Funnily enough, I never use the numbpad switch at all, I find it quite a pest, I just swap Hal to the function key command set, then turn the keys off whenever I want to play a game. In fact the only game which really needs a numberpad and has no alternative whatsoever is monkey business. Beware the grue! Then I started having weird problems with the right shift key not working. So lets say Compaq got an ear full when I sent it back to be serviced. oh man. yeah those cups can easilly get knocked I never care for the plastic ones. I have an external board for playing games. never bothered with wireless because of batteries, etc I like wired usb when I use those which when I play games on the box web games are another matter but I suppose I should probably do that to. well the dropping was a misjudging it dropped on the carpet. its not the worst story I have heard, a friend dropped his on a concrete floor, ok I admit my toshiba got mangled but it was ok. this guy's compaq disintergrated it went into little bits. smsh. Desktop wise the latest 2 are ok, the one I had before that had a good life and is now dead though it was a bad boy requiring reformats. strangely though it was slow xp fixed it, so it didn't care about win98. maybe it wanted another os? This record is broken with the first windows box which came from a bankrupt company. we can see why. things kept failing. Reformats and more reformats. etc. OFcause we had time then even my dad had time. It was rebuilt with bits and bobs. however thats all gone now. I struggled to replace the main dvd drive on the main pc last year because of time to rebuild it. the system needed a major hard drive and dust clearout and I decided to use a dvd module I was not using at the time. it all worked but that was a struggle. we also couldn't leave it down for to long as it was one of the main systems at the time. As far as the coffee goes, well it wasn't one cup, it was more like half a cup, and a small cup from the thermos I used to take around school at that. I didn't actually drop it, more sort of knocked it while stationary. Sinse then I've always made certain to have laptops and coffee in separate places. Even when i'm on a train, i use the table in the next seat for coffee, or else hold the coffee in my hand while drinking it and not over my laptop. I will say though, that's the one great thing about wireless keyboards. I frequently now sit around with drinks or food while I'm using my computer, but only with the keyboard on my lap a long way away from anything else, besides in my experience pc keyboards are far less senstative than laptop ones. well my main reason for the toshiba obsession if you will is 2 fold 1. the fact they don't break, unless they are mangled in some way. ok I admit the first one was dropped. the 3rd one had dead fans a dead headphone jack, a dead lid a dead modem at one stage and a dead dvd drive but thats about it. and it did not happen all at once. most of the issues came at its end life the other came at the beginning. This tecra has had its close calls but bar the keyboard and some stupid things to do with some recording software for a piece of semi broken hardware which I will not use anymore anyway its been ok. Every time it really breaks I almos go as far as calling someone to reformat but I usually fix it and then although bits don't work its like well its ok and I can do without most of this anyway. I like the fact the bios is accessable from the os though. even in the 1850 I could access it in dos as long as I had no 386 managers active. there was a brief period where in win9x time the manuals were not that accessible and before where I had no manual at all. But lately its all pdf which can be converted to text and its all ok. Support is mostly helpfull to and I havn't had any complaints. Now I wish toshiba made a desktop. I'd switch everyone over to that. Another thing I like about toshiba is its bios update, it will load the update disk say, then compair it with the bios currently loaded. In older units say the 1850 you had to boot to dos and run a program. with the newer units say the 310 and up you pushed a couple keys and it updated from a disk. lately you can only get the windows download but that does the same as the old versions. Also they do try to emulate the bios setup as closely to what appears in the os. firstly it was a program in dos then in win95-98 it was all a windows program now its a control panel. so I definately will stay with toshiba. Hi, Lol! That's for sure. I have never known anyone who likes to format as much as Shaun does. It is his personal obsession I think. Sometimes I'll do one once a year or so to make sure everything is in maximum working condition but that is backing up from images so generally that is a quick and easy process. Once I install the image I'll run any and all upgrades, make a new image, and go on. However, I think Shaun does it whenever and if ever he can just to do it. Poor computer. If I were it I'd die too from all the abuse. I managed to drop a laptop at the age of 15, but all that went was the keyboard which was pretty easily replaced, then At the age of 16, I had my first and only coffee related laptop incident, which I've been careful never to repeat. Ironically, according to the repair shot I took it to, only 8 k was deleted and once the innards had been dried it worked fine (I never actually discovered what had! in fact been deleted). Hi, Yeah, I'm a fan of Toshiba myself. Although, I haven't actually owned one I know plenty of people who do, have worked on them in the field, and they are ranked amung my favorite laptops. Actually tom, I can beat that. My old uni laptop, a toshiba was bought in 2000, and I used it up until 2006, and until i got my desktop in 2005, it was pretty much used for several hours every day. In fact the only thing that went on it was the fan (my dad actually started using it recently just to do basic word processing, though he's sinse bought a newer model and my old machine has been consigned to the dustbin of history). the most extreme though is my brother's Toshiba. He had his original machine stolen during a burglary in 1997, containing all the work for his A-levels. Dolphin physically built him one within 10 days (this was in the days when you couldn't install a program like supernova without assistance, so it was better done in the shop), and sent it out. he stopped using it as a main work machine in 2005, and sinse bought a smaller netbook as a basic note taker. however, my mum is stil! using that machine, complete with it's install of windows 95 as a word processer now, and it stil! works! Hi dark, Yeah, I've found laptops to be pretty rugged in design. My first laptop I purchased in 1998 and I used it clear up until 2004 or so when it was just too out of date to be practical any more. My next laptop was an Averitech 6200 which I recently sold to my dad, and it still works decently, but he upgraded it and now it works as good as new. A bit old as far as laptops go, but is still mostly good enough for day to day use. My current laptop is a Compaq 800 series notebook which I purchased in 2008 and I figure it will last me for a few more years yet. It runs Windows 7 just fine, and does everything I want it to do. The dvd burner died a while back, but I sent it in, got it serviced, and now it is as good as new. Smile. Hi Tom. Well bare in mind that I grew up carting laptops around in the days when it wasn't uncommon for a machine to have a floppy drive and cd drive as well, a full sized keyboard and a 15 inch screen, so my deffinitions of "slim line" are rather different to other peoples ;D. I'm currently using a toshiba I got in 2005. I'km not quite sure on ram etc, but I've yet to find an application it won't run, and though it doesn't have a dvd burner, it does have a very passable rewrite cd drive. In fact the only thing about it I find a pain is that it only has 32 gb of storage space, which practically means I can't keep my entire music and audio library on it, though i have got copies of all audio games. I did look at net books for interests' sake as much as anything, and because as far as past experience goes the operational life of a laptop I've found tends to be roughly 7 years, and I am taking my laptop around to various places, up and down the country on trains, to the Italian alps and even crusing down the Nile in egypt. I suspect whatever machine I buy next will simply be smaller, just by virtue of being smaller, but I have no intention of skimping on features. Indeed, probably the only feature I won't bother with is a screen, sinse I generally find below 21 inches is my limit for visible screen size, though of course I don't really need the screen for all that much anyway. Oh, and I hate! those mini keyboards with a pattion! I really don't think they were made with touch typing in mind, particularly not at the sort of speed I tend to type at. Beware the grue! Hi Dark, Exactly my point. I think far too often people mistake Netbooks for a type of inexpensive and slim line type of laptop which they are not. Oh, they are nice and handy if you are someone who needs to run standard day to day apps like Word, Excel, Quicken, Firefox, etc but beyond that you are pressing your luck. They have relatively small storage space, less memory, less CPU power, to say nothing of not coming with dvd burners, etc that comes with a real laptop computer. Netbooks really are nothing more and nothing less than a type of notetaker device. As for looking for a more slim line laptop, as you put it, I'm not really sure how feasable that is realistically. After all the difference between a laptop and a netbook computer can be quite different. For example, my laptop computer has a 3.6 GHZ processor, 2 GB of ram, a 160 GB hard drive, a 15 inch display, a dvd burner, etc. It is powerful enough to run about any program/application I want to run as well as do things like watch dvd movies which you can't do at all on a netbook. I know that some laptops have a home theater type feel to them so they come with 17 inch and even 19 inch displays for better visibility for people who like using their computer for watching movies or who want to play video games on their laptop. Obviously, having such a large display naturally makes the laptop unit much bigger and heavier to carry around. Netbooks on the other hand are not designed for video games and watching movies so can afford to get away with a much smaller screen, not have a full sized keyboard, not include a dvd player, etc. If you want small you can have it, but you also have to do without all of the bells and wistles so to speak.
