Re: MI MapInfo crashes when selecting
Hi, In this case, MI is not crashing. It is just that queries with a subquery based on objects are very time consuming. MI should be able to perform your query within a few hours. However, there is an alternative, which should be much faster: Select tab1.id from tab1,tab2 where tab1.obj within tab2.obj into selection Then revert the selection with: Select * from tab1 where id not in (Select id from selection) into selection -> this one can still takes minutes!! id should be a integer or text column which uniquely identifies the records. Hope this help Hi, I am running a simple select query for objects in two large datasets (few thousand records each). Unfortunately, MapInfo (v.5.0) crashes (not responding) after applying this query. I tested this for few records and the software is working fine. It seems that the problem concerns the size of the table?? I have lots of memory, fresh workspace and only these tables which are necessary. ( I have to run the query on objects not on records!) Any ideas what's wrong? Just in case, the query : select* from tab1 where not obj within any (select obj from tab2) into selection Thanks, Ewa --- Richard Metzger, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) Address : IATE-HYDRAM, DGR, EPFL, CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland E-mail : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Phone : +41 (21) 693 57 38 Fax : +41 (21) 693 37 39 --- -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hoy I've tried all the possible 'save windows as' formats (in MI 5.01) and came to the following conclusion 1: you will always lose a lot of dpi as bmp: not good enough, prints shades and rasters ok as png: ok, usable as tif: ok, usable as jpg: not good, the map is not shaped in the same way as the original as wmf: not good at all, the colors and shades change||| as psd: ok, usable all of them were read into MSword to print, except psd (into Image Composer to print) the difference between doing it from the layout window instead of the map window is that you lose the margin space ==> your map becomes smaller hopes this will help you Hilde Vandenhoeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] (attach possible) [EMAIL PROTECTED] (attach NOT possible) > > Has anyone had any problems saving maps to a windows metafile (*.wmf) = > format??, as when I produce one and view it either through MSword or = > Power Point there > appears to be areas missing colour - are there any tricks to this or am = > I doing it wrong?? > I produce the files by saving the map as "save window as" and then = > select the correct file type. Simon, I've had the same problem as you when using "save window as" from the layout to CorelDraw 7. I found that any polygons that had a patterned fill, as opposed to a solid colour, were reproduced as a uniform shade of grey. In the end the only solution I could find was to save the window as a bitmap (*.bmp) rather than a metafile. I'd be interested to know if anyone has found a better solution. Re: MI Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 save as wmf
I've had a little experience with creating WMF files in Mapinfo and importing them into Corel 8 on a Windows 98 machine, PII with 128MB RAM. I noticed two things with the WMF files: First, if I ran only MapInfo, more 'stuff' appeared in my WMF file. Maybe some joker at MI said 'lets give the process 10 seconds to finish whether it's ready to or not'. Secondly if your data set is complex, what appears to be one polygon will likely be comprised of many simpler smaller polygons to create the complex shape. You can't see this until you print it off, or view the data in wireframe mode. I've never had a problem with colours changing, except for the pattern fills which don't translate because they are extremely bizarre - has anyone noticed the extreme difference in printing time on 650/750 plotters when you turn on and off MI's pattern fills?!? Everyone seems to love Superprint, which lets you export lots of types of formats that MI doesn't ordinarily allow...ask someone else about it, I know it works but have yet to use it... As for saving bitmaps, I have a theoretical solution that may be able to increase the virtual resolution of the bitmaps people get out of MI. When I only had my little 8.5 x 11 printer on my Win98 computer and I tried to save my layout window, the biggest I could export it to was 11", no matter how many tiles I may have had. When I installed the 750 driver, it went up to 36"...supposedly you should be able to create 54" bitmaps if you get the driver for those printers - or maybe now that it appears that the output size may be linked to the maximum page width of the printer (at least in MO 5.0 in Win98) someone may be able to come up with a codebuster... RE: MI .wmf export problem
Have you tried simply embedding the map into coreldraw as an object? It allows you to even change your map once your in Coreldraw. For layouts, I print to a jpg file using superprint, and that produces an image that is better than the original. I've had the same problem as you when using "save window as" from the layout to CorelDraw 7. MI RE : .WMF export
There are many problems connected with WMF export. Some may come from the WMF format itself and how MI manages it; that is the area of colour and pattern reproduction. But not every trouble may be MI responsability because the same WMF may yield different results with different software (none are good, some are worse). And we are not bringing "printers" in the discussion! We had to run many tests to find some very simple colour/pattern scheme that would hold up in WMF, in Word, in print and in PDF. Simple? 3 plain colours. But there is another feature in the exportation of Layout windows: MI screws up the image and does not export it to scale; the exported image has the right overall size (specified in the window size export requester and including 'margins') but the effective "image" of the layout (within 'margins' area) is reduced in size by about 6% and its origin (upper left corner) in displaced in x and y by different values. Someone mentioned that exporting layouts will add "margins" compared to what happens with a mapper export; that is true, but those margins are unequally larger than those obtained by printing the layout directly, and this is the result of the MI bug. I made MI aware of it, they acknowledged it but I was not given any indication of when they will fix it. And this bug affects all the the window export formats, raster as well as WMF. And I have not find a way around either problem, colour/pattern and layout scale. MI: DOQ Display??
I have recently received some DOQ's that I want to use in MapInfo. They are doq.tif images with a doq.tfw world file. My question is how do I bring the file into MapInfo in a projection, instead of having to register it. I have a local contact that uses Arcview and Arc/Info and their Esri products read the doq files and display it in UTM, no registering required. I do not mean to start a compare of ESRI to MapInfo here. I simply am looking for a way to do the same in MapInfo. If I display the image, it seems to not be in UTM. I found the doq_view on mapinfo_l ftp site, however, it works on doq.jpeg images. I tried saving the doq.tif file as a doq.jpeg image and when MapInfo started to load it, it asked for the doq.jph file. Thinking it was looking for the doq.tfw - world file, I copied and renamed it to doq.jph, to which no success was found. Please help. MI - Scroll Mouse
I just received a scroll mouse from our IS department. It doesn't seem to work with MI. (I have 5.0) I changed the options to have the scroll bars show -otherwise the mouse doesn't work at all - and scrolling down zooms the mapper in and scrolling up zooms the mapper out (it could be the other way, I don't remember). Pushing in on the scroll wheel to get the directional cursor works, but that tool moves the mapper a whole screen at a time. Anyone else run into this? Thanks for any comments. MI MB: compilation error due to printer driver
This message could save several hours. MapBasic 5.5 compilation can fail and generate an error if it doesn't like your printer driver. I have successfully compiled some code with MB 5.5 which was OK with 4.5 to 5.0 ver of MB, but, this happened only after I switched my default printer from my HP LaserJet 4000 to my Lexmark 150c! The section in the code which threw the floating point exception system error was a reference to a layout zoom function. I'm advised that this error can be triggered at run time by a buggy printer driver. I wish to advise all that this can now occur at compilation time. The change of the default printer driver took a few seconds. Please check this before uninstalling and re-installing MapInfo, MapBasic, cleaning your registry, updating your printer drivers and then reinstalling your operating system and programs from backup. Re: MI Recieving Duplicate Emails from MapInfo-L List
I don't seem to be getting any duplicates at the source, and I didn't see any on MapInfo's MapInfo-L mirror site, but stranger things have happened in the 'net. To track this down, first check the message headers and see if the messages are really "duplicates" or just reposted by some confused server somewhere between Denver, Colorado and you. Also note that some people accidentally respost messages (like that one about the Brisbane Users Group). Also don't worry about the occasional duplicate... it's when every message is duplicated that there is a problem. However, if everything looks the same, AND the date/time and message Id are exactly duplicated, then the problem is most likely on your actual PC (and you are probably using Internet Explorer, which is easy to misconfigure). If it actually got duplicated by a server, then there will probably be a difference in the time, and then you read the headers to see where it came from and contact the postmaster there. IF you are still perplexed, contact me and I'll try to help you track down the problem. Another possibility is that you are actually signed up twice on the MapInfo-L under slightly different addresses. It has happened that people sign themselves up using the easy way (just putting 'subscribe MapInfo-L' in a message to the server), and then not knowing what to expect, do it again the slow way by sending another message to server for the same thing but including their email the second time. The server won't sign up the exact same address twice but even a trivial difference like say, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] (which in Internet mail terms is the same address), will count as two separate addresses to our mail server. If that's a possibility, and you can give me some likely candidates, I can check the list for you and let you know if that's what's happened. - Bill Thoen Ahmet Dabanli wrote: > > No you are not alone anymore, > Now the number of people is 2.. :) > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: 07 Temmuz 1999 Çarþamba 23:27 > Subject: MI Recieving Duplicate Emails from MapInfo-L List > > > > > > >I seem to be recieving alot of duplicate emails from the list. Re. Re: MI .wmf export problem
Tim & Robert, I use WMF's almost exclusively for map output, to go into either Word, Powerpoint or FolioViews. Fill patterns are, therefore, one of my perennial problems. The first few pattern options on the Region-Style : Fill-Pattern seem to work, but with the others, WMF'ed output will be greyed-out. However, on the basis that there's more than one way to skin a cat, you might like to try Specfill.mbx, (on: http://www.ctmap.com/mapinfo/files2.htm ), You could also try http://www.geobasemap.com which has a fill-pattern utility that looks cool (but might cost money!) I also came across Patterns.mbx recently (somewhere on Mapinfo-L). All of these will be more time-consuming than the standard fill-patterns, but the increased flexibility (fill density, line-angles, symbol-patterns etc.) might cheer you up as you waste your valuable time working-round Mapinfo / Microsoft's problems. Non-earth maps can be defined for one of 8 different units (in,ft,y,mi,mm,cm,m,km) but there are another 5 types of distance unit (survey ft, li,rd,ch and nmi). I am able to generate maps in these units, with a create map for ... coordsys nonearth units "rd" bounds ... and they seem to perform well. However, when I query the projection of such maps I receive a plain lon/lat (default when MI does not find the exact projection in its .prj file). MI editing street tables
I have a couple of questions for the list - I have a street data table with address ranges, etc. And I have a bunch of new subdivisions with new roads coming into the area, and nobody (not county agencies, commercial vendors, etc are keeping up with the new streets!). I have taken the subdivision plat maps into MI and have drawn the streets over them on cosmetic layer and saved as separate tables. Now I would like to add them to the street data table. So a couple of issues come up: 1) when I save and close out then reopen the maps, they are rotated! How can I avoid or correct this rotation? 2) How can I "insert" the new streets onto my mega street map, and get them in the correct place, i.e., georeference them? I have begun "playing" with this project for the summer and thought perhaps before I got too far into it, would seek advise from those in the know. Perhaps an additional question should also be: can I just edit, i.e., increase the address ranges for the new street segments in the mega table and then increase the length of the street segments? Thanks in advance. Re: MI Mapbasic Menu bars
Hello Listers, Is there any way to control the order of new menu bars when creating them in a MapBasic application. MI Creating an Imagemap from a map
Is anyone aware of a utility or utility assisted process (free or otherwise) to create an imagemap from a MapInfo map. Of course I can save the map as a gif and then use any number of imagemap creating utilities to do this by hand but I would much rather use the boundary information MapInfo has already taken the time to construct and the corresponding datasets. Thanks for any suggestions, Jim. -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: MI buffers equal, but not identical
This is a continuation of an old thread (same name). I'm maintaining a webapge for this issue at http://www.polarcom.com/~patawi/matt/work/MI-Buffer.html The original complaint was (is): I have two buffers with exactly the same characteristics (same table, pattern, colour, width, and layer) but they don't display or plot the same. One is transparent, the other isn't. This isn't the first map this has happened with. +++ Since the workspace opens fine on a different computer which is exactly the same except for the video card (Elsa Gloria XL) the vid driver was the cuplrit, for a time. However booting in Standard VGA also replicates the problem. Also, the buffer which should-be- transparent plots non-transparently. Images of this problem can be found on the web page mentioned above. As always, anybody who can shed light on the subject will have eternal gratitude and ML fame. :) -matt -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MI RE: Embedding into Corel Draw
I have been asked how the object embedding works, it is covered in the reference manual under the term drag map window, but basically it goes something like this: The tool on the button bar is called drag map window (next to the label tool). You first set your desktop up so that you have both mapinfo and coreldraw (or word for that matter) open in separate windows and you can see both programs at the same time. You need the map you wish to put in coreldraw active in Mapinfo and the document you want to put the map in visible in coreldraw. You click on the tool when you have a map window active, and the hand on the icon will grab the handle (very cute). You then hold the mouse down while you move the icon over the document in coreldraw. The icon will change to show a plus sign. Let the mouse button go and you will get the map into your coreldraw document. You can now close mapinfo, but if you double click on the map in coreldraw, you can get some menu options to change the map as well. It has the added advantage that it is also sensative to data changes. Evidently copy/ paste will also work according to the manual. -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MI Polygon reshaping
Milo - The mapbasic way: What I would do is to assign the new lat/long to float variables while you reshape the 1st polygon ( call the objectnodex()and objectnodey() functions ). Then use these values to automatically alter object on the 2nd poly to have the nodes placed in the exact locations of the nodes from the first poly. --OR-- Reshape manually in MapInfo only the first polygon and then have mapbasic reshape the second poly by reading the new node lat/longs ( call the objectnodex()and objectnodey() functions ) The MapInfo Interface Way: What i would do is simply to reshape the first poly manually, then just turn on snap and move the nodes of the second poly to be snapped to the corresponding node on poly1. If there are too many nodes for this to be feasible, I would use MapBasic because that's what its for. Hope this helps at all. >From: "Milo Simonic" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: "Mapinfo-l" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: MI Polygon reshaping >Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 19:42:05 +0200 > >A table consists of about 70 polygons (non-overlapping). Re: MI Need help with a MapBasic program
Re: MI Polygon reshaping
You can only reshape both at once if they were created using snap mode. To avoid a lot of extra work, after you have one polygon reshaped, take the neighbors nodes and drag them over the boundary, then erase the second polygon with the first. Re: MI Need to find an expert on wireless GPS
Hello Bill, Try getting some info from a company called Tendler Cellular in Boston. They have a product that takes a cellphone with GPS built into it and sends DTMF tones to the dispatcher station. I recently read an article in Wireless Week on them. Now if you could reverse it so the dispatcher station dials the cellphone and get a calling plan like BellSouth where the first incoming minute is free. Well then you would have a very economical tracking system. RE: MI Polygon reshaping
Milo: EXTENSION TO MANUAL METHODS: If you turn on the option that moves all common nodes in the same layer when you move one of them, it saves having to move things twice. It will also quickly highlight any locations where the nodes are not coincident and avoids the possibility of your snaps not matching due to twitching fingers. Use Options > Preferences > Map Window and set "Move duplicate nodes in.." to the "the same layer". Hope this helps.
