OT: In memory of Bruce Foster
Hello Framers, Thank you to those who supported my son Jason and I in our efforts to raise money for cancer research. We completed the 104 mile route of the Ride for Roswell this past Saturday. I rode in memory of Bruce Foster and Jason rode in memory of his grandfather, Richard Quatro. While the ride was a challenge, it was a great experience to participate with nearly 8,000 riders to raise over $1,000,000 for a world-class cancer research and treatment center. OT: Riding in memory of Bruce Foster
Hello Framers, My son and I will be riding the 2013 Ride for Roswell for cancer research later this month. This year we will be riding the 104 mile route. I will ride in memory of Bruce Foster, while Jason will ride in memory of his grandfather, Dr. Richard J Quatro. If you would like to donate, please go to my blog: http://frameautomation.com/?p=247 We will be giving away new ExtendScript versions of a couple of my plugins, including the source code. If you are using FrameMaker 10 or 11 and want to try your hand at scripting, these will give you insight on what is involved. If you are using FrameMaker 9 or below, you will receive the original plugins. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very much. I need italics for ship names in my Roman list of figures &a graphics issue with memory
Dear Framers: I need the italics of ship names in my captions to illustrations respected in the List of Figures (LOF). The fig. part is simple e.g. Fig 1:3~HMS Vanguard enters Table Bay I am sure I have learnt this some time ago and know how to do the Indexes in this way, but cannot find the trick in the manual. Despite my early misgivings of FM11 I can happily report on flawless operations. However, I do get the occasional "Cannot import some graphics" All my graphics are jpg and below 250k and are referenced according to the best practice of this listserv so I am puzzled by what is causing this instability. Would it be good to increase my Graphics memory or RAM or both? Thanks for a wonderful service. You could also use a text editor to compare the MIF files. That'd get text changes, including changes in tables. Problems comparing large books: due to memory issues--or what?
I have been comparing several FM books (specs bound for ISO) that are large with lots of docs that contain many referenced Visio's and text insets. I have converted the text insets (MIFs full of tables) to text so table entries will compare. But the compare function is not consistently working. I either get a FM crash, an incomplete number of CMP files (missing CMP files when I know the file changed), or just plain incorrect CMP files (CMP file just mimics previous version). I do not need the Visio's to compare, but I do need table text to compare (show what's deleted/added). I am looking to memory as a cause, and will try to compare some more after closing all other programs and functions, but I thought I'd check the list to see if anybody has experience with this. Normally I don't do book compares, but we are starting a new version of our spec, and reviewers have asked to see all changes indicated specifically--not just with change bars. Thank you in advance! PS: I have 3GB of memory, 32-bit operating system. PPS: I have thought to compare PDFs, but I fear the markup would be horrendous and useless. You don't say which version of FrameMaker you are using, but I can tell you that in ever version of FrameMaker I have used on a daily basis (5.5.6 through 8.0), the compare documents feature has had some *significant* shortcomings. And I'm sure you aren't going to welcome the news, but comparing tabular content has always been the weakest aspect of an already weak feature. Sometimes (on rare occasions, in my experience...), Frame will figure out what has changed inside a table, but most of the time it simply marks the whole table object as having been changed, which is basically useless. It's easy to understand why it might throw up its figurative hands when the number or arrangement of cells is different between two tables, but why it chokes when the tables are identically laid out and nearly identical in content is beyond me. Of course it's possible that some of this has been improved in FM9 or FM10. But I don't know about that because I'm stuck on FM8 for the time being. (I have a hard requirement to maintain backwards compatibilty with a team who are using the last version of FrameMaker for Solaris (7.0), and our corporate software licensing folks really, really don't like it when you try to have two different versions of the same tool on your system.) -Fred Ridder From: marilyn.faus...@snia.org To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2012 18:36:59 + Subject: Problems comparing large books: due to memory issues--or what? insufficient memory to import file
Well, it's been a long time since I've done more than browse the messages from the Framerslist. Hopefully someone might be able to help me though. When opening xml files with CGM graphics, I keep getting the message "insufficient memory to import file" in the XML Read Report Log. Graphics elements are stripped from the document and the document becomes invalid. Not to mentions this is disastrous if the error is overlooked and the file is saved. All graphics need to be re-imported. FrameMaker 7.1, Windows XP Professional SP3, 4Gb RAM

I presume you saved your changes before closing? I don't know what you're referring to regarding "the panel not working." You should keep this discussion on the list where there are people who use FM 9 on Win 7 (I don't). And providing more information would help them help you -- for starters, how many FM files are open when the problems occur, how big they are, whether they contain embedded graphics or OLE objects, and from Task Manager, how much memory FM is using and how much physical memory is available. I have limited experience with FM 9 and none with Win 7. And I don't know anything about your work situation (how many files you have open at a time, how big they are, do they contain embedded graphics or OLE objects, etc.) But something seems seriously amiss. Your old PCs shouldn't have been causing "all kinds of issues" -- they sound perfectly adequate for FM. AFAIK, FM 9 isn't multi-threaded, so multiple processors/cores don't really make much difference. And unless your resource demands are quite unusual, 1.5 GB of physical memory should be plenty. For perspective, I'm on a Win XP SP3 PC with 2 GB of physical memory, and I'm currently running FM 7.2 (17 files open), Word 2007 (2 files open), PowerPoint 2007, FireFox (2 windows, 20+ tabs), CaliberRM (requirements management) client, VMware server console client, Task Manager, and the usual stuff that runs all the time in the background (McAfee, Acrotray, etc.). I still have about 400 MB of physical memory available. With a book and 16 component files open, FM is using 32 MB of memory. I can't even imagine what it would take for FM to chew up more than a Gig. Have you looked in Task Manager to see how much memory FM is using, how much total memory is being used, etc? You say you're running McAfee. But I have to wonder if both your old and new PCs might be infected with something. Richard G. Then, I got an alert that I should close some windows because there was not enough memory (?). Which happens periodically. We had been using single processors with 1.5 G of memory and of course we were having all kinds of issues. We upgraded so we would not be getting these errors. Hi, Karen. I am running FrameMaker 9 on Windows 7 64-bit. It is a 64-bit, 8GB memory Lenovo laptop with a dual-core Intel 3.0G Core Duo processor. Not entirely identical to your system, but similar enough. I can say that I do not have any problems of running out of memory on my system - even with relatively heavy FrameMaker use for hours. And, there are other programs running too. Hope you can figure out what it is. There are some Windows tools that may help track things down. Minimizing layout work on localised manuals using trados translation memory
Hi, At our company they established a step called "incoming inspection". During this step, the publisher colleagues check the incoming Frame files and they allow more space for the call-out, tables etc. We work into 16 European languages, and as linguist - by the time the files get to me - I hardly ever have any space issues in the Frame files. During the translation phase, in Trados Tag Editor, one can also "play some tricks" using tags to insert non-breaking spaces etc. When I convert from the Trados translation environment into Frame, sometimes some text boxes have to be enlarged, but this is only occassional and it does not really take a lot of time. The EN source material is not written by us, we receive it from another department, so I have no idea how those guys tackle this. In case of major updates of an English manual do you simply run it through the translation memory and redo the layout work on localized files? Any tips on minimizing the layout work are welcome. Can we do more to minimize layout work on translated manuals if we go structured? Out of Frame Memory message and crash
Hi Everyone,I fixed it! thanks for all of the useful suggestions. I finally removed the new 8.03 (8.0p276) patcher using add/remove programs and guess.. what everything works once more! This is truly very odd as I thought that the new patch was supposed to cure a lot of things. Anyway, i'm happy now as I have to finish some 1700 pages of docs for tomorrow. Do you have lots of room on your hard drive for temporary files? Check to see if you're running low on disk space on the drive/partition that holds your TEMP (or TMP) directory. On any drive/partition, for that matter. How much memory do you have? Have you made any changes to virtual memory settings? Check your paging file size and if it's custom (not system-managed), consider increasing it so that it's at least 1.5 times your physical memory. Or let the system manage it. Defrag your drive(s). Reboot. If none of those things help, you may have developed a hardware problem, such as failing or flaky memory. If you're comfortable mucking about in the case, try reseating your memory sticks and any cards you have. BTW, why are you printing to a PostScript file? If it's to create a PDF, you don't need to do it that way, but if you insist, in Print Setup, select the printer named Adobe PDF. No other PostScript printer is appropriate for creating PDFs, and if you're using "clonescript" (non-Adobe copy of PostScript) printers, that might cause who-knows-what kinds of problems. :-} HTH! Memory
Folks, I'm running a Dell Dimension 8200, 2.53ghz, 1gig PC800RAM, FrameMaker 7.0p579. I am accustomed to Frame's memory leak, but this looks different...see pix. Notice the Task Bar. Only Outlook, Firefox, FrameMaker, and TextPad were open. Only one file was open in FrameMaker. I had just inserted and formated two graphics and some text. Is additional RAM a potential solution?...thanks, Kelly. ___ You are currently subscribed to Framers as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send list messages to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/archive%40mail-archive.com Send administrative questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit http://www.frameusers.com/ for more resources and info.

Some people, with some .pngs, find that the colors migrate into the FM color definitions. Hard to find a pattern though... may be the application that generates the .png. Well, first, how much memory do you have? FM runs graphics through an import filter and if you actually are low on RAM Then, specific to .PNGs, open it an set the bit depth to 8 bits; if it's 24 you may have other problems. Hi Alex, I have seen this with certain PNG files, but I don't know exactly what causes the problem. My solution is to open the PNG with Photoshop and resave it and then try to import it again. Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing 585-659-8267 www.frameexpert.com > i've got the following error while importing a XML file refers to png in > FrameMaker 7.0 / 7.1. Art Campbell wrote: > Then, specific to .PNGs, open it an set the bit depth to 8 > bits; if it's 24 you may have other problems. Actually, that's a bad idea. There is remarkably little size difference between 24-bit and 8-bit PNGs. And the latter have an annoying disadvantage when imported into FM: they use a 256-color palette ("indexed color"), and the entire palette gets added to the FM document's color definitions. Import several 8-bit PNGs, and your color definitions list contains hundreds of entries like "RGB 165, 000, 102." I've never heard of any problems specifically associated with 24-bit color in PNGs, and I've been using them for years. Occasionally, I've encountered one that FM's filter can't handle, and Rick Quatro's method of opening it in a graphics program and resaving has always fixed that. RE: png graphic: insufficient memory to import file.....
Some people, with some .pngs, find that the colors migrate into the FM color definitions. Hard to find a pattern though... may be the application that generates the .png. Out of Memory Errors
Greetings, I'm working on a rather graphics-heavy project. I made a black and white version using EPS and PNG files, and everything was fine. Now I'm making a color version, and things aren't so fine. 1. Some of the PNG files (made with Corel Draw X3) are not being recognized by FrameMaker as PNG files. Frame asks me to import the image using a PNG filter. They worked fine in black and white, but no so much in color. They are different images, the black and white images are not grayscaled versions of the color. I took copies of the black and white images and colored them. Any ideas as to why FrameMaker isn't recognizing the PNG files? 2. After trying to print the book several times, being told that images Frame could view the last time I opened the file 'will be imported as gray boxes', I get "FrameMaker is out of memory" errors. FrameMaker has also given me several "Sorry, FrameMaker has to unexpectedly quit" errors. Since all the info you get is Hex, I have no idea. Are all the color images (much larger than black and white, plus they're at a high (300-600 dpi) resolution so that they will print well) confusing FrameMaker? 3. If I can get Frame to acknowledge the PNG files, and instead of printing my book, I print each individual Frame file and piece it together in Adobe Acrobat, will I lose any quality as far as a printer is concerned? Thanks. I'm getting rather frustrated, so any insight will be GREATLY appreciated. I would like this done by Friday, if possible. Zoë The fish are biting. Get more visitors on your site using Yahoo! Hi Joe, How much real RAM do you have on your computers? Rick Quatro Carmen Publishing 585-659-8267 www.frameexpert.com When I tried installing Frame 5.5 on my new pc, a message popped up saying Director 5.5 needed 3MB of free virtual memory. I kept trying to adjust my virtual memory in Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual memory, Change. However, the Currently Allocated value continually shows the old value, not the new size value I put under Custom Size. Are there any secrets to setting the virtual memory size? Frame is the only application I've ever installed that causes this issue. Anyhow know why? I also got this same problem when installing 7.0 on my office pc. At home, I had to manually install via individual setups and of course, the distiller didn't install properly so I can't save as pdf. So I really need to solve this Virtual memory issue. I'd appreciate any advice/help. Thanks. Joseph Campo | Senior Technical Writer SolidWorks Corporation | www.solidworks.com 300 Baker Ave. | Concord | MA | 01742 | USA Phone: 978-371-5164

Director?? > I kept trying to adjust my virtual memory in Control Panel, > System, Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual memory, Change. > > However, the Currently Allocated value continually shows the > old value, not the new size value I put under Custom Size. What OS? How much RAM? You're trying to set a custom size for the paging file? Do you have administrator rights? How much free disk space is there on the drive on which you're putting your custom paging file? What's the currently allocated size? What's recommended? 3 MB is an absurdly small number. Before you started messing with it, was the paging file system-managed or custom? Something sounds screwed up. Or you have virtually no free disk space. > > Are there any secrets to setting the virtual memory size? > Have enough disk space. So I really need to solve this Virtual memory issue. I don't know what "manually install via individual setups" means, but if you're encountering this on multiple machines, I suspect you're screwing things up somehow. ;-) Not sure what else to look for, besides disk space and paging file size. If this is FM 5.5.6, Save As PDF doesn't work. Also, if this is a _new_ PC (Vista), there could be issues with FM 5.5.6. I think when that came out, Windows 3.1 was the cat's pajamas. :-) HTH! Depends how you have things set up. If you have been working from the network, and selected for FrameMaker to create a backup file, I'm afraid the default is to place the backup file in the working directory (right next to each other, it's daft!). I don't think FrameMaker keeps a local cache on the client machine I'm afraid.. Sorry. I think they're probably lost, but you could try searching for *.fm* files because some time-saved files have a system-generated suffix. Sorry. Hi, Ed: This approach works in 10.3.9, so it might be a Tiger change nobody's yet encountered. Have you tried starting up in OS 9.x, if Tiger permits it, setting the memory, then quitting and restarting in Tiger? Also, have you checked your permissions for the application? Your current account may not have the same permissions as the account FM was installed from. Perhaps running Disk Utility to reset permissions might help. In Classic Preferences you can display a memory usage indicator for Classic applications, so you can adjust your memory allocation to match the demands of your current project. Also, at least in 10.3.9, after you type in the memory setting value, close the Info panel immediately, then reopen it to make sure that your value is entered correctly. I've found that it's easy to unintentionally delete what you've just entered.
