Why doesn't lyx have a real time spellchecker?
I just saw the question being asked here: http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/blog/2010/02/04/lyx-easy-latex-without-spell-check/ Also: shouldn't lyx have a twitter account that I can ask such questions? Niko
Rename "algorithm" to "program listing" – How to get my program listings into my article?
Hi, I'm using LyX with the springer LNCS article class. In my previous work, all the program listings I had to write could reasonably well be called "algorithms," so I used the algorithm class in a float. This time, they aren't really algorithms, they're just program listings. So, I'd the surrounding float to be called "program listing," not "algorithm." What to do? Niko
Having trouble importing latex to lyx
Hi, I'm using the import function of lyx to import latex to lyx. With some latex file, this works fine, but one file can't be imported, reporting: "stammt von einer älteren Lyx-Version, aber das lyx2lyx-Skript konnte das Dokument nicht konvertieren." I tried Lyx 1.6.8 and Lyx 2.0 beta 3. Niko -- http://scg.unibe.ch/staff/Schwarz twitter.com/nes1983 Tel: +41 078 612 6354
Self-contained lyx documents
Hi guys, I managed to write an article in lyx in sig-alternate style. I had to copy the class into my tex installation, run texhash, install some layout into ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.0/layouts. And that's fine. And then my coworker wanted to see what I'd done, so I sent him the directory. And now he had to repeat all of my steps. Guys, I don't mind some hassle to use non-standard classes in my document. But it makes a huge difference to me if the hassle occurs for me only (that's fine), or for every coworker (that isn't!). Please, can't you encapsulate all of the hassle into lyx modules, and allow lyx modules that are in the same directory as the lyx file? Or better yet: inside the lyx file? Re: Self-contained lyx documents
Actually, latex is perfectly fine with the class being in the same directory as the .tex file. We routinely use this feature when collaborating. Using a class never requires running sudo texhash. And this is really crucial for me. My coworkers expect that we share a directory, and whatever's in there just compiles. No texhash, no configuring, nothing. That is the way we use regular latex documents. version control under osx, lyx 1.6.0 crashes
Hello! So, when I check in, lyx crashes (after checking in), on checkout, it crashes, too. I can send my file through PM; it is my unfinished thesis, so i'd like it to be somewhat confidential. Best regards, niko
some more environments
Hello! I'd like to define a few more math environments and I have no idea how. I don't want too many. I use all kinds of extensions to AMS, and it has really useful environments, but I want one more, and I want to be able to select it in lyx. Basically, it should be the same like the "lemma" environment. Only the name should be different. I want a data reduction environment. How can I create one? cheers, niko

Re: And where do I put my new module file?
Richard, I think there's a point to bundled documents, like Apple does it with their .pages things. But for me, it doesn't need to be so bundled. All the stuff in the same directory is quite enough for me. I have dropbox synchronize the directory and everything's fine. Only if I have to change things outside my document directory, like modifying several lyx and latex installations, things become tricky. Re: Does the version management work under windows?
I think this argument is a little categorical. There are many frameworks that would do the version management. But choosing one for the user and recommending it by making it the default is making life for users easier. And well, the binary I downloaded was platform dependent, it was a .exe file. But the net benefit would be that enabling version management would be as easy as clicking into the file menu as opposed to making your way through the already impressive documentation. Literature references end in a question mark some of the time.
Ok, one strange thing that has happened to me a little bit too often lately was that when quoting some literature, instead of a reference like [1] (using natbib), i only get a question mark, like [? ]. This is really strange and I don't know why it happens. Deleting the reference and recreating it sometimes helps. Other times, it is helpful to change the quote to quote 2 things at the same time, which then usually works. I feel more like a computer-mythologist. I thought that JabRef together with Lyx would make it nearly impossible to get the quotes wrong. What is happening? What information should I provide so you will know what is happening? Niko
Include .fig files using Miktex

fig script
Ok, this is interesting. I have 2 mac machines. Apparantly, their setup is not entirely identical. One of them prings the .fig images perfectly, the other one makes them pixely and turned 90 °. Turns out that the fig2pdftex.py script fails. Here's what I see on the command line: bash-3.2$ python /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/scripts/ fig2pdftex.py combinatorical\ explosion.fig explo.pdft File "combinatorical" does not exist Command 'fig2dev -Lpdftex -p1 combinatorical explosion.fig explo.pdf' fails. bash-3.2$ Ok, so I immediately guessed that renaming the file to combi.fig would fix the problem and it was true. Just funny that on my other Mac machine can handle spaces in file names while the other cannot. Both use Lyx 1.6.1. Niko

If I go 7 hours back in time, I get this error: Paragraph ended before \...@setref@link was complete. I know that this file used to compile because I have the pdf. Something outside of my document is causing this failure, I think, however the only 2 things I changed were the bibliography and the document. Removing the bibliography from the document does not fix the issue. Also, last time I closed lyx it complained that it could not remove some temporary directory. I'm going nuts. If I add the ERT \end{document} right as the first thing all at the top of the document, it still does not compile, with no error message. It doesn't even take time. Ok, I discovered something. Only the version I sent you is broken. Going one version back, QUITTING LYX and restarting lyx, then loading the older version – works fine. alright, i know what happened. I was adding page numbers to a citation, the page numbers were "pp.485–488", where the hyphen is some strange uni-code uber-thing that kills lyx it comes within 3 miles of lyx. once you do that, you need to delete it and restart lyx. I for one have had large troubles when asking people to cooperate with me, because I had to give them precise instructions how to set up lyx. The image relative path thing I could solve by making lyx find the pictures using relative paths and otherwise sharing the folder using dropbox, so i didn't need to tar/untar anything. What was REALLY difficult was the .module I had written for the document. It cannot be accessed by a relative path; it needs to be inserted directly into the lyx tree. On OSX, I have to redo the module installation procedure on every update. I would like to point to how pages treats its documents. Pages documents are identified with directories, which contain the required images, texts and properties. No zipping into one archive is done. OSX then makes the directory look like a file (called a package) in finder. I think, sharing lyx documents would would be simplified by providing self-contained bundles that can be shipped around. It works like this: you make a directory and in that directory you dump a special file that tells finder to display the directory as a package. But from the command line, it is still a directory. And in finder, you can look into the package by choosing "Show Package Contents" from the pop up menu. Now Pages files for example come as such "packages", you can copy that directory around, send it through email (yea, email clients handle it surprisingly well), and it still works. Now, other operating systems see a directory and not a package. People using something other than OSX would have to be reminded to copy the directory around the .lyx file around, which would be managed by lyx. The file would still be accessible, no performance penalty, but complete send-aroundability, and while it might feel a little alien on other OS's, on OSX it's the standard way to do such things, so OSX users will cheer. cheers, niko

the ccaption package says, i should do this: \makeatletter \...@removefromreset{table}{chapter} \renewcommand{\thetable}{\arabic{table}} \makeatother however, when i put it into the preamble, latex complains that Undefined control sequence. \...@removefromreset {table}{chapter} The control sequence at the end of the top line of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue, and I'll forget about whatever was undefined. niko On Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 3:49 PM, Niko Schwarz wrote: > Hello, > > using ams-book, the tables i use are numbered sequentielly PER CHAPTER. the > result is that i have three tables all called "Table 1". list of algorithms
when I have the list of algorithms created, \listof{algorithm}{List of Algorithms}, then latex says this: TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [input stack size=5000]. does anyone have an idea? thanks, niko
Re: tables numbered chapter-wise
aha! turns out that i am the biggest latex-guru of all times. \usepackage{remreset} \usepackage{ccaption} \...@removefromreset{table}{chapter} \renewcommand{\thetable}{\arabic{table}} this does the trick! niko On Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 5:04 PM, Niko Schwarz wrote: > i tried it with \usepackage{ccaption}. doesn't change the error message. > i think i need help. > > > On Sun, Apr 19, 2009 at 4:33 PM, Niko Schwarz > wrote: > >> the ccaption package says, i should do this: >> >> \makeatletter >> >> \...@removefromreset{table}{chapter} >> >> \renewcommand{\thetable}{\arabic{table}} >> >> \makeatother >> >> >> however, when i put it into the preamble, latex complains that >> Undefined control sequence. >> >> \...@removefromreset >> >> {table}{chapter} >> >> The control sequence at the end of the top line >> >> of your error message was never \def'ed. ams-book double-sided!
hi! how do i make my ams-book document double-sided? the page numbers should appear left and right alternating, and the chapters should only start on right-side pages. niko

ahh, it's in the menu! found it! On Tue, Apr 21, 2009 at 5:53 PM, Niko Schwarz wrote: > hi! > how do i make my ams-book document double-sided? the page numbers should > appear left and right alternating, and the chapters should only start on > right-side pages. > > niko >
Where do I put modules again so they won't be overwritten each time I update lyx?
Hi, Where do I put modules again so they won't be overwritten each time I update lyx? Cheers, Niko
e.g. and other dots that do not end sentences
Hello! How do you type things like e.g. in lyx? If you do not take special care, it is translated to latex merely as "e.g." and therefore creates a giant space after the abbreviation. How to avoid that? Cheers, Niko
Opening the same file twice
Hi, when I open the same file twice in lyx, it behaves very strangely. It crashes when I close the window which was second to be opened. I would recommend checking upon file opening if the file is open already and if so, bring it to the foreground. Cheers, Niko

Maybe I should clarify: I'm using 1.6.3 on OSX 10.5 On Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 6:12 PM, Niko Schwarz wrote: > Hi, > > when I open the same file twice in lyx, it behaves very strangely. LNCS page numbers
Hi, how can I turn ON the page numbers using the LLNCS (lecture notes on computer science or something) layout? thanks in advance, niko
Ninja mode
Hi y'all, what helped popularize git in my research group was undoubtably to ninja into git using git-svn, that is: people like I could switch from svn to git, and it wouldn't force others to change their workflows. I find it quite a pity that lyx has no ninja mode. That is: a mode of lyx that would allow me to change a versioned latex document from within lyx, which stores its meta information in a separate .lyxextra file, but exports itself constantly to the shared .tex file, such that the .tex file and lyx are always in sync. I know I could import and export manually all the time, and conceptually, that would (seriously!) be good enough for me. But it's too much pressing buttons to be productive. Does anyone do it that way? How do you ninja lyx into your research groups? Cheers, Niko -- twitter.com/nes1983
Re: Ninja mode
Well, yea. So what? It doesn't need to work all the time. If the Lyx compile button doesn't work anymore, but the make script still runs, that's good enough for me. By the way, the lyx importer is great. I imported several docuents which I consider quite complex, and sometimes after a few adaptations, often right away, they compile in lyx. Export is great, too. So what's the problem? :) Niko On Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 1:16 PM, Manveru wrote: > > > 2010/2/22 Jose Quesada >> >> +1, definitely the most important thing for me is good latex integration. >> That use case (cols use plain latex, you use lyx) is very common >> > But LyX was not designed to "reverse engineer" LaTeX documents, so lot of > sophisticated solutions are problematic for LyX import. > > -- > Manveru > jabber: manv...@manveru.pl > gg: 1624001 > http://www.manveru.pl > -- http://scg.unibe.ch/staff/Schwarz twitter.com/nes1983 Tel: +41 076 235 8683
