Re: [slim] Ballroom Music on LMS
The Simple Library Views plugin might help with your Ballroom 'sub-library'. My partner's musical taste is rather different to mine (some uncharitable people say I have no taste!), and this plugin allows me to identify the music she likes and makes a subset library view. Re: [slim] MS to end Windows 10 support
Well I have a Windows 10 laptop provided by work while I'm working from home, and of course a Windows 10 desktop PC in my still unused office. I wouldn't choose to use Windows other than for work. But I think I read somewhere this issue of moving on from Windows 10 may mostly be to do with profitability of their Windows division, perhaps if there's a Windows 11 produced, it induces a round of PC purchases with a tithe of the price going to Microsoft? Also Apple went from OSX to MacOS10 and then MacOS11 now, so maybe they see a precedent. I run LMS on a Raspberry Pi - I've never installed it on a Mac or PC, partly because I see issues periodically with system updates. Prior to the Pi I was running it on a QNAP NAS, but that became problematic. I don't think users would find an iPad a good replacement for a PC. Re: [slim] RasPI with Display compared to iPad
I've put together a number of Raspberry Pi devices, and for my use at least, I prefer players with no screen and as few flashing lights as possible. I control my players via Material on a laptop, a tablet or a phone. Usually I have my MacBook open and running so in many ways it's more convenient than walking across the room to the SBT or a Raspberry Pi device. In my office, which I've not worked in for nearly a year now, I have a Raspberry Pi with dac and amplifier cards, and which has a 7" touch screen pretty much for the reasons Michael gives in the post above. Re: [slim] New Music on LMS compared to ozher systems like (air)(sub)sonic
I've never used ReplayGain - never felt the need! As to the OP's question, I've occasionally used the Linux touch command to reset the file date after I've edited tags, so that the edited files don't appear in New Music. It's a bit of a faff though. I use Kid3 for tagging, and it does have an option to preserve file time stamp. I guess that must be a widespread in file tagger apps. I like vinyl because of the aesthetic quality of the product, especially the artwork of the sleeve. And the fact that there's some care required to listen to them. Nowadays most LPs come with a download anyway. And I like the rigmarole around playing the records! Probably my views are coloured by the fact that I grew up with vinyl as the best format. When I digitised all my LPs, I found I could remember the circumstances around their purchase in just about every case. Now, some of this reflects my age and interests at the time, but it also reflects an engagement with the format that I never had with CDs. Most music I buy is as a download, the most common physical format I buy is LP - I very rarely buy CDs these days. I have tried hi-res, but cannot perceive a difference over red book CD resolution. And for the subject of this thread, I doubt I would go for Spotify Lossless streaming over the current format. Re: [slim] Standalone players - non-Logitech?
In my opinion, the biggest hurdle is finding suitable devices with the correct form factor - such as the Booms you have or the Radios I use. Fitting a DAC to a Raspberry Pi is trivial, rather more of an issue is sorting out a case for the assembled unit, plus as you say there's a need for a connection to speakers. One could make a set of smart speakers using Raspberry Pi Zero, or maybe the (probably technically more demanding) SqueezeAmp devices. Or one could use an old tablet - I have an old iPad3 that works quite well if connected to the DAC in my HiFi. Re: [slim] Seeking advice on multi-room systems for non-techies
We seem to have deviated from the main thread somewhat! I found myself wondering if the OP's friends, who don't seem to have a HiFi if I remember correctly, may not have a music collection in any formats. In which case a multiroom system aimed at streaming from Spotify or similar and internet radio might be the easiest setup for them to use. And then there may be less complex solutions than LMS. Maybe Volumio or Sonos? Robert PS I think there is a Chris and Cosey LP which finishes with an exhortation to turn over and play the other side. There's also the annoyance of lock grooves on some LPs. One LP in my collection even has a lock groove in the middle of one side, necessitating getting up and manually advancing the stylus! *Home: *Raspberry Pi 3/piCoreplayer/LMS8.0.0/Material with files on QNAP TS-251A Touch > DacMagic 100 > Naim Audio Nait 3 > Mission 752 (plus Rega Planar 3 > Rega Fono Mini; Naim CD3) 2 x Squeezebox Radios, 1 X Squeezebox 3 (retired), spare Pi2/piCorePlayer *Office:* LMS8.0.0 running on Raspberry Pi3; Raspberry Pi 3 player with touchscreen/piCorePlayer/IQaudIO DAC and Amp SqueezePad, iPeng as controllers last.fm/user/GrumpyBob Grumpy Bob's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41857 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=112330 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I believe that when 45rpm records were launched after WW2, they were marketed as an album, to be played as a stack on an autochanger record player. That ended up less popular than 33rpm LPs, and 45s ended up playing a different but important role in popular music. Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS
I don't use Plex, just LMS, and I run it on a Raspberry Pi running LMS on piCoreplayer. Files are on a NAS. Both the NAS and Pi are wired connections to the router, all players are attached via wifi. This has been running with no real interruptions for a few years, and I leave the NAS and Pi on 24/7. As I say, I can't comment on video streaming, but for LMS, this has worked well for me. Re: [slim] PiCore LMS - Thoughts on Library Location(s), Management, Backup?
My piCorePlayer running LMS has a wired connection to the router. The files are held on a QNAP NAS which is also wired to the router. I have a 2 Tb WD Hard Drive connected to the NAS by USB and which backs up the files at midnight daily. I manually back up to another WD drive roughly monthly and keep that in my office at work. I make another backup to a WD WiFi drive that also has LMS installed. So, rather than being a backup, it's really a second copy that I use in my office. The NAS and Pi run 24/7. What's quite interesting in news reports about the demise of CDs is that they are no longer regarded as 'digital'. Re: [slim] The Automation of Selling Out
I find the role of Spotify (and other streaming services) quite interesting in a generational sort of way. I grew up in an era when finding music could be quite a challenge, particularly when one was interested in rather 'alternative' genres. I do have a premium Spotify subscription, but I use it to listen to music before buying a copy (either physical or download). I don't use Spotify produced playlists. I don't expect to have a Spotify subscription for ever - either the service will change or go under in some way. Spotify generated playlists don't reflect the music I listen to (the vast majority not through Spotify) - if they used last.fm they might be able to make a better stab at it! So, under my purchase model, Spotify royalties are far from the only income stream from me to the artist and record label. I'd love to know how widespread that is! Looks from the 'manual' (http://media.music-group.com/media/PLM/data/docs/P0A12/UFO202_P0A12_M_EN.pdf) that the line outs are active at the same time as the USB out, though I've not tried it. Yes, definitely the trade-off - I have no desire to have tablet/phone in the bedroom, and if I did, fidgeting through to the app to operate a Sonos is not attractive to me (OK for managing a HiFi connected device though). I know the OP said they had limited time available for tinkering, but I've got a couple of Raspberry Pi running piCorePlayer, which uses Squeezelite, and has a web UI for admin and setup tasks. I'm using one with a HiFiBerry DAC, the other with a USB Headphone DAC. They really didn't take very long to setup and perform pretty well in my opinion. Re: [slim] problem with logging into squeezebox
It's quite straightforward to set up, but if you have any difficulty you can always burn a new image to the SD card... I boot first with a wired connection to the router, then set up wifi. I don't use keyboard, mouse or monitor - I use ssh from my laptop to connect. If you are using a hard drive with the music files you're likely to need a powered USB hub. If you're using the Pi only as a player (rather than a server) I'd recommend looking at piCorePlayer - see the long thread in the Linux/Unix forum. I now have a second Pi with the Element 14 Wolfson DAC - this has a different feature set than the HiFiBerry DAC. One of the appeals to me of the Raspberry Pi was the enclosures available for it, but it seems the enclosures won't hold a HiFiBerry? I appreciate the help. I have a small case which holds the Pi with HiFiBerry - I ordered the HiFiBerry without the RCA sockets pre-soldered. I wired them to the board and mounted them on the top of the case by drilling holes in the case through which the sockets protrude, rather like one of the pictures on the HiFiBerry web page. Re: [slim] Beats Music to replace MOG..Where does that leave Squeezebox?
garym wrote: In my opinion, all these streaming services should be considered short term music collections at best. That is, none of them are likely to last more than 5 years without going under, being bought (and changed), etc. This business is still in its infancy and lots of change is to be expected. A nice app someone could develop is something to save all your playlists built on (MOG, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.) and allow you to move to a different service and try to have that service automatically recreate your playlists to the extent possible. I think this point is absolutely right. I use Spotify and last.fm as a means to listen to new music - things I like I will buy, either in physical format or as download. It's a cash-flow to artists and labels that tends to be overlooked in discussions about the Spotify business model and the revenue flow from Spotify to artists (I've been a Premium Spotify subscriber for nearly a year now, and it's increased my purchase rate of new music considerably). Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 7, the iOS 7 Squeezebox App for iPhone and iPad
Love the new UI, a great improvement on the old one! One odd thing: I'm seeing a bit of confusion with artwork - occasional albums seem to be associated with the artwork from a different album. I have the artwork as cover.jpg in the relevant album folder. Artwork is fine on the LMS web page, on the Touch, on Squeezeplay, on Squeezepad and on the old version of iPeng (which is still installed). And I'm assuming that with a new owner (Beats headphones?), MOG's setup will change soon enough anyway. I trust Triode more than MOG! I've also opened a Spotify account, so Triode's plugin is valuable. I rarely use mysb.com directly...and in fact most of the plugins I use appear to be LMS plugins, since blocking mysb.com at my router doesn't affect those I use regularly (it does kill last.fm and the non-Triode Spotify plugin).
