Netview Messaging (was: System automation subplexing )

2007-07-30 Thread Barbara Nitz
Kevin,
Life would be a lot simpler if products running on z/OS all issued
messages through the operating system message service, but many --
especially NetView (and exploited by the applications riding on top of
NetView) -- have their own, subject to their own rules, as you have
discovered.

Notify operators have been in NetView for a very long time, so I suspect
you will have very little chance of changing their behavior. A better
strategy might be to persuade System Automation to issue the message as
an operating system WTO rather than using the NetView service.

The thing is that whatever issues the messages is sensitive to the underlying
operating system (or not, as the case my be). We started to discover messages
going to the netlog (networks netview, as opposed to aoflog - automation
netview) when we migrated to SA/390 V3.1 (from 2.3). z/OS was 1.6, NetView was
5.1. My networks colleage grumbled, but it didn't have impact (other than the
same messages appearing in every last one of his EMCS consoles).
Now we are forced to use automation subplexing (which according to IBM we
implemented correctly), but Automation messages (most notably aof100i, issued
every ten minutes, but others, too) not only appears in netlog, it also appears
in the aoflog of the other subplex, where it might have quite a lot of
undesired results. These are only messages issued by automation on the z/OS 1.6
system, when the notify operator was not logged on or deleted.
Last week we had that system upgraded to z/OS 1.8, too, to make an all-1.8
sysplex. No notify op logged on. In that case, the message appeared where it
should, and only there - in the correct automation netview and in syslog of
that system. While SYSOPS ctracing this message, I also discovered the DIDOCS
EMCS console.
Once a notify op is logged on (under z/OS 1.6), the message is NOT issued via
WTO at all! (It is issued via WTO under z/OS 1.8, regardless of the notify op
being logged on or off).
But when under 1.6 no notify op is logged on, it is basically broadcast (the
broadcast and info flags were on in the WQE) to all active EMCS consoles that
have these attributes (I believe that includes all SDSF default consoles and
also many automation/netview consoles).
And I am making no progress whatsoever to get IBM to see that (and I think the
ETR has already more than 72 pages) and take action against it.
Regards, Barbara

Re: VSAM in extents

2007-07-30 Thread Ron Hawkins
John,

For your first paragraph, lets just put it with all those other extent
myths. I mean, for sequential access you're just reading the sequence set
anyway - what is there to flush!!!

Striping sequential datasets can definitely speed up sequential access, but
you may need to experiment with the BUFND number that gives you the best
results for the combination of stripes and CISZ you use.

There is no need to spread stripes across LCU or LSS. It would be more
important to spread the STORGRUP evenly across the Bays, Parity Groups and
Cache-Halves to give ESS the best chance of pre-fetching from disk faster
than the channels request it.

I'm curious about this one. A person here has stated that when a VSAM
KSDS file is in multiple extents, it performs more poorly than it would
in a single contigueous extent. He said something to the effect that
when a portion of the index is referenced which is in another extent
that the entire in-memory buffer for the file is flushed. I have no idea
 where he got this information.

Also, he wants to use SMS striping for VSAM files which are mainly
accessed sequentially because it would significantly decrease the I/O
time to read. We are using multiple FICON connections to a single 2105
ESS (Shark). We do not have the volumes in any storage group spread
across LCUs. My contention is that it may well decrease I/O, but it
would require that we likewise stripe the volumes across the 2105's LCUs
as well. We don't do this at present.

55, 1KB (is this 1024 or 1000 bytes?), or 4096 bytes.

I still don't see how Microsoft caused 'binary-decimal' mess of kB. They
simply use existing convention.

BTW: z/OS provides even bigger mess. MUCH BIGGER!
Example:
I just allocated TEST.FILE. PS FB 80. Edited, put exactly *one*
character. Of course one character occupies entire 80-byte record.
ISPF shows current allocation 54kBytes (binary or decimal???), current
utilization shows 27kB.
All right, this is because SDB (System Determined Blocksize) and 3390
geometry.

So I allocated TEST.FILE2. PS F 80, no B. Put one character. Now I have
allocation of 6kBytes (for one record ???), current utilization is
1kByte. All we know it takes whole track.

Compared to that Windows Explorer is pretty clear.

Upgrading the processor

2007-07-30 Thread Sabo, Frank
Hello everyone,

I have a question to ask of the group.

I currently have an IBM7060 H75 processor running OS 390 2.10. We are
currently going into our sixth year of a two year phase out of the
mainframe.
Since everything is non supported management is looking into upgrading
the processor to a 2096 R07 (F02) box and operating system to the latest
ZOS version, since it now looks like it would be another two to three
years before can be converted off. If I can come up with a list of
jufitications for upgrading the processor and operating system. The
system then might be taken off the endangered species list.

1. SOX hardware and software compliance.
2. All software will be vendor supported.
3. Installation of ZVM which would allow us to run LINUX on
the box.
4. All new applications to be considered to on the
platform.

Thanks for any information that I can get.

Re: Searching an utility to Query if a library is LLA managed

There is a SYSDSN enqueue on the dataset for the LLA address space when it is
allocated to LLA. Perhaps that can be a starting point for you. Tools such as
TASID (IBM) or WHOHAS (DA$ENQS from Dave's MVS freeware website).

Subject: Upgrading the processor

Hello everyone,

I have a question to ask of the group.=20

SNIP

Frank:

Depending on how you are using the MP3000, you will have to obtain
external DASD to go to the new box. There are no more data center in a
box systems from IBM.

With z/OS 1.8, you will be able to use an external time reference (NOT
an ETR) and provide time services to your LAN (assuming a z/9 and I'm
not up on model numbers these days, so a 2096 could be one).

The z box you get will probably be more than the 60MIPs (roughly) that
you have today. It should be able to run Unix System Services and
provide services that other boxes do, but will be able to recover in a
disaster faster.

Having been in this type of environment, I made sure that for every DR
drill the mainframe recovered in the allotted time (hey it was the cash
box for the companies involved), while their other platforms were having
this or that problem with getting connectivity to their SAN, getting the
O/S loaded, getting the applications re-installed, etc. (gotta love that
Registry from M/$). Something to think about.

Steve Thompson

Please also see Timothy Sipples' email on this list:

Re: some basic questions about Z system, Zlinux

Among other things he says:

Zlinux : A linux which is compiled for Z Architecture, whether 31 bit
or
64 bit. like Slack, Suse or centOS

No, Slackware, Novell SuSE, and CentOS are Linux distributions. All three of
those distributions are available for System z. The preferred generic term for
Linux running on these systems is Linux on System z.

Nothing that is GUPI that *I* know of. You can borrow code from
ShowMVS if you want to see how to get at the list via undocumented
control blocks.

Can you explain the exact issue / problem? It sounds like you currently have
some process (change control?) that updates libraries and always does the
LLACOPY just in case. So is it a problem if it gets RC=4 on LLACOPY?
It probably would be more overhead to check first and not issue the
LLACOPY (if it is overhead you are trying to prevent).

If you don't have a special CSVLLAxx member in your shop, then you can
just assume only libraries in the LNKLST are LLA managed (since that is
the default). If you do - and have a parmlib naming standard or consistent
CSALLAxx member name between systems, perhaps you can just look at
the CSVLLAxx member in parmlib to get the library list if you don't want
to use the undocumented control blocks.

Re: Upgrading the processor

2007-07-30 Thread Pommier, Rex R.
Actually, for what it's worth, the H55 and H75 had nothing to do with
IFLs or anything else. Andthey weren't MP3000 style machines
either. Several years ago we upgraded from a 9672-R16 to an MP3000
7060-H50. Actually a lateral move as they were the same horsepower.
Software and maintenance savings allowed me to buy the H50 new for less
than buying the used R16 I had on the floor. Later I found out about
the H55 and H75. The H55 was essentially a 9672-R16 rebranded and the
H75 was a 9672-R26. At least that's what the IBM business partner told
us - after it was too late to try to talk IBM into giving me GOLC
pricing on my R16 and just call it a 7060-H55.

Back to the original poster asking about how to justify the upgrade to a
2096 machine: I was able to do exactly the same thing switching from my
7060 (bought and paid for) to a 2096 by pointing out the maintenance and
software savings. These two items alone allowed me to show mgmt a 18
month complete payback period with everything after that pure gravy.
Don't forget to look at the sub-capacity pricing as well if you're not
running the box flat out.

Rex

see 2.0MB on 3.5 diskettes, those which we use as 1.44MB. I know,
there are ways to use non-standard format and have more than 1.44MB, but
it was never 2.0MB (usually 1.68-1.72 MB).

Please don't write noone. It's as irritating as Your right. But
the Internet seems to be changing our spelling.

Diskettes are no longer important, but there are lots of variations in
CD, DvD, and HD DvD capacity.

Also, z/OS is the current evolution of the original IBM operating system
that came out in the 1960s. It has gone from MFT to MVT to SVS to MVS
to MVS/XA to MVS/ESA and now z/OS. Over the years it has continued to
improve and keep up with the times.

Re: Damaged Catalog Alert

2007-07-30 Thread Darth Keller
A head's up to the non-ECS shops regarding OA19870. IBM just reopened
my
ETR query on this APAR with the following update:

I wanted to let you know that we will be changing the text of APAR
OA19870 to now also include that this apar should be applied to systems
that have catalogs with shareoptions (3,4). If you are sharing any of
your catalogs, even without ECS, we are now suggesting that you apply
the APAR.

We've had to delay applying this maintenance until the end of August
because of applications requirements. Our work-around was to remove all
our catalogs from ECS until then. But this sounds to me like I'm still at
risk for this problem even though we're no longer using ECS. If that's
true, I'm not comfortable waiting until the end of August and I think I'm
going to get the priority on this bumped up.

thanks for the heads up!

LOCATING THE JOB STEP PROGRAM OF ANOTHER ADDRESS SPACE

2007-07-30 Thread Paul D'Angelo
Hi,

Is there a proper method for locating the Program specified on the EXEC
JCL card from another Address Space ?
I can locate the ASVT via the CVT.
I can scan through the ASCBs and Command Scheduling Chain looking for a
specifc job/procedure name.
But what I would really like to locate is the Program Specified on the
EXEC=pgm card from  the JCL.

I know I can always find the Programs in a DUMP via the Contents
Directory.
However I have not been able to trace that back to the ASCB or TCB or
JSCB.
I suspect this information is located in the JSCB but Where ?

Does any one Now of a callable service or maco that will locate the Job
Step Program for
another address space ?

What Control Blocks must I naviagate to locate the Job Step Program for
another Address Space ?

Re: Question about the listserv

2007-07-30 Thread Chris Mason

Tom

In the early days of my using the list I quickly encountered the problem of
the rejection of a post so carefully and painstakingly constructed. I was
informed by some kind person - trying to give credit on the basis of feeble
memory it may have been John Giltner - that I needed to discard the three
lines starting For IBM-MAIN ... which the system slaps onto the bottom of
each distributed post.

As long as I do this, only some excessively verbose posts of mine - caused
possibly by excessive quoting of some, one hopes, relevant technical
material I happened to have created over the years and had the wit to
retain - fall foul of the IBM-MAIN system - in transit that is!

It's possible this point is covered in the FAQ to which you were referred
but, taking a quick, glance I didn't spot it.

Not for current versions of the mainframe software, but you can install
Hercules and use Volker Bandeke's turnkey MVS 3.8 package.

Step information is where you'd expect it to be, in the Step
Control Table (IIRC, mapping macro is IEFASCT). It's pointed to
by the JSCB (either address, or a token to be resolved with
SWAREQ). However, if you're going into other address spaces, you
could hit it during a step change, in which case you might see
misleading results.

The jobs were HELD prior to completing output processing. Most likely $HJ

Try releasing the jobs $AJ(). They should then appear on the hard copy
queue where you can purge them which will allow the spool volumes to drain.

Re: Jes spool deletion question

2007-07-30 Thread Lizette Koehler
Melissa,

If you have SDSF, then you can see if the jobs completed output processing
by doing an ST in SDSF, then issue SORT Q this sorts based on the QUEUE
name.

Then look for $MASCOMM

  BPXASSTC01409 OMVSKERN 15 EXECUTION
  $MASCOMM STC115 PRINT A 1
  OPERLOG STC05346 OPERLOG 1 PRINT2

Usually if a job is held while it is executing you will see it between the
last job on the EXECUTION queue and the $MASCOMM task. It will have OUTPUT
where you see EXECUTION. All you need to do is either purge it here, or
release it.

The 2096 is indeed a z9.

Be careful about the ETR stuff. We just went through an exercise with IBM
looking to dump our 9037-002. While IBM is quite happy pointing out you no
longer need to purchase a $40K Timex to keep your machine synched with the
rest of the planet, they aren't as quick to point out the firmware required to
enable the ETR features is about $25K.

At this point in time, it's about a 20 year payback to justify getting rid of
the
9037. We'll revisit this the next time we do a machine upgrade. It's supposedly
cheaper to order the box with the ETR firmware than to try to upgrade.

Wouldn't it be better for EVERYONE on the list, if you would add Gould to
your scan software and reject everything.

There are three senders that I never see anymore.
One talks about all the conspiracies.
One is very bitter and pedantically corrects everybody.
And, the third quotes a web-site wherein they did everything on the mainframes
first.

Hi all,

We are guests in the home of Darren, Ed, UA. House rules are always
the last word.

Darren does a lot of work on IBM-MAIN that I am sure is not in his job
description and I don't expect he gets any slack on everything that is.

I find Darren's extra work make the list more usable. It is a very
noisy list already if he were not actively working to screem some of the
garbage out it might become useless.

Darren please know we appreciate all the work! Just ignore Ed the rest
of us have been doing that for a long time...Thanks for the constant
upkeep on IBM-MAIN!

Thanks, Sam

That's pretty harsh. And untrue. Many of us have learned from Ed's
recollections and his contributions to historic threads have been useful. One
of
his contributions was just recently brought up again in regards to SHARE in
looking for snubbing targets and the fine art of snubbery. I always thought I
would be happy just finishing my life knowing I made a contribution. Just think
if I were able to go down in history as inventing an activity that carries on
for
generations !!! Think about it. When was that first mention of snubbery ??? I
could look it up in the archives, but I'm on a roll and don't want to lose my
train of thought.

This could be the start of a new genre of posts. The next time IBM Link quits
working or sun spots disrupt your radio station signal, send a post with the
subject Darren's Picking On Me Again and we'll have some fun.

You just never know when you can make history. Let's try to keep it civil and
have as much fun as possible.

 I was
informed by some kind person - trying to give credit on the basis of
feeble
memory it may have been John Giltner - that I needed to discard the three
lines starting For IBM-MAIN ... which the system slaps onto the bottom
of
 each distributed post.

I have found this to be true also, through trial and error.

As we gray, we'll be looking for a new list owner eventually. If you've
never tried it, it's sincerely aggravating. Having to put up with the whining
and
moaning 'cause it's not the way they do it over on list or don't do this or
that. IBM-Main had been here since 6 June 1986 and has struggled thru numerous
OS's and Lsoft upgrades. To my knowledge there's never been a pointer at an
individual. It's blanket rules, subject to change as the software sea ebbs
and flows. Decisions as to what to keep and how to keep are at Darren's
discretion.

In the big picture it's grown into a fairly respectable place to get or
report
Mainframe related topics affecting business, individuals and .EDUs. The mix
of developers internal and external make it fairly unique place to plant and
sow ideas and knowledge. I've sure learned a lot and bit my tongue 'cause
somebody
had an idea I'd though of but never got around to. Long may she wave..

Re: IBMLink SEV 1 OUTAGE AGAIN!!! #32644395

2007-07-30 Thread Thompson, Steve
I decided to take a bit of action. Here is the email I sent to Mr.
Palmisano:

-
For years the mainframe was THE machine to have because it worked. Lots
of effort went into that, one of the things being that from release to
release the quality (RAS) had to improve for hardware as well as
software.

Now IBM has decided to dump a system that was solid - the 3270 based
IBMLink to go to a web based system that just can't seem to run for any
length of time without crashing.

It has been down all day today. It is IBM's preferred method of problem
reporting, but it is unstable.

I thought you might want to know that this is becoming a bone of
contention among SHARE members.
-

So gripe here all you want. You can use the IBM web site to make your
own comments:

There is an Italian word, 'dietrologia', that I have mentioned here before.
'Dietro' means 'behind', both literally and figuratively, in Italian; and
dietrologia is the pseudo-science of what is really going on in the world,
what always sinister machinations lie behind appearances.

But if 500 are looking for jobs 100 have not worked for over 1
year, SPs are forced into retirement at 50, then that's not much of a

demand.

I should have used the term 'shortage' not demand.

hire people from other countries.

It happens in Poland.

If 1 SP was hired from outside 3 years ago no jobs out there for
over 6 months, then there is no 'shortage'.

In mid 80s, one site in OZ hired 8 M/F people from South Africa paid
for relocation/visa/etc, also one could find a job in 3 months then,
because there was a shortage then.

Based on this, I'd say there isn't much demand in Australia, US,
west-EU for sysprogs.

Or you were not looking to much.

When the agencies say they only hire people with EU passport; or in
case of Swiss, it takes 2 months to get a visa but client wants someone
now, to me this means 'no shortage'.
