Netview Messaging (was: System automation subplexing )
Kevin, Life would be a lot simpler if products running on z/OS all issued messages through the operating system message service, but many -- especially NetView (and exploited by the applications riding on top of NetView) -- have their own, subject to their own rules, as you have discovered. Notify operators have been in NetView for a very long time, so I suspect you will have very little chance of changing their behavior. A better strategy might be to persuade System Automation to issue the message as an operating system WTO rather than using the NetView service. The thing is that whatever issues the messages is sensitive to the underlying operating system (or not, as the case my be). We started to discover messages going to the netlog (networks netview, as opposed to aoflog - automation netview) when we migrated to SA/390 V3.1 (from 2.3). z/OS was 1.6, NetView was 5.1. My networks colleage grumbled, but it didn't have impact (other than the same messages appearing in every last one of his EMCS consoles). Now we are forced to use automation subplexing (which according to IBM we implemented correctly), but Automation messages (most notably aof100i, issued every ten minutes, but others, too) not only appears in netlog, it also appears in the aoflog of the other subplex, where it might have quite a lot of undesired results. These are only messages issued by automation on the z/OS 1.6 system, when the notify operator was not logged on or deleted. Last week we had that system upgraded to z/OS 1.8, too, to make an all-1.8 sysplex. No notify op logged on. In that case, the message appeared where it should, and only there - in the correct automation netview and in syslog of that system. While SYSOPS ctracing this message, I also discovered the DIDOCS EMCS console. Once a notify op is logged on (under z/OS 1.6), the message is NOT issued via WTO at all! (It is issued via WTO under z/OS 1.8, regardless of the notify op being logged on or off). But when under 1.6 no notify op is logged on, it is basically broadcast (the broadcast and info flags were on in the WQE) to all active EMCS consoles that have these attributes (I believe that includes all SDSF default consoles and also many automation/netview consoles). And I am making no progress whatsoever to get IBM to see that (and I think the ETR has already more than 72 pages) and take action against it. Re: VSAM in extents
John, For your first paragraph, lets just put it with all those other extent myths. I mean, for sequential access you're just reading the sequence set anyway - what is there to flush!!! Striping sequential datasets can definitely speed up sequential access, but you may need to experiment with the BUFND number that gives you the best results for the combination of stripes and CISZ you use. There is no need to spread stripes across LCU or LSS. It would be more important to spread the STORGRUP evenly across the Bays, Parity Groups and Cache-Halves to give ESS the best chance of pre-fetching from disk faster than the channels request it. A person here has stated that when a VSAM KSDS file is in multiple extents, it performs more poorly than it would in a single contigueous extent. He said something to the effect that when a portion of the index is referenced which is in another extent that the entire in-memory buffer for the file is flushed. I have no idea where he got this information. Also, he wants to use SMS striping for VSAM files which are mainly accessed sequentially because it would significantly decrease the I/O time to read. We are using multiple FICON connections to a single 2105 ESS (Shark). We do not have the volumes in any storage group spread across LCUs. My contention is that it may well decrease I/O, but it would require that we likewise stripe the volumes across the 2105's LCUs as well. We don't do this at present. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

BTW: z/OS provides even bigger mess. MUCH BIGGER! Example: I just allocated TEST.FILE. PS FB 80. Edited, put exactly *one* character. Of course one character occupies entire 80-byte record. ISPF shows current allocation 54kBytes (binary or decimal???), current utilization shows 27kB. All right, this is because SDB (System Determined Blocksize) and 3390 geometry. So I allocated TEST.FILE2. PS F 80, no B. Put one character. Now I have allocation of 6kBytes (for one record ???), current utilization is 1kByte. All we know it takes whole track. Upgrading the processor
Hello everyone, I have a question to ask of the group. I currently have an IBM7060 H75 processor running OS 390 2.10. We are currently going into our sixth year of a two year phase out of the mainframe. Since everything is non supported management is looking into upgrading the processor to a 2096 R07 (F02) box and operating system to the latest ZOS version, since it now looks like it would be another two to three years before can be converted off. If I can come up with a list of jufitications for upgrading the processor and operating system. The system then might be taken off the endangered species list. 1. SOX hardware and software compliance. 2. All software will be vendor supported. 3. Installation of ZVM which would allow us to run LINUX on the box. 4. SOX hardware and software compliance. 2. All software will be vendor supported. 3. Installation of ZVM which would allow us to run LINUX on the box. 4. All new applications to be considered to on the platform. Thanks for any information that I can get. SNIP Frank: Depending on how you are using the MP3000, you will have to obtain external DASD to go to the new box. There are no more data center in a box systems from IBM. With z/OS 1.8, you will be able to use an external time reference (NOT an ETR) and provide time services to your LAN (assuming a z/9 and I'm not up on model numbers these days, so a 2096 could be one). The z box you get will probably be more than the 60MIPs (roughly) that you have today. It should be able to run Unix System Services and provide services that other boxes do, but will be able to recover in a disaster faster. Having been in this type of environment, I made sure that for every DR drill the mainframe recovered in the allotted time (hey it was the cash box for the companies involved), while their other platforms were having this or that problem with getting connectivity to their SAN, getting the O/S loaded, getting the applications re-installed, etc. (gotta love that Registry from M/$). Something to think about. It sounds like you currently have some process (change control?) that updates libraries and always does the LLACOPY just in case. So is it a problem if it gets RC=4 on LLACOPY? It probably would be more overhead to check first and not issue the LLACOPY (if it is overhead you are trying to prevent). If you don't have a special CSVLLAxx member in your shop, then you can just assume only libraries in the LNKLST are LLA managed (since that is the default). If you do - and have a parmlib naming standard or consistent CSALLAxx member name between systems, perhaps you can just look at the CSVLLAxx member in parmlib to get the library list if you don't want to use the undocumented control blocks. Re: Upgrading the processor
Actually, for what it's worth, the H55 and H75 had nothing to do with IFLs or anything else. Andthey weren't MP3000 style machines either. Several years ago we upgraded from a 9672-R16 to an MP3000 7060-H50. Actually a lateral move as they were the same horsepower. Software and maintenance savings allowed me to buy the H50 new for less than buying the used R16 I had on the floor. Later I found out about the H55 and H75. The H55 was essentially a 9672-R16 rebranded and the H75 was a 9672-R26. At least that's what the IBM business partner told us - after it was too late to try to talk IBM into giving me GOLC pricing on my R16 and just call it a 7060-H55. Back to the original poster asking about how to justify the upgrade to a 2096 machine: I was able to do exactly the same thing switching from my 7060 (bought and paid for) to a 2096 by pointing out the maintenance and software savings. These two items alone allowed me to show mgmt a 18 month complete payback period with everything after that pure gravy. Don't forget to look at the sub-capacity pricing as well if you're not running the box flat out. Re: Question about the listserv
Tom In the early days of my using the list I quickly encountered the problem of the rejection of a post so carefully and painstakingly constructed. I was informed by some kind person - trying to give credit on the basis of feeble memory it may have been John Giltner - that I needed to discard the three lines starting For IBM-MAIN ... which the system slaps onto the bottom of each distributed post. As long as I do this, only some excessively verbose posts of mine - caused possibly by excessive quoting of some, one hopes, relevant technical material I happened to have created over the years and had the wit to retain - fall foul of the IBM-MAIN system - in transit that is! It's possible this point is covered in the FAQ to which you were referred but, taking a quick, glance I didn't spot it. Melissa, If you have SDSF, then you can see if the jobs completed output processing by doing an ST in SDSF, then issue SORT Q this sorts based on the QUEUE name. Then look for $MASCOMM BPXASSTC01409 OMVSKERN 15 EXECUTION $MASCOMM STC115 PRINT A 1 OPERLOG STC05346 OPERLOG 1 PRINT2 Usually if a job is held while it is executing you will see it between the last job on the EXECUTION queue and the $MASCOMM task. While IBM is quite happy pointing out you no longer need to purchase a $40K Timex to keep your machine synched with the rest of the planet, they aren't as quick to point out the firmware required to enable the ETR features is about $25K. At this point in time, it's about a 20 year payback to justify getting rid of the 9037. We'll revisit this the next time we do a machine upgrade. It's supposedly cheaper to order the box with the ETR firmware than to try to upgrade. -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

I decided to take a bit of action. Here is the email I sent to Mr. Palmisano: - For years the mainframe was THE machine to have because it worked. Lots of effort went into that, one of the things being that from release to release the quality (RAS) had to improve for hardware as well as software. Now IBM has decided to dump a system that was solid - the 3270 based IBMLink to go to a web based system that just can't seem to run for any length of time without crashing. It has been down all day today. It is IBM's preferred method of problem reporting, but it is unstable. I thought you might want to know that this is becoming a bone of contention among SHARE members. - So gripe here all you want. If 1 SP was hired from outside 3 years ago no jobs out there for over 6 months, then there is no 'shortage'. In mid 80s, one site in OZ hired 8 M/F people from South Africa paid for relocation/visa/etc, also one could find a job in 3 months then, because there was a shortage then. Based on this, I'd say there isn't much demand in Australia, US, west-EU for sysprogs. Or you were not looking to much. When the agencies say they only hire people with EU passport; or in case of Swiss, it takes 2 months to get a visa but client wants someone now, to me this means 'no shortage'.
