how to provide useful statistics on the usage of an
 intranet.
 Any pointers would be welcome.

Re: [Zope] Conditional dtml-boundary in dtml-sendmail

The email library should be available to use with a Script (Python) and can
be done all within the ZMI. Otherwise maybe use dtml-try?

This is my dtml-method to send email after having submitted the
 data:

 dtml-let email=REQUEST.get('aba_email_txt').encode('utf-8')
  name=REQUEST.get('aau_name_txt').encode('utf-8')
  lastName=REQUEST.get('aat_vorname_txt').encode('utf-8')
  company=REQUEST.get('aas_firma_txt').encode('utf-8')
  file1=REQUEST.get('aap_dateien_anhang_dat')
  file2=REQUEST.get('aaq_dateien_anhang_dat')
  file3=REQUEST.get('aar_dateien_anhang_dat')

 dtml-sendmail smtphost=my_host.my_domain.com
 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 From: dtml-email;
 Subject: Anfrage dtml-name; dtml-lastName; - dtml-company;
 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
 dtml-mime type=text/html; charset=utf-8
 html
  body
Some html code comes here
  /body
 /html
 dtml-boundary type=application/octet-stream disposition=attachment
   filename_expr=file1.filename
 dtml-var file1.read()dtml-boundary type=application/octet-stream
 disposition=attachment
   filename_expr=file2.filename
 dtml-var file2.read()dtml-boundary type=application/octet-stream
 disposition=attachment
   filename_expr=file3.filename
 dtml-var file3.read()/dtml-mime
 /dtml-sendmail
 /dtml-let

Let's say that the user doesn't submit file3, on that case, zope will
generate something like this: some_ramdom_id.dat and it will attach
an empty file. I tried something like this:

 dtml-if file1.filename not in ['', None]dtml-boundary
  type=application/octet-stream disposition=attachment
  filename_expr=file1.filename
 dtml-var file1.read()/dtml-if

However when I try to save, zope fails and says:

Error Type: Document Template Parse Error
Error Value: Unexpected tag, for tag dtml-boundary
 type=application/octet-stream disposition=attachment
 filename_expr=file1.filename , on line 215 of sendAnfrage

The only way I found to cope with this was doing a script to validate if a
file has whether a name or not, then I will return a dictionary like this:
 {'name': real_name_or_dummy_name, 'data': file.read()_or_dummy_text}

So, I feed the boundary with a dummy file when no file was uploaded. I
 don't
really like to send dummy files since it may confuse the person receiving
the emails. Is there any better way of achieving this? Please note that
since I'm working in the zmi and I'm not the administrator of the machine
where my page is hosted, I can only use dtml to send mail :-(, thus using
the python mail library isn't an option on this case.

 Best regards
 Josef

The aspects of this page that I like are:

1. It is not frame based

2. The left column shows a list of functions in the same category

3. The left column allows one to move up the function tree (i.e.
^Filesystem function, ^Function Reference, etc.)

4. There is static documentation for every function (Description,
Parameters, Return Values, etc. - I'm sure zope could handle this
part)

5. Users are allowed to comment on the functions

Assuming that Zope can do this, how difficult would it be? Can I get
some pointers into the Zope documentation for how to accomplish
this? Is it worth starting with something like Plone instead of with
'raw' zope?

Thank you.

Re: [Zope] Plone middle aligns all colums

If you've introduced tables into the overall layout tds will not align
the content to the top by default. You'd need to add td {vertical-
align: top} to your css. I doubt the problem has to do with a setting
in Plone or Zope. It would be easier to trouble shoot this if there
were a link to the page in question.

We can sort of fix this by manually adding vertical-align: top; in

Since it’s not on the production site, it’s not a life and death

There's nothing wrong with the ZMI. You're just try to hack into some
kind of cms rather than just build one. Hiding a link with css is
nasty hack and major security issue. While it may seem like what
you're doing is an easy path to a quick cms, you're really just
setting yourself up for a management nightmare. I'd recommend reading
through (all of) this:

My thinking is that the zmi is battle tested. I'd rather use something

displayed

to a user in the folder view of the zmi?

Thanks,

IFRames. You should avoid those. With ajax or similar its easy to
skip
such stuff and just replace any named container tag.

Iframes are still a valid choice in case asynchronous won't work

you need to load resources from servers != your origin server. Due
the

ugly as you said, but sometimes a good workaround.

Basically you look at the clients ip address (from the REQUEST
object)
and perform any action you need (redirections, conditions within
scripts,
templates)...but no idea what the sense of this usecase is. If you
have

different audiences, setup sites with different content or something
similar. In addition: using Zope behind proxy will lead in request
coming

from the IP address of your reverse proxy. Additional
configuration/programming is necessary to get hold of the original
IP.

Thanks for the reply.

The use case is that my client wants to block a range of IP addresses
from being able to view their site. So I need to access the
originating IP address and filter appropriately.

I've written a few custom zope products before, but I've not done
anything that really modifies zope's behaviour on every request - just
on requests for the specific objects I'm publishing. So I'm familiar
with the request object, but I don't know how to intercept *every*
request. Are there any global request life-cycle hooks? If you can
point me to those that would be a great help.

Cheers,
David

If you just need to redirect traffic from an IP range, and not do
anything fancy, it may be better to do it in Apache rather than Zope.

I didn’t really want to copy/paste every single file into a dtml

You can ftp the files to a static directory on the file system and

Re: [Zope] Frustrated with Python and Frameworks. Zope, Grok, Django, CherryPy

2007-11-27 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff

Zope2 + DTML + Python and you're good to go. I know a bunch of
developers/designers, including myself that use this combo all the
time. I currently use it for projects at a Fortune 500 company. The
docs suck but once you get in the groove you can bang out solid,
stable, good looking, standard compliant sites unbelievably fast.
Acquisition can be your best friend and you reuse a lot of your coding
for multiple projects. There are still developers on this list who use
DTML over ZPT, they just dont post much to it because of the ZPT
backlash you get when you do. I've gotten private messages off this
list from people though about DTML so there is support out there. Its
true that most of the products for Zope 2 have been updated in a while
but I can tell you that most will work fine with the latest Zope 2
release and are very customizable. The Zope2 ecosystem is pretty
mature and stable just poorly documented or supported. I do think
you'll probably get the Zope Zen quicker than you think and be able
to figure out a lot on your own.

I'm frustrated trying to select a python web framework. I’ve
researched quite a
few. CherryPy,Karrigell,Zope 2,3,Grok, Gluon,Django,Mod_Python. I’ve
also

looked at templating languages like Spyce, and Cheetah.
I’m beginning to think there’s nothing out there for a newbie python
programmer like myself. I’m a Network Admin that likes programming
but

doesn’t have the time to get really proficient at it.
I selected Python as a language of choice and that’s all I’ve used.
I’ve

written a few scripts .
I’m interested in building dynamic web sites but I tell you it’s
impossible to

select a tool.
I’ve researched all the tools mentioned above. The most important
thing in my
decision is that I know some Python and want to use it to build the
dynamic
site. I don’t want to learn a new language to do that. ZPT is a new
language.
Its not python. Not even close. Out of all the ones I’ve
researched I like
Zope 2 the best. Not sure why. I want some thing easy. I like
DTML. It’s
easy. I know why ZPT has it’s advantages but for ease of use it
doesn’t come
close to DTML. Most people like me wont be building complex web
sites and I’d
be the only working on it meaning I’ll do the HTML layout and code
the dynamic
portions of it. So I don’t’ need to worry about an HTML editor
getting

confused with the dynamic languages mixed in blah blah blah.

I’m afraid to learn Zope 2 because I have no idea what direction
it’s going in.
Not to mention I don’t particularly like ZPT. I’ve read DTML isn’t
going
anywhere but I don’t imagine I’ll get much support on it when
needed and I’m

sure people will be telling me to use ZPT cause DTML is dead.
Funny, I read something while reading news about Grok’s new plugins
for any
template language . They used Genshi as an example and talked about
template
languages and which one is better etc.. The bottom line was use the
one that
you like. So I wish people would stop putting down DTML or others
over the
one they prefer and continue to help those regardless of which they
choose.
Back to trying to choose. I think Django is too hard. I like
Mod_python with
PSP. PSP seems to be more python like then anything I’ve seen. Yet
Mod_Python

has terrible docs for people like me and it doesn't seem to popular.
The other frameworks have some good ideas. I like Karrigell but you
just don’t
know how long it will be supported.Gluon is cool but its new. Zope
3 is out of
the question. Grok looks to me like another CherryPy. It may be
easier the
Zope 3 but it’s not easier then Zope 2. Plus I’ve yet to get it
installed on my

windows XP to play.
I like cheetah as a tool. There docs are not that great and not many
examples.
Plus no auto generated content like you get in Zope 2. Yes some
magic is
good. The CRUD is what made Rails over rated to start out
with.People like some
magic. saves time. Combining Cheetah and Zope sounds interesting to
me.
So what do I do. I like Zope 2. I can’t find any books on it
released after

2002. Plone is tooo much.
There aren’t any new products out for Zope 2 and the ones that are
there

haven’t been touched for years.
Zope 2 wiki seems dead. I was looking the other day for some type
of auto
CRUD for Zope 2. couldn’t find anyting. No one seems to be adding
anything new

to Zope 2 which scares me the most.
If I take the time to learn a tool I want to make sure it’s going to
be around
for awhile and have good support and new addons being added all of
the time to

help me.

If you're uploading a file you'll want to also add enctype=multipart/
form-data to the form tag. I usually add it by default.

http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/interact/forms.html#h-17.13.4
The content type application/x-www-form-urlencoded is inefficient
for sending large quantities of binary data or text containing non-
ASCII characters. The content type multipart/form-data should be
used for submitting forms that contain files, non-ASCII data, and
binary data.

I've used Automator to create an app that I have as a startup item

In Automator choose Automator under Library and then Run Shell

it to your startup items.

And the startup script:

Anyone out there have a successful StartupItem script that I could

[Zope] RSS to HTML in Zope

2007-06-18 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff
Hi, Im still struggling to get an RSS feed converted to HTML in Zope
using

Universal Feed Parser
http://www.feedparser.org/
+
This feedpaser setup
http://www.zope.org/Members/johntynan/feedparser

I'm able to get an RSS feed converted to what looks like a dictionary
and view it, however it shows up as a rendered string on the page.
Whenever I try to get any of the keys, no matter how, I've tried
every possible scenario, I get an error back every time. Blah Blah
is not callable..., You care not allowed to access blah Blah in
this context., Value 0, etc...

I've also tried using the RSS Document in the XML Kit which ended up
causing a runaway python method and took down Zope so I'd like to
avoid using it. Half the time it gives back an error message anyway.

If anyone has a relatively easy way to convert an RSS feed to HTML in
Zope I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how to set this up.
Thanks in advance.

[Zope] Dictionary Key Error from Parsed RSS

2007-06-15 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff
Hi everyone, I've used Universal Feed Parser to parse an RSS feed.
Then used these instructions below to get the parsed data into Zope
via an External Method. Everything seems to work fine except that I
keep getting an error whenever I try to access a key from the
returned data. The resulting data is returned as a dictionary and if
I render it as is it works fine, however in both ZPT and DTML, when
trying to access a key, for instance feed or href from the
dictionary I'm prompted to login, which I'm unable to do with my
admin login. After hitting cancel I get a Key Error that says You are
not able to access 'href' (or whatever) in this context. Is there any
way to somehow let Zope know that this data is 'ok'? Thanks in advance.

Pre-requisites
==

- Zope 2.5.x (developed and tested with Zope 2.5.1, but other minor
versions should work as well)

- feedparser.py 3.0 (http://diveintomark.org/projects/feed_parser/)
developed and tested with 3.0 beta 22, the latest version

Installation

1. Installing feedparser.py
---

1.1. Unzip the archive (preserving path names) into /Zopesite/bin/lib/

1.2. open a command prompt window and go to /Zopesite/bin/lib/
feedparser/

1.3. enter the command (sans quotes): '..\..\python setup.py install'

1.4. after installation, enter the command: '..\..\python
feedparsertest.py'

1.5. wait for testing to complete. On my laptop, 2051 tests ran in
118.481s

2. Installing the external method
-

2.1 place the newsfeed.py module in the /Zopesite/Extensions/ directory
2.2 Add an external method to your zope site with an id and Module of
'newsfeed', and a function of 'parsefeed'

3. Installing the feed template
---

3.1 Add a Page template to your Zope site with the contents of the
nprnews.pt Page Template

3.2 examine the generic template rendering of NPR News, all fields
from the feed should be available.

Likely because the module has no security assertions. All your

under the conditions of Restricted Python. The standard Zope

im aware. humor me. :)

The zCatalog has indexes and metadata:
business_name

The object does get cataloged with the newid but none of the

Hard to believe...do you have properties defined for the particular

Yes. same names as whats listed above.

[Zope] adding objects to a ZCatalog

2007-02-23 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff

Hi,

I have a folder called images and a form that to add images to that
folder. The form called an external method (../images/addImage) that
references a python script, the one I sent earlier, that creates 4
versions of the images in 4 sizes and places them in the images
folder. Also in the images folder I have a ZCatalog called
ImageData. I'm trying to add a line to the python script to
automatically catalog any images that are added to the images folder.
I tried ImageData.manage_catalogObject... but I kept getting back:
NameError: global name 'ImageData' is not defined. Any advice? Thanks.

I think your line numbers are off by one, because I'd think it is
the getattr that would be causing the Attribute Error (at most,
line 9 could give an attribute error for something called data.

Zope turns file upload objects into
ZPublisher.HTTPRequest.FileUpload instances. and pass them to your
method. FileUpload instances have an interface similar to python
file objects, you can .read(), .seek(), .close() or do whatever you
want to them and might not need to wrap the contents into a
StringIO object first. (your trying to fetch the file as an
attribute of self seems to imply that you think the form data is
already uploaded into zope and is an Image object in a folder. It
isn't there yet, and won't be unless you store it there.)

I think if you removed lines 8 and 9 (by your numbering) and
renamed the second argument to the method to original_file,
things would work as you need:

1 def makeImages(self, original_file):
2
3import PIL.Image
4import PIL
5import os.path
6
...

[Zope] Zope on Mac OS X Server

2006-11-17 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff
Hi I'm having trouble setting redirecting port 80 to port 8080 on Mac OS
X Server 10.4. I installed Zope via the Plone installer and have a an
Instance running in the Applications folder. I can access the ZMI on
port 8080 via the machines IP address, but I can't seem to get the
Apache rewrite rule to work as shown in the various documentation. I'm
curious if anyone has done this before and/or has used OS X Server's
Server Admin tool to create an alias or redirect from port 80 to 8080.
Thanks in advance.

Chris - I have several thoughts on that which I wanted to air -

I took some time to get used to the new skin. I like it a lot -
great work Kevin (and Tom).

(In fact I'd like to include a generic version in Zwiki as a wiki
template - are the authors ok with this ? I will make it as
different as you think necessary to avoid confusion with the zope
wikis.)

fine with me. :)

I'm also quite fond of the basic Zwiki skin, which is adapted to my
needs. For jumping around between many wikis, many pages, and doing
serious wiki gardening, I find it less distracting, also the page
hierarchy is clearer. For some people it will also be faster. So I
wanted to leave it in place for at least a few days to give people
a chance to see how it works for browsing these wikis.

I also like that big Zope planet floating in the background of the
zope2 wiki. The sense of wide-open spaciousness. And I like that
it's visually distinct from the zope3 wiki, so you know at a glance
where you are.

I have been guessing the consensus will be to use the new skin
across all the wikis, though. But I think we definitely need some
way to differentiate them.

I'll see if I can come up with something.

Just now, motivated by Martijn's talk at DZUG (recommended!) I
started to move the templates from /zope3 up to the root folder,
then I realized the skin has zope3 wiki stuff hard-coded. So some
more work is needed before the skin can be reused. Kevin, I wonder
what your thoughts/plans are (feel free to try them out).

Im noticing that the pages of the Foundation website are pages within
pages. Meaning entire pages including the doctype, body and head tags
were pasted within the site wrapper. These secondary doctype body and
head tags should be removed.

2006-09-04 Thread Tom Von Lahndorff

semi-stretchable

Would be nice if IE supported min-width and max-width in css. It
doesn't. The only way I've seen anyone get that to work in IE is with
some nasty javascript hack. We can keep going down this road though,
fine with me. We'll be here for literally weeks and months going
through all of the pros and cons of fixed vs. fluid layouts that have
been debated for years. There is no right answer.

p.s. Lennart, 1600 wide? Are you serious? Regardless of monitor size,
do you actually leave your browser window open to that size? In all
the stats I've seen 1600 represents 0% to 1% of users and I'd imagine
most sites look like shit at that size (in the rare case, I'd
imagine, that the user has the browser set to full screen).

p.p.s. I will be working on the Linux rendering issues which is
actually a good example of the real challenges with web design.
Getting a standards based site to look good on IE an Firefox on a PC
is a (nightmarish at times) challenge alone (mostly thanks to IE's
lack of standards support). Getting it to work on every browser on
every OS and look good is a boatload of work. My focus is to do just
that while keeping the html and css *clean* and free of hacks and
javascript as much as possible. Also, keeping the html reusable to
easily implement future design changes and as maintenance free as
possible.

p.p.p.s. Jens hit the nail on the head. Believe it or not, but 800 x
600 still represents ~20% of users and I'd rather not have them have
to scroll horizontally to get to content. Thats *way* worse than
having extra space on the sides.

Really, guys, what all of this boils down to is that with all of the
various browsers, OSs, screen resolutions, javascript support etc.
there can be no one size fits them all answer. Designing a good site
is about getting to work as well as possible for the majority of
users, but at the end of the day, no matter what, some users are not
going to like it. It annoys me that digg.com is fixed for 1024
because when I have my bookmarks sidebar open in Firefox I have to
scroll horizontally or close my bookmarks. Great site though and I go
to it every day. It bugs me that cnn.com has inconsistent navigation
throughout the site. I go to cnn.com for news all the time. Although
these features annoy me I'm sure they have valid reasons for doing
them and they don't prevent me from using the site.

Right now the biggest problem that Zope, zope.org as well as other
zope products/properties suffers from is useability and marketing.
The least of any problems is what color the sites are, whether the
pages are fluid or fixed width or whatever. The real problem is that
no knows what Zope is, how it works or how to use the sites. I've
been using Zope and zope.org for like 7 or 8 years now and you know
what, I have no clue how to add content to my page on zope.org and to
upload any of the interesting products or skins Ive created. Thats a
problem when people within the community can't figure stuff out,
forget newcomers. Zope is better than PHP or Ruby on Rails but is
getting it's a$$ kicked every single day by them because of just this
kind of stuff. At this point it's a game of catch up for Zope and for
any of these projects to get stalled because a website looks like
shit on a 1600 pixel wide monitor is just insane.

Lets get past these basic design issues, get a test site up and
running and start getting our hands dirty. Lets implement the html
and css and then get down to brass tacks and start the *real* work of
editorializing the content so that it's understandable to newcomers
as well as veterans, making content easily accessible and clearly
labeled, providing easy to use interfaces and functionality. Keep
this in mind too, that a many times a decision as to whether or not
to use Zope for a particular project, *cough* *especially for large
scale projects* *cough* (trust me, I know), will be greatly
influenced by some non-technical people. If they can't go to a site
and at least get a basic idea of the strengths of the product and
feel comfortable with the marketing of that product they'll forget
about it in 2 seconds. Its the details of this site that are much
more important at the end of the day than how wide the margins of the
page are.

* Changed the layout from fixed to fluid. Right column expands
and contracts based on browser window size. This means that any right
column content must be fluid as well and work in various browser
window sizes. For instance, ample space will need to be given to any
floated images within text areas to prevent overlapping on larger
browser windows.

* Fixed overlapping nav text bug in Firefox/Linux.
* Updated the logo in the upper left to be include the Zope logo
and font (now image based).

* Tested in Firefox/Mac, Opera/Mac, Safari/Mac, Firefox/Linux.

Zope Foundation
Design 1, Version 1

* Try the nav.
* Updated the colors of the nav to make it stand out more.
* Added the extras box to the top right hand side of the main
column.

* Not going to make a fluid layout because:
o Trading in having the space on the sides for less

o The simple nature of the site means a thinner page is
more appropriate. Most of the content will be text that is easier to
read the less wide the page is. This is not some multi column news
site that has multiple content boxes.

* Not going to add a top navigation because:
o Its inconsistent. The navigation should be in one place.
period. I find Plone to be confusing and annoying in it's use of
seperate nav areas. 2 Navs will cause confusion on the front and back
end of things. Im sticking with a standard left hand navigation based
on an unordered list that will make sense normally, without a
stylesheet, on text readers, mobile browsers...

Looks nice. Some comments:

* I get text flowing into each other in the sidebar. About The
Foundation overlaps whatever is on the next line, with the word
Foundation on the next line. There's another such instance lower
down, where it says Foundation..Projects? (can't read).

This is on firefox 1.5 on linux.

Here's my feedback. Some of it is echoing Chris' feedback except I
am being more constructive about it. Please don't give up! My main
aim is to try to get some aspects of what I liked in version 3,
which I think is good for a homepage design, into the sub-page design.

* I think it would be nicer with the margins somewhat smaller. I
also liked version 3's smaller marging and background color. You
changed the texture here but with a small marging I like the other.

* It would be nice to have optional sidebar boxes on the right,
like they are in design 3. Could you create a page with such a box
in it?

* I think a list of links on the top, layouted much like the menu
in version 3, but without dropdowns, would be useful to have. We
could use it to navigate between major sections on a site.

* I'm wondering whether we can do something slightly more exciting
with the colors of the navigation sidebar on the left. I liked the
use of blue in version 3, but now the blue has mostly gone into the
margins. More functional blue, perhaps?

Sorry Chris, I didnt mean to harsh on you. That was meant in fun as
much as it is in truth.

I dont mind any negative feedback, but what Im looking for more like:

- What content do we need and where should it go.
- Suggestions for better functionality (like the title bars of a
table should be clickable to rank items by that criteria).

- This page blows up in my browser or the nav doesnt work.
- Suggestions for homepage content (News and updates RSS Feeds,
Testmonials...).

- Editing of text if some information is too wordy or confusing.
- Site structure and content boxes, wireframes.

Im trying to avoid things like:

- I dont like that color. (Unless its really nasty this is 100%
subjective)
- Fixed width vs. Fluid layouts. (This debate has been around since
tables. We need to just pick one. For every person that doesnt like
the space on the side of the page with fixed width there will be
another person who doesnt like the extra white space at the bottom of
every page on fluid width layout)
- Anything thats really subjective issue that can be debated ad
infinitum.

Im trying to avoid design by committee. Ive worked on like hundreds
of TV and Radio websites and basically they all look a$$. This is
because everyone from the morning show host to the general manager to
the salespeople all b!tch and moan until they get what they want and
the end product is hideous frankensite. I dont think that would
happen here but I want put down the hammer anywhere I see it start to
creep in.

The big difference here as well is that the site will be built on
Zope! This means was can all tweak it to our hearts content because
it's built smart, on a flexible and scalable backend. Instead of
trying to get something *great* out of the box, lets get up a *good*
site and go from there and make it great. Lets get it up and running
and functioning and focus on the content wrapped a good and nice
design and go from there...

I want to keep momentum on this.

Hi there,

It's nearing september, and I'd like to start some work on
zope.org, in particular www.zope.org/foundation. I'm looking for
volunteers to help.

As you all probably know, we have a Zope Foundation, of which I'm a
board member (representative for the committer members). Aroldo
Souza-Leite is also on the board as chairman.

Aroldo and I are the board members responsible for the zope.org
website committee. The task of the zope.org committee is to improve
the zope.org web presence. Aroldo and I won't be doing the work or
decision making alone, but since we have the backing of the
foundation, we can make decisions stick. Volunteers are welcome to
join this committee!

One of the first tasks at hand is to improve the presence of the
Zope Foundation on the web. We currently have a section here:

http://www.zope.org/foundation

This website doesn't look very pretty at all. My proposal is to
reorganize it, have some introductory text, put in links to
relevant information resources, such as mailing lists (including
this one), and to stick a nice layout around it.

This project will serve two purposes:

* to create a nice website for the foundation.

* serve as an example and test case for the wider zope.org renewal
project.

So, please help us out.

Layout
--

I propose we use Tom Von Lahndorff's design for the foundation
website. For the purposes of the foundation site we should strip it
down:

* no login necessary

* no search (unless we integrate google-based search, perhaps)

* possibly no drop-down menus at the top. We could simply have
links there, or possibly a standard left-hand side navigation. This
design is the top page; we need to see a sub-page design as well.

Tom, are you still there? This time we're going to use what you
made quickly, if you're willing!

Structure and text
--

Aroldo and I (Aroldo, I'm volunteering you :) are willing to work
on a bunch of restructured text documents that introduce the zope
foundation and set up the site structure.

Technology
--

I've said this before, and I'll just repeat it again: let's try to
avoid technology discussions as much as we can. Most of us,
including myself, are techies, so it's attractive to do this, but
we just want to put a website up. This doesn't require any new
technology, nor does it require a heavy-duty CMS.

To break my own rule on no technology discussions right way:

I propose letting www.zope.org/foundation point to a Apache
directory, where we maintain HTML files. We will then generate such
HTML files from restructured text we maintain in the zope SVN
repository, using a simple script that drives docutils.

If you want examples of websites that are managed this way and I
have personal experience with, check out the following places on
codespeak:

http://codespeak.net/z3/

http://codespeak.net/lxml/

Since we're not aiming for a big site, this should be sufficient
technology.

For the larger zope.org, we may need something else, or we may not.
Let's treat the foundation website as a trial case here too, and
see how we like it.

There's one alternative to this approach that will also work on the
short term: a volunteer that's willing to work with zope.org and
integrate the layout and text and structure we want into existing
zope.org infrastructure. If someone volunteers to work on this, I'd
be happy to do it that way as well. Does anyone volunteer?

Any other technological approaches require more setup and I'd like
to defer them for the time being. We can take them up when we
tackle zope.org proper.

I hope we can all have this together in a couple of weeks, so let's
start working!

Martijn

See Mike D.'s comments on that article which pretty much sums up my

Still not convinced, but that's just me. We don't have such a deep
structure or information density, I would simply put a context navigation
on the left (or right) for each section but not on the homepage, like on
this two pages:

http://www.mozilla.org/support/
http://www.mozilla.org/about/

Very simple.

Not really. Just the opposite actually, confusing. My design is certainly
more simple than mozilla's. Inconsistent page layout. I like sites that
have a consistent layout throughout, including the homepage. It's confusing
when the navigation changes on a page by page basis. In my case there's no
scheme that the user has to *get*.

03/22/06. Updated the homepage. Added the Zope 3 box. Created a
download page. Click on Download Zope under Download in the nav.

Thanks for all of the comments. Keep 'em coming. A couple of people
had mentioned the background was a bit dark so I've lightened it. It
seems though that people are pretty happy with the general look and
feel of the layout. I'd like to start drilling down into content at
this point and this where I'll really need people's feedback,
especially editorially. I want to try and keep the content simple and
not make the assumption that visitors know what Zope is and what it
does.

I was also thinking that there should be a discussion board on the
site like Apple's support boards. Many of the support questions
answered on Apple's boards are from other customers. It's a nice one
stop shop for questions and answers for those who may not want to
subscribe to mailing list. It would be nice to have that option.

Re: [ZWeb] Version 3

About printing. The CSS for printable pages has not been added yet. The
pages will be printer freindly (inluding menus).

I have bigger questions though.

1. Does the page print well?

Dunno, a print css would solve this easily.

2. Is the site to represent -both- Zope2 and Zope3, or just Zope3?
Wit mentions of Plone, CMF and Zope Products on the drop-down menus,
it seems to be targeted at Zope2.

It has always been in my scope of trying to direct this to focus on Zope
the technology, not a specific zope version.

3. On those drop-down menus, lose the constant prefix Zope. For
example, under Business, we don't need Zope Training, just
Training.

Drop down menus are placeholders - there is actually structre in svn we
are going to be using on the live site.

4. Re the copyright at the bottom - shouldn't that be Zope Foundation
instead?\

There is no Zope Foundation yet. Suppose it likely should be when it is
formed.

5. I like the drop-down menus, although they won't print.

Do we care? Can this be handled in css?
