Re: [MBZ] W140 trunk lock stuck

2015-08-27 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

It's back to (ab)normal now.
(the auto-close isn't working, so it sits slightly ajar instead
of pulling itself tightly closed)

I pulled the cylinder out with the key, opened the trunk with the
dash switch, closed the trunk.

Now, when I open the trunk with the lock cylinder, the cylinder
stays recessed, and pops out when I close the trunk.

Praise the Lord for interior trunk releases.
They are far superior to opening a stuck trunk with a hole saw.

I swear it was all the way out before I pushed it in this morning, and every
other time
I hit it before today.

But now it sticks.
I can pull it out with the key without much effort, but it won't come all the
way out on its
own.
Maybe I'll just open it with the dash switch from now on.

Re: [MBZ] Old news...

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
While it’s a huge amount of reading, I highly recommend Robert Caro’s biography
(4-5 books) on Lyndon Johnson. If you only read one of them, read the latest
(4th) book, “The Passage of Power”.

I never really thought that much about LBJ, despite having a keen interest in
the politics of the 1960s, but this book goes well into him as an individual
and how he struggled with Kennedy’s legacy as well as the assumption of the
presidency. While there’s no doubt he was the epitome of the “good old Texas
boy” and certainly had some questionable political activities, as an individual
he was actually a pretty good guy who truly wanted the poor and underprivileged
to be successful.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding Floor Jack

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Grant.

Yes, it’s full of fluid. It leaks out of the main ram area, so I know that O
ring is shot.

Sears has a manual for it, but nothing on the inner workings of the cylinder or
valves.

There are any number of folks selling “rebuild kits” for these jacks out there,
but I wince at the thought of paying someone $50 for a couple of O rings. One
of the web sites I looked at today said that the Harbor Freight metric O ring
kit would have everything needed to reseal the cylinder and valves.

I’m going to swing by HF tonight and drop $8.00 for the O ring set. I’ll
probably tear into it this weekend.

The '87 TD is shifting properly again.Changed the trans oil and filter with the
correct Mann filter, (use anything else and you die). The filter coming out was

particulates..While under there taking off the trans pan, I noticed that the
front exhaust pipe mount was missing one rubber thingummybob, which was
replaced forthwith! As I was instructed, replaced the

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilding Floor Jack

2015-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have no doubt.

My biggest concern is if I can get the “quick raise” feature working again. I
suspect there are some check balls in the thing somewhere and they’re not in
the right place.

The O rings are the easy part. The O ring on the main ram is leaking, so I
know I’ll need to replace that for sure.

I seem to recall someone talking about rebuilding their old floor jack.

My Craftsman 3-1/2 ton floor jack is leaking and the quick raise
feature no longer works. I'm sure this is far from rocket science,
but I also don't want to be without a jack for two-three weeks,
either.

Any suggestions, experience, web sites, parts resource?

I talked to several local hydraulic places in Tampa today, and none
of them rebuilds jacks anymore. They said it's just not profitable.

You just have to be really careful about hooking
the lever that projects out of it onto the
internal injection pump linkage. Do it wrong
and the pump ends up at WOT. Not a pleasant
thing.

Once you insert the lever, pull back on the
whole assembly gently to determine that it's
hooked.

At least this is what I recall about replacing themŠ.

[MBZ] fuel shutoff solenoid

2015-08-27 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Finally had a look at my 115 300D to see why I have to open the hood and
push on the stop lever all of the time.
Appears that the vacuum shutoff doodad on the end of the injection pump
has died of old age.
Put the hand vacuum pump on it directly and it did not appear to work at
all.

Ordered a new one last night. Darned things are expensive.
Someone on here posted about using a cable like a lawn mower throttle
cable to pull down on the lever from the passenger compartment and I
thought about that briefly but decided that the car is too good to start
horsing around with stuff like that.
It has been good to me so far. In 10 years of ownership I have done
little apart from change the oil. My recent change of the brake master
cylinder is the only real expenditure on parts that I have had in a long
while so I cannot complain too much. The car is essentially 40 years old.

I hope that swapping the units is not too much of a pain. A bit of a
tight spot. May have to remove some heater hoses etc to get better
access to it. Want to change the coolant so that might be a good tiem to
do that too.

Subject: [MBZ] W140 trunk lock stuck

1997 S420

So, this morning I pushed in the plunger to open the trunk with the car
locked.

Nothing happened because the trunk was locked.

Then I hit the button on the key fob, the green light flashed, I hit the
plunger

again, possibly while
the lock mechanism was in motion. The trunk didn't open.

I locked and unlocked the trunk with the key.
Still won't open.

I locked and unlocked the car with the fob.
Trunk still won't open.

How do I reset the trunk latch so I can open the trunk?

Mitch.

Turn key to the left and pull up really hard on the trunk lid. Try it with the
key turned let and the key/cylinder pushed in, too.
