Hmmm, I do not remember a purely text version of the lunar lander game. I will
have to give the copy that I have a go and see what it is all about. I've also
always wanted to try to make the QBasic gorilla exploding banana throwing game

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

2011-05-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Right. That's basically my thought. Why reinvent the wheel when there
is free code laying around. Its perfectly legal to use it as long as
the game remains free of charge. Open source code has helped me out a
lot over the years. Especially when it comes to games.

There are many free open source games I've thought would make great
audio games like Lin City which is a free clone of Sim City, Freeciv
which is a clone of Civilization, Flight Gear which is a free clone of
Microsoft Flight Simulator, and so on. it might be possible to modify
one of those existing games with speech etc and turn them into free
accessible games. As we are really lacking something like a good
flight sim for the blind something like Flight Gear would probably be
a great starting point.

Hi Imbar,

Well if I had the code for a flight sim I could try to convert it to a space

need degrees in mathematics, physics, aeronautics, geography and probably a
couple more that I am not thinking of right now. And heck I never even
graduated high school. Back then I was not yet legally blind, but I was a very
very slow reader and reading always gave me bad headaches. Now I could take
Star Wars or Star Trek or Jetsons sounds and replace the sounds in my Puppy 1
game and make that more of a space game. But Puppy 1 is more of an arcade
shooter game than a flight sim. And it does not have actual mathematics,
physics, aeronautics, and geography such as longitude, latitude, altitude and
attitude etc. Like the one flight sim that I played with when I had a tiny bit
of sight. It was the Microsoft flight sim version 5 for dos. I was just
playing around putting in longitude and latitude numbers and the next thing I
knew I was flying around the statue of Liberty. So then I tried to land on
Ellis Island, which didn't work. But I did fly under the Brooklyn bridge. Was
never able to land on it though. And then I flew between the Twin Towers. Umm
occasionally crashing into them. I wonder how many programmers with how many
degrees it takes to write a flight sim like the Microsoft flight sim programs.

To answer Jim's question.
The shuttle is on the launch pad.
The three main engines S S M E engines light up first, then the two Solid

Around two minutes into the flight just after max q the roughest part of the
flight where they're going from subsonic to super sonic fast thean the speed
of sound, the SRB's separate. Just about orbit or just after orbit the S S M
E are shut off.
The External tang which holds all of the fuel, AKA E T that burns up in the
atmosphere. The E T is the only part that doesn't come back.
While in orbit. They have the RCS or reaction control jets. There's twelve
altogether. There's two on each side of the nose and four on each side back
either by the wings or by the tail. Not sure which.
But while in space it's the RCS and the OM's which are the two orbiting
maneuvering jets. There's one on each side of the three S S M E just under
the tail. They give six thousand pound of thrust each. The S S M E give
something like 175,000 pounds of thrust each.
I don't remember the power of the SRB's nor how much thrust are in the

But my point is this.
The om's slow her down and the rcs help steer the shuttle.
Hope that helps.

at some time they do not go directly vertical. I am not sure if the solid

As far as the ejected rocket boosters and fuel tanks I believe they
have a recovery ship try and recover them.

As far as the early space missions they used the Redstone rocket to
lift the Mercury and I believe the Geminiships into orbit. However,
the Apaulo spaceships were much much heavier and they had to build the

Hi,

Hmmm..Well, if I ever get in a mood to do a flight sim I'd probably
use the open source simulator, Flight Gear, as a basis of comparison.
I don't know how much true to life the math and physics is in Flight
Gear but its suppose to be fairly equal to Microsoft Flight Simulator
in a lot of ways. Flight Gear is written in C/C++ so there would be a
lot of great ready to use sample source code for any C/C++ game
developer right there. I'm pretty sure the math and physics would be
fairly accurate in Flight Gear and would give a novis developer a big
leg up on the technical end of a flight sim.

to a launch in progress and they usually announce time, altitude (in

rocket booster separation they have to aim the engines to the precise
target in space since any direction can be targeted. Usually you are
about 15 feet in space at about 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

Think of down range is like this.
You're standing in a line of people. down range is just that, the one
furthest from you in that line.
In space you have up and down and then you have down range. Think of down
range as your horizontal line and the up and down as your vertical line.
I say this because of the following example.
A rocket will go straight up.
Well as it goes straight up it gets away from you both horizontal and
virtually. The down range is the horizontal distance from you.
Hope this helps you to understand it better now.

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

2011-05-08 Thread shaun everiss

We could do the launching part, most of it is automated anyway.
In orbit sim which I played with a friend, you need to close all
doors, power up all systems, check it all works, load fuel, then push
the launch key and the computer does all the rest.

In fact in actual launch the crew doesn't have to do much its all
controled by ground systems at least till you get in orbit and need
to call out bits to the radil.

Landing on earth, maybe docking and undocking and burns are all we need to do.
And to be honest unless something goes wrong its not that bad.
Space walking after flying the shuttle to the station that could be
interesting.
there could be challenges, Obviously the game can't continue for
actual realtime gameplay, but things like staying in the airlock so
you are aclimitised for a spaciffic time, the fact you could float
away, catch something ripp your suit, drop bags, radios, etc.
Get hands jammed in equipment and other things, could be interesting
to say the least.

I have listened to spacwalks and they deffinately sound quite complex.
NOt to mention living on the station, eating food, moving round and
doing excercise, sleeping, working with robotics, experiments and other things.

All are chalenging.
At 10:13 a.m. 8/05/2011, you wrote:

I for one agree with you Imbar.

I hope someone makes me eat my words on the following.
I don't think that we could do the launching part.
But there ought to be a way via the keyboard and or a USB controller where
we could
Orbit, dock and undock with the International space station, perform the
reentry procedures and land as realistically as possible.
I know that the program that the Astronauts use to practice with is called
PILOT.
I don't remember what it stands for though.
So far for a airplane simulator,
The best around is Three D Velocity.
For the Civilian side of the flying coin.
I'm not going to offer a recommendation.
Ron who knows with his interests, if he were sighted he knows that he'd have
a career in the air and hopefully would have earned his 1,000 hour

There is an orbiter sim at www.orbitsim.com
Its a bit visual I am not sure if its free or opensource but
sertainly loads of stuff has been written for it including 3rd party addons.

So that may be something to concider.

well Its a bit beyond our reach.
In the news it costs about 30 million to actually physically fly for a tourist.
For an astro you need to have 4 degrees in maths and other subjects
and a load of other crap that none of us let alone any normal person
not dedicated enough would be able to pass.

Even if we did, I am not sure in real life what blind astros could do.
Maybe opperate some of the less graphical systems, write things, etc
but vary little.

I think right now any real chance of any of us going up in space is
vertually nonexistant for now anyway.

In fact this applies for any disabled person.
Wheelchair people for instance wouldn't even fit inside things.
Not to mention going to the loo I here this is quite complex to.
And ofcause coming back to earth after your stay in space well
getting used to gravity is a bit of a challenge.

Hi Darren,

Well, I don't want to sound negative, but my guess it is the technical
skills required to create a simulator that the ag developers lack.
Unlike a game a realistic flight simulator, space simulator, whatever
requires a pretty decent amount of physics and a whole lot of math to
make absolutely realistic. Something like MS Flight Simulator is very
realistic, is good enough to train pilots on, because it has a very
realistic physics engine that behaves much like the actual aircraft
does in real life. Its difficult for an amateur developer to do if
they don't have the technical background for it. Even I would have
difficulty of creating a completely realistic flight simulator as
physics and math weren't my best subjects in college. I got passing
grades, but nothing to write home about.

well this reminds me of the nightjar but the apolo 13 mission could
be interesting.

Same concept as the night jar, or slightly worse outcome.
Something like having an explosion send the ship into deep space for
starters then the rest of actual game.
Ofcause with all the failing systems, and actually trying to get into
earth, you could either be trying to get back, or evolve the plot,
this could involve aliens both good and bad, etc.

ANd other things.
Eventually getting a better ship than you got, then fixing things
and going back.
You could have multipul endings maybe like a choose your own
adventure story but it gets complex anyway.

checked for caution and warning signs on the onboard computer and

2011-05-08 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Imbar,

Yeah even though landing the shuttle is similar to landing a glider plane the
launch is nothing like taking off in a plane. You know in an airplane you
crank up the engines, release the brakes and roll down the runway building up
speed until you get to the correct speed to pull up and lift off of the ground.
You then ascend into the sky at what about a 30 degree angle. Now the shuttle
on the launch pad is standing vertically on it's tail attached to the huge
external fuel tank. So you are sitting on your back looking up into the sky.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and all five main engines fire up burning hydrogen and liquid
oxygen. At the same time the two solid rocket boosters ignite. All hell
brakes loose and you ascend almost vertically straight up into the sky at
thousands of miles an hour. But yeah as a shuttle sim it could be done as
easily as an airplane sim.

BTW I do not think that I would so much enjoy weightlessness with no visual
reference points, no gravity for reference etc.

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

Well Anshan launch is similar to that, except you can actually build a
same type of fuel but we have to be really smart for that. I once new
someone who made a small rocket and launched a message into space, but
that is for another list. What I think is that they have several buttons
and keys to press down on the ground and the main one is like a pedal
you press with your foot, I think that builds the pressure required for
it to create the force that will push the ship up, then when they say
launch sin process, the pedal that is pressed causes the engines to let
go of the pressure and send up the ship so fast that if anything was in
its way like a plane it would smash it to stoma and everyone on board
since it is going extremely fast.

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

2011-05-08 Thread darren harris
Hi tom,

Yeah I can see how that would be an issue.

I've played games like frontier elite 2 in the passed, it simulates space
very well. I've also played games like x beyond the frontier, whereby the
normal physics of space don't apply. Meaning if you want to stop you can and
you don't need to reverse thrust to do it.

I think the 1 thing that attracts me with space games is the sheer vastness
of them.

I don't care so much if the physics of space is right or not so much, but I
love the game to be directly affected by my interaction with it's
environment. For example, having a direct affect on the economy by trading
or manufacturing.

Am not 1 that likes or favours structured games. Whereby for example if you
get beyond a specific level you have to start doing other things. it's ok
for those things to become available, but equally it should be ok for you to
not do those things should you choose to. I like freedom of play. Whereby
you can effectively choose your own gaming experience within a particular
environment.

Don't get me wrong, if you choose to build a space station, then obviously
that has a process you need to follow in order to build it successfully. But
the point is I chose to build it.

But at this time, FSX and the third part program It's Your Plane from Canada

Hi Shaun,

Well, I can say that Asteroids 98, a remake by Activision for Win 98,
wasn't boring. Besides better graphics and sounds it had a more
complete plot than the original Asteroids of the 1980's. Basically,
the in-game story was you were sent out to stop these asteroids from
hitting earth. As you played you found out the asteroids were a weapon
used by an alien race, the crystal aliens, who were trying to start a
war with Earth and whipe us out. Of course, besides asteroids there
were space snakes, UFOs, and even space probes. There were a number of
different types of asteroids like ancient energy asteroids,
indestructable asteroids, etc which made things certainly interesting.
Asteroids 98 was awesome.

Cheers!

I know that the program that the Astronauts use to practice with is called

I don't remember what it stands for though.
So far for a airplane simulator,

Seriously, shooting or at least some stratogy is needed.
If you mean just fly round in the air doing not that much then get a

Play for 30 minutes, then fall assleap.
 Its real boring.

Hi Ron,

Why couldn't we do a Shuttle launch? I have a friend who went to Space
Camp one year and she ended up being Shuttle Commander. They even let
her try as Shuttle pilot in the simulator which was cool. I think with
the right accessibility aids flying a space shuttle is no different
than any other aircraft. You just have to make sure to get the angles
right when taking off and landing or you will turn into a fireball.

Anyway, I would love a space shuttle simulator. I've always wanted to
fly one of the shuttles and it shouldn't be that hard to create. Just
need to get the right kind of actors to do for the communications
between the flight crew and NASA. As well as the flight crew and the
International Space Station etc.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

2011-05-07 Thread Thomas Ward

I got passing
grades, but nothing to write home about.

 develop a fully fledged sim.

than any other aircraft. You just have to make sure to get the angles
right when taking off and landing or you will turn into a fireball.

Anyway, I would love a space shuttle simulator. I've always wanted to

need to get the right kind of actors to do for the communications

HI Clement,

Agreed. I've been thinking for along time of doing a Star Wars
Starfighter simulator or a Star Trek game where you get to pilot the
U.S.S. Enterprise. Flying around is sort of dull if you can't get into
the thick of things and blow a few enemy tie intercepters or droid
starfighters out of existance. Part of the fun of getting into a
starfighter is to out smart, out maneuver, and out shoot the endless
waves of enemy ships coming at you. Add some Star Wars battle music
and you have a fun space simulator.

Cheers!

I would love to see that. And with time, you could increase the
complexity to multiplayer and work in squadrons... maybe not standard
12-person squadrons, but something simular... nine, say. It would be
a blast to have to coordinate other people to attack enemy flights
that are also controlled by other players.

HI Clement,

Cheers!

I was about to say this... with the difference being that sports
games aren't generally my thing. Action games give me much more of a
thrill to play. And a lot of the better action games such as the Lord
of the Rings games on the ps2 require a lot of running around. The
objective is to kill everything on the level... but on a large
battlefield it's a lot harder to find enemies quickly without sight.
Nevertheless, it's still fun to play... and as tom said, it's worth
it sometimes to get such a great game despite the patience it takes to play it.

I got passing
grades, but nothing to write home about.

develop a fully fledged sim.

Hi Ron,

Oh, I could probably do it as well, at least a fair shuttle simulator,
but like Munawar I've got so much going on now I don't have the time.
Something else I'd love to see in accessible format is an Apaulo
simulator. Not only taking off, but flying the Apaulo to the moon and
back. That would rock.

On 5/7/11, Ron Kolesar kolesar16...@roadrunner.com wrote:

Thank you Tom for making me eat my statement. SMILES.
So far the only people that I know who might be able to do it for us
would

be Munawar with his people atBPC Programs.
But I know he has his hands full with school and other responsibilities.
But with his business and normal home responsibilities.
After my vet gets payed on Monday, I'll be placing a order for a new
wireless headset for both the ears and for those games that have
communication features.
I'm getting tangled up in all of the cables.
Both for the USB headset that I have and with the new f510.
Will let everyone know how it works out when it gets here for those
looking
for a way to untangle themselves some what from all of those cables as
well.

Ron who said why can't we drive and fly? SMILES.

And how is this going to turn out, will it be in adrift or in thorn or
something, or is it going to be like an action-game/space innovators style.

You know, I like
action/firstPerson/TurnedBasedGAmes/sidescrolling/3rdPersonGames the
others like RPG/text Adventures, and things like that that lack action
are not the best. The other remaining genres are Okay for me.

I never played any mainstream because I never had the equipment to do so
and never got the blind friendly game. I know there was a few games that
were more for Nintendo 32-bit or maybe 64-bit, and it had some narrative
action.

Re: [Audyssey] Space sims?

Well, if we want a successful simulator, we would have to know the line
of physics and chemistry so we can tell what we should do in different
situations, because in space the physics are different, but then we will
need different lines in math to be able to...
