is pretty slow
to boot from but in a pinch it works. If your backup was done with
Time Machine then it's not bootable.
If you want to see if your backup is bootable, you can choose the boot
drive by holding down the option key at startup.

Is it kosher? It was going to defrag and my understanding
is that Macs don't need defragging.
He also wants admin privileges for his Mac. I say no cuz
I want to vet any software he gets it into his head to install.

Although your description of activities might have done something too.
Sometimes there's no explanation except that computers do strange
things. Fortunately with the Macs, most of the time they're fine.

the DVR-112 and newer improved their ability to read
scratched discs. I've seen the improvement from the 111 to the 112,
and I was impressed.

the place to no avail. What happens
is (1) if I leave the machine by itself, the screen saver goes on but
sleep never takes over, (2) if I manually put to sleep it wakes up 2
seconds later.
Any more ideas or should I just forget it and try the upgrade?
