Sometimes editing text in lyx editor windows becomes tedious.
For example accidentally my citations became emphasized when I inserted them in
emphasized text. Selecting them and unapply emphasize was cumbersome. It would
have been much easier to edit the source and remove the tags

It seems you are using an older lyx version. It should work with it, still I
suggest
upgrading lyx to version 2.x.
Set bibliography processor to bibtex. bibtex8 might work as well, I never tried
