Re: [Audyssey] Last bit of help

2011-08-08 Thread Bryan Peterson
It's going to take more houses. Your people won't start having children
until there's enough places for them to live. So with fourteen people you
need at least four houses before they start having cildren. And again,
they'll only have as many children as the number of houses will support. So
once the number of people has reached the max number that the four houses,
let's say, will support, no more kids. If you want more you need to build
more houses. The more people you want to have the more houses you need to
build.

Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, disappearing upgrades.

2011-08-08 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Well that shouldn't have happened, so I've added this to my list of bugs to
find. I'm strongly considering tearing out the job upgrade code, and writing
it again from scratch. I can see several places where it is a little thrown
together, and any one of them could be the hiding place for this bug.

I had a chef and a second serf that
have been downgraded back to their basic
state.  This seems to have happened when I changed
 from 1.4b to 1.5b.  I
think that I had some tomes made when I made the
 switch.  I used these to
upgrade my cook and peasant, but when I saved and reloaded
 the game, these
upgrades had vanished.  Does this have something to do
 with the change in
how tomes work with the leatherworker addition?

[Audyssey] New area opening on Alter Aeon

2011-08-08 Thread Dennis Towne
This weekend, we opened a large high level area on Alter Aeon - it's
an extension to the Hades Castle near Olympus on the mainland. It's a
very high level zone, so if you've got a high level character you
might want to join up with a group to go run through it. Here's the
official announcement from the area builder:

+++

The priests of Glorida have been attempting to gain access to Hades
Castle for hundreds of years without success. This past week the
priests discovered a previously unknown secret to which they used to
gain access to the top floor of Hades Castle. The priests have deemed
it very dangerous to enter this area, however, have left it open for
all to enter. The priests continue to work hard to gain access to the
remainder of the castle, however at this time have not been able to
find the proper incantation.

The priests indicate the Hades Castle is located just past the river
Styx in the city of the twelve gods.

Feel free to explore the area that has been discovered, however, it is
extremely dangerous and you may want to bring some friends along.

+++

We hope you enjoy it!

Re: [Audyssey] getting a emulator for the blind.

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I could be wrong, but I thought Dracula is pretty much public domain now so
if you wanted him as an enemy you could have him, though i freely admit I
may be wrong here.

Then again, no need to redo things and you could have lots of fun with an
evil wizard instead, especially in terms of story sequences and maybe your
hero gaining some magic powers, maybe even with extra characters thrown into
the mix, eg, maybe the wizard has a right hand man who's out for power, or
has disolutioned someone else into helping him.

There is also the possibility of using a real world historical figure as a
basis, rather the way that Dracula was based on Vlad dracule the hungarian
prince.

For instance, have paraselsus, or elifus levi, and say that they really did!
discover the elexia of life, but that it involved undeath instead.

Re: [Audyssey] are there any blind games where people can go on quests and play with other players on line?

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

When my phd is finished, that's actually one of the things I think I'd
considder learning to do, sinse it's something I've always wanted to see,
and gamebooks are very popular at the moment.

I like the sapi program idea, though my concern is including and making it
accessible to sited players, which would obviously involve readable text at
least, and maybe one or two static images the way Sryth has, eg, a dropdown
menue of directions, but with pointing arrow graphics.

As I said earlier, there is evidence that many people are playing gamebooks,
text games like Sryth, muds (even those without a gui), asci graphic games
like rogue and angband and of course net rpgs like Sryth.

that however would be my conern with a downloadable program, sinse it's not
as immediate to other people as a mud or text game, but obviously this is a
debate we've already had.

For instance, currently the status just says when someone is batling goblins
and what square, perhaps like peasants carrying it could be updated to
going to rest at guard tower or D7 or whatever.

thus, it'd be easier to know if more guard towers are actually effective or
not.

Re: [Audyssey] cast way help

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi Michael.

the simple answer is you don't make! them do anything.

The people in castaways are all inteligent enough to get on with whatever
job you assign them to do (see the jobs guide for a list).

So to build your storehouse, you need peasants to carry the materials to the
building site, and once you've got everything there, builders to do the
actual building.

All your people start out as builders, which means they'll also be peasants
when there is no building to do, so they'll bring material automatically,
and then build, though you might want to make some of them full time
peasants as well as you always need peasants to fetch and carry and do other
vital work like grinding grane into flour.

When you build a tavern, you can assign a cook, who will dish food out
automatically, and to get lumber, build a sawmill and assign a lumberjack to
chop logs and a carpenter to cut the logs into lumber.

All the other jobs work this way, so the skill you have is assigning people
to the right jobs and insuring you've got enough people doing each job to
get the work you want done.

I just started to play this game. I think it is very interesting but I have
one of the easiest question for everyone but me.

I am trying to make my store room and I switch some of the people to be
peasants etc. My question is how do I make them actually do something.
Every

time I check they are just standing around.

Should I at first make all of them peasants or how should I do that?

Re: [Audyssey] Cast Aways Help

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi Michael.

First, you need to build the storeroom, otherwise there will be no where for
fishermen to bring fish, hunters to bring kills lumberjacks to bring logs
etc.
so, find a place on the map and hit enter on it to bring up the list of
buildings and select storehouse.

Your peasants will then bring material to the storehouse, and your builders
will build it when all the materials needed are there.

After you have a storehouse, you can then create fishermen and hunters and
they'll get on with their jobs, though also remember to create a tavern and
make someone a cook otherwise people will not be able to eat even if there
is food at your storehouse (the cook is the most important job).

After that you can get on and build other things like farms, saw mill,
quarry etc and start gathering building materials, and increasing your
population by building houses.

Re: [Audyssey] Follow up on cast away

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi michael.

it sounds to me like you didn't have any builders.

You don't really need lumberjacks sinse you can't use logs until you have a
sawmill and a carpenter to chop them into lumber anyway.

When you start, you begin with everyone as builders. I'd recommend perhaps
creating one fisherman and one hunter, then letting your builders get on
with building the storehouse.

After that, assign some people to be full time peasants, and build the
tavern (close to the storehouse), your remaining builders will be peasantst
the rest of the time, but you want to make sure your basic fetching and
carrying is stil being done even when your builders are busy building.

After you've built the tavern, assign a cook.

Now you can field your people, gather supplies from the beach, and your
fishermen and hunters can take their meet somewhere to be used. Then you can
go on to building farms to keep your food supply stable (I recommend
starting with a vedgitable farm), and a sawmill andquarry to make certain
you keep getting bricks and lumber.

Re: [Audyssey] custaways light lunch survival game

2011-08-08 Thread dark

Hi steady.

I've actually found light lunch to be one of the least bad faults, sinse it
only means people are hungry at the start and once you've got your farms and
fishing going your pretty much set.

i usually build a vedge farm before the quarry and sawmill, and that seems
to solve the problem very well.

in general I think light lunch is the easy option where faults are
concerned, sinse it has even less effect on the hole game than dogfood.

compared to vegitarian, cosy or all thumbs, starting a litle hungry isn't
too bad at all.

Re: [Audyssey] guard tower

2011-08-08 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I would think people would get irritated with the extra messages, but if others
agree that this information would be helpful, I can add it to my list of things
to add.

Oh and yes, there will be 2 more military units added in mission 3.

 Hi Jeremy.

maybe if we are going to have more military units in the
game, we could see where people were and thus position guard
 towers more effectively.

For instance, currently the status just says when someone
is batling goblins and what square, perhaps like peasants
carrying it could be updated to going to rest at guard
 tower or D7 or whatever.

thus, it'd be easier to know if more guard towers are
 actually effective or not.

Re: [Audyssey] castaways

2011-08-08 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Jorge, castaways is a strategy game where you build up a settlement and manage
your population so they don't starve to death or get killed by enemies. The
game can be found on this website:
www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/
Unlike sound RTS, this game focuses more on macro management instead of micro
management. You don't control your individual people, but rather assign tasks
and your people perform them more like how things work in real life. In real
life leader would decide what projects needed to be done, but he wouldn't go up
to each individual person and command them to do each thing. It's a different
way of playing a game than you usually find, so some people will like it, and
others won't.
Nocturnus created an audio walkthrough that should be very helpful to new
players. It is worth taking a listen to.
www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/nocturnus/castaways.mp3

Thank you  very much for the
 correction.
But I actually asked about the game, not the title of the
 game.
Anyways thank you very much for the detailed information
 that you gave me.
 Cheers,
 Jorge Gonçalves

Re: [Audyssey] Congrats on mota 21

2011-08-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

I have no intentions of taking the beta down. Although, I'm working on
beta 22 which addresses some minor issues and bugs found in beta 21.
So by Sunday there will probably be a new beta there. However, that
all depends on a personal family situation though.

Just to let people know Sunday night I was informed that my grandma
was admitted to the hospital, and it doesn't look good. So with that
in mind I may not have a lot of free time to deal with USA Games stuff
this week as I may be out of town to visit my grandma in the hospital,
or possibly worse if she doesn't make it. So this definitely isn't a
good time for beta testing as any plans I might have had for MOTA beta
22 just went out the window last night.

Re: [Audyssey] are there any blind games where people can go on quests and play with other players on line?

2011-08-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Right. A text format is definitely the universal constant when it
comes to maximum accessibility for blind and sighted gamers. Thanks to
the classic Infocom text adventures and on line RPG gamebooks like
Sryth I've grone to be quite a fan of text based game play myself, and
of course as you say there is a pretty healthy following of mainstream
gamers who still play text games. Plus as a rule text based games are
fairly simple in design, and for that reason they can be played on
Mac, Linux, and Windows PCs without all the complex dependencies that
goes with a more complex game like Mysteries of the Ancients.

Its for reasons like that why I still haven't settled on a specific
design for my own RPG games. I have lots of good story ideas for an
RPG, but it is the technical/design aspect that has me wondering on
how to do it. Part of the problem with having taken lots of CS
courses, learning several programming languages, is that I'm presented
with too many choices and options.

First, you've got your on line gamebook/RPG adventure like Sryth. A
project like that probably uses html for the basic web pages, a
scripting language like php or Perl for the actual game coding, and
some SQL using a MySQL database for storing account information and
game stats.

Second, you have your server based game. A developer like myself
writes a game, places it on a server, and then creates a client that
logs in and plays it.

Finally, there is the stand alone game written in C++, Java, Python,
C@#.net, or VB.net that is the same basic game but in a single player
form that is downloaded to the PC.

All of these are good choices, but the way the internet is growing I
think an on line game would probably make more money than an off line
game would. People are funny about paying say $20 for a stand alone
text based RPG that they download to their computer, but wouldn't
think anything of slapping down $20 for a years subscription to an on
line RPG like Sryth even though the off line and on line game are
identical. Go figure.

Cheers!

As I said earlier, there is evidence that many people are playing gamebooks,

Re: [Audyssey] are there any blind games where people can go on quests and play with other players on line?

2011-08-08 Thread shaun everiss
tom I to like text games, especially if they can display in the
command line natively, ie they are command line based games written
to display in a dos like environment but are not actually dos games.

I have not as yet found a good dos emulator for windows.
and either have to use vertual focus or something like that.
Ok I could get a free dos reader like jaws or hal lite, but the fact
there is no external synth or in fact any serial ports anymore on any
of my wrigs makes that point mute as heck.
Now if we could get some sort of dos screenreader or even a command
line reader for windows which could read dos programs or something
maybe have a dos shell which looks like dos but is actually a windows
native command line program.
Which has all the features of windows command line to the user but
all games think its dos.
Better yet if you could set games to run at a spaciffic speed for
whatever then that would rock.
Now the only ways I think I can do this is with either an external
synth which I don't have and I don't even have the ports, linux with
dosemu which is quite old or a dos computer.
Its doubtfull I will ever get a native dos computer and since dosbox
is totally crap for us I have the command line and maybe text languages.
The only real pluss is that for some reason agt for dos any version
will natively run for here.
OFcause I don't get all the keys released to the terminal for
example del, arrow keys back space and a few others.
I wouldn't mind an emulator even if it was just crappy sapi, espeak
or just supported nvda with the right viewing options.

As I said earlier, there is evidence that many people are playing
gamebooks,

text games like Sryth, muds (even those without a gui), asci graphic games
like rogue and angband and of course net rpgs like Sryth.

that however would be my conern with a downloadable program, sinse it's not
as immediate to other people as a mud or text game, but obviously this is a
 debate we've already had.

 Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] getting a emulator for the blind.

2011-08-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yes, Count Dracula is public domain, but a character like Simon
Belmont is not. The Belmont family is strictly tied to the Castlevania
storyline and is copyrighted. So assuming I did a Castlevania clone
there would still be elements I'd have to change. Although, that's not
really the issue here.

It has more to do with trying to branch out and create something
equally enjoyable, but that is my own creation. I'm beginning to
realise that although cloning a favorite game can be rewarding and fun
its also something of a pain too for a number of reasons.

First, there is the almighty copyright problem. As I intend to sell my
games to cover the expense of buying sounds, purchasing music,
licensing voices, etc needed I have to be careful about how much
copyrighted content I can legally use without it coming back to haunt
me. Since that is the case I can't just pick a game I like such as
Castlevania and clone it down to the smallest detail. So whatever I
make won't be the same game as the original anyway.

Second, is the purest vs casual player view. I remember when I was
trying to make a fairly close clone of Montezuma's Revenge there were
plenty of people who didn't like this, didn't like that, wanted this
or that changed, and I was constantly put in the position of deciding
to be a purest or not. I didn't like being put in that position
because there are strong pros and cons from both sides of the
argument.

A purest like myself wants a game to be as close to the original as
possible. Anything else isn't the same game, and perhaps loses some
special quality the original had. That's why I was considering making
Montezuma's Revenge as close to the original as possible.

A contemperary player has no issues with changing elements in said
game because perhaps they never played the original. Therefore they
may compare the game to newer games they played, feel it lacks some
feature game x has, and will ask for different features than the
original game had. There's certainly nothing wrong with updating a
game to a certain point, but the question is, where should we draw
the line between necessary updates and maintaining origionality?

Finally, there is the matter of creativity. A lot of writers fall back
on existing universes Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc because
it saves them a lot of work creating a unique storyline, characters,
etc on their own. I call this the sandbox approach to creative
writing, because they are basing their work on someone else's ideas
and building up from their. The fan fiction websites are filled with
writers, some good and some bad, who like to play in someone else's
back yard so to speak. That's not necessarily bad, but its not
engaging their own ability to create something new and original.

Well, that's the difference here. Sure I could make a career of
cloning and copying game ideas like Tomb Raider, Castlevania, Megaman,
etc all my life, but that's still like playing in theirback yard. I'm
beginning to think more in terms of perhaps trying something new, and
put my mind to work to creating something that's totally my own
creation for a change from start to finish. I can certainly do it as
I'm capable of doing some original creative writing on my own.

What a lot of people probably don't know about me is that from roughly
age 14 on I use to spend many many hours writing short stories. Some
were certainly based on existing universes like Star Trek, Star Wars,
etc, but I also did a fair amount of my own creative writing. I'm not
saying it was very good at that age, but I did get some creative
writing awards in high school so I guess you could say I have some
creative writing skill. So now instead of writing 50 to 100 page short
stories I can apply that creative monster to games. Which is kind of
better as its more interactive than reading something I wrote.
Although, I've certainly thought about getting back into the creative
writing thing as well.

Cheers!

Hi.
If you're referring to Mission Two of Castaways, the objective is to destroy
the yetti so you can then move to the mountains.
Good luck.

Re: [Audyssey] custaways light lunch survival game

2011-08-08 Thread Steady Goh
Hi Dark, I think so too that's why I chose light lunch. On hard difficulty
before my tavern is up, some of them are already starving. That's how I came
out with that little survival game. One of these days I will try to carry on
with the game with those 5 survivals and see how far I can go.
then I have to get my population back up...pragnent can't work means left
with 4 or maybe 3 working...food, resources, and defence also have to be up
early because goblins are much faster...hmm...how am I going to get through
this?!! haha!

Hi steady.

I've actually found light lunch to be one of the least bad faults, sinse
it only means people are hungry at the start and once you've got your
farms and fishing going your pretty much set.

i usually build a vedge farm before the quarry and sawmill, and that seems
to solve the problem very well.

in general I think light lunch is the easy option where faults are
concerned, sinse it has even less effect on the hole game than dogfood.

compared to vegitarian, cosy or all thumbs, starting a litle hungry isn't
too bad at all.

A simple little game I'm having fun trying out...following is the
configuration

starter: anything other than strong start
1st perk: anything other than union smasher
second perk: any thing other than strong swimmer and pack rack
fault: light lunch
difficulty: hard
mission 1, default map.
How many people can survive to have their meal at this initial stage and
not die of starvation?
