Hi Rick,
Sure. The game is available on the Interactive Fiction Archive. Go to
www.ifarchive.org, navigate to the games/pc directory, and there'll be a
file named fallthru.zip. That's the game. The one thing which might
confuse you is that the ifarchive links aren't quite as friendly as they
might be. They all start with ifarchive on every page. So it'll be
something like if-archive/games, and on the next page
ifarchive/games/pc
Hope this helps,
Zack.

This has been going on for over a month.
Does anybody know another place I can get the game?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Dark,
One thing which might help this situation of having to remember the
order of columns is if Hal has any way to assign a custom highlight
attribute or something similarly worded. The selected item is usually
highlighted in a different color from all the rest.
Hope this helps,
Zack.
On Sun, Jan 17, 2010 at 09:49:59AM -0800, Christopher Bartlett wrote:

When you enter the fleet window, you are positioned on the fighters
column. Remember, there are two rows, the upper is the fleet, the
bottom is the source of ships, i.e. a planet or another fleet. Hitting
up-arrow transfers all available ships or resources to the fleet, down
transfers all to the source. Use the right arrow to go across the
columns. If you hit enter, you can type in a specific number, such as
500 and hit enter again to set the number. The columns are in the
following order, which you pretty much have to just memorize:
fighters
hunter-killers
jump ships
jump transports
penetrators
star ships
transports
men
ninjas
ambrosia
chemicals
metals
supplies
trilium

In the Windows version, you can't scroll to the right column by going
left from the left, so you'll have to go all the way across with arrow
keys.

I haven't played in quite a while, so I hope I've remembered things
correctly.

2010-01-18 Thread Rhonda Scott
Our sighted 10 year old son enjoys having us play games on the Wii with him,
but I get frustrated because with bowling, for instance, as you mentioned, I
don't know which pins are still standing, and Deven has to aim for me so I
can have a shot at knocking down the rest. We play Wii sports with him
sometimes because it makes him happy, but I get easily frustrated playing
games where someone has to do practically everything for me except the
movements. So perhaps there are other Wii games more accessible for
completely blind players. The boxing one is kind of fun because some of the
sounds alert you to which player is getting their butt kicked, and once the
round begins you just do your best to box all areas of your opponent's body.

I've heard some game reviews about this game console that said that the
games are accessible, only to find out that the games cannot be accurately
played. For example, how can you tell what pins remain standing after you
roll your first ball in bowling? How do you know where to aim on any shot?
I don't want to guess or to have a pretty good idea. I want to actually
know, before I bowl, what I am aiming at, and where it is. The same goes
for tennis or any of the other games. I want skill, not luck, to be the

Re: [Audyssey] C++ Development And JFW 11

2010-01-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Harmony,
Just for future reference I have a game developers list on my web site
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/lists.php
where you might be able to get more help on these types of questions.
The Audyssey list isn't really the appropriate list for these types of
questions although I'll try and answer your question since I've said
this much. Smile.
When you started Visual C++ you have to create a new project. I assume
you picked either the Win32 Windows or Win32 Console application project
solution. If not you need to create one before you can begin programming
anything.
Once you have a project there are two modes the editor can be in.
Design view which means you can drag and drop tools from the toolbox
onto your form such as buttons, labels, timers, text boxes etc. The
other view is edit view which allows you to edit your code. If you are
writing a Win32 Console application it is always set to edit view. You
can toggle between edit and design view in Windows projects by pressing
f7 while in the file you are working on.
Finally, when you start a new project you might not have any files
opened in the editor. You can open and select project files by using the
solution explorer. To open a file go to view, solution explorer, and you
will be taken to a tree view of your entire project. Find the file you
want to open/edit and presss enter. You should then be either in the
edit view or design view depending on the type of project or file you
are working on. If the editor isn't open use f7 to switch the view
between design/edit view to work on the source.

Unless you're a pro at keeping your hand steady and in the same place
everytime memorizing the placement of the menus won't help because you might
hold the controller in a different spot the next time and that thing is
delicate like I said in another post I spent 2 hours trying to find the menu
option on the screen so I could start playing my game. Wii Sports resort is
pretty much accessible once you get in to it, cause you can arrow around the
options, just memorize where they are, you don't need any help with the
bowling really except for on the second frame of each game so some can tell
you where to move to hit your pins. Basketball on the wii resort game is all
accessible as is the frisby and sword fighting, also canoeing is fun too.
Another game you might check out, again already seaid this once, is
dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, the menus talk and it's a 3d fighting
game, so it's fun plus you have to use the motion sensor to do their special
moves and such, all that takes is someone reading it to you a couple of
times, eventually you can play that game pretty independently with no help
whatsoever including the online play. But if you are going for completely
accessible for the most part then don't get a wii, get a ps3 or a 360 ast
your preference, personally, I prefer ps3 because in the end it has the
better processor, better graphic, better gameplay, and most importantly,
better sound. Plus the online play on ps3 is free and you have to pay for
xbox live.

If you are the only person in the room, can you play the games with
accuracy? If not, then it is not accessible in my opinion.

I often play Wii Sports Bowling with my sighted folks. The only thing they
have to do is tell me where to aim by telling me how many clicks to move the
D-pad in a given direction to aim. I do everything myself and my folks just
direct me. Then I play Wii Fit. My mom or dad makes the menu selectsions of
course but I do everything else.

Our sighted 10 year old son enjoys having us play games on the Wii with
 him,
but I get frustrated because with bowling, for instance, as you mentioned,
 I
don't know which pins are still standing, and Deven has to aim for me so I
can have a shot at knocking down the rest. We play Wii sports with him
sometimes because it makes him happy, but I get easily frustrated playing
games where someone has to do practically everything for me except the
movements. So perhaps there are other Wii games more accessible for
completely blind players. The boxing one is kind of fun because some of
 the
sounds alert you to which player is getting their butt kicked, and once
 the
round begins you just do your best to box all areas of your opponent's
 body.

I've heard some game reviews about this game console that said that the
games are accessible, only to find out that the games cannot be accurately
played. For example, how can you tell what pins remain standing after you
roll your first ball in bowling? How do you know where to aim on any
 shot?
I don't want to guess or to have a pretty good idea. I want to actually
know, before I bowl, what I am aiming at, and where it is. The same goes
for tennis or any of the other games. I want skill, not luck, to be the
determining factor in how well I play. As far as that goes, I want this
 in
 any game I play.

I enjoy the game a lot and I normally have had problems with very complex

Hi,
Agreed. In all respects Q9 is a classic 80's type side-scroller similar to
Donkey Kong and some of the later Pitfall games. Things like level editors
etc need not apply here. This is exactly one of the aspects where I ran into
problems with Mysteries of the Ancients.
I started out writing a traditional side-scroller along the lines of
Montezuma's Revenge, and I was bombarded with requests for level editors,
save game features, random monsters, random items, etc. After a while as I
added features and updates the game ceased to be what I initially had
planned to create in the first place. In the end I've been very disappointed
in the product while others constantly say how much they enjoy it. Kind of a
paradox disliking the very game others like.
However, that situation was caused by trying to please everyone else except
myself. I don't want to see Philip make this mistake as well.
Anyway, in my personal opinion adding level editors and such to Q9 would
ruin the classic arcade game feel. The reason I like this game so well is it
reminds me of the type of games I played in my younger years. Sure it has
some modern aspects like random items, random monsters, etc but that
enhances rather than detracts from the game. The game is very adictive and
has a high amount of replay value for me right now. That's all that counts
in my opinion.

dark wrote:
while more traps would be nice if possible, maybe themed traps
for the levels, I seriously don't see what good an editer would do in
a game where everything is randomized, sinse I assume the principle
differences betwene the levels are the types and frequency rates of
enemies, pits and items, and their length.

I don't see how playing with these factors in an editer would really
do anything more than the current game is doing already.

 Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Elite was RE: classic games

2010-01-18 Thread Jacob Kruger
I think I actually liked the farpoint one, but to be honest, I can't really
remember the names too much - main thing I remember is the fact that you
could do some real 3D flying, and it was amazing to see the action on the
screen, but at the same time make use of the navigation interface etc. to
try find things.

Only other sort of flight simulator programs ever really spent much time
on/really liked where a silly little 2D one called BlueMax, where you flyed
a sopwith camel around bombing and doing simple dogfights - thanks Jim for
winpuppy since it honestly reminds me of that one - and another one called
something like B52, or dambusters, where you were meant to fly in avoiding
anti aircraft fire, fighter planes, and end up bombing a dam, and this one
was sort of based around WWII.

Yeah I managed to complete that so quickly. Well do the 5 missions. What
was

your favourite one? The thargoid station was so boring. But the documents
mission when you had to transport those military documents with regards to
the thargoid ships that was a difficult one. Because boy did you have to
kill a lot of those things and you couldn't missile them or energy bomb
them! If there was ever a hard mission I think that was it. For me that

the most difficult of them all. The cloaked ship was easy lol in

2010-01-18 Thread Darren Harris
Yeah my favourite games were elite then first encounters when that came out,
I really did enjoy getting a panther clipper, filling up the hold with
shield generators, the more you had the better protected you were, then I'd
take off from a planet, then I'd cut the engines. Bouncing round on the
planets surface was just so fun!

The other game or series of games that I like is the x series. As in
x-beyond the fronteer, x-tention, x-2 the threat x-3 reunion and x-conflict
which I haven't ventured into yet.

I often play Wii Sports Bowling with my sighted folks. The only thing they
have to do is tell me where to aim by telling me how many clicks to move
the
D-pad in a given direction to aim. I do everything myself and my folks
just
direct me. Then I play Wii Fit. My mom or dad makes the menu selectsions

Our sighted 10 year old son enjoys having us play games on the Wii with
him,
but I get frustrated because with bowling, for instance, as you
mentioned,

I
don't know which pins are still standing, and Deven has to aim for me so
I

can have a shot at knocking down the rest. We play Wii sports with him
sometimes because it makes him happy, but I get easily frustrated playing
games where someone has to do practically everything for me except the
movements. So perhaps there are other Wii games more accessible for
completely blind players. The boxing one is kind of fun because some of
the
sounds alert you to which player is getting their butt kicked, and once
the
round begins you just do your best to box all areas of your opponent's
body.

I've heard some game reviews about this game console that said that the
games are accessible, only to find out that the games cannot be
accurately
played. For example, how can you tell what pins remain standing after
you

roll your first ball in bowling? How do you know where to aim on any
shot?
I don't want to guess or to have a pretty good idea. I want to actually
know, before I bowl, what I am aiming at, and where it is. The same goes
for tennis or any of the other games. I want skill, not luck, to be the
determining factor in how well I play. As far as that goes, I want this
in
any game I play.

It was the first such game, also it had what was considdered at the time to
be a realistic 3D flying and combat environment, which was very different.

According to a friend of mine who's a big fan of the game, there is an open
source more modern version which basically is the original game with add ons
such as the ability to actually buy a new ship as well as just trade in.

Sadly though I've never had enough eyeballs to play it myself, games
like smugglers and core exiles are about as close as I could get
unfortunately.

[Audyssey] Accessible PS3 Games

2010-01-18 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
I recently bought a PS3 console. Originally I bought it for the
DVD/Blue-Ray capabilities. Now I begin to wonder what games I might be able
to play with it.

I love board and card games, and would love a role-playing game that I could
play. I'm not into sports games at all.

I'm willing to try other types of games as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi, Thomas,

Card games? How do I find them? Every time I look for Games in Windows 7,
I keep finding the HP games, which don't look terribly accessible.

But if we can find an accessible Windows card game or two, I'd love to give
them a try.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-18 Thread Charles Rivard
I have come up with the same result on my laptop. Spy Bot search and
destroy or AVG antivirus 9 gave a warning that the file contains a trojan
and does not allow the download. My problem is that Jim's games do not
speak using any SAPI voice, although OpenBook 9 speaks fine using the SAPI
voices. The voices I have been trying are the ones that came with an
earlier version of JAWS. Scan Soft Tom is my favorite choice from these.
It does work with other applications. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling
Jim's games with the same result. I also tried uninstalling the SAPI
voices, only to get a message that a later version of the voices has been
installed, so these could not be uninstalled.

Re: [Audyssey] BG Hearts and Other Games

2010-01-18 Thread Nancy (Loravara)
Thanks to you and Jacob both. I just sent Ian an Email.

Will these work under Windows 7? Do I need to do anything special to make
them work?

And ... on his Web site he talks about text to speech voices, and how Sam
isn't the best of voices. What TTS voices does Windows 7 come with? How do
I install others? How do I find out which voices I have?

I apologize; I am a very new Windows 7 user. I tried to find a Speech tab
under Control Panel, but the layout is definitely different for Control
Panel now. If anyone can walk me through how to configure Windows 7 better
for JAWS 11, I'd be delighted to learn (or point me at a link that can set
me straight).

Thanks again for your help.

2010-01-18 Thread dark
Have you tried using the link scanner and resident shield buttons in avg,
then disabling those features while you run the file from kitchinsinc?

That certainly worked for me, as did creating an exception folder when
I installed night of parasite.

I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling

Jim's games with the same result. I also tried uninstalling the SAPI
voices, only to get a message that a later version of the voices has been
installed, so these could not be uninstalled.

This is just to check. Someone on the entombed list has been having

Windows 7 comes with microsoft Anna - and she's not bad at all.

Unfortunately I'm not on my windows 7 machine at the moment, but seems best
to try typing different things in the search box on the start menu, and then

You could either try the word speech, or something like TTS.

And ... on his Web site he talks about text to speech voices, and how Sam

I apologize; I am a very new Windows 7 user. I tried to find a Speech tab

Re: [Audyssey] kitchinsinc speech fix virused?

2010-01-18 Thread Kai

Greetings Dark et al.

The file probably isn't a virus. I encountered this very problem, downloaded
the same file from multiple sources and got the same virus warnings from
Avira. I did, however, take a chance on running the code (One of the
download sites was, after all, GW Micro). I've not experienced any ill
effects, and it did indeed fix my SAPI issue. I'm fairly sure that it isn't
a Trojan, based on my experiences.

This is just to check. Someone on the entombed list has been having
trouble with sapi, but when we suggested the fix file on Jim's site to
reset things it came up as unsave.

I checked myself, and Avg also said it was a trogeon.

I'd appreciate knowing if this is just security paranoyer, or
whether Jim actually has a problematic file (though I suspect it is! just
paranoyer).

kill a lot of those things and you couldn't missile them or energy bomb

the most difficult of them all. The cloaked ship was easy lol in comparison

the only things you could energy bomb.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible PS3 Games

well the only games we really can play are sports, games like mortal combat
with fists etc and things with comentary.
I know urbain rain is one of these and some of the marvel vs dc universe type.
Racing games should work fine.
I have played starwars with a cousin and the main part with a team is usable
but you couldn't do much by yourself and when I say team it only works in a
space battle.

play. I'm not into sports games at all.

I'm willing to try other types of games as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used to use avg and it did the same thing the file in guaranteed safe,
unless you don't know wehre they file is coming from, in this case you do,
then don't download it. If you do know where it's coming from you know there
is nothing to worry about, and if you do get a virus then avg will remove it
even if you told it to ignore the file in the first place. So, short answer
there is no Trojans in jims files.

well if you go to ftp://onj1.andrelouis.com, click on programs you can find ms
anna for xp.
how he got that lagit is not known, but the install is for ms english tts.
At 11:43 a.m. 19/01/2010, you wrote:

You could either try the word speech, or something like TTS.

2010-01-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark and all,
For some reason most antivirus programs I have tried always flag
delusr.exe as a virus/trojan. However, I've downloaded and ran the file
several times without problems. So I think it is just paranoia on part
of the antivirus programs out there. As it happens I grabbed a copy off
another web site, and got the same virus warning. So there is obviously
something up with that file that trips the antivirus programs. However,
I've never experienced any problems running it.

delusr.exe as a virus/trojan.

I checked myself, and Avg also said it was a trogeon.

I'd appreciate knowing if this is just security paranoyer, or
whether Jim actually has a problematic file (though I suspect it is! just
paranoyer).

Lol, I have to agree there. Also, in regards to the SAPI voices, I really
wish you could still get those from Freedomscientific on disc. Fortunately,
I still have a copy of JAWS 9, and that helps, considering I absolutely
refuse to use MS Sam, and would only use MS Mike and Mary if I really,
really, really, really, really had to.
Best Regards,

My thoughts exactly. Dark's analogy of a human being who always sleeps with
two shotguns under the pillow or at least beside the bed and eight locks on
the door describes it quite nicely. It also reminds me of Vista.
Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza?
Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.

Hi Lora,
I don't have all of the Spoonbil games up yet, but you can grab several
of them from my web site at
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/spoonbill-games/
and that might give you a good start.

Re: [Audyssey] BG Hearts and Other Games

2010-01-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lora,
I don't know about anyone else but I've had some problems with the
Spoonbill games under Vista and Windows 7. I've as yet not been able to
figure out what exactly the problem is so am unable to give suggestions
as to how to solve the issues I've had.
As far as voices goes Microsoft Sam, Mary, and Mike all were dropped in
favor of Microsoft Anna when Sapi 5.3 came out for Windows Vista. So in
short a brand new Windows 7 installation only comes with Microsoft Anna
installed. That's fine by me as she is a better voice than Microsoft's
older Sapi 5 voices.
As far as getting more voices goes that depends on how much you want to
spend and the quality of the voice you want. One place that makes Sapi 5
voices is
http://www.cepstral.com
and there voices are decent and are fairly inexpensive as far as voices
goes. Generally, they are $30.00 USD per voice.
Another site that sells voices is
http://www.nextup.com
and they have several good voices for sale from ATT, Cepstral,
Realspeak, etc. The only thing you need to be aware of is some are for
Sapi 5, which you want, and some are specifically designed for their own
products like Weather Aloud, Text Aloud, News Aloud, etc.

isn't the best of voices.

 Thanks again for your help.

Thought as much tom, I've certainly run that file a time or two myself
without trouble, this was the first time I tried with avg though, and
after someone on the entombed list has mentioned a similar problem i thought

Nice to know it's just avg being obsessively cautious.

You should buy mortal kombat vs. dc universe, or street fighter iv and
we'll have a go at it online *grin*. I doubt many card games are playable
actually unless you have some sight. I know that uno came out recently, but
doubt we'll be able to play it at all. what level of accessibility are you
looking for? there won't be a game that'll be 100% accessible, you'll always
need to at least memorize menus and such, but many are playable, especially
the fighters.

I recently bought a PS3 console. Originally I bought it for the
DVD/Blue-Ray capabilities. Now I begin to wonder what games I might be
able

to play with it.

I love board and card games, and would love a role-playing game that I
could

play. I'm not into sports games at all.

I'm willing to try other types of games as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Oh, I'll consider it. That sounds like a great idea.

I don't mind memorizing menus. I do it all the time for other things, even
for navigating the PS3 menus to play DVDs and such. And the idea of us
challenging each other on-line definitely has appeal.

*Ponders Amazon*
