Hey Guys,
I don't work as steady as I would like on the Dr. Dean air frame but made a
good day today. I got the bottom side of the left wing glassed. So this week I
should be able to remount it to the air frame and cut out th aileron. That will
let me finish controls up on the left side and then move to the right. I wish I
had the energy I had when I started the first plane when I was 38...

I think all you have to do is shim up the main gear until level. The shims will
be counted as part of your "Tare" as well as wheel chocks.

Re: KR> Progress and question

2018-09-07 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
Steph,

It is a great question. I my opinion your location is fine. Neutral or slight
positive is a good thing for takeoffs and landing. Any negative angle would be
bad. For weighing the aircraft - the plane should be level.

With a slight nose up, you will have less pressure on the stick to elevate the
nose during takeoff. If it was below level you could have to exert extra
pressure to get out of the negative angle and could cause a "wheel barrow"
effect. More force on the main gear is fine, but not the nose gear.

A positive angle is also better for soft field take offs. Keeping the nose up
is critical on soft field takeoffs. A positive angle also helps on landing as
a positive pitch reduces the potential to "slam down" the nose after landing -
and put undo force on the nose gear. You should always try to keep the nose up
on landing anyway, but a positive angle will help.

Only potential negative is the added drag induced by the slight nose up during
the take off role. I don't think 10 mm is going to cause you any significant
issues. Neutral would be best for minimal drag.

Thanks,

Rob Schmitt

Steph,

I don't know whether the fuselage will need to be level or not. For take off,
I don't think it would be a problem unless the nose is going to stay on the
ground and cause a shimmy. However, my bigger concern would be whether you
will be able to land on the mains and not be bumping the nose gear at the same
time. Maybe one of the nosedragger pilots on here can contribute their
opinion. Seems to me Rob Scmitt's KR would be a good example of a Stock KR-2S
nosedragger configuration, so perhaps he can offer a better opinion than me
based on his experience. Rob, would it matter on landing if your nose gear was
an inch taller? Would that create too much abuse to the nose on landing? What
about on takeoff? Would that keep the nose on the ground too long and
potentially create a shimmy issue? I suspect not, but perhaps Rob can give us
his opinion?

Good Job.  Charging systems can be challenging at times.  I dialed my system to 14.2V, but 13.8 should be sufficient.  I am starting to get some funky noise from my charging system that wasn't there when I installed it 2 years ago.  Not quite sure what's up with that.  I have also changed headsets, so this headset may be more sensitive to the various noises in the system.  Who knows?  I guess I'll have to go through the charging system to do some shielding and check connections when I have it down for annual this spring.  Will also be installing a new transponder, so it's not going to be an inexpensive annual.  In the mean time, I've been flying the socks off the planes.  I put 3 hrs on the KR in the previous 2 days, and put an hour on the Cub today (took Larry Howell out for an aireal tour of this area).  Also flew the Cub to breakfast last weekend and flew the KR over to Branson the week before.

Best regards,

-Jeff

I've had concerns about my voltage regulator since I installed it maybe
100 or so hours ago.  I run an analog gauge so accurate read not really
possible but it always kept the batteries charged with a low amp read.
I put in a small digital gauge recently and confirmed the low voltage
read, at most about 13.2V in cruise.  I called B&C to confirm the exact
tool I needed to adjust and they indicated a slotted screwdriver.
Trouble was the adjustment hole was sealed with some kind of crap I
couldn't dig out, hot glue or something.  I decided to exit my recliner
this afternoon and try it again.  I had probably spent 30 minutes in the
past trying to dig the stuff out without success.  Today I removed the
regulator from the firewall to rotate to a better work angle while not
removing any wiring.  Success!  With a dental pick and 20 minutes of
effort the adjusting screw revealed itself.  Book says 1.6 volts per
turn so I cranked in 4 or so turns, not being very accurate, and did a
quick engine run.  Wow, I went way too far. After the engine warmed up I
took it to about 2000 rpm and I was getting 15+ volts and climbing.  Not
wanting to remove the cowl again today, I'll adjust it down on next
airport visit and run with top cowl off to tweak it in to 13.6 or 13.8
volts.  I came home a happy camper as I think I can now forget ordering
the 30 amp unit ($680) and can probably run with landing lights in the
pattern without showing a slight discharge.  I'll keep you posted.

KR> progress

2018-02-03 Thread Flesner via KRnet

An update on my (newly minted) KR. I had purchased a high time o-200 and was
hoping to get a couple hundred hours on it before doing a complete rebuild.
Well, that was not the way things went, In the first few flights, the hotter
the engine got, the lower the oil pressure got. 15 lbs. below Continental
minimums. Pulled the engine off the plane, took it home, and it was a good
thing I did. Main bearings were destroyed. So I sent case, crank, rods, cam and
lifters to the appropriate machine shops. I have them back and have assembled
the case. I am now waiting on 4 new Millennium cylinders. I expect them to be
here next week. Hopefully, I'll be flying in 2 weeks. I would love to fly into
Oshkosh with Mark and the Guys as it's always been a goal of mine. Fingers
crossed.

Thanks. I try to get a close up of it tomorrow. I could have
connected the cable on the opposite side of the throttle lever pivot
and not needed a change of direction of the cable but, like you said,
I didn't want a big loop forward of the firewall. I designed it in
my head, not on paper, so it took a few minor changes to get the arm
length / orientation correct but over all I just mounted it and it
works just fine. I'm always amazed what different people notice in the photos.

Good progress today. Cylinders bolted on and torqued, push rod tube
seals in place, induction tubes all installed, rocker arms installed
and checked for gap clearance. Only one measured right at the max
limit. That was my last major concern so it looks like assembly is
all that's left. Mag install and timing will happen later this week
so it could be running by the weekend. :-)

If I could put a Corvair engine on this thing (since I already have two
of them), I'd have done it early on. But Jim Faughn set this KR2 up
with the CG at the very forward end of the range for his 190 pounds.
When I get in it at 140 pounds, it's even more forward. It's so far
forward it has to be flown with up trim, but other than that, there are
no other noticeable effects, and it is a pretty fast plane. But there's
no way to put a Corvair or O-200 on it unless I also bolt at least
thirty pounds of weight in the tail. Coupled with the eighty extra
pounds of the Corvair over the VW, that's another 110 pounds of overall
weight. And then there's the new engine mount, cowling, complete
firewall redo, etc. When I bought N891JF I thought I'd just turn the
key and fly it, but I've spent more time working on it than I have
flying it. N56ML has way more time flying on it than maintenance time
required, probably a 20 to 1 ratio. I'm looking very forward to
refurbing N56ML and getting it back in the air, starting as soon as the
Swift is flying again...

eliminates the usual big loops of control cable that are required when a

Incorrect installatino of the rods on small Continentals is one of the most
common mistakes I find when I tear down these engines. I'd say 1/3 of the
small Continentals I have torn down have #1 and #3 rods installed incorrectly.
This is thanks to an ambiguous description for how to install the rods in the
manual. In short, they should be installed so the oil hole in the rod caps are
positioned to squirt oil onto the bottom of the opposing piston.

I received my rebuilt rods this past week and between the overhaul
manual and Mark Langford I was convinced I understood the correct
orientation and location on the crank. I installed the rods and
torqued them according to the manual. As nothing ever goes exactly
to plan they sent me 8 cotter pins and I screwed one of them
up. I'll order several more with some other minor items I need and
start to assemble the case next week so I can install the cylinders

I had a Sterba prop with varnish that had gotten stuck to my prop spacer
a while back and no amount of puling on the prop would loosen it up and
hitting it or trying to pry it off would have definitely damaged the
wood. I loosened the bolts 1/8" and started up the engine and prop
cleanly unstuck itself. Certainly not the recommended procedure, but it
worked.

I was unable to get my 5 inch prop extension off the crank with
several non destructive efforts and didn't want to do anything to
ruin either. After finding the right combination of socket size,
bolt length, and number of washers, I was able to pull the drive lugs
out the back of the prop flange and was then able to tap the
extension off with a rubber hammer. The crank is now at the machine
shop and for $30 USD they will mic the crank, check for any out of
round, magniflux the crank, and check for run out on the
flange. Once I get the report I'll know what my next steep will
be. If all is well I'd like to get the crank balanced and get all
other items clean and inspected and start planning the rebuild. If
any crank work needs to be done it will probably go to a certified
aircraft shop. Updates to follow...

I'm in the process of working with a company (google "chuck Ney

pistons, rods, and rings and re-bushed rocker arms, all ready to bolt

Larry,

Just a suggestion if you are going to balance the shaft
I would do the pistons & rods as well, a quick check to see how good they
are is to weigh all the pistons
they should be within a few grams, & weigh the rods they should be the
same, within a few grams

If the rods are different they may need end for end balancing,

Good luck

KR> Progress and website update.

2016-08-21 Thread Stef den Boer
Hi KR friends.

After the paint job we installed the engine mount and introduced our kr2 with
his new friend" the BMW engine" so last week we did a pre weight and balance to
check the engine mount.

I made the engine mount after a lot of calculation and assistance from some of
the krnet friends. The result of the W&B is great. Because we made the
leadingede fuel tanks there is almost no change in the gravity point.

It looks like we use only 8"/ 12" aft of the leading edge. So we don't have to
use a filler or tho cut something from the engine mount. The light engine is
pretty much fwd so the result is a long nose.

Final weight will be around 305 kgIt is more we hoped but it is accepteble I
think.

Now I am sure the engine mount is oke, we can start with the engine cowlings.

I did a update to my website to.

Everybody thanks for sharing information via the KR-net.

Hello everyone,Just a little update on N863RK. Yesterday I finish the
installation on my oil cooler, flying my kr2 the winter months the oil
temperature would stay below 200 ?But as the weather is getting warmer I
noticed the temperature would raise up above 220 degrees . So I figured the
only option was to install an oil cooler. Today I took it for about an hour
flight and at one point I had the Continental breathing hard for about 35
minutes and the temperature never ?got above 175 degrees so the installation
was a success. The only other information I have is, a cruise at about a
hundred and forty-five miles an hour that's about all she will do so if all you
Builders out there remember one very important thing, build it light. Don't
turn a 550 pound airplane into an 850 pounder.Please don't get me wrong,flying
a KR 140 145 miles an hour is not bad at all I've got a hundred hours on it now
with no problems. The icing on the cake will be flying N863RK to the 2016
Gathering see you all there.

that) but the result is very nice. Soon I will update my site so you can see
the results. I think the are a bit heavy but I am not sure, I need to balance
the ailerons so I need some help.
The KR guide book is at my parents place And they are on holyday so I ask you
guys.
If you ballance the aileron, do you need that much lead that the lowerside of
the aileron is waterlevel? If I look at Google is that the best way but I need
it to heare from you.

I'm assuming your KR is setting level when you balance the aileron,
especially if it's a tail dragger or you may see a slight trail edge
up as it seeks to go level. . Tri-gear sets pretty level in the
three point attitude.

Add the amount of lead needed so that, in the static position without
any linkage attached, when the trail edge of the aileron is moved
down and released, it returns so the trail edge of the aileron is
even with the trail edge of the wing. Insure you have no hinge
friction or binding. The object is to have equal weight forward and
aft of the hinge point.

Made engine runs on the 2180 VW with new cooling ducts. OAT 88 degrees F,
all CHT at 320 degrees F, all EGT at 980 degrees F, oil temp at 150 degrees
F - not really working hard. No leaks. Mixture set at 14.7 AFR
Putting the newly painted cowl on now; fitting up nicely with 3/16-inch
spinner clearance all around.
BFR scheduled tomorrow morning.
Good news - Piedmont has dropped the price on a VFR transponder check and
cert to $125. Was $187. Operating within 60 NM of Washington DC: got to
have it.

Chris,
I am using the Innovate Digital MTX obtained from Jegs Performance. I have
tried other AFR gauges, but these were not suitable for the aviation
application. Prices vary along with data logging and other bells and
whistles. If you burn 100 LL, expect to replace the O2 sensor every 100
hours or so due to lead clogging.
http://www.jegs.com/p/Innovate-Motorsports/Innovate-Motorsports-Digital-MTX-Wideband-Gauge/1558858/10002/-1
Whatever mixture meter you decide on, highly recommend you get it as a
system with O2 sensor, computer and display from one vendor, brand and
model. Don't forget the correct bung to weld into your exhaust pipe.
I put on a Mixture Meter forum at the Gathering each year and also at
AirVenture. Won't make the Gathering this year - Chino just to far for me -
but definitely will be at Oshkosh.

My Zenith on the 2180 VW does go rich to lean from idle to WOT. I have a
Mixture Meter that shows this in real-time and can dial in the mixture from
the cockpit as needed. The knob in the cockpit is connected to the needle
valve on the carb by a VW speedometer cable. As far as I can determine, the
Zenith I am using has only two jets: an idle jet with a screw adjustment and
a run jet with a screw adjustment. The run jet is the one that I am
adjusting from the cockpit mixture control knob. This set up works fine for
me. I figure: It ain't broke, so I don't need to fix it. In my company of
one, I am putting the design engineer on furlough and turning the flight
testing over to the test pilot and flight test engineer.

2014-05-30 Thread Roger Bulla via KRnet

Sid

Glad to see you getting close to your KR back in the air.

I had the same problem on my Zenith on my old KR. I solved it by drilling
out the main fixed jet in the bottom of the float bowl. I just used some
Acetylene torch cleaners to ream the jet out ever so slightly.
That made the mixture stay more constant throughout the full throttle range,
and it enriched the top end to acceptable levels. Of course I didn't have a
Mixture Meter to see instantaneous readings only an EGT, but it seemed to
work. There is a lot of black magic going on in an intake system.

Sid, does your engine go very rich at mid to low throttle settings?
Mine with the Zenith carb was good at idle and full throttle, but went
very rich to the point of fouling plugs at mid range. I didn't know
what was going on until I installed the mixture meter then I could
compensate for it. Spoke to an engineer at Zenith and he told me that
the part number for that carb was the generic one not tuned for a
particular engine and there was a jet in it that should be a little
bigger to even out the mixture across the whole throttle band.

I have sufficient hangar space that I should be able to fit 3 and possibly a
4th KR inside for the night and of course there is plenty of ramp space. You
guys are welcome to do an overnight here before we fly out to Chino. I show
570 nautical miles to Chino from here. We'll plan an airport barbecue or
something here for the evening. If I plan ahead a bit, I'll make sure my truck
tank is full so should have plenty of alcohol free "premium" Mogas on hand for
the fleet at an inexpensive price.

Afterwards, I'll do some taxi testing to test out the brakes and that sort

I would fly it tomorrow if the condition inspection was signed off...but
it's not. Although I'm surrounded by A&Ps at my airport, none of them do it

the weather's decent next weekend, I should be back in the air. It's even
possible that I may get it signed off tomorrow, and if so, I could be flying

And like Ray, getting that airplane out of my basement opens up a lot of

Now that we can put all of the name changing stuff behind us, we can start
talking about building again. For me, I have been distracted by car
projects (been working on a 66" Corvair coupe and an Ultravan) and a plane
project I foolishly bought. I had bought a Cessna 175 with the geared
engine and it was just filling up my hangar so there was no room to work on
anything - just push planes around.
But I did finally manage to sell it and they came and picked it up today.
So, now my hangar is really spacious. And I hope to get back to my KR2S.
My fuselage is done and sitting on wheels. my engine is done (4 Corvair
colleges) and test run. I have all the stuff to build the wings - spars,
ribs, fuel tanks and wing skins - but I went ahead and bought Dan Heath's
old wings because he's working on a panther now. That should be a big jump
start. Monday morning I am going to try and fit them. Maybe they'll work,
maybe not, but at least it is some forward movement. Then it's
electronics. Will let you guys know what happens.

Needless to say the cowling is not as pretty as Sids new one but it
is not bad considering the modifying it went through .
I am scheduled for some refresher tailwheel time as well.
Many thanks to Sid in getting his old cowling to me!

I consider the two flight control systems , pitch and roll, to be the
most critical items on the KR. Inspect them closely. I'm convinced
that a loss of either system in flight would be terminal, unlike the
failure in a "certified" aircraft where yaw can control roll and
pitch trim is required to control pitch. I'm convinced that
"controlled flight" to an off airport landing should be quite
survivable in a KR (ref. Langford's several dead stick landings).

Not sure is this is a subject of interest any of you as my aircraft

N186 RC is a standard KR 2 that has been flying since 1993.
It is in my garage with the wings of. I have cleaned up the stub wings
at the mounting area, have re-arced the tailspring and reinstalled it. I
also have plans to raise the canopy an inch and a half to 2 inches for more
head room and am currently in the process of retrofitting a different
cowling.
Possibly will convert it to a tri-gear but that being the operation at
it is remains to be seen.
I also plan to add a belly flap.
This also gives me the opportunity to thoroughly go over the airplane.
I would appreciate hearing from those of you that have older aircraft
and what type of maintenance issues especially regarding the fiberglass
that you may have run into. My airplane much to my satisfaction seems to
have been very well built and maintained. Thank you

Hello everyone, It seems to be a little slow on the net so I'll give a quick
update on my project. All of the plane now has primer on it except for the
cowl, which is not made yet. 99 percent of the sanding is behind me now and I
could not be happier ( Sanding sux ). I am looking forward to hanging the o-200
on this thing, making a cowling and going flying. I know there's more to it
than that but that's the big stuff.

Just came up from the basement after spending another full day filling and
sanding, I prefer the massive one cover with micro and sand down until I hit
the high spots. You end up with a lot of wasted micro being sanded back off but
it seems to make for a smoother finish. But then again, when I paint this thing
it's liable to look like a 6 yr old kid did the sanding. Heck, I'm in sales,
what do I know about bodywork ? A word of advise to those about to start a
project. It will be for the most part a solitary effort, I have great friends
but they seem to make themselves scarce when the serious , labor intensive work
starts. Other than that, Party on Dudes !

Finally got to cut wood again tonight. Its been 3 months!!! way too long.
Moving and starting a new job has up till now taken my free time. Hopefully I
can get things rolling again.

Tonight I built a simple jig to square up the fuselage sides. The next step is
to cut and glue the bottom crossmembers.

Hello KRnet,

I am now pleased to report that the new fuselage sides on my KR2S are complete.
Pics can be seen here, http://n394ja.com/?p=326

If you don't remember, I posted a few months back that all four of my fuse
longerons cracked when I bent the fuselage to shape. I worked through the
possibility of repairing them, but in the end decided to scrap all of my work
and rebuild.
This time around I soaked my longerons and bent them to shape. After the spruce
dried, I built the rest of the truss in its final shape. I will say that this
was a little more labor intensive than I wanted, but there will be no crackage!

This will be the last bit of progress for a while as I will be moving in a
week. I am going to be living in Savannah, GA.

Is there anybody up in that area?

Some days you go to the hangar or shop to work on your project and after
working all day, wonder, what did I get done today. I have had a lot of
those days lately, but starting on Saturday, everything started to fall into
place and the obstacles are just vanishing. As I wrote the other day, my
engine is now running, the coils are good, the Crane unit is good and the
cowling is almost fitted. It actually surprised me how well it fit after
trimming. It is made for a KR2S, and my plane is a KR2, so I expected that
there would be much more difficulty getting it to fit.

The Ellison EFS-3A was sent 2nd day air to Ben and it was supposed to arrive
there tomorrow. Today I got a call from Ben Ellison, telling me that some
polishing compound had gotten into the first 4 holes in the needle. They
have corrected that and are shipping it back tomorrow.

I don't know how to deal with all this "Progress Prosperity", but I am
loving it. Oh, and one of my RV friends is going to paint my baffles for me
when he paints his this week. How good can it get?

Yes, I have a WW KR2S cowling and almost have it fitted for my KR. The top
is installed and am now installing the pins along the seam. I will have a
little glass work to do, but that should not be too bad, but. I might
have to sing the sanding song again.

I don't know what the RPM is, because I did not want to run it very long and
cause it to over heat. I will check that out as soon as I can get the
cowling on it, secure enough to do a full RPM run-up.

Mark Jones flew his for a while with the EFS-2 and said that he got around
28 or 29... I think.

So it runs fine? What kind of RPM will it turn with that EFS-2

Yes, I did tell Mark that I was "POSITIVE" of the polarity of the coils.
Thus why I did not trust myself to build an engine.

I have gone back and tested the coil joiner with the Ohm meter and checking
polarity both ways on both terminals, I show an open circuit. Is that an
indication that it is bad, or does it require a certain voltage before the
circuit will be complete?

I am currently running on the points only because I am sure the Crane unit
has been blown. Can this unit be replaced, or does it have to be sent back
to William for repair? If it has to be sent back, I hope William will be
willing to fix it at CC in Barnwell.

So, maybe it was not the polarity on the coil, but the Capacitor. Anyway,
it is running and I now have a renewed energy to getting this finished in
time for Barnwell.

Thanks to Mark for the divine intervention, I really appreciate it.

Today, I took off the EFS-3A and shipped it back to Ellison. I put on one
of my old EFS-2 and the engine runs as you would expect it to run. I don't
have a cowling of any kind, so am limited to very short runs for testing
purposes only. The Ellison will be back in time for Barnwell.

Dan, you're giving me too much credit regarding "putting a lot of time into
it"...I was only there for two hours. I had to leave early due to a line of
thunderstorms that was about to force me to spend the night at your house.
In those two hours, I properly set the timing (statically), and quickly
declared the electronic ignition dead. I then ascertained that the spark
was intermittent, and suspected the condensor because it was obviously
arcing internally while testing (I could hear it from three feet away). I
bypassed the coil joiner just in case (your phone message said it was bad,
but I'm not sure that it is...doesn't jive with testing, and is comprised of
two big diodes that are "polarity sensitive").

Given that we didn't have time to get a new condensor, and I didn't bring
one with me (I meant to), I had to leave before the condensor was swapped
out. But since you swapped out the condensor AND the reversed polarity on
the coil (which you assured me was correct) at the same time, I didn't
pursue it, knowing that reversing polarity on the coil may slightly affect
the high RPM performance and the overall life of the plugs, but will work
fine under all but extreme use.

If the coils were wired in reverse, that explains the fried electronic Crane
module. One nanosecond of reversed connection will fry it. For those who
are wondering, the red stripe goes to the positive side of the coil, the
yellow striped one goes to the negative.

What I'm trying to say is that your "divine intervention" may have flown in
with "N56ML" on the tail!

KR> KR Progress

2011-09-30 Thread Dan Heath
Some of you know that I took my KR2 out of service over 18 months ago, to
put fuel in the wings and install the Corvair. The fuel in the wings was
finished several months ago, but I could not get the installation of the
Corvair finished in time for this year's Gathering. I have been having
trouble getting the engine to start now that the installation is done, and
it has nothing to do with the engine, but, it has everything to do with the
idiot who was doing the installation, me.

Both Matt Elder and Mark Langford spent a lot of their time trying to solve
the mystery and earlier this week, I got an email from WW offering to come
up and help me find the problem. However, today, I must have gotten some
divine intervention. I could not stop the thought in my head that I should
check the polarity on the coils, even though I knew which side was which. I
installed the coils between the shelves, that made it so you could not see
the marking on the coil, but I knew which side was + and which was -, but I
just had to check even though I tried all known methods of distraction to
keep from going through the required contortions to loosen the bolts to
remove them.

So upon discovery that the idiot had struck again, I re-oriented the coils
so I can see the markings and made my own markings on the coils and the
shelf under which they are installed. I re-connected everything and it
fired off on the first blade. It continues to run great as long as I hold
in the primer button, but won't run on the carb. Sending the carb back to
Ellison on Monday, overnight, to see what dumb thing I inadvertently did to
it. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Ben Ellison today and he is
just as stumped as me.

This is not a show stopper and I still plan to be at Corvair college in
November.

Are the longerons already glued to the skins? If so, why not just reinforce
the sections in question with 2 or 3 layers of 6 oz fiberglass, wrapping the
glass fibers over the section at a 45 degree angle and onto the skin about an
inch. Cover the longeron in this manner about 6? on each side of the damage.
If you have it, it would help to underlay the glass with some carbon fiber.

Very nice modeling work Gunnar!

Yup, it makes sense that the cracks occurred at the location of greatest
curvature. In fact, the cracks formed directly under the jig blocks that I used
to bend the sides. A recommendation for the future would be to use more jig
blocks so that all of the force isn't concentrated into a small point. I would
also follow your suggestion to smooth the curvature.

Now the plan is to go ahead and fix the top longerons, because they are
accessible. For the bottom longerons, looks like the best option would be to
cut out a section of the bottom skin. The longerons would then be accessible
for a repair. I'll splice in some new 5/8" material and then replace the
plywood skin that was removed. It all sounds good in theory, but the real
question is to see if it's "doable!"

I'll be moving houses in about a week. So It will probably be 3 weeks before I
can try any repairs.

Thanks for the reply's

Sorry, but I don't have a good solution for replacing the longerons, but I can
show you why you have the cracks in the place you have them. If you look at the
two bottom images on this side http://go-design.no/images2.html, you can see
that the curvature on the original drawings is high in exact that area. I have
tried to smooth that out on my redesigned KR. One builder in Norway have used

KR> Progress Report & Another Cracked Longeron Story

2011-07-19 Thread Pete Klapp

Netters
When I was building the boat for my KR-2S, I first fabricated the side truss
sections as detailed in the plans, although mine are longer since I used all
14' of the longeron material rather than cutting them to 12'-2" per plan. When
it came to installing the mahogany ply, I first set up a series of temporary
vertical 1/2" bulkheads centered along a centerline on the work table. They
were the width that the fuselage would be at that specific point. They were
positioned to meet the trusses at station points along the trusses. I then
prepared the skins, scarfing the joints as needed, marked the truss outline on
the ply skins, applied the epoxy and stapled them in place as detailed in the
instructions. I then clamped the truss / ply skin assemblies to the temporary
bulkheads while the epoxy was still wet and allowed to cure. They were easily
pulled into position using Pony pipe clamps along the curve edge of the truss
and blocks and wedges along the straight edge (top of the truss) which is down
against the flat surface of the work table. When done, they had the curve
already in them. By doing it this way, you don't have the stress of the 5/8"
longeron fighting the skin when you try to shape the fuselage. I must also
point out that I built my fuselage with vertical sides, but I'm pretty sure you
could use this method when building the "banana" style fuselage as well.
