Hi, Im using a HP 840c deskjet and have had great results in printing images
etc... from gimp and my linux box. Being an older HP model drivers are
readily available and its also fairly cheap if thats a consideration :).
Although the cartridges are a bit pricey they seem to last quite a long
time. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm using Slackware 7.1 with Gimp 1.1.28 and I can print fine with my
BJC 250.
However I setup system print services with the program apsfilter
(www.apsfilter.org). I don't know what effect this may have on printing
and gimp (and I don't know if Mandrake uses a BSD-like print setup.),
but you may want to try apsfilter.

Hope this provides some help. (and I'm sorry if it doesn't)

anybody had any experience with this? It prints a

and power the printer on and off a couple of times and
they still keep coming.

Anyone have any ideas?

Rebecca,

I'm running 1.0.4. I do get the dialog box and I can specify printer (or
file), orientation, and paper size. I have no choices for media type or
media source, and I set scaling to 100% (the default).

Now, when I try it again, I'm stymied by another problem. The printer
tells me to load plain paper in tray 1 (for single-sheet feeding), so I do
it. It then sits for a while and tells me to remove the media in tray 1!

  Something is really screwy here.

Printing a full page/full image

2000-10-09 Thread Rich Shepard

I'm trying to print a .jpg image from GIMP, but I get only about 1/4 of
the image centered on the page.

When I use the file menu exposed by right-clicking on the image, I get the
lower, left quarter of the image. If I send the file to the printer from the
command line, I get the upper, left quarter. What I'd really like to have on
the page is the entire image, not 1/4 of it centered. I would also like to
be able to specify 11" x 17" paper on my HP 2500C instead of the default
8.5" x 11" paper. I know that I can specify paper size when I print from
CUPS, but can I do this from within the GIMP, too?

  Pointers, please?

I've printed to 14" (length), as well as wide envelopes on my Epson 440,
but what I did was create a separate printers in my /etc/printcap that
had the page sizes defined this way. I then just select to print to

printing 1.1.24

2000-07-19 Thread Wandered Inn

Tried 1.1.?? some while ago, couldn't print so I went back to 1.0.4.
Just upgraded to 1.1.24. Still have questions regarding printing. The
first two buttons in the print dialog are:

file Setup

'file' appears to be a dropdown, but nothing drops, so I can not select
anything else.

If I select a printer from Setup, I get another dialog which enables me
to select:

a printer driver (okay, although the options are limited
PPD File: Not sure what this is for...
Command: followed by nothing (???)

I selected a suitable printer driver and closed this dialog.

Then select the print button, I'm prompted with a dialog box looking for
a file name.

So, how do I print???

Printing

2000-07-08 Thread Dennis Kent

I found the answer to this on this list last year. I
didn't need it then, I need it now, though.

How do I get the Gimp to print? The 1.0.4 RPM and
source versions only allowed me to print to a file.
Same with the 1.1.24 I am using now.

Before, I eventually got one of the 1.0.4 versions to
print properly, but I can't remember how.

One of my major uses for the Gimp is to print out
postcards, so it is imperative that I get it working
again. I really hate the thought of booting windows
and using my old Corel Photo-Paint (although the Linux
version looks pretty good).

is this a Linux machine? Those Lexmark low-end printers are WinPrinters
(using special win op codes and the CPU to do a lot of their work) which
is why they are cheap. There is very very basic rudimentary support for a

gimp 1.1.22 and printing

Just installed gimp 1.1.22 and sane. When I select file->print none of
my printers show up in the drop down printers box. If I select setup,
there's a list of printers as well as postscript 1 or 2 options. Still
no way to associate any of these printers with my existing printers.
What gives? 1.0.4 gimp automagically recognized both lp and lp0
printers I've got setup.

When you select print, select Setup. Your lpr command will be defined
there. The option you pass to lpr for multiple copies is '-#N' where N
is the number of copies.

Unfortunately, you'll need to change it back once you're done printing
your N copies, otherwise it will print N copies from that point on.

Re: Printing multiple copies

2000-05-05 Thread Jon Winters

The "down and dirty" way of doing this would be to increase the canvas to
the proper size so that it would take an entire printed page and then past
copies of your image in a 4-up or 2-up arrangement.

Example for a 300 DPI printer:

Make a new canvas 2400x3000 (8x10 inches on your printer)

Paste in copies of your image and arrange them so they fit nicely.

Send it to the printer.

You were probably looking for an automated way of doing this and there may
indeed be a script or something but this is how I do it.

Enjoy!

Oh yeah... I've been getting a LOT better results from printroom.com than
I ever dreamed of from my inkjet printer.

Checkit:

They make real photographic prints from your digital images. Lots of fun.

Ghostscript 7.0 (mid-2000, testing probably starting in Q2 of 2000) will
support the PostScript DeviceN color space, which will allow drivers to have
inks other than the primaries and make those inks visible at the PostScript
level. However, it appears that what you want is to convert a standard
color space (maybe a CIE space) for rendering with a set of inks that may
have unusual properties. Unfortunately, PostScript currently provides no
way to do this -- when rendering a CIE color, the only supported output
color spaces are DeviceRGB and DeviceCMYK. I consider this a shocking
oversight, and I expected it to be fixed in PostScript LanguageLevel 3, but
it wasn't. I suspect that Adobe intends to use ICCBased color spaces for
this (see below).

Ghostscript 7.0 will also almost certainly support ICCBased color spaces.
These are not yet part of PostScript LanguageLevel 3, but they are part of
PDF 1.3, and I expect them to show up in Adobe PostScript release 3012.
(This is a pure guess, I have no inside knowledge about this.) I am not
familiar enough with the ICC color profile specification to know whether
this requires adding support for arbitrary device color spaces, but I would
expect that it does.

If you would like to discuss further the applicability of Ghostscript to
your project, please feel free to e-mail me privately, or to continue the
discussion on this list, whichever you prefer.

Interesting site. BTW, I've put a new version of my version of the
Gimp print plugin (originally written by Mike Sweet) in
http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/print.tar.gz (requires 1.1.10).

My plugin does 6-color output (for the Stylus Photo 700/EX), and it's
heavily tunable (contrast, brightness, saturation, gamma correction,
two methods of generating the lookup table, RGB levels). It should
handle inks with different color balances reasonably well. What it
doesn't do yet:

1) Save interesting settings

2) Allow definition and saving of particular sets of settings

3) Use software weaving (it uses MicroWeave, which generates some
banding in the output and is slow)

4) Lots of cleanup

I still don't understand why you've had problems with this plugin,
though; it works fine for me.

Try setting the gimp's print plug-in to one of the HP Deskjet options
instead of Postscript (in the printer dialog, choose setup, then in that
dialog, choose an appropriate driver - I believe theres an HP Deskjet 600
