For the record:
Older VirtualBox versions (<6.0) should still run on Windows XP, but I
didn't try for myself.
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=66264
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_2

By the way: Oldest version I have here is
`VirtualBox_1.5.6-1_Win_x86.msi` from 2008. It's only 18 Mbyte in size,
while v5.2.44 is 105 Mbyte.

Cheers,
Robert

The install I have wanted to try (in connectix vpc) is the test FreeDOS
FDT2404-Live CD.zip from ibiblio. The test fails on both options with or
without sources added. TestDisk is where it will always stop.
‘Util\testdisk’ package. A reboot may help.

The installer is batch based. It uses other executable utilities to perform the
required tasks. This limits the amount of information that is passed back to
the installer when an error occurs.

However, there are only a couple things that generally cause an install to fail
after packages have already started to extract successfully.

Corrupted install media.
Insufficient disk space.
File conflicts.

Around the time of the 1.3 release, there was a file conflict that would occur
when Full+Sources was selected. One of the packages contained its source files
and those of another package. So when selected, it would cause a conflict
during installation. That conflict was resolved and does not occur in the
latest test builds.

You could just install BASE with or without sources. Then after rebooting from
the installed system, put the CD back into the drive and run FDIMPLES.

That will make it easy to install any additional packages that could have been
installed with FULL or those from the BonusCD.

You could also try the monthly interim test build of FreeDOS. While it is not a
“release”, it contains many fixes since 1.3 and numerous software updates.
However, it is a test build and some of the updated software may have issues.
It is available on ibiblio in the test directory for distributions.

If your installing Full + Sources, possibly not.

>
> Is there any way to find out why it crashes?

Not really.

When 1.3 was released, there was no reliable good was to record such
information during installation.

Since that time, a new utility was created that can efficiently record boot
messages, program output and other messages. That programs recording could be
output to a log when needed.

However, no decision has been made to use the program on the install media. If
it were, support could be added to the installer to record more detailed
information about the installation process.

Well, mostly yes. But, there are some issues with dying it that way.

Most programs that come with FreeDOS will work fine regardless of what
directory they are located. However, a few won’t and need configured for their
location.

Also, the directories in the zip archive are meta-directories. Many paths are
remapped during the package installation.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS install

2024-04-06 Thread Norby Droid via Freedos-user
One issue I find alot when tryin to install FreeDos is that it would go
most of the way through the install then without any reason and no
explanation as to why, it just stops and says there is a problem so reboot
or exit.

I have FD in three locations. Second drive in my old desktop, usb drive,
and in connectix virtual pc in windows xp. The glitch would happen no
matter which environment I use. I decided to use 7zip to test and extract
all files from the liveCD and all passed and was successful. As another
test I went in and tested all the .zip files found in the directories and
they also all passed the test. I take from this that if the files are good
then the issue is with my system?

Is there any way to find out why it crashes? I know in the latest version
on ibiblio the file “TestDisk” is where it would always crash. Is it
possible to just extract all the .zip files into separate directories in
each folder the zips reside in and still have a proper FreeDos install?

I love FreeDos and use it more than xp for Basic Programming in a couple
different ones (PowerBasic 3.5 and FreeBasic).

Thank You Jim Hall amd all those involved with its development.

FYI: I've finished grading so now I'm starting on the calendar.

The calendar will be a series of screenshots of FreeDOS programs, and
possibly a little "info box" on each to talk about it. I'm open to
suggestions! Currently I'm thinking about these (not in order):

- FreeDOS command.com ("FreeCOM") version 0.60 [screenshot from FreeDOS Alpha 5]

- FreeDOS kernel 0.92 [screenshot from FreeDOS Beta 1]

- "Welcome to the FreeDOS install program (version 2.2)" [screenshot
from FreeDOS Beta 2]

- installing FreeDOS Kernel 2010 [screenshot from FreeDOS Beta 5]

- screenshot of FreeDOS Beta 9 boot CD menu

- screenshot of Block Drop

- screenshot of the standard 16-color (8 background colors) screen test

- screenshot of Edlin 2.23 [probably for May, because that was the
month Gregory released the first version of Edlin]

- screenshot of FreeDOS installer [from FreeDOS 1.0]

- screenshot of FDIMPLES [from FreeDOS 1.3]

- screenshot of "FreeDOS 1.3 - Install" [from FreeDOS 1.3]

- screenshot of FreeDOS 1.3 after it's booted to the command line

Of these, 5 are basically black with gray text (alpha 5 command.com,
beta 1 kernel, beta 2 install, edlin, and FreeDOS 1.3 after boot). And
4 are basically blue with text (beta 3 install, FreeDOS 1.0 install,
FDIMPLES, and FreeDOS 1.3 install). That might not be very visually
interesting - but probably interesting historically. Would you
recommend *not* using any of the above screenshots? Are there other
screenshots that you'd like to see instead?

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS or DOS based mail clients

2023-11-27 Thread Bret Johnson via Freedos-user
My understanding is that there are two major differences between POP and IMAP.
The first is that POP only allows one-way communication (downloading from the
server to the client) so there is no synchronization mechanism. If you
download the same e-mail to multiple devices, each one can be set up
differently (specifically in terms of folders). When you want to send mail,
you must use a different protocol (SMTP).

The second difference is that IMAP is designed to be used in a client-server
configuration where the e-mails stay stored on the server and are never
actually downloaded (at least not permanently) to the client. That allows
access to the same e-mail account from multiple devices and there is only one
"real" copy of the e-mail (stored on the server). Programs like MS Outlook can
store a local cached version of the e-mail, and there can be a lot of
complication involved in making sure the cache stays synchronized with reality
(what's on the server is "reality").

There are advantages and disadvantages to each approach.

Hi Jose,

  > PS: The older POP3 only allowed access to the inbox,
  > while IMAP also allows access to your other mail folders,
  > so I expect most mail providers to support IMAP now.

   I thought that folders were a client-side
convention, and mail (POP3, IMAP) servers kept
all incoming mail to one address together.

Folders are something managed on the server and you
can use either IMAP or webmail to access them.

With POP3, you can only access the inbox, so you
would have to use the client to move individual
mails to folders stored on your local disk. The
mails in those client side folders would not be
visible on other devices or webmail, so I assume
and hope that most providers support IMAP today,
so all devices can share the same folders :-)

According to the google support website, IMAP
will always be active for gmail in the future.

No idea how old the article is - probably the
future already is now :-) In the past, one had
to manually enable it using some online menu.

The google support website recommends that you
do not store sent mail on the server manually,
as sending mails via google will automatically
do that already. It also recommends to save
drafts, but not deleted mails on the server and
it recommends to not move deleted mails to the
trash can folder, as they would get permanently
deletted after a month in the trash can and
google prefers old mails to stay forever :-p
It recommends that you set your client to just
mark deleted mails as deleted where they are.

Servers for Gmail:

smtp.gmail.com TLS port 587 or SSL port 465.

imap.gmail.com SSL port 993.

pop.gmail.com SSL port 995 (but IMAP is better).

Use the email address as user name to log in.

Might be a DOS History 101 level question, but I'm definitely more of

reason why DOS didn't catch up with networking (as compared to

remember being somewhat surprised when I realized there really aren't
that many simple mail clients for DOS available.

I may need to pay someone to do the configuring for me here at shellworld

Text-based? Probably not. Though I always say it's not impossible ...

I did use SquirrelMail in Links & text-mode Linux 1-2 years ago.
IIRC, Navigating frames (which SM uses) was slightly annoying, but doable.
Because it is simple HTML, it should be possible to skip SM's side
pane altogether and only display the mailbox view, though.

Even if it was (due to the frames) not exactly a streamlined
experience, I was definitely able to read and write mails, so for
smaller workloads, it is fine.

There is also the w3m text browser, which had handy vi-like
keybindings etc, but the tables and frames rendering is not as good as
in Links. Apparently there has been a DJGPP-based port, but (after
some googling) it might have been from ~20 years ago.
http://w3m.rocks/
https://github.com/albfan/w3m/blob/master/doc/README (confirmation on
the DOS port)

I can't remember if I ever tried to use Gmail with w3m, though. In any
case, Links was better at this.

I was actually going to suggest the exact same solution (forwarding
Gmail to a SM-based account). I'll very probably have to go the same
route myself, because Gmail's default view always feels a bit "too
much of everything". Or ditch Gmail altogether, finally... :) Not
easy, because it is already tied to a bunch of online services.

FWIW, I have an Unix shell account at sdf.org -- they are using
NetBSD, and here are the mail tools available from the command line:
http://sdf.lonestar.org/index.cgi?faq?EMAIL?02

(I've only used SquirrelMail from them, though, and maybe tested Pine.)

Might be a DOS History 101 level question, but I'm definitely more of
an end-user, so I dare :) -- Historically, what was actually the
reason why DOS didn't catch up with networking (as compared to
Unix-land)? Security issues, the system being single-user, etc? I
remember being somewhat surprised when I realized there really aren't
that many simple mail clients for DOS available.

Best,
Mart

Hi!

As it seems that sshdos (ssh) and the links text mode browser
for DOS support current security protocols and https:

Does anybody here have experience with using a squirrelmail
or roundcoube webmail in links? Might need less java script
compared to gmail to use those, and one could forward the
gmail mail to a mail provider with squirrelmail or roundcube.

Another option, given that shellworld offers access to
Ubuntu Linux servers, would be to use any of the current
or less current text mode email clients. As long as they
support imap (or pop3) etc. they should work with gmail?

For example mutt, pine, alpine, cone, or the old mailx.

Graphical mail clients for DOS are not the answer here.

Regards, Eric

PS: I also wonder whether it is an option to run a Linux
email client in a shell directly on the router at home?

[Freedos-user] freedos, or dos based mail clients?

2023-11-20 Thread Karen Lewellen via Freedos-user

Hi folks,
Google intends removing all access to basic HTML, and is forcing the issue
as of today.
Because I keep a great deal of content in my personal gmail account, even
using their web interface to convert documents I must sometimes read, I am
seeking alternatives.
If I am honest, my preference would be an email client I can incorporate
with Links for DOS and run from my desktop, that would pass gmail's
noninclusive for me due to my combination of disability experiences
verification process. Or something I can set up that gives me access to
all of my content.
A second option would be a command line browser tool that substituted
for the gmail interface, but that, if I could not use it directly from
DOS, could be set up in the Ubuntu shell I have with shellworld.

My question is this.
is there a DOS only based email client, in freedos, in djppp or something
that might meet this need?

Thanks for ideas and questions,
Kare

Well, I did not known much Gopher (that seems to have come down in popularity
at the end of the nineties).

I think Gemini is about middle ground between Gopher and HTML.

Gemini seems to be Unicode (rather than ASCII), have 3 text heading levels
(seems Gopher had none), have list and preformated text regions (that Gopher
have, did not have).
The fact also that carrier returns are respected in gemini-text, make it much
more easier to create/format than HTML (comparing to the web rather than Gopher
here).

Contrary to HTML also, no stuff in the middle of text: links, change to bold,
etc. Only links on full lines.

It is probably this simplified HTML, but not to the point of Gopher, that make
it interesting today.

About TLS, seems most capsules (term for Gemini sites I was searching for in my
previous message) are using self-signed certificates.
Meaning, you know that the author is the same as last time you visited (unsure
how well the gemini clients handled certificates history)... just not sure it
is really who he claims to be. (My knowledge about TLS is relatively limited).

Not quite. Like HTTP or Gopher, Gemini can serve any filetype at all,
including images, audio, video and computer programs. There are tens
of thousands of images in Geminispace, about five thousand PDF
documents, and thousands of audio files!

But the only thing that a Gemini document can do with those files is
link to them. You can't embed images or videos inside a page, sticking
them in the background or between bits of text. Nothing ever plays
automatically. All you can do is say to your reader, "Hey, here's a
link to a picture, or a video, or some music". It's up to them whether
they click the link or not - in Geminispace, the reader is always in
control, not the author. "

run a Gemini Browser is appropriate for FreeDOS.
Well, I guess FreeDOS could allow for Gemini server too, but because
it would be the only application running on FreeDOS, it is probably
not much interesting.

I think it could be interesting to consider doing a Gemini set of

Gemini is an invention that shoehorns a gopher-like protocol into TLS.

TLS is everything but "low ressource".

For a low-power internet protocol there is the original Gopher.
FreeDOS comes with at least one gopher client already: gopherus.

similar vein to CP437's peseta sign.
Although the initial opinion was supporting, acceptance of this proposal
has been stalled by some dissenting members of the Unicode Technical
Committee despite this character having been supported on many different
(mostly historic and Hungarian) computer systems, including FreeDOS, which
has a Ft sign at 0x9F in code page 57781 (Hungarian), which is currently
unmappable to Unicode because of this character missing.
I'd like to ask the community's opinion and possible endorsements to get
the UTC to accept the symbol, which is also needed for porting other DOS
software from Hungary (some still in productive non-hobby use, e.g.
point-of-sale systems).

Thanks,
Vacek

Wow, this is an old thread (over 3 years)!

KEYB requiring a 286 or better is based solely on:

$ grep 286 *
KEYBMSG.DE:STR2_7 = 'KEYB braucht (immer noch) einen AT/286 oder besser';
KEYBMSG.NLS:STR2_7 = 'Keyb (still) requires an AT/286 or better';

Being an English language and keyboard user, I neither use nor possess

support for hardware older than a 286 or options that provide compatibility, I
would not know they exist.

I am using pure DOS, including the packet driver setup for my desktop

My hope, as You provide here, is a list of suitable network hardware, cards

If it is not freedos specific, meaning freedos can manage any such card,
that may be a solution, some of the 3com tools manage this.

For one, as DOS/V would specifically apply to Japanese (but the same

"characters")) has the concept of upper case/lower case...

NNANSI implements it), it should call  KEYB

Ok, here is were that soft brown matter hits the fast rotating household
appliance. I am pretty sure that in order to create a DBCS version of
MS/PC-DOS, they did not use one and the same code base. Some basic DOS
function would have to be completely replaced with DBCS aware versions,
I don't think you can simply maintain dual-capable versions without
significantly increased memory requirements.

And most importantly, I don't think that we at FreeDOS have simply the
capacity to do any such adaptation. It would require AT LEAST one person
that is fluent in English and Japanese, as well as being sufficiently
proficient in programming.  I don't think there is even remotely anyone
that could possibly fill that role within the current participants, nor
even lurkers, or they would be more active (and possibly proposing
required changes).

This would not only apply to adaptations to the before mentioned East
Asian languages and scripting systems, but also to things like
right-to-left systems like Arabic and Hebrew
(Urdu/Farsi/Pashto/Punjabi/Sindhi/etc)

Hello!

Although I am some years late, my thoughts on this thread. By the way, a
very interesting thread on localisation for a hard case (the need for DBCS).

These thoughts are provided from the simple logic, not knowing about DOS/V.
In my understanding, supporting Japanese would *at least* require the
following functionalities, where the clue is given by NLSFUNC/COUNTRY:
* Country settings (for date, currency, etc.), that should be easy.

All that I can come up with for adding NLS support to DOS (probably there
are more that I am neglecting).

Right. I thought about it later and wondered what the other DOS
stacks did. What does MS-NET or Trumpet do? Probably the same thing
as mTCP and WATTCP. I remember using ping in DOS to ensure
connectivity to Gateways and DNS, but I wasn't running any servers so
there was little reason to ping the DOS machine.

Read the documentation for whatever networking software you are using.

mTCP in particular is not a "resident" program, so your FreeDOS machine
will not respond to ping requests unless an mTCP program is actively
running. WATTCP programs have the same behavior.

Can you ping in the other direction? It may be that the bridged vmbr0
interface does not pass or there is nothing in the networking stack that
listens for ICMP packets.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS Interim Builds

2022-12-01 Thread Jerome Shidel
Hi everybody,

I’m not sure if everyone is aware or not. So, I figured I mention this here…

We’ve been releasing FreeDOS Interim Builds for about 6 months now. I build
them on the 1st of the month and push them up to the server for testing. These
builds include the latest versions of our packages and the current state of the
OS. These are not OS point releases. These builds are mainly for testing
purposes and things can change a lot from one build to the next.

We can always use more eyeballs to test things and provide feedback. If you
interested in giving them a whirl, just head over to
https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/test/

and grab it.

Occasionally when testers visit the server, they will see an old version. This
is in part the servers stated cache settings and in part the web browser used.
So, you may need to force it to refresh the page when checking for a new
version.

When possible, any bugs or issues should be reported through the FreeDOS
Archive on GitLab at https://gitlab.com/FreeDOS .
That way we can keep track of them. If you are not a member on GitLab, you can
also use the link on the https://freedos.org/bugs/
page to email any issues.

:-)

Thanks,

Yes, or if you want to have HTTPS in WinXP, you can set up retro https

This is probably a result of Windows XP not supporting the minimum required
protocols to establish a secure connection. Luckily, you can connect to the
official download server without establishing a secure connect at the same url
using just http instead of https. For example,
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/ to

Hi everyone!

I've managed to overload myself - that's good for a consultant, but
bad for work-life balance. (That's also why I've been so silent on
email lately.) So I need to take a break where I can. I love getting

Let's cancel the FreeDOS virtual get-togethers for October, November,

if folks want to keep doing them.

Hello,

And there we go with the example I was referring to in my previous email:
the same language requiring two keyboard layouts (possibly two codepages
too).
Well, I seem to understand that your problem is with the installer: it
should have given you the option to choose Canada/French to use a
non-French/France layout.

If I took it wrong, and you wanted a "hot-switch" of keyboard layouts from
FR/whatever to US/no-driver, with FD-KEYB you can switch it off/on with
Ctrl+Alt+F1.

BTW, this mail sounds to me a bit more of a freedos-user email rather than
a freedos-devel email, so I am adding the other list too :)

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS Partitioning reply

2022-05-09 Thread Daniel
Here is my exact steps:
Start fdisk and make sure to delete all partitions so I am starting fresh.

1) Create a Primarry partition of size 20480
2) Create an extended partition of max size
3) Fill up the rest of the drive with 20480, 20480, and the remaining space
left.

Once done I reboot the computer and restart freedos install.

Install seems to go properly, but once it reboots and starts to load I get
alot of size errors partition is this but should be that. It then asks for
the date and time and puts ky at the command prompt.

I will be testing this in a vm with a large drive to see if I get the same
results so I can record it and have snapshots to show.

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS Partitioning

2022-05-08 Thread Eric Auer

Hi Daniel!

I am tryin to install FD on a Dell PC with an 80 gb partition. I tried as
I prefered it spliting into 4 partitions, and as one large partition. When
I boot into the live CD all seems fine, but after it does the formating and
installing, I get a bunch of errors about the partitins. Looking at the
fdisk informations they seem to get changed from 20481 to 20489. Not sure
why. Can anyone check to see if this happens to them? Is there a size
limit currently for partitions?

Please share more details about the issue. If you want to have
4 partitions of 20 GB each, you will have to use FAT32, but it
is possible to have much larger FAT32 partitions. The limit in
your case will be the 2 TB limit for MBR partitioned disks and
sometimes a limit of how large disks are supported by the BIOS,
which could be 128 GB for old LBA BIOS versions. FAT32 itself
is limited to 2^28 clusters, which means that even for common
cluster size 4 kB you already reach 1 TB in a single partition.
And clusters can be much larger than that, so your effective
limit is the 2 TB disk size limit of 512 byte per sector MBR.

That said, I recommend that you use LBA mode for partitioning,
so the partition type should be 0c FAT32 LBA, not 0b FAT32 CHS.

If you use extended partitions, you would use 0f with LBA instead
of 05 with CHS, but as you mention that you planned to use exactly
four partitions, you probably do not use extended partitions here.
Likewise, if you would use FAT16, type 06 is CHS, type 0e is LBA,
but FAT16 partitions can be at most 2 GB (in some cases 4 GB).

If you are using an older version of FDISK, it may have some type
of rounding error which could explain what you are seeing, but if
it just rounds the size to the next whole cylinder in CHS mode,
that would just be something common to do and not a real error.

However, if you get inconsistencies and the partitions do not boot
or otherwise do not work properly, then that could be a real bug.

Regards, Eric

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS videos on YouTube

2022-05-05 Thread Jim Hall
Some folks asked that I post regular updates about the videos on the
FreeDOS YouTube channel, so they can follow them without subscribing
to the channel. I don't want to "spam" the list every time a new video
comes out, so I'm sharing these email updates with you about every
month or so:

* The FreeDOS YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/freedosproject

When we released FreeDOS 1.3, I posted a short video where I talked
about FreeDOS while I installed FreeDOS in the background. It's not
really a "how to install" video, but more of a "welcome to FreeDOS
1.3" video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dypXc4B4wI

Also check out this video about the "thank you" Easter egg that Jerome
included in the installer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XBgdVs00tY

I also have been showing off some DOS games running on FreeDOS. I
recently covered these four games:

"Tomb Raider" (DOS demo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTKvYuaQOBs

"Block Drop" (from FreeDOS 1.3)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7gTgaFrDeM

"RCross" (tiny RC car racing game)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EZNvZgEnbk

"Says Who" (from FreeDOS 1.3)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIbLFHQmv7g

And by request, I've returned to programming videos. The programming
videos were popular for a time, and some folks still ask for them,
even though they don't get a ton of views. These are meant to be
"introduction to programming" topics, and aren't very complex. (It's
hard to write a very complicated program in under an hour, especially
when you need to keep talking about what you're doing.)

Re: [Freedos-user] FreeDOS and Rufus

2022-04-17 Thread richardkolacz...@hotmail.com
My BOOT DOS USB stick was created using Rufus and the usb full image of RC5 and
created on the Windows 10 platform. Initially I had problems trying to create
the disk - but it turned out that because of me "folder protecting (windows)"
all drives - windows would not let me Rufus the stick. Simply by (temporarily)
" un folder protect the USB drive", I successfully created my USB BOOT via the
USB full RC5 image from your site.

I do not know about the CD version.

So I am always booting off the USB stick and it is partitioned with C:\, D:\
and E:\ drives. The C:\ drive is ~ 512 MB and with all the "full FreeDOS
stuff", it left me with about 70 MB. Tons of free space on D:\ and E:\ with my
16 GB USB stick. Note that I do not install FreeDOS on the hard drive (which
has Windows 10).

Using only the USB stick (not an additional CD drive) works fine with me.

Just a side note, I always ensure that if I want another USB stick at the same
time (eg data files) - that the additional USB sticks are "plugged in" BEFORE
freedos booting up. Also I had some issues in which of the 4 USB ports on my
laptop the BOOT stick is plugged in (if I had two or more USB sticks plugged
in). On my laptop, only two ports are USB 3, the other two are USB 2. Only one
of the USB 2 ports can handle a USB 1 device. So watch out on the USB "speed"
of the BOOT disk itself - may need to trial and error which stick goes where
(if more than one used).

Note my laptop has a "Legacy mode" and if I wanted to, could also have the CSM
(?) mode for DOS boot up.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

A first time user reported having issues booting the 1.3 LiveCD after creating
a USB stick with Rufus. Other than a few minor things, I don’t use windows. So
if one of you are familiar with the tools they are using, they could probably
use some help or at least some pointers on getting a bootable USB stick.

Hello,

in PO.KEY what I see is
26 + * !C5
in the common section (for every codepage). The second plane appears to be
AltGr | Shift

And 26 is in hex 1A.

File:Ps2 de keyboard scancode set 1.svg - Wikimedia Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ps2_de_keyboard_scancode_set_1.svg>

In short: it should be AltGr or Shift plus the key that seems to be on the
right of letter P.

Did it ever work on previous versions of KEYB or the layouts?

Thanks,
Aitor

Thanks, Jim:

Don't forget- our next FreeDOS virtual get-together is in 12 hours, at
*11am US/Central on Sunday, March 20.*
That's 3 AM Monday, Australian Eastern Daylight Time! Unfortunately that
day, I have an appointment. To prevent being shattered for that, I

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS virtual get-together coming up on March 20

2022-03-16 Thread Jim Hall
Hi everyone!

Every month (on the third Sunday), we have a virtual get-together so
we can meet online, and get to know each other as more than just an
email address. We alternate topics every month, between "social time"
and "technical," so people know what we'll focus on for that meeting.
(Some folks just want to be there for tech topics, others just want to
meet people.) For the March get-together, it's social time.

We'll meet online at 11am US/Central on Sunday, March 20. Use your
favorite timezone converter to find your local time.

I use BlueJeans for my consulting business, and BlueJeans worked well
last month. So we'll use BlueJeans again this month. You can join from
your browser or using the desktop meeting client from bluejeans.com -
I recommend the desktop client for best performance.

I'll share the meeting URL here (and on the website, and on Twitter,
and on Facebook, etc) shortly before the meeting starts. If I share
the meeting URL too far in advance, spammers try to hit it and
BlueJeans shuts down the meeting link.

See you on Sunday!

Thanks, to you and Louis,

but also I have been using Links -g
for a long time and am quite satisfied. However, as freedos still has
Arachne in its package -in fdimples- and there is also a new release of
Arachne 1.99, I thought it was still usable in freedos ( I still
remember the polemic ten years ago on freedos -user -mailing about the
request to abandon Arachne from freedos.)

Hi!
I have used Archne for a long time many years ago.
Currently,
both in freedos 1.2 and 1.3, ( no dosbox ) even with the latest release
of Arachne it is in fact impossible for me to use it.
 I know of
arachne's well known issues with https and jv, but it also seems to not
recognize the normal wattcp.cfg I use with links, lynx or gopherus. In
fact I have to manually set my ip address, nameserver, gateway and even
then it is very slow and often crashes. Even in off-line mode, for

 Are
there any underlying incompatibilities with freedos? is the 16 bit

Yet, I
repeat, with my ethernet drivers both links and gopherus are fine and
fast.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS in qemu: no internet-connection

2022-03-05 Thread Christian

Hi altogether,

I want to get *FreeDOS* going within *qemu*.

Quite a long time ago I downloaded the respective iso-file and the
installation went well.
In principle *FreeDOS* works fine with the exception of networking. I
simply can´t get qemu to let *FreeDOS* connect to the internet.

(Formerly I could; see below).

My command-line is:

qemu-system-i386 -m 32M -drive file=drivec.img,media=disk,format=raw
-net nic,model=ne2k_pci -drive file=FD12CD.iso,media=cdrom -boot order=d

According to the instructions on
http://wiki.freedos.org/wiki/index.php/Networking_FreeDOS_-_Quick_Networking_HowTo

I installed FDNET, mTCP and wget in FreeDOS. So things should work. Yet
they don´t (any more).

When starting FreeDOS everything looks right at first:

QEMU network detected

DHCP request sent, attempt 1: Offer received, Acknowledged
Good news everyone!

IPADDR = 10.0.2.15
NETMASK = 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY = 10.0.2.2
NAMESERVER = 10.0.2.3
LEASE_TIME = 86400 seconds

That used to work in the past. But things seem to have changed as of late:

When trying to use ping or the links browser internet connection doesn´t
seem to be established:

configuring through DHCP...failed
configuring through RARP...failed
error loading ... URL
Host not found

I dont know whether it has something to do with the fact that my means
of connecting to the internet has changed in the meantime.

I used to use a 3G-umts-stick (Huawei E 1550) , which was recognized as
a modem and used "*ppp0*".
My new 4G-stick is Huawei E 3372 and this one seems to work as a
*router*; so my internet connection is recognized as *LAN* (wired)
connection.

I´m guessing I have to change some settings in  C:\FDOS\WATTCP.CFG, but
I´m not quite sure.

Can anybody help me , please?

Many thanks in advance.
Many greetings.

Rosika

P.S.:

my system (host): Linux/Lubuntu 20.04.4 LTS, 64bit

It seems that vinyl booted FreeDOS feels richer, warmer, more open, because
of the grooves on the record allow for a more resonant quality.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1.3 qemu boot from USB

2022-02-24 Thread Bob Pryor
Hi All

A few weeks ago I used qemu and FreeDOS 1.3rc5 to fdisk and format 2
partitions on a USB3 mounted 128GB ssd.

sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc
Disk /dev/sdc: 111.79 GiB, 120034121728 bytes, 234441644 sectors
Disk model: SV300S37A12
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 33553920 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0xa641679a

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1 * 63 2104514 2104452 1G 6 FAT16
/dev/sdc2 2120580 234436544 232315965 110.8G c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

blkid
/dev/sdc1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL_FATBOOT="FREEDOS" LABEL="FREEDOS"
UUID="2F1C-12E7" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="a641679a-01"
/dev/sdc2: LABEL_FATBOOT="FREEDOSDATA" LABEL="FREEDOSDATA" UUID="3764-12E8"
BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="a641679a-02"

It booted fine after installing rc5.

I didn't really test anything other than confirming rw access to C: and D:
and ro the cdrom after booting.

My concerns then were mounting both partitions rw in linux and booting
FreeDOS 1.3rc5 in qemu with a graphics screen.

When I saw that FreeDOS 1.3 final was available I immediately installed it
from the live cd.

First install completed but was unusable, second install was fine.

Before each install, format C: /U /Q /S from FD13LIVE.iso

FDinstall.sh
#cd /home/bob/FreeDOS/QEMU_FreeDOS
sudo qemu-system-i386 -name FreeDOS -boot d -drive
file=/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x504b454e574f4f44,format=raw,index=0,media=disk
-cdrom FD13LIVE.iso -display curses

FD.sh
#cd /home/bob/FreeDOS/QEMU_FreeDOS
sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -name FreeDOS -boot c \
-drive
file=/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x504b454e574f4f44,format=raw,index=0,media=disk \
-drive
file=/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x504b454e574f4f44-part2,format=raw,index=1,media=disk
\
-usb -device usb-tablet \
-display curses
#SUCCESS all 5 modes boot FreeDOS 1.3 final

So far, I have succeeded with graphics, but not with mounting C: rw in
linux.

FDSU.sh
#su -
#cd /home/bob/FreeDOS/QEMU_FreeDOS
qemu-system-x86_64 -name FreeDOS -boot c \
-drive
file=/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x504b454e574f4f44,format=raw,index=0,media=disk \
-drive
file=/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x504b454e574f4f44-part2,format=raw,index=1,media=disk
\
-usb -device usb-tablet \
-device VGA,edid=on,xres=1280,yres=1024
#SUCCESS all 5 modes boot FreeDOS 1.3 final

Note: /dev/disk/by-id/wwn* is the same, regardless of bus or port.

I'm on a 4K tv, so I have to stretch the qemu window and View|Fit to use it.

I realise it is not recommended to run qemu as root, but it was necessary
in order to use physical partitions.

The nice thing is that I can move the USB3 ssd to other computers.

One more thing, openSUSE requires the drive to be hotplugged for qemu to
find it.

[Freedos-user] FreeDOS 1.3 in the news

2022-02-23 Thread Jim Hall
Hi everyone

A lot of news websites have picked up the FreeDOS 1.3 distribution. I've
tried to collect all the articles on the FreeDOS website. If I've missed
any, let me know and I'll add them.

On the "news archive" page , I also tried to
gather together any articles that seemed to be copies of each other. Some
are just links to each other, or reporting what another site already said
(rather than writing something new) and I put those as "hierarchical" items
in the list so you can see what goes with what. But for other articles that
have the same title, I just grouped them.

Here's the list. I count 61 articles so far, not counting our announcement
(the first item):

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos-user Digest, Vol 2173, Issue 1

2022-01-28 Thread Björn Morell
Looks right to me and yes GRUB is not that easy, I have a similar
machine an IBM 4DX 100 MHz with

3 Compact flash drives (CF to IDE) and one CDRW via a soudblaster IDE
interface, works really well

with UDVD2 even burning CDs from DOS.

DSL on hda1  Freedos on hdb1 , Dr-Dos on hdb2  and windows 95 (with lite
step

shell ) on hdc1 -

Never managed to boot Dr-Dos from GRUB so I installed Damn Small
Linux4.11 RC2 and picked Lilo as

bootloader, It allmoust worked out of the box everything booted except
Dr-Dos but LILO has some good

switches:

other=/dev/hdb1

  label="FreeDos(hdb1)"

  change automatic partition=/dev/hdb2 deactivate partition=/dev/hdb1
activate

  boot-as=0x80

other=/dev/hdb1

  label="DrDos(hdb1)"

  change automatic partition=/dev/hdb1 deactivate partition=/dev/hdb2
activate

  boot-as=0x80

other=/dev/hdc1

 label="Win95(hdc1)

 boot-as=0x80

Works fine I can boot all 4 without a problem.

I have a old Dell laptop that was originally XP that now is tri-boot.
I have FreeDos 1.3 RC5, XP, and even Linux.

In order to do this you cannot simply install everything normally, at
least as far as I know.  Feel free to correct me if I am wrong here.

Here is the steps that I found that works:
First wipe the drive that you want to use, then using fdisk setup a
partition for FreeDOS and another for the other operating system as an
extended partition.  Format and install FreeDOS on the first
partition.  Do nothing for the second partition.  Leave it alone until
you have installed FreeDOS installed andworking.

Once it is installed and working, install the Linux distro you want
and tell it to setup and use the second partition you had set up in fdisk.

This should allow you to use both Linux and FreeDOS together.

Notice: Order of install matters!  If you installed Linux, then
installed freeDOS you will need to update your grub to see and use the
new FreeDOS system which can be a pest.

I hope this was helpful.

the installer creates two backups and stores them in C:FreeDOS as
BOOT.MBR and BOOT.BSS. The MBR is created by FDISK when it is told to
update the boot code. The second is created by the SYS command. You
should be able to use FDISK to restore the MBR.
> There is an excellent
free DOS utility called MBRTOOL. It is not open source and has some
other distribution restrictions. But, it is free and can be legally
distributed as-is. Do to those restrictions it cannot be included with
the FreeDOS release. But, you can grab a mirrored copy from my website
at https://fd.lod.bz/redist/disk/MBRtool/ [4] v1.x is much smaller
than
v2.x. But, both work really well. It is a great tool to have laying
around for emergencies.
