[lace] Lacemakers in Qatar

2019-06-11 Thread Tregellas Family
Afternoon,

I have a student moving to Qatar for a few years and she's just started
bobbin lace.  I'm wondering if anyone knows of any lace groups/teachers
in Qatar that I could put her in contact with please?

Cheers,
Shirley T.  -  Adelaide, South Australia where its actually a lovely
spring day today but rain forecast for the rest of the week.  We're not
complaining, we need all we can get after almost six months of dry weather.

Happy memories indeed Liz.  I've never been to a Convention overseas but

2018-09-18 Thread Tregellas Family
Hi Nancy,

Well, taking photographs might deplete one's memory bank but I have to
say that family photos taken, before digital cameras were even thought
of, helped my Mum with her memory as she entered the dementia world.
She would sit for a few hours talking and remembering her life with a
shoebox full of family and holiday photos in her lap.  A cherished
memory of my Mum who passed away in 2006, as I learned lots about my
family that I didn't know!

Re: [lace] What is best way to inventory lace books?

2018-04-24 Thread Tregellas Family
Hi Jeri,

I only catalogue my craft books so I have a very easy system that I use
- more time to make lace. :-)

It's called 'Book Catalogue' - an app, the Android version on my phone
and tablet. It allows one to have various 'bookshelves' and sorting by
any category - Torchon, Beds, Honiton, Sewing, Hardanger, etc., and
the best part is is that you can scan the book with the camera on your
device or search the net by typing in the ISBN number. You then get a
photo of the book, author, genre, date published, etc. It is easy to
carry around and one doesn't need a spreadsheet to read it. I do have
it backed up to my portable hard drive at home and use that to refer to
my shelves when trying to find a book. I'd be totally lost without it.

Fiction and other books are ordered in categories, then author, on the
family bookshelves. My DH has his own system for his electronic/radio
library.

Cheers,
Shirley T. - Autumn has at last arrived with a few mm of the wet stuff
but it stayed dry this morning for the Dawn Services (in Adelaide)
around Australia of our ANZAC commemorative events.

Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversary

2018-04-13 Thread Tregellas Family
I whole heartedly agree with everything Alice has said about Arachne,
especially Liz and Avital. I have made many friends around the globe
through this list as my husband makes aluminium bobbins though not on
such a large scale as he did before.

I was introduced to Arachne (after our son, who was in University at the
time and knew all about the internet and hence managed to tell his two
old folk what it was all about) by a friend who joined in the first
year, 1995. Lorraine contacted me and said that there was a lady in
Finland who wanted to know how to care for our aluminium bobbins. Well
that was a shock to both my DH and myself as we had no idea our bobbins
had travelled so far. Apparently the lady won them in a raffle.

So, keep up the good work of the longest list on e-mail on the internet
with regard to lacemaking in particular. I read most days but don't
always comment. I particularly enjoy Jeri's research articles which are
full of good sense especially in the archival parts.

I wonder if Tamara is still a member? And it was nice to see David C
mention Stormy Lee a while ago.

May we last for a long time yet.
Happy Lacemaking,
Shirley T. - in Adelaide, South Australia where we've had the first
heavy rain shower since before Christmas and the ground is just so glad

2017-12-11 Thread Tregellas Family
Thank you Jeri for your very informative message below. Not being an
embroiderer, both my Mum and sister were excellent in that area, so I
had no need while growing up, I had no idea that a needle had a right
and wrong side for threading. That is one activity which always brings
out the frustration side of me. :-) Now I will check the eye of the
needles with a strong lens to make sure I'm doing this correctly,
thereby getting rid of my frustration. Any hints would be gratefully
received.

I do hope you stay on Arachne as your missives are so very important to

Re: [lace] Lace samples

2017-09-13 Thread Tregellas Family
Hi,

We frequently are gifted by the estates of deceased Guild members where
we find small samples of lace in various techniques.

We have decided to incorporate these small pieces in the 'cut-out'
cards, three-fold I think they are called. The lace can either be
stitched or secured by other means, to the card, packed in cellophane
envelopes and sold at our Guild trading table. Monies raised are used
to further our Guild in whatever way the committee feels is necessary.

My personal sample pieces are used in this same way but given as cards
for special occasions. One group I belong to uses these cards as a
'get-well' card for members who have health problems. Therefore, every
scrap of lace has a use.

Cheers,
Shirley T.

a power drill, the torque caused a spiral fracture to my ring finger. To
avoid another trip to the emergency room, my husband suggested a Dremel
drill because it has variable speed control. Unfortunately none of the
Dremel attachments allowed me to connect my wire to the drill. That's when
I remembered my Spinster! This is a low-tech tool that many embroiderers
use to make twisted cording for a finished edge. Using a doubled length of
each wire, I attached the wire loop ends to the Spinster hook. My husband
twisted together the four free ends held them with a pair of flat blade
jewelry pliers while I reeled!
under tension. The resulting cable is quite lovely for my first effort
I will use this method again. The Spinster was easy to use/control
adequate for my 28/30 gauge wire but does require an extra pair of hands.
Hope this is helpful to others who are working with wire. If someone else

Hi,

About 20 years ago when I first attempted Point Ground my tutor at the

until they are needed again in the design.
You are right, it is also a good way to deal with stops and starts of the

Hi,

Okay, I'll come out of lurkdom to comment on this Jeri.

In Australia Mothers Day is always the second Sunday in May and Fathers
Day always the first Sunday in September. The northern hemisphere
summer is of course our winter and definitely not conducive to making
lace in the open, parks, etc.

We celebrate Catterns Day in November as do the rest of the lacemaking
world so we in South Australia, an probably the rest of our country, try
to have a lace get-together around this date. For us in South Australia
it is usually the third Tuesday of the month when we have our meeting
- we enjoy friendship, games and and early Christmas party. We don't
usually have a meeting in December but start back again with meetings
towards the end of January. Thankfully we have an air conditioned venue
so life bearable in the middle of our very hot summers.

Hi,

I have Heather Billington's book 'Floral Emblems of Australia in Point

excellent publication.

It consists of 65 wonderful pages, spiral bound and in colour of superb
patterns, prickings, working diagrams and coloured images of our
Australian State flowers. The instructions are so easy to follow with
basic techniques illustrated at the start of the book. Each pattern has
an overall photograph of the finished piece with a close-up for further

As to stacking them up - I have seen people use the base of a plastic dish -
like an ice cream tub, cut down to just about a one inch side, - on 3 sides,
and no side at all on the 4th, and the bobbins sit in the tray, and they can
be stacked one on another at the side of the working area. It seamed to
work OK.

Re: [lace] pillow question

2012-01-22 Thread Tregellas Family
Having made bobbin lace for the last 20 years I always return to my
sawdust pillow for 'good' pieces of lace. I know, they are very heavy
to cart about but I've never had to add any more sawdust to it in all
this time. After finishing a piece of lace I just turn it upside down
on a cover cloth on the floor and do a happy dance around the circle
(keeps me fit too :-)) and voila it's as good as new.

Cheers,
Shirley T. - Adelaide, South Australia, hiding in the air con with
temps in the high 30Cs, heat wave conditions.

What do you put over to protect the pillow but allowing it be ok to put
pins
in and out? The first one I did put a towel over the top under the cloth
cover and it hurt like crazy putting pins in, so that was no good (no idea
where that idea came from). I think that maybe felt underneath might
bring
tufts of colour back up into the lace.

Re: [lace] single bobbin unwinding

2012-01-08 Thread Tregellas Family
One of my beginner students had this same problem and we initially
thought that it was the bobbin itself. On retrolacing a piece I noticed
I had to take the thread off the bobbin and rewind. One of those 'Aha'
moments. After watching me put the slip knot on we worked out that she
had executed this holding slip knot the wrong way round. No more
frustration after that.

Cheers,
Shirley T. - enjoying a coolish day after some 40+C days at the
beginning of the year.

If it keeps getting longer, try putting an extra hitch around the neck? It
could be due to some subtle 'un-turning' movement that is happening while
you work with it. If it does seem more loosely wound on than the it should
be, take the thread off and re-wind.

Re: [lace] bobbin holders

2011-12-10 Thread Tregellas Family
When I first learned bobbin lace (20 years ago) I was taught to use
a working cloth underneath the bobbins for a particular element. When
that element was finished I just lifted a working cloth with both hands,
keeping the bobbins flat and the cloth taught, and lifted it to the side
of my work. Eventually there could be half a dozen cloths stacked with
bobbins quite neatly. When they were needed I just lifted the next
layer and started to work them again.

I have to admit to using the 'flats' now to move bobbins around but
again, extra working cloths make life so much easier.

Re: [lace] Monica Ferris books

2010-12-29 Thread Tregellas Family

Hi Jean,

We have a system at our monthly meetings of the Aust. Lace Guild in
South Australia which works brilliantly. We donate books to the trading
table (organised by our Librarian) and we pay 50cents per book (fiction
novels). After reading them they are given back to the trading table
and someone else buys them for 50cents. If we have more than one person
interested when the book first arrives, we sometimes write their name
inside the book in pencil then pass the book on to the next person on
the list. By the time we've finished with it if nobody else needs/wants
it the books are usually donated to the local thrift shops or old
people's homes. This way we recycle and also we earn money for our
Guild which is banked into our Tutor's Fund which pays for visiting tutors.

Hope this helps with your dilemma. I haven't read these books yet
so I'd best go looking at our local library as they haven't turned up on
our trading table. Please can someone let me know the name of the first
book?

I had the impression that ethafoam was like memory foam, and wondered about
the suitability for lace pillows, as it is rather soft adn squigy.

   Hi Agnes and everyone

In essence, ethafoam = polystyrene , also known as polyethylene-based
extruded foam, for our lace pillows. It has many uses; museums use it for
packing artifacts.

[lace] Strange magazine and member lists

2010-07-03 Thread Tregellas Family
Afternoon All,

As Secretary of the ALG - South Australian Branch I concur with
everything Ruth has said - who was it that said Life wasn't meant to
be easy?

Cheers,
Shirley T. - in cold Adelaide, South Australia - still fighting with
Win7 and its desire to keep changing the font size in Thunderbird as I
type! :-(

It is Australian Federal law which prevents the Australian Lace Guild or any

other organisation within Australia, from giving out contact details for

members.

Don't blame the Guild - blame the Australian government!

[lace] Sealed Storage of Laces

2010-06-22 Thread Tregellas Family

Hi,

It seems the Glad oven bags that we use in Australia have tiny holes
perforated in them and are made of the crinkly type of cellophane-like
substance. Our lace has been stored in these for 20 years as far as I
can ascertain with no problems at all.

Cheers,
Shirley T. - back to Autumn after a freezing two weeks! If that
was winter we're in real trouble water-wise. :-(

Dear lace storers,

I have some problems with the oven bags recommendation described by Shirley
in Australia, and since the topic is moving right along, let me suggest:

Hi,

I've had a reply from our past Curator about my query which Jeri
brought to my notice and am still awaiting a reply from our present
Curator but the reply I've already had is that the oven bags used in
previous years - without any damage I might add to any lace stored in
them over the last 20 years - were the crinkly type which I use
myself. When I receive a reply from our present Curator (who is leaving
for overseas shortly) I will let the list know.

Bye for now,
Shirley T. - just home from a radio club meeting where the hall was

It's all these little hints which make life so much easier. Thank
you Jeri for my new piece of knowledge today. A comment was made today
our Guild meeting. The curator was talking about storing lace and that
she'd had to buy more oven bags. Some girls had a giggle thinking that
she had said the wrong thing. The fact is that the oven bags we have
in Australia are made by the 'Glad' company and are acid free.

Cheers,

Thanks all!
Thank you Mark for your generosity with your pattern. It's not easy
to design patterns for beginners so I'm grateful to add this one to my

[lace] Re: [lace-chat] Snapshot of my life

If I remember correctly, it was called a Mimeograph machine. Not
pretty, but effective!

David
I remember the Gestetner - a horrible mess if you made a typing
error. One had to spread a wax-like substance out of a pot, just like
nail varnish, and wait till it dried before correcting the mistake. The
purple copy I remember as a Fordigraph. The copies were made by typing
on special carbon? paper then the sheet was attached to a drum and the
resulting copy was always a purple colour. The purple ink was horrible
stuff to remove from hands or clothes.
