[MacGroup] Invitations

2020-02-10 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
We’re good to go. Our new home is macgr...@groups.io, but it is by invitation
only.

I have to enter your addresses into Groups.io to send you all invitations. I
know some of you have already expressed your interest, but for the sake of
orderliness, please send me an email directly to the following address.

i...@fletcherdata.com

I will only use it to try and sell you really expensive FileMaker solutions.
(Oops! Wrong list.)

::-)

No, I will NOT use your addresses for anything else.

Thanks!

Jonathan

P.S. Also, think about who else we want to be an administrator. All volunteers,
nominations, ritual human sacrifices considered.

Re: [MacGroup] New Mailing List

2020-02-10 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
All,

I’m warming to the idea of a hosted solution, rather than something in my
closet. While I am open to that, there are issues with spam filtering that
likes to block people from certain addresses. Running your own server gets to
be a headache of spam swatting and getting filterers to un-blacklist you.

I looked at groups.io and gaggle.com. They seem to make it easy. That way a
couple of us could have the keys to the kingdom and in the unfortunate event
one of us stepped in front of a speeding taco truck (inadvertently or not) the
other would still be able to support the group.

Groups.io is free, so let's try that. I’ll post a link as soon as it’s set up.

Jonathan

[MacGroup] Re.: New Mac Group list

2020-02-10 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
I also don’t do FaceBook; I LIKE the focused bandwidth of a listserv. I do NOT
like the massive time-sink that is characteristic of the popular social media
sites.

I asked Lee if he wanted to work with me to get it up and running elsewhere and
he told me that Bill Rising volunteered to take it over. I reached out to Bill
to offer support and he hasn’t gotten back to me.

I have plenty of bandwidth, and hardware to put it on.

Alternatively, I ran across a pretty cool listserv alternative called Gaggle
that might fit our needs. It’s only $5 a month for up to 50 members (free for
up to 20). I don’t know how many people we have, so I have no idea where we
would fall on that spectrum.

Do we have a consensus building in any particular direction or should someone
just declare it and the rest can decide whether they want to join or not?

What does everyone thinK?

Is Bill on here? Do you have a plan yet?

We should probably decide sooner rather than later.

For those of you who follow the financial performance of everyone’s favorite

1. Their stock price just closed above $300 a share for the first time

2. They are currently the #1 by market capitalization of any American company.
They are over $110 BILLION ahead of 2nd place Microsoft.

3. Stuart Varney of Fox Business reports that veteran AAPL watcher Gene Munster
thinks that the company will be worth $2 trillion within the next several

My wife runs a store a few blocks away from the burnt-out SimplyMac and she has
had several people come in and ask where it went. Until I read your comment,
Richard, I was under the impression that it would not be reopened.

Thanks for the heads up, Richard!

BTW, the old manager of MacAuthority, Jeff Jewell, owns TechRestore. Their
store is on Taylorsville Road in Hikes Point, in the strip mall behind Golden

I’ve heard it both ways. I have been told they’re weighing reopening, and I

address for my junk stuff. It is basically a rebranded hotmail service. But
they were free and I got to use one of my favorite noms de plume. Anything I
receive on that account is pretty much guaranteed to be spam.

One of the advantages of owning your own domain is that you can then create and
delete addresses for specific purposes. If an address gets too much spam,
simply shut it off, and turn on another one. I actively use three for various
things, and have had up to six in use at one time.

What I find hilarious is the mail I get on my dotMac account. I get really
serious stuff from companies around the world on the icloud.com and me.com

variants of my mac.com address. [Apple treats them all as one account.] One
car dealer in Maryland kept trying to get me to come in for the rustproofing I
had purchased with my new car. The one that I kinda wanted to take advantage of
was a BNB reservation in New Zealand. (And many others) I just send them a note
back and politely suggest they counsel their client about increasing their
communication success by using their own address.

I have a gmail account simply to take advantages of some google services, but I
never give it out to anyone.

I never give out my att.net

Re: [MacGroup] "5G"

2019-03-30 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Reading further, it appears that Qualcomm holds the lion's share of key patents
in the technology and makes the most chips supporting mobile technology. That's
why the current administration blocked the sale of it to Singapore-based
Broadcom, on quite legitimate fears that that would give China the upper hand
in the new technology, through their companies Huawei and ZTE.

It is likely that the path to 5G will be littered with the rapidly decomposing
bodies of early adopters and Apple is just waiting for a safer time to declare
their intentions.

I’m all for letting them wait for just the right amount of fermentation:

Re: [MacGroup] Phone dies at 50 percent

2019-03-27 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
I don’t think that has been announced. If you are going to replace the battery
again, I might recommend a few other options:

1. If you are doing it yourself, you can get higher capacity batteries cheaper
on Amazon than at BatteriesPlus.

2. If you are having someone else do it I would go the TechRestore in Hike’s
Point. They are very good with phone repairs.

You: "Jonathan, what movie is playing right now?”

Me: “The movie playing right now is “Solaris," a 2002 remake of a 1972 film,
which was itself an adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s 1961 novel of the same name.”

(You can’t be referring to 2013’s “Gravity," because in that case you would
have mentioned Sandra Bullock in the same breath as George Clooney.)

I second Eric’s points. One additional one: if you get the option to embed or
not embed the fonts. Always choose to embed them. Just in case.

This kind of file creation is very easy in InDesign. There may be other tools

Re: [MacGroup] Microsoft Tech Support Scams

2018-11-30 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Hilarious, Bill!

BTW, everyone, my daughter showed me an app that she uses called “RoboKiller”
that will block all sorts of robo-calls on her mobile.

An absolutely side-splitting feature is the ability to choose from a variety of
recordings that will keep the caller on the line and unable to con someone else
for several minutes. It has a bunch of pre-recorded scenarios designed to
string the callers along. She (my daughter) says that the number of robo-calls
that actually get to her attention have dropped to near zero.

She is a paramedic and uses her phone a lot in her work, so having to stop
working and answer a nuisance call is a real hazard.

She also says going back and listening to the ones that get recorded is quite
the latest in comedy entertainment.

Re: [MacGroup] What do you think?

2018-11-18 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
I’m with Harry. Not interested. Hasn’t anyone seen "Fate of the Furious?"

I was at cybersecurity conference a few months ago where the Cybersecurity
Advisor for our region from the Department of Homeland Security was talking
about the plethora of threats to a variety of technologies. He hadn’t mentioned
cars yet, so I raised my hand and asked if the growth of driverless cars was
keeping anyone up at night yet, and he said, “Oh, yeah!”

More and more TV programs include a plot point about someone hacking into a
victim's car to wreak havoc, either to kill them or to kill someone else. (I’m
not even talking about “I, Robot,” although that’s a good one.)

Name ONE segment of our society that uses any technology that hasn’t been
hacked yet. Very highly paid IT people in these companies can’t protect their
employers from devastation to their bottom line and their reputation.

And now we want to automate CARS!

I’m out.

Re: [MacGroup] creating a cd

2018-11-12 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Harry, most CD players played MUSIC CDs, NOT data CDs with a handful of music
files on them. It is a different format. Some CD players would play MP3 CDs,
but they were not the norm. I can’t imagine a CD player know at all what an
AIFF was.

Some CD players also would not even play music CDs that your burned yourself,
only manufactured CDs. If they would play them, they need to be CD-R and not
CD-RWs as well. Only computers could understand a CD-RW, AFAIK.

Use a CD-R and Lee’s approach: Let iTunes make it for you.

Literally MILES away. Once it was out in the country, and there was no excuse
because the streets and houses were old.

The other was within Louisville, It took me to Broadway when I should have been
out on Fegenbush. Granted the place that we were looking for USED to be on
Broadway, but it had been at least a year since they had moved out. That’s just
slow to change, but the other one had no excuse--It was pretty much in the next
town over from where I needed to be and nothing had changed, probably in
decades.

Maybe Apple's purchase of a mapping company might help it improve.

The SECOND time I ended up on the opposite side of town from where I needed to
be (while running late anyway) I took Apple Maps off my iPhone. Granted, Google

Re: [MacGroup] MacGroup Digest, Vol 112, Issue 10

2018-08-04 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
That’s a great question, Sandy!

I wish I had an answer equal to it.

Unfortunately, there really is nothing to fully replace them. My needs are not
as elaborate as they once were, since I am not a graphic arts professional any
more.

I use Pages to create what documents I need, but its page layout abilities
leave much to be desired.

I also like Pixelmater as a nice basic graphics app.

To be clear, these in no way are that great for professionals who need
full-featured apps, but they get me by as my CS 3 apps (that I inherited from
an ex-employer that went out of business) fail to work at all on anything past
El Capitan.

Sorry to get your hopes up.

I have been using PDF Expert lately and really like it. I was using PDFPen
before, but it was kind of clunky. PDF Expert has been rock solid for me. I
probably depends on what specific features you use, though.

Flash is a technology whose time has come and gone. Ain’t no reason for it
other than, um, momentum on the part of web developers.

I still use and like InDesign and Photoshop on occasion (albeit older versions
on an older computer), but they are gradually being replaced by other newer
(and cheaper) tools on my main computers.

You story intrigued the member of my family that spends 45++ hours a week

[MacGroup] The Wagon Still Rolls

2018-04-10 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
People who don’t own their infrastructure get screwed by those that do. You
won’t get much speed out of IgLou and Win.net and other local providers because
AT, whose wires they have to use won’t allow them their best stuff.

If you do not have AT Gigawhatsis or Google Fiber in your area then I would
recommend Spectrum for their decent speed.

If you have access to fiber it is relatively inexpensive to get an awesome
connection, the likes of which you have never had before.

Spectrum will still be a good second choice even then, but then in lieu of
fiber options in your neighborhood they are all I would go with.

Oh, and look up “grammar-nazi.” It’s one of those phrases that is more than the
sum of its parts, having a meaning all its own.

I’d also suggest look up "ad hominem,” but you sound like a guy that already
knows what that means.

Good day.

Ah, and therein lies the problem with being a grammar nazi, Peter. While,
initially, it may seem like fun and makes you feel good about yourself, what it
really does it paint a big red target on your back. (Speaking from experience,
of course.)

hoist
verb [ with obj. ]
raise (something) by means of ropes and pulleys: high overhead great cranes
hoisted girders.
• raise or haul up: she hoisted her backpack onto her shoulder.

Perhaps you were thinking of “foist?”

foist
verb [ with obj. ] (foist someone/something on)
impose an unwelcome or unnecessary person or thing on: don't let anyone foist
inferior goods on you.
• (foist someone/something into) introduce someone or something surreptitiously
or unwarrantably into: he attempted to foist a new delegate into the conference.

Feel free to shoot back.

So Phish-y I can smell it through the internet, Harry.

Here’s your clues:
Microsoft never calls anyone with such messages.
The message doesn’t give any clue that they know who you are or any information

This is just like any of the ploys they will use to take over your computer.
Have you ever gotten a call from someone claiming to be from “The Windows

Toss that Phish out; it’s rotten.

Evangelion, the Greek word at the root of Evangelism has most closely become
associated with spreading the Christian message, but in the original Greek, it
simply meant “good news.”

So evangelism is literally the promotion of “good news.”

Use the Photos app, Harry. Open Photos and any photos on a connected device
(iDevice, Camera, or thumb or other drive) will show up and be available for
import. Click the button at the top to import and they are now available
throughout the devices connected to your iCloud account.

Which brings up a good point: photos taken on my iPhone just show up on my iPad
and various Macs because they are all set up with the iCloud account. The only
photos I have to manually transfer are from my point-and-shoot and any photos
that people give me on a thumb drive.

Is that not an option for you, Harry?

The 2015s used the “MagSafe 2” version of the adapter and you will need to use
an adapter to use the earlier MagSafe power cable if that’s what you end up
with. I thought I had an extra one, but it’s the 60W for the 13" models and not

I love the heck out of 1Password. A couple of computers and three iOS devices.
Works great and you can keep all manner of secure stuff in it, not just
passwords. It works with Safari and can save your website logins easily. Also
works like a charm with fingerprint ID on iOS.

Re: [MacGroup] Good Screen, Bad Touch ID

2018-01-05 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Yeah, fixing iPhones is tricky. I have repaired a few, and I did replace one 5s
screen with a fingerprint scanner and got it to work ok, but I could never get
its proximity sensor to work again. Oh well.

I even replaced a whole case on a 5 one time. I thought it would be cool to
give one of my daughters a pink iPhone model that Apple never made in pink.
(It’s amazing what kind of oddball stuff you can find on eBay!) Never again.
That was a LOT of work taking everything out of the old case and putting it in
the new one. They never wanted it so I ended up selling it for about what all
the parts cost me.

But I did it. Pre-touch-sensor, though, so I didn’t have THAT to contend with
on that one.

I may not be the best iPhone repairman around, but I AM game! Been obsessively
taking stuff apart for half a century. I see no end to it. I have a sad story
about a Nikon F that is, even after 4 decades, still too painful to talk about.

And now there’s iFixit.com that just feeds my insanity.

PLEASE everyone, don’t make the bad life choices I have. Just take your stuff
to TechRestore!

(Wow, that escalated quickly!)

Touch ID requires the original button or it will never work again. The button

[MacGroup] iPhone 6s Battery woes

2017-12-24 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
You may have heard that there is significant gnashing of teeth (i.e, lawsuits)
over Apple’s decision to throttle back processor speed on iPhone 6’s that have
batteries nearing the end of their lives.

In their divine wisdom Apple just decided to do it without telling anyone.
Phones went from shutting off unexpectedly to lasting a bit longer, but with
the side-effect of running a lot slower.

After reading about it, I realized that I had recently begun to be frustrated
with my phone (iPhone 6s) on both counts: battery life and speed. Testing my
processor with a downloadable utility, I saw that the processor was indeed
running about half of what it should have been.

So I replaced the battery. This can be done at any iPhone repair place or the
intrepid/brave/stupid can attempt it themselves. Being the latter, I bought a
nice little kit off of Amazon for $25 and did the job myself in about 30
minutes.

It just so happens that my efforts were rewarded with what feels like a brand
new phone! The test utility now shows that the phone runs right at its expected
speed. And I don’t have to charge it three times to get it to last through the
day!

For anyone experiencing speed/longevity issues with an older phone, it’s
totally worth the effort.

This battery is inexpensive, has higher than normal capacity and comes in a
really nice metal box with all the tools you’ll need:

Re: [MacGroup] Putting in a good word

2017-12-02 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
John,

I agree with Bill that the 2012 is a good bang-for-the-buck. It has a pretty
speedy quad core processor, can take full advantage of the fastest SATA SSDs in
both drive bays (if you want to replace the optical drive), and was the first
Apple notebook to have USB 3, which will make inexpensive external drives and
thumbs a lot faster.

They are a lot heavier and bulkier than more recent models, though, so decide
accordingly.

If you can’t find what you need on Apple’s refurb site [1], check with
TechRestore, MacAuthority, eBay, and Craigslist, in that order.

Re: [MacGroup] Mac Mini hard drive replacement

2017-11-27 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Bill, I have not done any 2014s, but I have done a boatload of 2010-2012s.

Some basic tips:

. Make sure you have all the tools you will need. Order a kit from iFixit if
you don’t have it all.
. Give yourself plenty of room on a flat level surface that has something on it
to keep stuff from rolling. I used a (very) large mouse-pad-like surface. A
table cloth or newspaper also works.
. As you pull screws and stuff from the box lay them out in a line in the order
you removed them, so you can reverse the process easily,
. Watch the videos and look at iFixit’s high-res photos to be sure of what you
are doing.
. Make sure you know which way the connecters are to be removed. Some are
straight up and others pull sideways. Know which way before you start.
. Take deep breaths and relax. The 2014 may have slightly more screws and
steps, but otherwise it is pretty much exactly like the earlier unibody ones.

Yes, a coat hanger will work, but if you order your drive from MacSales, they
will include a kit, unless you tell them not to.

Re: [MacGroup] Why Is This Happening?

2017-11-02 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
John, my AT fiber costs me $80 a month, which is pretty close to what Google
Fiber is charging in neighborhoods a half mile from me ($70, I think).

The difference is that you will put it in your office. They may even have to
run a special line for you, since it is probably not rolled out all over that
area.

Mine is just one line in a whole part of town that they wired. And since this
is a residence, I get the consumer rate.

They treat businesses very different. I wonder if Google Fiber will
discriminate between consumers and businesses as well. I haven’t heard.

[Interesting: I saw them running Google Fiber in the neighborhood around where
my daughter goes to high school (Atherton). They were totally avoiding the
issue with the telephone poles by actually micro-trenching it right into the
asphalt of the street. I never heard of that before. A few weeks later they had
people on the street corners in that neighborhood passing out Google brochures.
Supposedly they are going to build out from the three neighborhoods they have
started in, so perhaps I’ll have dual gigabit connections sometime in the next
year. #FirstWorldProblems. ::-) ]

Re: [MacGroup] Speed test

2017-10-14 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Dan,

That’s AT’s new Giga-whatever (-Fiber, -Power,
-Whatevertheyarecalllingitthisweek) service.

I saw AT construction crews running stuff in my neighborhood and stopped to
talk to the guys about it and they admitted it was fiber. When I heard it was
available I was the second person in my neighborhood to be hooked up (I’d like
to meet the first!).

It's fiber from the pole to a box on the side of the house, and then a fiber
that runs under the house (crawlspace) and comes up in my closet to a box in my
network distribution panel. It’s ethernet from there to the Uverse modem which
connects to my router, then to a switch and back out the distribution panel.
“Gigabit" connections all the way from the central office to my computer. Yup!

Jonathan

P.S. They say that they can’t do anything about my download speeds, but that it
falls within their “guidelines.” But it’s more than twice as fast as my Insight
was, so I’ll take it. Having an upload that is more than 40 times Insight,
though, is just insane. It means that people can access FileMaker apps from my
server (during development and testing) at speeds only limited by their
download capability, which is usually plenty good enough.

Re: [MacGroup] Speed test

2017-10-13 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Aw, Dan, I’m sorry you have to put up with that…

Hmm, a little slow on the download tonight…

[Ok, yeah, I'm bragging. Just a little.]

My next door neighbor installs for Spectrum and he has no idea what’s next for
them. They have no infrastructure beyond coaxial. Their advantage is that
building out their infrastructure is a lot cheaper, so maybe they will become
the cheaper alternative to the fiber option(s).

I hear rumblings that Google fiber is going in the ground in my part of town
(if not my immediate neighborhood), so it’s started, and we will all (most of
us) have a wider (and more motivated) array of offerings in the not-too-distant
future.

Rejoice, my friends!

Totally, but be prepared for 30 minutes of steady, careful, intricate (and
nerve-wracking, if you’re not the Super[Fix-It]Man type) work.

Make sure you buy the kits that come with all the tools, if you don’t already
have them. The pentalobe screwdriver is not something you find in any old tool
box.

Also, I find the instructions on the iFixIt site the best because of the
high-resolution photos that you can blow up. Really helps. There are also
plenty of videos on YouTube that will walk you through the whole thing.

And the 5s is a very nice phone. I still have one I use for audio and video
recording when I need a separate device.

Are you trying to get back into your files, or are you trying to get back into
the business of graphic design? You can just use your old machine to open your
old files. If you want to USE them, then that’s a different story.

Forget about QuarkXpress. InDesign is the new king of the hill now. You can get
the whole Adobe Suite for a monthly fee now, so you always have the latest and
they will all run on the very latest hardware.

If you don’t want to come all the way up to current stuff, you can get anything
you want at Alice’s… er, I mean, on eBay, although they won’t be cheap if they
are very recent.

Is this just a nostalgia trip or are you actually trying to do productive work
with graphics?

Re: [MacGroup] MacGroup Digest, Vol 100, Issue 36

2017-08-17 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Pen, most likely it was AT They are really working hard to be the fiber
provider to Louisville ahead of Google. Google is supposed to be starting their
rollout in the west end, so if you live there it MIGHT be Google, but with all
the work I see AT doing around time, my bet is that it’s them.

They (AT) put fiber in my neighborhood and I love it. After several months of
relegating my TimeWarner to second fiddle on my dual-WAN router, I cancelled
that service. That’s $80 a month I can spend on other toys.

The AT is awesome! I get between 400 and 500 mbps download and consistently
900 mbps upload. Nobody can tell me why my upload it so much faster than my
download (or why my download is only half of what I am supposed to be getting),
but AT says that is within their parameters. Since I run a variety of servers
on my network, the fast upload means that someone can run a FileMaker app off
my server at the full capability of their own download speeds.

AT usually starts you off with a promotion, so in my case, my fiber actually
cost less that that pitiful excuse for internet they had me on before (that I
hardly used because TWC was the better service, then). That was a very easy
decision to make.

Re: [MacGroup] When Consumer Reports Speaks......

2017-08-11 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Laptops get more abuse because they get beat around more than a desktop, but
your Mini has the same quality of hardware that is in their laptops. Which is
to say pretty good, but not “mil spec.”

I have owned several Apple laptops ever since my Powerbook 150. Never had
problem 1 with my Powerbooks. My first (G3) MacBook was repaired by Apple for
free a few times and they finally gave me a brand new G4 one. Their experiment
in “cheap” laptop was not super.

My 2007 MacBook Pro had a mother board and a graphics card (because I used it
all day long to drive THREE external monitors, I think I exceeded its design
specs) replaced for free and it finally died due to a bad battery that pushed
up on the mother board. That was years after it was replaced by its successor,
though. But by then it was 7 years old. My current laptop is a long-in-the
tooth 6-yrs-old MBP and works great, and I have never had any problems with it.

I guess I have been luckier than you with laptops, Nora, but the user
satisfaction statistics for Apple kit tend more in my direction than yours
overall.

Sorry about your luck.

Yeah, that sounds sexy, but Lee’s response mirrored my first thoughts!

I just had lunch with a friend that works for a group that is a partnership

extinction risk.

And no, I can’t use this device, no matter how fancy it is, because my internet
connection is 9 times what this thing supposedly can do.

Maybe next year when they come out with Rev. B.

Re: [MacGroup] solar eclipse

2017-07-20 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Harry,

Looking through an OPTICAL viewfinder of a digital camera is dangerous. Looking
at a DIGITAL viewfinder is not. There is no way that an LED pixel can reproduce
a fraction of the brightness of the sun. You’re safe there, but be careful if
you are looking through OPTICS at the sun.

Modern Image sensors can handle way more light than the infamous TV camera they
burnt out on the moon when the astronauts pointed it accidentally at the sun.
(Anyone remember that? First TV pictures from the moon and they blow up their
camera!)

It’s best to just use an app on the iPhone, but on other digital cameras you
can turn down the ISO to a really low number to cut back the sensitivity of the
sensor. I would turn it as low as it can go. Even then it might behoove you to
add a neutral density filter in front of the lens just in case. Any camera
store would have one to fit your camera. Even taping a small one over the lens
of your iPhone might be a good idea as well.

Here’s a nice PDF on the subject on NASA’s site, that also mentions an add-one
telephoto lens, which is also a great idea.
https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/Photographing%20the%20Eclipse%20with%20your%20Smartphone.pdf

To get the best quality you don’t want to have to use the DIGITAL zoom on the
iPhone, or any camera for that matter. A telephoto add-on would greatly
increase the quality of the shots. For that matter, you should probably just
get a telephoto for your camera if one is available, because you’re likely to
use it more than an awkward and wobbly attachment to your phone. A 200mm (35mm
equivalent) would be about right. Ask at your local camera store.

Oh, and a tripod. Gotta have a tripod.

Re: [MacGroup] Time Machine (Time Capsule)

2017-07-05 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Ann (and John),

Disk Utility does not need the drives to be visible on the desktop to work with
them. They can even be worked with when unmounted, but they do need to be
connected. I would try disconnecting the drive and reconnecting it to see if it
will show up in Disk Utility. Everything should show up there all the time if
it can recognize it. There might be something wrong with the drive, or it may
just need to be reconnected. If that doesn’t work, restart the machine with the
drive connected.

There will be one or more files on the drive visible in Finder if it has
anything Time-Machine-y on it, is mounted correctly and is working normally.

I would reformat the drive and start over with your Time Machine regimen. If
the drive then gives you ANY more problems e-cycle it and get a new one. Life’s
too precious to waste it with misbehaving electronic devices.
