Does anyone know of a way to get it to work? I may or may not be able to help, but for starters we need a little more information to be able to diagnose the problem. First of all, what operating system are you using? Second, how do you define not working? Do you mean the font is not available (doesn't appear in the menu), or do you get poor results when you use it? And if it's the latter, please describe the results you get. Also, you said there are some other fonts that aren't working. Even if you never use them, it might be helpful to ask what distinguishes all the fonts that don't work from those that do. Paul Bloch wrote: So I've noticed that although there are different palettes for when you're placing text (text field, font selector) I can't find anyway to edit the size of the text! That's strange. Normally you can just select existing text with the text tool, which allows you to change the size. That's assuming that the text is still in its original state--a separate text layer. If you have merged it into another layer or applied transformations to it (e.g. scaling, rotation, etc.) then it has been converted to a graphical object, and you can no longer perform text operations on it. Re: [Gimp-user] Removing unwanted objects in photos
Dan Giel wrote: I am new to gimp and am having trouble removing unwanted objects from digital photos. I have tried CLONE, Erasure etc, but to no avail. Where can I go to find information to remove unwanted objects from pictures. Hope someone can help. Well, the first thing to consider is that, since your graphics are digital photos they don't contain any objects. They consist entirely of pixels in various colors. That may be stating the obvious, but the point is that since the picture is nothing but patches of color, any (semi-)automatic retouching tool is going to define objects according to its own rules, and how well that works will depend greatly on the kind of image you have and what kind of artifacts you're trying to remove. So it would be helpful if you'd explain more specifically what you are trying to do. But regarding the clone tool, I've always found it tremendously useful for photo retouching. Have you ever tried to type /path/to/whatever into a GTK+ file-chooser dialog? Can there be any less fuss? You mean GTK2? Okay, now I see that it works. But people like me who have been using GUIs since the mid-80s are accustomed to having a text entry widget to type into. Nonetheless, there happen to be people here who know something about this ;-) I'm confused. Are these parts of an ancient version of gtk (without +)? Well, it's pretty old. But AFAIK the lack of a + symbol doesn't mean anything. I believe the official name of the package as a whole is GTK+, though specific packagers (e.g. Linux distributions) sometimes omit the +, but in any case the actual shared libraries that get installed on your system don't have + in their names. At least they don't on my system, and I'm pretty sure it's not a meaningful distinction. And if so, where can I download the sources, as I would prefer to compile them myself? You should be able to find them via www.gtk.org. Just beware of replacing newer files with older ones. That *probably* won't happen, since you say you've got the latest GIMP etc. ... that implies you have GTK2 installed, so there shouldn't be any conflict. I can't find anything like ISO10646 fonts although I have ISO8859 fonts. Exactly. GIMP wants a Unicode font, but you don't have it. I suspect the GIMP is trying to select fonts based on your locale settings. I'm not up to date with this stuff, so I can't give you anything authoritative, but a good starting point in diagnosis might be to check your language settings. E.g. what does echo $LANG tell you? If it says, e.g., en_US.utf8 then that probably accounts for GIMP wanting an iso10646 font. If that is the case, then try running the GIMP from the command line with LANG=en_US gimp or perhaps LANG=en_US.iso8859-1 gimp [there are several ways to spell the encoding; you might have to play with it a bit] So, what if changing LANG does indeed solve the problem? There are several options: 1) Change the default LANG for your system ... this is the easiest solution, but could well cause problems with other applications. Best experiment thoroughly on yourself before inflicting this on anyone else. 2) Install/configure Unicode fonts as needed. 3) Create a wrapper script for the GIMP that does something like: export LANG=en_US exec /usr/bin/gimp And there are probably other solutions too ... I'm sure I'm missing something simple. which gimp are you using? and what does RHEL 3 mean? RHEL is Red Hat Enterprise Linux. gimp-2.whatever doesn't ask for fonts this way. There are several layers involved in font handling, so the error could be coming from a deeper level. However, I think you may be right anyway. The not-found font name is an XLFD (X Logical Font Descriptor); GIMP 2.x uses the newer Xft font mechanism. Re: [Gimp-user] Script-Fu - Batch Mode Problem
Quality is pretty subjective. After reading your messages, I resized some images with ImageMagick and the Gimp and I found an interesting thing: When I looked at the resized images without zooming, the ImageMagick-resized images looked sharper, clearer and showed finer detail than the Gimp-resized images, which looked softer and smoother (not really blurred, but definitely less detailed). Zoomed in, however, the Gimp images looked much better. It appears that the ImageMagick algorithm introduced a little pixelization that looks bad up close, but not only looks fine at 100%, but even produces some hints of lines that my eye interprets as fine details. The images I was playing with were of people, and the most obvious differences were visible in lines in hair, particularly bangs. Also, you may want to make sure that you were using the same quality settings for the JPEG encoding in your tests. Both Gimp and ImageMagick default to a quality setting of 75, I believe, but if you were saving your Gimp-resized images with a higher quality setting, that would create a false advantage. You can use -quality nn with ImageMagick, where nn is the quality setting you want to use. -- Shawn I definately agree that quality is subjective. I personally think that the images that I was producing with ImageMagick with good enough for the web. However, the client that i am doing all this fordoes not agree. The quality that they had been getting with another product was better than the ImageMagick Images but not as good as the Gimp images. However, it is a manually process that they want automated. I have tried using the --quality flag with the imagemagick implementation. However, It was still not up to the clients standards and the gimp image was still a cleaner image.Basically, Imagemagick is not an option for us. [Gimp-user] Script-Fu - Batch Mode Problem
Hello, I am having an issue with a Script that I have written being called from the command line. Here is what I am trying to do. I have written a script using Scheme that runs great when I have Gimp loaded up (ie not from the command line). No problems, does everything that I want. The real point of the script is to automate some image resizing from the command line. I know that many of you out there are going to point out that ImageMagick will do what I am looking for. I have already gone down that path and the image quality of the scaled images is not up to the quality that client wants. However, I can make a better, smaller image using Gimpnow I just need to make it completely automated. here is the rub. I have the script streamlined down and everything is set to be non-interactive. So i should just be able to pass in the variables and away we go My thinking is obviously flawed here as it doesn't quite work. here is how I am calling the script: gimp -b '(script-fu-automated-resize 1 200 200 /export/home/matt/toprocess/Imagein.jpg /export/home/matt/toprocess/Imageout.jpg)' '(gimp-quit 0)' The script takes in a height, width, beginning image and output image. I pass it a 1 before all of that for non-interactive. The script is designed to open the beginning image, resize accordingly, and then save to the output image. I get the following response. batch command: executed successfully. One would think that I should be able to check my system and I should see the end imagenopenada...nothing. If I change the option of 1 to 0 to run in interactive mode...I get the prompt for the default values of the script. Height, Width, Image to processfinal image. If I enter those in, click the ok buttonit runs like a champ. What am I missing? I have the non-interactive bit set on the file open which I assume is what is causing this dialog to pop up. Any ideas? tips? Pointer? References? Anyone already have a thumbnail script that works in this way that can shed some light on the subject? Re: [Gimp-user] Re: Script-Fu - Batch Mode Problem
Yeah...I have read that already and have gotten a ton of great tips on how to make things workbut I am still having the problem after all that is said and done. It appears that the script doesn't want to accept the parameters that I am passing in properly. This has been frustrating me for several days now so I am open to any suggestions.
