Well of course the way to solve this is to only insert bitmaps of X's into
all of your Word docs
AFAIK, the issue is that Outlook 2k has a different MAPI version than E2k
(and most Ex5.5 versions too) and that can cause major issues.
I don't recall seeing any change to that recommendations.

I have run into the same problem. But I have it working now. It seems to
work only when I set my home PC workgroup = domain name at the office, set
quick logon to the office domain name, and login in to my WIN98Me home PC
with the same username/password as my office username/password.

Further down the Services/Addressing dialog there is an option to specify
which address list to use for checking names against. You could try adding
the users contacts list and local recipients list in there and move them up
in the search order.
