Digital Camera

2009-09-05 Thread Stephen Conrad

OK, I am now using OS X 10.4.11 on a Quicksilver
I thought I'd try again to se if I could access 2 older Digital
Cameras (both are the same model) so I downloaded Macam 0.9.2 (after
searching for Macam OS X 10.4.11) and the Driver for that camera
(SS702, got it from a link off this list).
So far no luck. Image capture says there is No Image Capture device
connected and Macam does not see the camera either.

Here is what Apple System Profiler says about the camera:

USB 1.1 Device:

  Version: 1.00
  Bus Power (mA): 500
  Speed:Up to 12 Mb/sec
  Manufacturer: Jeilin
  Product ID: 0x0227
  Vendor ID:0x0979

Here is the info off the camera itself:

Model Number: 16380

Sokar International, Inc.

Edison, NJ 08817

In past postings on this subject (toy cameras) we've been calling the
 camera Sakar rather than Sakor.

So it was a typo. :P

Also, in the past you posted different Product ID# and Vendor ID #.

I think your two cameras of the perhaps the same model but DIFFERENT
 on the inside?

They look identical. One has no stickers on it but the other does.

Camera #1 is Product ID: 0x905c and Vendor ID: 0x2770 Manufacturer: SQ
 (Service Quality)
Camere #2 is Product ID: 0x0227 and Vendor ID: 0x0979 Manufacturer:
 Jeilin

 For Camera #1, I don't believe it's likely you've installed the
drivers correctly. These OS X drivers were very old, so they may not
work in 10.4.11, but, here we go again:

 The drivers were available here:
 http://web.archive.org/web/20070806172233/http://www.spectraintl.com/xdlds/SS702%20OS.sit

After you expand the .sit archive you'll have a folder called 905C
OSX10.1 in which there are two components. One is an OS X installer
package, the other is a Quicktime component. You'll need to place the
 Video905C.component into the HDLibraryQuicktime folder. I don't
think there is any ownership permissions requirement for this, so
you can just drag drop Video905C.component into the
HDLibraryQuicktime folder. I believe you'll need to reboot after
 this, but I'm not certain?
The installer package will install an application called
MYDSC_905C.app. Install this at the same time you add the component to
Quicktime. After you've rebooted, attach the camera via USB, cross
your fingers, and launch the MYDSC_905C.app and see what happens. This
should only work (if it works at all?) for Camera #1, the Sakar with
 IDs 0x905c and 0x2770.
IF this works for Camera #1, and the two cameras are VERY similar,
there's a chance you could modify the application to work with Camera
#2 also. To do this, you'd need to Ctl-click the application and Show
Package Contents and then go the the info.plist file inside the
application and add the new PID VID to the listing. If you can't
make the application work with Camera #1, there is little or no chance
it would work with Camera #2, so this is something to think about IF
 you get Camera #1 working.

Well, I rebooted and Macam still won't see the camera and neither will
Image Capture
And for the record, my folder was called 905C OSX10.3

Fastmail.fm question

2009-09-06 Thread Stephen Conrad

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Fiefox 3.5.2
In Safari it let me set my Display Style (I chose the pic of the Crab Nebula)
Now it doesn't want to show it.

Here is the info from Fastmail's site

'Display style' Popup Menu

The visible appearance of FastMail.FM is highly customizable using
'stylesheets'. With the popup menu you can select from the available
stylesheets.

Note: Because of compatibility problems with most browsers and even
the most basic stylesheets, FastMail.FM will default to not using any
stylesheet at all if it detects that your browser is not Internet
Explorer 5.0 or above, or Netscape 6.0 or above, or Firefox, or Opera
5.0 or above. Coloring will still occur, but it will use a basic HTML
approximation of the stylesheet which will not work well for all
styles.

When I look now I see: None, Standard (default), Minimal and Concise

You're supposed to you their application, MYDSC_905C.app. If
 MYDSC_905C.app won't work, I think you're out of luck in OS X.

A quick search shows no such file on this machine

You should probably use a windows PC to use to download the photos.
Once they're downloaded, it's easy to move them to the Mac.

Tried on a library computer. I believe the required reboot of the

And for the record, my folder was called 905C OSX10.3

You're correct, my mistake. When you unstuff duplicates it makes the
2nd copy with a different numerical ending. I stupidly created not one
or two copies, but six copies, which were called 905C OSX10.1 thru
905C OSX10.6. I mistakenly assumed that 10.1 would be the original,
and the others were all duplicates. Interesting that when then
original has a .3 at the end, StuffIt creates a .1, and then .2, and
then skips the original and proceeds higher for each successive
 duplicate.

placed at the root level of the HD.

Yes.
I used Spotlight to search and then I tried using Find
Neither showed it at all

Tried on a library computer. I believe the required reboot of the

You won't be able to use a library computer, it'll need install the
Windows software for the camera, and libraries won't allow that.
Honestly, I'd think about a different camera. If you have photos on
the cameras that you need to get off, find a PC, install the Windows
drivers, and download the photos. If you don't have the Windows
drivers, you'll have to locate them first (could be difficult), then
install them, then download the photos. If there are no photos on the
cameras that you need, sell these cameras to someone with a PC, and
get a Mac compatible camera (almost any camera).

I have 2 other cameras.
I just had these first and I took some pics with them.
And the library computers will let you install stuff, but when you
have to do a required Reboot it then deletes anything that was
installed (even Java updates that it prompts you to install)

USB 4-Port Hub

So, I plugged in (via USB) my USB Hub and I plugged in 2 USB Thumb

Now, it will take a 5V DC power cord and then I can switch it from
bus-powered to self-powered. However, the folks at Rat Shack (Radio

PS.I emailed Fastmail.fm about my issue and will let you know what they say.

You can download MacTracker for free, and then look in the Memory
section to see which models use PC2100. Some Macs require low
density RAM, and MacTracker does NOT distinguish this critical
aspect. If you use high density it will either boot as half the stated
size, or not boot at all. I don't know whether these models require
 low-density or not?

The only Mac models that can use your RAM are:

 867 MHz MDD
 1.0 GHz FW800 MDD
 1.0 GHz iMac G4 USB 1.1

Mouse Question

2009-10-04 Thread Stephen Conrad

OK, I plugged my Logitech Optical Mouse into my KB which is plugged
into my Belkin 4 Port USB Hub and sometimes I see the light on the
bottom of the mouse flash off then on. Sometimes all 4 lights (for the
ports) flash off and then back on.
It was plugged into my computer but I plugged 2 of my 3 4 Port USB
Hubs into the computer.
The Belkin is plugged into a power strip so it is not using Bus Power
to power it.
In case it helps here is what is plugged in:

Belkin - My KB and sometimes a camera (not plugged in now)

Other 4 Port USB Hub - 3 USB Thumb Drives

Any ideas?

 Opps! The GCE-8240B ISN'T a SuperDrive, or even a Combo Drive, it's a
CD-RW drive ONLY, this means NO DVDs at all. Only CDs and CDRW media.

Hmmm, the cover of the case says SUPER DRIVE

 Model:        HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B
  Revision:    1.05

Might want to update the firmware?
The last version was Revision: 1.08 available here:
 http://files.rpc1.org/index.php?act=viewid=1200

Normally, upgrading the firmware will give you better media
compatibility, and perhaps better burn characteristics.

But I don't have access to a PC to update the Firmware

The GCE-8240B is a 24x read, 10x write CDRW, so it's not too good by
modern 52x standards, but it's probably serviceable. To upgrade the
firmware you'd need to place the unit into a Windows PC, I don't think
there are any Macintosh update programs.

Well, I'm quite sure you'll need a PCI-USB-2 card to connect that Hub.
Connecting to the built-in USB (1.1) will probably work but only in USB 1.1

But don't forget: To use that Hub in USB 2 you'll need that PCI-USB-2 card

Macs can be found there for a song.

My local Salvation Army frequently tosses printers and PCs (and the
rare Mac they get in).
The Goodwill I work for (their overall, Regional I do believe, website
is mokangoodwill.org) will take in your old computers and peripherals
(fax machines too) but they don't sell them. Instead they package them
up and send them to be recycled by Dell. They might keep the rare,
nearly new laptop but all the rest is shipped off. I am TRYING to get
them to sell me an eMac but I lost out on a Smurf, a Quadra and a IIvx
that I really wanted.

But how many of you know of the Yahoo group Freecycle ?

I know about it.
I haven't used it but on the other hand, I have been given plenty of
older computers and peripherals by people I know.

Webcam Question

2009-10-31 Thread Stephen Conrad

OK, I have a webcam I want to try to set up (I seem to have lost the
connector to my digital camera so cannot use it)
The trouble is, I cannot find it online so I need some help.

It looks sorta like a space station (an orb in shape) and says STAR
WARS on the top.
It takes 4 AA batteries
On the back it says this:

C 2005 Hasbro
C 2005 Lucasfilm Ltd.
All Rights Reserved
Made in China C-031D

Rating: 6.0V (solid line over 3 dashes) (DC) 1.4W
Battery: 4x AA or LR6

{Area you plug it in}

  AV (symbol) Off On
CableDC IN 6V

Ideas? I can only find 2 Star Wars webcams.R2-D2 and Darth Vader's
TIE Fighter

Possibly, but probably not. That's quite close, but if it's a 4.5V battery,
it will not charge (you have to apply a higher voltage than the rated
 voltage to charge a battery.)

You really want to be careful when doing things like this, not only are
there issues of different voltages, but also polarity or whether it's AC or
 DC.

In general you can safely substitute adapters of the same voltage and
polarity of the required amperage or higher.

The battery says this one it

OLYMPUS

Batterypack 3.7V 109mAh

Does this tell you anything?

My Smurf sees the same usage (I really gotta get my iTunes stuff off of

My only other PMs (5400/180 and 5260/100) both have issues I have yet to

 recall).
If I get them working they'll be for games most likely

 What games are you playing?

Right now? I play two on Tagged.com (Mafia Wars and Sorority Wars) and two
on Facebook (Vampire Wars and Zombie Wars). I also play games on Pogo.com
(mostly Word Whomp!). But these I play using my Quicksilver.
When the older ones were being used I played Tetris, Despaire, Solitaire,
etc.
I have some on my older machines (SE FDHD, SE, Plus, IIsi, IIci) but they
are not being used right now.
I also play games on my ][e and //c

Due to my background I don't have even one single Mac game. I have a dozen
 DOS
games though, and I was wondering if I could play one of those on my new
 G4
 BW with 350 MHz.
So I installed DOSBox and launched my favorite game Ultima Underworld, but
 it
is unplayable on the G3 BW due to its performace. Works well on the
 Quicksilver and on the G5.

So I'm wondering: I _really don't_ wont to inverst any more money on this.
 I
already did too much for what I do with my older Macs.

Are there any free Mac games out there that will play nicely on my G3 BW?
 I'm
running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger if that matters.

There are several Mac FTP sites out there.
Find any FTP program or do a Google search for Mac FTP sites

Cam Question (well, sorta)

2010-01-28 Thread Stephen Conrad
I have a pair of binoculars that are also a digital camera
On one side they say Innovage Outdoor
On the top they say 10 X 25
 300 FT AT 1000 YDS

They take 2 AAA batteries and have some sort of plugin on the side (USB?)
that none of my USB cables fits properly

Anyone familiar with these? I took one pic for experimental purposes and I
want to DL it to see how it turned out.

Again, notice that these binoculars are listed in the Overstock.com

cameras an Macs. Since you've already installed Macam, if they work, they
work; if not, you're probably out of luck. Honestly, you can probably find a
Windows PC in the trash somewhere that will at least be able to off-load
your pictures from all these toy cameras, and then you can transfer them to
your Mac with a USB Flash stick or whatever networking you might be able to
setup from the PC to the Mac.

Well, I don't think all my cams are toys.
I have my Olympus, a Digital Concepts camera and my DXG-308.
I'll admit the 2 pink plastic ones are toys though. :)
I got all of these free at Goodwill so I am not complaining.

Does either program allow you to create a filter for the URL that the ad
originates from? That;s how Adblockplus in FF does it.
Or can you subscribe to a block list?

Hmmm, I don't know
I see it (that Zoosk ad) on the Quiz pages and it keeps you from clicking to

Check your JAVA installation. Is there more than one FF add-on for it? That
 happened to me.

What do you mean? I update Java when prompted to, otherwise I leave it

Java updates for some reason do not seem to delete older versions. Both

Where do I check to see if I have older ones?

Is Google.com in the whitelist for NoScript?

Adblock is oriented towards blocking ads, Google itself usess a large
Javascipt library, and so even their basic page has some javascript running.

What happens if you go to this page with Safari?

It could well just be a FF problem. Clear your cache, clear your history.

FWIW, I cannot reproduce any such script slow errors, even on my 300-MHz

Nope! I don't mess with the settings.
I rarely mess with my other add-ons unless I need to enter info (such as my

I just tried kextstat (kextstat | grep ADB) on one of my iBook G4s (OS

 com.apple.iokit.IOADBFamily

Trying it on my MBP (10.5.8) returned nothing with ADB in it.

If it doesn't mount as a USB mass storage device, (ie as a removable drive)
when you plug it in, there's probably no Mac driver. Do the usual 'Google
the device name that shows in System Profiler' route, if you don't find a
driver online that way, you're probably out of luck.

More and more of these cheap little devices are 'USB Mass Storage'
compatible, since this works better with WIn 7 and such, which means that
you get OSX and Linux compatibility free with 'em.

Still, Stephen, you have this uncanny ability to find Mac-incompatible
devices, don't you? :-) You have quite a pile of 'em by now...

When the stuff is GIVEN to me (ie it is free) I don't turn it down lest they
stop giving me free stuff. :)

I did a google search for Mini DPF KeyChain Photo Album Mac OSX but that
didn't help.
I didn't think to look in System Profile on my Mac. I just looked at the
Decktop and didn't see it.

Now that's not bad budgeting. I admire you, Jack. I wasn't interested

last as long as the manufacturer's new one I figure: Why not buy a new

The APC was showing odd signs I didn't consider until now, like it was
beeping sometimes and of course, the power has been going out a couple
 times every couple weeks.
Anyway, thank you! Lots more gardening ahead in my yard!

I have 2 UPS units I need to get batteries for.

I also have 4 APC Power Managers, but they are more like surge protectors I

Opera 10.53

2010-05-03 Thread Stephen Conrad
OK, my Mac: G4 Quicksilver running OS X 10.4.11
Opera prompted me that an upgrade was available so I grabbed it.
Now Opera won't work
I sent the Error to Apple and have been looking at Opera's site trying to
find the System Requirements for this version of Opera to no avail. Several
other sites discussing it have also not had the system requirements listed.
Will this version work on this machine?

According to this it should work, although notice it comes in both a

It didn't launch for me on a PPC G5 with 10.5.8.

Strangely, it DID launch from the mounted .dmg, but not when it's been
 copied to Applications.

I saw these messages in Console when I attempt to launch from Applications:

 5/3/10 1:57:40 AM com.apple.launchd[206]

 ...): Permission denied

For me, the solution was to go to:

/Users/~/Library/Caches/ and trash the Opera folder. Once I trashed this
cache file, it launched normally for me.

You may also have Preferences folders that could be causing problems,
 they'd be in:

 /Users/~/Library/Preferences

I trashed them both but it still won't launch
Even from the mounted .dmg it won't launch.

What's wrong with Safari or Firefox?

Nothing. I have them both.
Safari's main issue is that it keeps that damn loading thing (it is where
you see the RSS logo in the address bar) in Gmail unless you hit 'Stop'.
Mind you it is not happening all the time but it is annoying.

Firefox is nice and I have used it a long tiime. Finally found a way to not
have it crash on occasion (don't let it look for updates to your add-ons, do
that yourself from time to time).

I noticed I could not use Chrome anyway (needs a newer OS and it said 'Intel
only'

I downloaded Camino and will see what it is like.

However, Safari seems to becoming unresponsive (Application Not Responding)

 use WebKit Nightly and ClickToFlash...

2 GB virtual. You've had Safari running long enough that it's leaked that
 hard. Quit and relaunch it.

Either quit and relaunch Safari more often or switch to WebKit Nightly - it
 leaks less.

While Safari is this big, how much free space is available on your boot

Well, either this isn't it or there's something different about your
 Safari.

Mine doesn't display anything, but it doesn't freeze up. Safari 4.04 on OS
 X 10.6.

Safari 4.05 on OS X 10.4.11
That page is always the last one (ie at the top of the list) in History
after I restart Safari when it decides to stop responding.
No updates for Safari when I last checked (but always an iTunes update)

Just updated mine to 4.0.5 and same results. It doesn't do anything, but it
doesn't freeze up the system. I suspect that's the last valid loaded page,
the one that's causing the problem never gets into the history list.

Try deleting all your cache and history?

hum. Good formatting. Great example of why HTML email should not be used

Mozilla dropping Tiger suport / implications for NoScript?

Anyway, as far as I can tell, Tiger support will be dropped in Firefox 3.7,
so even NoScript 2.x will support it for a long time (as long as it supports
Firefox 3.6).

USB Question

2010-05-13 Thread Stephen Conrad
For the longest time I ran my digital camera off the left-hand USB pot on my
KB (mouse runs off the other one)
Today when I plugged the camera into the cord (which I leave plugged in) I
got a Low Power Warning.
Why is this? What could have changed?

Most cameras not only transfer data but also recharge the battery via USB.

  What could have changed?

The battery is lower on charge, and is drawing more amperage than before.
The limit is 500mA total per USB port unless you have an external USB hub
with its own power supply. I've seen this message before using a USB memory
stick to a keyboard port. Since the USB memory stick doesn't draw
significant power, this might be an error specific to keyboard ports that
you can safely ignore, at least that's what I did.

This camera uses 3 AAA batteries and I have regular old alkaline cells in
it .

And, so as not to double post

I did move it to a powered 4 port USB hub.
It is connected but this time it didn't trigger Image Capture (asking me
what I wanted to DL)

You might want to check this to be sure which is right for your
camera. I have several small Sony cameras that use AAA NiMH
rechargeable batteries. I think if you use AAA alkaline cells in a
camera meant to use NiMH you'll get into problems, they're different
voltage, 2.2v for NiMH and 2.5v for alkaline. If you try to recharge
an alkaline that could be bad too, they leak or worse under attempted
  recharge.

 Very true Kris.
I have two digital Kodaks that according to the manual need rechargeables
that are rated 2000mAh or better but I find I need to use 2200mAh or better
to make them work properly - they refuse to recognise any form of alkalines.
I ended up buyng a bunch of 2500mAh and they work like a charm.

This is an older Digital Concepts camera
I don't know if it requires NiNH (or NiCad)

Also the Mac keyboard ports are lower power than normal, because
they're an unpowered hub. I've seen some older USB flash drives
 produce that warning.

There is a maximum of 500mA available from a powered port (on the computer
or a powered hub). Each device is allocated a minimum of 100mA. The hub
inside the keyboard, the keyboard itself, the mouse and the camera are
likely each requesting the minimum of 100mA so that's a total of 400 mA
allocated. That leaves 100mA still available so this problem SHOULDN'T be
happening. If the keyboard is plugged into an unpowered hub you could get
 this problem.

USB is in many ways a well thought out specifications but the
 implementation frequently falls short.

I have seen some USB devices that request 500mA regardless of what they
need. I suspect the programmers were just being lazy.
