This game will only work correctly on Windows XP. Too bad because I
actually like the game so far.

Thanks for that. Being a gamer yourself, I know
that you appreciate feedback--the good as much as the critical.
Well, if you will help me port it to C.net, I'll take the bull by the horns.
There's still lots of work to be done with it, and I know that if we port
it, others can work on it too, which of course was the intent.

Well, in Directx you can't pan sounds--any sound, if you're going to have

A question from someone who knows all squat about programming... but could
you not set the audio to pan while you were turning? Say you have the game
programmed to turn someone around in a full circle rather than having each
tap of the arrow key turn a certain number of degrees, could you not then
set the audio to match that? Or is that a fault of the 3D audio
functionality itself?

[Audyssey] New Heli Available

2011-01-30 Thread Ken the Crazy
OK, here it is, the next Heli. As always, get it from
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13071564/heli.zip
First of all, I changed the switch a bit. Now, hit the switch on its lower
half, the fan turns off. Hit it on the upper part, and the fan turns back on.
Hit it in the middle and nothing happens. Do you like simply being able to run
into the switch to turn it on and off, or should I set it up so that you have
to go above the switch and descend to turn it off? That would be more like a
modern American light switch, but I don't know that a toy helicopter could do
it, where I know that one could flip this style of switch.

Also, I added some code to slow down, Heli when it gets too close to the
player's head. Now Heli's sound doesn't jump around nearly as much, though
it's not perfect yet by any means. I also added the player AI. It doesn't
work as well as I'd like, but I'm still working on it.
One last thing added since last time is the sound of Heli passing through wind.
You can use it to judge its speed, especially if you're inside it. To get in,
press P for Point of View.
It's a bit trippy to be in Heli while its trim is set to a high (or low
negative) number. Things spin about like one of those NASA space sims.
The game also keeps score. Press s to hear the score. You can also press d to
hear your distance.

Hi all,

Okay, as the subject states I am seriously getting my butt kicked in
Mysteries of the Ancients beta 17. I'm playing the new level 1 right
now, testing out the updated monsters, etc and I must say this version
is certainly more challenging than prior versions. I've updated the
stats for everything and one thing you will notice once I release beta
17 later this weekend is that enemies move a lot faster than they did
before. You might walk into a room, see a skeleton, think he's no
problem, and the next second he is right there slicing you up like
roast beaf. Harpies are also a lot nastier than they once were. I
opened a door stepped inside and one landed on me claws first and
ripped me a new rear end before I barely knew she was there. Lol!

Oh, yeah, and as far as randomization goes I have made an important
decision on that as well. Instead of just removing it I decided to fix
it. Thus part of the delay in releasing the game. Instead of randomly
generating items and monsters when you enter a room all of the stats,
random generation, etc will be done before the level loads. That way
when you save a game it will save the state of everything. Plus doing
it this way I can limit the amount of ammo, gold, gems, and potions
you can possibly find per level. This has certainly aided in balancing
things out more because now you have to conserve ammo and potions when
and where you can, because you will have no idea when you will find
more to replace it.

Cheers!

In school we call it cardiovascular. BTW, I might be wrong, but if you have
been stung very badly on the heart, wouldn't your cardiovascular be
destroied? I mean, if your shot on the heart by a bullet, your
cardiovascular system would be destroied, since your vascular is related
with your heart and pumps blood around your body, and seeing if you are shot

Hi Folks,
The NFB introduced this car as a game simulation in last year's July
convention.

Blind Man Drives Car Independently
Avoids Dynamic Obstacles
Daytona Beach, Florida
(January 29, 2011):
The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the oldest and largest
organization of blind people in the nation, announced today that for the
first time a blind individual has driven a street vehicle in public
without the assistance of a sighted person. Mark Anthony Riccobono, a
blind executive who directs technology, research, and education programs
for the organization, was behind the wheel of a Ford Escape hybrid
equipped with nonvisual technology and successfully navigated 1.5 miles of
the road course section of the famed track at the Daytona International
Speedway.

The historic demonstration was part of pre-race activities leading up to
the Rolex 24 At Daytona this morning. Mr. Riccobono not only successfully
navigated the several turns of the road course but also avoided obstacles,
some of which were stationary and some of which were thrown into his path
at random from a van driving in front of him. Later he successfully
passed the van without collision. The Ford Escape was equipped with laser
range-finding censors that conveyed information to a computer inside the
vehicle, allowing it to create and constantly update a three-dimensional
map of the road environment. The computer sent directions to vibrating
gloves on the driver's hands, indicating which way to steer, and to a
vibrating strip on which he was seated, indicating when to speed up, slow
down, or stop.

Mr. Riccobono said: The NFB's leadership in the Blind Driver ChallengeT
has taken something almost everyone believed was an impossible dream and
turned it into reality. It was thrilling for me to be behind the wheel,
but even more thrilling to hear the cheers from my blind brothers and
sisters in the grandstands; today all of the members of the NFB helped
drive us forward. It is for them and for all blind Americans that the
National Federation of the Blind undertook this project to show that blind
people can do anything that our sighted friends and colleagues can do as
long as we have access to information through nonvisual means. Today we
have demonstrated that truth to the nation and the world.

Blind Driver To Debut New Technologies At Daytona

Mark Riccobono talks with Anil Lewis of the National Federation of the

and he is using nonvisual technologies to drive a car. (

Mark Riccobono climbs into a vehicle to test nonvisual technologies
Wednesday Jan. 26, 2011 at Daytona International Speedway. Riccobono is
blind and was selected to drive the vehicle by the National Federation of
the Blind as part of its Blind Driver Challenge. The challenge encouraged
universities and colleges to create technology that would assist blind
people to drive. (

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. January 28, 2011, 11:11 am ET
It's a cloudy morning at Daytona International Speedway, but Mark
Riccobono can't tell, nor does it really matter to him.

He walks up to the driver's side of a black, Ford Escape Hybrid parked on
the start-finish line, opens the door, sits down and adjusts his seat.
After a few minutes the car revs up and takes off.

None of that's unusual at one of the meccas of motorsports racing, except
for one thing: Riccobono is blind.

Saturday, Riccobono will take part in a public demonstration, driving
independently with the help of new nonvisual technology and a specially
modified car. The event, spearheaded by the the National Federation of the
Blind, is part of the pre-race activities of Saturday's Rolex 24 event at
Daytona. Riccobono will drive a portion of the same course as the drivers
in the race.

I pretty much shut out the idea that driving was possible, because I
didn't want to focus on that aspect of something I couldn't do, said
Riccobono, 34, who has been legally blind since age 5 and was selected
from a group of test drivers to be behind the wheel Saturday. But I think
this project is a clear example that when you dream big and put your heart
and resources into it, you get to unimagined places.

The NFB, an advocacy group of more than 50,000 members, hatched the idea a
decade ago.

In 2004 it began the Blind Driver Challenge through its Jernigan
Institute. The challenge encouraged partnerships with universities and
manufacturers to create technology that would enable a blind driver to
safely operate a vehicle.

Hi Willem,

I debug as I go. That is I write a couple of lines of code or a new section

Baseball, BattleShip, Black Jack, Bop It, Concentration, coupling, Craps, Draw
Poker, Football, Golf, Hangman, Homer on a Harley, Life, Mach 1, Mach 1 tts,
Master Mind, Monopoly, Pong, Puppy1, Roulette, Simon, Skunk, Slot Machine,
Snakes and Ladders, Spanker, Star Mule, Triple J Shooter, Trivia game engine,
Trucker, Yahtzee

Braille reference guide, Brain, Reader, Waver, Batting practice, Golf course

 Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] my ramblings about programming: why I use vb

2011-01-30 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hi Ken,
You say others can work on it. This is the exact problem we have. Other
people can't work on it if they do not have any of the .net development
platforms. I am one of these and have BGT, which is fine for all of my
development needs. It is portable, it is cheap, and it is packed with nice
game features that even DirectX cannot compare with. For example adding ogg
support to DirectX is yet another dependency and another farce. However with
BGT, it is very easy, as it is integrated into the engine. Encryption and
packing features is another nice advantage. Granted this is not required for
an open source game, but for compiled games it is easier to encrypt and
package sounds than it ever would have been for VB or C directly, let alone
the .net platforms.
That's your main problem with a community based game. Not everyone might
have the development platform it is designed for. I want BGT, you don't have
it. You want .net or vb6, I don't have it. Someone else might even want to
convert it to python, which neither of us might have. Simply because all the
developers are experienced in different languages makes a community open
source game hard to maintain, simply because all the developers will want it
translating into their language so that they can help to maintain it, which
gives us several different executables.

Regards,
Damien.

Thanks for that. Being a gamer yourself, I know

Well, if you will help me port it to C.net, I'll take the bull by the

we port it, others can work on it too, which of course was the intent.

Hi Ken,

A few comments about vb.net if you don't mind. I'm not objecting to it
so much as pointing out some long term issues you may encounter with
going with vb.net you probably don't know about.

Although, there is a ffree Visual Basic .net compiler, Visual Basic
Express, the latest version isn't very accessible. I tried the demos
of Visual Basic 2010, Visual C# 2010, and Visual C++ 2010 and they
don't work well at all with Jaws, Window-Eyes, and NVDA. So in order
to use Visual Basic .net we would have to use Visual Basic 2005 or
Visual Basic 2008 to have reasonable accessibility with the IDE and
compiler. Problem is for Windows 7 it is highly recommended to use
Visual Basic 2010 since it is optimized for .NET 4.0 which ships with
Windows 7. That's trouble enough.

Next, is the install size for your game. While the application itself
would be quite small the dependencies that might need to be installed
could be quite large. Last time I looked I believe .NET 4.0 is
something like 350 MB or there about. That's not a problem for Windows
7 users like me since .NET 4.0 is integrated into the OS, but it would
be for people still running XP and Vista since they'd have to install
.NET 4.0 which is a fairly sizable install. That's not necessarily a
good thing since not everyone has a high speed connection, and a lot
of people over seas has to pay for how much bandwidth they use. As a
game developer forcing them to download a 350 MB Windows upgrade is
asking a bit much for a free game.

Then, there is third-party dependencies involved. With .net languages
like Visual Basic .net you need to use managed wrappers to access
various libraries and APIs. So if we want to use DirectX we have to
download and install SlimDX which doesn't come with XP, Vista, or
Windows 7. This is just one more dependency among others we will end
up adding to the list of things to download and install before anyone
can use this game.

One serious issue I encountered with the express version of Visual
Basic .net is selecting a target platform. By default VB.net Express
is set to Any CPU. This is a generic target platform that in theory is
suppose to compile cross-platform independant executables that will
run on x86 and x64 platforms. Problem is when including third-party
wrappers you absolutely must specify a target platform like x86 or
x64, and the express version of the IDE won't let you do this. You
need to buy and own Visual Basic Pro to recompile your game source for
x86 or x64 specific Windows platforms.Since this is a free project,
free game, and your intention is to keep development free VB.net may
not be as inexpensive and free as you think do to technical
limitations in the VB Express IDE.

Finally, there is he issue of documentation. While there is plenty of
VB.net books on basic things like using VB.net to create a front end
to an SQL database, writing a simple text editor, calculator, and that
kind of thing there is really no documentation at all for games. The
majority of .net game developers use C#.net and the XNA Framework.
Over the past, oh, five years or so C#.net has largely replaced Visual
Basic as the mainstream language of choice for home users and
professionals. Visual Basic isn't exactly dead, but you don't see
Microsoft marketing VB.net as nearly as much as C#.net to the home
user.

For example, back in the 1990's Microsoft launched a marketing
campaign to introduce Visual Basic as a simple, easy to use language
for home users and professionals alike. As part of that marketing
campaign Microsoft created DirectX com components like DX8VB.dll for
Visual Basic 6, and there were a handful of books written from
professionals explaining that anyone could learn Visual Basic 6 and
write his/her own games.

Around 2003 Microsoft completely switched their marketing campaign to
C#.net. Instead of naturally going to VB.net, which would be the
logical assumption here, they began advertising C#.net instead. They
released Managed DirectX for C#.net which was eventually phased out
and replaced by XNA. A long with this switch to C#.net went the
authors who write books on the various Microsoft languages. Instead of
hearing about how great VB.net was most were saying C#.net was the
best language from the home user or pro software developer.

As a result if you want to get documentation for SlimDX most of the
documentation is written for a C#.net developer. If you want to use
SDL most of the documentation is for a C#.net developer. FMOD Ex is
VB.net and C#.net compatible, but strangely the code

[Audyssey] Really cool fight I just had now in TDV.

2011-01-30 Thread Shiny protector
This, and only this, is the best battle I ever had in TDV. Spoilers, read
below.
So, I took out the airbase. Won a battle with a guard tower, then I proceeded.
I was surrounded by fighters, guard towers and Sam batteries. I was going to
the refueler, so the fighters were chasing me around the sectors. I fled. So,
like William which killed Harold Godwin, I flew away, went to the refueler,
refueled and rearmed my aircraft, Then I turned around. I tagged fighter 2, got
in missile range. Instead of blasting a missile at him, I switched to my guns.
So, I heard a missile shot and a fighter being hit. I checked my health, all
fine. I switched to fighter 1. Fighter won got knocked out during the duel. So,
we reached fighter 2. I locked onto him with guns. Oh one second I forgot my
technique! I remembered, blasted bullets at his aircraft, rolled away at the
same time, and what I here is that the son of a female dog is down. Lol. And
the best part of the fight was before I rearmed. The Sam battery missiles were
hitting the fighters and stuff. I must admit I only got hit once. Miss aiming
Sam batteries! Now I have to put out the powerplant. This was the best fight I
ever had in the game, and I will never, ever forget it. I hope Brutus learnt a
lesson. Well, time to see who's stronger. 2 Fighters and some other enemies
being hit by Sam batteries from the wrecked airbase! What do you guys think?

Hi Jim,

It is not extra work or waisted time/energy. It is generally
recommended that you declare variables using the proper data type like
integer, string, character, boolean, etc as it will improve memory
usage and CPU usage. Every time you declare a variable without
specifying its data type you force the runtime environment to
interpret your code, and as a result you end up waisting your system
resources on runtime interpretation of your code. So it really does
not pay to be a lazy programmer. Which is exactly what you are when
you don't declare and properly initialize variables.

Cheers!

Hi,

Python for s60 will run on most if not all s60 3rd devices, including the
E66. The current version is python for s60
2.0 which is python 2.5 ported to symbian. If you install the interpreter as
well as the script shell, you should be
able to play blackjack with may be a little tweaking. I imagine it would
also be possible for someone to write a small
GUI for the phone to put on top of the blackjack game.
The python for s60 homepage is at:

 Hi Nicol,
I know that some older Nokia phones did have a Python interpreter

If it does the game will run. If not I can not do much about that as
it is up to Nokia to maintain the Python interpreter for their phone.
So I'd ask someone from Nokia if the E66 has a Python interpreter

You can get Max login, and Max Voice Plus from

Quite accessible. Supports text to speach, voice command via Windows 7,

finding good documentation on how to use it. Just have a good look at

Have fun!

Re: [Audyssey] jim's baseball game

2011-01-30 Thread Charles Rivard
It could be good strategy. Let's say that the bases are loaded, there is
only one out, and the pitcher has pitched to you 3 balls outside the strike
zone. The count is 3 balls and no strikes. Here comes a curve ball.
Maybe, because the pitcher isn't concentrating, or because he's lost his
good control, he will walk you, and you score another run. Then again, you
might hit a brounder to the third baseman, he fields it, steps on third base
before the runner from second base gets to third, throws the ball home to
the catcher who tags the runner from third, and, maybe, he then throws to
first base before you get there. Tripple play, you didn't score, their
pitcher is out of a big jam, and you blew it. A bit far fetched, but it
could happen. who

[Audyssey] driving blind

2011-01-30 Thread Charles Rivard

Here's an article from the Daytona Beach News journal!

Technology helps blind driver lead lap - Racing
a.. Sunday, January 30, 2011

No driver racing in the Rolex 24 At Daytona could have elicited louder
screams from one group of fans than Mark Riccobono.

Unknown to thousands of race fans pouring into the Speedway on Saturday
morning, Riccobono became a hero to 400 members of the National Federation
of the Blind. They were there from all over the country for one reason
only -- to witness Riccobono become the first blind driver to take the wheel

in a solo trip on the track.

Several federation members compared his demonstration to the first United
States space flight in 1961.

He's our Alan Shepard, said GaryWunder, editor of the Braille Monitor, the

federation magazine. We've been looking forward to this for a long time.

For the blind, driving a car represents freedom and independence, things
other drivers often take for granted.

The federation challenged the nation's universities to take the challenge of

developing non-visual technology that would allow a blind person to drive
independently. One team accepted, a group of students at Virginia Tech,
working under the direction of Dennis Hong, director of the Robotics and
Mechanisms Laboratory. The equipment was placed in a Ford Escape Hybrid.

Riccobono directs technology, research and education for the Federation's
Jernigan Institute in Baltimore.

To get behind the wheel, he put on gloves that send vibrating signals along
his fingers to tell him when to turn and sat on a cushion that vibrated
along his legs to tell him when to brake or accelerate. He drove the inside
horseshoe on the track and in a tactical demonstration, dodged several boxes

thrown in front of his vehicle and passed a van.

The long-term implications of the technology were simply mind-boggling for
many cheering in the bleachers.

This means a lot more to us than just the driving, Wunder said. If we can

get all the information that's necessary to drive, what other things will we

be able to do?

It's incredible, said Randy Phifer, of Overland Park, Kansas, a federation

member listening to the play-by-play over the infield speakers. I told my
fellow parishioners at home that I'd be back to pick them up, Phifer joked.

For college student Mika Baugh of Indiana, it was pretty neat.

Owning and driving her own car would mean she wouldn't have to wait for the

bus in the freezing cold.

You can't even imagine what blind and sighted people will be able to do
with this technology someday, she said.

Sabrina Deaton, president of the Daytona Beach chapter of the federation,
lost her ability to drive almost 11 years ago, a victim of macular
degeneration.

Driving was one of the most difficult things to give up, she said. It was

giving up my independence.

The ability to drive opens up opportunities for education and employment,
she said. And, just to be able to hop into the car and take a Sunday
drive.

If the research pace continues, Riccobono said the technology could be
available for general use in just five years. Federation officials said they

couldn't estimate how much the technology would cost.

Riccobono said other challenges remain, especially convincing sighted
drivers that it would be safe to share the road with blind drivers.

Hi Clement,
I introduced the first article with the statement that the NFB created a car
racing simulator game that they demonstrated at their July 2010 national
convention.

It used one-of-a-kind controller vibrating gloves.
Now how can we get our hands on that computer program?
And the gloves?

Re: [Audyssey] RSW test game?

2011-01-30 Thread Christopher Bartlett
If you want to start an advanced test game, I'm completely on board; I find
the core and classic variations less interesting. I'm currently using the
web interface in the (I think) Forest-c3 specialty game. I've submitted my
first turn's orders on draft status. The web interface is pretty clean and
easy to gather info from, though an updated client would make certain things
easier.

The biggest information lack I can see is the relative geography of planets.
The topology is the most important consideration, but it would be useful to
know where in relationship to the other players a planet is. If the
graphical client provides an overview to a sighted player, this is
information that is thus far unavailable to the blind player.

I'm led to think this may not be an issue by the sections in the help
document that discuss the use of the client and in particular the map
editing feature. It seems like absolute position is almost irrelevant. If
so, then other than effort, we're not at any disadvantage I can perceive at
this point.

Hi Chris,

Right, absolute position is completely irrelevant, and (generally) isn't
provided to the sighted player either. In fact, the graphical client is
only a data management tool, and it works solely with the data provided
in the text report--no data other than that is available to any players.

Other people on this board have expressed an interested in a Classic or
Advanced game.If I started one of these, how many people would want

The car is probably still more expensive than even the most expensive
computer, at least those available to the general public. Call me a pecimist
but I'm still not convinced that they've actually done all their homework.
THere are just too many variables involved in driving. And what happens if
the vibrating motors in either the gloves or the seat malfunctions or goes
out in the middle of a drive? Seems to me if that happens then you have a
problem.

I debug as I go. That is I write a couple of lines of code or a new

I find the concept of the advanced game with it's character types most
interesting, but I'd prefer to work up to it with a core game first to get
used to giving orders, and also investigate possible ways of overviewing
textual map information, sinse the last thing I want to find is I get bogged
down in simply knowing where my fleets and my opponent's fleets are even as
I'm trying to deal with gather artifacts, robotic or human population,

it strikes me a core game gives the chance to investigate the rsw system and
any possible accessibility tweaks which may need to be made, before getting
into complex stratogy.

so, though as essentially a less aggressive player who deffinately! likes
the idea of the missionary or collector styles rather than the conquest

i also do not fancy multiple games at once currently I'm afraid.

 Hi David,

I think I would join a classic or advanced test game, but only after the
core game which currently runs has finished. I simply want to get the hang
of the simpler game first before I start a more complicated one.
So, if you wait for the core game to finish before you start another one,
 I'll join it.
I don't have time to play in more than one game at the same time anyway.

Re: [Audyssey] RSW test game?

2011-01-30 Thread Christopher Bartlett
I'm happy to report on issues that come up in the advanced/specialty games.
The game I'm in has three additional character types, key and ship hoarders
that do what they suggest and a remnant of a progenitor race that appears to
partake of weaker versions of everyone else's powers and score points based
on all the victory conditions. I chose to play a missionary as it
complemented the strengths of my two other team members (oh yes, it's a team
game too.) I've managed to submit first turn orders, though I've kept them
as draft, i.e. not submitted to the server until I have had a chance to
coordinate with my team mates who are offering me game advice.

As an aside, I think you'll find the web interface less of a learning
challenge than the email interface. The page is clean and easy to move
around, as everything is set up in nice tables, with the order field near
the bottom. There's even a handy link to the order syntax, so that you can
have this open in a separate tab and refer back to it. The orders are
described in the order of phases that happen through the turn, so you can
just go from heading to heading in the order codes and see which orders
occur in what sequence.

All in all, this is a much simpler web interface than say, Core Exiles or
Ashes of Angels, the most recent web-based games I've tried. A client would
be nice, but really, I was able to do my first turn in under five minutes
once I had the hang of setting up the order codes and the rules in separate
tabs to flip between while researching what in heck I was doing Now that
I've done it once, though the turns will quickly get more complex, it should
go smoothly enough, particularly with a week between turns and two teammates
with a vested interest in me doing well.

Re: [Audyssey] jim's baseball game

2011-01-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

That's not impossible, but I'd say pretty long odds. A tripple play
like the one you describe is pretty rare. If it were me I'd opt for
slamming that ball as hard as I could, try and knock that ball out of
the stadium, and run as fast as I could. With the bases loaded like
that no matter what the chances are high you will score at least one
maybe two home runs. More home runs is icing on the cake.

Cheers!

On 1/30/11, Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net wrote:
A bit far fetched, but it
 could happen. who

Hi Ken,

First, you are right. C# .net is much much easier than C++ to learn.
There are a number of good reasons why it has replaced Visual Basic in
academic circles as the new beginners programming language. I'll list
some of the main ones below.

Garbage Collection --- In C and C++ it was always necessary to do your
own memory management and your own garbage collection. If you
initialized a pointer you had to properly destroy it or cause memory
leaks and errors. With C# .net the .net runtime has built in garbage
collection that frequently cleans up unused memory etc allowing you to
write more stable and error free code.Of course, it is still a good
idea to do your own garbage collection, but the garbage collecter is a
nice safety net you don't have with C++.

String Handling --- In C++ there are a number of character string
types that makes it difficult to cast one type of string to another.
Since Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 use unicode you often find
yourself in the position of casting strings between ansci and unicode.
Since C# .net uses the System.String class the .net framework handles
these types of conversions automatically for you. This makes it
several times easier when ever you need to pass a string to a function
and you have no idea of what string data type the function requires.

Rapid Development --- Like Visual Basic C# .net was designed to
rapidly create software through a simple point and click interface.
You can create forms, buttons, list boxes, and other GUI controls
simply by dragging and dropping objects from the C# .net toolbox.
Obviously, this is one of the features that made Visual Basic so
popular in the late 90's and now is available in all the Visual Studio
languages.

Software Portability --- As with Java and other runtime languages C#
.net software is quite portable. If you use a cross-platform
compatible design, such as Mono, you can build and run C# .net
applications on Mac OS, Linux, and Windows with very little issues
porting between platforms. This makes it easier for a developer like
yourself to create software for Mac and Linux without owning and/or
using the target platform yourself.

Reserved Words --- Unlike a lot of other languages C# .net only has a
small handful of reserved words for the language. This makes learning
and using the language much easier than other triditional programming
languages as Microsoft did a fair job of trying to keep it simple
stupid while at the same time offering developers a powerful
programming language that meets their needs.

C-Style Syntax --- C# .net, as the name implies, is a member of the C
family of languages. The advantage here is that many tech schools,
colleges, and universities use C# .net as an introductory course in
preparation for teaching Java, C++, and other more advanced C based
languages. Unlike Visual Basic learning C# .net will help you as a
programmer get the fundimentals of C, C++, Java, etc and if you ever
choose to learn them C# .net will give you an introductory foundation
to work from.

Second, I've looked at Sharp Develop. Although, admitedly my
experience is pretty limited. Most of the time I either use Visual C#
2008 on Windows, or if I'm on Linux I use Monodevelop. I happen to
like Monodevelop myself, and it is pretty accessible with Orca which
makes me happy.

Cheers!

 Hello Tom and all,
If you would port Heli to c.net, I will, grudgingly, learn the language.
(Oh I can't believe I'm actually saying this! LOL)
I know that c.net isn't nearly as difficult as vanilla C, so maybe it won't
be so hard to wrap my peewee brain around lol.
Second, have you had any experience with Sharp Develop? The IDE seems
totally accessible, and one of their claims is to be able to translate
vb.net to c.net and vice versa. Any thoughts?

Hi Ken,

I am sorry, but my tag line program is written to work with my Email
program. That is the Email program that I wrote for myself. So the tag
line program would not work with any commercial Email programs.

Sorry about that.

Re: [Audyssey] my ramblings about programming: why I use vb

Hi,

Thanks. That's certainly good to know. However, the fact remains, this
still would just be one more piece of software someone would have to
get and install just to acquire XP functionality under Windows 7. It
seams to me in the long term it is better to switch to FMOD or XAudio2
rather than sticking with DirectSound.

Cheers!

Hi, at this point it's worth saying that realtek and creative have written
applications that allow you to get the direct sound 3d functionality back.
I've never tried them since I am currently on xp, but I heard they do exist.
